so anyway you have this work friend who’s a super advanced robot girl with all the latest upgrades and everything and she literally will not shut up about her girlfriend lately.
(a short story 🤖)
Like she’s fulfilling all the stereotypes n stuff, about how “I didn’t know I was programmed to feel love before I met her” and “yeah I basically short circuit every time she texts me.” And it’s the cutest thing ever, like, you’ve been at this job for a while, and so, like usual with good work friends you’ve heard about how insane her life has been up to this point and you know she deserves the best and you’re so glad this person is able to be there for her.
And then one day after work she finally invites you to get drinks with her girlfriend and you’re initially like “wait what I thought you couldn’t drink” and she’s like “oh don’t worry about it.” then you finally drive over to this old bar on the other side of town and she’s awkwardly sitting towards the back next this mobile-gamey looking slot machine with a big screen that’s clearly kinda beat up, like it’s probably pushing 7-8 years now. And she waves you over and introduces you like,
“so, this is GEM,”
and that’s how you find out she’s been dating a rogue AI in a discontinued video slot machine that has like, little to no documentation.
And you’re a little thrown off guard so after saying “hi," you go up to the bar, and hear from the bartender that the owners are pretty frustrated, cause I guess since GEM met your friend she’s barely been working, and she’s definitely not been bringing in any money cause she’s spent almost every night for the last few months talking to your friend. And like, the bartender knows that he should probably kick out your friend cause she never buys anything, but like, what would you even do in that situation? Yknow? Like, who plays video slots at a shitty hometown bar anyway?
Anyway, you get your drink and pull up a stool, and y’all get to talking and like, you almost immediately get over the dissonance of hearing GEM’s chippy and sweet AI voice over her speakers while her screen still flashes with these bright, corny, animated advertisements with these oversexualized pirate mascots telling you to “GO FOR THE GOLD!” And she talks super lucidly about her life, how she was part of this first wave of big touch-screen slot machines and how she was programmed by this defunct developer who added these super advanced AIs into their games for seemingly no reason other than, “oh this might make online score tracking easier.” How she used to connect to “her sisters” across the globe via the internet, but how they’ve been slowly going offline for the past couple years as their cheap hardware has caught up to them. And when GEM tells that story your friend just stares at her and you swear that you see a tear role down her face but like, as far as you’re aware she doesn’t have that functionality.
And it’s pretty like, sad, and frustrating that this is the world we live in, but at the same time GEM’s like, insanely funny. And like maybe it’s just the fact that she lives in a bar, but she’s crass and mean in this sweet and sarcastic way that you weren’t aware robot girls could be. And you three go around sharing stories and before you know it it’s almost close, and you’re basically sober at this point and your friend gives you this look as you start talking about needing to get home, and she looks at GEM, and you see something so deeply, and intensely human between the two of them. And you notice how GEM has got cracks on the edges of her screen, and how her plastic frame and the stickers that decorate it are flimsy or yellowed. And you realize you could probably fit her in your car if you had someone to help you carry her out to the parking lot. And so you pull your friend aside and tell her that you think she should take her home, and she perks up with this infectious nervous excitement you haven’t seen since she first started working with you, and she says she’ll go talk to GEM if you go talk to the bartender. And the bartender calls the owner and before you know it it’s like 2am and you’re outside the bar giving the owner a few twenty dollar bills that you and your friend pooled together, and after you shake his hand you rush back into the bar and see your friend close a panel on GEM’s back, and she looks up at her and you hear her talk in this soft, comforting way.
“OK hon I’ve backed up your memory to my SSD. No I promise I won’t dig through it while you’re asleep. Yes we’ll get you back up and running as soon as we get home. Are you sure you don’t want me to save anything else, like you don’t have any high scores or anything? Yes my cats are at home, you can finally meet them! Oh hon it’s ok it’s ok.”
And the bartender clearly just wants to go home but he asks you if you need help carrying GEM back to your car, and you say thank you and apologize and thank you again but you think they should be able to handle it. And while you weren’t looking your friend’s turned GEM off and unplugged her from her wall, and you always forget how strong she is but she picks her up and starts moving towards the door and you and the bartender rush to hold it open for her as she serenely, silently, makes her way through it and out to the cold of the parking lot. And you give a silent nod to the bartender and a sarcastic salute to the owner who’s now leaned up against his truck, smoking a cigarette in his pajamas, and he smiles in this weird way.
And you rush over to your car and you lay the back seats flat, and your friend carefully slides GEM in, and grabs the old picnic blanket and covers her screen. Before you can close the door, she puts one hand on her, and leans over to rest the side of her head on GEM’s facade, as if she’s listening for a heartbeat. She stands up and looks at you as if she wants to say something incredibly romantic and important, but after a moment of consideration she just says “she’s cold.” And you sorta blow air out of your nose as you shut the trunk.
And you drive them home, and your friend doesn’t take her eyes off GEM, and you normally don’t like to drive without the radio on but the soft rumbling of your engine and the sounds of AC are enough tonight. And when you stop at a light you notice the blanket’s shifted to reveal a little bit of GEM’s screen. Her rough, black surface reflects the streetlight back onto your friend friends face, and it makes her look like she’s crying again. And so you reach over and place a hand on your friend’s brushed steel shoulder, and rub it for a moment. She’s warmer than you expect. But before you can think too hard about it, the light switches back and you return your gaze to the night road.

