Compulsory Question 1
Discuss your CTS B manifesto.
Tumblr media
I was not in class for that week so I created my own form of Manifesto. It represents how art/design can change people.
Communication wise , people can learn how to improve their public speaking skills which will help give increased awareness due to the power and flexibility of their voices. It helps people understand their designs shared at a deeper and more meaningful level. Another example would be engaging through teamwork , making people feel inclusive and producing better design outcomes beyond our own ability.
There's a quote I saw online by Kotaro Takamura, 1910 - "Even if I see a green sun, I do not feel offended."
Teamwork is a full form of acceptance that everyone's perspective of art is different and by combining them together , it will create a more meaningful work.
For Expression , I believe that the understanding of art can change the world. Artists can depict their subject matter in terms of emotions through their work , rather than only making it entirely realistic. It makes the viewers think and feel, rather than simply observe the art. Their quality work can impact people through changing perspectives on social , economical or cultural issues.
For Reflection , self-reflecting is key to improving ourselves and our designs. Once we practice the form of acceptance , by taking in others' feedback and critically reflecting on our creativity , it will train us to push our limits to do better.
Overall , I value and respect Expression in art a lot. Impactful art has the intention of eliciting certain emotions to people by creating connections and mutual understanding , increases empathy , broaden knowledge, and challenge our assumptions. It can also help soothe and uplift the mind. Even art that leaves us uncomfortable can still help us to think differently and give us new perspective to the world. To me , this is the most inspiring form of art.
These are manifestos that I believe in , however if people have their own alternative opinions , I feel that there are no such thing as 'wrong' when it comes from an artistic point of view. It is subjective and individually people may respond with an entirely different manifesto.
Which aspects of CTS B were particularly significant for you?
I believe that speaking up on during presentation was significant to me as I struggle when it comes to communication. It has helped me in ways that I am able to ask others for help beyond CTS , for more troubling modules like Studio or Digital skills. For example , in Studio , it requires a lot of communication for the project and CTS has helped me go through it with ease. I also enjoyed doing the team activities too as I am able to push myself to communicate better and make more connections through it. Teamwork has helped me feel inclusive when my ideas generated are being put to use which makes the work more meaningful to me.

Common Module - AY23.24 CTS B Question 2:
My journey in the field of design has been a dynamic and evolving one. Initially, I embarked on the path of product design, drawn by my fascination with creating accessories and outerwear. I found more fulfilment in shaping these elements than in designing furniture, especially for children. My motivation was rooted in the evolving landscape of Vietnam, a country experiencing rapid development. I aspired to make an impact on the younger generation, to offer children the care and products they deserve. In this endeavour, I aimed to employ sustainable materials and steer clear of toxic substances like plastic and harmful dyes, touching upon both social and cultural issues.
As I reflect on my origins in design, I realise that this was merely the starting point of a more profound journey. My time studying in Vietnam allowed me to uncover my unique perspective—my affinity for images rather than structures. This realisation laid the groundwork for a vision that I hope to realise in the future. The prospect of contributing more to the world of design, perhaps through collaborations with friends and connections, especially when I am financially secure, fuels my ambitions.
For now, my focus remains on personal and professional development in a field I'm passionate about. My essence is a blend of the vibrant culture and dynamism of a burgeoning Vietnam and the distinctly Asian influences I've absorbed while studying and working in Singapore. I'm currently pursuing a degree in communication, a field I perceive as an expansive ocean with countless avenues to explore. At this stage, I'm still in the process of identifying where my true passion lies. However, I firmly believe that you can't truly understand or choose your path unless you explore the possibilities.
To this end, I've actively sought opportunities to gain hands-on experience. I've interned with the fashion media department at a jewellery company and taken on freelance graphic branding projects for agencies in Singapore. And I'm open to the possibility of venturing into UI/UX design in the future. I've come to understand that every journey requires personal experiences and testing to arrive at a meaningful conclusion. There's no substitute for the lessons learned through practical work, and it's through these experiences that I've discovered my own strengths and areas for growth. The journey of a design student is one of continual development, a process of learning and adapting each day. My time at CTS has been transformative in opening up my self-reflective abilities, and it has proved to be much more than just an academic subject—it's the key to unlocking my own potential and fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared growth among my fellow students. For me, CTS is not just a subject; it's a gateway to self-discovery and a world of possibilities. ( journey of self-discovery and spiritual healing.)

