#Coyote’s daughter

Note
Do you remember what the first piece of mythology was that you read?
What is your favorite myth?
Tumblr media
and today it is probably "Coyote and the Mouse Girls", a Koryak story I read in Barry Lopez's wonderful "Giving Birth to Thunder, Sleeping with his Daughter, even if the Coyote in it isn't really Coyote but Kutkh, the Koryak Raven-Spirit who sometimes created the world, and who has a lot of back-history with the mice, at least according to the Wikipedia entry.
Tomorrow it will be something else.

Meeting your boyfriends sister | Hangman fanfic ✨
Tumblr media
Pairing: Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin x Amber ‘Skysolo’ Kazansky
Timeline: Post-Top Gun Maverick
Tumblr media
Summary: She didn’t think she would ever be nervous about something like meeting the family. She has done it plenty of times before but what happens you boyfriend Hangman Seresin’s sister comes to town?
Charcters mentioned: Elena "Enigma" Seresin, Javy ‘Coyote’ Machado, Georgia “Peach” Wells and etc.
Top Gun Maverick AU
——
Amber Kazansky had been though a lot in her lifetime so far. From moving around as a child to different states to watching her aunt Carol die in her teens. Hell she has seen her father go through cancer and survive it.
She has seen friends break up, others get married and move on with their lives. So it was something she was fine with.
It was part of life, meeting people and trying to see if things worked. And if they did, you meet your lover’s friends. They get to meet your parents, seeing if they approve of your relationship.
But meeting her boyfriend’s sister? That was not one of them. So imagine her surprise when she founds out she’s in town for the weekend.
She. Was. Actually. Terrified!
Yeah she Amber has met a boyfriend or two’s brother and sister in the past. But a naval base boyfriend’s siblings? Never. Jake Seresin was her first boyfriend to be a pilot and a damn good one. Sadly he wasn’t good at breaking news like this.
Because he decided to break the news right before they went to sleep the night before. He said he had something to tell over dinner but forgot about it. But he remembered it right before he turned off the bathroom light and jumped into bed with her.
And he said it so casually too! Like it was the most normal thing in the world?! She knew he had siblings but she wasn’t expecting for her to come over to visit her in the next 24 hours.
Which lead her to find herself roughly tapping her French tips against her desk the next morning. Biting the tip of her nail on one hand as the other typed away furiously on her keyboard. She was filing in information for her father. His assistant, Mindy, sent a small stack of paperwork for her transfer over into spreadsheets within the next couple of days.
She was so focused on her laptop screen, having Rocket Man playing from her speakers, that she didn’t hear friend come in.
Tumblr media
Georgia smiled chatting with Bradley at the door as he gave one kiss goodbye before she walked in. She hung up her jacket and set her lunch down on table nearby, grabbing her laptop from the cart. She left it charging earlier beforehand.
“Hey Amber.” She said with a peachy grin on her face as she started rambling about her morning. It was the cutest thing. Her eyes fell onto the blonde who was only half playing attention to what happened, making the brunette pause in her tracks.
“Uhh, earth to Sky? Amber, honey? Hello?” Georgia asked, waving a hand in the air and sighed, “Kazansky!”
“Huh?! What? I’m here, sir!” She yelled snapping out of it, ripping her fingernails away from the tips of her teeths, “Oh, what’s up sweets?”
“I was talking to you and you weren’t listening. That’s what’s up! What’s going on? Your usually cracking a joke by now.”
“You know. I can be very busy, busy, busy bee!”
“Ha! No. That ain’t it. Your always on a semi-busy monthly schedule but this is different. What happened? Was it Rooster and Jen?”
“No..”
“Uhh, hmm. Did Coyote say something stupid again?”
“No he didn’t. Neil didn’t do anything either.”
“Ohh was it Cyclone’s girl Valkyrie?! She’s a tough cookie!”
“No it wasn’t. Nor was it anyone else like Frostbite.”
Georgia’s eyes widen and gasped, “You and Jake had a fight? What did his sorry southern ass to do you? I’ll talk to him. I’ll get Phoenix and Frost as my backup. No one hurts my girl and gets away with it!”
Amber couldn’t help but laugh as she leaned against her chair. Peach was such a doll sometimes. Always so sweet and charmingly spiritual with the way she carried herself. She tend to get nervous and annoyed sometimes but other than that she was well..a peach!
Honestly she needed that today. A laugh from a friend.
“That’s not exactly what Jake said…it wasn’t a fight! We didn’t fight each other for anything. Oh god, I’m sweating. I don’t like this.” Amber admitted with a soft chuckle.
“Oh god something is up if you’re sweating bullets out of nervous. Come on, spill it out!” Georgia encouraged with a certain look.
“I’m meeting my boyfriends older sister today!”
“OH MY GOD! That’s great. From what I received from past relationships, that’s a good thing. That means he likes you, a lot! I’m so happy for you!”
“Now is not the time to be supportive! I’m freaking out, what if she doesn’t like me? What if she hates me and tells Jake stop dating me?! Tell him to aim higher?! That I suck! Cause technically, it’s kinda my fault I put him on a death defining mission to come back to Top Gun. Oh god she’s gonna hate me!”
Georgia stood there with her jaw dropped onto the damn floor. This was one of the first time she ever seen Amber Nic Kazansky in such a frenzy. This woman was always cool, calm and collected from the moment she met her. Giving her advice, by saying if everything is okay and sending a message to everyone on deck she meant every word she ever said.
Yeah sure, she had her moments where she lost her cool like an X-Men during a fight with Wolverine or something. Living up to her callsigns. Like when Jake and Bradley were arguing in the classroom or when Cyclone refused to listen to her and Maverick during the missions they went on.
But this?!
