Happy Birthday, Scottish radio deejay and broadcaster Ken Bruce, born February 2nd 1951 in Glasgow.
He was educated at, or at least attended, Hutchesons’ Boys’ Grammar School in Glasgow, where his achievements included being named “Laziest Boy in the School”. He did however, become Captain of Curling and took his team to the final of the Scottish schools Championships, such were the sports in Grammar schools!!
On leaving school, he studied accountancy for two years before discovering that he was not cut out to be a financial genius, or indeed any other kind, and became involved in a car hire company, rising from washing the cars to minor management.
In his spare time, he enjoyed hospital radio, and eventually talked his way into the BBC in Scotland, where he became an announcer. He read the news, introduced concerts and laughed, smoked and drank a great deal. He has, of course, improved his behaviour since then by giving up smoking.
His own daily show in Scotland followed, and he would have played out his days there had Radio 2 not come calling. The Saturday Late Show in 1984 was his first regular gig, and this led to the offer of the Breakfast Show the next year, when Terry Wogan departed for television. The year after that, he moved to the 9:30 slot, where he has remained, with just two intervening years in other slots, ever since. In 2019 it was announced that his show had had become the most popular radio programme in the UK, with 8.49m daily listeners.
In 1988, he became the radio commentator for the Eurovision Song Contest and has being doing that ever since too, although he is never quite sure why.
Ken loves proper live music though, being a failed drummer, and has a special soft spot for orchestral concerts, which is why he is delighted to have been involved with Friday Night Is Music Night for over ten years.
He has avoided the telly over the years, finding it all a bit frenetic, and also with a feeling that the viewing public are not quite ready for him; but he is happy to go on Countdown every so often because it is more like radio - no-one rushes around pretending it’s important.
He has been married three times and has six children, so is an obvious descendant of Robert The Bruce, whose experiences with the spider led him to “try, try, try again.”
When I posted about Ken in 2022 he had recently commented that he was content to remain at Radio 2 until the call comes to restore him to his rightful place on the Throne Of Scotland, well he hasn't retaken the crown, he did however quit the BBC in April last year, since then he has been on the commefcial station Greatest Hits Radio. Just yesterday there were stories that he is going from strength to strenght there, and has seen his audience grow to 3.8m, as his old station continues to lose listeners. Greatest Hits Radio, in large part thanks to Bruce’s success, has seen a large jump in its average audience over the last 12 months, up 70% from 4 million to 6.8 million
Someone once mentioned Ken looked a bit like the late Sean Connery, although Ken says it was because he impersonated him once, anyway, he briefly got to meet “Big Tam”, Ken says
“He sauntered up to me with a faint smile on his face and said: ‘I hear you think you look like me.’ I muttered awkwardly: 'Oh well, sometimes on one of my good days … ’ To which Sean responded: 'And one of my bad ones.’ He walked away, seemingly amused, but nowhere near as amused as my colleagues.”

Good Morning, Vietnam (1987, Barry Levinson)
26/03/2024
Good Morning, Vietnam is a 1987 film directed by Barry Levinson and starring Robin Williams, Forest Whitaker, J. T. Walsh and Bruno Kirby. It deals with the stay in Saigon, during the Vietnam War, of the air force disc jockey Adrian Cronauer, who was entrusted with the management of the radio, which gave him great popularity but also many detractors among his superiors.
Saigon, 1965: Adrian Cronauer is a United States Air Force airman who arrives in Vietnam after having worked as a disc jockey in Crete, enjoying great success, with the task of reviving the local radio of the army (AFRS). At the airport the first meeting is with Edward Garlick, who takes him to the radio station: during the journey Cronauer shows his liveliness by trying to approach Vietnamese girls, but the young soldier dissuades him, but is struck by the man's personality. Cronauer's irreverence contrasts, with the personalities of his two immediate superiors, Sergeant Major Phillip Dickerson and Lieutenant Steven Hauk, while the general in charge of the radio station, Taylor, is favorably impressed.
From the first broadcast Cronauer, who opens with a stentorian "Good Morning, Vietnam!", upsets the station's programs and rules: he abolished official press releases and traditional music, broadcasts only rock music between a sarcastic quip and a joke irreverent.
