#Danny and Ellie: Gross.

Test Tube Babies, Spleens, and Fruitloop Father?! NOPE. No thanks.
Danny and Ellie take a small, reincarnation, vacation from their duties in the Infinite Realms (King Danny and his most trusted Knight/Princess Ellie). Don't worry, they leave the Realms in good hands (Jazz, Pandora, Frostbite, CW, etc, basically Danny's main council takes over for a few years)
They both weren't expecting to wake up in an assassin cult though.... Nor to find out they're five year old twins now... Twin, somewhat clones of the leader and this guy Red Robin their 'father' is kinda obsessed with....
Great their 'father' is an insane assassin leader fruitloop and their 'dad' is named after a fast food joint... whose barely out of his teens btw.
Danny al Ghul Danyal, cast a glance as his full blooded and twin sister this time around Helen Ellie al Ghul who rolled her eyes as they listened to their 'father' ramble on and on about their 'dad' and how they were created to be his heir (Danny mostly, though he had plans on Ellie going to be trained to be his body guard by someone named Lady Shiva soon)
Yeah, no. Ellie dealt with one evil fruitloop father who cloned her once before, she's not dealing that again or falling for the 'I created thus I love you but not really' bs. They need to leave, like yesterday.
Hopefully their 'dad' is... okay he doesn't need to be okay with it at first but hopefully comes around to it, okay with the two of them showing up on his doorstep soon.
And you know what, they're gonna bring him a gift.
His spleen. Yeah it'll be good to give that back to him.
Since you know that was how they got clones to begin with... Maybe don't leave your DNA with people that can make clones next time.

I am going to make a statement that may make some people mad.
There is a weird amount of Mpreg in the Danny Phantom fandom. Mostly surrounding Danny and Ellie. A lot of it is Ellie destablized and Danny has to care for her core inside her body. "But thats not the same!" Shush! Ever person i have ever seen do that, has instantly been like "essentially, Danny is pregnant."
I have seen so many other fics find a waaay better way for Ellie to de-age, or to have a reason for why she calls Danny her dad. Wether its magic, or she calls him dad as a joke, its just a lot better than Mpreg.
Its just an observation I have made.
Something i thought of after finishing the initial post: whats with this odd trend of calling Danny the Queen? Like this is a genuine question. Why??? Is this linked to the mpreg thing?????? Also, if you headcanon Danny as a trans man, but call him a Queen, don't you think thats maybe just a little transphobic? Kinda just disrespects his pronouns. The whole argument of titles having no gender in the ghost zone doesn't hold up cuz Danny is still part human and the gendered context of those titles still hold up for him. It would probably make him pretty uncomfortible.
Edit: IM NOT DONE! CUZ IT JUST CLICKED! A LOT OF THESE PROMPTS/FICS TAKE PLACE WHEN DANNY IS STILL A TEENAGER! You look at this teenage character and just "oh yeah, he should bare a child" LIKE WTF. NO, CUZ, I WAS TRYING TO BE CIVIL ABOUT IT, THEN THAT CLICKED IN MY HEAD AND ITS JUST UUUUUUGH! THATS GROSS! I WAS TRYING TO GIVE THE BENAFIT OF THE DOUBT BUT THATS GROSS MAN! THATS GROSS!

my vision for a girl sunny episode is a total actor swap. dennis is played by kaitlin. charlie is played by mary elizabeth ellis. this is where the idea came from in macs banging the waitress seeing her looking sooo insanely cute in charlies dumb dirty outfit. and when she gets to be an insane mess. and when dee says golden goddess. thats what i love. in this case playing dennis but Girl. all their names stay the same for maximum lesbianism. you get it
then thats where the parallels kinda die but hear me out. mac played by artemis. her in macs look. the worlds hottest lesbian youve ever seen. cant get it out my mind. and struggling for frank but whatever man listen. we can go bowling episode teams because i always want to see the snail. and i think its funny i dont need more of a reason
and the girls are now played by the swapped guy actors btw. dee is now glenn and he gets to do impressions. the waitress is now played by charlie which is so hilarious in my mind so disinterested and annoyed but in the casual nature of the waitress. and artemis is now rob which is also hilarious i want to see him get over the top and gross and weird wid it. and it kinda works with how many insane mouthsounds danny devito is making in the show gargling and spitting and slobbering. he has the range and dampness to play the snail

AND ANOTHER THING-
About Mafia 3
Some thoughts about characters and how some folks treat them:
John Donovan: Love this guy, wish I had more info about him that isn't all surface level and stuff I had to make up for a headcanon, but jeez I swear, at least on YouTube comments, it’s like people want to make him the Mafia games equivalent of Deadpool. Cause he’s “wacky” and “chaotic” and they want him to be the next games protag, once again, love this guy, but oh my god, NO! I think he works best as a side character and at most a secondary protag (like for Stones Unturned). If there was a game with him...what would it be? Just assassinate politicians in the 70′s simulator? Won’t be a Mafia game then would it unless he goes back to the Clay Family. That’s just YouTube comments I see though, but I got thoughts.
Vito Scaletta: I have to be clear, I DO LIKE Vito, but I think I liked him more in Mafia 3, very much Italian Uncle I deeply deserved in life vibes, I will admit though, even though I like him in M3, I feel like the devs leaned in on him being there as like, a selling point? While I enjoyed M2, I will admit as faves in order go, it’s Mafia 3, Mafia 1, and Mafia 2. Vito was getting dragged along for a lot of the events in M2 and boy, Joe was.... I wouldn't want him for a friend. Vito can be all messed up about what happened to Joe, but when I watched the cutscene movie for M2 I thought Joe was awful to Vito. Vito needs better friends :/ (also even tho I’m usually on team “RAIL THAT OLD MAN!” I think the Lincoln/Vito ship is odd, def not my thing and yet somehow not as offensive as the next character I’m about to bring up though.)
Giorgi Marcano: Oh boy where do I begin with him... I see...so many people sympathize with him or simp for him and it feels SO GROSS. (Imma be honest this mf is ugly he looks like a monkey with his busted hairstyle. Like if someone made a realistic Westernized Lupin the III but somehow removed all the charm from him). I feel like people seem to have forgotten he handed the Hollow over the the Dixie Mafia on a silver platter, that or they don’t care. The Hollow is the Black community in the game and the Dixie Mafia is all Southern Pride and Lynch mobs, all those Confederate flags... And I know that Giorgi KNEW THIS. I see people saying he was just doing what his dad said, and sure to an extent but it’s clear he enjoys what he does (He was so hyped to tell Sal what he did to Olivia), I will never forget what the Dixie boy’s did to Perla’s, to the young black women they forced to take drugs and exploited, the the specific targeting of the Black and Haitian communities in game, what they did to Casandra, etc. Giorgi was a spoiled violent Daddy’s boy that either was playing Lincoln, Ellis and Danny the whole time, or didn't care about them enough to even protest Sal’s orders against them. Even in his death scene, he never tried to apologize to Lincoln even if he knew the apology wouldn't have saved him. If they showed that, then sure I would at least admit he did care about Lincoln and all his friends that were killed, but no he didn't, just him and his old man. (PUTTING EEEEEVERRYYOOONE ON A LIST WHO SHIP LINCOLN/GIORGI! I CAME FROM THE FAR CRY FANDOM AND I’M SICK OF SEEING SO MUCH RACISM IN CHARACTER PORTRAYALS AND SHIPS! SICK AND TIRED!)
Game story and themes:
I will praise this game to the moon and back, despite it’s “flaws” like the glitches and game play. The glitches were not game breaking for me and I liked the game play honestly (I have ASD so that probably contributes to it). The driving is good despite me being a bad driver and I liked the how the weapons worked.
But I do have some thoughts about what I think was kinda lackluster and disappointing.
Lack of highlighting how horrible the Vietnam war was, condemning the army and the C.I.A. I know that’s so specific but you can’t have a Vietnam vet without having some kind of toll that it took on him, most of Lincoln’s trauma was mostly just centered around what happened to his family after he got back home, and some stuff in his childhood. Which is valid those things are traumatizing but idk, were the devs afraid? Also I know Donovan during the game is still technically in the C.I.A until he officially leaves in 1969, and he’s like, a big JFK stan, but like, does he know what Kennedy’s plans were for the C.I.A, is he blindly loyal? Was it game? I mean I know he does leave it but he’s been in the game for like 15 years, what’s going on? What’s all those war crimes for? Do the devs at Hangar 13 and 2K not wanna be put on some weird list? I don’t know, man.
My taste for found crime families keeps getting un-quenched: Looking back at the promo trailers showing Lincoln and all his under-bosses working together, with Donovan even tagging along, and seeing how the game actually played out... ow. The under-bosses hate each other, every convo between Lincoln and Cassandra feels like it leads to an argument, Burke was racist to Lincoln at the start, and....actually Vito seems like the most pleasant despite being a sad middle aged man so I’ve give him that. The most we get to them showing respect for each other is if you go to pick up kickback and talk more to them, then they’ll say nice things about each other.
Ex: Cassandra saying Vito isn't as bad as she thought, she thinks Burke is really fun. Vito thinking Burke is funny. And Burke having respect for what Vito's been through and weirdly enough, oddly respectful of her beliefs.
But that’s it, and they have no idea who Donovan is either even though he’s been working behind the scenes. And with how they are in game, I know they would NOT like him, I think Cassandra would hate him the most cause she gave Lincoln flak for willingly joining the army (I mean she’s right, I agree with her.).
So in that aspect I’m a little <:/ about. Not everything can be perfect.
OKAY THATS ALL FOR NOW!

