I’ve never actually heard someone say the words, “I love recycling.”  Then again, 75% of my life is conducted with the handicap of earphones, so I may have missed a few choice eavesdropping encounters during the past decade or so.
However, I will admit that the words, “Recycling is one of those things Americans are ardently in favor of but is also behind in practice,” have been uttered by many foreigners.  “You guys always seem so much in favor of the idea of recycling, but your execution is a bit... elementary.”
Case and point, my time in Japan.
Tumblr media
The Japanese have recycling down to an art. Whenever you walk by or into a convenience store (practically one on every corner) with rubbish in your hands, you don’t just come across a trashcan. No, you see a series lined up together, not unlike the ones in the picture above. You have (from right to left) a bin for magazines and newspapers, a bin for PET bottles, a bin for cans and glass bottles, and a bin for “other trash”.  The setup is simple yet effective (save for the fact that those who are Japanese illiterate may encounter problems--though there are increasingly more trashbins that utilize illustrations rather than words to designate what trash goes into which bin).  It takes no time to throw away your rubbish and you carry on with your day without so much as a second thought about how you just helped reduced a landfill deposit by a plastic bottle.
Tumblr media
Yet another trash management distinction is how fast food establishments sor their trash.  Unlike the US where all the trash is tossed into a bin at random, the Japanese have created a system where leftover liquids are poured down a slot, plastics go into one bin (with depictions as to what constitutes as plastic), and everything else goes into the other bin. It’s a simple, stupid-proof system that encourages both the customers and the company to recycle.
So, would’t it be great if we adopted this rubbish system into the States? Some may argue that hired workers should be tasked with this sorting job, but that just belittles the idea behind recycling. From elementary school onwards, we’ve have the mantra of “this is our planet and we must protect it for future generations” hammered into our heads. So why would it be so difficult for us to take (at most) an extra five seconds out of our day to put rubbish and recyclables into their proper bins? Recycling may not seem as fun as our second grade instructional videos suggested, but it certainly does seem worthwhile if it’s going to make the world more livable for a longer period of time.  And isn’t it worth it if an extra five seconds could lead to an extra year, decade, century in the future?

Save The Earth
As teenagers, young adults, and humans in general, it is easy to get caught up in the life of consumption. America is a consumer economy, which is why it is easy, and seemingly normal for us to constantly buy all sorts of appliances, toys/gadgets, accessories as well as many other things that use certain materials like plastic and paper. Consequently, our “lavish” lifestyle has very negative effects. Our constant use of these materials are not good for our environment. The average American trashes about 150-185 pounds of plastic a year. Imagine how much of a positive impact we could make if we recycled, reduced or even reused just a fraction of these plastic materials.
Most of the time, when people think of recycling, they think it means not trashing the materials and associate it with the green or blue bin that you place certain recyclable materials, like plastic, in.  However, recycling can also mean “reusing” that material for other uses like cool and creative art projects. People can also reduce the use of paper and plastic by using online magazines and newspapers and using reusable water bottles/canteens. Another example of reduced use would be cutting back on the amount of water you use by spending a shorter amount of time in the shower. Being proactive is the only way to save earth from being a total wasteland and keeping it beautiful for future generations. It would be completely selfish and lazy of us as a society to not care enough to take action just because the effects of the problem do not currently apply to us. Take a stand, make a move, speak out!! Make those around you aware and lead by example. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi "You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Recycling
We are dedicated to fighting an enemy. We find enemies in the peace we live in. The shark is the enemy because he dares to disrupt OUR luxurious beaches. The birds disrupt OUR valuable flying space. The fish poison OUR valuable drinking water. Fight the sharks. Fight the birds. Fight the fish. Go ahead, fight them all. At the end of the day, when there's no one left to fight, and Earth wheezes her final breath we will understand that we were fighting the wrong monster all along. We are killing the earth, we are the invasive species. Humans were supposed to max out at 6 billion and we are at 7 billion and still expanding. When will we max out? When will we have our fill? When will our Home Sweet Home turn sour? We have to stop fighting, we have to take care of our planet. We consider ourselves the most intelligent creatures but we can't figure out a way to stop killing the Earth? Wake up. Recycle. Reverse the problems already in motion. And save OUR home.