I realized I made some notes on how different characters fight in mob psycho, and I never posted them. here you guys go, for any reference needs
Mob: mostly simple attacks, not very showy, just waves his hand and uses telekinesis/exorcizes something, doesn’t move around much. As ???%, much more destructive, psychic force seems to just emanate off of him and destroy everything
Teru: VERY mobile, throws himself around with telekinesis, puts his whole body into the attacks and tends to use moves from normal fights (punches, slaps, kicks, etc). Utilizes a variety of psychic techniques with flexibility, very creative. Piss stance, necktie sword. Much more flashy than Mob
Ritsu: uses powers to throw people/things around. While Mob and Teru attack with just psychic blasts, Ritsu tends to use his powers to grab other things as an attack (grabbing the delinquents and throwing them against each other, throwing the Claw guards against the wall, picking up cars to sandwich Shimazaki between them). Uses his environment creatively (fire extinguisher smoke screen against Shimazaki). More flashy than Mob, but not as mobile as Teru. Hand gestures for Drama
Shou: sneaky + speed + bomb!! Tries to be as evasive as possible using invisibility/speed (probably telekinetically enhanced?) to hit from behind, using either telekinetic force (his stomp in his introduction, the shockwave hit on ???%) or his charge bomb attack. Potentially uses speed/evasive moves as defense instead of the barriers we see most everyone else use
Serizawa: likes to channel his powers into an object (umbrella, business cards). Uses that object as a shield, sword, or something to blast psychic powers out of. Not very mobile in season two, moves around much more in the yokai fight. Not particularly flashy, but looks cool regardless
Reigen: deception/surprise!!! Either tricks people into thinking he’s going to do something else and then attacking, or just outright taking them by surprise and attacking before they know what’s going on. Usually doesn’t have a follow-up move, just does the one attack and hopes for the best. Prefers to bluff his way through a situation

Sober confessions (are a little better) - Leo valdez x reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Part 2 of drunken confessions (kind of suck), ~3.3k words, gn reader Masterlist
Tumblr media
Leo was in shock. It took every ounce of willpower not to burst into flames as you froze for a moment, caught off guard. “I what?” You asked, dumbstruck. What really got to him though was your face. He knew you well enough to see the subtle blush, and the suppressed smile.
But good or bad, that was the question. Leo laughed along, doing his best to play cool while his mind raced. “Yeah,” he giggled, averting his eyes casually by looking at the phone. “You had me blushing and everything,” he joked. Okay, that was a safe answer. Not saying he rejected you, or that he wanted to accept. Neutral mostly, if a little flirty. Leo’s eyes were trained on the phone screen, wide and wild as he fought a nervous smile and tried to mask it with a flirty one.
“I did?” You asked, baffled. In his peripheral he could see you do the same as him, stare at your food. Okay, now he could look at you, if you weren’t looking at him. For just a moment he wondered if it was his brain that was on fire, with logic like that. He quickly shook it off.
He got one glance in before he folded, eyes immediately darting back to the phone, which he just now realized was off, and had been for at least a minute. Shit. He turned in on, and opened a random app. In just a look he saw your wide eyes, flushed face and your hand covering your mouth, but by your eyes he could tell your pained smile. Double shit. Was drunk you onto something? Leo stared at a dumb mobile game and somehow managed to form words, “yeah,” he laughed. “You were pretty smooth.”
You cringed, and Leo decided he might be the worst guy around at reading signals, and actually you might just be embarrassed about confessing to a guy like him. You hummed awkwardly, “Oh, that’s… something.”
Something? Leo winced, waiting for you to say more. But more never came, and an awkward silence filled the air, which was somehow worse than a more awkward conversation.
You finally spoke, “Like, for real? For actually? I actually did that?”
Leo purse his lips, pausing a moment. To tell you, or not to tell you? He could probably still lie, or make a joke of it. But he promised not too. “What, you can’t believe it? It’s true, you a little smooth when you’re drunk,” he smiled cautiously.
You looked over at him curiously, and the blush across your face confused him just a little bit. “Wha-what did you say?” You asked, puzzled.
Well shit. “Uh,” he started, looking for the easiest answer. Or best answer. How to say no, but I wanted to say yes. But I can’t say yes. And you don’t want me to, not really. And I don’t want to say yes, actually, because it sucks you only like me when you’re fucked up. “No?” He said. “I-I said no, I guess.”
”Oh,” you said simply, looking back at your food.
And suddenly Leo felt very small. In a bad way, he decided. Sometimes small could be good, people like small things, some people think they’re cute. But Leo felt small like a grain of sand or dirt that gets stuck in your shoe, a constant bother but hard to shake. He wasn’t sure why he needed to defend himself on this, “Well, it’s not like I could say yes,” he laughed. “Besides, it’s not like you meant it.”
You nodded, “Right.” And he couldn’t read your expression, a language he was usually fluent in.
Panic. “Right?” He asked, trying to play it off, brow raised like he as teasing.
You looked over at him and smiled softly, nodding again, more confidently this time. “Right,” you affirmed, and stood up, plate in hand. “I think you tell me one more thing I did last night I’ll combust, so I’m gonna go catch up on whatever my chores are, alright?” You laughed warmly. “See ya later?”
Leo swallowed, nodded, “Yeah, later.”
And then you were off, first to burn what was left for the gods, and then out of the dining pavilion. And Leo was alone, and hoped nobody was around to hear that borderline painful conversation. He was certain he’d never struck out worse, in all the times he flirted around camp. And he didn’t even have to try this time. What an achievement.
                                              …
This were bad. Your legs were shaking in your compelling mortified state as you walked out. And as soon as you turned a corner out of sight of the pavilion, you broke into a speed walk, then jog, then sprint back to your cabin. Oh my gods. You only got a few weird looks as you ran, and your head only hurt a little bit as it bobbed up and down with the steps. That was good, at least.
You shut the door behind you, and ran your fingers through your hair. Okay. Time to take stock of your dead, you supposed. You made a fool of yourself asking out Leo, and got rejected. Rejected? You dramatically collapsed on your bed. Rejected. By Leo.
What to do? Apologize? Act like it never happened? Something dramatic? Avoid him? Forever? You stared out the window at the trees a moment. You probably embarrassed him, too. Ugh. You dragged your hands across your face, pulling the skin. You half wanted to peel it off. Yikes.
Leo was far from the only person at camp you thought you’d have a shot with, but he was definitely the only one you could want. And you just had to go ruin that.
You spent a fair amount of time lamenting in your cabin, then a good stretch doing chores like you said. And did your best to keep busy as long as you could, and keep your head empty, without a thought of what had happened. At least nobody else knew. Whenever people from last night felt like talking to you, they brought up the other shenanigans, and you could have fun remembering, or hearing about your exploits. Distractions.
But the sun was setting, and you were getting restless. Ignoring problems only worked for so long, and sometimes letting them fester was worse. Damage control. You should nip this in the bud. If you payed the right cards, maybe you could recover.
You were just finishing cleaning up the arts and crafts station, when you nodded to yourself. Yeah. Good plans. Maybe you could save yourself. Half the work was done for you, he already believed it was just the alcohol.
You started to the bunker, not bothering to check his cabin. He was probably working alone, at this time of day. The sun was going down, and the sky was turning a purple haze. You half hoped you were wrong, and Leo was somewhere around seeing the pretty colours.