Dannymay 30
5/30/23 "Dear diary" or whatever, I still can't believe Jazz is making me do this. But I rather write whatever than have her nag at me after the big reveal and me have to deal with all the "big emotions" she says I have to work out after the reveal of my ghostly side to my parents and the consequences due to the reveal. The positives are I'm not on the dissection table or getting studded without my permission. Dani, who now goes by Ellie, finally has a home to go to and is officially my little sister. But how that happens still grosses me out. So my dad found out there is such a thing as a polycule, and it turns out he is bi. Great news, right? All for supporting my dad, but why does he need to have such horrible taste in men? And why did Mom agree to it? That is beyond me. But yeah, Vlad is now Pops. I don't know if I liked it better when we were enemies. And to top it off, guess who is serving probation with us? As he isn't only me but part me and part Vlad. That realization was both relieving and disturbing. He goes by Dan now to not confuse the rest of the family as Dani, Danny, and Danny were tripping all of us up. But as he has yet to murder anyone in this timeline, Clockwork dropped him off as the weird family situation was starting to "stabilize," according to Jazz. She was excited to room with Ellie, but unlike her, I'm not happy about my new roommate situation. I am trying; we are both trying, but the whole thing is messed up. At least CW managed to lock him in a human form, so I have the upper hand with my ghost powers. Okay, that should be about enough for today. According to Jazz, I just need to end it with something positive, and then I don't need to look at this stupid diary for the rest of the day. Positive, what's positive? I guess; today, Dan came to "pick me up" after school while learning to drive from Jazz because he couldn't fly anymore and needed to get around somehow. So, Jazz sent him to fetch me, and as usual, I got held up by Dash. So, Dan thinks he is funny calling me little brother now, and yes, that's what he called me when he confronted Dash from behind. So, Dash turns to see who is confronting him and falls on his ass from surprise being faced with the massive bolder that is Dan. Got a good laugh out of that. And there you go, Jazz, your cheerful ending.

8 (sunbathing) and 30 (harsh whisper) for any mafia trilogy character plsssss!!!
8. Sunbathing [Joe & Vito]
“Got an extra light?”
“What, you already lose yours?”
“Joe, c’mon. I’m not that bad. Just uh, misplaced it is all.”
Fuck, man. Real good cover there Scaletta. Joe’s been friends with you for ages, he’ll know exactly what you mean. How fuckin’ dumb are you? Shit, you only had two shots of whatever shit he got for you— wasn’t even that strong. Got some dumbass-name too; sunbathing or some shit. Allegedly from Louisiana, if Joe’s to be trusted. You’re too fucked to care anyway. Why can’t you keep it together?
“Real likely story.”
“Well, it’s about as likely as you ‘losing’ that girl’s underwear last month.”
“Who, Sara? She ain’t missing that pair, I’ll tell you that much.” There he goes again, recounting some goddamn escapade with that fucking smile of his— you know the one, the one that reveals the slight dimple on the right side. The one that fuckin’ kills you every time he does it. He’ll keep going on about some girl unless you shut him up, but last time you shut him up you got a black eye and busted rib. Well, you gave him a matching black eye, so it’s all fair-and-straight. He had that goddamn grin then, too.
“God, you’re fuckin’ gross. Lighter, please?”
Joe hands the cheap shitty little thing over, and you just about want to steal it.
30. Harsh Whisper [Danny, Lincoln, Ellis, Giorgi]
“We’re gonna get caught, man, caught! You see the fuckin’ lights out there? Them’s for us!”
“Shit, man— keep it down!”
You’re taking half a drink from your dad’s beer— not like Da’ll be drinking it anytime soon anyway— while Lincoln’s trying to shut Ellis up. Hell only knows where Giorgi went. He’s got a mind of his own, that weird little asshole. Can’t say you don’t love him though. His old man’s fuckin’ crazy, but so is your Da an’ at least you got a buddy that understands. When he’s around and not sneakin’ off to do god-knows-what. Y’all are already lyin’ low, so he better not do any stupid shit. Or, well, jus’ not get caught.
“Danny, you think you can drive?”
“Hell yeah I can.” The words aren’t fully out ‘fore Lincoln tosses you the keys. Older truck, mid-40s production maybe. Standard key, but bit beat-up. “Is Ellis alright?”
“Yeah, jus’ needs to cool off is all.”
You shoot a look to the corner where Ellis is pacing and shrug. Yeah, that tracks for him.
“You need a swig?” You grab Da’s bottle.
“Don’t mind if I do.”
A harsh whisper comes from the corner. “Will you two please shut the fuck up?”

