CTSB Compulsory q2
Restate your artistic vision statement.Select one work of design under the theme of social engagement. Discuss this choice in connection with your own aspirations and the themes of CTS B.
I’m a creative person driven by my passion for design and photography. While photography might be my main interest, I am also interested in various other visual art forms such as printmaking, motion graphics and mixed media. I’m proficient with the various graphic tools and have an artistic approach towards everything I create. I’m also a team player and know how to improve myself when given feedback.
Tumblr media
In the future I aspire to become a professional photographer and filmmaker. I also would like to delve more into the world of printmaking and learn more about the process as I would like to work on personal projects in which I can combine my photography with different print making techniques. I also would like to work on projects which are immersive and interactive, as I am really inspired by artists such as Olafur Eliasson. Being a creative means to spend your entire life getting better at your craft while constantly learning, which is what I aim to do in the coming 5 years and for my whole life as a creative.
Tumblr media
Coming from the Middle East and South Asia, I carry a bit of my culture wherever I go, as it is a part of me. This has made me appreciate other cultures and be more curious about how design and art differs and adapts. I want to work with different creatives and media agencies around the world to be able to become more knowledgeable as there is always something to learn. whenever I visit a new place, I want to leave that place with an altered perspective on design and aesthetics. A type of perspective that can only be acquired through experiencing a different culture.
In order to be able to achieve my aspirations and goals, I have to be able to build a strong portfolio along the way. Also more importantly self reflect and find out the values and ethics which define me as an designer. I am a designer and I am responsible for the work I put out into the world. It will outlive me. And it will speak for me.

Compulsory Q1
Discuss your CTS B manifesto
According to my understanding, in simple terms a personal manifesto is a declaration of what you want in life or the values that you stand by as a human being. In other words, It is to keep my priorities focused.
Recent times like the covid-19 pandemic served as a catalyst for many of us to review our priorities and reimagine our lives. But even when it’s welcome or needed, change is hard. That’s when having a personal manifesto can help constantly remind you what you’re capable of, and what you’re working towards.
CTSB group manifesto:
Tumblr media
For our CTSB group project my team created a mirror, on the surface of which appears to be a set of statements that make the ‘rules of our life’. The idea behind the mirror is to signify that our manifesto’s are nothing but a reflection of us and our beliefs, goals and intentions. While our statements were very different from each other’s beliefs, It is important to understand that a personal manifesto is just that, personal. So don’t think that yours needs to look like someone else’s. While I wouldn’t do anything to change our group manifesto as it is a collective set of effort and I respect each one of my teammates beliefs, I took the time to think about what my personal manifestos would be.
In order to find out about my own beliefs, I asked myself questions such as, What matters to me the most? What do I believe in?What does my ideal life look like? I spent a long time thinking about these questions in the past few weeks. I constantly kept adding to the list or refining it- until I felt like it was the best representation of my values, ideas and goals. I tried to look at other manifestos for inspiration and I also thought about my life as a design student at Lasalle.
My personal manifesto:
1.You Don’t have to be the best at everything
2. Stop designing by trends. We are constantly trying to fit into ever-changing norms to appease mass media, without realising that those aesthetics are cages, they limit people to certain styles
3.Design for a greater good
4.Exercise your voice.put your thoughts, ideas, and opinions out into the world even if it scares you but always be open to to criticism and different opinions.
5.Study the work of who you admire and whose values your relate with. Keep researching to find the best of the best works which might’ve been lost or not recognised enough
6.Expand your horizon, Leave your comfort zone. Explore culture’s , places etc., and you might find inspiration in the most unexpected places.
7.Follow your heart
8.Alter your course often
9.Notice the stories around you
10.Document your findings along the way
11.Trace things back to their origin