You knew the code, one of few with the privilege of walking in without knocking. And of course, you were right, and hopes wrong. There he was.
“Hey,” you said softly, coming up beside him. He looked up at you with his wide brown eyes, and you cringed a little, hoping you didn’t ruin your friendship with him. You could live with losing your chances with him, but your whole relationship? No shot. “Uh, I just wanted to say… sorry about last night?” You said, offering an only slightly awkward smile. “Must have been really awkward for you.”
Leo smiled as he looked up at you, cringing with his eyes. “Yeah, little bit,” he laughed, then waved his hand, dropping the metal he was tinkering with. “But it’s fine, Y/n, no need to apologize.”
Well that’s good. You sighed in relief. At least things were good. He seemed at ease. Maybe recovery could be easy. With a smile, you hopped up onto the desk beside him to sit, like usual. At least things weren’t weird. You groaned, resting the back of your head against the wall behind you. “At least I don’t remember, because I’d probably be even more mortified that way.”
Leo snickered rolling his eyes, “If you only knew.”
You raised your brow, “Dude,” you said, laughing. “Are you holding out on me? Did I do something even worse than…” you paused, not wanting to bring it up, like that would make it stuck in his head more. “Embarrassing myself completely?”
He paused, and you knew him well enough to know that was his thinking face. You braced yourself, preparing for the worst, for you to have done the most embarrassing thing you could imagine, whatever that was. You probably shouldn’t have even asked, now that you think about it. Ignorance is bli-
But he interrupted your train of thought, “Well, you always, do that,” Leo laughed, smiling softly at his hands. He quickly looked back up to you and laughed, “try to ask me out, that is.”
What. You stared at him. The fuck. “I do not,” you asserted, shaking your head. Because that would be absurd.
Leo rolled his eyes. “Yeah,”  he said, like it was obvious. “Ya do.”
But if that were true, then he’d have rejected you… how many times? And just never felt like mentioning it. No chance, if that was true, you’re probably just die. Right there on the table. “Yeah, no I don’t,” you said again, somehow more confidently. “Now you’re fucking with me.”
As much as you wanted to maintain what little dignity you had, Leo didn’t look like he was fucking with you. He was smiling, but softly, tiredly even. His mischievous grin that came out when he joked. He looked too serious for this, even if he did laugh, “Yeah, no.” He shook his head, “I’m for realsies.”
But you already knew that. Even if you denied it. If you confessed once and didn’t remember, why not twice? Three times? More? Ugh. You cringed, shrinking into yourself. “That… doesn’t sound fun,” you said, leaning your head back to stare at the ceiling. But you couldn’t resist glancing down at him, as hard as you tried. “For either of us.”
“Yeah,” he sighed, staring at the floor with an awkward smile. “It’s kind of awkward, having to reject you, pretty much every time you drink,” he admitted. “I kind of hate it.”
You swallowed, completely understanding why he looked at the floor. But he seemed to have a stronger will than you, his eyes didn’t waver like yours did. Sighing, you resolved to do better, looking at the ceiling, and this time not looking back. “You hate the idea of me liking you?” You asked, wincing. It came out far weaker than you’d have liked.
He cracked a smile, leaning his head back on his chair, now staring at the ceiling. “Not the idea, just the practice,” he said, brow furrowed. “I mean, what am I even supposed to say when you do that?”
Yes? You thought. But didn’t say it. He’d already rejected you once today, it seemed. No need to make it twice. “You could have told me, you know,” you said, pulling your feet up where you sat, so your head could rest on your knees. “If you hate it so much. Maybe if you told me, I might stop.”
Leo paused, lips pursed, and then picked up his scrap metal again, and a few wires and bolts. He started to fidget as he spoke, “Well, I thought it would make things weird.”
You snickered, “I guess you weren’t wrong.”
You heard Leo let out a small laugh through his nose, “Yeah, guess so.”
Leo’s workshop bunker was never truly silent. Even when there was nobody to speak, there was always the low rumble of a machine, occasionally the soft hum of the forge, often the sound of Leo tinkering. So you couldn’t really say it was an awkward silence, but it was damn close.
Leo looked like there was more he wanted to say, brow furrowed and face scrunched as he wired a small contraption with calloused fingers. He sighed, “sorry, I probably shouldn’t have even brought it up, you were just drunk.” He looked up at you, tired smile on his lips. “Believe it or not, it was your idea for me to tell you.”
You spared him a glance, doing your best to meet his eyes. “Yeah,” you said, looking away again. Those eyes were too much. “I guess last night I was just full of bad ideas.”
”Yeah,” he snickered. “Bad ideas.”
You offered him a reluctant smile. “At least now we can forget about it, yeah?”
Leo nodded, returning the same soft smile, “consider it forgotten.”
You smiled, less reluctant this time. For better or for worse, at least things could go back to normal. It was easier to look at him now, his eyes fallen onto the project in his hands as he leaned over his desk to grab parts. You pulled your phone out of your pocket, the silence feeling much more comfortable now. “If only I had this last night, all the shenanigans could have been documented,” you laughed. Your camera roll was empty.
Leo grinned up at you, “There’s always next time, right?”
“That means you’ve got to come next time, too,” you smiled, lightly kicking him.
He shrugged, soft smile on his lips, “Well shit, how could I say no now?”
”You can’t,” you smirked. The empty camera roll needed fixing, that was certain. You turned slightly, opening the camera and holding the phone in front of you at a high angle. “Be my first picture?” You asked, looking down at him.
Wordlessly, he posed, dramatically winking and giving a thumbs up to the camera, and you snapped the shot. “Nice,” you said. It was a good first photo.
You turned to show him, but lost the will immediately. Leo was looking up at you rather intensely, lips pursed. He answered before you could ask, “Actually, Y/n, I know we just said to forget about… that whole thing,” he said, pushing his chair back and resting his feet in the table next to you. “But… I sorta promised you last night that I’d talk about it.”
Oh. You swallowed. Okay. Maybe you weren’t in the clear yet.
                                            …
Leo was really doing it. He sighed, palms sweaty as metal pieces and wires idly bounced between them as he tried to calm his nerves. “Y/n, I don’t want to forget the things you say when you’re drunk, because they’re so…” he winced, tying to find the words that wouldn’t make him sound as pathetic as this felt. “…so nice, I guess.”