Week 12 Reflection wiriting
Q. Restate your artistic vision statement, Discuss tradition design in connection with your own aspiration and the themes of CTSB
My design strength lies in having a diverse knowledge of various fields related to design, such as interior design, video, animation, product design, and illustration. Instead of having a specific focus of interest, I find myself fascinated by a wide range of design-related tasks. While this may be considered a drawback as it prevents me from specializing and being highly focused, I perceive it as a path that allows me to explore design from multiple perspectives and seek solutions that are closer to the right answers. Therefore, my goal is to become a versatile designer who can professionally address various design challenges as a freelancer. To achieve this, I need to put in dedicated effort to acquire at least expert-level knowledge and skills in all aspects of design.
However, the challenge I face is being an individual with no particular standout expertise that clients can recognize. In this situation, I believe I need to emphasize my style and concept. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in traditional and retro elements in South Korea. The question arises: why have old things become trendy again after being forgotten and disappearing from memory, especially in an era where traditional craftsmanship was fading away? I think the reason lies in the uniqueness that cannot be felt in everyday life and in designs that are peculiar yet effectively express identity. Traditional elements often hold a special significance that only people from a specific region can appreciate. While traditional items are rare in contemporary settings, they represent the history, style, and concept unique to that region.
Tumblr media
For instance, the illustrator known as Wooh Na-Young gained popularity by depicting characters in traditional Korean clothing, Hanbok. Through her artwork, she incorporated the traditional style of Korean clothing into characters, attracting considerable attention. This led her to collaborate with major companies such as Marvel and Disney, showcasing her work through traditional means.
Tumblr media
Reviving forgotten elements is not limited to illustrations. In 2022, the National Museum of Korea sold a wireless charging device designed as a traditional piece of furniture called Jagesoban for around S$70. Although this was considered an expensive price for a museum souvenir and charger, it became highly popular, selling out daily. As a designer, traditional elements should be seen as a means of expressing a design style and concept.
Tumblr media
Beyond mere artistic expressions like medium or drawing, there are various ways to represent traditional elements, including actions or history. For example, most games in the Netflix drama "Squid Game" are reminiscent of retro games that were popular in Korea in the past. Additionally, the K-pop group BTS incorporates traditional Korean clothing and traditional instruments into their performances.
In this world, there are numerous designers and countless designs, but to make oneself stand out, something special is required. Therefore, I believe I need to make an effort to discover my unique style and consider self-branding through various projects as necessary.

Compulsory Question 1
Tumblr media
Personally, I think that this manifesto is quite close to one I would make on my own. The only one I would change is week 2’s rule. Although learning from mistakes contributes to identity, I would change it to “Don’t let social identity define personal identity” as it is something I feel more strongly for.
Critical thinking is about having empathy and self awareness. Without it, my mind would be filled with preconceived notions and would cloud my judgement and ability to understand something that I can work on. The image we drew was two faces smiling at each other to represent empathy.
Tumblr media
Learning from our mistakes shapes our personal identity. By experimenting and trying out new things, we gain new knowledge about ourselves, about our strengths and weaknesses, our likes and dislikes, which makes us who we are as a person, but also as a designer in training. Especially now is the time to make mistakes so that I know what I must do in the future when I start working. We drew an arm getting a cut and a band-aid over it to represent learning from mistakes.
Tumblr media
Design that has no purpose and does not serve the community is art, not design. It is always important to keep in mind the target audience and any issues that could be solved or made easier when designing something. We drew boxes to represent drafts, but I think a more community related drawing would suit it more, like a designer holding hands with people.
Tumblr media
Context is important. it is important to question what deeper meaning there could be behind a design. “Design is in everything we make, but it’s also between those things. It’s a mix of craft, science, storytelling, propaganda, and philosophy.”  is a quote by Erik Adigard. We drew a mouth to represent the act of questioning.
Tumblr media
I believe that it is important to always work on yourself to grow and become a better person, and that is the same with design. Constantly learning from my mistakes and sharpening my skills is important to stay relevant in the creative industry. We drew a stickman climbing ladder to represent improvement.
Tumblr media
Last but not least, every little detail is important and should not be overlooked. This means every step of designing too. Like I mentioned before, I tend to skip ahead on doing research and go straight to ideation. Attention to detail is important to refine my work and ensure its quality.
In conclusion, CTSB is relevant to design as they are interconnected. I have learnt to make these connections through this module and will continue to do so throughout my design journey, following this manifesto the best that I can.

