Science Saturday
We had a patron come in this week to do some research with the Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion (MSHWR) and we were impressed by the range of image reproduction techniques represented. The six volumes contain etchings and wood engravings, multi-colored charts and graphs, lithographs and chromolithographs, as well as multiple types of photographic reproduction (including heliotype and albumen photographs). I’ve taken the liberty of sharing some of the less gruesome images but encourage those with a morbid sense of curiosity to give us a visit and see for yourself!
Published in Washington D.C. over nearly two decades by the United States Government Printing Office (which underwent a name change 2014 to the Government Publishing Office), the MSHWR was issued in three parts, with each part consisting of a Medical and Surgical volume. Both the Medical and Surgical volumes of Part 1 were first published in 1870, with the final installment coming in 1888. Both of our Part 1 volumes are from the second printing in 1875, while the volumes from Part 2 and 3 are first printings. Production of the first five volumes was overseen by Surgeon General Joseph K Barnes. The surgical volumes were compiled by George A. Otis. The first two medical volumes were compiled by J. J. Woodward, well known internationally as a pioneer in micrography. Both Barnes and Woodward passed away before the completion of the work, and Charles Smart took over for Woodward under the direction of the new Surgeon General, John Moore.
This monumental work documents clinical records, surgical reports, case reports, and statistical reports on both battlefield injuries and camp diseases in both the Union and Confederate Army during the Civil War. The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) considers it “among the most remarkable works ever composed on military medicine and surgery” and that it is likely “the country’s earliest comprehensive medical monograph.” Not only is it a leading source of medical data from the time period, but the inclusion of case studies and surgical reports, with both patient and surgeon named, has made the MSHWR an important resource for personal histories and genealogical research. As noted, the array of image reproduction techniques also make it great point of reference for those with an interest in the history of printing.

A Christmas Carol (1984)
There are many adaptations of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol to choose from for your Holiday Christmas marathon. Many consider this 1984 version by Clive Donner the one to go with. If you ask me, no Christmas season is complete without viewing either Alastair Sim or George C. Scott as Ebenezer Scrooge.
Ebenezer Scrooge (Scott) is a bitter miser who considers the ideals and spirit of Christmas pure humbug. He hesitates to give his underpaid assistant Bob Cratchit (David Warner) the day off and scoffs at his nephew Fred (Roger Rees) when he suggests a holiday dinner. One cold Christmas Eve, the ghost of Scrooge's former partner Jacob Marley (Frank Finlay) appears to him with a warning "You will soon be visited by three spirits, heed their counsel and change your ways or risk an eternity of suffering."
Though originally made for television, this is a top-notch production. The locations/sets transport you to 1843 London like a Ghost of Christmas Past and the costumes all look authentic. The stage is set and George C. Scott is perfect for his role. One look at the actor and you can practically see every time he's rolled his eyes at the concept of charity. He delivers the over-the-top dialogue like it was written for him but Scott also grounds the story in reality. It makes the drama that follows that much more powerful. Scrooge is a miserable, horrible person… but he’s still a person. His journey through the many Christmases the ghosts take him through rouses intense emotions.
So much of what makes this story endure is the message. Christmas is a joyous time, but it can be scary under certain lights. That uniformly white blanket over everything, the bare branches swaying in the frigid wind, the shortening days, the cold… the idea of ghosts emerging from the darkness just fits. These fears are juxtaposed by this renewed hope of salvation, the explosion of generosity and the potential for miracles. A Christmas Carol taps into all of those sentiments. There are talks of gifts but no commercialism. It’s about the importance of relationships with loved ones and what you must do to keep them close to you. That's not to say any adaptation is a hit; the cast and the production's dedication make this a special rendition of the timeless story.
There’s only one flaw with the film: the portrayal of the Spirit of Christmas Past by Angela Pleasence. It isn’t her performance; it’s that unless you know what the movie is trying to do, she'll leave you scratching your head. She’s supposed to be candle-like: a light that could easily be put out (which is why we see Scrooge extinguish her with his cap). You can't tell unless you already know. Otherwise, everything you want to see in this story is there. The comedy of a miser so cheap he won’t even spend money to keep himself comfortable, the drama over lost love and seeing a heart grow cold, the warmth of redemption and the horror of the ghosts. As a child, I distinctly remember seeing the Ghost of Christmas Present (Edward Woodward) showing off Scrooge’s “children” to him and finding it terrifying.
It’s easy to become bitter around Christmas. Even if you don’t feel like the true meaning of the holiday has eroded, there’s so much pressure and so many high expectations that are rarely met. 1984's A Christmas Carol is the perfect remedy for any bitter sentiments. Whether you see yourself as Ebenezer Scrooge and need to be shown the error of your ways or you’re his nephew and need your faith in others renewed, this is the movie for you. Its final scene always brings tears to my eyes. (December 14, 2020)

The following year Joanne Woodward won the Oscar for THE THREE FACES OF EVE, and the two posed with their loot.