NSR Headcanons
Aka NSR themed shower thoughts
Bunkbed junction (Mayday + Zuke)
Mayday
- Has a secret stash of 1010 merch hidden in the sewer that she hides from Zuke (He already knows and doesn’t tell May to entertain her)
- Sometimes call Zuke, ‘Zukie’ after the DK west encounter(s)
- She is banned from babysitting Yinu (for obvious reasons)
- She sleeps on the top bunk
- She memorizes small things about people and will sometimes give gifts as a token for forgiveness after the events of the story
- She sometimes hangs on the pipes in the sewer instead of sitting on the couch (much to Zukes annoyance)
- She occasionally wears Zuke’s clothes
Zuke
- Occasionally leaves the sewer alone to walk around or reflect on things
- Has a collection of books ranging from scientific journals to biographies, not exactly a fan of fiction
- Used to own a pair of glasses before he switched to contacts, after which they’ve gone missing
- Tries to organize and clean the sewer, but it being a sewer he hasn't gotten much done
- Occasionally visits eve to catch up and make amends
- Zuke is May’s primary impulse control
- He’s near the top of the list to babysit Yinu, behind Sayu/Tila
Both:
- They have seen each other naked at some point with opposite reactions.
- They take turns cooking
- They style each other’s hair in the morning
- They refer Ellie as their baby
NSR
DJSS
- He is Yinu’s homeschool teacher
- Owns a cat named Mars
- Has a mixed relationship with 1010
- Tolerates Green 1010 the most
- increase size whenever he’s mad
- Sayu often appears on his screens to annoy him or just hang out
- He tolerates Sayu more than 1010
- He’s 1010′s pseudo uncle
- Undefeated in basketball
Sayu
- Is Yinu’s primary babysitter
- Sayu, when not piloted, has an A.I. But is limited to cyberspace.
- Her reverse form was made as a joke by Remi
- She knows a lot more than she leads on, and has appeared even on Tatiana’s computer, but she's ultimately harmless.
- She’s often tasked to work as a firewall for NSR’s servers
- She is surprisingly useful to have around.
- There’s several platforms where Sayu can ‘Appear’ physically, similar to Cortana from Halo.
Yinu / Mother
- Yinu is homeschooled
- DJSS is her Homeroom/Science teacher, Neon J is her Shop/P.E teacher. Eve is her Art and Literature teacher, Mother is her Math/History teacher. Tatiana occasionally is her Economics/Math teacher whenever she’s not too busy.
- Sayu’s pilots and 1010 are her ‘classmates’
- She, along with Mother, visits her father’s grave at least once a month.
- She does not like being picked up by anyone other than her mother. so she carries around a step stool.
- She likes that she has multiple babysitters, but wont admit it.
- Tatiana is her god mother/ grandmother figure
1010 / Neon J
-  Yellow often gets stuck on Green’s hoop
- Each member of 1010′s “brain” is a chip that is inserted into their head
- They are referred to by their color’s (I know they got names but I’m terrible at remembering them)
- White often gets picked on for watching Danny Phantom
- They had small ‘baby’ forms and as they ‘aged’ their chips/minds into different ‘aged up’ forms
- Blue was the first designed but last built, white was built first.
- Red’s mohawk used to snap off a lot so recently its been made of a more durable but heavier. this makes Red slower than the rest of 1010
- Whenever 1010 cause chaos, Green and Neon J are often the ones to apologizing for their actions.
- Neon J often refers to 1010 as Teletubbies, which annoys them.
- Neon originally wanted 1010 to be fighter pilots rather than sailors but knew how marketable sailors are so swapped the design.
- When ever Neon J is ‘off duty’ he turns into the socks with sandals dad. making dad jokes left and right.
Eve
- She sometimes visits the sewer hideout and is always grossed out but keeps it to herself to not upset Mayday/Zuke
- She still acts cold towards May, but she is warming up and is in general nicer
- She sleeps in a giant hand shaped bed
- Her entire house’s furniture is just hands and other abstract shapes
- She has several outfits based in other art movements, like surrealism (my favorite movement) and cubism for example
- Mayday and Zuke have spent the night there several times, Mayday has trouble sleeping due to the furniture
- Eve still reminisces when she and Zuke were together, but is still supportive of Zuke and Mayday’s relationship (romantic or otherwise)
(I do ship Mayzuke/Bunkbed lovers but I’m trying to not make it center stage in this post)
- After spending time with Mayday, she realizes she has more in common with her and often joke in Zuke’s expense
- Tatiana is a mentor figure to Eve, and if/when Tatiana retires, Eve will be her successor.
Tatiana
- She often quotes Yzma around her collogues, such as, “I know its called a cruel irony, like my dependence on you.” to DK West
- She’s grown more laid back after the events of the story, but is still stern while working
- Sometimes she jams out with BBJ and even give pointers to Mayday
- If/When she retires she becomes more grandmotherly towards her collogues
- She often slows/stops time during meetings to take a breath/ get a drink or snack
DK West
- Whenever he is not working in his field, He often crashes at the sewer hideout
- When he opens his eyes, his true power is revealed
- His Shadow bull (stand) sometimes appears and vibes with him
- He probably sleeps with his mouth opened
- This man is vibes first
- He radiates the same energy as the Giga-Chad meme