Adrian continues with his "animalous" conduct, and in a short time he becomes the favorite of the soldiers, who go crazy for his style, his imitations, his mockery. One day Cronauer notices a young Vietnamese woman, Trinh, with whom he falls in love at first sight. In order to be close to her he takes the position of English teacher in a Vietnamese school (mostly teaching slang and swear words), where he has the opportunity to come into contact with the local population, becoming famous here too for his style and liking him. In order to get to know the young Trinh better, Cronauer becomes friends with the young Tuan, the girl's brother: he also takes him to drink in Jimmy's bar, frequented mostly by soldiers.

ELVIS' DEBUT ON TV — 📺 [CBS] The Dorsey Brothers 'Stage Show'
Tumblr media
Elvis with Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey at CBS Studio 50, New York, March 17, 1956 [that would be Elvis' 5th appearance on their TV show, out of 6 total.].
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By December 1955 Elvis had still not made an appearance on national television. His manager Colonel Tom Parker negotiated a deal through Steve Yates with CBS's "Stage Show" for four appearances on the show in January 1956 at $1,250 each and an option for two more at $1,500 each.
On the January 28, 1956, Elvis was broadcast for the nation for the very first time, performing "Shake, Rattle and Roll", "Flip, Flop and Fly" and "I Got a Woman".
youtube
[ABOVE: the January 28th 1956 FULL PERFORMANCE]
On Elvis' first appearance on American television, Bill Randle, one of the most influential disc jockeys of the time, was the man who actually presented Elvis Presley to the nation. He said:
"We'd like at this time to introduce to you a young fellow, who like many performers, Johnnie Ray among them, come up out of nowhere to be overnight very big stars. This young fellow we met for the first time while making a movie short*. We think tonight that he's going to make television history for you. We'd like you to meet him now - Elvis Presley. And here he is!" — Bill Randle, Disc Jockey, the man presenting Elvis Presley to America for the first time. January 28, 1956.
After this, things would never be the same, specially the society. Such a good beginning for a year, that special day in a January month! ♥
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
🎞️THE SHORT-FILM THAT NEVER SAW THE LIGHT OF DAY (for the general public... at least until now...)
The movie short Bill Randle referred to during his introduction to Elvis was "The Pied Piper Of Cleveland - A Day In The Life Of A Famous Disc Jockey" a short film made by Universal pictures about Bill Randle himself. Filmed on October 20th, 1955, at a concert in Brooklyn High School, Cleveland, it featured the stars Bill Haley & The Comets, The Four Lads, Pat Boone, plus the addition of a little-known Elvis Presley.
The original forty-eight-minute film was supposed to be cut down to a twenty-minute "short" for national distribution, but never made it that far. We're in 2024... 69 years went by since this shortcut was produced but the movie remains unreleased.
There is some dispute over whether or not this film actually exists, although it's said it was shown publicly, albeit only once in Cleveland, and excerpts were also aired on a Cleveland television station in 1956. Marshall Lytle, bass player for Bill Haley's Comets, corroborates the existence of the film in his memoir, "Still Rockin' Around the Clock", but he makes the unsubstantiated claim that Colonel Tom Parker, Presley's manager, bought the film and destroyed the existing copies. According to historians, tho, DJ Bill Randle, before his death in 2004, sold the rights to the film to PolyGram (it has been reported that Universal Studios has the negatives of the film in its vaults).
Much uncertainty about this short film, but can you imagine this film being release in Elvis' birthday centenary celebration? We watched, and listened, on Elvis' 89th birthday a few days earlier this year, to them playing during his birthday celebration at Graceland the original "That's All Right" record as it was cut at Sun Records studio in 1954, so who knows? There's always rare things surfacing here and there, so... we better keep our hopes this Bill Randle's 1955 movie, with some new 'baby Elvis' footage, will be release any day now [such as we know there's 'Elvis On Tour' and 'Elvis: That's the Way It Is' never seen before footage coming our way, as confirmed by the "Elvis" 2022 biopic's film director, Baz Luhrmann — finally! We hope it will be released soon].
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But enough daydreaming... Back to Elvis' 1st television appearances.
After the premiere on America's television on January 28th, 1956, Elvis would do five more appearances on 'The Dorsey Brothers Stage Show" for the next eight weeks. Those would take place on February 4, February 11, February 18, March 17 and March 24th, 1956.

