Understandable that they edited it (so much!?) for the final cut. The censors would probably go apoplectic if they did not!

I know the post-series Weibo posts aren’t exactly the most canon thing, but one thing I love about them is how silly Xiao Lanhua is in them. She’s so fully herself.

She’s trying every food in Lucheng on New Year’s (DFQC buys them all for her of course), and she’s being confused but entertained by the opera, and she’s drawing terrible art, and she’s back to sleeping in sometimes. Even if you don’t consider the weibo posts and just use the canon epilogue, there’s such a ‘XLH will be XLH vibe to it.’

It’s nice because we don’t get to see that much post goddess XLH where she’s not pretending to be someone she’s not. The trauma and the grief are inevitably going to make her a more serious person at times, but she was already heading down that path anyway. She’d learned to take a serious, measured view of things even before she ‘dies.’ She views her roles as Moon Queen and Goddess as something she is genuinely dedicated to.

But now we know that despite all that, at least once DFQC returns, she’s still able to be the light-hearted, indulgent, gremlin of a character she is meant to be. And that’s very important to me.

LBFAD rewatch observations part 5

1. Shangque is so pure and straightforward.

2. The way DFQC immediately latches onto any explanation of XLH's behavior of saving him. When Shangque says "she had an opportunity to escape but she gave it up to save you. It shows that..." and DFQC eagerly turns to him and says "shows that?" like yesss please?!?! tell me what does this mean?!?!? someone! anyone! And then immediately rejects the idea of "she's becoming a loyal subject like me!"

3. No words for how beautifully soft that petal shower scene is. Her joy and his smile. 🥺

4. The great Dongfang Qincang and his weakness for Flower Cakes made by his wife.

5. "Damutou is more intimate" !! 🤝🏼 "You can call me whatever you want" !! 🙃🙃🙃🥺

6. Man. Dylan Wang's acting in that "high on XLH's emotions" scene was soooo goood. The tortured joy where he is laughing but you also see his frustration. The angry sadness where you can see him crying but also the rage. His shaking hands as he grabs the Jade Ring and the deep breaths to ground himself. Oof. *Chefs kisses*

7. Also can we just talk about the multiple times he has made a fool of himself in front of his advisors because of her shenanigans but like....it never impacted his reign. They just figured out logical explanations and kind of just went with it... (excluding Xunfeng ofcourse because he actually can and does question DFQC). Like his advisors must be having headaches from the whiplash of emotions he gave them 😆

8. Sulking DFQC and coaxing XLH are the cutest. Ignoring her as they leave the pond illusion. The way he is shaking as he tells her she could have died if he didn't come on time and that she has to stay within his sight always. Her offering up the Destiny Book to please him. His disgruntled "oh so you fixed it right away for Changheng, I see how it is" her "ah but you know what saved me! This little inside thing that only you and I know!". And then finally him easing off and telling her "I would find you anywhere" and her teary eyed "My master who was the dearest person to me said the same thing and you...." All the little ways these two say "I love you I love you" without yet realizing that they do.

9. HIS HANDS. When she passes out and he catches her. His hands just rubbing her shoulder out of affection, concern, the need to feel she is still here alive with him. Ahh. That subtle movement 👌. (Also. Her just passing out from the exertion of her powers and maybeee from the almost realization that this menace of a king, the great Moon Supreme, might also be someone very dear to her. Like yes gurl I too would just pass out on the brink of such a realization)

10. "Are you still angry?" *cute little smile* "No" *sulk* "Yes you are" *pout*... "Damutou, I'm soooryy" *big puppy eyes* "Eat." *melted under the ray of her sunshine*. THE CUTEST BABIESS. (I love that she apologizes. Despite the fact that her intentions had never been to run but she acknowledges that she put him in a bad situation. That she sees how much this upset him and she is sorry for that.)

11. "You can't just come into my heart" 🤝🏼 "I can go wherever I want" 💀💀

12. "Why was I allowed to in the past? What's the difference now?" XLH: UHM SIR I WASN'T IN LOVE WITH YOU THEN. DO YOU MIND IM TRYNA HANDLE THESE NEW FEELINGS.

13. DFQC is such a heavy full of depth and compelling character and I just love Dylan Wang's portrayal and I just--- gahhh! *muffled screams*

14. I don't think I can express in words how much I love the scene of DFQC turning away from XLH while he weeps and then turning and collapsing into her. It is art. It is poetry. It is EVERYTHING. Dylan Wang's acting my god. The pain the sorrow the need for comfort its all so beautifully expressed on his face. XLH's tears and pain for him. The hands. Ofcourse the hands 😭😭 Also. XLH refusing to give up until she found the thorn pricking at him and pulled it out so he could heal. I love her. For seeing the pain and anger buried in him and saying "something here is not right. His reputation as a terrible monster who slaughters his family is wrong. I will figure this out and I will help him however I can" and then doing it! Refusing to back down even at the last minute when he says it isn't her place to ask! Being there for him as he goes through the grieiving process. Fiercely defending him against everyone who dares to say he is heartless. God. I love them both.

