O’Rowe’s THE APPROACH Isn’t Quite Reaching Us
O’Rowe’s THE APPROACH Isn’t Quite Reaching Us
By Perry Tannenbaum It’s tempting to declare Mark O’Rowe’s new play, THE APPROACH, a retro or even misogynistic drama. Now in its US premiere at Spoleto Festival USA through June 12, from the Dublin-based Landmark Productions, O’Rowe’s elegantly circular piece – which he himself directs – does little to push against the stereotyped notion that women chatter endlessly about their men, their…

The Princess of Wales has a new private secretary. According to Roya Nikkhah, Catherine has hired public relations specialist Alison Corfield, who used to work for Jamie Oliver.
Alison Corfield, who masterminded Jamie Oliver’s childhood obesity and free school meals campaigns, will join the palace as Kate’s right-hand woman and most senior aide this month.
Described as “loud” and “persuasive” by those who know her, Corfield’s appointment has been hailed by royal insiders as a “breath of fresh air”. It is understood the princess actively sought out a “different kind of courtier” as she steps up her public work.
Corfield will replace Hannah Cockburn-Logie, a diplomat with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, who left the role last autumn after 2½ years in post.
Known as “Al” to her friends, Corfield, 51, a mother of three and former air stewardess, worked as Oliver’s head of campaigns from 2015 to 2020. She led the marketing strategy for his drive to halve childhood obesity by 2030, improve food education in schools and create “a generational shift in young people’s health”.
She has continued to work with Oliver on his free school meals campaign, and has also advised the Irish television chef Clodagh McKenna.
The prince and princess’s aides have traditionally been recruited from government departments and the civil service, including William’s last private secretary, Sir Simon Case, who was David Cameron’s principal private secretary in Downing Street and is now the cabinet secretary. William’s current private secretary, Jean-Christophe Gray, is described by Whitehall sources as “the model of a mandarin”, and previously worked with several former chancellors including Rishi Sunak, George Osborne and Gordon Brown.
A royal source said: “Alison is an unusual fit. She is a bit out there for Kensington Palace, but there is a move to recruit more modernisers and people with private sector experience, not just civil servants. She will run rings around the courtiers and shake things up a bit.”
A royal source who knows Corfield, said: “She will be a massive breath of fresh air at Kensington Palace. She is loud, tons of fun and full of energy and enthusiasm.”
Corfield has also worked with the Labour MP Stella Creasy on her recent MotheRED campaign to recruit more mothers as Labour politicians.
Corfield will take on the role as the princess’s private secretary as Kate, 41, significantly steps up her public profile and work. Last week, she launched a new long-term campaign, Shaping Us, to raise public awareness on the importance of early childhood development.