they're siblings, your honor
DannyMay Day 27 - Rain
Summary: A rainy weekday morning with Danny, Jazz, and Ellie.
Ao3 Link
~
Light trickled in through the single window above the sink, gray clouds filtering most of the early morning sun and keeping the kitchen dimly lit. Danny and Jazz sat at the table, dressed for the day and enjoying their respective breakfasts.
Ellie descended the stairs and glided into the room, the sound of slippers dragging against tile nearly drowned out by the pelting rain outside. Jazz held her face over the steam wafting off her tea and sighed before addressing her sister.
“Morning. You want me to make you something?” Ellie shook her head and opened the fridge, sticking her face in it. Danny emptied the cereal box into his half empty bowl, some of the milk spilling over the sides.
“Glue day?” he asked. Ellie held up a finger and water in the shape of the word “yep” appeared above her head. She pulled out a dimly glowing container and plopped down beside Jazz as the water dispersed back into the air.
“You okay for school?” Jazz asked. A thumbs up answered her as the girl dug out a handful of green granola and shoved it in her mouth. “Do you want me to grab a notebook?” Ellie accepted a spoon from her sister and shook her head, holding up a finger. More water letters appeared, this time in front of her.
I’ll just fake a sore throat they won’t call on me
“Nah, go with something more official. Like laryngitis.” Danny said around the food in his mouth. “No one will bother you for a couple days at least.” Ellie pointed her spoon at him.
I don’t wanna get sent to the nurse, genius
Danny waved a hand. “They won’t send you to the nurse. If they try, just write up a note with a fake fancy signature and go back in 10 minutes.”
“Danny, that’s forgery. You shouldn’t be teaching her that.” Danny and Ellie rolled their eyes as Jazz paused to sip her tea. “And finish chewing before you eat, that’s gross.”
Danny made a point of keeping eye contact with Jazz and chewing the last bit of his food with his mouth open. His sisters had clear disgust written on their faces and Ellie dropped a large ball of water on him, drenching him in seconds. He managed to swallow his food before coughing and looking down at his soaked clothes.
“Ellie! Now I’m gonna be wet the whole day.” Ellie kicked him under the table. “Ow, what?”
a) you deserved it b) use a towel
“I’m still gonna be wet.”
no you won’t, that’s what the towel’s for
“Towels don’t make you dry, they just make you less wet.”
Jazz ignored the ensuing argument and continued to sip at her tea. Once the mug had emptied and her siblings finished their food, she cleared her throat. They turned to her.
“Intangibility?” They were both more awake now and looked thoroughly embarrassed, Danny chuckling and letting the water phase off him as Ellie slapped a hand over her face, a random assortment of letters appearing in the air.
They put their dishes in the sink and, with the exception of the half-ghosts fighting over the bathroom, the three siblings continued their morning routines in relative silence. The younger two met up with Jazz at the front door, Danny trailing after Ellie with a loud yawn. Their mom chose that moment to pop out of the lab.
“Alright kids, ready for school?” Maddie asked as she took off her hood and goggles and locked the metal door behind her. She pulled off her gloves and dropped them on the kitchen table before walking over to them. “Your father should be home soon so we can give you a ride.” Ellie looked excited at the offer while her siblings paled.
Jazz held up her keys with a strained smile. “We’re good, thanks mom.”
“Are you sure? It’s really no trouble.”
“Positive,” Danny and Jazz said in unison as they used their hands to block Ellie’s water letters. The youngest Fenton scowled and elbowed both of them. Danny caught her arm and she tried to phase out of it, which led to both of them turning intangible which then led to both of them engaging in a super strength poking match.
“You don’t get a vote. You’re way too much of an adrenaline junkie,” Danny said, a few seconds later groaning in pain and hunching over as Ellie got him in the kidney. She stuck out her tongue and blew raspberries at him as he tried and failed to retaliate.
“Like you’re one to talk,” Jazz said with a snort. “But yeah Ellie, you always want mom and dad to drive us. It’s like you’re trying to get us all half-killed.” The two halfas immediately snapped their heads to her and dropped their hands.
“Now that’s just insensitive,” Danny said, crossing his arms while Ellie shook her head. Jazz rolled her eyes and Maddie sighed.
“Alright I get it, but let me give you kisses before you go.” One by one, they lined up and she gave each of her kids a kiss on the forehead, ending on her youngest. She zipped up Ellie’s jacket and pulled up the hood, tucking in stray hairs as her daughter tried to squirm away.
Moooom! The water above Ellie’s head condensed into thick block letters.
“Oh it’s a glue day? Should I grab a notebook?” Ellie shook her head, an annoyed look on her face.
“She’s gonna fake a throat thing.” Danny said, glancing at the clock on the wall. He nudged Jazz with his shoulder and pulled up the hood of his sweater as Ellie ducked under their mom’s arm and headed out the door.
“Okay okay, we’re going. Bye mom!” Jazz said as she opened her umbrella and followed Danny out with a wave. Maddie stood in the open doorway and waved back, bidding them farewell and then closing the door behind her.
Danny yanked up the roof of Jazz’s convertible from where it was stuck in the back and they got in. The car doors slammed shut and the rain tapped gently on the windows as two seat belts clicked into place. Danny leaned back in his seat and pulled out his phone as Jazz adjusted her mirrors.
“Ellie, seat belt,” she said, turning on the ignition. A heavy burst of water hit the windshield. She squinted at it, leaning forward over the steering wheel to get closer. “What does that say?” Danny glanced up and blew out a large puff of cold air, fogging up the glass and making the watery letters more defined.
guys look!
Danny and Jazz turned to the backseat. It was empty.
Another heavy burst of water dragged their attention back to the front.
I’m right here
“You’re invisible,” Danny said.
I’m not though
“What are we supposed to be seeing?” Jazz asked as she used her sleeve to wipe down her side of the glass.
After about a minute without an answer, the two visible Fenton siblings shared a look. Jazz started to get out of the car and Danny transformed into Phantom when the letters on the windshield started to move.
Water started to slowly float up off the car and condense into a large ball on top of the hood. Jerkily, it morphed and stretched to make an outline in the form of their little sister. The watery shape popped into Ellie's full ghostly glory a moment later.
“Oh shit, nice,” Danny said as he turned human. Ellie grinned and another blast of water hit the windshield.
you’re damn right it is
“That was great Ellie, but we need to go. Get in,” Jazz jabbed a thumb at the backseat. Ellie’s shoulders slumped and she pouted. She flicked a finger and more letters appeared.
aww~ can’t I ride out here? the weather’s so nice
“You can fly if you want, but don’t try to stick to the car. You’ll fall off and hurt yourself.”
but I don’t wanna fly
“So get in,” Danny said. “Jazz is right. You’ll get hurt riding out there.” Ellie frowned and crossed her arms.
you’re just trying to baby me again
Jazz winced. “I didn’t mean it like that. You're a perfectly capable and responsible girl, but riding on the outside of a moving vehicle is dangerous.”
so is ghost hunting
Jazz took a deep breath. “Look, Ellie, Danny’s done this before and he wiped out pretty hard.”
yeah, but I’m not Danny I’m wayyy better at holding onto things and better looking
“We look identical.” Danny turned to Jazz. “And it was your reckless driving that distracted me.”
“You were hit by a bird.” He turned back to his phone.
“Doesn’t wing a bell, sorry.” Ellie clasped her hands together and leaned towards her sister.
I’ll be holding on real tight, okay? I’ll even make myself a seat belt, like a responsible half-ghost
“You’re going to do it anyway, aren’t you?” Jazz said, sighing.
no, of course not who do you take me for, Danny?
He frowned. “When you eat pavement, I’m not gonna say anything.”
“Yes you will,” Jazz said at the same time Ellie sent an identical message. Danny ignored them and went back to texting his friends. The youngest sibling stared at the oldest with big pleading eyes and a wobbling lip.
Jazz held her gaze for a few moments before deflating. “Fine.”
Ellie grinned and changed back into a watery outline of herself. She flopped against the windshield and it was like someone dropped several buckets of water on the car. Once the mini tidal wave had settled, the older siblings watched as an upward stream of water went up to the roof. A moment later, a tapping sound came from the driver side window and they turned to see a watery arm waving at them.
The eldest took that as her cue and pulled out of the driveway. They headed straight for a while, avoiding potholes like the plague, and slowed as they came near the first turn. Jazz kept glancing at the mirrors and almost came to a full stop as they neared the green light.
“Just go. She’ll be fine,” Danny said, trying to hide his own quick glances. “As long as rain brain remembers she can float, nothing bad will happen.”
The irritated honks behind them started to let up as she nodded and pressed on the gas. The car turned in a wide arc, skidding a little on the wet road before steadying as they continued on.
Danny let out a relieved breath and chuckled. “See? When you’re not driving near a flock of birds, there’s nothing to it.” Jazz laughed, her tense grip loosening on the steering wheel.
“So you admit—!” She was cut off by the sounds of a crashing wave, swerving cars, and a cacophony of loud honking and yelling behind them. They both winced. Spoke too soon.

