a little update on tencent's dashi spinoff show & the dark forest

dashi spinoff

in an event held on april 13th, director yang lei talked about the dashi spinoff (refer to the link for plot summary if you missed it). one major thing that fans can finally stop worrying about is that zhang luyi will play wang miao for sure. the concern was not unfounded because it's not that uncommon for cdramas to switch actors. and back when the spinoff was first announced last summer, yu hewei was the only actor confirmed officially. but i mean, what's even the point of the spinoff if they don't bring back the original shiwang?! nope, they have no other choice!

yang lei said the idea of the spinoff is to fill the gap between the first and second book. and that's roughly the time between 2007 to 2009. it will continue the realistic style of three-body with added scifi elements. he also said that the hibernation facility would be introduced in the spinoff. i don't know if there'd be the talk about hibernation between shi qiang and wang miao, but i know the two of them will deal with shi qiang's health issues, and it's not going to be easy.

lastly in the info sheet from january, the filming of the spinoff is set in september 2024, but yang lei said that they were not sure yet. it's likely that they'll start the shooting in 2025.

the dark forest

since i've seen people asking about the dark forest season in the tags, i just want to say that it's not going to happen soon. in an interview in february, yang lei said they were still working on the script, and in march, he said the shooting would likely happen in 2025.

given the new info on the spinoff show. ideally, if they shoot the spinoff in early 2025 and the dark forest in the rest of 2025, the spinoff might have a chance to air in 2026 since it only has 12 episodes. and it's definitely going to take much longer for the dark forest to air. but given how big the project is and how difficult the shooting will be, it's all worth the wait.

The Dark Forest by Cixin Liu

da shi’s son being a con artist tryna swindle money out of average folks who have no clue if their progeny will survive the alien invasion bc their family has little money and influence…… it’s the meditation on what it means to be in service of humanity versus taking advantage of it, it’s the irony of having the son of a respected officer in the invasion defense force be the villain in a poor man’s story, it’s the humanity and inhumanity coming out at the same time bc no one will look at invasion the same way bc of their life and their circumstances, so why WOULDN’T the son of a cop try and swindle poor people outta their money when said cop had to go through a whole character development arc to become a better man after initially being introduced as nothing more than a shitty cop

TO ALL THE SHIWANG FANS, I HAVE THE BESTEST BESTEST BESTEST NEWS IN THE ENTIRE WORLD. WE'LL HAVE 12 MORE EPISODES OF SHIWANG THROUGH THE DASHI SPINOFF!!!!!!!!!

I was literally shaking and internally screaming when I saw the news. I remember back in the summer when the Shi Qiang spinoff was announced, some fans were bummed that there's no mention of Wang Miao, and I always thought it'd be about Shi Qiang's cases from years ago. But last month (Dec 2023), they submitted the show info to the National Radio and Television Administration, and the summary 100% tells a story of Shi Qiang and Wang Miao:

Based on the info sheet, this show will have 12 episodes, and filming starts in September 2024 (so it'll probably air in 2025 the earliest). And this is the plot summary: After Project Guzheng, Shi Qiang (with leukemia from the radiation) works again with Wang Miao because some nanomaterial gets stolen. After some investigation, they find that it's not simply about the stolen material. An unknown organization is planning something to prevent the humans to work together. When they are close to the truth, Shi Qiang and Wang Miao have a fallout due to their different principles, but because they trust each other tremendously, the issue is resolved. And they get to save the day again.

I'm curious what made them add Wang Miao to the show? Did Yang Lei get bombed with messages of how much people love Miaomiao and Shiwang? I also wonder if Liu Cixin will have any amount of input to the script, or is it going to be 100% original writing from the scriptwriter. Will Tian Liangliang and her team write the script because she nailed the Shiwang dynamic in Three-Body? Will Miaomiao cry like Dashi feared when he hears about the illness, or will Dashi try to hide it from Miaomiao for as long as possible? Anyways, I'm just so so so so so excited for this. What a good start of 2024!!!

PS. @bahoreal didn't you write a fic about something gotten stolen from Miaomiao's lab!!!