March 17th, 1956 | "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Heartbreak Hotel" *

* This is the usual arrangement for the "Heartbreak Hotel" song. On February 11th, 1956, Elvis performed this same song onstage of 'The Dorsey Brothers Show' but it sounded something more… dramatic (I guess it matched the lyrics after all, but I love the usual arrangement better yet).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And the last one... the 6th appearance on 'Dorsey Brothers Stage Show':
March 24th, 1956 | "Money Honey" and "Heartbreak Hotel" | [FULL PERFORMANCE]
youtube
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We can see how on those first TV shows Elvis still looks quite shy. Although he moves the usual lot, he doesn't flirt with his audience as much as he would on the upcoming TV appearances (and throughout his life, actually). It's funny how he grew comfortable with being in front of the cameras so fast tho. As his photographer Wiliam Speer said, "I guess you must really like being photographed."

EDIT: THE BLUE MOON BOYS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hate it when I forget to mention such important, trivial, facts — and this shouldn't be footnote info and I feel guilty it is now but I forgot mentioning — The Blue Moon Boys. I love them so much! I watch those footage looking at them as much as I look at Elvis.
Like, I love Bill Black's energy onstage! I love him hollering, vibing to their sound, as loud as Elvis (on occasion). I love how he seem to love chewing gum (Bill is chewing gum in some of those footage), because it makes me look at the Blue Moon Boys and Elvis as a unit, real close friend who look alike, just how it should be. We know although EP for obvious reasons can't chew gum while singing, he loooooved gum and kept this - should I say "habit?" - throughout his life. It's sounding silly what I'm saying, I know, but I think this Elvis habit in fact date from back when he was rocking onstage with Bill, Scotty and DJ Fontana and it makes my heart warm how close and similar they seem to be, as friends, real friends. Bill is actually said to be the one cheering the crowds onstage when they first begun performing, when Elvis was still learning how to be the great leading man he became. When EP was still learning how to act onstage, how to manipulate the audience, creating the mad passionate reactions he learned to create whenever he wanted, Bill was the one heating things up, joking with the audience, cheering, hollering. Bill is amazing! His energy is intoxicating, and we can see it clearly on those first TV appearances performances. ♥
--
I also love how hot Scotty Moore looks! I kinda laughed thinking 'Oh my goodness' ... So this thing about rock and roll bands always having hot vocalists and hot guitar players as a rule, it looks like it all started from the 50s with EP and Scotty! (really, at least the singer and guitar player in most rock bands are hot AF, am I lying? *lol*). I have a thing for Scotty... When he smiles at times on those footage, I'm like: 🤤🥹🥴🫠 And I also love how he's elegant but at the same time menacing looking holding and playing his guitar like the guitar hero he was. Really, if you haven't yet, do yourself a favor and read Scotty's book "THAT'S ALL RIGHT, ELVIS: The Untold Story of Elvis' First Guitarist and Manager, Scotty Moore", by Scotty as told to James Dickerson (1997). Scotty's life story is fascinating and as interesting as Elvis'. ♥
--
And last, but never least, I love how together, calm and concentrated DJ Fontana looks. Ok, unfortunately being the drummer has it's disadvantages. We can't see DJ Fontana as much as we see the other boys onstage, but I listen to the songs until the very last minute and it's amazing how the music always has the closing, the important and dramatic ending, done by DJ's talented hands. I love that guy. ♥
Elvis Presley and The Blue Moon Boys were the best rock and rollers! I love their energy together. As much as I adore 70s Elvis onstage, the TCB Band, the Sweets Inspirations and all, if I only had one performance of Elvis' I could attend, just one to choose, I would go for - undoubtedly - the 50s ones, when those guys, The Blue Moon Boys and Elvis, were playing together.
That's Rock and Roll royalty. ✨👑 ♥
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There you go. All the videos together so you can watch of them easily. ♥

Happy Birthday Nicholas Andrew Argyll Campbell, better known as Nicky, born in Edinburgh, on April 10th 1961.
Best known for hosting Wheel of Fortune with fellow Scot Carol Smillie, but now the main show we might know him for is the very good Long Lost Family which aims to reunite close relatives after years of separation, often the people featured have been, like Nicky himself adopted, his "born" name was Nicholas Lackey he was adopted at four days old. His biological mother Stella was unmarried and had travelled from Ireland to give birth. Although she sent Christmas cards for the first five years of Nicky's life, they had no direct contact. It was not until he was in his 20's that Nicky decided to try and track down Stella and his biological father Joseph.
Although he discovered that his biological heritage was Irish, Nicky still thinks of himself as a Scot and it's his adoptive family, the Campbells, that he's closest to.
He was educated at the independent school Edinburgh Academy. His adoptive mother was a psychiatric social worker and his adoptive father a publisher of maps.