I’m reawatching Broadchurch and notetaking because the wiki sucks and I like my fanfics accurate.
Anyway, I feel absolutely sick, if not especially during the part where Ellie, who is upset, sits on Joe’s lap and they cuddle to make her feel a bit better.
SPOILERS BELOW CUT
Like, it’s so gross considering the fact that not even 24 hours prior was Joe cuddling Danny like that before he killed him. And poor Ellie doesn’t know a thing :(

Zachariah huddled lower and lower in the seat. The car rattled as Gray drove up the bumpy driveway to the house. They put the car in park and glanced at him where he shivered. He clutched his backpack on his lap on the front seat, his knuckles white. They wet their lips and turned off the car.
“It’ll be alright, Zachariah,” they said gently.
Zachariah nodded distractedly, his eyes unfocused. “Mm-hm.”
“Hey,” Gray said softly. Zachariah brought his eyes to theirs. “I’ve already told them you’re coming. No surprises. And they won’t… won’t, ah, hurt you.”
He nodded again. “I kn-know,” he whispered.
Gray pushed out a slow breath as he looked at them. So damned young, no older than Sam. No older than Edrissa.
“What are you worried about, Zachariah?” they murmured, speaking soft and low, just like they did with their family when they all were frightened.
Zachariah gulped and blinked tears away. “I… um… I d-didn’t, um, h-hurt them. But I… I was on the team that did. I… um…” His cheeks flushed and he looked down. “I h-helped… d-drag… Isaac, his name is Isaac… into his cell, once. I’m not the one who, um, who hit him, but… I… j-just, I just… watched. And S-Simmons…” His throat worked as he tried to swallow again. Tears stood in his eyes. “S-Simmons… held a, a gun to… to Sam’s head.” His voice dropped to a whisper. “Their name is… is Sam. And I did… nothing.” His hands clenched in fists around the strap of his backpack.
“Hey,” Gray soothed, and gently placed a hand on Zachariah’s shoulder. “You helped them. Right? Isaac told me you helped carry Sam to the car after they—”
“That doesn’t matter,” Zachariah whispered. “They were… they were being tortured for weeks. I wasn’t part of it but I… I knew. And I did nothing.”
Gray fell silent and pressed their lips together. Their hand stayed firm on Zachariah’s shoulder.
“They let me live,” he breathed. “And I don’t know why.”
Gray tipped their head. “My family is largely a good judge of character. I’m sure they knew—”
“They knew I was willing to work for the Stormbecks,” Zachariah whispered. “And I begged them not to kill me. That’s all they knew about me. That’s it.”
Gray chewed their lip. “That’s all true,” they said softly. “But you also told me you didn’t have a choice but to work for them.”
Zachariah looked up at the house. He shivered. “I didn’t think I’d see any of them again,” he rasped.
Gray laughed before they could stop themself. “I don’t think they expected to see you, either, if I’m honest. But I…” Gray paused. “We’ve all done bad things. All of us. But we try again. And by doing what you did in the end, to help them…”
Some of us have done far worse. They bit down on their lip.
Zachariah nodded sullenly. “Okay,” he whispered, and wiped his nose.
“And…” It’s not permanent. When we find you a permanent home…
That probably wouldn’t help anything. Gray closed their mouth and climbed out of the car. Zachariah followed, his head bent, his eyes shining with tears. He trudged behind Gray as they made their way to the front door. Gray opened the door and stepped into the house.
Everyone was in the front room. Finn and Ellis sat on a couch together, bent over the coffee table, the puzzle there momentarily forgotten as their heads snapped up, their eyes fixed on Gray. Tori sat in an armchair. Vera balanced on the arm of it, a bowl of cereal in her hand. Sam and Edrissa sat on another couch, the sides of their legs touching, their fingers laced together. Isaac stood against the doorway to the kitchen. Everyone was there, except—
Gray’s brow furrowed. “Where’s—”
Gavin walked through the doorway from the kitchen and handed Isaac a mug of tea.
Zachariah gasped. His backpack thumped to the floor in front of him. “You… you have… G-Gavin Stormbeck…”
Gray took a step back. “I… I thought you—”
Vera took a bite of her cereal. “We call him Gavin Uriah now,” she said, seemingly unbothered by Zachariah’s reaction as she crunched at the bran flakes.
Zachariah blinked and shot a glance in Vera’s direction, eyes wide, before he stared again at Gavin. “Y-you…”
“Zachariah, I thought you… you knew?” Gray said, their gaze darting between Zachariah and Gavin.
Zachariah slowly shook his head. His eyes went wider as Isaac took a small step in front of Gavin, placing his mug of tea on the kitchen table. He reached back and clasped Gavin’s hand.
“But I… you… h-he hurt you,” Zachariah breathed. “H-he raped… he tortured you.” His chest heaved with gasping breaths. “I don’t… understand…”
“He was lying,” Isaac said, the faintest hint of a growl in his voice. “He was lying so his mother would trust him. He never wanted to. He was ours, the whole time.” Gavin gazed at Isaac with a look that made Gray’s heart ache. There was trust, there. Sorrow. Love.
They blinked and took a step towards Zachariah. “I’m so sorry,” they murmured. “I thought… I would have prepared you. I thought you knew he made it out with them.”
“Everyone thinks Gavin Stormbeck died on May eleventh,” Zachariah whispered. His eyes were still riveted on Gavin. “I… how…?”
“When you helped us,” Vera said, resting the bowl on her knee while her other hand squeezed Tori’s shoulder, “Gavin was getting Ellis.” She nodded in Ellis’s direction.
Ellis waggled their fingers at Zachariah. “Nice to meet you,” they said sardonically.
“N-nice to meet you, too,” Zachariah mumbled distractedly. He blinked and looked again at Gavin. “He… h-how long… has he…?”
“Ever since I left. The first time.” Gavin spoke up from behind Isaac. He took a step forward and folded himself under Isaac’s arm.
“You… I’m so confused,” Zachariah confessed. He shivered again, wrapping his arms tightly around himself.
“He’s good, Zachariah,” Sam said softly from the couch. Zachariah whimpered softly as he finally turned his gaze on Sam. “He’s with us. He has been, the whole time. The whole t-time we were… were there.”
“Sam,” Zachariah whispered. “I… I w-wondered if you… I worried…” He wrung his hands in front of him. “How…?”
“Finn fixed me up,” they said, pride warming their voice. Finn flushed where they sat on the couch. “They’re a medic. They—”
“I know,” Zachariah mumbled. “I know they… they helped… fix you. After. I knew about that.”
Gray’s chest ached with the sadness, the guilt lacing Zachariah’s voice. Everyone was silent for a moment.
“Gray,” Isaac said softly from where he stood with Gavin. “What happened with DFS?”
Gray’s lips quirked into a smile that the nickname had caught on. They opened their mouth to speak.
“What’s… ‘DFS’?” Zachariah said, looking around, his eyebrows pulling together.
“Daniel Fucking Schiester,” everyone said at once.
Vera burst out laughing. “Yesss,” she hissed.
Gray smirked. “We aren’t, ah, fond of our fearless leader of the north. So that’s our nickname for him. Well, it was Vera’s nickname, but I see it caught on rather quickly.”
“Oh,” Zachariah said in a small voice.
Gray nodded as their gaze move over the room. “We’ll discuss what I learned today,” they said, pushing down the cold thrill of dread that welled up in them as they said it. “And after that we’ll get you cleaned up, get you some new, warm clothes. We have a spare bedroom where we’ll get you set up.” They resisted the urge to glance at Isaac. They knew he’d be blushing anyway, at the mention of the room he never slept in. It would be cleared now, prepared for Zachariah in the three hours the team had had since Gray called them to tell them they were coming.
Zachariah stood frozen with his backpack at his feet. Gray gestured into the room. “Sit anywhere,” they said gently. “We don’t bite.”
“Speak for yourself,” Ellis said with a grin.
Gray rolled their eyes. “Except for Ellis, apparently.”
“You can sit here,” Sam said from their spot on the couch. They moved over, gently maneuvering with their right arm still slinged. Zachariah stared blankly at them for a moment before he bent and grabbed his backpack. He shuffled forward and sat awkwardly on the couch, as far away from Sam as he could get.
“Sorry,” he murmured. “I’m kinda gross. Haven’t had a shower in—”
“We used to live on the road, Zach,” Vera said with a smile. “We’re used to it.”