CTSB Question 2
For this week's question, we need to understand more about the connections among tradition, social participation, and design. Our team must get together to identify previous projects that address our question. I selected these two for this task.
MISEROER Social Swipe Donation
Tumblr media
This is a social activity, and to make donations easier than before, MISEROER is the first Interactive Billboard to accept credit cards. Two euros would be donated to MISEROER for each swipe of the poster. The card slices a piece of bread from a loaf to show that the money provided was enough to feed a family in Peru one meal a day. This initiates an interactive experience.
This Campaign is about: Product Innovation, Product Design, Best Donation Campaign, Technology, Social Responsibility
Keywords: Care, Community, Collaboration, Context, Consciousness
ONE: PRADA+CHRISTOPHE CHEMIN
Tumblr media
The 39-year-old French artist Christophe Chemin, who is based in Berlin, was perhaps reluctantly pushed into the spotlight of fashion for Prada AW16.
The self-taught collagist collaborated with the brand on the men’s and women’s collections to create a capsule of six composite prints: each “sews” together an eclectic stream of references, from Hitchcock’s Vertigo and Weimar Berlin’s cabaret, to the romance of the Italian Renaissance and the Japanese art of Wabi-sabi.
There are numerous methods to create as a design student, whether it be a work of art, a product, etc. These two projects caught my interest, so I selected them.
The first project doesn't directly relate to art, but I am really impressed by the creative thinking used to help those in need because it uses the motion of bread being cut as a means of swiping a card to demonstrate to the audience what you are trying to prove without using words.
Secondly, I find that this collaboration on fashion projects reminds me in a way that traditional creative forms could eventually be forgotten. The artist uses his designs to produce clothing that is both suitable for daily wear and useful in preserving these forms of art. There are more fashion artist that uses artwork to create an outfit that can be worn in our daily life's like Valentino And Hieronymus Bosch, Alexander McQueen And Gustav Klimt’s Symbolism, etc.
As a design student, I still struggle with wanting to focus on just one thing and like to explore a variety of interests. However, drawing is something I enjoy doing, and I frequently observe other people's works of art, particularly those from countries like Japan or Africa.
In addition to continuing my education and experimenting in the classroom, I would like to work on a variety of occasional projects that include every aspect of design, from graphic to fashion, and if the chance arises, I would also like to make something that can benefit the global community.