Nicky Campbell gained a history degree from Aberdeen University, and then became a jingle writer for Northsound Radio. At university, Campbell's best friend had been the actor Iain Glen.
Campbell went on to present the breakfast show there before crossing the border to join London's Capital Radio in 1986. Just a year later Nicky Campbell moved to Radio 1 where he had a variety of slots before moving to BBC Radio Five Live in October 1997. He regularly hosted Top of the Pops from 1988 to 1991 and again from 1994 to 1997.
He currently presents The Big Questions on BBC One and the aforementioned Long Lost Family, as well as his presenting he has written and co-produced a jazz swing album for singer and actor Mark Moraghan. As well as recording an album with the multi talented Kate Robbins. He is the director of a recording company who supply original music fro TV and films. On Radio Campbell has won seven Sony Awards, including a Gold Award in 2007 for the Radio 5 Live Breakfast programme as "Best News and Current Affairs Programme"
Nicky is a Patron of the British Association for Adoption and Fostering as well as he supports wildlife conservation and has works closely with Will Travers, Virginia McKenna and the Born Free Foundation.
In 2017 he made a documentary for the Women at War series for BBC1 with his adoptive mother Sheila Campbell.[18] He found out more about his her role in World War 2 and her experiences as a radar operator on D-Day.[Also that year he took part in All Star Musicals for ITV performing Razzle Dazzle from the musical Chicago live at the London Palladium.
In 2021 Campbell presented Manhunt; The Raul Moat Story on ITV1. This was the inside story of how Moat was tracked down, all in the glare of 24-hour rolling news. I n recent years Nicky has also been involved in a number of podcasts
Last year Police launch investigation after Campbell says he suffered abuse during his time at Edinburgh Academy in the 1970s. He made the claims during an episode of his BBC podcast Different, saying the experience had a "profound effect on my life".
The broadcaster said: "I was badly beaten up at school by a teacher who was a leading light in the scripture union.
"My mother took it as far as she could and got a grovelling apology from (the man involved), but was essentially stonewalled and it was hushed up by the school.
"Those were different times and that has stayed with me all my life."
The school said it "deeply" regrets the allegations and "wholeheartedly" apologised to those involved.
In a previously released statement, the school said: "We have worked closely with the relevant authorities including Police Scotland with their inquiries and would like to provide reassurance that things have dramatically changed since the 1970s.
"The Academy has robust measures in place to safeguard children at the school, with child protection training now core to the ethos of the Academy."
A New Radio 5 Live simulcast is due to start on Monday 17th April on the UK feed of BBC News and BBC Two. Nicky Campbell’s show will also be broadcast on BBC Two.

This was a fun little project I found on @suugrbunz posts and I thought it would be fun to practice with this prompt. Hope you like it!
Prompt idea to practice your writing otp (ocs or fandom) — it'd be so cool since a lot of us write BoB fandom related content. So it can be interrupted as a modern au or !! Write your couples when they have grown old together
~💚~💚~💚~💚~💚~💚~
Upon returning from Europe after the war came to an end, you and Joe Liebgott had enough points for Honorable Discharge then came back to America after having served together in Easy Company ready to begin your lives as an exclusive couple. You both agreed that California would be the proper place to settle together. With the finances you each earned overseas, you bought a modest home with all the trimmings and furniture to fill it with.
June 1946
A representative from a popular local radio station visited your home to invite you and Joe for a live broadcast interview about your experiences together as a couple while deployed. The man explained it would be a real human-interest story and the American public would love to hear it. After a little bit of coaxing, you convince Joe to do it with you.
You and Joe seated next to eachother across from the record jockey who would be interviewing you. The interview simply went as follows:
Record Jockey (RJ): So, are you two a couple?
Y/N: We are a couple. *Proudly smiling*
Joe: *Nods with a grin*
RJ: Would you mind telling us the story of how you two met?
*You’re hesitant at first because women serving in the military was quite frowned upon, but nonetheless would still be overjoyed to tell the story. Joe would only be looking to you to do all the talking. He loves hearing your voice, and just stares at you admirably*
Y/N: We both enlisted in the Army at the same time and met at Camp Toccoa, GA. I trained with the Paratroopers and the medic training unit while we were there and was assigned to Easy Company where Joe also was.
RJ: When was that?
*Joe is better with numbers than you, so you hum in thought then look at Joe to help you out*
Y/N: June....? July...
Joe: July 1942
RJ: What was your first impression of each other?
