alfred rocking some different flight jackets (nerd stuff under cut)
The flight jacket, an iconic piece of any aviator's outerwear. Before they ever became symbols of fashion and the 'exalted' place that came with the occupation of pilot, the flight jacket as we know it was first made for function. Aircraft of World War I and the earliest designs were open cockpit machines, and many would remain that way in the Interbellum. All that to say this paramount paraphernalia's original purpose was to keep an aviator warm in the sky.
Keep in mind that the images above may not reflect every specimen of their type. Jackets differed in design by manufacturer, production block, and even by the military branch (Navy jackets also often have a different name) & unit ordering them. A great example is the wide range of looks for the quintessential B-3. My apologies in advance for them being all American designs. I would love to show off some of the British flight jackets, but I would rather do a little more research (and practice drawing Arthur more)!
A-1 (1927-1931) A thin leather jacket designed for lower altitudes and made with a flattering fit high on the waist, the A-1 was the kickstart to the wide variety the Army Air Corps would come to know. The A-1 had differing designs between the Navy and the infant Air Corps, and early A-1s are distinguished by having seven buttons and a knit collar, which later models did not keep. However, later models did retain the knit waistband and cuffs.
A-2 (1931-1943) The direct successor to the A-1, the A-2 quickly replaced its older brother. This is one of the more recognizable jackets from the States after becoming the standard for the Air Corps in the early 1930s. The quality of the jackets would fall due to wartime rationing, with early designs of horsehide and silk becoming goatskin and cotton, however, the general look remained. The A-2 was still primarily for open cockpit designs, lower altitudes, and warmer climes. Identifiable from the A-1 by its snap-down leather collar, zipper, and varying shapes and sizes of a hook-and-eye clasp at the collar to close it.
G-1 (1938-present) This looker would replace the A-2 in form and function during the 1940s, first becoming popular with the Army and Navy before being adopted by USAAF. Originally named the ANJ-3/AN-J-3 the jacket gained its new designation by the time the Air Corps caught on. The G-1 came with a mouton collar and a bi-swing back to allow for greater arm movement, meanwhile, it lacked the over-zipper 'wind flap' of its predecessors. A keen eye for pop culture might realize that this is the jacket from the 1986 hit Top Gun.
B-3 (1934-1943) Ah, the B-3! Commonly known simply as the "bomber jacket," the B-3 was made with a high-altitude bomber in mind, unlike previous designs. Incredibly bulky and lined with sheepskin the B-3 was made to keep crews at 25,000 feet above from freezing in their unpressurized cabins, with many such as the early B-17 Flying Fortresses possessing open waist gunner ports. The wide collar could be closed with two leather straps and the jacket did not come with the famous knit waistband or cuffs that others did. "The General" was a B-3 design made specifically for General George S. Patton, who popularized the B-3 outside of the Air Corps. (The B-3 had a slimmer cousin - the B-6 - designed as the 'quality of life' inside bombers improved, such as pressurized cabins.)
B-7 (1941-1942) Short-lived, the B-7 Parka was manufactured for pilots operating in the brutal cold of Alaska. However, not much is known of it due to its limited production. In fact, the B-7 was discontinued swiftly due to its high manufacturing cost. Either way, the B-7 is a funky one-off that is easily distinguishable from the lineup by its three-quarter length and coyote-lined hood.
B-15 (1944-1954) The infamous green flight jacket that many today typically know as the "bomber jacket". The B-15 quickly replaced its older brother, the B-10 (1943-1944). Like other designs it had many variations. Similar to the G-1, the B-15 shared the same pocket design and lack of a wind flap, yet the B-15 was cloth with a mouton collar and a knit waistband and cuffs. The shell was produced in a range of materials including nylon and cotton-rayon. It was lighter weight and far less warm than its sheepskin predecessors and spoke to the advancements in aviation technology. A quirk of its design that soon became standard was the designated pen pocket on the upper left arm.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Thinking about Shuggy college au and got to thinking about the relative ages of other characters and now I’m thinking of end of High school aged Frobin. Robin is that loner goth girl turned popular goth girl that is still seen as a bit odd but she’s smart and helpful and has a slightly morbid sense of humor that just endears her to her classmates. Franky is that loud jock who comes to school in way too short shorts even when the weather doesn’t permit for it. You’d think he’s a huge dumbass from the way he acts sometimes but he actually knows a lot of stuff and gets decent grades and is pretty nifty with machines (Also sometimes babysitting his kid neighbor Usopp and teaching him how to not hit his thumb with a hammer). Both of them having this kind of „end of a slow burn relationship where Franky is trying to gather his nerves and tell his long term friend that he has feelings for her and it’s completely fine if she doesn’t, but also she’s going to move to college after the end of this school year and he’s afraid about what that means for them and not to mention he’s „smart“ but Robin is like „SMART smart“ and is going to study history and oh GOD what if this is the thing that makes them loose contact and Oh god, oh no, oh fuck.