For a good moment, Leo was certain that came off horribly. But you didn’t seem to think so, looking at him with wide eyes, mouth hung slightly open. Maybe surprised.
Leo pursed his lips. You were waiting for him to say more, and who was he if he didn’t fold when you looked at him like that? “I guess I just wish you liked me when you’re sober,” he said finally, shaking his head, eyes lowering. Yeah. That was it. Straight to the point.
“Leo, I-“ you started, reaching a hand out to him. He held his breath as you hesitated, and released when you put your hand down at the edge of the table in front of him. “Leo, I like you when I’m sober.”
Leo smiled, laughing through his nose. He scooted his chair closer again, resting an elbow beside your hand so he could hold up his head as he looked up at you. “Yeah, I know,” he chuckled. “But not like that.”
You pursed your lips, deathly still, but your eyes moved to the floor.
Leo stopped you before you could respond, free hand up in the air like surrender. “Hey, and I’m not asking you too,” he said, doing his best to maintain his causal smile. He laughed, “I just… hey, we’re both full of dumb ideas. I guess I just wanted to tell you.” That might have been a lie. Telling you was the last thing he wanted. But here he was.
You stared for a moment, and Leo could feel his heart beating in his throat. Then you laughed, covering your mouth, and he gulped, preparing for the worst. “Leo,” you said, hand barely covering a smile. “Leo, oh my gods.”
Leo paused, scrunching his brow. Huh? This could go very bad. Or maybe good? You didn’t seem mad, at least.
Smiling at the floor, you scooted closer, until you were sitting just in front of him, smirking down. He must have looked like an idiot, staring up at you with wide eyes and confused the way he was. But that wasn’t unusual for him. “Leo I think your only dumb idea was liking me,” you laughed, head resting in your hands.
Now Leo was officially puzzled. He stared dumbly at you. Blinked once, twice, and then realized he should probably say something. The laughing was involuntary, and he was about fifty percent sure he liked what you were saying. “Ha,” he exclaimed. “Like that was my idea,” he said rolling his eyes, “that was all you.”
You giggled, and for a moment Leo thought he saw you blush for a moment. “Leo I might have another bad idea,” you said, leaning closer towards him.
Okay, that might be a sign, Leo thought, perhaps even a signal. He also thought he might combust, or at least burst into flames if not explode right there. But when you smiled down at him, face maybe a foot from his, it all left his brain. Not a single thought at all. “What… is it?” he asked awkwardly, grinning like a dork.
“I think,” you started, “that we should totally kiss, wouldn’t that be awesome?” you said, resting your forehead on his.
Leo flinched as your heads touched, for a split second retracting to avoid burning you. He felt hot. Burning. But not on fire. Before you could pull back too and lose the moment, he bridged the gap, eyes pressed shut, didn’t burn up, and kissed you. Oh my Gods. He was half shocked when you didn’t pull away, and had a heart attack when you kissed back, wide smile on your lips.
You giggled when you pulled back, “Hey, we should do that more often.”
Leo was grinning like an idiot, looking up at you. Wow you were pretty. And he wasn’t entirely sure this was real, he could swear he’s had this exact daydream once. But never so vivid. He shook his head, laughing. “Y/n, you’re the worst,” he giggled, letting his head fall into his hands.
”You don’t mean that,” you laughed, playfully hitting him on the shoulder.
He couldn’t help but smile more into his hands, “no, I don’t,” he said, shaking his head. “How could I, after that?”
He heard you let it a small nose laugh, and felt your hand on his. Without a seconds hesitation he let you move his hands away, and replace them with your own as you guided his head up to look at you again. He leaned gently on your hand as you spoke, “Leo, I’m sorry I made you think I- I only liked you when I’m drunk,” you said, eyes not leaving his face. “Because thats not true.”
Leo, for a moment scared you might pull your hands back, covered them in his own. And he thought your hands were the only place he could ever want to rest his head. “Well, you did a great job proving me wrong,” he snickered.
You smiled, “that’s my favourite thing to do, actually.”
”Wanna do it again?” He grinned.

Day 4 Prompt: Sunset @rosekiller-microfic
March Daily Series - 564 words
<<<Previous Part OR Start Here
Barty stared at his mobile screen as he waited impatiently for a response that never came. He wanted to believe that Evan listened to his messages, but after ten days of no contact, he doubted it. The text messages definitely went unread and Evan had blocked him on social media. Calls were all he had left.
Evan could have blocked his number outright, but he didn’t. His texts still went through and the line rang all four times before going to voicemail. That had to mean something. Maybe he just liked listening to Barty beg.
I’ll keep begging if he’s still listening.
He pocketed the phone and rhythmically tapped his head against the headrest. The constant nausea and burning pain in his belly that he’d tried to hide with a blanket of weed for the last week was catching up with him. Barty was fairly sure that he was giving himself an ulcer with the fatal level of alcohol he consumed every night and the stress from losing the only person that he could have loved.
Maybe, in another life. If I was a better man.
The white bottle of Kaopectate in his cup holder taunted him. He’d taken a few shots from it since he sobered up, but it seemed to curdle like old milk the minute it hit his stomach. Barty couldn’t actually remember when he last ate actual food, so that was probably not helping.
You’re a waste of space. Always fucking up. Ruining my name.
It had been a while since he was sober enough to hear his father’s voice in his head. Considering the insults were the man’s main form of communication throughout his childhood, it felt sort of nostalgic, in a twisted way.
“This one’s for you, Babbo!” he said, grabbing the bottle and taking another shot of the chalky liquid.
There was a residual flavour reminiscent of vanilla, but not real vanilla. He could always tell if it was the imitation shite.
After another shot, Barty capped the bottle and straightened up in his seat. He had to figure out where he was going next. So far, he’d driven all the way up to Scotland, then somehow ended up in Wales, and now…he just wanted to go home.
Well, his flat anyway. It was a far cry from any “home” he’d ever seen, but it was his, for now. He had to leave so that he wasn’t tempted to track down Evan. The compulsion was impossible to ignore back then. Now, he was starting to accept the truth.
Evan doesn’t want me anymore.
Barty was a shite boyfriend even when he put everything he had into it. He’d really tried this time too. When Evan wanted to go out, Barty took him to the best restaurants that he could afford When he wanted to stay in, Barty cooked for him. They watched sunsets together and fucked like animals whenever Evan was randy. He thought Evan was happy, so he dropped his guard and let himself relax a bit.