*You smile coyly at Joe, narrowing your eyes at him. Joe would be slouching in his seat, not very thrilled to be there in the first place, but perks up a little at the question meeting your gaze affectionately*
Y/N: He was smug, and overconfident. A real wise guy with a mouth that needed a good bar of soap. My initial impression of Joe was that he was nothing but trouble. And you know what? I was right about that, (Y/N giggles) but after spending all those years with him overseas, I discovered how charming he could be. And how honorable of a soldier he was in the field.
*Joe grins adoringly at you. Grabs your hand and squeezes*
Joe: At first, I thought she was a pain in the....
RJ: Mr. Liebgott! Please, we’re live!
Joe: -right...uh, pain in the rear. Whenever me and the guys did somethin’ we weren’t supposta’, she’d always be naggin’ us. Ya know, like a parent? Thought she was going to fall behind a lot and complain about getting dirty or having to fire the M-1. She didn’t complain about the work, the filth, the sweat, the tears or the heat. None of it. She pushed through like any of the guys did. I read her all wrong in the beginning.
*Your eyes meet and exchange smiles*
RJ: How many years have you been an item?
Y/N: Well, the rest of the guys considered us an ‘item’ long before we dropped into Normandy. But I’d say exclusively since late June 1944. After all the near-death experiences, we definitely had a stronger bond.
*Joe just nods in agreement*
RJ: Joe, we haven’t heard too much from you. What's your favorite thing about Y/N?
Tumblr media
*Y/N looks over at Joe expectantly, smirking because she knows he doesn’t really like to talk about feelings*
Joe: *Long exhale, kind of stares out into space thinking* Well...she’s a knockout. Just look at her. *Gestures to Y/N sitting next to him blushing* I love that she can look the way she does and still be as strong as any of the guys in Easy.
*He looks you over and winks at you making the butterflies in your stomach dance*
RJ: So, was there a first date?
*You and Joe both look at eachother inquisitively, each squinting at one another as if trying to search the other’s thoughts for an answer. You shrug*
Joe: What about that night at Toccoa when we snuck out after lights out, and walked Curahee? Think that counts?
Y/N: Ah, yes! It was so hot and humid, and neither of us could sleep on those kinds of nights-
Joe: Mid-August 1943
Y/N: -so we both snuck out of billeting to get some air after TAPS and bumped into eachother behind the mess hall. So, it was an impromptu first date. We ended up walking the Curahee trail up the mountain where we always did our awful company runs. But you could see the stars perfectly up there.
*Joe nods*
RJ: So, with the war having brought you together and the experiences having made you two inseparable, any plans to make Y/N ‘Mrs. Liebgott?’
*You hiccup clutching your pearls. Joe chokes on saliva and chuckles nervously*
Joe: *Scratching the back of his head* I think that goes without sayin’--
RJ: How about little Liebgotts?
*Sweat forming on Joe’s forehead, you sense his panic*
Y/N: Joe and I have the same ambitions planning for our future. That will include marriage and starting a family. Right now, we’re relishing eachother living peaceful lives after the chaos of the war. We’re in no hurry.
*You look over at Joe, and he directs a grateful smile to you for rescuing him*
RJ: You heard it here first, ladies and gentlemen! From the treacherous depths of war love still prevails! Thank you for sharing your story with the public! It’s lovely to see this point of view about the war than from what we’ve only heard or seen in the news. What a story!
The End

#DJMonday Joe Cavanaugh started as an announcer at WARD radio (now WNTJ) in Johnstown, PA, and gained local recognition for his man-on-the-street interviews from the W. T. Grant store on Main Street – "for seventeen years, a consistently top-rated program" (Indiana (PA) Gazette, 5/22/1973).
Cavanaugh also hosted "Hi, Neighbor" for an hour every weekday afternoon. Stacks of letters, like those above, were requests that he extend birthday or anniversary greetings to area residents. On Sundays at noon, he was the emcee of Johnstown's most popular local show, "Page Polka Parade."
He later became a sports and special events broadcaster and a popular after-dinner speaker and emcee.

Steve Wright, who has died aged 69, helped to redefine the role of a disc jockey when he established his BBC Radio 1 afternoon show in the 1980s. To the usual formula of linking almost back-to-back music, he added gossip, trivia, guests from the world of entertainment such as Paul McCartney and Warren Beatty, and a general feeling of chaos that became known as the “zoo” format. It made him the most popular UK radio presenter of the era, with audiences of more than eight million.