… probably ends with her just spontaneously taking his hand and asking HIM out, completely oblivious that he has been fretting over this for almost an entire school year. Just felt like the right thing to do to her. A decision she made right that moment.
I... I never really calculated her years in the college au and at first I thought, pft, she won't be that old but then... like she IS around 10/11 years older than Luffy and assuming he's around 5/6 she'd be in her last years of school omg D:' I'm supposed to be good at math how did I not see this???
Also you have no idea how happy I am, this is my first frobin ask I was so happy when I saw it and then my happiness doubled because it's the college au hahaha :')
If I haven't given you a name, can I call you Franon? Or Fronan?? (haha cuz frobin + anon...)
(Edit: by the time I was halfway through writing this post, I realized I've written an entire subplot lol':))
Robin is definitely that weird kid in school that's a bit too smart for her own good and most teachers just think she's a smartass. The type that even though she moved schools and now she's pretty (and still a bit weird, just hides it better), she still has the outcast mentality. She doesn't know how to be herself and she definitely doesn't know what to do, react or even comprehend that someone wants to be friends with her. Let alone to be interested in her romantically.
Franky on the other hand is so outgoing because he's so weird. People will see him in a blizzard in his short shorts and sunglasses and go "how the heck are you not cold". He'd respond with "oh, I'm freezing! I have a parka and two cotton shirts under there!" and people would laugh along. The type to high-five and greet random people he's talked to once as if they've been friends for ages. I feel like he'd also kinda be the class clown but in a somewhat respectful way. There's a meme about someone calling Prometheus a mad lad and then Hermes a Chad, and I feel like that would be his vibe.
Also, I'm sorry Fronan/Franon, but I'm absolutely stealing the idea that Franky babysits Usopp and they have fun arts and crafts type of bonding. He'll need it for the stuff I've been planning for him and Yasopp >:]]]
Everyone assumes he's a moron, but it's until Robin sees him in one of his extracurricular advanced classes that she realizes he's not only smart but funny and fun to be around. It turns out that they also have a lot in common and quickly become friends.
Also him overthinking it and her asking him out is so on brand imo and I absolutely love it. And maybe here comes into play the fact that he's so friendly with everyone so he automatically assumes people like him so he doesn't know what signs for romantic feelings look like? And how she doesn't think anyone could like her in that way? I can imagine him trying to talk himself out of it because she's going places and what could he give her to make her be with him anyway. While she's sitting next to him already planning a schedule for their talks for their long distance relationship.
And of course, their long distance relationship works very well. They both love each other so much they try their best to have at least two or three nights to talk. In fact, their relationship has a very strong foundation of getting to know each other because of the physical separation.
Or so I'd like to think hehe :')

Couple #5: Ty Lee x Azula
Prompt #1: “Why are you helping a monster?”
For the prompt game!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two months after Azula is committed to the mental hospital
Ty Lee sat in the Jasmine Dragon with a few of her friends late one afternoon. Her and Zuko were engaged in a highly competitive game of Pai Sho while Mai and Sokka watched and chatted casually.
"Ha! I win!" Ty Lee exclaimed suddenly, jumping out of her seat. Zuko only responded with a groan of frustration. Iroh came up behind and placed a hand on his shoulder.
"I thought you old uncle taught you better than this nephew," He spoke with a chuckle, he received only another groan in response.
"I guess it's a good thing you didn't have to beat Ozai in a game of Pai Sho for the fate of the world huh?" Ty Lee let out a light bubbling laugh. She wasn't wrong after all. The young woman then glanced up at the clock by the door, "Oh! Goodness me, I'm going to be late"
"Wait, where are you going?" Mai grabbed her arm before she could float her way out the door. "I'm headed to the hospital," Well, that's not a complete lie
She had hoped Mai would take the hint and drop it, it seemed like she would but then Sokka and his ever-diligent-oldest-brother tactics stepped in. The water tribe boy took both her arms gently in his and began scanning her over frantically. "What's wrong?" He demanded. Just then Zuko came up behind him and placed a hand on his shoulder, spinning him so they were face to face.
"Sokka, nothing is wrong. She's going to see Azula," Sokka's face blanched noticeably. He wrenched out of Zuko's grasp and turned back to face her. "Azula? Why?" Ty Lee was sure he meant it out of concern rather than accusation, but it didn't come out that way. "Uhm, because she was my best friend Sokka," She folded her arms defensively, "And yes she made some mistakes but she needs help, why do you think Katara has been working so hard on hospital reform? It's a disaster after the war,"
She spoke clearly but Sokka couldn't hear her. It felt to him as though someone had shoved cotton in his ears. He understood that Azula was just another child used as cannon fodder in this war- especially after Zuko had explained everything to him. But he just couldn't get the image of Aangs motionless body, and the scar on Zuko's chest out of his head. He felt as though someone had just thrown him in to the ocean with his parka on, and he was drowning.
