everything was sort of a wake-up call for mason mount and he was now questioning every of his decision he'd made, he makes, and he'll make.

as soon as elena stepped an inch outside of his property, mason didn’t think twice to slam the door shut and ran back inside to serena’s aide.

while she was well known for being dubbed calm beauty—in line with her majestic name inspired by the word serene—mason had never wanted someone to be boisterous it could hurt his ears. anything, really, other than the sight of serena, helplessly so, curled over to a foetal position in order to protect their baby.

their baby.

ironic how it was a life they created together yet serena was the only one protecting them and mason was the one who, despite the indirectness, had a hand in this entire ordeal. if it wasn’t because of mason, serena wouldn’t be lying on the floor, holding her bulging stomach whilst hiding her held-back grunts behind her gritted teeth.

this whole situation with his little family wasn’t the most ideal scenario but mason was anything but a murderer. his parents raised him better than that and yet, mason could easily have bloods in his hands just now.

mason could taste bile on the tip of his tongue, so bitter at the reality that—no matter however put—mason was the one who put two lives in danger tonight. fucking hell, mason didn’t even know the gender of his own flesh and blood yet.

“serena,” mason kneeled beside serena, trying to lift her up from the floor so he could get her some help in the speed of light. “serena, talk to me. how do you feel?”

mason’s question was only met by another pained grunt, followed by an erratic breathing pattern. he could sense serena was trying to control her breaths in between her cry for help.

“i need you to hang in there, okay?” mason had never been so lucky he was a footballer, accustomed by now to carry weights while running on a daily training basis, as he was reaching the door of his Lamborghini with her in his arms. “on scale 1 to 10, where are you?”

but as soon as the Chelsea star placed her down the passenger seat, serena cried out an eerily screeching shriek while her hands gripped the back of his neck on a death lock. mason’s ears were ringing in alert, his eyes looked everywhere for anything that could’ve possibly caused worse pain for serena.

as he looked down, he realised it could be anything because blood was already smeared everywhere—the leather seat, the dashboard, the sideboard, the floor of his car, the concrete floor of his garage… leading all the way back up to the house.

it was red all over and he’d never feared for having painted the town red.

“god, please,” serena wailed, tears running down her eyes now/ “please, make them stop.”

“I need you to hang in there, you got me?” mason’s hands were as fast as his feet on the pitch now, buckling her up while trying to soothe the back of her hand, the one cradling the protruding belly, in hope to reduce her stress. “you’ve been doing great so far, serena…”

the last line was honestly the red thread serena tried to hang her last bits of sanity left. because mason was right—she’d been doing well so far, despite all odds, and if she failed now, she’d only fail her only friend in this lifetime; her own baby. she had to make it.

serena’s deathly grip on mason’s free hand—as the other was holding the steering wheel—was the only thing that kicked off mason’s feet to push the pedal till the speedometer showed he’d breached the speeding limit. fuck repercussions, this was life and death.

the crispy screeching sound from his wild driving—drifting would be a better word choice, now that he’d thought about it—surprised the on-call doctors and hospital staffs. some immediately threw away their coffee and reached mason’s aide before he even called for help, and he was grateful for that because serena’s wailing certainly messed up his logical thinking at this point.

“what happened, sir?”

“she—”

mason didn’t know where to start in all honesty. and it was funny, the confusion, because he wanted to tell everything so serena could get the best treatment possible but mason’s mouth couldn’t seem to summon the words. why was that?

was it because he was afraid of people’s judgement towards her? towards them? towards their so-called arrangement? was it because he didn’t want people to know what he’d done to her? was it because he was ashamed that he was ultimately the source of her on-going pain? was it because he was afraid people would jail him for becoming a monster he’d never intended himself to be?

there’s also murderer who never intends to kill their victim in the first place, his father used to say whenever he gave lame excuses for not meaning things he said.

mason wanted to throw up. he truly had bloods in his hands. literally and figuratively.

how could he possibly be a father in this state?

“mr. mount,” someone tapped him by the shoulder, and only then did he realise they’d rolled away serena to another room. “I need you to tell me what happened to your wife.”

his wife. his fully, legally-wedded wife.

good god, he needed to puke.

“mr. mount,”

hours later, a nurse finally came by to reach him, who’d been sitting and staring at the white walls lifelessly for the past hour, waiting for any news from anyone that had taken serena into their custody and care. now that he was called, mason stood up immediately, the pathetic excuse of plastic chair squeaked at the sudden movement.