“The show’s a little bit of everything you fancy,” he said. “I invented the format myself. It’s a tabloid newspaper of the airwaves – fast, fun and packed with info. Something for everyone.”
Some of the regular “guests” or “listeners” phoning in – including Mr Angry, Gervaise the hairdresser and Damian the social worker – were fictional spoof characters voiced by actors, while Phil Cornwell, whom Wright described as “a crazed, inspired genius”, provided impersonations of David Bowie, John Lennon, Robert De Niro, the Rolling Stones and others. Cornwell’s interactions with the DJ were improvised. A compulsive collector of information, Wright was particularly fond of the “factoids” and bizarre true stories he dug up to entertain his listeners.
Alongside the showbiz guests, Wright was also trusted by politicians, although things did not always go well. On one occasion he was waiting in the prime minister’s study at 10 Downing Street, preparing to conduct an interview with John Major, when he spotted two paracetamol tablets on a table. As he was suffering from a headache himself, he popped them into his mouth.
“When Mr Major walked in, I think he spotted the empty packets – because there was an immediate atmosphere,” recalled Wright. “He wouldn’t really loosen up. I asked him what clothes he liked to wear and he said, ‘Er, um, casual.’ I asked what sort of casual, but he wouldn’t be drawn.” However, Wright did elicit the revelation that the prime minister’s favourite record was the Marty Robbins western ballad El Paso. “A very strange song indeed,” observed the DJ.
Wright first took to the Radio 1 airwaves with a Saturday evening show in 1980 and, within weeks, was presenting Top of the Pops on BBC television. Then, he hosted the Saturday mid-morning show before switching to his long-running post-lunch weekday slot in a programme eventually titled Steve Wright in the Afternoon (1981-93).
At the beginning of 1994 he moved to the flagship Radio 1 breakfast show, titled Steve Wright in the Morning, in a bid by the BBC to halt declining ratings. He added 250,000 listeners within four months and kept a steady audience of seven million while audiences for other shows plummeted. Nevertheless, Wright walked out on his £165,0000-a-year job in 1995 – following differences with Matthew Bannister, the recently appointed controller of Radio 1 – and joined Talk Radio for an unhappy few months.
He was back at the BBC in 1996, switching to Radio 2 to present a Saturday show and launch Steve Wright’s Sunday Love Songs, a mix of classic songs, dedications and real-life romance stories, before returning to familiar territory in 1999 with Steve Wright in the Afternoon. When his departure from the afternoon slot was announced in 2022, he handed over typically graciously, saying “Now, I’ve been doing this programme for 24 years at Radio 2, and so how can I possibly complain? Really, I can’t hog the slot for ever, so let’s give somebody else a go.”
Wright was born in Greenwich, south-east London, and brought up in New Cross, the son of Richard Wright, who managed a Burton’s menswear store, and his wife, June (nee Saunders). Following the family’s move to Southend-on-Sea, Essex, Steve attended Eastwood high school, where he broadcast on school radio over a speaker system from the stock cupboard.
Leaving with three O-levels, he went through jobs as a shipping insurance company clerk, telephone engineer and backstage theatre worker, as well as running his own jingles business. He also had an unsuccessful stint singing on the club circuit, and worked in hospital radio in his spare time.
Joining the BBC in the early 70s, he spent three years working in its pop record library, digging out vinyl discs for DJs to play, followed by a period as a researcher in radio. He left in 1975 to host a show on Radio Atlantis in Belgium, then worked as a reporter and presenter on LBC in London.
In 1976, he moved to the newly launched commercial station Radio 210 in Reading, making promotional trailers and jingles before hosting his own show – he and a fellow 210 DJ, Mike Read, also contributed a pop column to the local newspaper, the Reading Chronicle. Wright switched to Radio Luxembourg three years later and returned to the BBC in 1980.
Radio fame brought Wright television appearances not just on Top of the Pops (1980-89), but also as a panellist on gameshows such as Blankety Blank (1987-89) and That’s Showbusiness (1990-93). He then became the presenter of Home Truths (1994), with celebrities answering general knowledge questions and revealing skeletons in their closet, and Steve Wright’s People Show (1994-95), featuring celebrity guests. From 1997 until 2009, he narrated the Top of the Pops archive footage programme TOTP2.
On radio, Wright’s other shows included Wright Around the World for the BBC World Service (1999-2003) and Radio 2’s Pick of the Pops (2022-24), and he continued to present Sunday Love Songs until his death.
He was appointed MBE in this year’s new year honours list.
