Now I wish merely for a way to tell you not by hearsay, face to face, that I will surely give up my thoughts of you.
今はただ思ひ絶えなむとばかりを人づてならで言ふよしもがな
Ima wa tada / omoitaenan / to bakari wo / hito-zute narade / ifu yoshi mogana
An inevitable and final farewell. Makes me think just how devastating the poem could be in Chihayafuru.
Hyakunin Isshu 63: Fujiwara no Michimasa (as always, link to the poem analysis is in the notes below)

Oh, this brings me back, because I actually know this poem. It is one of my favorite poems from the Hyakunin Isshu, which I discovered thanks to Uta Koi:
Tumblr media
The eps where they tell the story behind the poem is one of my favorites eps too (this particular poem is in eps 7). Go watch the anime if you’re interested!

Anime I’ve Watched
Okay, here’s this massive post!
My roomie/best friend, Amanda, has gotten me into watching new anime as it comes out every season. We’ve been doing this since college, either 8 or 9 years ago, and it’s accumulated in a crapton of shows that we’ve watched. Obviously I’ve liked some more than others, and I can’t remember every single show I’ve watched, and with so many to list, it’s hard to think of shows I’ve seen when people ask me.
So I’m going to use this as a way to track all the shows I’ve watched!
I’m going to list shows that I’ve seen more than just a few episodes of. There are a ton of shows I’ve started watching, but then quit. Those aren’t going to count here.
Also, I’m going to use the titles I’m used to, so there will likely be a lot of Japanese titles of shows that I’ve noticed are more popular with the English title. I honestly don’t know the English title of some of them. XD;; It’s just how I’ve watched them. I will add akas where there is more than one version of the title.
I’ve watched all of these in Japanese, unless I specify that I watched it in English. The first few shows I watched in my life were in English, and so I tend to only watch those in English even now, but now I’m a Japanese snob and refuse to watch dubs. XD

So I just started watching Chouyaku Hyakuninisshu: Uta Koi
First impressions:
Oh, it’s an anime based on that traditional japanese 100 poems series… Why does that sound familiar _
Hmm, a ‘super liberal interpreta-’ what do they mean by that… _
Oh, the narrator seems to be talking normally _
Pfft… Yup… As cheesy as they are, I am also a sucker for ol’ love compositions… _
OooOooOoo Ikemen and bishoujos~ ah, but these are not how the real figures the poems are based on look like… Oh well… _
Wait a sec _
Ka-ka-ka-KAARUTAAAA!!!! _
Oh, maybe I should watch Chihayafuru back and forth with this
_
… So if I’m interested in learning karuta, I can use this as a reference _
WOW, THIS IS PG-13 (according to a certain website?) I AM OVER OVER 13 AND MY HEART’S BEATING LIKE A TIME BOMB _
… No way, no way this is PG-13… It’s at least josei right? Seinen??? _
Gosh, I swear. I am a ripe red tomato _
I’M READY FOR MORE STEAM(!)-y no ecchii but romantic, suave moments hyuu hyuu~
Bring it on Mr. Teika!

Chouyaku hyakunin isshu: Uta koi
I‘ve finally been able to watch this anime (very loosely) inspired by Ogura Hyakunin Isshu (a famous poems antology karuta cards are based on).
This anime focuses on famous uta koi (love poems) with one couple by episode. Some storylines where nicely depicted, some quite disapointing. The whole serie truly lack unity but still, I think it’s worth having a look if you are interested in Heian court culture ;)
I’ve especially enjoyed seeing the poems written as they were delivered. The example above is by Ono no Komachi :
Hana no iro wa (color of the flower) Utsuri ni keri na (has already faded away) Itazura ni (while in idle thoughts) Waga mi yo ni furu (my life passes vainly by) Nagame seshi ma ni (as I watch the long rains fall)
The full antology is available online (ex. here).
On a side note, Heian “romantic” behaviors were... quite pushy. If you are interested in the subject, you can have a look at this article which is a good place to start.
Anyway this anime has made me want to re-read again Liza Dalby’s Tale of Murasaki (I love this book!).

For you, even this life of mine, I thought not precious, I realised I wish it was everlasting!
君がため惜しからざりし命さへ長くもがなと思ひけるかな
Kimi ga tame / oshikarazarishi / inochi sae / nagaku mogana to / omoikeru kana
Maybe it is the appeal at the reader right from the first kimi ga tame − for your sake, − the poem just tugs at the heartstrings. And then there’s the story of the author himself. I’m beyond beaten, but I hope the post is at least a tiny bit enjoyable.
Hyakunin Isshu 50: Fujiwara no Yoshitaka (as always, link to the poem analysis is in the notes below)

Chouyaku Hyakunin Isshu: Uta Koi and Chihayafuru
They work really good together, they help each other :)
Uta Koi should catch up with Chihayafuru so that I could understand the cards better (I honestly don't understand Kana's interpretation :| )
HEHE :D