saw the "who's your most underrated Kleypas hero" question getting bandied about (again) today, and I must say, the only answers I'll accept are:
--John McKenna/Again the Magic (I'd argue that AtM is not the DEEP CUT newer Kleypas readers think it is; before I read it, it was definitely upheld as a classic of hers, but people who want the softer boys she writes in the Ravenels... may not like this one; however, McKenna fucks RIDICULOUS lbr)
--Alex, Lord Raiford/Then Came You (yes... he calls her a bitch.... and I'll be real this made me love him more... he carried her over his shoulder outta Craven's and bought her a bear I'm VERY confident in this choice)
--Kev Merripen/Seduce Me at Sunrise (thought he'd kill Win with his massive dick, tied her up and took her to his fuck cottage, is Heathcliff if Heathcliff wasn't horrible basically)
--Leo Hathaway/Married by Morning (fun bout wounded king, "haha" in the streets and "oh shit" in the sheets, notable for making Catherine ask him to touch her pussy in explicit and specific language)
#romance novel blogging#besides rhys winterborne............ ravenel heroes are kinda mid! i'll be honest!#'but what of five feelings tom' his book bored me i'll try it again someday#west ravenel is the greatest disappointment of my life#gabriel and keir struggled under the weight of their father's slutty slutty legacy#devon was fine. but only fine.#don't even talk to me about ethan#mostly bc i don't remember a single defining feature#i just think the ravenels is a perfectly fine series#but to me it is truly dumbed down kleypas#it's kleypas for people who can't handle sebastian kidnapping lillian#or derek craven fucking that sex worker#or derek craven doing a minor stranglehold on a very bad lady#or alex calling lily a bitch (THERE ARE REASONS)#or kev refusing to take responsibility for tittygate bc he was very down on himself and also bc his dick might kill her#or mckenna spending literal years plotting aline's downfall lmao#leo is honestly p normal but he WAS a sad alcoholic!!!#(never mind westcliff being like 'well she seems into when she's blackout and that's good enough for me')#i just think the ravenels was written with the idea of appealing to people who don't go hard w historicals basically#and that doesn't mean you can't like it! i like several! including the one everyone hates!#but even the ones i like.... aside from MW i feel like there's some magic missing#and i think the magic is a lack of inhibition#and don't get me wrong lol she published bad books before the ravenels#books much worse than the ravenels#but like. idk. i just don't know how you can read like the ravenels#then go back and read the wallflowers or DoY or AtM#and not notice... a quality difference

hhhhhh I submitted my St Brigid portrait to Herstory Ireland's open call for artists for the light show thing they do in County Kildare every year for Lá Fhéile Bríd (this one being super special because it's the 1500th anniversary of her birth) AND THEY PICKED MINE (top left)
Tumblr media
the post on their Facebook reads:
We are delighted to reveal some of the chosen artwork for the #Herstory Light Shows as part of the Brigid 1500 Festival in Kildare on the 31st January and the 1st February 2024.
Today we are sharing the artists Margaret McKenna @celticmyths
Sue Ellen Parkinson sue.ellen.parkinson
Maeve Finn @maevefinnartist
Ana Colomer @artwithanaennis
Aoife Cawley @aoifecawleyart
Catherine Mc Gagh @cmcgaghart
"This year we were thrilled to receive so many new incredible artworks from Ireland, Northern Ireland, USA, Canada, Germany, and Great Britain. Over the coming days we will share more of the artists.
In many ways Ireland is still catching up with the visionary Saint Brigid, 1500 years after she lived. It’s wonderful to see her continue to spark artists and activists in Ireland and across the world today. Brigid is a bottomless well of inspiration and wisdom!
This year’s theme is the Old Irish saying: 'There’s room for everyone under Brigid’s cloak'. In these divisive times, St. Brigid calls us to remember our true humanity, bringing a message of inclusion, harmony, and healing.
The Goddess Brigid was a pan-European Celtic goddess, honoured from Turkey to Spain. Saint Brigid ran a thriving monastery in Kildare and her true Christian message spread through pilgrimages far across Europe.
This year Herstory is delighted to partner again with Kildare County Council, CreativeIrl and Dodeca Ireland for the wonderful Brigid 1500 Festival in celebration of St. Brigid’s 1500 year anniversary.
Join us for the spectacular illuminations in Clane, Athy, Newbridge and Naas, with performances by fire-dancers on the 31st January and the 1st February 2024.
@wicklowwillow will also host family friendly Brigid Cross-making and Brat Bhride workshops in Newbridge and Clane. You can sign up for these free workshops at the event on the night.
All events are free and open to the public.
For more details see www.herstory.ie"
if any of my Irish followers plan on going to this event PLEEEEEASE send me pictures!