“Um…” He wet his lips nervously. “P-please… I want to be called, um, Zachariah.”
Vera straightened. “Oh. Sorry.” She pressed her lips into an apologetic line.
Sam pulled the blanket off the back of the couch and passed it to Zachariah. He took it gratefully and pulled it around his shoulders, his eyes unfocused.
Everyone’s gazes slowly made their way back to Gray. They cleared their throat. “So, about… about the mayor.”
“Tell us all about Danny boy’s shady shit,” Vera grumbled. She took another bite of cereal.
“Well…” Gray let out a breath. “He’s, ah… he’s killing people.”
The temperature in the room dropped.
“Who?” Isaac said, his voice careful and measured. His arm tightened around Gavin’s shoulders.
“Anyone he wants,” Gray said through their teeth. “Anyone who comes through with any syndicate affiliation. And anyone who comes through with a syndicate tattoo. That’s what the screening questions are for. He’s weeding out… syndicate agents.” The words tasted bitter on Gray’s tongue.
“But…” Sam’s voice shook. “If people lie… Z-Zachariah, did you tell…?”
“It wouldn’t matter,” he whimpered. He pulled up his sleeve. The Stormbeck crest stretched across the top of his arm in black ink.
Edrissa gasped and shrank back from him. She bit her lips and squeezed Sam’s hand tighter.
“We know what it’s like,” Gray said quickly. “We know that sometimes, you only have the choice between working for the syndicates, or starving. We know that you did what you could. And we… we know you didn’t hurt any of us.”
Edrissa blinked and relaxed slightly.
Zachariah folded forward and buried his face in his hands. He shook his head and muffled a sob. “But I didn’t stop it,” he whispered. “And you…” He lifted his head and looked at Isaac. Miserable tears shone in his eyes and rolled down his cheeks. “I helped them hurt you.”
“No, you didn’t,” Isaac said, his voice tight. “You helped carry me to my cell once. That’s it.”
“After they almost shot you,” Zachariah whispered. “After they… after they beat you.”
“Zachariah,” Isaac said forcefully. Zachariah flinched and glanced at the floor. “Listen. I’ve been put through enough shit to, to tell you that…” Isaac shook his head. “You didn’t hurt me. So… don’t add that to your conscience. Okay? And you… you left. You helped us.” Isaac drew Gavin even closer to his side, almost like it was an unconscious movement.
“Not soon enough,” Zachariah whispered.
“Yes, soon enough,” Sam murmured. Their hand found Edrissa’s again. Zachariah stared at the floor.
Gray cleared their throat. “As far as I know,” they said as they crossed their arms over their chest, “The people going missing are going missing because Daniel is pulling them off of their caravans.” Their throat burned with the echo of tears.
Isaac’s eyes went wide. “But… l-like Caleb…?”
Gray’s eyes fell closed. “Ah. Yes. Caleb is… is dead.”
“No,” Isaac snarled. Gray opened their eyes. Zachariah and Edrissa both flinched away from his anger. “He… that motherfucker… you’re, you’re sure?” He looked at Gray, his eyes blazing with desperation.
“I’m sure,” Gray murmured. Their voice broke. “When we helped Aryn… he was killed that afternoon.”
“Fuck me,” Vera breathed. Tori reached up and clasped her hand. Tori’s eyes were bright, focused. She looked more present than she had been in several days. And even with the appearance of Zachariah… Warring hope and despair twisted through Gray’s heart.
“We’re… g-going to do something about it, right?” Finn asked, hesitant. They squeezed Ellis’s hand. “We can’t just…”
“No,” Gray said through numb lips. “We can’t.”
“Does he know you know?” Isaac said. Darkness brewed in his eyes, trembled in his limbs. And beside him Gavin looked…
He looked terrified. But below that, there was a hardness. Gavin looked murderous.
Gray briefly wondered what it would be like to go to war against Daniel, if the team had the ingenuity of Gavin Stormbeck at their disposal.
They shook themself slightly. I will never, never ask that of him. I’ll never ask him to use himself for destruction. He’ll never have to do that again.
“Yes,” Gray said softly. “He knows. He told me himself.”
Vera scoffed. “And he thinks we’re okay with that? He thinks we’re just gonna… what… let that go?”
“I don’t think he gives a damn what we think,” Gray said heavily. “He made that perfectly clear.”
“But we’re gonna stop him… right?” Sam said. They sat up straighter. “We can’t let him just… do this.”
“No,” Gray said, clenching and unclenching their fists. “We can’t. Not now that we… know. But… he made… some very explicit threats.”
Vera rolled her eyes. “Forgive me for not considering Daniel Fucking Schiester to be oh-so-scary after we’ve destroyed the Stormbecks,” she said, not batting an eye at Gavin.
“I do,” Gray said, watching Gavin carefully. He stood beside Isaac, strong, the violence in him falling and slipping beneath the surface again. “As far as we’re concerned, he’s the most powerful person in the north. He controls the entire refugee recovery program. He holds the line, and who knows what kind of resources he could muster if he asked for them?” Gray’s gaze moved over their family. “I consider him to be just as much a threat as Joseph Stormbeck. More, maybe. Because up here, he can control our allies.”
No one spoke.
Tori raised her head to look at Vera. Vera gazed back and leaned gently against her shoulder. When Tori met Gray’s eyes, they shivered. Fire burned in her eyes, and fierceness, and everything else that had been so gone from her ever since she appeared on their doorstep weeks before.
“Fuck ‘im,” Tori murmured, and her voice sounded strong. “We can’t let him do this.”
A painful smile pulled at Gray’s mouth as they looked back at her. She held Gray’s gaze. She didn’t look away, didn’t sink back against Vera. They nodded. “No,” they murmured. “We can’t.”
“So what’s the plan?” Isaac said, tense, shaking. “How did you find out about him, anyway?” He jutted his chin at Zachariah.
“One of Daniel’s people,” Gray said, bracing for an outcry. There was none.
“Does this person know Danny is killing them?” Vera said.
“I don’t think he does, no,” Gray said. They shuffled their feet.
“Would he be willing to keep sending us people?” Finn said, sitting forward. “I mean, if we could run the same operation we ran with Tori, just funnel people north and place them with people once we find houses… I mean, DFS doesn’t control every route in, does he? Would people notice if folks started showing up farther north without being sent through DFS?”
“I don’t know,” Gray said with a shrug. “I’d have to do more research. Which means I’d have to continue helping Daniel with the screening process.”
“I don’t think that would hurt,” Isaac said tightly. “Might even catch a few that way.”
“But we’re not going to… to wait until we have that figured out, right?” Sam said, and made a small, strange motion with their right hand where it sat tied against their chest. “I mean… we can start… start saving them now, right? We don’t have to wait?”
“Mathias said he only gets a few a year,” Gray said.
“I doubt that’s all,” Isaac murmured. “I’ll bet that’s just all he finds.”
“Yeah, I bet that’s true.” Vera drew a hand through her hair.
“But we’re doing this, right?” Isaac said, his eyes flashing. “We can’t… Jesus, Gray, we’ve been up here for… for three weeks and he’s been doing this evil shit right under our noses…”
“If we all agree to it,” Gray said. “We take a vote. Because this will affect all of us. This puts all of us in danger.” They leveled their gaze at Gavin. “Especially you.”
“Don’t give a shit,” Gavin said through his teeth. “He can’t… fuck. These people coming through… I understand when it was, was me, but… these people aren’t like me.”
Isaac pulled Gavin close and pressed a kiss into his hair. Zachariah watched with his mouth open.
“I’m for it,” Ellis said softly. “But I… I don’t…” They placed their hand on their belly and held Finn’s hand tightly.
“We can distance you from the operation,” Gray said. Finn leaned forward and opened their mouth to speak. Slowly, they closed their mouth again and looked at Ellis. “Does anyone else have any concerns?”
One by one, Gray looked around the room and met everyone’s eyes. One by one, each member of their family nodded.
“Alright,” they said softly. They reached into their pocket and pulled out their phone. “We’re doing this.”
They went to Mathias’s number, still not saved in the phone. They tapped it and typed out a message:
Send us each one like him that you find. And be careful. Give me a call when you can.
They smiled gently as they slid the phone back into their pocket.

