Not from the ask list but the characters in ur fics as Irish counties and why?
anon, this has absolutely sent me. i have genuinely never seen something more up my alley.
let's start with characters we can pull from the series for ireland's six superior counties, shall we...
antrim = oliver wood
a county full of lads who've never met a spivvy tracksuit they don't think is the height of fashion, and who have a vastly inflated sense of their success at sports.
armagh = tom riddle
armagh has a [deservedly] bloody reputation. he could settle down in the murder triangle. he'd like that.
down = draco malfoy
people who live in co. down really like thinking they're better than the rest of us just because it's easy for them to get to belfast [lads, how's that something to boast about?], so they have to be the series' whiniest flop.
fermanagh = rubeus hagrid
fermanagh is full of docile lads who build things, in my experience.
londonderry = ron weasley
canonically gorgeous, gorgeous girlies live in this fine county - by which i mean, of course, that i do. we deserve to be represented by the series' most gorgeous girly. and a ginger sweetheart with six siblings [so you know which side of the sectarian divide his parents are on...] would go down a storm with our mams.
tyrone = harry potter
my brother once had his nose broken in a pub in strabane, which doesn't sound particularly interesting until you realise that my brother is a priest. by which i mean - a county filled with people who are reckless, quick-tempered, and always ready to throw hands? it can only be represented by one man...
---
and then the rest...
carlow = quirinus quirrell
the most interesting thing there is a big rock.
cavan = percy weasley
everyone i've ever met from cavan has been really boring and really tight. so there's that.
clare = ginny weasley
because it's gorgeous, in a not like other girls way.
cork = albus dumbledore
look at this canon line and tell me dumbledore's not a cork man... "In fact, being — forgive me — rather cleverer than most men, my mistakes tend to be correspondingly huger.”
donegal = sybill trelawney
always away with the fairies up there... and always drunk too.
dublin = walburga black
everyone you've ever met who lives in dublin is genuinely shocked to discover that the rest of the world exists beyond the m50. it's not not giving "has never set foot in muggle london and would die before she did".
galway = arthur and molly weasley
galway is the home of the nation's sophisticated [and, apparently, sexually adventurous] culchies - which fits two people from clearly quite distinguished backgrounds who nonetheless live the way they do...
kerry = gilderoy lockhart
you will never see american tourists get scammed more glamorously than in kerry.
kildare = regulus black
considerably less interesting than - and devoid of identity in comparison to - its neighbour, dublin.
kilkenny = charlie weasley
all they do is have red hair and hurl.
laois = daphne greengrass
on account of her irrelevance.
leitrim = sally-ann perks
on account of her irrelevance.
limerick = bellatrix lestrange
limerick used to be known as "stab city". she'd fit right in.
longford = mungundus fletcher
gombeen men abound.
louth = myrtle warren
because they [by which i mean the two people i know who were born there...] are always fucking moaning.
mayo = remus lupin
perpetually mopey, unless they reckon they're great at something.
meath = cormac mclaggen
they wish they were as class as the lads in dublin.
monaghan = cuthbert binns
genuinely couldn't locate it on a map.
offaly = grawp
i mean, who fucking knows? the entire place is a bog.
roscommon = aberforth dumbledore
you can guess why...
sligo = fred and george weasley
wheeler dealers, the lot of them.
tipperary = fleur delacour
the home of gorgeous, gorgeous girlies with striking accents.
waterford = dobby
they love a good strike.
westmeath = hermione granger
not somewhere you'd expect you'd choose to live if you were a bit of a know-it-all. and yet.
wexford = neville longbottom
they love to bang on about the soil.
wicklow = marge dursley
she drives a range rover and looks down on anyone who farms, change my mind.

1920 Irish local election highlighting areas which supported pro-Irish independence parties in green versus areas which supported pro-UK parties in purple.
by u/MapsnStats
The 1920 Irish local elections were the last set of elections in Ireland whilst it formed part of the United Kingdom.
The result was almost identical to the 1918 general election where Irish Unionists won a majority in present-day Northern Ireland whilst pro-independence Sinn Féin won all-but-three constituency seats in present-day Republic of Ireland: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_Irish_general_election
In present-day Republic of Ireland, the affluent south Dublin suburbs of Pembroke and Rathgar were the only areas to vote for pro-UK parties outside of Trinity College Dublin.
In present-day Northern Ireland, all parts of County Antrim and most parts of counties Down and Derry/Londonderry voted for pro-UK parties, with Tyrone being more pro-independence leaning and counties Fermanagh and Armagh being quite evenly split.