How To Have Sex, and how to apply its intricacy to my own work.
Tumblr media
I finally watched How To Have Sex, Molly Manning Walker’s directorial debut(!), and oh my god was it amazing. I wanted to explore how I might be able to incorporate some of its dazzling beauty in my own grad film this semester. Orla and I have discussed it in depth, and are encouraging the group for Saint Catherines to watch it, as it is extremely relevant to the film we want to create. Although the premise is eerily similar to ours, the story is very different in many ways. In How To Have Sex, the characters are younger (16), and the nature of the holiday is very different. Additionally it tackles losing virginity as a rite of passage, which is not an aspect I have explored in Saint C. However, in the similarities it does share with the future Saint C, we can find so much to infuse our film with.
Tumblr media
I felt really moved by the film, and especially its treatment of difficult and nuanced topics. The film follows 16-year old Tara (Mia McKenna Bruce), who alongside her friends Skye and Em, has completed her GCSE's and is partying the summer away in Malia, Greece. The film tackles her embarrassment at being a virgin, and her need to lose her virginity. Her inability to vouch for herself is particularly raw and hard to watch as she is unable to confide in her friends about the sexual assaults she experienced, while they remain oblivious under the guise of celebration of her finally having sex. Tara evidently feels confused but as the narrative continues, she appears to space out slightly, and becomes visibly unhappy and tense.
Tumblr media
I don't want to go into too much detail about the story, as I feel like its worth watching! But generally I think the entire film is so beautiful in its telling of such a complex and harrowing story.
A few specific things, that struck me/are relevant to Saint Catherines:
Tara's relationship with her friends and to the men she meets in the flat next to them. This is praise generally for the entire script, but I just felt it is particularly the writing that makes this film so strong. I know these girls, and those guys. Each relationship mattered and tied into others so strongly that the characters were able to hoist incredibly heavy bundles of characteristics, histories, futures and motivations, but not in an obvious way. I desperately need to have such characters in Saint Cats.
Tumblr media
Use of camera movement and framing specifically were very tense, with tonnes of slow push-ins, reflections, wide shots that all just combined to create electricity. Just one pan and an expression left lingering told a ridiculous amount.
Tumblr media
The soundscape was utterly magical, especially I want to say how much I loved how touch was felt through the sound design. After Tara is assaulted, she is at a club, being touched by anyone that passes as its so crowded. any time someone touched her, there was a frazzling connection sound of grazing fabric, with the removal of touch resulting in booming silence, which repeated every time she was touched. It was incredibly subtle but just perfect at hammering her discomfort and feeling of violation home. Have to talk to Peer about this! A still of this is below:
Tumblr media
Anyway I'm really excited about Saint Catherines! :)

The she-wolf has a habit of wrapping her wolf's neck because the neck is the most vulnerable part of the animal. By doing so, she shows him her unconditional love For ethologists: wolves are the most loyal and affectionate animals: they have only one partner throughout their lives. The wolf is known to have almost extraordinary tenderness and affection towards his she-wolf ... To whom she knows perfectly how to return it

