Thoughts on the Three Body Problem netflix series so far, having watched 5 episodes

Special effects and visualisations of key scenes are great, hope they'll stand up in later seasons set in the future. Looking forward to the droplet and the dual vector foil attack in particular.

I correctly guessed that Will would be the one whose brain they send into space. Wonder if they'll have him buy Jin a star first. This implies him and Jin will be the final couple after the foil attack, along with AA and that Galactic Humanity guy, wonder who's going to play them.

Wasn't a fan of Saul at first, but rereading Dark Forest and Luo Ji is literally him, at least at the beginning. Wonder if they'll do the whole imaginary wife thing.

Love Tatiana. At first I thought she was meant to be Sophon showing up very early.

"El problema de los 3 cuerpos"

Creo que no mee equivoco al afirmar que 'El problema de los 3 cuerpos' es el estreno más ambicioso de Netflix para este 2024. Y es que estamos ante la adaptación de una aclamada novela de ciencia ficción de Liu Cixin, pero también ante la primera serie creada por David Benioff y Dan Weiss desde el polémico final de 'Juego de Tronos'.

Es cierto que en esta ocasión comparten esa tarea con Alexander Woo ('True Blood'), pero también que ellos escriben más episodios que nadie en esta primera temporada. En ella encontraréis una ambiciosa serie de ciencia ficción que apuesta por un enfoque serio pero accesible y que ofrece lo suficiente para como mínimo llamar la atención del espectador. A cambio, no deja de ser un prólogo de 8 capítulos, dejando así una sensación agridulce.

Los cinco de Oxford son un pequeño grupo de amigos muy peculiar con solo una cosa en común: su increíble talento para la ciencia. Jin Cheng (interpretada por Jess Hong) es una física teórica deseosa de descifrar los misterios del universo. Saul Durand (Jovan Adepo) es un talentoso investigador que, pasados los 30 años, ha perdido toda esperanza de dejar su huella en la historia. Lo que ninguno sospecha es que el destino de la humanidad dependerá de la sed de conocimientos de la primera, y del talento del segundo. Bueno, y de sus otros tres amigos.

En camino al éxito sin desvíos posibles tenemos a Auggie Salazar (Eiza González), cuyas incursiones en la nanotecnología de vanguardia están a punto de ser el gran invento del siglo: las aplicaciones de su nanofibra son casi infinitas. Ahora bien, quien ya a triunfado es Jack Rooney (John Bradley) un millonario que usó sus conocimientos científicos para construir un imperio de snacks y patatas fritas y llenar la habitación de su lujosa casa LEGO y figuras de superhéroes. Y entre tanto gran proyecto, un científico más humilde: Will Downing (Alex Sharp) vive el día a día dando clase como profesor de ciencias mientras bebe los vientos por la atención de Jin.

Los cinco de Oxford son un grupo de amigos como prácticamente cualquier otro. Con sus dinámicas, sus roles de personalidad y alguna que otra tensión amorosa sin resolver. Cada uno es un prodigo en su campo, pero todo eso queda aparcado al tomar unas pintas en cualquier bar londinense y ponerse al día de sus vidas. Y así era hasta que un misterioso casco metálico, parecido a los de realidad virtual, empezó a aparecer en las casas de algunos de ellos.

Al ponerse el casco, los protagonistas son transportados a un mundo extraño y surrealista en el que son expuestos a una serie de enigmas. Problemas que sólo pueden resolverse a través de un denso conocimiento de las leyes de la naturaleza, la física y el cosmos. Los que lo prueban no tardan en obsesionarse con ese extraño juego sin hacerse demasiadas preguntas sobre su procedencia. Aproximándose con cada prueba superada, cada nuevo nivel, al gran dilema: el problema de los tres cuerpos.

Mientras tanto, los que todavía no lo han probado están viendo cómo poco a poco su mundo se rompe a pedazos. La pérdida de una compañera científica de Saul Durand en un acelerador de partículas agitará las aguas en el grupo; y las investigaciones para obtener la revolucionaria nanofibra de Auggie Salazar parecen haber provocado un efecto antinatural en ella: una cuenta atrás regresiva entorpece su mirada.

Ante esta desesperación, una desconocida le plantea a Auggie algo muy poco convencional: si abandona su proyecto escapará de un destino trágico y desaparecerán los números que la obsesionan. ¿Merece la pena sacrificarse por una investigación que ni siquiera tiene la certeza de que llegue a funcionar?

La otra realidad es que una serie de asesinatos a científicos ha hecho saltar las alarmas de la inteligencia británica. Y es ahí donde entra Da Shi (Benedict Wong) un ex-oficial con métodos toscos, pero efectivos, que ha encontrado lo que parece ser un patrón detrás de los sucesos. De modo que será totalmente inevitable que su destino se cruce con el de los Cinco de Oxford y, por extensión, conforme vaya aumentando la escala de los acontecimientos, con el del propio planeta Tierra.

La primera duda te la resuelvo ya: El problema de los 3 cuerpos no es ni la primera adaptación que la obra de Cixin Liu, ni tampoco es la que más se apega al material original. De hecho, los creadores de la serie no ahorran en cambios manteniendo parte de la trama que ocurre durante determinados puntos de la historia en China, como en el libro, pero trasladando sus dilemas a occidente. Más concretamente, a Inglaterra.

Serie complicada, no es tan grandiosa como publicitan.
