The first FredFilms production tag, by Colin Raff & Jon Kane
Master filmmaker Jon Kane (co-director of the latest film by Godfrey Reggio, scored by Philip Glass, and featuring Mike Tyson!) and I have worked together since... well, since a long time. (The first time in cartoons was for Oh Yeah! Cartoons.) He’s also a music freak and audio master. Jon created the iconic [shout!] “Frederator!,” which branded my first studio with a bunch of animations. Including a few by Berlin based artist Colin Raff.
So, when I asked Jon to create the audio tag for FredFilms projects, Colin’s unique filmmaking was the first one I thought would be great for the visuals.

TW: Suicide, brief mentions of death
The Long and Short of It (The story of Quill’s Life)
Quill was born to a typical middle class family situated in San Antonio Texas, in the year 1987. She would later become an older sister in 1991. Though, even from a young age, it was clear there was something fundamentally odd about her. It was chalked up to her just being a bit smarter than the other kids. Always finishing the assigned reading a bit too quickly, speeding through class work, acing tests. Of course the other kids took out their frustrations on her, it was all so infuriating to them that she easily grasped what they could not.
Though she took their jives in stride. She’d read enough silly chapter books to understand that their words were pointless. The other kids weren’t using their gift of language tactfully, instead just sloppily slinging it around at whatever they fancied. No real strategy or plan. It wasn’t until they started getting more physical with their brutalities in middle school, that she snapped. Quill may not have had any sort of real strength behind her, but as the years had progressed she had collected enough dirt on her classmates to fill their graves. Before she even knew what black-mail meant, she had started doing it.
It didn’t take too much longer after that for the staff to catch on and bust the whole operation. Quill had always hated authority, though it was more of a fearful stance. The thought of being disapproved of by someone with more say so in your life than you, was horrifying to her. Quill learned to be sneakier after that. She recruited those classmates that she thought were the most intelligent to help her out too. Offering them whatever she could give them. It was just middle school after all, nothing serious, probably just fruit roll ups and pokemon cards. So Quill had a relatively smooth middle school experience after dealing with the riff raff.
When reaching high school, she knew that none of the things she was blackmailing her
old classmates were substantial enough to matter. “Colin stole an apple from the lunch line!” didn’t have the same weight anymore. Her former recruits were now a group of friends, who just so happened to have a loyalty to Quill. The feeling of being in charge of people exhilarated Quill, she was relishing in it. She didn’t have to bribe anyone anymore, she just had to stay affable. Keep her requests reasonable.
Eventually she had scraped together a notebook full of every little bit of verified gossip on everyone she could. She never put the false rumors in of course, she was smarter than that. She wouldn’t write anything down until she knew for sure it was true. With her little network doing its job she was able to cleverly disguise what she was doing as simple gossip. She had discovered how to kill two birds with one stone, getting more info on people while getting closer with her friends. To say she only saw them as tools would be false however, she may not have formed the most emotional attachment ever, but she wouldn’t hesitate to protect them.
When she got out of highschool, she now carried a book of secrets that could ruin careers and even lives. Estrange family members from each other even. She may not have needed to gather secrets anymore when she was in highschool, but she certainly did it anyway. Her former classmates would all take up their careers, some even getting into government jobs. This all delighted Quill, to know she could just ruin all of that for them easily. The power of knowledge had always been alluring to her, but this? This was on another level for her twisted mind.
Though through all of this, as Quill got progressively more and more out of control, her parents were not free of their own issues. This was something Quill actively ignored. All the time spent at home was time she was making herself busy. She didn’t care to listen to the fights downstairs. She didn’t care to see the marks of everything that had transpired on her parents' bodies. She had long cut her attachments to them off. Which she assured herself was the tactical move. Her parents never seemed to care much what Quill did either, seeing as she never got in trouble.
That was until her brother went missing. Quill’s brother on the other hand, still did deeply care about. He was a pest, but he was very much her pest. He had been born with a medical condition that prohibited him from doing any sort of physical activities which caused him to be the subject of a lot of teasing. Quill didn’t find out about any of that teasing until after he had vanished. This angered her greatly. What angered her more, is when they actually found her brother. He was dead, and it wasn’t murder. They’d found that he had done it himself. Quill sought someone to blame immediately. She threw fingers at her parents for not noticing what was wrong. She cursed his peers. Yet she internally saddled the most blame with herself.