#OTD in Irish History | 29 March:
1613 – A charter incorporates Derry as the city of ‘Londonderry’ and creates the new county of ‘Londonderry’. Despite the official name, the city is more usually known as simply Derry, which is an anglicisation of the old Irish Daire, which in modern Irish is spelt Doire, and translates as ‘oak-grove/oak-wood’. The name derives from the settlement’s earliest references, Daire Calgaich (‘oak-grove…

Bangor receives city status in Princess Anne visit
By Mark Simpson | Published 2 December 2022
Bangor in County Down has formally received city status in a ceremony attended by the Princess Royal.
The ceremony took place at Bangor Castle with Princess Anne unveiling the city's official warrant.
City status was granted by Queen Elizabeth II to mark her platinum jubilee, three months before her death in September.
Bangor is now one of six cities in Northern Ireland, along with Belfast, Londonderry, Armagh, Lisburn and Newry.
Princess Anne said it was "always a pleasure" to visit Bangor, reminiscing on her previous trips in 2013 and 2016.
Tumblr media
She spoke about Bangor's historical importance as a centre of learning, noting its appearance on the medieval Hereford Mappa Mundi as "civitas benair" (city of Bangor).
"I can only apologise for taking so long to make sure that in fact you are now properly a city in 2022," she said.
The princess praised recent investment in the area, adding that she hoped city-status "provides a real boost to these exciting plans".
Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris was also at the event, which was hosted by Ards and North Down Mayor Karen Douglas.
Mr Heaton-Harris said he hoped city-status would attract visitors and boost the economy.
Tumblr media
Bangor was one of eight UK towns elevated to a city in May after a competition in which it was required to show its royal associations and cultural heritage.
Its application pointed out that in 1961 the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh visited Bangor Castle and had lunch at the Royal Ulster Yacht Club, before the duke raced in a regatta.
City status is often associated with having a cathedral, a university, or a large population.
However, there are no set rules for being granted the status, which is awarded by the monarch on advice of ministers.
Twenty years ago, Lisburn and Newry were awarded city status in a competition to mark the Queen's golden jubilee.
Tumblr media
In the 2011 census the population of Bangor was just over 60,000.
It is situated beside the coast, at the mouth of Belfast Lough.
A number of famous faces come from Bangor, including the lead singer of Snow Patrol, Gary Lightbody, author Colin Bateman, golfer David Feherty and artist Colin Davidson.
Nobel Peace Prize winner Lord David Trimble, who died earlier this year, spent much of his early life in the town, attending Bangor Grammar, one of 19 schools in the area.
In the past it was a seaside resort which was popular with day trippers and tourists who gathered on the beach in front of the town.
In the late 1980s a marina was built, transforming the seafront.
Tumblr media
Like many places it has been hit hard by the building of shopping centres on the outskirts of the central district.
There are plans in place to try to rejuvenate Bangor, with the hope that its new city status will help.
The city's courthouse was recently turned into a music venue, and other projects are in the pipeline.
Bangor's road signs will not change immediately to reflect its new status as a city - they will continue to refer to "town centre".
"Officials are content to liaise with Ards and North Down Borough Council representatives to consider a possible phased renewal of signs in conjunction with any replacement of signs the council is responsible for," said the Department for Infrastructure.

I started a new job recently and I’m the only Irish one in the group of 17 of us. The rest are English/Welsh and 2 Indians. But I’m from Derry in the North and so far I’ve been asked if I’m from “Londonderry.” No. That’s why I said Derry. And also asked why there is the north and the Republic of Ireland. I was like “um… the Brits came and tried to take over, the Easter rising happened in 1916 and they gave up 6 counties in the north under the impression they’d get them back. So really it’s all you guys’ fault.”
Went down a treat as you can imagine lol
WILD. I feel like. The English should. Perhaps be educated on the history a bit. I've been living in the States and the ways people don't know things is shocking especially considering how many descend from the Irish but man England we are beside you and it was your fault. like you should know. especially considering these are still hot topics in both our governments regarding NI.
