#OTD in 1918 – Over five hundred die in the Irish Sea following the sinking of the R.M.S. Leinster by U-boat 123.
The Leinster was operating as a passenger ship and mail boat, although most of those who died were soldiers returning from leave, many of them Irishmen who fought in the British Army in World War I. First World War 1914-1918. On one side were Germany, Austro-Hungary, Turkey and Bulgaria. On the other side were the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Britain’s colonies, France, Italy and,…

DUN LAOGHAIRE WATERFRONT FACING SCOTSMANS BAY
Dún Laoghaire is a suburban coastal town in Dublin in Ireland. It is the administrative centre of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown.
BADLY NEGLECTED AT PRESENT Dún Laoghaire is a suburban coastal town in Dublin in Ireland. It is the administrative centre of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown. The town was built following the 1816 legislation that allowed the building of a major port to serve Dublin. It was known as Dunleary until it was renamed Kingstown in honour of King George IV’s 1821 visit, and in 1920 was given its present name,…

[ lily james, demigirl, they/them ] — whoa! HOLLY BERNE just stole my cab! not cool, but maybe they needed it more. they have lived in the city for 8 YEARS, working as a BLOGGER/INFLUENCER. that can’t be easy, especially at only 33 YEARS OLD. some people say they can be a little bit DITZY and HOT-HEADED, but i know them to be COMPASSIONATE and ENTHUSIASTIC. whatever. i guess i’ll catch the next cab. hope they like the ride back to STATEN ISLAND!
IN A NUTSHELL; an inability to stay still, a pack of dachshunds dutifully following behind them, messy curls, a different loungefly backpack every time you see them, a pocket full of candy, a pen tucked behind their ear, dancing until the sun comes up.
tw: death, parental death
ABOUT.
Name: Holly Joy Berne Nicknames: Hol, Hols Age: Thirty-three Date of Birth: 25th December 1990 Birthplace: Dún Laoghaire, Dublin, Ireland Occupation: Blogger/influencer Romantic/Sexual Orientation: Grey-romantic/pansexual
They’re an Irish beauty who grew up in Dublin as part of a massive family.
Middle child of six (along with their twin brother).
Born on Christmas Day… full name’s Holly Joy, brother is Joseph, you can see where this is going. Their mom really loves Christmas!
They wanted the spotlight from a young age, desperate to be heard and seen, they took dancing and singing lessons, even attempted acting at one point and figure skating.
Wanted to attend Juilliard in NYC so spent their teen years working their ass off, cleaning in the ferry port, a paper round, babysitting and dog walking. If they could fit it in, they’d do it.
Sometime during sixth form they came to terms with their gender confusion, coming out as a demigirl and asking everyone around them to use they/them pronouns. They won’t be offended if you use she/her by accident as they’re very much in touch with their feminine side still, but they is their main preference.
It was another couple of years before they discovered that they were also grey-romantic, romance just didn’t come easily and they weren’t all too bothered. One night stands and fwbs was the way to go.
At 19 Juilliard came a calling! It was a shock but one they’d been so desperate for, so they packed up and moved to the States… a couple of grand short.
Freshman year went well, they lived in halls and embraced everything the city had to offer. Second year came around and they found themselves with no money, living in an apartment with four other people, infested with roaches and so run down it was a health hazard.
A little over a year later they were forced to move out and drop out of college, moving in with family they had in London, still wanting somewhere with opportunity.
Eventually set up a blog, telling tales of their time in NYC, their discoveries in gender and sexuality. They attempted YouTube as well, but it was a bit of a fail, they never had the patience to actually make the videos. Eventually Instagram worked out for them, along with TikTok in more recent years. Their main focus was and always will be the LGBTQIA+ community.
It was then they made the decision to move back to New York City, finding themselves a small apartment on Staten Island.
Their father passed away in September 2019 and they were forced to go back home to Ireland for a couple of months. Brought half of their family back with them when they returned, including their twin brother.
Dog mom to a pack of rowdy dachshunds (Wednesday, Morticia, Sally and Mrs Lovett) and usually found fighting to control them early in the morning before starting work for the day.
Hates to admit it, but sometimes they come across as kind of dim. They’re also hyper af, constantly bouncing around the place and dancing (they never gave that up), talk way too much, and are too loud for a lot of people.
Lived:
1990: Dublin, Ireland 2009: New York City, New York 2011: Notting Hill, London 2015: Staten Island, New York