At the ripe age of 19, Quill had finally lost all of her family, because her brother had been the only one she really enjoyed speaking to. He had been quiet, considerate, but not a fool. He was also only 15. This led Quill to act even more tactically, weighing her logic over her emotions until she was sure she had not an ounce of real feeling left. Which was wrong in every way. She certainly still felt, and she felt deeply. She just actively ignored it.
Though she now found her pockets empty, and her parents to be separated and moved away now, Quill was no less cunning. She was able to start up a cult on some old property she bought for dirt cheap after selling off some of her own personal items. The land had a dilapidated old church and a small house on it. Both of which she quickly fixed up with the help of her friends turned loyal followers. With the set up complete, she grew her cult quickly. By the end of the year she had started it, she had well over 30 members. All of whom rained their money and adoration down upon Quill.
Of course she knew everything she preached from that pulpit was a lie. A beautiful, well woven lie. She would write her sermons the night before, using pieces of other religions to hold everything together. She found loopholes in laws, and studied successful cults of the past. She was able to fully operate and make the most money out of her cult as possible, while staying completely legal, and keeping her followers loyal. She became a master manipulator over time. Able to subtly keep everyone under her thumb for years. Until the well of money ran dry. So she took advantage of the free labor she was privileged to, and started a restaurant. She tried a few other things before that, quilts and pottery were notable tries, before she found an old diner going out of business.
The place got popular around town. Quill didn’t have to even lift a finger to run the place most days. Some of her cultists had even quit their jobs to run it full time, moving into the compound. They were paid in food from the kitchen they worked in, and couldn’t be happier. Other cultists noticed how much happier their peers were after moving into the compound full time. They sold off their belongings, moved in, and gave Quill the money as tribute.
Everything was going even better than Quill had anticipated. That was until a nosy local reporter named Jack, started poking around too much for Quill’s liking. She knew him to be one of her brothers' aggressors from 3 years prior, so she already had a severe distaste for him. He’d even had the audacity to go to the funeral. Eventually he found out everything, and plastered the story on every news outlet he could find. Thus began the downhill spiral.
As some of her cultists received the news that they were y’know… in a cult… they started leaving. Only the most loyal stayed with Quill on the compound. All except for one. Anna, who had fallen in love with the reporter. She had been the one giving Jack the inside scoop all this time, and now she was still betraying Quill. Quill was surprisingly none the wiser, as Anna had been one of her most trusted friends since high school. Or so she thought anyway.
It all culminated into being too much for Quill. After running a cult, and pulling the strings of the whole town for a little over 3 and half years, Quill made the decision to fake her death, and erase the cult. So she planned a gathering, where she secretly poisoned all of the drinks. Anna found this out, after having stolen Quill’s private journal to look for something to give to Jack. Anna whispered the truth in every cultist's ear, methodically gathering them all against Quill. Until the day came. Anna had been the one to pour the drinks, the poisoned ones anyway. Quill had already set hers aside with an excuse, but she had left it unattended for long enough that Anna swapped it with a poisoned one.
Quill took her place at the pulpit, holding her chalice up to her disloyal followers, and said a short speech. Ironically, thanking them for their loyalty. While she may have planned the deaths of her cultists, she did not want to do it. She had however realized her attachment to them was weakness, and she would burn that bridge down before it collapsed beneath her. When she raised her drink, and took a sip, it was mere seconds before she was clutching her throat. The cup fell to the floor with a clang, spilling the rest of its contents.
She collapsed to the floor, and Anna rushed to her, apologizing. In Quill’s final moments alive she had to listen to the traitor's sobs for forgiveness. As her eyes closed, she could hear nothing but ringing. When she opened them once more, she was where she knew she would always end up.

ZINESTERS AND SELF-PUBLISHING CARTOONISTS! YOU TOO CAN PRESENT YOUR WORK AT THE BILDERBERG KONFERENZ! There will be one big table where all the books will be displayed and sold. - When you arrive at the Konferenz just give yours to the friendly Bilderberger at the comics table and he or she will write down how many there are and how much they cost, and then sell them for you! - We don't ask for any percentage of sales, however we would be very happy if you could leave us one copy per zine to add to our "Bilderberg Archive". If your book is very costly or you only have very few issues we understand if that's not possible. - If you wish to sit down at a table and sell your comics yourself, there will probably be a few spots for that. Just be nice and don't occupy a table for too long and leave it to another zinester after an hour or two.

Never GIF up! (GIF-Programm Fantoche 2021 mit Live-Vertonung von Bit Tuner) from Fantoche on Vimeo.
EN The many-sided GIF programme is now a regular festival feature. Again, a series of outlandish, experimental and varied animated microfilms created by this free-spirited and dynamic online community will be set to live music and shown on the large Fantoche screen.