NHL Expansion Draft 2021: Full list of players available for Seattle Kraken
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The NHL announced the protected lists for the 30 teams involved in the NHL Expansion Draft. (Vegas is exempt.) With the names of those protected come the guys who could be snatched up by the Seattle Kraken. There are a number of big names that have everyone trying to figure out just what general manager Ron Francis will do. Will he take Canadiens netminder, and future Hall of Famer, Carey Price and his hefty cap hit? Is Vladimir Tarasenko the sniper he needs or is his health a big question mark? There's also a number of guys who would fit in nicely but are free agents and the chances of signing them are not high (i.e. Alex Ovechkin).  EXPANSION DRAFT: Date, time, rules & more for Seattle Kraken team selectionRegardless of what Francis, coach Dave Hakstrol and Co. end up doing, there's a good chance the Kraken will be a playoff contender in just their first season. For now, let the intrigue and the guessing WWRFD (that's: what will Ron Francis do?) begin. Here's a look at every player they can pick.

City Lights Bookstore’s Antiracist Reading List | UPDATED
Tumblr media
Human creativity is integral to revolutionary resistance—the urgent plea, the silenced cry, the righteous rage. It is imperative that we educate and illuminate ourselves to deepen our commitment to justice and equity for Black people and all people of color, and to pave the way for radical systemic change.

round up // JANUARY 21
Tumblr media
New year, not-so-new Crowd vs. Critic! It’s another batch of films, TV, music, and reads that were new to me this month and think you would enjoy, too. As we cozy up inside for the winter, nothing warms you up like a good piece of pop culture.
January Crowd-Pleasers
Tumblr media
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Does this sequel reach the heights of 2017’s Wonder Woman? No, but I wish more superhero movies were like this one. I explain why at ZekeFilm. Crowd: 9.5/10 // Critic: 8/10
Tumblr media
21 Bridges (2019)
A solid action crime thriller with a solid Chadwick Boseman at the center. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7.5/10
Tumblr media
The Lethal Weapon Series (1987-98)
I watched the first Lethal Weapon in 2017 for ZekeFilm, but now I’ve a decade’s pleasure of progressively over-the-top action sequences and progressively more absurd ways to destroy Roger Murtaugh’s (Danny Glover) house. The Murtaugh/Riggs bromance holds this progressively sillier series together, and an supporting cast of charismatic actors (Jet Li, Darlene Love, Chris Rock, Rene Russo) are game for whatever comes their way. Joe Pesci is the true MVP. Series Crowd: 9/10 // Series Critic: 7/10
Tumblr media
The High Note (2020)
Tracee Ellis Ross’s Grace Davis is a diva in every sense of the word. A high-strung and highly successful singer, she’s also highly demanding of her assistant Maggie (Dakota Johnson), who wants to step out of her shadow and become a music producer. This rom-com-adjacent flick is one of the most fun escapes I’ve had from a 2020 movie, and it’s perfect for a girls’ night in. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10
Tumblr media
Double Feature—Rom-Coms With a Magical Twist: Just My Luck (2006) + When In Rome (2010)
Disclaimer: These movies are not good. In fact, they’re junk, but they’re my kind of junk. In Just My Luck (Crowd: 7.5/10 // Critic: 6/10), Lindsay Lohan loses her life-long lucky streak when she kisses schlimazel Chris Pine. And When in Rome (Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 6/10), Kristen Bell attracts unwanted admirers (Will Arnett, Danny DeVito, Josh Duhamel, Jon Heder, and real-life future husband Dax Shepard) after she steals their coins from a wishing fountain. To their credit, both of these movies know they’re silly, which means you have permission to just sit back and laugh along with (or, honestly, at) them.
Tumblr media
WandaVision (2021)
I sometimes fear for the world of entertainment when I think of how much intellectual property Disney has gobbled up, but WandaVision is evidence the company is a benevolent dictator at least for now. This odd delight is a send up and a tribute to sitcoms like I Love Lucy, I Dream of Jeannie, and The Brady Bunch, and Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen are so charming and weird I don’t need whatever mysterious sub-plot they’re building.
Tumblr media
Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993)
If you want to make the most of watching Robin Hood: Men in Tights, first watch Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), an action flick I saw last February and didn’t include in my monthly Round Up. This Mel Brooks spoof is a direct response that self-serious Kevin Costner adventure, even down to copying its costumes. While I wish I could find a Mel Brooks comedy with any substantial female character (in every movie I’ve seen so far, the joke is either, “She’s got a great rack!” or “Wow, she’s an uggo!”), I still couldn’t stop laughing at this 104-minute version of the Robin Hood scene in Shrek. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 8/10
Tumblr media
Aliens (1986)
Peak ‘80s action. Peak alien grossness. Peak girl boss Sigourney Weaver. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 8/.510
Tumblr media
Big (1988)
After talking about Laverne & Shirley with Kyla on SO IT’S A SHOW?, I had to check out Penny Marshall’s classic. While a few moments haven’t aged so well, its heart is sweet and the script is hilarious. And that Tom Hanks? I think he’s going places. Crowd: 9.5/10 // Critic: 8/10
Tumblr media
Unstoppable (2010)
I’ve laughed at SNL’s spoof of this movie for a decade, so it’s about time I got around to enjoying this action thriller very loosely based on the true story of a train that got away from its conductor. Denzel Washington (“You’re too old!”) and Chris Pine (“You’re too young!”) are our heroes in this over-the-top ridiculousness, and their chemistry is so extra it makes me hope they team up for another movie again. Crowd:  9/10 // Critic: 7/10
January Critic Picks
Tumblr media
Double Feature—‘90s Space Adventures: Apollo 13 (1995) + Contact (1997)
I have no desire to join Tom Cruise as he films in space, but I know I’ll be pumped to watch whatever he makes because I love sci-fi and space  adventures. Apollo 13 (Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 9/10) tells the story of an almost-disastrous NASA mission in the ‘60s, and it taps into our hope for the human spirit to overcome obstacles. Contact (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 8.5/10) surmises what might happen if we received communication from extraterrestrial life, and it taps into our struggle to reconcile faith and science.
Tumblr media
McCartney III by Paul McCartney (2020)
I spent January catching up on the albums on Best of 2020 lists, and the one I listened to for hours and hours was Paul McCartney’s latest solo album. Catchy, thoughtful, and musically surprising, it ranges from pop to rock to folk in 45 minutes and still feels like it’s over too soon. Like Tom Hanks, this Paul McCartney guy is going places!
Tumblr media
The Thin Man Series (1934-47)
Like Lethal Weapon, I watched the first installment of The Thin Man awhile back, and Kyla and I even covered the series on our podcast. But thanks to a full series marathon on TCM earlier this month, I’ve now laughed through all five. When you talk about great chemistry, you’ve got to talk about William Powell and Myrna Loy, who make Nick and Nora’s marriage feel lived in and romantic as they solve crimes together. Witty, suspenseful, and jaunty, this series is still sexy cool over 80 years later. (Also, Asta? Still one of the cutest dogs in cinema.) Series Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 8.5/10
Tumblr media
The King and I (1956)
Here’s your regularly scheduled reminder Hollywood works differently now, and many casting decisions of the ‘50s wouldn’t fly today. What has aged well in this film: The Rodgers and Hammerstein music and the sumptuous costumes and set design. I love extravagant musicals of yesteryear—perhaps it’s time for Hollywood to revisit and remake The King and I for modern audiences?