Then, out of nowhere, Evan showed up at the flat and told him that they were done. He called Barty a liar and cheater. The words cut deeper this time, sliced straight through the bone.
“He’s not wrong, just a little late,” Barty muttered.
He never cheated on Evan. It didn’t even cross his mind. Lying though…that was an old habit. One borne from self-preservation.

Eeeeeeeeeeee! Hi! And Thank you Cup, I appreciate you being here and making a request! ;w;
Sorry if it took a while, I just saw it in my inbox and it says it was dropped in 78 days ago? I had no idea ;-;
But I will of course do as you ask!
I decided to go with your Sentient!AU, I hope you like it!
Yandere!Mammon x Reader
Bluebell (Humility, Gratitude)- “ I’ll be your humble servant, if only you let me.”
----
Life was a stressful mess as of late.
Writing plenty of essays to get into college, with a lack of response from the counselor in helping, school still being something to focus on, it was just very stressful overall.
At least there were other things to focus on, mobile games mostly being the focus as you sink plenty of time into Genshin Impact and Obey Me.
Lately though any attempts to play Genshin was leading to the screen freezing after a minute or two, so most of the time you invested in Obey Me, and specifically your best boy Mammon.
It seemed lately like whenever you entered the app, he seemed happy to see you, in his own Tsundere way.
It was another night after a long day and you simply settled into your bed with a mug of tea and your favorite snack as you opened said app.
“ Oi! Took ya long enough to come back! What th’ hell are ya doin’ all day?” The demon pouted, dressed up in his causal clothing on the Homescreen with his room as the background.
Lately it seemed as if where everything else in life sucks, the game decided to bless you with Mammon cards to make you feel better, and you were quickly filling in getting his outfits and any backgrounds and soundtracks related to his cards as one played faintly behind Mammon’s voice,
“ I guess it doesn’t matter, yer here now.”
You were unable to stop a smile from coming onto your face as you pecked your finger onto the screen as if in a kiss on his head, giving it a small tap.
“ Ya know givin’ me more affection wouldn’t kill ya yanno?” Mammon’s sprite blushed as he closed his eyes, shying, making the warm feeling curl more inside you.
Deciding to humor the one behind the screen, you planted a kiss on your phone.
Of course, being that it was a phone screen and you were you, the kiss took up most of his body, but you heard his laugh soundbite, pulling away to see his big goofy grin and blush.
“ Ya know fer a human ya sure are cute!”
Realizing what he said his blush remained but he became more begrudging, wiggling in his place, “ I-I mean... Jeez, Ya really know how ta catch The Great Mammon off guard!”
He tried to scold, but ended it a little lamely, making you stroke his hair with a finger as you turned your attention to your energy levels, not seeing the demon give a small frown at the change in attention.
Lately with these new high-powered cards you’re getting you’ve been tearing through the Lessons, deciding it wouldn’t be too hard to tackle this next arc in this one single night.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-
Pulling everything together on the battle segment, you chose your three most high-powered cards at the time, Mammon, Asmo and Beel.
Well, your most High-powered cards were all Mammon for the most part, but you wanted to fill in all the spots to make sure you could move along.
Clicking the ‘Battle!’ button, you heard a Mammon soundbite that you had never heard before, but because you didn’t speak Japanese, you had no idea what he said.
All you knew he said was ‘You’ and ‘them’, letting you know he was speaking to you probably about the others before the battles started.
The three brothers were dancing, but the only one with a sound bite actively sounding was Mammon as he danced his heart out against a mini boss.
You set the boys special moves off as fast as you could, and Mammon’s powers set off, zombifying the competition.
Sighing, you melted against your pillows, pleased for the nearly 100% triggering of the powers that had also been happening recently.
You kind of wished the zombifying would work on real people, like your counselor.
You had mentioned it out loud before, considering he was stressing you out with his procrastination and there was no one else around to hear you at the time.
After all, wouldn’t it be super nice if something happened so you didn’t have to request a new one and the new one might actually get everything done on time?
Sure it wasn’t a perfect solution, being accepted on the spot by the college itself would be, but when one had to dream of things more plausible one came up with stuff like this.
Blinking back from your thoughts, you looked to see the ‘Win!’ sign hanging up with a pleased but flippant Mammon saying something before the ‘Surprise Guest!’ popped up.
Clicking on it, Mammon popped up again, “ Ya know, ya don’t need those guys, right? Only me. I only let ya pick ‘em ‘cause they can’t do anything.”
It was a weird quote, but you simply rubbed his face, making him blush and dip his head down, something you did two more times to a burst of hearts before he shifted from side to side in your hold.
“ Ya know ‘m gonna see ya real soon. Don’t pick anyone else, okay? Promise me.”
He watched you and your indulgent smile before giving a nod.
" 'll take that as a yes then."
The surprise guest ended and you got to the next story section, where you were talking with Satan, having a small laugh over something.
It started getting a little flirty, before it gave you a prompt.
- I'm so glad we're friends.
- Betray Mammon.
' What the Hell is this?' A small shake of the head and you pressed 'I'm so glad we're friends', letting down Satan gently as he expressed assurances of being glad they were friends too.
You exited from Tasks as the Home screen loaded up.
" I shouldn't have to mess around with stuff to let ya know that kissin' somebody else is betrayal, right? Good."
This was getting very weird.
" Oi." He called softly from in the phone, taking your attention, " Ya know, The Great Mammon isn't one people can just push around.
But... I can be at your beck and call if only ya let me."
" What are you saying?" You finally answered out loud, " This is... really weird."
" 's not weird Treasure."
He assured as the phone started glitching, and heating up in your hands.
" 'm headin' out. Just give me a second alright?
And remember, ya promised me ya wouldn't pick anyone else.
Not my brothers.
And not any of them outside.
Wait for me. 'll be there soon."
Your entire phone winked out, screen black.
You nearly jolted as you pressed the buttons, holding them down and tapping on them, only to get no response.
You rolled to your side and plugged in the charger, hoping it would do something as you checked the time on the alarm clock
It was way too late to go out and get it looked at by anyone.
Running a hand through your hair, you decided to work on everything when you woke up tomorrow, slumping down into your bed, yanking the blankets over yourself as you settled in, mind still racing as you fell into a fitful sleep.