Here she stood in her office freaking out over meeting the family. It was honestly kinda hilarious to her. If she wasn’t such a good friend she would’ve recorded this and sent this whole thing as a video to the group chat.
But honestly it was cute though. It reminded people like her that the Kazansky family was just as human as the rest of them.
It was Georgia turn to calm her down.
“Hey, Amber. Amber, honey look at me. Look at me. Good. Just relax you’re gonna be fine.” Georgia encouraged, holding her shoulders.
“Wh-how? Sorry. How did you react to meeting Jen? She’s practically like a sister to Rooster.” Amber replied, taking a breath.
“Yeah well, I was freaking out cause her dad is sorta a legit legend, but I found her that she’s a total goofball. So maybe eh-what’s her name?”
“Elena.”
“Right, pretty name. Maybe Elena is the same way, just some cool chick. So go on, your gonna be late.”
“But what if she doesn’t like me and Jake didn’t say anything about me? Oh god what if she hates blondes?”
“Ok, now your rambling. Relax, you just gotta prove why your the first Mrs. Hangman. That ring on your fingers means something, right?”
“Right. Right..i yeah, I got this.”
“You got this! Now go on, I have a meeting with Wraith now.”
“Okay but..”
She didn’t have a moment to say anything else because Georgia practically pushed her out the door. She could’ve sworn she’s rubbing off on the brunette with her actions. Amber relaxed her shoulders, she was right. Elena probably a cool girl, relaxed and lay back.
But she was also beauty.
She seen the picture of her last night before she went to sleep. She was stunning with beautiful long blonde hair, pretty eyes glowing like a goddess of the sun and a lovely smile that take someone’s breath away. From just her pictures she seemed like the best women in the world.
A ray of sunshine wrapped up in pretty dress.
Hell she wanted to date her!
The moment Amber entered the cafeteria, her heart stopped. She saw her.
Tumblr media
God she was even prettier in person. Laughing in mid conversation with Frostbite—Rachel, chatting about god knows what.
Elena was enjoying herself greatly. It made her smile.
Her outfit was so sweet, her smile was sung by as she laughed and her makeup made her shine.
Amber pushed her hair out of face walking over to the pair who sat at the table, chatting about they’re active services. Once she got closer she heard them a lot clearer.
“Oh stop it!” Elena said mid laugh waving her hand, “You’re the one who got her first air to air kill last week. You should be overjoyed! It’s amazing.”
“Ok it’s not as cool as you! Yeah sure, Jenny and Wraith encouraged me to do it but still.” Rachel added with a chuckle, “You have been to so many different places. That’s awesome.”
Both girls acknowledge her walking over to them.
Frost smiled sheepishly and chuckles, “Hey, have you met Elena? She’s new.”
“No, I haven’t.” Amber repiled with a soft smile turning to the blonde, “Hi.”
“Hey.” Elena said with a smile, “Nice dress.”
“T-thanks. So is yours, I love the pattern!”
“Thank you! I got it from H&M, big sale last month.”
Rachel got a phone call and realized it was one of their friends, excusing herself as she left with a small wave. That left both women to stand there awkwardly chuckling, before Elena realized what her was name again. She remembered her brother telling that her that his girlfriend worked here in the building.
She assumed this was her? But she could be wrong.
So she smiled pointing to the seat in front of her and said, “Sit. Please. Sorry I’m a little nervous, which is rare because I’m not like this.”
“It’s fine, I’m nervous too. Jake has told me about you.” Amber repiled with a smile, sitting down across from her.
“Ohhh! You’re his girlfriend? I’m sorry, he didn’t even show me a picture of you, just told me your name. He just told me that I’ll probably bump into you today.”
“Hahaha! He told me the same thing, he can silly sometimes.”
“No, he can be an idiot sometimes.”
Both girls chuckled breaking the ice a bit.
“He just said, ‘hey since your coming here for the weekend! Come meet my girlfriend.’ That’s all he said.” Elena explained with a chuckle, “I was supposed to be here last week but my boss decided to change my schedule.”
“No, it’s okay! Things happen, my schedule ain’t always the clearest either. Literally Jake just threw that information at me last night so casually. I was freaking out…I mean, you sound cool according him.” Amber repiled as she shyly smile.
Elena found it cute. How did her brother get a someone like her? She seemed so sweet and honestly pretty nice. She felt bad she didn’t get information from her baby brother beforehand, she was completely clueless about this girl.
But it a good thing in her opinion, a clean slate.
“Sounds like him, she tends to tell people stuff and never make himself clear. He’s like a bird strike, I guess.” Elena said with a smile, thinking about all the times her little brother messed up.
“Oh your correct. He knocks someone off course and brings you along for the right. But it’s a nice ride.” Amber added thinking about something and smile, “How about we start over?”
“How so?”
“It’s kinda been a long week for us and I think we should just relax..”
“I like that. Actually I love that! Good idea.”
Amber smiled holding out her hand for the blonde to shake and said, “Hi, I’m Amber Nic Kazansky. Very nice to meet you, Ms. Seresin.”
“Haha! Nice to meet you too, Ms. Kaz—” Elena replied, stopping herself realizing what she just heard and laughed, “Wait! Kazansky?! You’re the Admiral’s daughter?”
“Hahaha yes. Why? I’m sorry that last name kinda surprises people.”
“Surprises people?! How did-? No offense, but i thought the admiral’s kid would have guards nearby or something…sorry.”
It was Elena’s turn to become shocked and a bit nervous but excited all at the same time.
She didn’t know her baby brother was dating the admiral’s kid?! For how long, she didn’t know. He aimed high! Respectfully, she would date an admiral’s kid too if they let her. Even steal her brother’s girlfriend off his hands!
She was impressed. Very impressed.