more points abt the last post:
- South dublin accent is usually more posh sounding, it came from people wanting to emulate and escape the poorer parts of the area and I think it kinda suits vergil. I do think it's put on a bit however? He doesn't have it as strong as he tries to make everyone assume.
- Dante and Vergil were born in that area around Dalkey, Dún Laoghaire and Bray, so they were definitely seaside kids up until eight.
- Dante was a GAA head in primary, while Vergil kept mostly to himself.
-Vergil killed it every year at the Christmas nativity scene. Dante was a sheep every year BUT he can act.
- They both went to seperate secondary schools after Eva died. I can see them both growing into completely different individuals at this time.
- Vergil went to an ultra-cathlioc secondary school in the countryside , while dante ended up in an all boys secondary school in dublin. Vergil definitely knew Nero's mom as they had the same tutor together in their later years.
- Lady also attended school in the same area as Vergil, but they never spoke.
- Dante went to his Debutante Ball, with another boy as his secret date as he didnt know Lady yet. Vergil did not go to his.

Heɑɗcɑƞσƞs : The Lost Brother
First ! Before diving into the Verse. Have a bit of background on Ian McCullum.
Ian McCullum was the eldest living child of Cian and Caetlin McCullum of Dún Laoghaire. Born March 29th 1876. He grew up on a small farm that mainly housed chickens with a trio of cattle as their prized assets. They owned maybe two working horses that had been given to them from distant relatives, serving the fields over what little crops they managed then. Until their father landed Captain to a fisherman vessel, life was manageable.
A rather tall for a, at the time, five year old with an mischievous mug under strong jawline and light brown hair , boldly staring behind the brightest dark hazel green eyes. Traits that were more paternal oriented, while Geoffrey took after their mother. Darker hair and blue eyes. They were five years apart from one another. But when Geoffrey was born on the 26th of July 1881, that simple life was pulled out from under Ian's feet. With some animosity toward his younger sibling in the beginning. That later grew to an inseparable duo despite their rivalry as Geoffrey got older. While Cian was off on ocean escapades -- Ian, with younger brother in tow. Would often tend to the farm to lessen the load on their mother. The first two years after Geoffrey's birth, the farm had lessened in value immensely. From bad crops to the eldest horse catching ill.
Geoffrey had been around horses most of his life, but he had only owned one during his childhood. An old stallion that he immediately took to as a toddler. When the horse finally passed. Geoffrey would be mostly trespassing on other folks' equine rich farms to satisfy that itch to ride, or overall be around the creatures. Having developed habit of never asking permission and always hopping onto the back of one; that he was once labeled a horse thief from this. In which case his brother often got him out of trouble during such delinquency. His brother had been his best friend, and technically a father figure on most days. The boys real father had often been absent , the fisherman promotion had been an excuse to be less present. With rumor that Cian did not want two sons, and violently grieved over the loss of their younger sister, Maeve , taken by undiagnosed illness at the age of three. That he simply could not be bothered to stay close to shore. It was Ian who protected Geoffrey that night their father came home to their new home in Dublin, altered and violent. And because of that, he suffered for it. Geoffrey was only nine during the incident. Twelve, when he had to take the head of his brother clean off his sibling's shoulders with a blade nearly taller than he was.