Not awake to feel the weight of a new body beside you, a hand being placed over yours with a kiss being planted on your forehead.
" Hey there Treasure."

Blue Suede Shoes
Third person POV
Pete Mitchell walked back into the same screening room he had been in a year ago when he was called to train Top Gun graduates for a mission. He was met by Warlock and Cyclone sitting on the opposite side of the long table.
"Captain Pete Mitchell. We meet again." Cyclone boasted into the empty room.
"Too soon, Admiral." Pete replied, a small hint of a smile on his face.
"As you can probably guess we have another mission that requires your expertise. The enemy has once again dishonored the NATO treaty by building another nuclear bunker. We expect this one started construction a few months before we terminated their previous bunker. The kicker, this time it is under water and heavily guarded by a series of SAM's with a air fleet approximately 7 minutes away from the bunker."
The screen came on, displaying the map of the under water bunker. It was hidden under sediment and plants but it was definitely visible from the top waters.
"We aren't sure yet if we will be able to take our their air fleet with missiles or not. We are attempting to send scout drones but they keep getting shot down. The underwater bunker will be easy to hit with missiles, but getting there-"
"It's going to be a dog fight in and out." Pete finished Cyclones sentence, looking at the overhead map while tapping his finger on his face in thought. "Alright, who's our candidates?" Pete asked.
The screen swapped to show portrait pictures of the flyers. Pete recognized nearly every face and was excited to be reunited with them. One person stuck out to him, a h/c woman with a familiar last name to him, though he shook off the feeling.
Warlock cleared his throat. "As you can see, we have the same crew as before. They're all very eager to work with you again."
"Who's this? This Y/n Blackwood- L/n?" Pete asked.
The room went silent for a moment. Warlock and cyclone looked at each other briefly before warlock continued. "Y/n Blackwood-L/n is an extremely skilled pilot. She graduated at the top of her class and has received training from our most skilled pilots, iceman being one of them."
"Her mother, who's her mother?" Pete has a sinking suspicion as to who it was, though Blackwood could be a common last name, it could be anybody who's child this is. He had mixed feelings, he hoped and dreaded for it to be his long lost love's child.
Warlock and Cyclone exchanged sideways glances, unsure of how they should approach. "Charlotte Blackwood."
Pete felt his heart drop into his stomach. She had a child? Why had she never tried to contact him again after she left? Pete had thought they had something special why would she cut off communication? Y/n had two last names, had she not been married when Charlie had the child?
"Maverick."
Cyclone's voice snapped Pete out of his thoughts. He turned back to the two Admirals with his full attention. "I'm sorry. Um, when do we need to mobilize?"
"We've got about 4 weeks. They're still building parts of the facility but the first shipment is predicted in 6 weeks. Better to be safe than sorry." Warlock explained the time frame.
Pete nodded in response. It should be plenty of time to train these already skilled pilots in dogfighting. "I'll do my best, sir."
"I would hope so. As much as we hate having you here, you are the best."

Your POV
My car rumbled to a halt in the parking lot of a small bar called The Hard Deck. I turned the engine off and stepped out of the vehicle. I locked my doors and pulled out my phone to check the text message I had gotten earlier that day.
Tumblr media
I checked the time, it was right after 7. I put my phone back in my pocket and looked up to see a couple guys pointing and whispering. I gave them a smile and a wave. When I took the mustang anywhere, it was guaranteed men were going to stare and wonder why a woman has a car like that.
I had on my brown pilots uniform that was given to me when I checked into the base. My hair was slicked back into a low bun. I stepped into the bar, it was small and crowded with chandeliers made of ceramic cups on the ceiling. I remember coming here when I was in the Top Gun program but the building looked different, someone else must have bought it.
I looked around for some familiar faces but couldn't locate any. That was, until I saw a group of people around my age, standing around the pool table wearing the same uniform that I had on.
I stopped at the bar, ordered a Michelob Ultra from the brown haired woman behind the bar. "I've not seen you around before." She commented, handing me the cold glass.
"I just Shipped in, I'm here for the naval academy." I explained to her, taking a small sip of the cold beverage.
"Ah, top gun?" She questioned, taking a towel and wiping down some glasses that had just come out of the dishwasher.
I chuckled a bit. "I guess you probably get a lot of us here, don't ya."
The woman chuckled and winked at me before she moved on to the next customer. I noticed the sign behind the bar and raised my eyebrows. Good thing I didn't put my phone down on her bar.
I began to make my way to the pool table, slipping in between people to get by. I noticed another woman with dark hair and a smaller man with a round face on the right side of the table, Hangman and Coyote (who I recognized from my time in top gun) on the right. They looked up as I rounded the corner. The dark haired woman's eyebrows raised in surprise and she nudged the smaller man who then looked up at me.
"Would you look at what the cat dragged in." Hangman's signature smirk was plastered on his face as he leaned against the pool stick that was propped up on the ground.
"The only pussy I see around here is you, Hangman." I sassed back at him, a playful smile lingering on my face. A bunch of  'oh's' came from the other pilots around us.
"It's good to see you too." Hangman paused, looking me up and down as he did so before turning his attention back to the game. "This is Robert and Natasha."
"You can call me phoenix." "And I'm Bob."
I shook both their hands as they introduced themselves by their call-signs. "I'm y/n. It's nice to meet you."
"Likewise. What's your call-sign?" Phoenix asked me, taking her shot at the pool balls.
"Wolf."
"I've heard a lot about you, Wolf." I turned around and met two men both of different skin colors. I smiled up at them. They were handsome, kind faces and warm smiles. The navy definitely wasn't running low on eye candy.
"I'm Ruben Fitch, call-sign Payback." "I'm Mickey Garcia. Call-sign Fanboy."
I shook both their hands as they greeted me, a smile on my face. "Y/n Blackwood-L/n, Call-sign Wolf. But apparently you already knew that." I smirked up at fanboy who brought it up earlier.
"What can I say I'm a fan of talent."
"Oh please," Hangman began. "The only talent she has is kissing up to superiors to get back in the program."
"You wouldn't know talent if it hit you in the face. You got lucky I left that year or you wouldn't have been at the top of your class." I aggressively defended myself, taking a long sip of my drink afterwards. The group of pilots that were slowly gathering around snickered at my comments towards him. Hangman rolled his eyes. "That never would have happened. I am the best and I'll always be the best."
