I hand-knit the folklore cardigan so [with my v important pointers] you totally can, too!
Pattern
Taylor Swift's folklore the "Cardigan" by Lion Brand (free)
I have several qualms about this pattern, and though it’s easy to comprehend for the most part, I kind of hate it. But! I have tips below so that you can use this free pattern and OG cardigan reference pictures to make the perfect finished project. It’s also super easy actually even if you’ve never done cables or a large project before.
Materials (used as recommended by the pattern)
Needles: Takumi Clover US 9 (5.5 mm), 29" circular needles—My first time trying bamboo needles and this brand, I LOVED it. It made continental knitting so easy and fluid. I would recommend longer cables to make the button band part less stressful, and perhaps smaller diameter needles to make the ribbing prettier
Lion Brand Wool Ease: see rant below
Buttons: 3 1.25"-diameter La Mode buttons (there are prettier ones out there though they can get frighteningly expensive, pick what you like)
A summary of issues
the sizing runs very large
the button band (and, by extension, side panels) is all wrong for sizes other than S/M (the whole pattern is based aound S/M with suggested alterations for other sizes)
the arms turn out way too long for any size if you follow the instructions
the back cables (and possibly some others) are spaced distinctly differently from the OG folklore cardigan from Taylor’s site
the suggested yarn (Lion Brand Wool Ease) is scratchy on sensitive skin, stiff, thicker, more fuzzy than the folklore cardigan (and sheds a lot!), and stretches a lot which makes the cardigan larger than expected
Biggest tips (if you want to knit a cardigan similar to the OG)
CHECK YOUR GAUGE
measure yourself to pick size, and size down
find a bunch of pictures of the OG cardigan in the size that you want & count the stitches from the photos + graph the Lion Brand pattern, and compare before you begin
make alterations as needed
DO NOT BLIND BUY LION BRAND WOOL EASE
My best advice would be to just do a big guage swatch (as recommended on the pattern), run it through the wash, block it, measure it, plus assume that the cardigan will additionally stretch out on your body whenever worn. (Also if you’ve never knitted a garment before, the individual pieces absolutely look bigger once assembled and seamed than when they do on the needles while being knit.) The button band will add some width as well.
The button band is the current object of my misery. The cardigan fits like a cute tent, but the buttons beginning near my stomach is a no-go. I would definitely recommend double checking the spacing of the buttonholes on the button band because I kind of wish I’d altered them a little bit according to how I want the front to look. But then, the side panels would have to start slanting higher up towards the neck, so the whole neck should have been a smaller V. And I don’t have the heart to frog all the way back to to that. Still wondering if I should just shift the buttons higher and redo the button band, but I might just leave it as is and call it a day.
The recommended yarn is Lion Brand Wool-Ease, but actually I regret using it because it’s so stretchy and bulky, so the cardigan turned out a lot more chunky (and a lot more stretchy too I’m guessing) than the OG. I even found the finished measurements on the pattern misleading due to the cardigan stretching due to its own weight.
The pattern also calls for very long arms so I would advise just doing 4.5 diamonds for the back and then 4 diamonds for the arms, just like the OG! I thought 4 diamonds would be too short but the off-shoulder fit makes 5 diamonds incredibly long for me, and 4 would have been perfect!
I’m not sure why the instructions were that misleading with the sizing—Partly it’s me messing up with my guage, but I’m thinking it might also be because Lion Brand was basing it off the OG folklore cardigans from Taylor’s website, which I’ve heard run immensely large in a similar fashion. Still, I’m not sure exactly how the sizing compares to that of the XS/S and M/L OG cardigans
I usually am an S for perfectly fitted T shirts, and I get M sized crewnecks/hoodies for a perfect, comfy, borderline oversized fit that isn’t snug over layers. I was confused between knitting the S/M and L/XL because I wanted an oversized fit. I worried the S/M might be too snug and figured it was better to err on the side of it being a bit larger than expected because it’s still possible to style that, while a too-small cardigan would just be unwearable. But I think sizing down is the best way to go for that pattern and yarn if you’re picking between two sizes. The S/M pattern would probably produced something that fits more like a regular L/XL you would expect to see in a store.