You're so right about AI being bland and how everyone should use it instead of imagining what it is and isn't but I cannot touch ChatGPT with a ten foot pole after spending months next to the only man I Literally Cannot Stand at work use it for everything from Listing Pros And Cons Of Living In The City For A Conversation I'm Having In Person Right Now all the way to This Is Basically A Search Engine, Right? I've Never Heard of Cthulu Before, I'll Ask ChatGPT Who Came Up With It And What The Stories He Wrote Are.
Oh yeah, absolutely!
Like, my take on ChatGPT is just...it isn't glamorous, one way or another. But the people who borderline worship it are extremely annoying specifically *because* it isn't glamorous. I can at least get the fear-mongering more, especially since we DO have this phenomenon where something doesn't have to be *good*, it just needs to be *convincing* for people to use it over human beings. (See: Google translate.) I know that people are absolutely using it to, say, write books and stuff. (I think that a lot of the concerns re: fanfic don't...hold up as much as people think, like this so called wave of people plugging in hundreds of fanfics, just because anyone who's used ChatGPT knows there's a character limit. It could be they're using another one, but I think that a lot of people just enjoy stoking fandom's anxieties over this sort of thing.)
Basically my approach isn't "use ChatGPT religiously" or even "like ChatGPT"; it's more..."realistically understand what it is and isn't so you can frame your criticisms correctly instead of relying on a bunch of Tumblr posts by people who have ALSO never used it."
Tl;dr: You're valid. AI bros still annoying.
And now for my Hall of Fame (using things from the last...month or so instead of farther back because it HAS gotten slightly better):
Tumblr media
Top female Celticists:
(1) Miranda Aldhouse-Green: Female Celticist, definitely doesn't deserve to be at the top given that she isn't...really...widely respected...in the field. Like, I'm not going to say more because we're talking about currently living scholars, but...there are others who deserve top prize.
(2) Dáithí Ó gÓgáin - Famously not a female Celticist.
(3) Barry Cunliffe, decidedly not a female Celticist.
(4) Anne Ross, see Aldhouse-Green. (Also...that book....is not highly regarded in the field.)
(5) Máire Herbert - FINALLY a female Celticist who's also widely respected and whose work holds up strongly. I sure hope that this isn't the only time this hap-oh, wait.
(6) Proinsias Mac Cana - Not a female Celticist.
RIP to Nerys Patterson, Robin Chapman-Stacey, Catherine McKenna, Charlene Eska, Rachel Bromwich, Cecile O'Rahilly, Elizabeth Gray, Maud Joynt, Natasha Sumner, Elizabeth Boyle, Ranke de Vries, Katherine Simms, etc. etc. etc. Barry Cunliffe is a more important female Celticist than them.

Philippe Égalité voting for the execution of Marie Antoinette...which is amazing when you consider that he was imprisoned at the time and awaiting his own execution, only a few weeks after Antoinette's. (He was a busy man.) Clearly ChatGPT liked the musical.

Ruairí Ó hUiginn is a wonderful scholar, but I think he's a little too busy working at DIAS to be the head of the Department of Old Irish...in Cork...where he has never lectured. And I feel like current head of the department of Old Irish, John Carey, might have a few things to say about that.

When I asked it to write a sequel to Romeo and Juliet and it gave me a baby who defies the laws of...basic...biology.
Basically the moral of the story from these shouldn't JUST be "ChatGPT is flawed" but more "It CAN actually be useful for coming up with ideas, the same as a random name generator, and it's very fun to torment with false information, but just like a random name generator, don't put more stock in it than it's worth."

Okay, saw you were accepting lists, I had made this post a bit ago, but have lots of thoughts/other actors I would have loved to see but are now to old.
So I guess it just depends on if we're going off of current actors or whatever.
I also have more side characters picked out too 😅
(I'm seriously too excited for this.. )
Honestly I'm not crazy passionate about any of them except Jodie Comer as Catherine. So that's my hard submission to be voted on 😂
Wait I love most of that list. We're onto something here. I'm gonna list some of them below:
Rachel Morgan: Rachel McAdams
Joe: John Krasinski (though @averagejoesolomon has other thoughts lol) (I always imagined Joe as Josh Duhamel. It's so funny we all had such a clear image of him specifically) (Also I believe Ally's pick is Chris Evans, specifically as Nomad Steve Rogers)
Matthew Morgan: Andrew Garfield (I want this man in everything but part of me wants him as Townsend?)
Abigail Cameron: Elizabeth Olsen (I endorse this 100%)
Edward Townsend: Taron Edgerton
Catherine Goode: Jodie Comer
I guess for the students we should try current actors around that age. (I'm imagining a perfect world where we're given a Netflix show to cast lol) but there's a lot more wiggle room for the adults. It also comes down to finding fancasts that can be easily edited which is where the age thing becomes a problem.
I feel like we have to use McKenna Grace as one of the gallagher girls. I desperately want to use Danielle Rose Russell/Hope Mikaelson but idk where/for who. Other actresses I've seen are Jade Pettyjohn and Grace Victoria. (They're ages are scattered so if anyone likes any of them for anyone chime in please!)