15. Head empty no thoughts just DFQC's little hand gesture stopping XLH in her tracks before she can come to stop him from taking the lightening strikes.

16. DFQC asking her to teach him how to be warm towards people because no one ever taught him that 😭😭

Her teaching him how to smile by showing it to him and then suggesting to also "hug" Xunfeng and his love adled brain IMMEDIATELY going "How?" *puppy eyes* and her immediately almost folding him into a hug but just barely stopping herself! You cannot tell me he did not know that would happen. He definitely knew she would "show" not "tell" and most definitely wanted her to hug him. We already seen him be sneaky as heck when telling her "No I am still weak I neeeeed you to help me walk" when it was straight up nonsense 😄 Even adding little fake coughs to convince her. I love me a sneaky husband who tries to coax more love out of his wife.

18. "This is the first time I have ever thanked a person. Don't refuse me." 😭🥲

That entire interaction of theirs is so giggle inducingly cute like omg the smiles they can barely contain the teasing "are my flower cakes ready?" "did you finish your medicine" "its too bitter *pout* but I did it, not a single drop left! *satisfied smirk*" AAHAHHHHHHHH but this line !! "Don't refuse me" !! Don't take this moment from me! Just let me adore youuuuuuuuu!!!!

Seriously, this guy is a MAJOR rabbit hole. And his son, Isaac Edrehi, gets even crazier. He was arrested in Newcastle in 1836, moves to America, becomes the inspiration for Longfellow’s “Spanish Jew” in Tales of a Wayside Inn, peddles herbal medicines, publishes an “Oriental Travelogue” about the Ottoman Empire and republishes his father’s odd book about the Ten Tribes, and generally becomes one of those strange characters wandering around the religious scene of 19th-century America (there’s even a blog of someone who was researching him a few years ago — I think I’ll drop her a line!). Our fields (sort of) intersect!

HDR Content Review

HDR (High Dynamic Range) acronym first appeared at the CES 2016. High in this case referred to a higher peak brightness and greater black depth compared to the traditional SDR range. The emergence of this technology is a logical continuation of the development of digital technologies in the TV segment, because their new generation already provided an image playback with a much higher quality. In particular, the almost instantaneous pixel switching time in OLED matrices, and FALD in LED TVs expanded ranges of contrast and detail. As known, increasing the brightness gradations extends the variety of displayed combinations of blue, red, green and their shades. The list of modern television standards includes Rec.709, DCI-P3 and Rec.2020 / 2100. HDR10 and Dolby Vision use the DCI-P3 and Rec.2020 / 2100, the color damut of which significantly exceeds HD in the Rec.709 standard.

In fact, HDR TV expands the color gamut, increasing the saturation and color accuracy with the help of 12 bit color depth. In turn, increasing the range of contrast and color accuracy directly affect the realism and volume of the image. As a result, the screen displays a significantly brighter saturated image.

In general, new HDR technology includes three main components. In particular, it requires a TV with support for HDR format, a broadcast standard for transmitting HDR content and video in HDR format. Each of them, in turn, requires solving complex engineering problems. In addition, their matching also causes some problems.

Some features of HDR-technology

The distortion of the original directorial color and lighting solutions in the frame illustrates this situation well. For example, the creation of modern video content uses an extensive palette of colors within the digital cinematic DCI-P3 standard. But traditional SDR-TVs use a narrower standard Rec.709 that does not display many shades. As a result, the viewer perceives such content much paler. Metadata contains accurate information about the areas of the required dimming, brightening, adding red, purple, etc. Only in this case, TV will be able to accurately reproduce the original directorial content. But the transfer of metadata required an additional extension of the HDMI standard. As known, HDMI 2.0 supports the transfer of only static data. HDMI 2.0a is the first standard to support the transfer of dinamic metadata. HDMI 2.1 - is its further improvement. At CES 2019, LG introduced the first 4K OLED TVs with HDMI 2.1 support.

Thus, technology requires HDR-content. Of course, the technology of its creation is much more complicated compared to SDR. HDR format requires the creation of metadata for each frame and their dynamic transmission for playback without distortion. Therefore, initially, the market offered a very limited HDR content. In fact, only Amazon, Netflix and Vudu services offered a small number of films in this format. However, Technicolor company developed and proposed a set of “Intelligent Tone Management” utilities for converting SDR content into pseudo-HDR. This technology has significantly optimized the restoration of original content, expanding the prospects of HDR. As a result, in the last years we see a rapid expansion of its range.