Also, the yarn is fuzzy and pills a lot! It’s also slightly scratchy even after conditioning. So I would say just pick a durable yarn that creates a fabric that you love first before you start the project!
The Lion Brand pattern’s back cables are spaced slightly differently from the OG cardigans. (The OG had some moss stitched space between the two left cables on either end and the group of other cables in the center.) There might be other differences too. I know there are some other patterns out there you can pay for and they might be more accurate to the OG, but I would recommend simply looking up pictures of the OG cardigan in the size that you’re aiming for, and then taking note of the differences and making the alterations yourself! The stitches are fairly easy to count!
I have a breadth of regrets about this project (and some of it is just post-project blues, y’know?), but you live and you learn, folks! And I definitely learned a lot from this project. :) Will come back here and update once I add the (very expensive) silver star patches I’ve been procrastinating to buy because I’m so broke and so sad about how it turned out. I’m confident all the time I’ve spent on her will culminate in me surely falling in love with her soon enough. <3

Durkduct Flexible Air Ducting Solution for the Automotive Industry
Durkee textile air ductwork has been applied in the automotive plant since 2008, from industry benchmarks, foreign-invested factories to domestic-owned factories, and from OEM to other automotive accessories producers. So far, all major engineering projects or benchmark enterprises in automobile manufacturing plants have chosen Durkee flexible fabric air dispersion system. Durkee has a group of famous users worldwide, such as Volkswagen, General Motors, Ford, Renault, Fiat, Tesla, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, FAW, SAIC, GAC, Dongfeng, and Geely, etc.
By 2015, all automobile manufacturing industry projects only used Nanosox fabric ducts as the secondary air supply duct with unique properties, such as low space position line or spot air supply for energy-saving, environmental protection, easy installation, and oil resistance, etc. Since 2016, the insulated fabric air duct, which is the unique research and development of Durkee, has been fully promoted in the market.
It has been successfully applied as the primary air supply duct system for automobile manufacturing plants, including Jiangling, General Motors, Faurecia, FAW Toyota, BAIC, Ford, Dongfeng Honda, Geely, GAC Honda, and other projects.
Advantages of insulated fabric duct
Compared with commonly used traditional GI ducts, the advantages of the insulated fabric duct are more obvious:
Lightweight, faster installation
The insulated fabric ducting solution has a 100% factory prefabrication rate and on-site modular assembly, which is light in weight, requiring only slide bars or cable suspension, with zipper connection, greatly improving the quality of the project, shortening the construction period, and reducing the overall cost of the project.
Double insulation layer increases thermal insulation performance
The insulated fabric duct is composed of duct layer, an insulation layer, and an outer insulation layer, achieving a dual-layer insulation effect.
The integral composite insulation material has an infinite vapor resistance factor, which can effectively prevent water vapor penetration, maintain the initial thermal conductivity coefficient, and have a better insulation performance. The thermal resistance value is comprehensively improved. The Durkee fabric duct can effectively reduce cold and heat loss during the air transmission process.
High strength and pressure resistance performance
Different from the easy shearing and pressure deformation of rectangular metal ducts, the insulated fabric duct system adopts circular and elliptical shapes.
The insulated fabric duct can reasonably convert internal pressure into transverse tensile force on the duct wall, which can withstand 3000Pa-5000Pa or more pressure, far higher than the applicable range of traditional ducts below 2000Pa.
The insulated fabric duct system has been successfully applied in more and more primary air supply duct systems and return air duct systems. Durkee has become the leading supplier in the global fabric duct industry with a full range of professional solutions.

19 Dec 2022: What if shops didn’t sell things?
Hail and farewell
This is the last Co-op Digital newsletter. It has had an excellent and enjoyable run, thank you to everyone who helped get it going with decisions, everyone who kept it going with content, and everyone who read it. We’ve been wrapping up with 3 questions. Previously: more radical membership and more than a shop?
Thank you all for reading and sending ideas. The Co-op story continues on the magnificent Co-op Digital blog. Rod will still be writing about climate change and carbon transformation at Holdfast and about money at Checksies. See you there?
What if shops didn’t sell things?
Supermarkets and many other types of retail businesses are often high volume/tight margin machines, looking to increase volume and find small gains and complementary products and services with higher margins. Will this always be the case?