Amber chuckled, “It’s okay. People like to make rumors around here.”
“Real question, how did my brother pull you? No offense, but he’s a little stupid.” Elena replied with a laugh.
“I guess I like ‘em a little dumb.”
“Oh I like you.”
“Hahaha, the Seresin siblings are one of a kind.”
“And clearly my brother has good taste in women. He got it from me! Where do you work?”
“I was gonna ask you the same thing!”
“You first.”
“Okay um. I’m a training officer for recruitment here. I overlook plenty of paperwork for research, send people on missions and organize them.”
“Lieutenant, huh? Respect. I’ll love to see your office some time.”
“What about you?”
“Oh! I work as a lead engineer at the aerospace engineering firm.”
“Wait! Really? That’s so damn so cool.”
“Thanks! I worked on designing cutting-edge aircraft with advanced maneuvering capabilities. All kind of planes.”
“How have we not met before?”
“I have no idea.”
“My uncle Mav, he was the one to worked with you guys for a project a while back. Uh, The Darkstar projects?”
“Yes! That was him?! Everyone was talking about it! He reached so high on the list that day and survived being ejected.”
Both girls laughed, kept chatting and smiling the whole time.
Amber decided to walk her around the building and probably head out to lunch later on. Elena smiled liking that idea very much, holding the door for her as they walked out of the room. Realizing they had nothing to worry about, it was all Jake’s fault that they were so nervous in the first place.
Little did they know Jake Seresin was sitting across the room with Rachel, Javy and Neil watching the whole thing, with his jaw on the floor. He glad they didn’t hate each other or anything but he wasn’t expecting for it to go so well.
Neil was laughing at his reaction and muttering, “Your screwed now.”
“W-what just happened?” Jake asked, sipping his glasses of a water.
Rachel snorted, “I think your sister just stole your girl. Honestly i don’t blame Amber, she’s cool. I’ll date her.”
That was when Jenny walked in with a smirk hearing her and asked, “Who would you date, Frosty?”
“Uh huh? What? Shut up, I’mma shut up now.” Rachel said, rested her head on her shoulder.
“Weirdo.” Jenny repiled with a scoff, grins at Javy and asks, “What we talking about?”
Javy grinning back and chuckles, “The Seresin siblings.”
“I made a huge mistake letting my sister and girlfriend meet, didn’t I?” Jake added downing his drink with a sigh.
His friends just laughed.
Thanks for reading this one! Tell me what did you think about it?

“it’s an existential thing”
a story where the return of north island's resident player leaves a girl with a lot of influence in a predicament.
chapter 2 - series masterlist - full masterlist
----
when she was younger everyone assumed she would grow out of it. her compulsive need to be around the people she loved. it wasn’t because she thought something bad would happen to them, or herself, she just needed to be there.
maybe her father was to blame. bringing her to the hard deck every chance he could, exposing her to all types of people. keeping her around bradley and carole as much as possible.
it never had to be anyone specific, just someone she cared about, and her father was never that someone. he couldn’t bring himself to separate her from the bradshaws or the kazanskys, and he couldn’t put her through relocating every couple of years because he pissed off another admiral. she knew that he loved her, she never doubted it for a second. even when she was younger she had faith in him. she had faith that all roads would lead to rome.
that is, if rome was a beach town inhabited by familiar faces and navymen that would rather be shipped off to middle of nowhere america than agree with him.
and rome had one thing that he could never replace. her.
————
the hard deck was busy, sweaty, and sticky. “there’s your beer mister buck, do you want to start a tab or pay now?” i asked as i handed the elderly man in front of me his drink.
“i’ll start a tab,” he said as he handed me his card. “any news on when your old man will be back in town.”
“soon i’d assume.” i replied. “hondo texted me this morning letting me know that admiral cain wasn’t too happy with one of his schemes and wanted to sack him.”
“how that boy isn’t out of the navy yet blows my mind.” he joked, sliding away from the bar and returning to the group of vets in the corner. i returned to the glasses i was cleaning. meticulously stacking them on the shelf under the bar. the attachment issues weren’t too much of an issue, but the neat freak issues were. how i managed rush hour in the bar was a mystery to everyone that knew me.
a pair of blue eyes greeted me as i rose from my glass organizing. before the mysterious man opened his mouth i pointed to the sign behind me. he had a look to him, one i’d seen in a younger more arrogant rooster years ago. “don’t worry, i know my manners.” he said. making sure to tip the corner of an imaginary cowboy hat down.
“if you were a real cowboy you’d know that you wouldn’t be able to wear that in a bar.” i replied, trying to suppress a smile.
“good thing i’m not a real cowboy, never got the hang of horses.” i caught a glimpse of the silver chain underneath his shirt. that combined with the aviators tucked into his collar gave away allegiance to the navy very quick. his “look at me, i get girls” smile told me everything i needed to know.
“if you aren’t gonna order something i’m afraid i won’t be able to give you any more of my time. there are paying customers to attend to.”
“i’m not here to order,” he said. “i’m here to ask you out.”
“i’m flattered but theres at least 2 men you’d have to go through before i would give you my number.” i responded while leaning over the bar to gracefully grab his sunglasses.
“and who would those men be?” he asked. i could tell he thought i was playing hard to get, which i was. it’s fun, sue me.
“i have a feeling you’ll find out soon enough.” i said as i placed the glasses on the shelf above my head. “i’m leaving now jimmy! my shifts over!” i shouted to the man in the kitchen as i began towards the door.
————
the house was cold, it always was. carole liked it that way. i liked to think that keeping the temperature sub-zero would make her ghost-self happy. almost everything about the place was the same, down to the smallest details. the paintings untouched, the trinkets on the mantle unbothered, the plants happy and healthy.
it had been years since her death but the door to her room stayed closed. bradleys room was virtually untouched since her last visit, just in case he came back. my room was the only one in the house that had been upgraded. i’d swapped my twin for a queen and replaced the posters with paintings.
i pulled out my phone to text bradley.
