House of Thieves by Charles Belfoure
Genre: Historical Fiction, Fiction, Mystery
Rating: ★★★★☆
WARNINGS: Gambling, torture, sex, and death.
Summary: John Cross and his family are members of 1886 New York high society. But everyone in society has their own secrets. For the architect Cross, it's his eldest son’s obscenely high gambling debt to Mr. Kent, the most famous crime boss in the city. Cross’s options are this: let his son be killed by Kent and his men or join their team. Cross soon becomes a valuable asset to the team and he finds himself in a whole new world he never would have imagined.
Review:
The concept of this book is so unique and captivating and it made for a really good read. Personally, it has all of the “tropes” that I love, including heists, crime, and high society. I’m really a sucker for danger.
I was first drawn to this book because it vaguely reminded me of Six of Crows, which is obviously one of my favorite books. However, after finishing the book I realized just how much the two resembled each other. This book also gives me major Peaky Blinders vibes if you’ve ever watched that (highly recommend). There are so many parallels that I’ve noticed between the two.
Some of the characters were more bland than others, which is why I rated it 4 stars. I wouldn’t say there was bad writing, just some characters got more representation than others. I would have loved to see more in-depth looks into some lives.

The Paris Architect by Charles Belfoure
Books I’ve Read in 2020 (41/?)
It had all been an illusion, Lucien knew. The buildings, the arches, the sweeping, graceful lines. All this time he had been worshipping a facade of concrete and glass.

WWW Wednesday December 23
It’s Wednesday, so it’s time to take a look at what I’ve read, what I’m reading, and what I’m planning on reading. The Three Ws are: What are you currently reading? What did you recently finish reading? What do you think you’ll read next? It’s been a week of quarantine here with my oldest daughter testing positive for the virus. So far, no one else has displayed symptoms, and luckily my…

Book 25 of 2019: The Paris Architect
The Paris Architect by Charles Belfoure
This was a new book I had picked up at my Barnes and Noble run earlier this summer and I read it in two days under the lifeguard desk at my summer job. This was a really interesting historical fiction novel that explored a kind of moral gray area during the time of WWII in France. Parisian architect Lucien Bernard had a keen eye for design and is in need of money now that Paris is Nazi-occupied and the war is in full swing. He tends to avoid thinking about the messier parts of the war and doesn't associate himself with either side. However, when he is asked to design a new German factory nearby, he jumps at the opportunity for a hefty sum of money in his pocket. Soon after he accepts the job, he is approached by a man trying hiding a Jewish couple in his home - who also offers him a large amount of money. So Lucien accepts. Eventually he designs more and more hiding spaces for hidden Jewish people, creating a sort of game out of making hidey-holes almost in plain sight. He wants to refuse, but something in him forces him to continue designing these spaces. Though he originally had decided he was a neutral party in the war, he ends up growing more affected by the plight of the Jewish people he is helping, going to extreme lengths to personally aide them when he never wanted to risk his neck by association before. This novel is about changing morals and quiet heroism; how far a person would go to help others and the secret lives people live behind closed doors.
I really enjoyed the plotline on this one, and Lucien goes from being a spoiled and morally gray character to being intensely invested in the charade of German support to protect people he has come to feel responsible for. He shows great character growth, even as he loses so much. He comes to have a conscience, and does more than he ever considered doing in the past. Great story, interesting and dynamic characters, and a fascinating premise - plus awesome development and interesting descriptions of the architectural feats Lucien pulls off. Overall I just really enjoyed it.
Trigger warnings for mentions/descriptions of the Holocaust, Nazis/Nazi ideas and propaganda, racism, character death, descriptions/mentions of sex, and descriptions of Nazi raids.
My final opinion: Such a compelling story wrapped up in a heart-wrenching historical time period.