As climate change bites into the world, making it less predictable, will the cost and availability of materials change the dynamic for retail? Do supply chains fracture? Will managing the entire lifecycle of products and packaging add cost that makes retail unviable, or will it unlock new business? Can shopping fit into circular economies if recycling and reuse becomes central? What if shops bought things from you, instead of selling them to you?
2040
Aya looks the length of the warehouse. There’s a haze in the distance where the unfactory starts and above the superstructure is barely visible behind the ambient dayglow. A city inside a building.
She pulls the door shut on her housing unit and walks to the bus stop. There’s only a couple of minutes to wait before a driverless bus pulls up. These carbon grey boxes crawl the building, patiently looping between the different work, housing and leisure zones.
Aya gets on the bus and sits. Her glasses immediately pop up an interactive about hitting this month’s KPIs. With a glance she flicks it away, and looks the other way to access shopping. A carousel of plaid shirts flickering across the field of view, partly obscuring the view out of the window of apartment blocks, terraced 2-up 2-downs, community centres, and behind her in the distance parkland and the executive mcmansions. Aya considers buying a shirt that says 2005 and has all the confidence of that era. The checkout dances and says: “Hey you know you could put that 229.50 into something more long term? Say Pension to put it to work for you.” Aya sighs, shuts her eyes and whispers “Cancel”, the UI an afterimage in reversed colours.
Aya steps off the bus at the warehousing zone and passes through two layers of perimeter security: ID badge and then a tongue print which performs ID verification and a recreational drugs test. Now she is matter-side. She steps through the air wall into a cavernous space: kilometres of racking, ducting, assembly areas, disassembly areas, recycling, storage, cabling, transport, uncountable shelves of racking and gigantic bays of raw material.
10 years ago, at peak shopping, this building was Amazon’s largest fulfilment centre, the entire building performing inventory, pick and pack - all of it heading into cardboard boxes, out the loading bays and to everyone’s home via the Amazon-only lanes on the motorways.
Since then, the building has grown and evolved in response to 15 years of carbon budgets and circular economy targets. The shadow of the smile logo is still faintly visible on the wall. The work is now two-way: they’re doing as much inbound for recycling as they do outbound retail: the increasing value of material feedstocks made disassembly and recycling higher margin businesses. Across the way, building crews are pulling out the pick and pack racking, and hauling in more recyc stations.
Conveyor belts of toys, consumer goods, electronics, plastic items, everything. Some things are automatically sorted, separated by size or material type into smaller flows on smaller conveyors, a river delta. The metal goes off along a conveyor to be remelted in a distant area. The plastic is ripped apart into uncountable white-edged grains of feed stock.
Further away, and behind more layers of security, are the goop vats where the synthetic bio voodoo happens. There’s a smell of ammonia and long chain polymers everywhere, which the air ducting cannot ever remove entirely.
Here though, the river belt meanders through rows of stations, where human-robot pairs work next to each other, pulling objects off the main belt and moving them to several smaller tributary belts for onward sorting.
Aya walks up to the only unstaffed station. A fixed robot is at the wide conveyor belt. Its body is a 7-axis spine of rotatable stainless steel segments that look more like muscles than components. Its arm ends in an array of cameras, lidar sensors and rubber tipped and suction manipulators. Around the robot is a 2 metre no-go zone hashed out in hazard orange. It has placed several objects in that space around its base. A Casio watch. A christmas tree toy. A clown painting on black velvet. Lego pieces.
The supervisor approaches and shrugs at Aya: “You make it work, if you can. I in’t going near it though…” Aya swipes her badge into the work station. The robot’s arm monitors everything that passes on the belt under it, occasionally twitching as if indecisive. But it is not moving and not sorting items.
Aya watches the belt for a while and reaches out to pick up an old lunch box in blue and red plastic. She shows it to the robot, and then with great care Aya places it on the floor, inside the no-go zone, and steps back. The robot’s arm bends, the array inspecting the lunchbox for several seconds.
Then it straightens, moves back over the belt, and starts grabbing objects and sorting them.

Knit Me Sew Me Crafting Cozy Chic - A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Knitted Hats for Women
Knit Me Sew Me, the artisanal haven for crafting enthusiasts, brings you a delightful step-by-step guide to fashioning knitted hats for women. With a perfect blend of warmth and style, these hats are a winter must-have. Follow our detailed instructions, and in no time, you'll be flaunting your handcrafted creation with pride.