Technicolor was the first to use remastering to reformat popular black-and-white films, including the iconic The Wizard of Oz.

Further, company founded the UHD Alliance. Using their own development, Technicolor offered a platform broadcast with video on demand M-Go. Today Samsung has an exclusive agreement for its TVs, by analogy with Ultra HD content. The company is developing HDR technology for broadcast television and HDR-compatible set-top boxes. As known, Netflix is a pioneer in 4K / Ultra HD streaming. Today, it's actively working with HDR technology, promising the appearance of HDR - content by the end of this year. The company is also working on HDR-remastering of its own video, including Marco Polo.

After the full launch of this technology, the system will be able to determine the HDR compatibility of your TV and accordingly select the available content. Amazon company also announced its intention to create original TV content with HDR support.

Ultra HD Blu-ray

Of course, a high level of compression to stream high-quality video content significantly limits the broadcast. Blu-ray discs with their huge capacity have virtually no such limitations. Not surprisingly, the company also decided to join a new promising direction. One of the things to appreciate about Love Between Fairy and Devil is they actually kiss! Hurrah!!! ... and... and... and... there was a loooooooot of kisses in this cdrama!

Not the stereotypical asian drama kiss where a scene requires a passionate kiss but they just bump lips, or both are just weirdly still, or where one tries and the other is just stood there unmoving, like a statue.

ETA: I almost always have an issue with bump lips kissing scene. We are meant to be watching people who are in love but when they kiss, they seem like they have been forced to do it and have their lips bump and motionless for like 30 seconds. I don’t mean torrid full blown tongue french kissing because that would ruin the romanticism that we love most about cdramas. In LBFAD, when they kiss, they look like they actually love each other but it is still in the PG side.

* there were of course the kisses where they are both just still but it fits in with the story line, so no complaints

Xiao Lanhua mimicked what Qiuyue had done and climbed astride the motorcycle behind her. Dongfang Qingcang followed suit. It was a tight squeeze to be sure. His rear sat awkwardly on the raised edge of the leather seat. He thought of it as a horse and wrapped his arms around his wife’s center. She had wrapped her own arms around the waist of the woman in front of her. 

“How is this powered?” Dongfang Qingcang thought to ask.

“Cultivation of course,” Qiuyue said. 

“That’s what we thought!” Xiao Lanhua replied. “But in the mortal world they don’t have that…”

“They don’t have cultivation period.” The other woman waved dismissively. “But we do, and it’s the greatest natural resource in the four realms. We don’t run out of it, and we can use it to do almost anything we need, including powering this motorcycle.” She patted the handlebars. “Honestly, how do you not know these things? They do the same thing in Haishi City and Shuiyuntian…” 

They mused on how to answer, but it turned out, she wasn’t waiting for their response. 

“Okay, let’s go.” Qiuyue grinned. “Giddy-yup.” 

The motorcycle started with such suddenness that Dongfang Qingcang felt he was going to be thrown off the back. It was loud, and within just a few moments it was cutting through the sand as if it were a beast swimming through water; with total ease. 

The wind whipped by them, so quickly as to disorient him, and his hair blew every which way. There wasn’t a moment where he wasn’t spitting out his mouth. And sand too. That was everywhere. In his clothes, in his hair, and in his mouth. 

And Xiao Lanhua? She was laughing. She was letting out little whoops and she had whipped her head back in pure joy as to what they were experiencing. She was having the time of her life.  Her hair still flew into her face, but it wasn’t quite as long as his, and it seemed to be cooperating better. 

At one point she removed one hand from around Qiuyue’s waist and screamed in glee as she raised her arm above her head, as if skimming the sky. 

“Damutou…” she yelled over the din of the motorcycle. She glanced back at him, and upon seeing his chagrined expression and his hair flying every which way, covering so much of his face that it looked like he’d just been doing handstands, she laughed even harder, almost shrieked. 

When they’d met, Xiao Lanhua had been terrified at first when they rode Shangque. This may have been in part because she was being spirited away from her home on the back of a dragon, by the man who had been called the greatest enemy of the four realms. But nonetheless, she got over it and soon she started to enjoy flying in the sky on the back of her black dragon friend. He had no idea how much her tolerance had increased until now. 

But a ride on Shangque, unless he was being deliberately obstinate, which he had only done once or twice to his credit, was in Dongfang Qingcang’s opinion, smooth as silk compared to this. Was it just the environment that made this ride so unpleasant? He did not want to know.  He just wanted to stop eating sand.

Dongfang Qincang pulls away from the kiss to look down at her, his Xiao Lanhua. 500 years they have waited for this and he can see the desperation in her eyes as she clutches at him a bit tighter. Holding her face in his hands he wipes away the streams of tears running down her face with his thumb. "Xiao Lanhua, don't cry. I am here." She nods her head vigorously but shuts her eyes tight, afraid to open them lest he be a dream. He pulls her into his chest and discreetly wipes the errant tear escaping his eyes. No more tears, he wants to say to her and pulls back slightly, but stops. Her body is shaking with muffled sobs as she buries her face in his chest and grips his robe so tightly he fears for her circulation. He pulls her closer once more, stroking her hair. After a while, he picks her up and carries her to the bench, settling her snuggly beside him. 

"Xiao Lanhua," he says gently. Finally she takes a deep breath and looks up at him. He once again wipes furiously at her tears, holding back his own with strain. "Damutou" she whispers, her voice raw and weak. He is nearly undone from the pain in her voice and takes a hold of her hands to steady his. She looks down at their entwined hands and he wonders if she's seeing the same image; the last time they said goodbye and he left her alone, with empty outstretched hands.

"Forgive me Xiao Lanhua" he says, still staring at their hands. When she doesn't reply he looks up, anxiously, to meet her eyes. Her eyes are so filled with tears he can see nothing else. "Damutou, don't look at me like that" she says as she rubs a gentle hand across his furrowed brows. "I have spent the past 500 years haunted by this look on your face. Of all those days when you had looked at me so anxiously and I--" she breaks off on a sob and looks away, her head bent. He grabs the hand still resting on his face and pulls it to his lips. "Xiao Lanhua, look at me". She shakes her head. "I--I hurt you so--so much Damutou" she cries out, gasping for air. His heart is aching so much he feels it like a physical pain. When she clutches at her own chest he  grips her shoulders and pulls her upright. This is too much. It is unbearable. Her pain, her agonized sobs, too reminiscent of the ones he heard over and over again for the past 500 years from the moment he had said goodbye. Those cries that had echoed in his ears for eternity. Damutou don't leave me. Come back don't leave me. They have to stop. Both of them can't bear more. Taking a shaky breath he takes her chin in his hands to raise her eyes to his. 

"Xiao Lanhua, you ordered me to come back and now I am here. Did you not prepare any welcome for me?" he says with a small hesitant smile. She stares into his eyes where he hopes she sees his silent plea. When she takes deep calming breaths and nods slowly, he grips her hands and pulls her up with him, tentatively allowing his smile to widen a bit. "Well then, where are my flower cakes? I hope you made them in all the flavors I like. I have been hungry for 500 years you know." Her hands in his tighten and her eyes get glassy again. He gives her hand a squeeze and pulls her gently to the main hall. "Come Xiao Lanhua, there are flower cakes to eat and sunsets to watch." He smiles even wider at her, hoping it is enough to wipe the sadness away. A sinkhole is opening inside of him, and all he can see are her anguished eyes. Those eyes that used to look up at him with so much sunshine that he thought he would never need to see another sunrise so long as he had her. How can he ever forgive himself for taking that light away? He pushes these thoughts aside and turns to her.

Later, as they watch the sunset and she is calmer he pulls her even closer to his side to give her a kiss on the head. "There isn't a single thing in this life or any other that you need to ask forgiveness for Xiao Lanhua." She stiffens then slowly straightens to look at him solemnly for a long time. For a few beats he is afraid he has made her cry again, but she blinks away her tears and puts a hand on his heart, piercing him with her intense gaze.

"And you as well, Damutou." He feels a stinging behind his eyes and something warm slip down his cheek. Before he realizes, she reaches out to gently wipe the tears. "No more tears" she says, looking up at him with wide determined eyes. He gives her a small nod, before pulling her into him. His hand stroking her hair, he closes his eyes, and breathes in deeply.

They make no promises this time, no pleas to never leave. There is no need. It is as sure as the ground beneath them, the sun setting behind them, and the hearts beating in synchrony between them. They are home.

Dalrymple Islet (Damut Island)

Date unknown. Active; focal plane 24 m (79 ft); white flash every 5 s. 21 m (69 ft) steel skeletal tower. No photo available, and the tower is not seen in Google's distant satellite view. Dalrymple has a Torres Pilots base and marks the eastern end of the piloted section of the Great Northeast Channel. Located at the west end of a small island in the center of the Torres Strait. Accessible only by boat. Site and tower closed. Operator/site manager: AMSA. Admiralty K3288; NGA 9708.