In 1985, Wright married Cyndi Robinson; they divorced in 1999. He is survived by their children, Tom and Lucy, his father and his brother, Laurence.

Pair: Three Dog x g/n! Lone
Dialogue: "Are you sure about this?"
Word: Talk
Rating: NSFW
Category: Fluff
Word Count: 1.3k
“Tell me what you think of me.”
Lone’s eyes captivated him, their face seemingly so innocent, even down there, between his spread knees. Three Dog’s own eyes grinned behind his dark, hazy shades.
“Awooo, babe, aw-woo.” He whispered to them as his lips followed suit from his eyes, gracing Lone with a wide, toothy smile.
“Not good enough, hon. I want them to hear it.” Their gaze flicked to the microphone– the one capable of broadcasting to the better part of the entire east coast, and then some, now they’d helped him fix it all those months ago.
Three Dog gulped at that, and due to his lack of an answer, Lone’s hand made an attempt to pull away from where it grasped at his stiff erection so teasingly, so unfairly.
“Easy now, baby, easy.”
One testing brow rose as they looked up at him.
That look says one thing. Last chance.
“You’re sure about this?”
Their smile returned in full force, the expression all the more potent after their mock disappointment, and after their real unshakable stubbornness.
“ I want this, Three.” Lone leaned forward as they said his name, so close that their lips so nearly touched the weeping tip of his glistening cock. “You’re the one who seems unsure.”
“Yeah, well, I’m liable to be a lot noisier than you, Lone. Given your position here between my legs.”
They hmphed at that, and made to pull away again, before his hand on their wrist stopped them.
“Slow your roll, there, Vaultie. We talked about this, yeah? I’m all good if you are, just… You know I reserve my right as a disk jockey to dial up the tunes any minute here, if I think I’m gettin’ too over the top.”
“Sounds to me like you’re scared, Three Dog.” They folded their hands together between his legs, one forearm on each knee, and his poor, dejected manhood right there in the middle, still stiff, and hopefully seeking their attentions.
Lone never broke eye contact with him, and their voiced challenge lit a different sort of fire in the DJ's belly.
“Scared? Me? ” He scoffed, rolling his dark eyes beneath his sunglasses, “Well maybe of some things, I mean, I’m no lunatic. But this? Nah. You wanna try me, babe?”
Three Dog leaned in close to them, until his nose nearly brushed his partner’s, and only then did he pull the shades from his face, with narrowed eyes and a hushed voice, he spoke:
“Then try me.”
Lone pushed forward, as though to press their lips to his, and Three Dog braced himself for the tender meeting, but then they surpassed their supposed destination, in favor of brushing their lips against his ear.
“Oh, I intend to.”
The words sent a shiver up his spine he wasn’t sure a kiss could’ve matched, and with an expectant smile, Three Dog leaned back in his chair, plopped his glasses on the table, ensured the mute button of his mic was off, and swiftly started another song.
With a grin of their own– a more mischievous one for sure– Lone’s hand reunited with the soft skin of his cock as they guided him to their waiting mouth.
His hands on the armrest clenched and paled as they tightened into fists, as his partner took him between their warm, wet lips, going almost fully to the base in their first conquest of him, and leaving the DJ to bite his tongue– or to sigh out his pleasure loud enough for the whole wasteland to hear it.
He opted for the former, but it was only barely his choice.
“Dammit, you dirty little–”
They hummed as they looked up at him, waving the pointer finger of their free hand as though to say “ah, ah,” as their gaze jerked to gesture to the mic beside him.
Three Dog only gritted his teeth together, and closed his eyes.
Seein’ ‘em is probably only making shit worse. Looking fine as a fox down there with me between their sweet, savvy lips.
Unwittingly, he found himself humming at his own thoughts in agreement, and he felt a few puffs of air blow over his pelvic bone in the form of a snicker from his partner.
“Barely started here, and already got you making such sweet sounds for me, baby.” They pulled away with their lips, using that skilled hand of theirs’ to pump over his firmness, spreading his own pre-come and the slickness of their saliva over him to ease the fluidity of their strokes.
“Ah, you know me, Lone. I don’t sing much, I leave that to the radio, but for you? I’ll sing any day.”
“Oh, I’m glad to hear it.”
Maybe makin’ promises like that wasn’t in my best interest…
He tried to brace himself, but there was no holding back the gasp that Lone drew from him as their hand gripped hard over his cock, and their mouth delved back in, taking him to the back of their throat and sucking with a vigor that sent lighting all the way up his spine, until he felt the hairs on his head prickle with electricity.