==
are you back? i saw a top gun boy at the hard deck earlier.
got called back for some mystery mission. is it okay if i stay at the house?
yeah obv, i own it but its still your house.
is the key still under the doormat? i don’t know what time i’ll be over.
bradley bradshaw if you bring a girl home on your first day back so help me god i will find a way to get you kicked out of the navy.
i won’t.
i’m not joking.
cross my heart, hope to die, stick a needle in my eye.
==
he came in around midnight. i imagined carole scolding him for staying out late when he had an early morning. when bradley was back for top gun she would try her best to stay awake until he got home. even when she was too weak to get out of bed. i’d lived in the house alone for years but the emptiness was still strange. some days i woke up expecting carole to be there, watering her plants or watching her tv shows, but she never was.

June was the beginning of summer reading and man did I come out swinging. If you've been following me for a while, you know that summer reading is a BFD at my work and we have a competition between departments to see who can read the most. The winning department is awarded a 3D printed trophy of a pineapple to store in their office for the rest of the year. My department hasn't won since I switched roles in the library, but really that does not do anything to hurt my competitive nature. I'm a little bit behind where I want to be in my goal towards a specific point total, but it won't be hard to catch up. Gotta give Youth Services a run for their money.
Total Books Reads: 14
Total Pages Read: 5,608
Books Read:
The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich by Deya Muniz (4/5) - An undeniably sweet, charming, hilarious love story that really puts you in the mood for a toasty grilled cheese. Seriously, I must have had three separate cravings while reading this comic. Each character has such a lovable personality, from Camembert's at times clueless, yet endearing nature, to Brie's sweetness and passion for her causes. They work well as a duo, their personalities a true compliment to each other.
The artwork is absolutely stunning, especially when to comes to the outfits. It gave me flashbacks to The Prince and the Dressmaker in how articulate and gorgeous they could be. Brie's commitment to pink really makes each one of her wardrobes leap off the page, and, again, brings a great balance when seen with Cam's deeper palettes.
I somewhat like the anachronistic aspect of the story, that you have traditional depictions of the monarchy with lavish balls and opulence that you would expect out of a fairy tale, and then someone would literally be playing with a Nintendo Switch in the next scene. It plays with the theme of steering away from tradition, depicting more contemporary, progressive-minded characters in a world that still holds onto the aesthetics of the past.
The Bloody Chamber: And Other Stories by Angela Carter (4.5/5) - Review
The Coyote Road: Trickster Tales edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling (3.5/5) - Trickster tales are my bread and butter: Coyote, Hermes, Loki, Crow, Anansi, each one so varied in their mischief but share a great chaotic force. This archetype has always fascinated me, particularly in how involved they are in humanity, whether that means taking an active role in a creation myth or imparting some wisdom that helps humankind develop in a world that is always in flux. This anthology sports many of these figures, as well as some original ones, and mostly gets its job done of portraying various tricksy individuals.
Like any anthology, it had its hits and its misses. My favorite was "The Fiddler of Bayou Teche" by Delia Sherman. The atmosphere of this particular story really stood out amongst the rest, as well as the voice of the narrator, who has a Cajun vernacular that sucks you even more into the setting. The inclusion of the loup garou also is a massive plus for me. Always a sucker for werewolves am I.
Other stories I enjoyed were "One Odd Shoe," "The Listeners," "Crow Roads," "A Reversal of Fortune," and "Black Rock Blues." Probably a bit of a sign that, out of 26 stories, I only resonated with a small fraction of them, but that's just how it goes. I was definitely thinking by the end that the anthology felt a bit too weighty, or perhaps I was trying to read too much in one go. A lot of the more middling stories were unfortunately stuck in the second half, so by the end it felt a little bit more of a chore to get through.
Burning Down the Haus: Punk Rock, Revolution and the Fall of the Berlin Wall by Tim Mohr (3/5) - An interesting snapshot in history of the punk movement during the time of the Berlin Wall. The author makes the bold claim that the punk presence was a cause for the fall of the wall when he doesn't really say anything to back that information up. The book mainly talks about specific people within the punk community and the challenge of trying to live a subversive lifestyle when going against the status quo could get you arrested. The journeys of some of the people were very engaging, though some did seem more fleshed out than others and many didn't get much of a resolution. I would have loved to have read some retrospectives from some of the people in the community, as it seemed that the author was in contact with them, just to get a wider scope of their stories.
Squire and Knight Vol. 1 by Scott Chantler (4/5) - A charming, funny graphic novel that champions the thought of books over brawn, shown through a young squire saving the day by using his intelligence and reason to get to the bottom of a cursed town. The art of the comic is wonderfully fall-like, the author sticking to a palette of muted oranges, yellows, blacks, and greys that also give it a distinct medieval vibe. Definitely a worthwhile quick read if you like a bit of mystery and humor with your quest narratives.
Also there's a cool looking dragon in it, which should be enough for anyone to read anything really.
Spindle's End by Robin McKinley (4/5) - Robin McKinley has such a fine way of transforming ages old stories and making them more vibrant and engaging for a modern audience. Given how passive Sleeping Beauty is in her own fairy tale at times, McKinley does a phenomenal job of making Rosie a very active agent in her own story in this retelling. Her stubborn, determined, and no nonsense attitude had an odd way of making her endlessly endearing and her rise to action in the climax, as well as her sacrifices, solidified her as a strong, layered character.