“how’s my wife?”

for someone who proudly claimed he doesn’t have a wife and only a mother to his child—to ben chilwell’s face, no less—mason’s tongue rolled the word perfectly. like it wasn’t his first time calling serena his wife in public. like he didn’t even have to practice them. like it was natural for him. like it was supposed to be.

“they’re waking her up right now, and the baby’s doing fine,” the nurse smiled and mason let out a bated breath he didn’t know he was holding. “you can see her in 15 minutes.”

but mason didn’t want 15 minutes. mason wanted to be the first person to see it himself that serena was okay, that their baby was okay, that they both were okay, and that he didn’t hurt either of them.

the forward player let out a relieved sigh when he reached the assigned room for serena, his eyes zeroed on the sight of the mother lying peacefully now. gone was the agony from her face, despite the whiteness casted all over the pretty face, and mason had never been more in peace than knowing that their baby was also doing okay.

at least for now.

the nurse checked up on them every now and then, making sure the IV drip was working fine, her overall condition was okay. some even reminded mason that he could leave briefly to grab the both of them some garbs, an older nurse even went as far as scolding him to wash up and change his bloody pyjama top.

but how could he leave serena behind when he knew his crazy girlfriend could come in and assault serena once more behind his back?

right, elena. the big, fat elephant in the room. what to do with her?

in all honesty, mason was still in disbelief. he wanted to say elena was lying—possessed even—but he’d seen it with his own eyes. he truly had a hard time digesting the reality where elena—his sweet elena, unable to kill even a spider—was capable of hurting someone. a pregnant lady, moreover, until she bleed her life out. for him, nothing made sense regarding this whole situation.

or was that elena’s true self, one that mason didn’t know of?

“mason,” serena groaned, breaking his train of thoughts. her throat must’ve been very sore. “water.”

without further ado, mason immediately ran for a glass of water outside, as well as informing a nurse—the entire nurse station was perhaps a better fitted word—and anyone who knew their real arrangement would’ve been surprised to see how responsive mason was to every of serena’s whim that day. a fake husband shouldn’t demand fiercely for someone to attend his fake wife as soon as possible on a lazy Sunday morning.

“do you need anything else?” mason asked when he got back from fetching his delivery order, despite the nurses’ adamant complaint towards the fact he kept providing serena the patient with things she wasn’t suppose to be having yet. “a pillow or anything?”

“no, I’ve had enough,” serena smiled meekly. “thank you, mason.”

mason could feel his lips tugging upwards by a bit. “you’re wel—”

“didn’t I tell you,” mason and serena looked up to the dramatic door opening, only to find her personal doctor barging in, obviously pissed at the situation at hand. despite not glancing the married couple a glance, the doctor’s expression said it all. “that the next time you’re assaulted again I’m going to hunt your husband down?”

mason’s chest fell heavier than the biggest rock found on earth as soon as his brain could register the next time and assaulted again in the same sentence.

“oh there he is,” the doctor exclaimed, rather sarcastic this time around, as she looked up from the clipboard she was holding. “looks like I don’t need hunting after all.”

in another circumstances, mason would probably have a clap back to the doctor’s jab. but he didn’t have it in him, not today, not after learning too much all at once. he didn’t even think he had the right space of mind to even nod at whatever the doctor was saying, everything just went off before his eyes like a shinkansen train.

“I need you to be honest with me, serena,” mason didn’t waste another breath after the doctor—finally—walked away from the pristine white room. “the doctor said next time. when was the first time?”

serena’s breath was caught in her throat. she didn’t think mason would pay attention to such detail, for he was looking at distance during the whole time the doctor was berating her.

“serena, I need you to answer me.”

serena had been in countless intense court and constitutional hearings full of intimidating men greedy for more power and they’d never been able to tackle her face first—thus her given dib of calm beauty—but this… the way eternal fire was blazing in mason’s eyes, full of determination, hatred, vengeance all at once. it was certainly something she’d never wish to be on the receiving end.

mason turned her into a coward desperate in need of hiding. the papers back in her country would have a field day if they found out about this.

“serena,” mason clicked his tongue, obviously annoyed at her silence. “I’m not in a very patient mood.”

angry and bothered mason was certainly not a sight and side serena would want to see of him again. “remember the one week you thought I went missing?”

mason’s breath immediately got stuck on the airway.

it didn’t take a genius to figure out the main takeaway for her answer, and mason had never felt more useless and more similar to a piece of shit at that moment. how could he not, when he remembered precisely he once harboured an ill thought that serena wasn’t taking their arrangement seriously when she was the mastermind behind the plan?

but right now wasn’t the perfect time to dwell on his misjudgement. as much as serena’s words invoked a churning feeling inside of him, mason needed to know everything. “what did she do to you?”

serena was visibly gripping the blanket beneath her palms, playing with the fabric, while her lips were pursed in deep thought. oh, how much penny mason would pay for her thoughts in this moment… did she hate talking about this? if she did, which part of the incident did she particularly hate? or did she just want to forget about his? worse, was she contemplating not to tell him at all like the first time it happened?