“Fuck…” Three Dog squeezed his eyes closed again, speaking through gritted teeth as he messily cursed the cruel, sensual sage between his legs.
How the hell they got to be so good at this, I’m not sure if I wanna know.
He’d have laughed to himself at the thought, if he was capable of doing anything but failing to hold back his groans of pleasure at his partner’s wicked lips and tongue.
They set a grueling pace over him, bringing up their free hand from where it grasped his knee to help pump over his stiff flesh as their tongue dragged along the sensitive underside, making his hips jolt at the new sensations.
Gonna kill me if they keep this up.
And worse, maybe ruin my career.
A moan–surely loud enough to bring about a few questions from his listeners– was pulled from him against his will, but in this moment, Three Dog couldn’t bring himself to care.
Not a bad way to go though, if you ask me.
And who needs a job these days, anyway?
Nah, now all the radio host could possibly care about was finding his explosive release between the soft, hot lips of his determined partner.
Lone seemed to relish in that fact, as they too found him pooling into more of a mess with each stroke of their hands and tongue, each forceful pull of their suctioning lips. Three Dog’s hips were mutely bucking out of his chair, sweat beaded visibly on his forehead, just beneath his signature beanie, and his expression was so stained, he was liable to burst at any moment.
With one more jerk of his straining member against their wringing hands, and one more hearty suck of their lips over the sensitive head of his cock, Three Dog did indeed burst.
A long, drawn-out groan left his parted lips as he found his shattering release, and triumphantly, Lone grinned as he spilled over their tongue.
“Ahh, ow, wowiiiieeee, folks.”
Lone’s eyes widened at Three Dog’s– frankly poor– attempt at improvising these sounds to be intentional, but… They had to hand it to him on this one...
“Now that was one hell of a song we just heard, am I right, or am I right, wastelanders?”
He left a pause, taking a moment to try and collect himself as Lone pulled away, releasing his semi-soft cock with a light pop, that he was thankful was quiet enough to only be heard by the pair of them.
“I knew you’d agree.” He chucked a bit, even as Lone wiped their lips with the back of their hand, suppressing their own laughter as best they could as he pulled the microphone closer to him on the table.
“So don’t you worry, we’ll be hearing that tune again real soon. For now though, how ‘bout some news?”

I'm still listening to the John Robins + Elis James radio show, going through the episodes at what I think is a pretty significant rate. I'm still in June 2017, though, because they keep taking over the drive time slots and every time they do there are five bonus episodes, so I'm on episode 173 but if you include the bonus ones I think it's more like 220 by now. It's always fun but it does mean I know a lot about what those guys were doing throughout the first half of 2017, as there were quite a few instances within a few months where we'd get them broadcasting six nights a week. Well, John Robins broadcasting six days a week. Elis occasionally takes time off because he has to film TV shows and have a family. Mild, manageable, amusing but not double-act-breaking, played-up-for-comedy-but-not-in-a-genuinely-concerning-way tension ensues. Just the right level. Also there isn't any real concern about whether it'll become too big a problem that Elis James bigger than John Robins by too much, because I know John Robins is about to win the biggest award in stand-up comedy. I'm really looking forward to hearing the episodes from/just after that Edinburgh Festival.
Anyway, I slowed down on the posting about that radio show because I felt like I went too hard on that in the first month of this year, leaning quite heavily on it while trying to quit drinking and probably oversharing in posts about that, I figured I'd try to keep a bit more of that to myself. I mean, it's very much still happening. I'm just trying not to update the internet constantly, and posting about that radio show got so tied to that that I decided to try to reign that in in general.
However! I'm pleased to say I have an observation about the show that does not involve anything that can relate to my personal life! And I think people should know about it. Throughout 2017, I have just found my fourth instance of making this connection: John Robins will use the expression "your friend and mine" (to describe an inanimate object or intangible concept or something), I will immediately think "have you been hanging out with the No More Jockeys guys?", and then in the same episode he will tell a story from the last few days about hanging out with Alex Horne and/or Tim Key. He does not use that expression in his regular vocabulary; the only four times I've ever heard him use it, he ended up then telling a story of hanging out with those guys.
That thing where I watch No More Jockeys and then catch their phrases seeping into my speech patterns (the most common for me by far is "I think it's a case of..." - I'll catch myself saying that at work a lot): it's not just for civilians! I'm pleased to report that the comedians are also influencing each other.