without being too nosy i’d love to know what you’ve been doing on your trip! i’ve wanted to do a solo ireland trip for a while and seeing you post about yours just makes me want to more :)
yessss do it!! i love it so so much. so i've only been here since monday but i've already done some really cool things and i can recommend all of them!
on monday afternoon i just walked through the city because i was pretty exhausted after my flight and i didn't have a lot of time. i walked through grafton street (which is like a popular shopping street) all the way to st. stephen's green park and then back through temple bar (which is a very popular area in dublin).
on tuesday i went to howth which is kinda like an island (i think the correct term is peninsula i have no idea i had to google this lmfao) which is only a 30 minute train ride from the city and i did the howth cliff walk which was absolutely incredible. it's not too long but definitely long enough to kinda get that ireland feeling and to enjoy the nature. after that i just walked around the city for a little bit because i just love walking around and exploring the city.
and today i went to dún laoghaire (20 minute train ride to get there) and i basically just spent 3 hours at the harbour because it was so gorgeous. walked to the west pier lighthouse and again just enjoyed the view. it was very very windy but not too cold so i had a great time!! after that i drove back and did a guided tour through the city for like two and a half hours. it's called the highlights and hidden gems walking tour and the tour guide was really nice and funny! definitely recommend doing that tour because they tell you a lot about irish history, the irish language and lots of interesting things.

Good Things In 2022
“It’s that time of year again! Time to remember all the good things that happened in 2022. I’ve done this since 2017, and highly recommend doing this as a fun way to reflect (and to have something for future reference when you are feeling Down.)
feels like I literally just did this for 2021, and yet.
just under the wire...
PERSONAL
I MOVED ACROSS THE WORLD!!!!! I am now living in Dublin, Ireland. it was a move I'd been aiming to do for years, and once I received my citizenship and Irish passport, I decided to give it a shot. I've been here for nine months and am having a wonderful time.
I did more traveling this year than I think I ever have in a single calendar year.
In Ireland, I've visited several counties and lots of Dublin, including: Malahide, Howth, Dún Laoghaire, Dublin Mountains, Glasnevin Cemetery, Little Museum of Dublin, GPO Museum, National Gallery of Ireland, National Museum(s) of Ireland, EPIC Museum.
I finally went to Paris for a few days in June! Visited: Musée d'Orsay, Eiffel Tower, Sacré-Coeur, Notre Dame (closed to visitors due to renovation/restoration work but wandered around the outside and had a fabulous lunch). Bonus points for the Paris Métro, which fuckin rules.
I finally went to Italy for a long weekend in October! Got to see my folks that weekend as well. Spent time in Venice and Florence. Ate a lot of good food and gelato.
My beloved Seattle Mariners broke a 21 year drought and made it to the PLAYOFFS!!!!!!
I have been puttering away on a ROGUE ONE-FRINGE fusion/AU, ENDLESS FORMS MOST BEAUTIFUL. it has been super slow going but I am trying and I WILL finish it.
Similarly, sorta, I took a writing class! I shared a snippet of my original writing which was well-received. I got some lovely comments from my teacher which is currently sustaining me.
Anything bolded below is something I particularly enjoyed and recommend.