Gather Your Materials
Before diving into this creative journey, assemble all the necessary materials. You'll need soft and vibrant yarn in your favorite colors, knitting needles, scissors, a tape measure, and a yarn needle. Choose high-quality yarn to ensure the final product is not only beautiful but also durable. Knit Me Sew Me offers a wide selection of premium materials for your project, making your experience a truly enjoyable one.
Select the Perfect Pattern
With the materials in hand, it's time to choose a pattern that suits your style. Knit Me Sew Me provides an assortment of patterns, ranging from simple designs to intricate textures. For beginners, a basic ribbed hat pattern can be a great start, while seasoned crafters may opt for a cabled or Fair Isle pattern to challenge their skills. Browse our collection and find the perfect pattern that speaks to you.
Cast On and Begin Knitting
Once you have your materials and pattern, it's time to cast on the stitches. Follow the pattern instructions for the required number of stitches, and then begin knitting the brim of the hat. Knit Me Sew Me recommends using circular needles for a seamless finish. As you progress, watch the hat take shape and revel in the joy of creating something unique.
Add Intricate Details
To add a touch of flair to your knitted hat, consider incorporating intricate details like pom-poms, braids, or even a fold-up brim. These subtle embellishments can elevate the overall look and make your hat truly one-of-a-kind. Knit Me Sew Me offers a variety of accessories and adornments that will add charm and personality to your creation.
Bind Off and Finishing Touches
As your hat reaches its desired length, follow the pattern's instructions to bind off the stitches. Secure any loose ends and weave in the yarn tails using a yarn needle. This step ensures a polished appearance and adds durability to your hat. Now, it's time to try on your masterpiece and make any adjustments if necessary.
Conclusion
Congratulations! With the expert guidance of Knit Me Sew Me, you've successfully crafted a stunning knitted hat for women. Whether you keep it for yourself or gift it to a loved one, the warmth and love sewn into each stitch will surely be cherished for years to come. Happy knitting!

Framework for NASA's Roman spacecraft moves to Goddard clean room The primary structure that will serve as the "bones" of NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has moved into the big clean room at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. The spacecraft bus, Roman's primary support element, will now be built upon this skeletal framework. When it launches by May 2027, Roman will help unravel the secrets of dark energy and dark matter, search for and image exoplanets, and explore many topics in infrared astrophysics. "This is a milestone several years in the making," said Caroline Griffin, a mechanical engineer at Goddard. "The Roman team carefully assembled nearly 2,000 individual components, many of them custom-designed by Goddard engineers, to create this structure." It's partly made up of a central cylinder with a top deck that will support most of the observatory. Each of its six sides has a compartment that will house key electronics and other hardware needed to operate the observatory. Major spacecraft elements, such as its power, attitude control, and propulsion systems, will be housed within the primary structure. The high-gain antenna will be installed beneath it, and the lowermost part of the primary structure will attach the spacecraft to the rocket during launch. The structure is mainly made of a special grade of aluminum that's strong, yet lightweight. To reduce the weight even further, most of its exterior is partly hollowed out in a triangular pattern called an isogrid. Even though it's large—about 14 feet (4.3 meters) long, 12 feet (3.7 meters) wide, and 6.5 feet (2 meters) tall—the primary structure weighs just 3,600 pounds (1,600 kilograms). Engineers applied a protective coating to protect it from the environment on Earth and provide the right temperature profile in space. The team has also performed fit checks, ensuring all the components are precisely positioned so additional parts will connect together properly. The primary structure has now been placed on the Pantheon—a large assembly platform built specifically for Roman. The team is lacing it with the harness, which serves as the spacecraft's nervous system, and will connect the electronics together in June of 2023. IMAGE....Roman's primary structure hangs from cables as it moves into the big clean room at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. Its exterior has six sides, each covered with a diamond-like pattern. The structure is about 14 feet (4.3 meters) long, 12 feet (3.7 meters) wide, and 6.5 feet (2 meters) tall and hangs from long yellow cables. Three people in bunny suits look on in the foreground.
