I want Izzy Hands to be forced into the found family and feel so bad about it. Everyone forgives him. He's done nothing to deserve it. He DOESN'T deserve it. But he's forgiven. He threatens them and instead of getting snippy they just go "classic Izzy Hands we love him he's like a Chihuahua" and they gently tease him like they do everyone else and they compliment him during raids and they try to get him involved in storytime and mealtime and he realizes that they like him?? somehow??? he's been a dick why do they like him? and he just has to. cope. and learn how to not be a dick.

Bonus points if he goes up to someone on the crew (Olu? Frenchie? Lucius? Maybe even Stede or Ed?) and asks "why the fuck are you all being so nice to me?" and the only response he gets is a "why not?"

Ok no but like this is so important

because like, what if Stede Theatre Gay Bonnet gets the idea into his head that there should be some form of entertainment for the guests at the inn. Ed knows how to tap out a tune on a keyed instrument, so he gets a piano in, and then has the even more genius idea of reciting some of his poems to the guests, but to be honest he hasn't read them over since he wrote them and tucked them under Ed's breakfast plate like cheeky love notes passed under desks in school (or so he'd read about in books) so by the time a trio of merchants find themselves sitting by the bar, ales in hand, ready for an evening of pleasant chamber music, Stede's forgotten just how, shall we say, gingery some of his poetry was:

My dearest love is fairer than the sea, and in whose chestnut eyes I oft get lost. To rest against his bosom, there I'd be, just after we had sucked, and fucked, and tossed.

To sup upon the firmness of his root, and in his treasured hole I'd sheathe my -

And the merchants take one star off their Trippe Advysore review because the co-inkeepers ran out of the bar just as the poetry reading was getting interesting.

If I was in charge of ofmd season 2 would be an anthology exploring all the different Izzy ships. Episode one has Frenchie finding out that Izzy is secretly as musical as he is (and then they fall in love). Episode two has Roach taking care of Izzy's foot (and then they fall in love). Episode three has Calico Jack returning from the dead to find Izzy (and then they fall in love). The season finale is a crossover where all the timelines merge together and Izzy winds up in more loving relationships than he can count, as he deserves.

Hi, other anon! First ranty anon here. Thanks for adding the bit about Rhys and Taika! In my head I included them in the cast and crew who helped shape their characters but actually didn't put that in the rant... 😅 And I gotta rant again, sorry! Please yell at me if I'm annoying. I just gotta rant at somebody.

But of course canyon op downplays their contributions! They're straight, they don't count! Only Con does since he's the only queer one in the "main three" cast! Besides who cares about how wonderfully adorable and romantic their little ad-libs made Ed and Stede! Nobody cares about Ed and Stede!

Never mind the (admittedly slim) possibility that either Taika or Rhys or both could be queer and just publicly identify as straight. I don't know or care if they are or aren't, that's their business. But downplaying their contributions to the show just because they identify as straight is not the best look. Same with trying to villify Jenkins for his original plan (which still doesn't matter because he scrapped it) just because he's cishet.

"Jenkins never meant for this show to be so kind to queers!" they say as if Jenkins had nothing to do with the casting of so many queer actors and the hiring of the astoundingly diverse writers' room. He asked for queer writers and actors to help him shape this! Why does canyon op try to paint it as queer actors subverting a straight showrunner to make something awesome when he asked them willingly to contribute? Is it not better that this cishet man went to members of the community to help him make his show a wonderful celebration of all types of queerness because he recognized his limitations? Do they not realize just how rare it is to have that? Do we not want more awesome queer media that treats the community with love and respect, no matter who makes it? Why try to paint one of the few truly good things we have like it's just barely dodged being yet another lame "queerbait" when it's anything but?

(sorry again but I just saw their additions and justifications and like...did you not read your own tags, canyon op? you are trying to turn people against Jenkins with your post and you are twisting his words to turn him into a villain and downplay his involvement and make the show entirely the result of the cast dodging around him and...I'll stop now. sorry! 😆)

I think the original poster blocked me, which I'm more than fine with, but I still do find it quite funny that I literally didn't realize they were going for a "David Jenkins bad!!" narrative.