“she always comes at wee hours, drunk and asking for you,” always? mason could feel his brows curling in confusion. “she always comes on times whenever you’re staying over the night and she always asks for you. I never let her in because you’re obviously sleeping so she gets physical about it.”

elena always comes whenever I left her for his own home? mason had to remind himself to breathe, gathering himself because there was no way he could continue this conversation without cooling his hand but that was the last thing he’d want to impose serena, especially not in her current recovering state.

“always?”

he needed her to confirm his hearing didn’t fail him, and serena averting his gaze was the most important answer mason needed.

if mason was living in an animated world, his head would’ve been drawn with blowing smoke coming out of his crown and ears, as he drove down a familiar lane he wouldn’t wish to visit again.

the smoke was blowing harder and darker as his feet grazed down the asphalt towards the house he only stepped in a day ago—how time changes everything was real in every sense of the word. and everything serena had recounted back at the hospital didn’t help his mood at all. in fact, the more he recalled what she said, the more he gained the courage to burn the house if he could.

why and how could he even muster up that vile of intention, he didn't know. but he didn't want to know now, that would be a question for another day.

“serena, why don’t you talk to me about this?” mason whispered when serena had done elaborating each and every sequence of her hidden pain, partly in disbelief she’d been enduring such mistreatment for far too long, partly in outmost proud because she’d manage to recall each and every incident and willing to share them with him. his hands were untangling hers, one by one, releasing the gnawing grip she held over the frail blanket. in his defence, he was finding a distraction from the burning wrath boiling inside of him, slowly but surely, targeting at one particular person he didn’t want to see now but realised he needed to face. “why are you doing all these?” the footballer continued, gently—unlike his true nature inside of him. “you could’ve told me.” “it does not matter—” “it does to me,” serena had to hold back an audible gasp when she saw the raw emotions mason was displaying through the clear, brown orbs. “I want to know why you’d do such thing, endangering our baby.” while mason certainly didn’t want to be held accountable for another flash of pain in serena’s eyes, even for a split second, he needed to say the words. he needed to know her ulterior motive for doing such thing—a bit peculiar to see a princess, all in her glory and power, choosing to glower under pressure for a mere peasant, no? mason could practically see the gears shifting in her brain, probably contemplating to choose to reveal the truth or to spike another lie. “because one of us deserves a happy ending and by the looks of it, it’s never going to be me.”

replaying that particular scene fuelled his anger more. that was apparent by the way he knocked on the door like a police trying to catch a criminal red-handed—ironic enough for mason to laugh inwardly.

“mason!” surprise and elation were two emotions were clearly painted on his mistress’ face as she opened the door. “I didn’t expect—”

but mason had only one thing in his mind and it aligned with his initial intention. “don’t ever come near my wife and my child again, you got me?”

gone was the happiness in elena’s face, washed away and was now replaced by huge devastation. mason had never seen someone sporting that particular emotion so clearly. “but mase—”

“you got me?”

elena didn’t say anything and mason doubted she’d give any response any time soon—probably hoping to stall mason longer around her—so he decided to take matters to his own hands.

“don’t ever come near my family again or I’ll see you at court.”

“serena,” mason remembered thinking her last comment was so ridiculous that he had to grasp her by the shoulders, before grazing her now slightly bulging belly when she’d stayed in place. “you’re the most useful person in this household.”

PARASOL

CHAPTER ONE: Peculiar Parcel!

when a peculiarly shaped package arrives on Scrooge's desk, he takes some time to reminisce about the day he arrived in Louisville to find that dinky steamboat on the Mississippi river and the ducks that took him in. Albeit one seemingly reluctantly...

hello - I'm very much in love with 2k17 ducktales as well as the older versions! I wanted to try and merge some of the complete life and times of scrooge mcduck by Don Rosa with 2k17 ducktales because for some reason I adore ducks that also happen to be sailors.

There is a major spoiler warning for 2k17 ducktales season 3 finale, though it came out a few years ago I wanted to add this just to be sure you're aware. This is cross published on Quotev -- I also apologize for any inaccuracies, I really hope you enjoy this silly little story! :-)

CHAPTER ONE: Peculiar Parcel!

A PARCEL HAD FOUND ITS WAY TO SCROOGE'S DESK THAT MORNING. It was long with odd bulges along its surface and seemingly insignificant. It sat, and sat, and sat.....then sat some more.

In fact, the sun was already setting slowly in the foreground behind wide windows by the time Scrooge had actually taken a look at it.

It had been a busy day full of mundane meetings and even more soul-wrenching interviews for a new Board of Director as his old one turned out to be evil.

Figures, with a name like Bradford it was only a matter of time before something mildly evil became of him.

The children were lively as ever, an occasional scream and the sound of something thumping on the ground could be heard outside his office. Shenanigans afoot.

Della's voice seemed to carry throughout the whole manor, and it was assumed that she was an avid player of whatever game the children were participating in as the duck's battle cries rang across the air with promises of multiple darts to whichever body part was exposed if she caught them.

Scrooge had passed Donald in one of the numerous sitting rooms before he had retreated to his study, sharing a few exchanges of words and his one daily comment about his nephews free-loader status.

By the sounds of furious quacking it seems like the rambunctious group had roped the sailor into their chaos.

Scrooge chuckled into his work, cringing ever so often at the sounds of crashing followed by 'oops!' every time, without fail. Usually he would go out there and wave his cane around like a true old man telling dastardly kids to get off his lawn, threatening them that they would be the ones paying for everything with a crack.

But that afternoon paperwork demanded the McDuck's full attention, he couldn't go on any longer without a Board of Director. Mostly because he had taken up the duty himself and he was very much over it. Just because he was willing and able to put in the hard work, doesn't mean he enjoyed it.

The Scottish duck could only hope with all his heart that Beakly or Duckworth would step in and tell his family to STOP BREAKING EVERYTHING.

Trying to push all that, as well as the nagging thought of how much the damages were going to cost, to the back of his head Scrooge hummed a small tune that sounded vaguely familiar.

But he couldn't put a finger on what exactly while he began to hunker down and start reading through words printed in a font size that shouldn't be legal to use.

Something about racecars...lasers...airplanes maybe? It was all a blur, really.

Sifting through the sea of papers, his hand eventually hit the previously mentioned package after a quite violent display of signing a document for the hundredth time. The hand that held a golden ball tipped pen tightly froze midair, a couple inches from the table while Scrooge blinked out of work mode tiredly.

Glancing at the clock that hung just above the study doors it was no wonder why the brutal festivities had died down, leaving the manor deadly silent. It was almost two in the morning.

Had time really passed so quickly? Bah, of course paper work would keep him beyond the hours he could be sleeping.

Tugging the signature black top hat that had suctioned its place on his head from extensive use off his skull, Scrooge flipped it over and placed it beside him on the table before returning all attention towards the brown package that now sat before him.

A hint of confusion mixed with a healthy dose of suspicion took over the duck, after all the richest duck in the world has many enemies and those enemies try all sorts of tricks and schemes. Perhaps it was Flinty sending him some sort of deformed bomb just to inconvenience the McDuck.

Not that it would be the first time. Probably not the last.

Poking the hazard with his pen, the Scottish duck was able to determine it passed the first test of not exploding immediately.

Closing his eyes with a tired sigh, Scrooge almost left the mysterious item alone for a problem to deal with in the morning....well it's already morning. Fine, that afternoon.

That of course, was the original plan before his eyes caught hold of the particular handwriting scribbled on it's rough surface. It was small, almost as small as that blasted font on the multiple resumes he just read.

Slightly shaky, but with beautiful penmanship nonetheless and a unique lettering for the first initial of his name that only one person had ever done for him.

Despite the excitement (one that he would never tell anyone about) that bubbled up through his webbed feet and to his hands, Scrooge jabbed the package one more time in cautious habit before nodding to himself with a confident smile that this was for sure not a bomb.

Sitting back in the chair he had stood from in order to glare at the now-safe package properly, Scrooge sat with his back straight and hands folded in front of him in an attempt to regain a dignified appearance despite no one else being in the room.

It didn't matter anyway, as the next moment consisted of the McDuck leaping forward in his chair and ripping open the wrapped item like a duckling on Christmas morning.

Shredded bits of packaging laid about the table and floor, the now uncovered item placed delicately over a thrashed background of brown and torn paper with paper work thrown about.

A fond smile found its way to Scrooge's bill, running a feathered hand over the top with a ghost of distance between it and his hand.

"Well...Bless me bagpipes."

Scrooge laughed quietly, brushing off some loose dust and strands of fabric that no longer clung to it's original place. The quiet moment felt slow, and moonlight poured in around him like a thin blanket. Specks of dust seemed to shine in the light like diamonds, while the item before him looked like it almost glowed like magic under the light.

The item in question was a vintage parasol -- a white base with beautiful blue lace work over it. Lace that use to be pure white hung along the edges for a couple inches, now a tiny bit darker in coloring due to its age.

Something that Scrooge himself wouldn't have paid more then a few seconds attention to back then, and probably wouldn't now if the duck hadn't happened to know the history behind this specific sun blocker.

A small part of Scrooge couldn't believe that the thing was sitting on his desk right now, he thought it was long forgotten or turned to dust by mere age.

A bigger part of him use to stew in disbelief that his uncle hadn't included the parasol in the inheritance, but he had gotten that years and years ago so this showing up now clued him into the bigger mystery that he was pinning down in his head.

Eyeing the umbrella with a scrutinizing gaze that only an old miser could perfect, Scrooge took mental notes about any rips or snagged lace admonishing the top layers of the parasol with an intention to get it fixed as soon as possible.

During his search of fixable imperfections Scrooge came across a small note on some stiff stock paper that was stuck in one of the folds of the parasol, and the McDuck's interest peaked immediately.

Plucking it from its place, Scrooge took a few moments to adjust his small spectacles that sat snug on his beak and began to scan the card.

'Dear McBrat,

Wasn't sure where to send this to where it would reach you personally. Your mailing system is ridiculous and I want to send a formal complaint but your HR is just as, if not more, preposterous. I'm sure this is by design, but jeez kid it's like you expect bombs in the mail. Ha!

Your aunt wanted this sent to you with Pothole's things, but it got lost due to some sort of events that I couldn't relay to you because I have no idea how it ended up in the Forgotten Brewery Caves. I knew it was hers because of the stitching, I'd recognize that nuisance of a last name anywhere. I'm only sending this because I unfortunately owed one last thing to your uncle.

If you're ever down in Kentucky, come finish that race that old Pothole was too cowardly to finish. You'll win me that Southern mansion.

The idea that Porker was even still alive shocked Scrooge almost more then anything else described in that letter. He had already finished the race anyway, with the guys nephew.

What's with the information about the parasol being found in the Forgotten Brewery Caves anyway? That was one of the few caves located along the Mississippi, and even then most of it is blocked off.

How was it even lost in the first place, and now that he really thought about it how was it that Porker had found the parasol without packaging as stated in his letter but Scrooge received it in a package with his aunts handwriting?

Immortality for the first problem...maybe time paradox for the second...? Rubbing the bridge of his beak, Scrooge groaned into the open air and let out a deep sigh knowing he would end up checking whatever was happening down there one way or another.

If one thing as important as this was lost, imagine the other heirlooms that could be scattered in some other cave without his knowledge. The idea sent chills down Scrooge's spine.

An almost silent sound of the door being pushed open brought Scrooge out of his deep contemplation, eyes snapping towards the entrance that was now cracked open.

One of the many ducklings that resided in the mansion poked her head through the doorway, curious eyes glinting in the dark while she looked around the room before landing on the older duck.

"Dad...?"

Scrooge straightened at the title, if the McDuck claimed he was use to being called a 'dad' he would be absolutely lying through his teeth.

He didn't detest it, obviously. The duck was more then overjoyed to learn that the duckling in front of him named Webbigail was of his own flesh and blood, but that didn't make the title any more normal to him.

He'd gone through life without any real thought put towards having kids of his own, he never settled down quite enough for that and by the time it was even a feasible idea, he had all his other free time taken over by nephews and nieces and other family members.

"What're yew doing out of bed, Webby?"

Scrooge pushed on through his slight dilemma of the title that was bestowed upon him only a couple months ago.

"I was just thirsty, but now I'm thirsty for whatever you've got on your desk!"

Webby gasped, having noticed the blue umbrella that her dad placed a hand over. Scrooge smiled in response, lifting the laced parasol with both hands under it, making sure it was secure before shuffling over to Webby who bounced around on her feet.

It was an ongoing mystery to how she had any amount of energy this early in the morning, and Scrooge was sure he'd never truly find out.

"Now...careful dear, this is my Aunt (Y/n)'s beloved parasol. Technically I own it, she never did pay me back."