Inauguration Day
In a year with no major televised events with celebrities in a room together, Inauguration Day felt like the most exciting cultural event in ages. We’ve been missing major fashion, but then we got Lady Gaga! We’ve been missing live performances, but then we got Amanda Gorman! And I got a lot of tears during that poem—not just me, right?

Good Reads
Writing that made me think and smile this month:
Steven Soderbergh’s list of everything he read, watched, and listened to this year, Extension765.com (2020) – An indirect inspiration for these monthly Round Ups!
“My Year of Making Lists,” NewYorker.com (2020) – I made a lot of lists in 2020, so I feel this author’s #mood
“Betty White Says She Will Spend Her 99th Birthday Feeding Two Ducks Who Visit Her ‘Every Day,’“ CBSNews.com (2021) - “Betty is a treasure,” I say as I watch The Proposal for the 99th time
“A Sculpture’s Unusual Journey to SLAM [St. Louis Art Museum],” SLAM.org (2020) – With a casual mention of an attraction I never knew about in St. Louis
“The Culture Is Ailing. It’s Time for a Dr. Fauci for the Arts.” WashingtonPost.com (2020) – An idea that occurred to me a few months ago: Why don’t we have an Arts Cabinet?
“The Arts Are in Crisis. Here’s How Biden Can Help.” NYTimes.com (2021) – Partly in response to that Washington Post piece, a historical look at how artists have made it through difficult times in the past and how we can revive artists’ livelihoods mid- and post-pandemic
“The Right’s Message to Silicon Valley: 'Free Speech for Me, But Not for Thee,'” TIME.com (2021) – A more thoughtful and less reactionary take on a volatile moment in the history of modern technology
“'It Makes Me Sick With Grief': Trump's Presidency Divided Families. What Happens to Them Now?” TIME.com (2021) – A study on how politics has done damage to family dynamics in America
“Help, the Only Cinema I Can Handle Is Zac Efron Prancing Angrily in High School Musical 2,” Vulture.com (2021) - In a lot of ways, same
“50 Easy Things To Do When You are Anxious,” ShopTwentySeven.com (2021) – I especially endorse coloring, puzzling, and watching happy movies!
Tumblr media
Double Feature—Miss Marple Mysteries: Murder at the Gallop (1963) + Murder Ahoy (1964)
Remember when I was all like, “Watch these Agatha Christie movies so you’re not sad Death on the Nile is delayed”? Remember when I said I was just a few movies away from becoming an Agatha Christie junkie? Well, I think I’m there because I can’t stop with the murder mysteries! Margaret Rutherford is a treasure whether she’s solving a murder at a horse ranch or on a boat, and a cast of colorful supporting characters (including Rutherford’s husband) makes these breezy instead of heavy. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8/10
Tumblr media
8½ (1963)
File this with 2001: A Space Odyssey—I don’t know if I really understood this film, but I think I liked it? Federico Fellini’s surrealist, male gaze-y drama blurs the lines between reality and imagination, love and dysfunction, and the past and maybe some future that involves clowns? What resonated with me was the story of a director with creative block, wondering if he’s already peaked and if he’ll create anything worthwhile again. Crowd: 6/10 // Critic: 9/10
Tumblr media
Sense and Sensibility: The Screenplay and Diaries by Emma Thompson (1995)
Sense and Sensibility is not just one of my favorite Jane Austen adaptations—it’s one of my all-time favorite films. One of the co-hosts of one of my favorite podcasts has raved many-a-time about Emma Thompson’s journals from the making of film, so it was only a matter of time before I read them myself. Witty, informative, and all-around lovely, Thompson’s journals are an excellent insight into the filmmaking process and how novels are adapted.
Also in January…
I reviewed the new-ish documentary Flannery for ZekeFilm, which is all about the writer Flannery O’Connor and feels a little like going back to high school English class.
In addition to the Lethal Weapon and Thin Man series, I rewatched all of the X-Men series this month. You can see everything I am watching on Letterboxd, including favorites I love returning to (i.e. X-Men: Days of Future Past) and the movies I try that don’t make my monthly recommendations (i.e. The Wolverine).