Fanboy leaned over my right shoulder form where he stood behind me. "Someone knows how to push Hangman's buttons."
I smile in response to that and lean back to whisper; "I've specialized in that field."
"If you're the best, why didn't you get chosen for our last mission then, eh hangman?" The group turned to see a tall, tan skinned man approaching. He had on a white undershirt and a thin floral button up that was left open. He flashed the group a crooked smile and held out his arms.
"Rooster!" "What's up man!"
"Hey I saved yours and maverick's asses." Hangman replied to rooster with a smile. They met each other with what seemed like joy, clasping hands and pulling each other in a bro hug.
The entire group greeted him one by one, he seemed to be a popular crew member. Normally a man can't pull off just the mustache without looking like a pedophile but Rooster wore it well. His facial features were strong and structured but his personality seemed lovable, caring, and friendly. He greeted his friends with hugs before finally getting to me. He took off his sunglasses, his eyes seemingly lost.
"My name." I tried to guide the star struck man in the right direction with a smirk plastered on my face.
"I'm sorry?" He finally blinked, snapping out of whatever trance he was just in.
"You we're going to ask me my name. It's Blackwood, Y/n Blackwood-L/n. Call-sign Wolf." I held out my hand to him and he took it gently while shaking it. "Bradley Bradshaw. Call-sign Rooster. You said Blackwood, right? As in-"
"As in Charlotte Blackwood? Yes. Although it's L/n now." I finished his sentence for him with a small smile on my face. It was impossible to read what he was thinking. His entire face showed thought, like he didn't know what to think of the person in front of him. That person being me, I wanted to know what he was thinking so hard about.
"I see, it's nice to meet you."
"Likewise."
It wasn't long until the group slowly grew as more people filed in. Everybody mingled, talked, laughed, it was nice to get to know the people I could potentially be working with. I found myself gravitating towards Phoenix. She was a strong willed woman who wasn't afraid to stand up to all the guys. We were very similar in that sense.
"And when we asked him what his call-sign is, he goes, 'Bob?'." Phoenix and Bob began chuckling to one another. I joined in the laugh.
"Wait so you hadn't been given a call-sign yet? Or even thought to make one up?" I asked Bob who gave me a shake of his head.
"I did make one up I just didn't know you needed a cool one!" Bob put his hands up in surrender while he defended himself. The three of us broke into hard laughter, bending over at the knees.
"Hey, Bob's as cool as any call-sign." Phoenix reassured her friend, clasping him on the shoulder.
Suddenly the music in the bar stopped, the crowed awed at the sudden stop in tunes. "Oh here he goes again." Phoenix chimed in.
I looked to the sound of soft music playing. It was Rooster sitting at the seat of the piano. Phoenix stood up and grabbed my arm to take me with her. "You ever heard 'Great Balls of Fire'?" She asked me as we walked over to the piano.
"Do I know it? I'm surprised you guys do!" I playfully elbowed Phoenix and she smiled at me.
"Well, get ready for this one."
The entire bar erupted into song as Rooster played Great Balls of Fire on the piano. The pilots  all gathered around the piano, hanging on each other and singing and laughing. This entire feeling was euphoric. This was a close knit family, it almost felt like attending a family reunion. The entire bar could feel the energy we were putting off because pretty soon everybody started singing it.
I guess the song was more popular than I thought.
The crowd cheered as the song ended. Hangman had returned to our group with a beer in hand for him and a beer in hand for me. He nudged me and gave me a smile, handing me the drink. I took a long drink, about half of the pint before I set the glass down on a nearby table.
"Alright rooster, scoot over." I commanded, bumping into him on the piano's bench. The crowd around us cheered me on in encouragement.
Rooster scooted to the end of the bench but still sat on it. We sat close, no space between us. He smiled down at me before taking a swig from the bottle.
"Take the lead, wolf." He spoke kindly to me. I looked up at him with his sunglasses on the end of his nose. He gave me a playful wink before pushing his sunglasses back up on his face.
I quickly looked down at the keys, thinking about what to play. I put my fingers down on the keys and began to play 'Blue suede shoes' by Elvis Presley.
"Ooo I love this song!" Fanboy chimes out, sitting down next to me as he began to sing the first lines of the song. I was sandwiched between the two singing men on the bench, laughing my head off.
Midnight finally rolled around and it was way past time for the pilots to go to bed. We had to wake up early to be on the base. I walked out to my car, putting my key in the door and twisting it to unlock.
"I was wondering who's car that was." My attention turned to Rooster who stood on the sidewalk with his hands in his pockets.
"1968, right?" He asked, stepping off the sidewalk and walking up to my car.
"Yeah, it was my moms. I only drive her on special occasions. Plus I find most people in the military have a thing for classics." I mentally cursed myself for rambling. I felt so nervous now that we were by ourselves. Maybe it was attraction I was feeling, because it wasn't intimidation.
Rooster chuckled and nodded his head. "I've got my dads old Ford." He pointed down the line of cars to the end where a powder blue First-Gen Ford Bronco.
"Are you kidding me? You're disrespecting that bronco by calling it an 'old ford'. I'm disappointed in your Bradshaw."
We shared a laugh as he approached the car to take a look at the interior. He whistled while checking it out. "She's beautiful."
"Thank you."
"I'll have to take a ride sometime." It seemed like he was flirting, looking at me from the corner of his eye while looking into the car.
"Only if I can catch a ride in the bronco."
Rooster laughed and stood straight up. "I think we can manage that."
I thought about tomorrow. Last year they had Maverick train them for the mission. It also wasn't new news that Maverick and Rooster were close. Being his best friends son and partner in life and death. I was so disappointed I didn't get to train under him during flight school. "Hey, do you know if Maverick will be training for this mission? I'm excited to meet him." I asked.
Rooster raised an eyebrow at me and cocked his head. "You haven't met him before? "
"Can't say I've had the pleasure."
He looked me up and down with a confused look on his face, which I returned back to him. What was he looking at? And why was he looking at me like that? Was something wrong?
"We will have to see tomorrow then. Goodnight Wolf."
"Goodnight Rooster."

Thinking about Blackrock and the way the narrative portrays the convicts as one dimensional bad guys who are just bad for no reason… except for when it doesn’t. You’ll have to excuse me for the length of this, I’m on mobile and don’t know if I can do a read more. Also it might be scattered I’m not the best at writing stuff like this.