CTSB Compulsory q2
Restate your artistic vision statement.Select one work of design under the theme of social engagement. Discuss this choice in connection with your own aspirations and the themes of CTS B.
I’m a creative person driven by my passion for design and photography. While photography might be my main interest, I am also interested in various other visual art forms such as printmaking, motion graphics and mixed media. I’m proficient with the various graphic tools and have an artistic approach towards everything I create. I’m also a team player and know how to improve myself when given feedback.
Tumblr media
In the future I aspire to become a professional photographer and filmmaker. I also would like to delve more into the world of printmaking and learn more about the process as I would like to work on personal projects in which I can combine my photography with different print making techniques. I also would like to work on projects which are immersive and interactive, as I am really inspired by artists such as Olafur Eliasson. Being a creative means to spend your entire life getting better at your craft while constantly learning, which is what I aim to do in the coming 5 years and for my whole life as a creative.
Tumblr media
Coming from the Middle East and South Asia, I carry a bit of my culture wherever I go, as it is a part of me. This has made me appreciate other cultures and be more curious about how design and art differs and adapts. I want to work with different creatives and media agencies around the world to be able to become more knowledgeable as there is always something to learn. whenever I visit a new place, I want to leave that place with an altered perspective on design and aesthetics. A type of perspective that can only be acquired through experiencing a different culture.
In order to be able to achieve my aspirations and goals, I have to be able to build a strong portfolio along the way. Also more importantly self reflect and find out the values and ethics which define me as an designer. I am a designer and I am responsible for the work I put out into the world. It will outlive me. And it will speak for me.
Room to breathe by pixel art works in collaboration with Outernet and Panadol (2022)
An antidote to anxiety, this spectacular, celestial installment was available to all. With the aim of bringing a moment of calm to busy Londoners, the soothing experience guided you through the box-breathing technique, to melt away everyday anxiety.
Tumblr media
Located at Outernet, London’s brand-new media and entertainment district on Tottenham Court Road, Room to Breathe provided regular, daily experiences, free of charge, with no booking required.
Tumblr media
This installation is not only a spectacular way of addressing a social concern of overworked, stressed and overwhelmed public but also a good example of the kind of work that inspires me to work with immersive technology in my designs.

Compulsory Question 1 : Discuss CTSB mainfesto
This term's critical thinking has been revolutionary in my understanding and communication design. This manifesto connects the complex strands of critical analysis, artistic practice, and the broader range of our academic pursuits, attesting to the evolution and synergy within our group.
Our philosophy is ALWAYS INNOVATIVE, which reflects the values of our group. However, in class we have focused on collecting and organising different design styles, neglecting innovation itself. I wanted our manifesto to be a colourful picture of our process of drawing inspiration from a variety of sources, from traditional design elements to modern digital patterns, highlighting our dedication to challenging the status quo of design thinking. Each creative style should therefore be carefully selected to capture the spirit of our manifesto and bring about an intuitive experience that aligns with the underlying philosophy of our organization. Rather than blindly stacking them. I reflected that in creating our manifesto, we needed to explore the depths of critical thinking and analyse the subtleties of experience, design and communication. This is because the manifesto encapsulates our shared vision for an intellectually stimulating and visually beautiful design landscape, which functions as a beacon of guidance. By doing this, we hope to dispel stereotypes and create an atmosphere conducive to creativity and thought-provoking conversation.
But critical thinking's beauty is in how flexible and dynamic it can be. I have a different manifesto that places more of an emphasis on user-centric design. Although the broad strokes of our goal are captured in our group manifesto, I suggest a more nuanced focus on the end-user experience, which aligns with my area of expertise in design for understanding and communication. If I had the power to affect the group's decision, I would support a smoother integration of digital tools that align with the abilities developed in modules such as Digital Skills. The future of design for experience and communication largely depends on how well-integrated cutting-edge digital technology and conventional design principles work together. With this change, we hope to make our manifesto more applicable in a quickly changing technology environment.
This is because critical thinking is vital both in learning and in future work. The cross-fertilisation of ideas by integrating content from courses such as STUDIO and DIGITAL SKILLS and crossing traditional boundaries of subject knowledge has enhanced my critical awareness of design. In conclusion, our manifesto reflects our learning journey throughout this term, rather than just being a static statement. It intertwines experience, design and communication, and reflects the development of our critical thinking skills. "The Manifesto serves as a guide for us as we traverse this field of knowledge, demonstrating our commitment to advancing the design community and having a significant impact on it. (450 words)