The world is so mischievously magical, to the point where fish are a myth and, if you let your kettles unattended, the magic dust settling over them may lead to a surprise of snakes in the pot. McKinley's descriptive style only adds to the mysterious wonder of this land, not making it too difficult to feel yourself instantly transported within its pages.
Since I am a big fan of female friendships that are polar opposites, like the rough and tumble Rosie and the beautiful, princess-like Peony, it's always a shame when those relationships fall second place behind the romantic interests that have all the appeal of drying plaster.  Also, how old exactly is Narl? He's already a smith by the time Rosie is a baby and she develops feelings for him by the time she's 16 having known him her whole life. I have no idea why large age gap romances with emotionally distant men are such a trend in fantasy but I really I think we've had enough of them.
Other than that, this was a stand out read for me, which is a welcome surprise since I found her other work, like Beauty and The Outlaws of Sherwood to be a bit middling.
Violet and Jobie in the Wild by Lynne Rae Perkins (3/5) - Read this book as it is my library's book of the summer for this year. It's a simple, sweet story that deals with adapting to new situations shown through two house mice suddenly finding themselves living in the wild. Since the story stuck mostly to lighthearted adventure, I was surprised by its somewhat bittersweet ending. It was a little more mature that what I usually expect out of stories like this, saying that sometimes people drift away from who they love to get where they need to be, and that's all right. The memory of them is what keeps that love alive and I thought that was a sweet sentiment to end on.
The Secrets of Chocolate: A Gourmand's Trip through a Top Chef's Atelier by Franckie Alarcon (2.5/5) - Has some great insight into the process of chocolate making, as well as some scrumptious illustrations that really had me craving some chocolate afterwards. It was a so so reading experience and I mainly read it to fill a category for summer reading, so I can't really give it too high a rating.
The Sandman: Act III by Neil Gaiman (5/5) - Another gorgeous installment in the Sandman Audible series. Seeing as this one collections the Orpheus story, it has some wonderful, beautiful, and melancholic music to it. The full cast brings each character to life and I continue to be impressed at how truly immersive this series is as an audiobook.
The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston (4/5) - Romances aren't usually my kind of thing, but when you mix in the qualms of a struggling author with ghostly shenanigans, then that makes a title a little more enticing. It also helps that the story focuses on the vulnerabilities surrounding grief as well as love. Florence's emotional journey was such a compelling element, especially when she holds so many fears, aspirations, and insecurities that seeing her come to terms with them feels like more of a triumph.
Though there was plenty of raw emotions in this book, it never turned morose. There is something comforting about seeing Florence rekindle her love for her hometown and finding refuge in her family. Tensions run high at times, but ultimately they're there for each other and somehow make a funeral home feel like a lively place. It's an oddly cozy book at times, full of reflection and soft moments.
Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley (4/5) - Firekeeper's Daughter is such a powerful, heartbreaking, but necessary book. Boulley takes the complicated life of Daunis, full of grief and pain. but also an unwavering love and devotion to her family and community. I love how the author speaks of Daunis in relation to her community, that she finds solidarity, wisdom, and support in the Elders that hold the traditions and knowledge of her heritage. Daunis comes from a mixed background, but being Ojibwe is a fundamental part of her character and how she views herself. I loved that she always felt confident in who she was, even when so many refused to recognize her place in the tribe.
I have to say, this book was hard to read at times. Daunis faces so many betrayals and moments where people try and succeed to take advantage of her. It's difficult to see a community in danger because of people who only want to use it for their own selfish desires. The stakes are what make Daunis' every move so important and, even when some decisions don't seem so smart in the moment, you know she's doing everything she can to make sure the people that she loves stay safe.
Her relationship with Jaimie I felt was handled very maturely. It feels like a natural parallel to Travis' and Lily's, one that knows and respects the aspects of love and what comes with it and one that doesn't. Boulley makes it abundantly clear through so many plotlines that self serving actions are what truly destroy a community and harmony with its members.
Definitely worthy of its many accolades and a great conversation starter for many of the issues it discusses.
Mortal Follies by Alexis Hall (3/5) - Review
Spider-verse by Dan Slott (4/5) - An epic Spidey tale for the ages. Though there were SEVERAL Spider people that I was not familiar with, I felt like the story handled/balanced them well enough with the more recognizable ones so it never felt too confusing. I'm sure many of them were introduced in this event series (I definitely tracked this story down solely for reading anything that involved Spiderpunk) so I didn't feel outrageously out of the loop.
While I felt that the story dragged on and off, I never got too bored with it. I wish that the omnibus I read had organized the comics so that certain character-specific issues were included at the time they happened within the overall story. Scarlet Spider, Spiderwoman, and Spiderman 2099 have separate issues that tie directly to the overall plot and are collected after its end, which make them feel like a pointless bit of catch up. They are exciting and important issues, but they could have been integrated a little more coherently.
Definitely going to see if I can track down some more Spiderverse event comics.
Edge of Spider-Geddon by Gerardo Sandoval, Jason Latour, Zac Thompson, et al. (3.5/5) - Sort of a setup for a larger event comic, but gave great introductions/reintroductions to more Spideys across the multiverse. Also, I am a simple creature, and when I see Spiderpunk on the cover, you can bet that I am going to read it in a heartbeat.

The Adventures of Y/N Mitchell: A Guide
In which I, a diabetic, write about @daughterofthereaper02 's stories of the Diabetic Y/N Mitchell series.
Fair Warning: All of the events mentioned here personally happened to me. All names mentioned aren't the people's real names. They are just names I chose.
This is my first ever attempt at writing a X reader, so I hope this is good.