It's hard to say who shapes what in a show like this; again, it seems pretty indicative that Jenkins is collaborating with others and not simply forcing through everything himself. The whole point of allyship is for those in positions of privilege and power to use that to hold the door open for others who aren't. (I know there are lots of people who take issue with Taika, for different reasons that are perfectly legitimate, but he has undoubtedly held the door open for others, and it seems that Jenkins has too.) So to criticize Jenkins for making a poor choice and then deciding he could make a better choice, and that turning into what we see on OFMD, seems not at all about allyship or queer rep, but about personal animosity.

Same goes for Taika and Rhys. Again, plenty of actors can and would categorically refuse to do the queer romance. Others would be entirely uncomfortable with it and try to brush it off. I know nothing about these men personally, but every interview has them talking about how proud they were and are about what they've been able to do. (It's also, TBH, unusual to see two straight male actors being so openly loving about each other, which I think is nice to see.)

What struck me and so many others about the first season is that...they actually did that. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and it didn't. They're gay. It's a romance. There are bisexuals and trans/nonbinary people and asexuals and polyamorous people. The cast is hugely diverse. One of the leads is a biracial indigenous man and the other is the whitest man on the planet and they're shown falling in love (look at media history sometime and let me know how common THAT is). The big villains are toxic masculinity and colonialism. Classists get burned alive. Racists get their hands stabbed.

It is very much not a perfect show, and there are things it could do better, but what it does is fucking remarkable. You will not find someone more leery of white male artists than me, and it is always possible to be disappointed by a direction a show takes, even when its first two seasons are so good. But we should embrace it when art is done right and this show, so far, is done right.

I sure as fuck will not let a teeny group of dingbats mad that it doesn't conform to the story in their heads ruin that.

Our Flag Means Death

So let's start like, in the beginning so you get context:

It's a romcom

That's very loosely based on a real life pirate

Named Stede Bonnet, an aristocrat who left his fancy life and family to become a pirate

He was different than the other pirates, wanting to be called The Gentleman Pirate and did things like pay his crew a salary

He also supposedly was the guy who invented walking the plank

That's just a little fun fact :)

His career only lasted barely over a year

But the most well known thing about him and his piracy is his stint with Blackbeard

Yeah that guy

Basically he got gravely injured, Blackbeard swooped in to save the day and he relented his crew to him while he recovered

They sailed together for a little bit until Blackbeard left him and marooned his crew

Stede tried to find him, but they sadly never met each other again

So 200 years later, this guy named David Jenkins who made one funny show that was canceled read the Wikipedia article his wife linked him and said "oh that was gay" and thus

The show was born!!!!

So you got Stede, played by Rhys Darby, the guy who was the background funny man in all your shit like Voltron and the new Jumanji movies

And Blackbeard is played by Taika Waititi, the guy who directed the new Thor movies and appears in all his movies in some way

AND OTHER REAL LIFE PIRATES APPEAR IN THE SHOW TOO, LIKE

Isreal Hands, who is called Izzy Hands, played by Con O'Neill

And Calico Jack, played by Will Arnett in one episode

So the plot of the show iiiiiis.....

Stede is sad

His childhood sucked, his dad sucked and he was put in an arranged marriage with a stranger

He finally decides to take the leap and commission a ship and planned to hire a crew and leave with his fam

But fam said "we are a wife and children Stede plus wife hates the ocean"

So he leaves them, and even though he's happier now, he still feel guilty for leaving in the middle of the night with just a letter about where he went

He tries to do piracy differently!

He encourages his crew to express their feelings in a healthy manner

And they even do arts and crafts at one point

Buuuuut he's a guy who has no idea what the fuck he's doing

And almost dies until Blackbeard swoops in to save the day

Who is actually Edward Teach the fucking adhd king

Who's pretty bored with his life of plundering and not even having to properly fight people anymore cause they just surrender when they see the flag

So he meets this fancy man who shows off his library and fireplace on a wooden vessel and a secret closet full of clothes

And is like "sign me the fuck up"

So yeah, that's the show's plot.

But if you might've saw in the very beginning, I said this is a romcom

It's a romcom

Between the leads

Thus: Gay Pirate Show

So but like, to give more context on how revolutionary this show is

It's not just between the leads:

There are two other queer romances in the show that get emotional depth and importance

And they said in interviews that all the crewmates are supposed to be queer!!!