Q1: CTS B manifesto
Tumblr media
As a collaboration piece, this is how i interpreted on the connections within our CTSB Manifesto,
Empathy & Self-Awareness + Good Design for Community (Weeks 1 and 3):
To authentically engage with societal issues, our approach is rooted in empathy and self-awareness. Week 1's exploration of creative practice and critical thinking laid the foundation for understanding that by delving into the experiences, needs, and aspirations of our audience and ourselves, we should approach our design projects across the modules with a passion point that resonates with a societal impact instead of looking on a surface level.
As Marian Wright Edelman once said “In trying to make a big difference, don’t ignore the small daily differences we can make.” (1)
Tumblr media
Preserving Individuality + Ongoing Growth + Embracing Failures (Weeks 2 and 6):
The link between weeks 2 and 6 is marked by a commitment to ongoing personal development. Which is a topic that I deeply resonate with, it is to recognise that self-discovery is a continual journey, enriched through transformative experiences. Also acknowledge that personal growth often involves stepping beyond routine and comfort zones. By embracing failures,
as Dale Carnegie once said  "Develop success from failures. Discouragement and failure are two of the surest stepping stones to success." (2)
such as making discoveries within our projects especially for this term Craft which involves tactile and experimentations it can be an experience venturing beyond the familiar, as designers establish personal boundaries and cultivate unique identities, making each designer's journey and contribution distinct.
Questioning with Purpose + Mindful Appreciation + Continuous Learning (Weeks 5, 9, and 10):
Critical thinking forms the bedrock of our design philosophy, evident in the connections across weeks 5, 9, and 10. Rather than settling for surface-level observations as mentioned above, we are committed to understanding the "why" behind our design choices. This purpose-driven approach extends to mindful appreciation, where we are fully present not only in the act of designing but also in evaluating and appreciating design. Our manifesto is a dedication to continuous learning, urging designers to maintain curiosity, seek inspiration beyond design confines, and infuse fresh perspectives into their work. Our designs, reflecting this commitment, remain dynamic and ever-evolving.
In conclusion, the interconnectedness of CTSB topics becomes evident as each facet relies on the cultivation of essential soft skills, particularly critical thinking. Whether empathising with societal issues, preserving individuality through growth, or questioning with purpose, critical thinking is the common thread weaving through these diverse elements. It is the catalyst for transformative design, fostering a deep understanding of the why behind creative choices. As we navigate the complexities of design and life, honing critical thinking skills becomes not just a professional necessity but a profound tool for continuous growth and holistic self-improvement.

Common Module - AY23.24 CTS B Question 1:
CTS B class has given me many opportunities to interact with other aspects of Art, through searching, exchanging, practising and criticising activities as well as useful individual and group activities. , has helped me clearly understand myself and the paths and goals I want to aim for.
Week 9's activity let me know that I want to become someone who works with design and art through our group work photo. And when I do the manifesto group, I want it to not be a whiteboard with all the right things available and written in order. I think it's like a travel diary about understanding yourself and others with art. This is a colour palette that is combined and shared by each person. I do not wish to change anything about this palette. “MAKE smART choice in YOUR LIFE” Like weeks 1 and 3, we learned the connection between life and society and art, as well as how we see ourselves when creating.“NO RULE to CREATIVE” is like the way I studied and worked in week 9 without limits and constraints without denying the most basic knowledge of art principles. “Fine magic in the mess” I choose the things that popped into my head immediately when looking at our board. The cohesion and working together is the magic of teamwork, reminds me of the 3rd week of school when we It's really important to understand and communicate from different people to different pieces of the puzzle and create something new.Just as there are no rules for creativity and each person's characteristics are unique. To agree with a groupmate about "we design useful thing" when understanding that using people as the centre of society is the environment in which art develops like User-centred design prioritises the needs and experiences of the end user. This manifesto advocates empathy, usability testing, and iterative design. Above all, self-reflection.As well as I try to expand my research and learn more (Norman, Donald A. "The Design of Everyday Things." Basic Books, 2013.) and the last thing is Design manifesto that focuses on graphic design. It emphasises the importance of simplicity, order, and timelessness in design. Principles cover typography, grids, and colour, making it a valuable resource for graphic designers. The most basic things are always reminded a lot by teachers. However, I recommend reading Vignelli, Massimo. "The Vignelli Canon." Lars Müller Publishers, 2009.
I thought I was very good until I started to change. It seemed difficult, but learning, developing and absorbing in the CTSB class really formed new, strong and solid values within me. During the path where I was confused and confused with the question "Who am I, and what do I want to do?" I had the answer.