The Paris Architect by Charles Belfoure. 7.4/10
Amazing that I understand some art references.
Honestly, if I were doing something this dangerous, I would be so careful. (as if I’d survive lol) I would talk in like code and like hide everything in some quarters that can’t be tracked to me. Like, how could Bernard get caught by his own hiree.
My idea: sliding walls inside walls.
Why do architects and artists always compare themselves and think themselves better in whatever ways?
Lucien’s arrogance and ignorance that arose when Bette wouldn’t let him into her home is just fucking bullshit. I hate men.
Alright, tell me. WHAT do you look like to get the attention of that many men at once?
I knew about Herzog all along.
Memorable Quotes: “What was the use of praying for happiness anyway?” “It’s amazing how our lives are dictated by accident.” “Lucien, do you remember Bette? My right–and left hand.” “he wondered if they found solace in their books in bad times like these or whether they were always lost in their world of scholarship.” “he’d finally become something he’d always wanted to be–a father–and best of all, he’d been good at it.”
Spoiler: [About Lucien, a French architect building factories for the Germans during the Occupation. As a side gig, he helps create hiding places in home for the Jews to be in and go on unnoticed by the Germans. He worked for the Germans to get his dream of having beautiful structures made permanently by him and he helped the Jews to make more money. It eventually changed as he is partially involved with one his hidden spaces in a fireplace goes wrong and the fire kills the Jews alive. He realizes they are human and does what he can to help. He also ends up taking in a orphaned kid named Pierre who he really loves and also teaches him a lot about architecture. While creating the German factories, Lucien hires a boy named Alain. They both strongly detest each other but Alain is rather architecturally capable and is needed. Alain suspects of Lucien’s side job and makes it his mission to reveal it. Pierre is aware of Alain’s suspicions and wants to stop it. Lucien’s wife, Celeste, leaves him, his has a mistress, Adele, who no longer is interested and is more interested in the Gestapo, and he falls in love with Adele’s work partner, Bette, who is also harboring children. Shlegal, a German officer, is intent on finding Janusky, one of the wealthiest Jews that the Germans are looking for, so it can allow him to be favored and become a general. He is also looking for whomever is creating these genius hiding places. Herzog is one of the Germans who has a high architectural knowledge and is very friendly with Lucien.]

The Fabergé Secret is the year's first disappointment
The Fabergé Secret is the year’s first disappointment
I read Charles Belfoure’s first novel and loved it. I read his second novel and thought it was okay. I skipped his third novel because I thought it was too similar to his previous ones. When I saw that he transferred his focus to Imperial Russia, I knew I had to read The Fabergé Secret. Except, now I wish I had avoided it. Simply, The Fabergé Secret is not good. The first thing that strikes you…

Personal Background:
I like to think I am pretty open minded and I love to receive questions/Thirsts. I might be slow on doing written requests, but I am always happy to talk!
I have been writing and roleplaying since I was a preteen, so I have been at both for more than 10 years. I have seen and read most of my life regarding fanfiction, so I’m pretty open to all types of fanfics. I’ve been in many fandoms both small and large, toxic and quiet.
I work full time and I am going to school part time. I also have a nearly 9 month old Husky(August 2021), so I often get busy. I'm someone who grew up in an abusive household so I have always used fanfiction, books, roleplay, and fandoms to escape and as I got older it became a fun hobby and quite a passion. So, I just have fun with writing when I can.
I'm pretty open if you want to ask me any questions about my life, if you want to send me Thirsts/kink smut requests. I'm from the old days of literotica, Wattpad, Fanfiction.net, MM.org, and I am on AO3.
I've also written a lot for crossovers in the past for older fandoms such as Fruits Basket, Inuyasha, OHSHC, Yu Yu Hakusho, etc.
Also, I love getting book recommendations. So if you ever have something you want to recommend, let me know.
Tumblr media
My favorite books/recommendations are:
Jurassic Park and The Lost World by Michael Crichton
Partials Sequence (Partials, Fragments, Ruins, Isolation) by Dan Wells
Under the Dome by Stephen King (Tw: Racism, Drug Use, Necrophilia, Sexual Assault, Violence, Murder, etc.)
Caraval by Stephanie Garber (There are two sequels, Legendary and Finale, though I do not like them as much as first book)
One of us is Lying, Two can keep a Secret, and The Cousins by Karen M. McManus (One of us is Lying has a sequel called One of us is Next. Again, I did not like it as much as the first book)
The Paris Architect by Charles Belfoure
The Escape Room by Megan Goldin
Tumblr media
Current Fandoms:
Obey Me!
Genshin Impact
Attack on Titan
Former Fandoms:(I still occasionally write for these, so if requests are open, feel free to request/discuss)
Fairy Tail
Inuyasha
Miraculous Ladybug
Yu Yu Hakusho
Naruto
My Hero Academia
The 100
Caraval
Partials
MLQC
Ikemen Series
Tears of Themis
And more, just ask.
OC:
I have a wide variety of OC that I use for roleplays or original short stories, but my main two I use are. If anyone wants to know about them, feel free to send an ask.

ARC Review: The Fabergé Secret by Charles Belfoure
I just got done with an ARC of a really good historical fiction book about Russia in the years leading up to the revolution. #amazon #netgalley #arc #bookreview #thefabergesecret #charlesbelfoure #russianhistory #tsarnicholasII #bargainsleuth
It’s not just the British royal family that captures my interest. I also have a passing interest in Russian History and the Russian Revolution. So I was happy to pick up the historical fiction novel The Fabergé Secret (Amazon) from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion. The book’s release date is January 5, 2021. (more…)
