The Ledge #572: New & Old
This week's show was all set when some tragic news changed a good portion of the broadcast. Yes, there was still the mix of old and new tunes that had been originally planned. But I could not help but make room for a couple of remembrances of fabulous artists who had passed away in recent days.
The first death was Jack Lee, who got his start in The Nerves, a band that also featured Paul Collins and Peter Case. A song he wrote for that band, "Hanging on the Telephone", was later made famous, and he also wrote hits for Paul Young ("Come Back and Stay") and Suzi Quatro ("You Are My Lover"). He passed away on May 26 of colon cancer.
The other tragic passing hits hard. Throughout the past few years, Justine Covault's music has been a regular feature of The Ledge. I first became aware of her with her Rum Bar Records releases as Justine and the Unclean and Justine's Black Threads. She then moved on and started Red On Red Records, a lable that regularly put out some fabulous Boston-based rock and roll.
Earler today, her daughter, Haley, announced on Facebook that Covault had passed away, and my feed was immediately filled with remembrances from pretty much every Boston-based musician I know. She will be greatly mixed, and I hope that the handful of tracks of hers that was aired tonight will result in many discovering her talents.
I also found time to devote sets to a couple of great compilatons that have come out recently. This year's Record Store Day saw a 50th anniversary box set version of the influential Nuggets compilation. The original record may not have sold when it first came out in 1973, but there's not a garage band that has been formed since then that is not influenced by this set. The new five record set includes a record of tracks that were initially considered for the record but was bumped due to licensing. That's my focus tonight.
The other set featured is Gary Crowley's Punk & New Wave 2, a six record set that is just a joy to sit through. While most sets of this sort focus on the obvious tracks, this box succeeds because it's almost like every included track is a surprise. The big bands are represented by songs that may be considered secondary in popularity, but just as great as their best moments. Many other songs are rare treats that have not seen a reissue since their original release.
As for the "52 weeks of Teenage Kicks", I selected a version I found earlier this week on bandcamp. Al Bundie's Army is (or was?) a St. Louis band from a decade ago whose furious version is a worthy inclusion in the series. I've also replayed the verson by Jeremy Porter & The Tucos after getting the word that proceeds from that cover have raised almost $500 for Hater Kitty Army. Please head to jeremyporter.bandcamp.com to purchase your own copy to help this great charity!
And like always, I must again plead with y'all for more versions of "Teenage Kicks". If you are a musician, or have any contact with artists that could record their own take on the classic, please contact me!

The Ledge #524: Birthday Covers
When I read that the 35th anniversary date of the release of the fifth Replacements full-length album, Pleased to Meet Me, fell on a "Ledge" night, it obviously became the focal point for a theme. I decided to celebrate the birthday by recreating the album's track listing with covers of each and every song.
This became a bit of an issue, however, as some songs were missing from my initial search through my archives. And while I inevitably found some of the missing pieces, I still was short two songs just days before tonight's show. Luckily, I was alerted to a message board compilation of Replacements covers that included a track donated by our friend Jeremy Porter. Since this comp also included a version of "Red Red Wine", I quickly contacted him to see if he had the whole release! Well, not only did he have the needed track, he actually played on it! The Regulars were his high school band, and on this cover he played guitar and provided backing vocals! Yes, I was set!
Unfortunately, a few minutes in my show I was informed that June 17, 1987 was not the actual release date for the album. "Trouble Boys" author Bob Mehr tweeted, "Every June 17, I try not to be a killjoy to those celebrating the release of The Replacements' Pleased to Meet Me on this date. But, once again, I must point out that the album actually came out April 27, 1987."
Well, I decided to carry on with the celebration anyway, and also included a set devoted to the demos and outtakes that Tommy Stinson recorded during the album's sessions. If you love his later solo band, Bash and Pop, you'll really dig these rare tracks.
To fill up the rest of the show, I included covers of two other albums that recently saw their 50th birthdays. David Bowie's "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars" came out June 16, 1972, and my favorite record of all time, Exile On Main Street by the Rolling Stones, came out on May 26, 1972. It's a fun, varied show that should appeal to fans of all three of these legendary records.
I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. And if you buy these records directly from the artist or label, please let them know you heard these tunes on The Ledge! Let them know who is giving them promotion! You can find this show at almost any podcast site, including iTunes and Stitcher...or

It's finally here—the day we've all been waiting for ever since the “Moonlight”/ “La La Land” Best Picture fiasco: the Oscar noms have been announced. It's been a tight race, in which “Three Billboards” appears to have established itself as the frontrunner for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and maybe even Best Picture, while “The Shape of Water” has proven a nomination favorite this awards season but not necessarily the most likely to win. It leads this year's Oscars with 13 nominations.
In more exciting news, “Get Out” scored noms for Jordan Peele for Best Directing, Picture, and Writing, making him only the third director ever to receive all three noms on a debut feature. Daniel Kaluuya also scored a Best Actor nomination for the film.
Greta Gerwig, too, did well for herself, earning noms for Best Directing and Writing, and “Lady Bird” also has been nominated for Best Picture, though since Gerwig isn't a producer on the film she can't technically claim the same record as Peele.
“Call Me By Your Name” was nominated for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for Timothée Chalamet. Also notable is that “A Fantastic Woman,” the Chilean film starring trans actress Daniela Vega, was nominated for Best Foreign Film.
The Oscars are hosted this year by Jimmy Kimmel and take place March 4 on ABC. Take a look at the full list below:
