The red ribbon awareness campaign started in the spring of 1991 when costume designer Marc Happel attended a Manhattan meeting of the Visual AIDS artist caucus. He had an idea for an awareness symbol they’d been searching for. He proposed the red-ribbon design you see above. He said he took inspiration from yellow ribbons he’d seen tied around trees to honor servicemen. The artist caucus loved Happel’s idea and ran with it. Local businesses donated supplies. Cutting, folding, and pinning soon went into overdrive at “ribbon bees” — like quilting bees, only designed to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS. Within a few weeks, the ribbons were often spotted on NYC streets, though few people knew what they meant.
Tumblr media
Then Daisy Eagan, the 11-year-old star of The Secret Garden, accepted the show’s first award, best featured actress. And she was wearing a red ribbon! Kevin Spacey also wore a ribbon. So did Penn and Teller. By the end of the show, almost every celebrity who walked onstage had worn a prominent red ribbon, though no one told viewers why — possibly because the network threatened to cut audio if anyone talked about AIDS. That mystery-marketing tactic was probably unintentional, but it couldn’t have been more powerful if professionals had planned it. By the end of the next day, the whole nation was buzzing. Why had all those famous actors worn identical ribbons? Why didn’t they talk about them? What’s going on? Answers came fast as celebrities and AIDS activists gave interviews to local and national media. To paraphrase: “HIV/AIDS is a humanitarian crisis killing our friends and neighbors. We as a nation are not doing nearly enough. We wear the red ribbon to call for greater love and more action. We ask you, all of you watching, to wear the ribbon too.” The nation responded, and not just in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Yes, from the Oscars and People’s Choice Awards to beauty pageants and town halls, red ribbons became de rigueur fashion, but the ribbons weren’t just for celebrities. I flew home to visit family in a conservative state in 1994, surprised to see flight attendants, baggage handlers, bartenders, grocery-store cashiers, and even one cab driver wearing little red ribbons on their chests. I didn’t yet grasp why they were important. Grief had traumatized me. Important activism had focused me. I didn’t look up to see the bigger picture: Americans everywhere were wearing their consciences over their hearts. People who had been members of silent majorities were speaking up in daily public solidarity. Maybe they didn’t know much about HIV/AIDS. Maybe they would never do more than say, “We wear the red ribbon to call for greater love and more action.” But by making that silent daily statement, they normalized support, caring, and hope. They said no to hate and fear.
A wonderful history and a contemporary call to action from my buddy James Finn. Until very recently, I have been cynical about symbolic, sometimes "performative" gestures like these. Like a younger James, I was cynical because I'd seen so many people profess to carry certain values but then not live up to them. That's changing for me now.

MOODBOARD
Tumblr media
CHARACTERISTICS: Ambitious, creative, friendly, kind, competitive, chatty, self-assured, mildly vain, dreamy, determined, protective, musical, desperately tries to be elegant and refined, somehow both extremely confident and not confident at all
LIKES: Performing, living in the city, wearing costumes, spending time with Ray and her daughters, babies, chocolate, Mandy Patinkin, Disney movies, Halloween, spooky stories
DISLIKES: The Spenglers (from 1993-2021), losing, Daisy Eagan (for "stealing" the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical in 1991), altos, camping
WEAPON OF CHOICE:
Her rep book
Her makeup collection
Her wardrobe
Her impressive mezzo/soprano mix belting voice
Her dancing skills
OTHER PERSONAL INFO:
During summers in her last two years of high school, she performed for tourists in Branson, Missouri, living with her Aunt Gracie.
She met Cathleen Spengler when they were in an off-off Broadway production of Kiss Me, Kate; Cathleen was playing Katharine/Lilli Vanessi and Willow was playing Bianca/Lois Lane. The two struck up a friendship, and shortly after Cathleen gave birth to her second daughter Marie, she introduced Willow to her friend Ray Stantz. After a whirlwind courtship, the two tied the knot on Halloween 1990.
She was nominated for Best Featured Actress in a Musical at the Tony Awards in 1991 for her role as Sister Ruth in a musical adaptation of Black Narcissus, but lost to Daisy Eagan.
She would later win Best Leading Actress in 2001 for her role as Polly Kern in Red as the Curtain, a Drowsy Chaperone-style vaudeville satire mixed with the blood and guts of Chicago.
Both of her pregnancies were rough-- her pregnancy with Addison was especially uncomfortable and the labor/delivery was fraught with complications, while during her pregnancy with Natalie, she was still dealing with the emotional fallout of the Spenglers' perceived betrayal.
INSPIRATION: Glinda Upland (Wicked), Ivy Lynn (Smash), Elliot Reid (Scrubs), Effie Newsome (Murdoch Mysteries), Cathy Hiatt (The Last Five Years), Erika (Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper), Jenny Lind (The Greatest Showman/Barnum), Wendy Darling (The New Adventures of Peter and Wendy)

on october 31st, it started as a rumble: a low sound deep within the earth. the telephone poles and street signs began to sway. the ground shifted and opened up: a jagged split down the middle of main street, three feet wide and fifty feet long, revealing a black void beneath.
buildings cracked and crumbled. the huntsville bank lost a third of it's structure; the shelves in the library toppled and crashed into each other; pete's garage collapsed completely; the playground in the park slid to an angle.
the earthquake destroyed all the booths and stalls for the festival. a fire broke out in one of the haunted houses. a pipe burst, spraying the street with water. destruction and devastation reigned down upon main street.
it lasted a total of five minutes before the ground and dust settled and people were able to take stock of what just happened. Mayor Natasha rounded up the police and fire departments, sending them on a search and rescue to ensure everyone was recovered in some form or another and to put out the fires and check that every door with a protection rune remained intact.
shock and horror gained traction over the course of the next several hours, as reports came in. three individuals were killed and dozens were injured. Sunflower Parsons was declared missing, as her body was not recovered and no one could remember where they saw her last.
the list of deaths were posted the next morning: Minnie Garcia, Sammie Thompson, and Zoë Clark.
(below the cut are the people who were injured in alphabetical order. the muns can determine how severe the injuries are, up to and including loss of limb/disability. due to the nature of the disaster, those not listed can still have minor cuts and bruises. the event concludes on nov 11th, at which time no new event threads may be posted and we catch up to the ooc present. you will still be allowed to continue event threads until completion.)

okay bestie did you watch the daisy jones and the six show on prime video? and i’m abt to day a spoiler so if you haven’t then don’t look but did you like how camilla cheated on billy with eddie? it wasn’t in the book but i thought it was a cool addition bc it kinda showed camilla sticking up for herself and giving billy a taste of his own medicine.
i am like the biggest djats fan so YES you know i did!! i liked it too but while i know a lot of people see it as a big change from the book i definitely don’t!! i get that having her cheat with eddie is more drama but people tend to forget that it is HEAVILY implied by the book that camilla cheated on billy with gary eagan, her first love. billy says she told him that she was meeting gary for lunch, but then was gone for much longer. billy claimed he suspected more happened because “no one eats lunch for four hours” but that it didn’t bother him because of the trust and love they had in their relationship. he trusted that she was doing what she needed for herself but would come back to him, the same way it never intensely concerned camila that billy had feelings for daisy (only that her addiction was dangerous)
it’s actually probably my least favorite change in the show that they drastically changed the billy/camilla relationship and put so much nonexistent anger into it, removing all the respect and devotion they had towards each other. it’s very very complicated to parse through and i am very tired right now but it lowkey makes my blood boil! 😋 because i have such normal feelings about these people who are not even real
also sorry, this got so off topic. i totally agree camilla ended billy in that scene and looked hot as fuck while she did it (also billy’s angry chopstick tapping is ICONIC)

Got tagged but @toooldforthisbutstill - thanks!
Rule : shuffle your playlist. list the first 10 songs then tag 10 people
I have a bunch of micro-themed playlists, not sure how much that counts, but I have a ridiculous amount of songs I’ve liked on Spotify over the course of… probably almost a decade. So:
The Legend of Ashitaka (daigoro789 piano/flute duet version)
2. Where My Heart Will Take Me (City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra)… good lord, that’s an old one
…then there’s Get Me To The Church On Time which I never in hell actively liked but I guess I did like Hey Mr Producer so the wretched app thinks I liked everything in it. So, skipping that!
3. Mother of the Sea (daigoro789 piano duet version)
4. Come Spirit, Come Charm (Original Broadway cast album)
5. A Lost Child (daigoro789 piano duet version)… wasn’t this meant to be random?
6. Music Box (Philip Glass, apparently) - I have no idea what this is except spooky, this is an excellent choice this late in the day
7. Riders of Fury (Veigar Margeirsson) - aaaah, we’re in my epic trailer music phase now
8. Flight over Venice 2 (Jesper Kyd) - the music has no right to be so good for That One Level
9. The Master‘s Theme (Dudley Simpson) - I can’t remember actively liking that one either but it’s getting late
10. Recercada No. 1 (Ensemble Galilei) - I want to put this on one of my super narrowly themed playlists now
Tagging, hm… @itscatconny @thattalviel @awordwasthebeginning @black-cat-aoife @tatzelwyrm @stephantom @secretmellowblog @kat-tail @ackerschnacker @mishidraws

Come Spirit, Come Charm.
"Mom, have you seen the locket?" she shouted.
"Are you sure it's not in your drawer?" her mom calmly replied from the living room.
Salomé was rummaging through her old drawer, trying to find her precious locket. Her mom's to be exact, passed down to her. While Sallie was rummaging through her old belongings, she stumbled upon an old diary, her faithful companion from years past. As she flipped through the pages, she came across a passage that filled her with nostalgia and warmth.
It was the entry about her first audition for a play, the day she tried out for the role of Mary Lennox in "The Secret Garden." Sallie remembered the excitement that bubbled within her, fuelled by the encouragement of her mentor and the love she had for the story. It was not just any tale, it was a cherished part of her Dad-Daughter Movie nights with her dad, a story that resonated deeply with her.
In the days leading up to the audition, Sallie poured herself into practicing her lines and songs, determined to do justice to Mary's character. The nerves were ever present, whispering doubts and fears in her mind. "What if I forgot the lines? What if I falter?" But her mom's words of encouragement echoed in her ears, soothing the nerves and bolstering her confidence.
"So have you found it, love?" her mother voice chimed melodically through her room.
"I found this instead. 12 years old Sallie’s dearest diary." Sallie replied while still flipping through the worn out pages.
As Sallie read those words from the past, she couldn't help but smile. If she could write a letter to her 12-year-old self, it would say, "It will be alright, kiddo. Keep on going with your silly dream. You will make it."
It's a memory Sallie will always cherish.

I'm calling the police.
What? Why?
Look at you. You have no self-control, eating right from the bin.
It was one almond.
I am sick and fucking tired of everyone acting like unrefined sugar isn't sugar. It's the exact same fucking thing.
You a writer?
Uh, sort of. I'm trying to be. Ow!
Good.
What?
If it hurts, you'll always remember.