Scrooge mused, the last bit of the sentence hushed under his breath while he counted up the combined interest of what he should of been paid by now. Not that he ever forgot, every year he counted up what his aunt and others owed him. Like his uncle Jake who owes $8362 of accumulated interest.

"Aunt (Y/n)," Webby repeated quickly, excitedly looking over the parasol "Pothole McDuck's wife! Originally daughter of Blackheart Beagle, but after she married she took the McDuck name! She saved you and Angus during a steamboat race against Blackheart and the Beagles."

"Aye, she did. She jumped into the muddy Mississippi just for me dime too."

Scrooge added onto the list of facts that Webby was enthusiastically reciting from memory. Letting his shoulders relax as the duckling with messy white hair took the parasol from his hands and held it delicately in her own.

Reaching into his coat Scrooge pulled out the familiar dime that hung around his neck 24/7 while talking about the experience.

"Thought she might not come back up after she went headfirst in," Scrooge murmured, the vague feeling of terrified desperation that his younger self had been frozen in was crawling up his neck as he turned the dime over in his feathered hands.

It's face was a bit rough but that would be expected for how long Scrooge has kept it. The fact that it was still shiny and readable was a miracle.

Holding it in front of him the older duck briefly thought over just how much panic he went through when the dime had rolled off the edge of the boat all those years ago.

"Both my uncle Pothole and I couldn't believe it, but she managed to grab it in time and then single handedly stopped 'em from throwing us over!"

"Wow, she sounds so cool! I've been wanting to learn more about aunt (Y/n) and uncle Pothole - I mean I know they lived in Louisville for awhile and Pothole sold his steamboat to you but I couldn't find anything about the actual race itself-- ...."

Webby trailed off, noticing the cane wielding duck was only half-heartedly listening.

Gazing at the shiny silver coin, Scrooge let a fond expression take over his features before moving the dime out of view to focus on his daughters face again, noticing her abrupt silence.

She was watching him closely, hugging the parasol closer in an upright position and probably wondering where Scrooge had just gone to in his memories.

A hopeful grin tugged at the corners of Webby's beak, having recognized the mood that her father was in. A story telling one.

She quickly grabbed his hand, rushing them both back to Scrooge's desk without any warning. Webby always knew when the billionaire was stuck in reminiscing something that had happened years and years ago in his oh-so daring life, a telltale sign being when Scrooge had his eyes glued to his number one dime.

A piercing but glazed over gaze, when ranges of emotion from sadness and happiness and everything in between suddenly became very apparent on his face.

"Tell me everything," Webby all but squealed, a dash of wonder sprinkled her eyes and wide smile.

Almost shoving her father back into his large lounge chair, Webby plopped the parasol down before scrambling after it onto the desk. Completely oblivious to the previously important paperwork that was now rather unimportantly laying on the ground.

Chuckling nervously at just how much joy seeped through Webby's small body at potential McDuck information, Scrooge took a few moments to get comfortable in his chair.

It was moments like these that the small girl loved, moments that were few and far between where she would spot Scrooge staring ahead (usually at his dime,) but in his head he was far away. She would practically corner her dad and lovingly ask (force) him to tell her about whatever memory he was thinking about.

Moments when it was just her and Scrooge.

"Well, what do ye want to know, lassie?" Scrooge asked slowly, stuffing the precious dime down his red coat.

Placing his cane on the ground so it leaned on the chair, the McDuck reached out over the edge of the desk and grabbed Webby by the armpits and dangled her in the air like a wet cat for a few moments before placing her on his knee with an expectant stare.

"Everything! Tell me everything -- oh oh! How'd you meet them? Were they nice-? How about every single detail about the race, how did you guys find the treasure in such muddy water-?! Uhm- also what about the parasol? How'd aunt (Y/n) get it -- what was she like? Why did she jump into perilous waters for your dime? Was uncle Pothole really a writer? Is he as stingy as other McDucks? How did he know the location of the Drennan Whyte? Did he really sell his steam boat to you at a cheap price?!"

Webby rambled on, intense hand motions flaring everywhere while squirming in Scrooge's lap.

"Well-!"

"And who's Porker Hogg?!"

Scrooge stared down at the duckling bewildered, not because he was cut off nor was it from all the overwhelming questions. He was far use to that, it was mostly because she mentioned Hogg. He wasn't aware Webby even knew vaguely the name, let alone the guy.

The white feathered duckling in his lap craned her neck slightly to look up at him, blinking a couple times before pointing behind her at the somewhat crumpled letter Scrooge found in the parasol that sure enough had Hogg's dastardly name signed at the bottom.

