how many chapters do you think CM is going to end up having/how close are we to book three? since we're at the end of what was covered in the two towers film now.

Ok, so the simple answer is I've plotted out Compos Mentis to be 23 chapters, so once the next one is published it'll be 2 more before we hit book 3 (which is code named AI in my planning doc). Big chunks of it are already written, they're just in pieces that need to be stiched together with proper prose and editing.

The more invovled answer is that number of chapters can change depending on how I decide to split up plot points as I'm writing (I do love my cliffhangers). For example the warg attack and Battle of Helms Deep was originally only supposed to stretch over 2 chapters instead of 4. We also cover a bit more plot in Compos Mentis than the Two Towers film. Instead of cutting off straight after the battle, CM is going to end when... well, after a certain party and a few plot-important things involving Ellie, Tink and a seeing-stone occur back in Edoras.

So in terms of things we still have to get through in CM, we have, in no paticular order:

The general aftermath of the battle

Investigating what's happened at Isengard + dealing with Saurman

Reuniting with Merry and Pippin (I'm looking forward to this one)

Celebrating/mouring the battle back at Edoras

E & L having their equivilent of the "what are we" talk

At least one drinking contest

And finally, Tink & Ellie getting thrown (or rolled) a curve ball

...that last one will make sense eventually, I promise.

I am terrible at being social but I had to give a shout-out to the best fanfic I've read and the writer of course. So please give it up for @RealityWarp and her LOTR trilogy - Ravame's Bane. There, I said it.

That got a rolling belly laugh out of my friend, turning and opening his eyes to look at me properly. “We’re in good company then.” I returned his grin with my own. “Here’s to being insane and awesome then.” And I reached over and held my closed fist to him. Boromir just stared at it, baffled. “What is that for?” “It’s something from home,” I explained, elation, joy and longing all tangled up inside me at the words. “My home, I mean. Companions bump fists when they’ve achieved something great together. It’s like a small celebration of victory.” “A bizarre custom,” he said mildly, but was again smiling. It faded a tiny bit as we looked around at the vast fallout of the battle below. “Are we really victorious?” “We’re alive, aren’t we?” I answered seriously. “A great kingdom of Men did not fall today.” His tired but genuinely warm smile returned as he looked back at me. “Aye, that is true.” “Good,” I waggled my knuckles at him. “Now shut up and fist-bump me, you giant lunatic.”

Compos Mentis Chapter 21 ~ Dawn

A few weeks back someone in my ask box lovingly requested a chapter preview if there was even a small chunk of the next CM chapter done and ready to share. Well I'm pleased to say the next chapter is about 2/3s finished but still needs a lot of editing and polishing. That said, I thought you all might enjoy this little clip between Ellie and Boromir that I've been wanting to add into the story for the better part of 3 years.

I'm currently in the midst of the BG3 hype (hence all the character moodboards), but once all that's cooled off, I'm hoping to post CM chapter 21 before the summer is over. Until then, much love. xx