Analysing Artistic Traditions and Lineages
Tumblr media
As design students we are constantly looking for inspiration. As a designer, I thrive when I have a clear concept in my head so that i can focus all my creative energy on that. In order to find a solid concept, analysing other works can provide us with the fuel for new ideas.
When we analyse works of art/design, we should mainly keep an eye on the medium, time & context, Form(Elements & Principles of art/ design: line, colour, etc.), Subject matter/creators intentions and more historical context. Visual analysis of art can increases our understanding of how visual material communicates and functions, whether it generates meaning, elicits emotion or creates a mood. This personally helps me gain knowledge on what kind of colours, symbols etc, to use in my designs in order to convey the idea behind my designs.
Tumblr media
It is also essential to trace the origins of art and design works to gain a better understanding of how artists originally created their work using traditional methods, rather than only knowing the newest, most convenient methods. This gives me inspiration to try more authentic techniques, which in turn provides me with unique ideas and adds a touch of character to my work.
Tumblr media
Ideally, I keep a close eye on my reaction to the artwork/design : what do I feel when I look at it? And, do I like the work? How and why do I find it visually pleasing, in some way disturbing, emotionally engaging?

Critical Self-Reflectivity
For our class activity, we found a design problem which was a fire engine hardstanding sign that was not visible enough and in turn caused people to park their vehicles at the fire engine access. This caused for concern as the area is filled with electronic stores and restaurants, making the area prone to fires.
Tumblr media
My solutions:
1.Provide a designated parking space. Simply said, the goal of a person is to park their motorcycle in any empty spot they see. But what if we provided them with an alternative solution like an actual parking space nearby. This way, they might park their motorcycle in the designated parking area, leaving the fire engine access alone.
Tumblr media
2. Make the appearance look important. Most people have unconsciously learned the general rule that signs and signals grow in size and vividness with their importance.
-To make the sign look more important and urgent we can use big bold letter and colours such as red, which demands attention.
Tumblr media
-Symbols are also easily recognizable and aid in quickly grasping vital information.
Tumblr media
-Writing the sign on the floor, and having the sign in a longer pole makes it more visible as well.
Tumblr media
3.The viewer must be convinced that it is in his/her best interest to comply. This can be done by overstating the risk (“Parking here may lead to countless casualties in the case of emergency"), institute penalties for noncompliance (illegal parking tickets), social good ("fewer people will be hurt"), or good citizenship.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, self-reflection is a crucial skill for me as that can help me gain a deeper understanding of my strengths, weaknesses, and motivations. With practice, self-reflection can become a powerful tool in my design practice, allowing me to work more efficiently, mindfully, and collaboratively.

Creative Practice and Critical Thinking
"Creative practice" and "critical thinking" work hand in hand to foster innovation, problem-solving, and the development of meaningful and impactful work.
Tumblr media
By constantly using our critical thinking abilities to ask questions from different perspectives (or taking part in debates with those of other viewpoints) we gradually begin to arrive at a clearer and more logical understanding of the truth. This is why there is value in a plurality of ideas or perspectives and surrounding yourself with those who see the world differently.
Case study - Dieter Rams
Tumblr media
One such designer who used critical thinking as a part of his design process and revolutionised industrial design was Dieter Rams.
At one point he was becoming increasingly concerned by the state of the world around him — “an impenetrable confusion of forms, colors, and noises.” Aware that he was a significant contributor to that world, he asked himself an important question: is my design good design?
Tumblr media
As good design cannot be measured in a finite way, he set about expressing the 10 most important principles for what he considered good design. The problem was, his work and thinking seems to be left unquestioned in any critical way.(Mohammed)
While many admire many aspects of the products Ram worked on, some found his Ten principles for good design problematic.
Tumblr media
I believe that acknowledging limitations in ones work, allows for critical thinking and adaptability, encouraging designers to consider a broader range of factors which ultimately promotes a more nuanced and versatile approach to the design process.
It’s only when we unearth these tensions in the work and thinking of those that we admire, that we begin to clarify and expand our own thinking.