1.) Takes place after Maverick (Ice is alive because I said so) (fun fact: this happened to me not even three hours ago, yeah, what an experience)
You plopped down on the couch, sweating up a storm. Over the past week, the heat had been brutal, and you hated it. Your AC has broken and you were stuck with all the house fans you could get your hands on. Nothing seemed to cool you down. Thankfully, Penny and Amelia had taken you and your father, Pete Mitchell or Maverick, out on their sailboat. You enjoyed swimming in the cold ocean, finally being able to cool off.
Finally getting comfortable, you picked up your phone and scrolled through your missed messages. Bradley wanted to know how you were doing, and so did pretty much everyone else. You sent a 'I'm good and alive' to the Dagger Squad group chat and left it alone. You picked up your CGM monitor and checked your blood, wincing at the 97 that popped up on screen.
"Crap," you mumbled, getting up and quickly going to the fridge. You had planned to go shopping the next day, so you were low on a few things. More specifically, you were low on juice and sugary sweets. You grabbed and downed the rest of the sparkling apple cider you had, which you absolutely hated. Next, you grabbed a cheese stick, and some chicken leftovers.
Settling back on your couch, you waited the recommended fifteen minutes and checked again. This time, you started to panic. Your minister read 62 and you knew you were going down fast. Scrambling for your phone, you called Bob who you had a speed dial. He didn't answer. You called Coyote next.
"Hey, Y/N, what's up?" Coyote asked, answering the phone.
"I am so sorry to be a bother, but are you still at your place?" You asked hurriedly.
"Yeah, I was just about to leave, but yeah, why?" Coyote started to sound concerned.
"Do you have any juice or sugar I could have?" You asked, putting on your sneakers, not bothering to put on any socks.
"Yeah, I do. Do you need some?" Coyote had gotten out of his car and back inside his house.
"I do," you replied. "I'll be right there." You hung up and full on sprinted to Coyote's house. Everything in your mind screamed at you to stop running and that running was a bad idea, but you ignored it.
"Y/N! I have stuff here for you," Coyote said, shoving a trash bag with orang juice, pineapple juice, and multiple soda cans. He handed you a can of cola. "Are you okay?
"Thank you," you panted. "I'm 62, but with this, I'll be good. I am so sorry for bothering you." You gulped down the can.
"It's never a bother," Coyote promised. "I can walk you back if you need me to." He looked at you with concern.
You shook your head. "No, go. I'll be fine." Narrowing your eyes, you pushed him toward the door. "I'll be fine. It's close by. Go do what you were going to do."
Reluctantly, he let you go back home. This time, you walked, sipping your cola. You hated times like these where you were low but the usual shakiness didn't happen. Once back at your house, you set the bag on the chair and jumped when you saw your father with Admiral Kazanksy.
"Y/N, what's that?" Your father asked you, making you mentally curse.
"Just some juice from Coyote," you admitted. "I was 62, so I ran to his place to get some juice. I ran out last night." You didn't realize you were over explaining until you saw Ice nod. You finished your cola and took deep, shaky breaths.
"You whAT?" Maverick yelled, rushing up to you. "You ran to Coyote's? Do you realize how dangerous that was?" He looked you over, checking to make sure you were okay.
"I'm fine, Dad. Give me a few minutes." She, with help from your father, got to the couch and sat on it, awkwardly looking from Ice to Mav. Not knowing what to say, you kept quiet as your father berated you for running to Coyote's. You knew it was a bad idea, but you panicked.
"You're lucky you didn't pass out!" He finished, staring at you.
"I know. I panicked. I'm sorry. It won't happen again," you replied.
"I just wanr you to be safe," Maverick sighed, hugging you. "How about we watch a movie?"
"Toothless?" You asked, grinning and feeling better.
"Toothless."
2.) Take place before Maverick and Reader is in sixth grade
You were sitting in the Principal's office, staring at the floor, swinging your legs. Tears brimmed your eyes and you wanted nothing more than to curl up and disappear. It wasn't your fault. You didn't mean it.
"You have been causing a lot of problems, Y/N," the Principal sighed. "You keep showing up late to classes, which we understand you have to, but you can't keep skipping half of your class periods."
"It's not my fault!" you yelled, trying not to choke up. She glared at the Principal. She was a nice lady, but she just didn't understand. "Elijah..." you stopped yourself, knowing you said too much.
"Elijah what?" The principal asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Principal Grant? Y/N's father couldn't make it, so he sent his co-workers," Secretary Caminetti said, poking her head in through the door.
"Send them in." You looked up to see your Uncle Ice and Uncle Slider. You tried to smile, but it ended up being a grimace. Part of you was happy it wasn't your father, but they weren't much better.
"I'm Tom Kazansky and this is Ron Kerner. Pete sent us," Tom introduced himself. "What seems to be the problem?"
"Y/N has been skipping classes," Principal Grant sighed, sending you a condescending look.
"No, I haven't!" you yelled, your voice cracking.
"Okay, okay, what's wrong, Y/N?" Slider spoke up before things got out of hand. "You can tell us. We won't be mad." Slider glared at the principal and Ice.
You stared at Slider and sighed, wiping your eyes. "Elijah keeps hiding my stuff," you whispered, more tears forming. "He takes my diabetes stuff and hides it so I have to look for it. He hid my insulin in his backpack and put my test kit in Caleb's locker." You broke down crying. "So, I look for it because I know I can't lose that stuff. I..."
Slider's fists clenched and Ice's eye twitched. Taking a deep breath, Slider hugged you. "It's okay, Y/N. Do you have your stuff now?" You nodded. "Good. Uncle Ice is going to talk to Ms. Grant, then we are going to get some ice cream, okay?"
"Okay," you nodded, picking up your purple backpack. Slider brought you out to the car and soon after, Ice got in. He looked back at you and smiled. "Elijah won't be bothering you anymore."
"Promise?" You sniffled.
"I promise."
