Spy Kids (2001)
Tumblr media
For children and the adults who accompany them, there’s a lot to like in the Robert Rodriguez passion project Spy Kids. Visually, it’s so creative that in no time, it wins you over. There’s a lot of great humor too. Combined with good performances from both the seasoned and junior actors and a plot that holds its audience in high regard, you’ve got a family adventure destined to endure.
Unbeknownst to 12-year-old Carmen (Alexa Vega) and 9-year-old Juni (Daryl Sabara), their parents used to be rival spies who fell in love. When Gregorio (Antonio Banderas) and Ingrid (Carla Gugino) decide to get back into the field, they're captured by television host Fegan Floop (Alan Cumming) and his bizarre robots. Now it’s up to the “spy kids” to save the day.
The villain makes this picture. Fegan Floop is unlike any bad guy you’ve seen in a spy movie because he’s kind of… nice? Yes, he’s building an army of robotic children to infiltrate every powerful family in the world and any agent he catches on his island – which doubles as the set for his television series – is mutated into a freakish creature he'll feature on his show but he’s not really interested in world domination. He’s doing all of these evil things because he’s being pushed around by his employers and his second-in-command, Minion (Tony Shalhoub). You get the feeling he could be reasoned with. He’s certainly doing the TV show host thing well. It’s weird and loopy but that’s precisely what makes it appealing and the sets/his lair? They’re so cool the film has a post-credit scene that does nothing but walk you through a couple of the corridors so you can take in all of those colours and patterns.
Perhaps I misspoke. There is more to this story than the bad guy. The titular spy kids, for one. They’re terrific. You can tell Juni is fed up with her brother most of the time but that she loves and feels protective towards him. Timid Juni might be a wimp but just give him some time and you know he’ll prove himself. With the wild array of gadgets they’ve received, they certainly feel like the spies we need to fulfill this mission. The actors play off each other flawlessly and carry their own against all of the adults.
From the first scene, the movie tells you it's going to be special by hooking you with a sweet love story between the parents. There’s a lot of love in Spy Kids, both between the characters and between the movie and the people who put it together. The writing is smart and full of great, memorable jokes that’ll have everyone in the audience laughing. Sometimes they come in so quickly that you’ll miss a couple. It means you’ll be able to comfortably revisit the film with your kids as they grow up. If you saw the picture back in 2001, you’ll see that it’s aged well. Some of the special effects might not have (though we’re not talking Adventures of Sharkboy and Lava Girl kinda bad) but the film uses a lot of practical effects and those easily stand the test of time. The action scenes are great; so creative and so well thought-out. So many children’s films settle for dumbing down material adults have seen before. Not Spy Kids.
Robert Rodriguez's Spy Kids has a great message about the importance of family, the score by John Debney and Danny Elfman (among others) is memorable. The picture is sweet, fun and entertaining. It offers plenty in the visual department. You'll be excited regardless of how old you may be but for those under 12, in particular, it’s a sure winner. (April 17, 2020)

Came up with an update in my third Spengler kid: meet Eugene Melnitz Spengler (whose face cast is Daryl Sabara from Spy Kids fame).
In the IDW Comics, Egon had a college friend named Eugene Visitor who sacrificed himself to save New York from a fusion of ghosts, and I thought it would be nice if Egon homaged his deceased friend by naming his youngest son after him.
Daryl Sabara was born in 1992, so I put Eugene Melnitz Spengler to be born in the same year.
Janine, his siblings Noemi and Tobin and his GHOSTBUSTER UNCLES call Eugene 'Gene', while Egon calls him Eugene, because he doesn't see much sense in abreviating.

So the interests I gave to my Spengler kids are these: Noemi is the expert in Supernatural Folklore and History, Tobin is the enthusiast for Botanics, Mycology and Cooking, and Eugene is the Computers and Video Games geek with a strategic quicky tought

John Carter (2012)
In today's review, I find that Mars isn't big enough for the both of us. As I attempt a #positive review of 2012's John Carter #TaylorKitsch #LynnCollins #SamanthaMorton #WillemDafoe #ThomasHadenChurch #MarkStrong #CiaránHinds #DominicWest #JamesPurefoy
Before recent discoveries made the planet a lot more knowable, our next-door Martian neighbour always held mystery, fuelling fantasies and epics about our place in an ever-expanding universe. Whether plotting our downfall or caught up in their issues, writers from an era where walking on Mars wasn’t even fathomable were crafting creatures and stories tomes of fiction. In 2012, Disney aimed big…