William Hootkins in the 1970s.
William Hootkins was born in Texas in 1948. He was active in theater in High School and at Princeton University and interested in becoming a professional actor after graduating. His his friend John Lithgow recommended he move to England to continue his acting education, probably because he knew he'd get greater opportunities. So he moved to England in the 1970s and trained at The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He continued mainly in theater and took film roles when he could. His first film role was a small role as a henchman in the British R rated film, Big Zapper in 1973.
Big Zapper, 1973. Small role and Hootkins would've been 24-25 years old during filming.
Anthology series Plays for Britain. Hootkins gets a small role in the episode The Paradise Run in 1976.
An anthology Documentary series, Horizon, which featured film adaptations of real-life events. Hootkins had a greater role in this 1976 offering Billion Dollar Bubble which starred James Woods about Insurance Company fraud in the early years of computers.
Still in his 20s, Hootkins got a small role in a major American film directed by Robert Aldrich and the opportunity to share a scene with Charles Durning, Twilight's Last Gleaming in 1977.
Also in 1977, Hootkins played Porkins in a small role in the 1977 blockbuster Star Wars. Small role but big enough to get his own action figure.
And again in 1977, Hootkins worked with Director Ken Russell in Valentino in a high energy scene of a drunken, egotistical silent film star. The movie was a bomb mainly because it wasn't the biopic of Rudolph Valentino that people expected. Russell took too much license in the life of Valentino to tell a more interesting story. I think what was known of the real lives of stars back then was greatly what the studio wanted to present to the public. So I think Russell was justified.
1977 was an especially good year for William Hootkins. The above photos are from a US-UK collaboration of a teleplay version of Come Back, Little Sheba starring Laurence Olivier and Joanne Woodward. Hootkins is in one scene only. Also in 1977, Hootkins appeared in episodes of British TV series, Van der Volk, Yanks Go Home, Plum's Plots and Plans and Documentary Series, The Lively Arts.
In 1978. Hootkins appeared in Part 1 of Clouds of Glory, a 2-part series of the lives of Poets, William Wordsworth and Samuel T Coleridge. Hootkins appeared with David Warner.
Late 1978, now William Hootkins is 30 years old and no denying the hair loss. He appears in all 3 episodes of the British miniseries The Lost Boys, about Peter Pan writer J. M. Barrie starring Ian Holm, presenting Barrie as homosexual and a pedophile (at least only in his mind). Hootkins plays Barrie's American friend, Broadway and London Theater Producer Charles Frohman.
Hootkins appeared in one episode of British 13-part miniseries Lillie, the story of Lillie Langtry in 1978.
In 1979, Hootkins appeared in Hanover Street as Beef with Harrison Ford.
Also in 1979, he played a very small role in a remake of The Lady Vanishes with Cybill Shepherd and Angela Lansbury.

Where did the myth of "Australia" come from? I've heard many stories about that place but what are the origins of that legend?
Australia, or "North Tasmania," was first proposed by explorer Chris Columbus (no relation) in 1770. Many explorers died attempting to locate the island, and so many ships and bodies piled up that they formed a great barrier reef. In 1901, Captain John Green (no relation) found the great barrier reef and named it "The Great Barrier Reef" because Green was not a creative colonialist.
Around the same time however, Captain Woodward "Woody" Allen (no relation) discovered the island of West New Zealand. As Zealand itself in Denmark was itself only a few years old, and was farther west than the island, Allen named it "Slightly Newer Less West Zealand," the initials of which became the acronym, "Australia." Linguists are not sure how this works but as Allen was British and we still don't know what language was spoken in Britain in the 1700s, the words may well have worked out.
So the legend of Australia was born, and Britain immediately began exiling its worst criminals there, including Al Capone (no relation), Charles Manson (no relation), and Donald Trump (the same). Landing in Botany Bay (named for a location in Star Trek), the criminals began subjugating, abusing, and terrorizing the people who already lived there, as was the tradition at the time, through history, currently, and in the future.
Australia, despite its origin as a myth, is now a thriving country whose national anthem is a song about a homeless man drowning in a puddle.