3.) Takes place before Maverick and Reader is in ninth grade
You hated your homeroom teacher with ever bone in your body. You hated them so much. They were too nosy with you. Everytime you checked your blood, they made you tell them with the whole class around. When you were too high, you would get scolded and when too low, it would be worse. You'd get in trouble for being low with the reasoning you should've checked more often. Either way, you hated being around them.
During lunch, another teacher has come in and gave you and your class Twinkies as a reward for helping her with her younger classes. You happily accepted it, but before you could even take a bite your homeroom teacher snatched it and through it away.
"You shouldn't be eating that. It has too much sugar in it," they scolded you, making you extremely angry. You tried to protest, but thought against it. It wasn't worth it.
Later that year, you could choose what your yearly research paper would be. You, wanting to spite some people, chose Type 1 Diabetes as your topic. You had fun researching and writing it up. Mav did the best he could to help and you appreciated every minute.
You were sick the day the paper was due so you automatically had points taken off, but you didn't care. With pride, you brought multiple copies of you paper and handed a copy to the people who scrutinized you the most. Did you get into trouble? Yes, but to you, it was worth it. It was very much worth it.
Nobody got to tell you what you could or couldn't do. You weren't crippled because you were a diabetic. You could do anything you put your mind to. Even if you had to work harder to get where you wanted, you did it. You were in control of your life, and you weren't about to let anyone tell you other wise. Being diabetic is both a gift and a curse, and you were determined to make sure it didn't control you. It didn't control you; you controlled it. And that? That to you was the best feeling in the world.

3005 (chapter 3)
pairing: jake “hangman” seresin x fem! mitchell! oc
word count: 2231

“it’s an existential thing”
a story where the return of north island's resident player leaves a girl with a lot of influence in a predicament.
chapter 2 - series masterlist - full masterlist
----
jake seresin was a confusing man. naval aviators were cocky and headstrong, no doubt about it. my own father was guilty of that. he would admit he was an asshole when he was at top gun, but uncle tom had a million stories. like that one time when he and goose got all of the pilots to serenade a lady he talked to once.
but jake was different. he used shitty pickup lines and thought he was a gift from god with how well he could fly, he was a textbook dick. maybe it was me, but a single kiss turned him into a lovestruck idiot. like he had a proper teenage girl crush. there was something about that 6’0” blonde manchild that made me want to break my rule, let another pilot into my life. and now that manchild was on my doorstep, very drunk and very cute.
“why is there a shitfaced pilot on my porch.” i said, sounding eerily like carole whenever bradley and i would come home after a night of teenage shenanigans.
“hangman here drank a little too much and bringing him back to base would be a huge no-no.” the aviator in front of me replied.
“i don’t even know your name and you want me to take care of jake?” i questioned, rolling my eyes and reluctantly beginning to lead seresin into the living room.
“it’s coyote.” he said, extending a hand but quickly dropping it. realizing that i had my hands full with the manbaby in my house. “and you wouldn’t do it for free, were all going to fanboys lake house after the mission and you’re invited.”
“deal, but you have to pick him up tomorrow there’s no way in hell i’m waking up at the ass crack of dawn to drive seresin to the base.” i said, leading payback to the door. “and i need a real name, no callsigns in the house. caroles rule, not mine.”
“javy machado.” he replied, almost at his car “thanks for taking care of hangman, we all appreciate it.”
this was the last thing i imagined myself doing on a sunday night, especially after the events that transpired at the hard deck. it was bad enough that there was a passed out pilot on my (very nice) couch, but did it have to be seresin of all people? god? i thought, are you mad at me? if this is about me skipping church i’m really really sorry, but did you have to send me a very drunk jake as punishment? seresin was out cold, and it was very late, but i couldn’t leave him to fend for himself. i took his shoes off, leaving them by the door, and draped a quilt over his freakishly tall body. his legs were hanging off the couch, dangling like wilting flowers. part of me wanted to let him go in tomorrow terribly hungover, but i couldn’t. i left him instructions for carole’s magic hangover cure on the coffee table, and laid all the ingredients out in the kitchen. this is just so he doesn’t destroy your kitchen, i thought, and flying with a hangover is never a good idea. someone could get hurt. but the tiny voice in my heart told me otherwise, jake seresin captivated me. i wanted to know everything about him, and i wanted him to know everything about me.
——
jake was gone when i woke up. so was the note, and everything i’d left out from the night before. the blanket covering the couch instead of folded on the armchair like it usually was. other than that it was like he was never here. i sat where he was sleeping just hours before, trying to figure out how jake managed to get that drunk. at his age he would be able to handle his alcohol, no doubt about it, so why was he more shitfaced than a teenage girl after homecoming? he was cocky but he was smart enough to know when to stop drinking, so a drinking game couldn’t be a possibility, so what the fuck was it?
i thought about ask natasha, she would probably tell you the truth, but quickly shut the idea down. whatever he did last night was his business.
——
the rest of the day was a blur; i ran errands, picked amelia up from school (penny was picking up the boat), and visited uncle tom.
iceman was getting worse, we could all tell, but no one wanted to admit the worst.
“he thinks of you like a daughter,” sarah said as i was leaving his office, “even if he already has his own.”
“i know.” i replied, tears forming in my eyes. i’d never call him that, but iceman was the closest thing i had to a real father. i’m sure if you asked bradley he would say the same thing. both of us were left fatherless at a young age and tom was there to fill the gap. “has my dad come to see him yet?”
“he was here earlier this afternoon, i didn’t mean to eavesdrop but pete got him to speak again.”