Forming his beak into a slight 'o' shape, the older duck nodded in understanding.

Clearing his throat after a couple seconds had passed by of more winded questions, Webby stopped short and excitedly began to shake about a bit in her seated position.

She looked like she was going to burst at the seams with more questions if Scrooge didn't start talking now. So he did, placing a comforting hand behind his daughters shoulder as a support while she leaned into his side.

Scrooge let her settle down a little more before he used his other arm to spread out as far as it would go, pointing to a slightly large round oak picture frame that held the image of two white feathered ducks on the wall, just to the left of his parents grand photo.

One duck, the taller and gruffer looking one, had a scruffy white beard under his beak with eyes that looked permanently grumpy, much like his fathers stern face in the aforementioned picture next to this one.

A long wooden tobacco pipe was held between his beak, and a sailor outfit adorned his body. A bright blue sailor's captain hat sat perfectly on his head, tuffs of short feathered hair poked out slightly.

The boatman had an arm in a bent position, having offered it to the other duck in the photo who had her dainty arms wrapped tenderly around his. She had a large giddy smile and kind eyes, long lashes curled a bit above them.

Her hair was short and a little wild, and she wore a short sleeved blue collared dress that was buttoned up on the right. A blue lace parasol was held tight in her hand, casting a shadow above her in protection from the sun that beat down that day.

Both ducks were facing a little tilted from the camera in a candid sort of way as if just having noticed the camera during a normal walk, and despite the gloomy attitude of the sailor, Scrooge knew he absolutely adored the woman next to him more then anyone else.

His uncle Pothole was happiest with (Y/n)…and maybe a little money here and there that he horded. Mainly aunt (Y/n).

Webby followed Scrooge's hand all the way to the photo, beaming as she noticed who it depicted.

"Let's start with meeting my uncle Pothole and aunt (Y/n), eh?" Scrooge began, restating their names as if introducing characters in a book.

A playful tone went along with his words and he leaned forwards slightly again to fondly touch the parasol one last time before diving into retelling the long and daring adventure of childhood memories.

Tilting backwards, the old miser thought for a bit before opening his mouth. Webby sat impatiently by his side, fidgeting with her hands as she anxiously waited.

"It all started when I got a job as a cabin boy on a cattle ship from Glasgow, heading to New Orleans."

Scrooge spoke, and with each word Webby saw her father become more and more sucked into the past. Starting to truly relive past events, and the white feathered duck swore he could smell the ocean salt that wafted in the wind while he stood on the deck of the boat.

He was suddenly there, transported to the stylish streets of New Orleans and feeling the murky river water of the Mississippi that he travelled up. Hearing the constant chatter and buzz of enthusiasm upon reaching the dock in Louisville, Kentucky.

He made sure to tell Webby just how marvelous the gala he had docked on was, how the air tasted of fortunes being made. How exciting the view of this bustling town meant to him.

Scrooge chuckled, recalling his wonderment for the whole event that never really did stop phasing him. Glancing down, the duckling that was stuck between his side and the firm armrest could bearly contain her excitement any longer, and Scrooge knew he should probably get on with the tale.

"Quite a sight for a penniless lad from Glasgow, but I still needed to find my uncle."

Things are very, very grim for me right now.

I'm hanging by a thread tied to a long-distance hope of finding a lawyer willing to take my case, and that I'll get hired at the place I interviewed at yesterday.

It's grim, because I've slipped so far behind in everything, all I can afford now is ramen. I eat free food from the restaurant (my job that I'm trying to leave due to them screwing me over so hard I'm IN this situation.)

Things in jeopardy/things I can no longer pay for:

Rent

Car insurance.

2 credit cards.

Traffic ticket that I'm fighting, because the reason is disgustingly stupid - everyone in Los Angeles does what I got pulled over for on the daily. Multiple times. They enter the left hand turn lane before the turn lane starts. I was off my medication at the time (again, problem getting it). This is what the "ADHD Tax" means, and why life with ADHD is more expensive.

Health insurance - which means no more mental health care. Which means no more prescriptions for ADHD medication and antidepressants.

ADHD meds. I've been off of them since the start of August. I either can't afford them, or they're not in stock. Even the generic version of Adderall is out.

Dental Insurance.

Spotify. I have to listen to ads now. An acceptable loss, however annoying.

Disney+ (to be honest, I dropped them before this due to them raising their prices.)

Filling my car's gas tank to Full. It costs me around $88. It lives perpetually on 1 - 2 gallons, so I'm having to keep putting in $10 every other day.