Which is why he couldn't stop the next words that left his mouth. "Why are you helping a monster?" He spat, Ty Lee's hurt expression wasn't enough to draw him back to reality, "She killed Aang, and nearly killed Zuko and Katara, how can you just forgive her so easily?!" Zuko sharply tugged on his arm to get him to stop, and Mai took a defensive half-step in front of Ty Lee- who just shoved her out of the way.
She got directly up in Sokka's face, more distraught than he had ever seen her. "So?" She countered, "I tried to kill all of you, so did Mai! So did Zuko! Yet you're sitting here with us as if nothing happened," "That's different, you've changed" "Yes! We've changed! Do you want to know why? Because we were given the opportunity to do so, and were surrounded by good people who decided to love us. Where is Azula's second chance? No one ever offered the other side to her. So don't you dare call her a monster when she was raised to be a weapon. You can use an arrow to cut fabric, but that does not change its nature," Satisfied with Sokka's remorseful look- she shoved past Mai and stormed in to the heart of Caldera.
~~~
"She still isn't full coherent, we're doing all we can but our resources are spread too thin" Someone spoke softly, but Azula felt as though she was listening from under water. Everything was muted and fuzzy.
"I understand, you can leave us. Thank you," Still muted, but a voice she almost recognized. Almost, She could have screamed from frustration, but she learned in her first week that screaming didn't help anything. It wasn't much different from living under her father in that way.
"Azula," That same voice was clearer now. She opened her eyes, squinting in an attempt to focus. She almost went back to bed, assuming it was one of the ever-changing nurses or guards coming in to drag her away to Agni-knows what. Upon further inspection, as the girl drew closer, a familiar shade of pink sparked her memory. Ty Lee - her mind finally provided. The only bit of consistency in this damned place.
Azula moved to hug her friend, suddenly awash with emotion. Only to be brutally reminded of her situation, the straight-jacket held her firmly in place. She hung her head, long dark hair falling around her. Her mind spun, trying to piece back together everything that had happened.
"Azula," The voice came again, followed by a hand on her forearm. Azula tried to jump back, pulling against her restraints. "Hey, hey, it's okay. It's just me," That same hand reached up to cup her face. Tears began to roll down the princess' face. Ty Lee spoke again "I brought you a surprise, had to sneak it past the guards" Azula finally lifted her head to meet her eyes. Warm and familiar, it steadied her unlike anything else.
She still didn't respond, but Ty Lee always seem to understand anyway. She can probably read my aura or some other spirit superstitious nonsense. Azula scoffed to herself bitterly. The fact that her and Mai even got released from the boiling rock was an insult and dishonor. They would all pay for that one day.
But for now, Ty Lee was dangling a strip of read leather in front of her face. Azula's favorite hair piece, it was worn and soft with time. She reminisced on the day her mother gave it to her, it was a much darker shade of red then, with thin strings of gold woven in to the edges. It made her heart ache, mother.
"Let's handle this then," Ty Lee mused brightly. She twirled her way behind Azula, moving smoother than royal silk. Her soft hands raked through Azula's hair in a feeble attempt to get the worst of the tangles out. Azula was prone to bouts or rage and thrashing, the nurses had long since given up attempting to keep her looking presentable. Even if she was technically still the princess.
Soon after, her hair was pulled out of her face- just the top half. Azula was reminded of... something... a beach? A volleyball net, dusk, a handsome boy, a beautiful smile, a bonfire, a monster.
"It's okay Azula," Ty Lee was kneeling in front of her now, hands placed on the bound girls knees, "I won't leave you behind,"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Okay this one was drammaaaaaa I really tried to keep the characters true to how I think they would act if this actually took place in the show I hope you enjoyed! xoxo
Visiting a national park like Mount Rainier during the winter season can be a special and unique experience. In a matter of 2 hours, you drive from Tacoma or Seattle at sea level and climb up in elevation to 5,420 feet above sea level at Paradise. In that drive, you quickly leave behind the balmy weather near sea level and open water, moving inland and uphill. Climbing in elevation most often means a fall in temperature. (Not always, there are inversions now and then.) Higher and higher you drive, colder and colder the temperatures get.
Then you get out of the car at Paradise and it hits you. Cold.
Tumblr media
What do you bring with you to keep your self warm and comfortable while recreating at Paradise?
As the old saying goes, cotton kills. It is not your friend in cold weather. Cotton holds onto any moisture and doesn’t insulate well so as you sweat (or get snowed or rained on) a cotton layer can trap the wet and make you colder.
Tumblr media
Other fabric types, like wool, silk, and synthetics, can insulate much better even when damp or wet. Wearing different layers of these fabrics can be key to enjoying a comfortable visit to Mount Rainier. Outer layers like a parka are great. Then a middle layer like a fleece or sweater. And an inner layer like a long-sleeved shirt.
But there are many options and ways to layer. What is your favorite way to layer?
3 or 4 layers?
What is your emergency layer that you always pack for a visit to the mountain? ~ams