OTHER GOOD THINGS
*some of these things are Good as in well-written or well-made, but maybe not Good in topic.
Saw a couple plays at the Abbey Theatre: "Translations" by Brian Friel and "Joyce's Women" by Edna O'Brien. Quite different, both devastating.
Morocco's run at the FIFA Men's World Cup.
Joplin Sibtain, who played Brasso on ANDOR, shared a reel on Instagram of the SPOILERS riot scene on Ferrix with "Killing in the Name" dubbed over it. Incredible.
Martin Scorsese watches DERRY GIRLS.
Local Man Sees Cheese For Sale At Incredibly Low Price, Makes Executive Decision, Purchases 40 Pounds of Cheese
Is Twitter dying? Probably. Here's a thread where everyone shared their favorite tweets.
This angry little dog.
Mother losing it over her baby's laughter.
Dave Sims' calling Cal Raleigh's home run that sent the Mariners to the playoffs for the first time in 21 years.
Janan Ganesh over at the Financial Times with an incredible and scathing assessment of why Liz Truss and the Tories have never gotten Brexit "right". (Hint: they think the UK is on par with the US.)
Twitter user attempts to summarize RIVERDALE in a thread.
This TikTok of two preteen girls discovering landlines that made me LOL and also made me feel DECREPIT.
Shauna Bowers for The Irish Times with a dispatch from Electric Picnic that featured bangers of lines, including: The most sacred Electric Picnic institution of all remains untouched: the inflatable chapel, where all true love stories begin. “That’s probably the only way I’d be able to get you to marry me,” a woman says to her boyfriend. He says nothing.
Ichiro Girl returns to T-Mobile Park and throws out the first pitch to, of course, ICHIRO.
A story about how dogs are the best.
Pianist named Alex Pian covers "Time" by Hans Zimmer in Lviv, Ukraine, as air raid sirens sound. Really powerful.
Emma Baccellieri for Sports Illustrated explores a topic we've all wanted to know more about: what baseball relief pitchers are thinking when they run in from the bullpen during a bench clearing.
This video of STAR WARS characters singing a classic.... just watch it.
MORE
CONTACT is one of my favorite movies and Rachel Handler for Vulture wrote an oral history for the film's 25th anniversary.
Stephania Taladrid for The New Yorker, on the ground at an abortion clinic in Houston when Roe was overturned. Required reading.
Linda Villarosa for The New York Times, "The Long Shadow of Eugenics in America". also required reading.
Joshua Rothman for The New Yorker, "Anatomy of Error". A neurosurgeon reckons with surgeries that go wrong. Fascinating!
Rachel Pearson for The New Yorker, "Waiting at a Texas Hospital for the Children Who Never Arrive". Dispatches from a trauma center in the aftermath of the Uvalde shooting. Required reading.
Similarly, Albert Burneko for The Defector, "What It's Like Here". On being a parent in America.
Palate cleanser: Cincinnati Reds allow no hits against Pittsburgh Pirates... and still lose. lol.
Evgenia Peretz for Vanity Fair with an absolutely wild ride of a read about a Grey's Anatomy writer who.... made up an entire life.
Rachel Aviv (who never misses, incidentally) for The New Yorker, "How an Ivy League School Turned Against a Student". What makes a "good" victim?
this thread about creepy shit kids say???
PIZZA FOR DOGS.
sending you all warmth and affection and hoping you have a safe, healthy, and wonderful 2023.
tagging anyone who wants to do this (and tag me so I see it!) as well as those who've done this in the past: @vaderkat @fortysevenswrites @leaiorganas @magalis @illuminahsti @i-am-slain @antifandor @alittlemomentum @cassianserso @callioope

DUN LAOGHAIRE AT NIGHT IN JANUARY 2016
This photograph was taken in January 2016 but because I had no experience of night photography the images were not really useable at the time
PROCESSED AND PUBLISHED 10 JANUARY 2023 This photograph was taken in January 2016 but because I had no experience of night photography the images were not really useable at the time. I am now in the process of reviewing old files and this is the best that I can do at the moment. I have managed to adjust for the noise to some extent. The town’s name means “fort of Laoghaire”. This refers to…

I want to talk about work for a change. It's important to once in a while say something about what you're doing and where you're going with things. If I was still in art college I'd have endless notebooks (which I could never keep up with) and one of them would be something to do with process. If you're interested; I'm talking about YOU Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology...you tought me this (even if I didn't understand it then).
So here's an example... A lot of my Old ideas came from my head because I was a kid who just DREW but I can't say that now. Things don't crash land out of nowhere like a broken UFO.
Everything is derived from Something. Like this drawing. Even if I didn't know it at the time; I was borrowing the shape from 'The Little Tower' by Peter Brugel the Elder (c. 1563). It's a fun shape, a good painting with an interesting history and I guess my unconsious just latched onto it (the brain loves pattrens:-) ).
Does this make my drawing somewhat stolen? Is it mine at all? Well I drew it....but then again I could draw Mickey Mouse and get in a lot of trouble if I claimed he was mine. I'm no legel expert and I could argue this with you forever (as a lot of people do, endlessly) but I'm just asking; If I draw a picture derived from some other work or thing...is it mine at all? You could say (like Southpark once did) that it doesn't matter if somebody else did it; it's more the way you do it differently.
Add. So in future, if I think something is derived from something else, inspired by it or I wanna talk about what brought me 'Somewhere'. You'll get an Addendum, an addition of sorts. It's only fair. Maybe, also, we might all learn from it.