There goes getting a new mattress. I'll keep dealing with lower back pain and restless nights.

Paying the mechanic back for fixing my POS 20 year old car in June.

Paying my friend back $600, and my parents back $900 to help me cover rent in July.

My paychecks and what small tips I make anymore go directly toward the money pit that is rent that I can't afford anymore, food for myself and my cat, and gas for the car.

My biggest fears right now are not making my $1250 rent by Sept. 15th, not being able to pay that ticket (which you have to pay for and hope the court refunds it back after looking at the dispute paperwork), and not getting my ADHD meds. Without them, I've been making more mistakes, and being my old scattered self without any ability to focus on more than 1 thing, and not get important things done that need to be done.

TO SAVE MYSELF...

I am looking for other work.

I took a job every Saturday at my old work (which I didn't want to return to, but I'm desperate. There are REASONS why I left).

Selling my things on Ebay - which isn't going so well. I only sold 2 small things, made $40, but I only got $15 of it. The rest went to Ebay fees and shipping.

Entering writing contests with cash prizes. I haven't won anything.

Getting the odd lottery ticket praying to God for help. Haven't won anything. Not even my $2 back.

I sold my PS2 and some games for $50 and that $50 went to gas and food.

I got a Macy's card so I could get nice work pants for job interviews, and rebuild my credit back into the 700's. It's been driven down to 695, and I am not happy about that. I worked for years to get it back up out of the 400s. Now I owe Macy's $43 by the end of the month.

Now I'm considering donating plasma even if the last time I tried years ago...let's just say it didn't go well. I panicked, I almost blacked out, and I threw up. 3 nurses were around me.

Considering donating blood if they'll pay me for it.

Auditioning for audiobook narration jobs. Haven't landed any new gigs yet, and the one I'm working on is royalty share. Which = experience. No $$$.

I need $1250 by the 15th, and I don't know what else I can do to get it. Aside from starting an Only Fans for guys who like ugly women, cakes, or feet. I am seriously considering posting pictures of my ass and feet for money.

I'm a roller skater. I know I have nice legs and nice bakery. I just really, really, really don't want to have to sink that low. I already have horrible self esteem, body issues, and mental health issues.

I am physically alone through all of this. No partner, no significant other, no family nearby. It's just me having to fight through all of this to keep going alone.

AND ALL OF THIS.... Because my work retaliated against me in June, and continue to do so.

No one wants my voice. - a literal lifetime of training. No one wants my writing - same. Decades of training. Years devoted to a work that holds my soul ("Out There: The 1K"). My patreon failed horribly. No one wants my stuff. - Yes, it's all crap, because I can't afford expensive stuff. No one wants to hire me. - I haven't figured this one out yet. No law firm wants to help me. No one wants...

Me.

BUT I AM STILL TRYING.

I bought a bunch of potatoes today, and some spaghetti. My food for a while will be baked spuds and noodles. I'll get my protein through meat dishes at work.

My cat is amazing. :) She'll always have enough food and love. She's my emotional support companion. She's even registered. And she's saving me right now. All I need to do is look at her, and I can believe for a moment that things will be ok.

I'll get through this and keep a roof over our heads because of her. Because I love her. Because I'm terrified of living on the streets. Of being dropped like I never mattered despite how hard I work to be the best at my job, and a good person.

I know it'll be ok. I just have to follow the advice my MC was given:

"You're meant for something greater out there. Not down here with us in the dirt. But you have to look up. Keep your eyes on the horizon. Keep moving. Don't look back, and don't look down. You do that, and you'll find your way out. And when you do, I hope I'm there to see you break orbit."

That's Gregor's advice to a young Yune Darrak in my novel. Gregor was his first father figure. Yune holds that speech as part of what gets him through impossible times. He named his ship the Horizon after this speech, and in honor of Gregor, of how much he saved his life just by loving him.

I need to follow my own? advice.

I've been strong for months. But now, I really want to go sit in the shower and cry. Be right back.

He tossed the pizza into the open door and onto the front passenger seat. He sat hard in the front seat and looked around the street one more time, as certain as ever that he was in the right spot, but somehow his customer wasn't there.

Booker pulled out his notepad, reached for the car radio, and keyed in the correct personal frequency. He clicked down the send button. "M. DeVilious, M. DeVilious. Twenty-Two Minute Pizza." He waited a moment and was about to try again when the reply came through.

"Booker," came the instantly recognizable smooth voice. "Are you still on your way? I believe my pizza is now free."