“that’s good.” i whispered. my father and icemans relationship was complicated, there was an unspoken understanding that they were in love with each other. you could see it whenever they spoke, or hugged, or even maintained eye contact. tom iceman kazansky and pete maverick mitchell were in love, even if they couldn’t be together. it was a million types of love all combined into one unstoppable force. it was the love that carole had for bradley, the love that she had for goose. it was the love that every pilot in top gun had for flying. no matter how far they were the love they had for each other couldn’t be severed.
i thought i had that with mark, i tried so hard to get that with him. all my life i wanted someone to get that love, to have that connection with someone. with mark it was a wanting to be stepped on feeling, i let him treat me like shit because at least he’d treat me at all. i did everything i could to replicate what pete and tom had, even if it meant staying with a piece of shit.
“speaking of pilots coming by the house.” sarah said. “one of the returning pilots came over just before you got here. said something about needing to get your uncles blessing.”
“that’s jake,” i replied, a smile forming on my lips. i wiped the tears off my eyes with the sleeves of my jacket. “i didn’t think he would seriously come.”
“that boy is a keeper, none of your boyfriends have ever tried that hard to get tom’s approval. they were in there for nearly an hour.”
“did you hear what they said?” i asked.
“i did,” she said, pulling me into a hug. “but if you want to find out you’ll have to ask him yourself.” tears were forming again.
“i love you, i really do.”
“i know baby, i love you too.” she pulled away, and began dabbing the tears off her cheeks with a tissue from her pocket. “you give ‘em hell mallory.
——
the hard deck was slow tonight. the regulars were there, it was in their name after all, and a couple top gun boys came in. i wasn’t sure what their names were but i planned on learning. i closed early; there weren’t many people left after 12 on weekdays, and i was tired. visiting iceman was exhausting sometimes, especially when he wasn’t doing good.
i took the scenic route back, stopping at the parking lot of the old blockbuster where iceman taught me and bradley how to drive. it got converted into a target when i was in college, and carole sent me a string of angry texts complaining about how the america she knew was being ruined.
i stopped at the playground where bradley and i got high for the first time. we stole a blunt from lacey shank’s older brother and fought about where we would smoke it for a week before we got tired and did it on the swingset because we were paranoid if we left it at home any longer carole would find it.
i drove past the pop up ice cream shop where i had my first kiss. it was the middle of july and i just wanted to get it over with, bradley left me to hang out with alyssa warner on the boardwalk so i grabbed the first boy i could find and asked him if he would kiss me. he tasted like salt and fish that had been left out too long.
and i parked at the italian restaurant where mark broke up with me for the last time. we had planned to eat out for our 4th anniversary, but he was an hour late. i sat in the claustrophobic booth waiting for him to show up, and when he finally did i had reached my limit. i wanted to scream at him and hit him and do anything to get the last however many years of my life back, but all i did was tell him we were over and drive away.
when i returned home i expected to see bradleys truck parked in the driveway. but instead of the dirty blue truck i was used to, there was a shiny black pickup in it’s spot. and there was a tall, blonde, aviator standing on my porch. it was dark, but the dim lights on the porch illuminated his face. bugs were drawn towards the light, and his eyes were drawn towards me as i began making my way towards him. “i talked to your uncle.” he said, leaning on the post by the stairs.
“i think you mean admiral kazansky,” i said. strolling past him and sliding my keys into the door. “i may not allow callsigns in the house but you still need to respect your superior.” the door eased open and i began to take off my shoes as i entered the foyer.
“you don’t wanna know what he had to say?” jake asked, staring at the picture of me, carole, rooster, goose, and maverick framed and hung on the wall behind me.
“i’m sure you had only nice things to say about me.” i replied, “god knows you wouldn’t be standing here if anything negative came out of your mouth at tom’s house.” grabbing his hand i led him into the house. “close the door bagman, i don’t want to let spiders in.”
“what happened to no callsigns?” he joked as he began to unlace his boots, placing them by the umbrella holder.
“i never said no nicknames, or petnames.” i responded, making sure to whisper the last part. “do you want dinner? i was already planning on cooking for two.”
“i’d love something to eat sweetheart.” the petname was apart of his regular vocabulary, no doubt about it, but something about the way he said it sent blood rushing to your cheeks. if i wasn’t in the middle of connecting my phone to the speakers, my hand’s would have started shaking like crazy.
“pick up a knife and start cutting,” i said, deliberately turning away from him and towards the cool fridge in an attempt to pull the redness out of my face and towards somewhere less noticeable. after spending a little too much time in the frosty safe haven, carole was probably scolding me from heaven, lecturing me about wasting energy, i emerged from my hole and handed jake a packet of chicken. “cube that.”
“will do, m’lady.”
“less talking more cutting.” seresin was charming, there was no denying that. he had managed to win over tom and sarah, which was no easy feat, and he was determined. if he wanted something, he got it. as i bent over to grab a cutting board from the cabinet under the island, “let’s hear it for the boy” began playing over the speakers. unless you were paying very close attention to him, you wouldn’t be able to catch jake very quietly humming and moving (very slightly) along to the song. “oh my god!” i exclaimed. he turned around alarmed, a look of concern splayed across his face. “you like footloose!”
“jesus christ you scared me mallory,” he said, setting the knife down to grab my arm and spin me around. “but you’re wrong.”
“i’m never wrong.” i quipped, sticking my tongue out at him.
“but you are.” he replied, letting go of me. “i don’t like footloose, i love it.”
“god you are so corny.”
“you know it baby.” jake said as he returned to his cutting.
that moment played in my head for the rest of the night. everytime i looked at jake i could his arms spinning me around again, everytime we made eye contact. it was all i could think about. we made casual conversation, neither of us mentioning the other night. i didn’t want to talk about the creep and i assume he didn’t wan to talk about why he showed up at my house in the middle of the night blackout drunk. and when it came time for him to leave, i packed him leftovers and planted a kiss on his cheek. “i’ll see you soon seresin.”