So my fucking ship, my fucking babies, are interracial middle-aged guys who have a slow burn romance

And the other pairs are

1. two guys

(one initially portraying himself as a manly man pirate, the other a flamboyant guy who becomes a great therapist and friend to the main leads)

And 2. A fat black man and a Hispanic nonbinary assassin

No I'm not fucking kidding, they show this pirate who seems to have "plot twist! This dude is actually disguised as a lady!" But instead it's "plot twist! Their gender is knives!"

So the show is not just gay as an afterthought:

It's baked into the show's core

Yet it's not a source of angst and is shown to be liberating

They literally named one of the episodes This Is Happening to tell you This Is Happening Between The Leads

So yeah, this show is FUCKING AMAZING, especially after

So much queerbaiting

And all the romantic moments are made

To be romantic, not just in a "haha bros acting gay!!!"

Even the creator of the show admitted he didn't know what queerbaiting was when he made it

He just hired a diverse writing staff and made the show cause he wanted to make it and saw it as gay

So obviously this is fantastic, and definitely enough to get people to watch it if you wanna watch it at this point.

But it is very important for me to add this ain't the only thing great about this show.

So let me give some honorable mentions on how this show is the best thing ever and deserved all the Emmy awards screw the Emmys:

It's not just a comedy all the way through - There is some drama and hard-hitting moments that are given seriousness

They don't give a fuck about logic and historical accuracy, Izzy is supposed to be 17 at this point and time and he's played by a 50 year old man

They acknowledge racism and homophobia as a thing in this world

And the racists and homophobes get their comeuppance, usually by bodily injury or death

So. Much. Symbolism. With the clothes and the colors and specific items which makes me go insane cause it shows they took their time with this story

It wouldn't be surprising if it's hard to get into the show initially, but I find it's sort of a cool trick as you think the show is like "oh The Office but with pirates" before it hits you with the gay

Also the shows funny. It's a comedy, so you hope it would be funny, but it is really funny.

The show gives the cast a lot of room to improvise, so if you thought this one moment was really funny, it was probably improvised

A diverse cast in terms of skin colors and body types and accents

Also none of them are marvel studio body types

There's a sick black lady with a wooden hand in a couple of episodes and she's awesome

The leads played by Rhys and Taika are irl friends for over a decade, so the slow burn is believable despite being really fast

There's a funny moment where a guy named Izzy tries to be homophobic but it's just really awkward for him

The show plays with flashbacks brilliantly to show the inner minds of characters, so it's not some sort of afterthought

The women in the show, despite not being a lot of them, are given three-dimensions and shown to be friends

This includes Stede's wife, who gets a POV of her life and you feel sympathetic for her and root for her even

(which is also not afraid to show their lead man be an ass)

Seriously, the main ship has some of the best moments in the entire show

I won't spoil any of it, but when you see them, you will scream

And my personal favorite part...

The portrayal of trauma in the show

It's not a little thing - it's a major driving force for both Stede and Ed

In fact, it's basically the main plot of the show for Stede

And its very realistic how they show characters going through trauma

And its not all portrayed the same way either

This trauma is intrinsically tied to masculinity a lot of the time

And the entire show really is not only about breaking free from your role in society -

- but also about what being A Man is

Which works considering the judgement of gay love in society

... OK I think that's it for now

firm believer Stede doesn't have to win Ed's trust back. Stede shows up and someone gets stabbed and they go to the cabin and Stede explains everything and Ed explains everything and they cry and hug and kiss and Izzy loses his fucking mind because that easy? it was that easy?? he's made Ed angry and had to spend weeks making it up and Stede fucking Bonnet walks in with a beard and suddenly all is forgiven are you JOKING. but now Ed and Stede have to win the trust of the crew back bc Stede didn't just leave Ed he left ALL of them and Ed knows exactly what he did.

I feel like Stede would have an easier time bc he has the stories, he has group therapy, he's generally nice. with a lot of talking and crying and apologizing they'd forgive him. Ed has a uh. much harder time because "I'm fuckin Blackbeard" and apparently Blackbeard doesn't know how to apologize. the first half of the season is him figuring out how to be forgiven. the other half of the season is figuring out what the fuck we do with Izzy. David Jenkins hire me.

Day 11 of Stream Ink is Tea day! In the early 18th century, tea was about 3-4 times more expensive pound for pound than chocolate, so these two fellows are having a very special treat indeed, stirring in seven sugars and enjoying an accompanying marmalade toast, respectively. I’m imagining an aromatic jasmine tea, but that might be because that’s why I’ve been enjoying a lot of lately.