CTSB Q2 Restate your artist's vision & one work of design under the theme of social engagement
My artistic vision statement as a designer is to use our skills to create change. By this, I mean being able to find solutions to design problems and progressively think of ways to improve them. It could be from addressing a social issue that could use a product that can make a difference or creating work to address issues and bring awareness to them. It's important to produce work that we feel can be impactful or express a certain emotion we are trying to convey. Each designer has their point of view which leads to so many possibilities of different solutions. The areas of growth around us are so wide that there are so many different ways we can use our creativity to make a difference.
Tumblr media
This is a Nonprofit organization called “The Shoe That Grows”, Founded by Kenton Lee.
He noticed that many children in Kenya were wearing damaged shoes and weren't able to get new pairs. “Over 1.5 billion people suffer from soil-transmitted disease worldwide.” Children unable to have access to shoes could make them vulnerable to possible infections and diseases without protection. Taking into account that children are still growing, they tend to outgrow their footwear each year leaving them to again have to purchase footwear that they can't afford.
What makes these shoes unique is their ability to expand five sizes and last for years. They have “ compressed rubber soles, antibacterial synthetic upper, high-grade velcro straps, and no mechanical parts or greats to break.” I think it was a very innovative idea as they could have longer-lasting shoes that fit them and decrease the amount of money they would have to spend each year replacing their shoes. He also created a website where people can donate, and learn more about the product and the main issue he is trying to make a change to. A good way for people to be able to spread this message and bring awareness to people who may not have a voice. One of their vision statements that caught my attention was “Because poverty is a problem we can solve it together ”. It stood out to me because its something very assertive and empowering to encourage people to want to come together to be apart of the solution.
I decided to choose this social engagement issue because it is an issue that a lot of people in poverty suffer from not having enough funds to be safe and protect themselves. The product also seems very versatile so it can be worn by many different types of people. The idea of creating a product that is both durable and long-lasting does help make a difference and hopefully continue to protect children from suffering from diseases around them.

Week 11 - Compulsory Question 1
CTS B - Manifesto
In our discussion about what constitutes good art, my group and I reached a consensus on several key elements that we believe contribute to the creation of exceptional artworks. These elements are not only relevant to artists but also hold significance for designers, as they form the foundation for impactful and meaningful creative work:
Conveying a Strong and Impactful Message: Good art has the power to communicate and convey a message that resonates with its audience. It goes beyond mere aesthetics and touches the viewers emotionally or intellectually (Artland Editors, 2019). Whether it's a painting, a sculpture, or a graphic design, art that leaves a lasting impression often has a compelling and powerful message at its core.
Eliciting Curiosity from Observers: Art should provoke curiosity and engage the viewer's imagination. A good piece of art piques the observer's interest and encourages them to explore and interpret its meaning. Curiosity drives deeper engagement and a more profound connection with the artwork.
Mobilizing People to Take Action: Art has the potential to inspire action and change. It can serve as a catalyst for positive transformation in individuals and communities. When art motivates people to take action, it becomes a dynamic force for social change and progress (Branding, 2020).
Bringing Communities Together: Art has the unique ability to unite people and foster a sense of belonging. It can be a communal experience that transcends individual differences and brings diverse communities together through shared appreciation and understanding.
Improvement in Skills: For artists and designers, continual growth and improvement in skills are fundamental. To create great art, one must be dedicated to honing their craft and pushing their creative boundaries. The pursuit of mastery and excellence is an essential aspect of producing impactful work.
Feedback and Evaluation from Others: Receiving constructive feedback and evaluations from peers, mentors, and the audience is vital for artistic and design development. It provides fresh perspectives, highlights areas for improvement, and encourages artistic growth.
We believe that great art is difficult to make alone, and requires the involvement of many individual's thoughts, opinions, and help to create a truly impactful piece of art. Personally, I would also include that good art needs to be accessible to as many people as possible to maximize its reach and spread its message, as well as also needs to be able to convey it message clearly. This in particular is important because art should not be exclusive towards a group of people, whether it be in terms of socioeconomic classes or intellectual capability. Art is to be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of background. Examples of this include the monetization of artworks such as needing to buy tickets to enter certain museums, or the fact that many large museums, such as the British Museum, who hoards and gatekeeps the majority of their pieces (Gadina, 2023).
Reflecting on my own experience, the CTSB module has significantly enhanced my ability to visualize and refine my concepts. It has provided valuable techniques, such as drafting and creating collages, which have made the process of translating ideas into tangible art much more manageable. The module has been particularly beneficial in my project related to the 'watery city' prompt. Initially, I faced challenges in deciding which elements to include, but with the guidance of my lecturers, I gained clarity on the final vision for the project.
The impact of the CTSB module extends beyond the realm of art. It has influenced my performance in other classes, such as Digital Skills and Studio, by emphasizing critical thinking, planning, and effective communication. In Video Editing, thorough planning and storyboarding have become integral to the creation of compelling videos. In Studio, the module has contributed to the development of cohesive concepts and facilitated effective collaboration, reinforcing the importance of shared vision and communication.
Below is my groups Manifesto & my personal opinion on what a good design is and what a bad design is.

Week Four+Five CTSB - Field Trip + This Is How You Critically Analyse Artistic Traditions and Lineages
A “noticing” walk through the National Gallery Singapore.
A progressive art museum that fosters and inspires a thoughtful, creative and inclusive society.
Tumblr media
C.1975 , oil on canvas
Largely self-taught, Affandi was one of the first artists from Indonesia to earn international acclaim.
Found in (Re)collect: The Making Of Our Art Collection.
I found the painting done by Affandi interesting as I love the use of different angles mixed with different coloured paint strokes to form the shape of a human face. It is an abstract painting and I enjoy artworks of this type. After gaining knowledge that he has a distinctive method of painting without a brush and freestyles, it makes his artwork even more intriguing to me. It depicts a sense of emotion , where the face in the art looks sad or confused , and I feel like the colours used was combined well with it.
Besides the painting , the gallery itself makes me feel calm. It is quiet, not too bright but just enough to not overstimulate you and filled with many different forms of artwork that comes with their own interesting background stories. Its artworks presents different views and ideas as well as avoiding neutrality. The gallery often provides signage that directs you through the exhibit, including directional arrows that's physically comfortable , easy to guide and mentally stimulating.
The gallery also has a Courtyard Cafe , which serves affordable asian cuisines , recipes of Singapore Heritage food selections with a cosy and highly recommended ambience. I found it interesting that they try to preserve Singapore's Heritage Food that had been past down for years , and that tourists or locals could come down and try it alongside artworks that makes us feel connected to the past.

Connecting Theory and Practice
Design is not just about beauty, but also about conveying message and meaning.
The connection between practice and theory is important as it demonstrates your ability to use evidence to increase your understanding of key concepts, justify your decision making, and inform future practice. The strength of this theory-practice connection also contributes to the evidence of your critical thinking and growth.
For example, in class, we learned various design theories and principles, which provided us with the basic knowledge of design. In practice, I try to apply these theories to various projects, which allows me to continuously consolidate theoretical knowledge and exercise my creativity at the same time.
Creativity is constantly exercised in practice. I am able to expand my creativity by trying new methods and techniques. In craft classes, for example, we are often encouraged to try different materials and media, which helps stimulate new creative thinking.
Classroom activities also play a key role in linking theory and practice. In the CTSB classroom, we are often organized into practical projects. We can better understand theoretical knowledge through practical creations, and it also stimulates our creativity. Additionally, critical thinking skills have impacted my practice. Through it, I learned to examine works of art, ask questions, analyze meaning, and be inspired by them. This way of thinking makes me a more insightful designer and better able to communicate my points.

Connecting theory and practice is key to becoming a successful designer. The theoretical knowledge learned in the classroom is just the beginning, real growth occurs in daily practice. I think interacting with classmates, mentors, and the arts community, as well as participating in various design projects, were important steps in helping me shape my personal creative identity.