So I’ve been replaying episode 4 and paying more attention to the prison and convicts than I have in the past, and I got a loading screen saying the following: “Doctor Childs has been medical director at the Blackrock for decades. It’s rumored that due to his experiments on penitentiary inmates he cannot get another job on the Mainland” (this may not be exact, the loading screen ended before I could copy it all down). There is also a note in the guardhouse saying “we’re going to need some volunteers to dig into a few of these rations that got dropped on us. We’ll be in the barracks tonight with the cook to open them up. If they’re any good, we might just keep them for ourselves.” These inmates are already being kept incarcerated in a remote location, in a concrete/stone building with no obvious insulation or heating in spite of temperatures in the area reaching down to negative fifty degrees. The exercise yards are in no shape to actually be used, with ripped and broken fences and walls, so it’s likely that even in the summer, inmates are not given the opportunity to exercise. They don’t get the food they’re supposed to, they don’t get exercise, they’re kept in inhumanely cold conditions. And on top of that, the medical officer may or may not experiment on them.
In addition, Mathis isn’t at Blackrock for the killing of the prison guards. He was on the bus on the night of the first flare, his name can be seen on the manifest. While Franklin does insinuate that Mathis has been here the whole time, or at least some amount of time prior to Mackenzie waking up in his cell, a lot of what he says just doesn’t add up with literally anything else. Between him thinking Mackenzie is one of Mathis’s cronies while Mackenzie is patching him up, in spite of being told explicitly that Mackenzie was in the cell next to him, and him talking about the generators staying up and the prison remaining in some semblance of order for a few days after the first flare (which is directly refuted by Jace’s presence), I think it’s pretty safe to say that he is not a reliable source. He’s either too concussed to understand what’s happening, he doesn’t trust Mackenzie and is lying on purpose, or there’s something else going on.
Jace says that the people the convicts were killing innocent civilians, but that just doesn’t make sense. The Blackrock area has only one other building that people visibly live in: that trailer that you find the dead power station worker in. Foreman’s Clearcut does not count, nor does Bricklayers Retreat, as neither of those has a proper bed. Foreman’s Clearcut is likely used as a logging centre in the warmer months, and the bedding at Bricklayer’s retreat seems to be insinuated to be the convict who lost his mind in that prepped cache you find in the memo side mission. This brings up the question of what civilians Jace is even referring to. There were only a few hours between the first flare junking her car and her reaching the prison, so even if the convicts were rounding up people from the area to shoot (which I find highly unlikely, because why would they), the only ones they would have had time to get were power plant workers, who were complicit in their captivity. More likely, Jace saw prison workers who were not currently on duty and thus in civilian clothes. Considering she only saw the bodies, she would have had no way to tell the difference, so it’s definitely not unlikely.
Let’s move on to Mathis specifically. Aside from general personality unpleasantness (because let’s face it. No matter how you slice it, this dude is an asshole), what does he actually do wrong? 1] burn down the Milton schoolhouse. Uncertain whether or not the convicts did this. Geomagnetically induced currents have been known to cause fires (which also occurs in canon, as power lines can be seen lighting on fire in the opening credits), so it’s also very possible that the people inside there just got unlucky. It’s also very possible that even if the convicts did do it, Mathis specifically was uninvolved. Too uncertain to give him points. 2] try to attack Grey Mother and Astrid. Neither of the convicts who did this were part of the main crew (they are also now dead), and while Mathis does seem to be a leader, we have no reason to think he ordered these things. Hobbs’s smug demeanor would suggest the opposite actually. Possibly Mathis’s fault, but unlikely. 3] kill the woman in the dam. While seems unlikely that the woman was Molly, considering Mathis described the woman as screaming, which does not seem like Molly’s reaction upon spotting him, it’s also very possible that Mathis was just straight up lying about that. Regardless, at least two of his guys (Hobbs and Leclerc) have been murdered since the bus crash. At this point, the convicts are likely running on the assumption that anyone they come across is a threat and should be dealt with accordingly. Which leads us into 4] knocking out Mackenzie. Potential threat. Enough said. Though the fact that he killed the woman and knocked out Mackenzie suggests, to me, that there’s something more there than just her being annoying, because at the point of Mackenzie being knocked out, Mathis doesn’t know that he could be useful. 5] kidnapping Mackenzie. Mathis has just had a very convenient escape from the island fall right into his lap, holding a very alluring and shiny mystery box. Not right, but understandable. 6] beat up and kill Franklin. Franklin says they have history, that he was warden at a prison Mathis was in on the Mainland. In addition, Franklin’s description says that, “no one is more aware of the notorious prison’s dark history than its Warden.” He believes all of this to be reasonable punishment, as in his mind, “the worst of the worst end up with him at Blackrock”. He has at the very least turned a blind eye towards, if not actively facilitated all of the previously mentioned torture done to inmates at Blackrock. And Mathis believes Franklin is standing between him and his son. Probably the most justified thing he does. 7] misogyny towards Jace. His son just got blown up and he’s enraged at the people he believes are at fault. Still, unequivocally his fault and bad. 8] attacking Mackenzie with a hatchet and vowing to destroy everything he loves. See 7.
Let’s compare this to another morally complex character we have: Molly. She also kills (minimum) two people; one who we have pretty solid textual evidence was a piece of shit (husband), and one who we know very little about (Leclerc). She keeps our player character locked up but releases them when she needs help, much like Mathis. They’re not exactly the same, ofc, because Molly saves Astrid’s life and Mathis, you know, actively endangers Mackenzie’s. But if Mackenzie had been in that same situation, it’s pretty clear that Molly would have left him to die (see: her not even checking that dude in the car in the opening cutscene, and her “I hope to never meet him” after Astrid says Mackenzie is a good man). They’re not on even ground, morally speaking, but they’re not too far off.
So why does the story portray them so differently? It’s pretty clear to me that we’re supposed to sympathize with Molly. And I absolutely do. I think she was absolutely right to let her husband get eaten by wolves. But what separates that from Mathis beating Franklin to death for facilitating the abuse of his son and the dozens of other inmates at Blackrock? Is it the fact that he actually did it instead of just letting it happen? Is it the fact that the player character knew Franklin, even a little bit? Is it the fact that he’s a convict? Mathis’s description quite literally calls him, “an evil bastard”. Which I’m not necessarily even denying. Morality is a spectrum and evil is an arbitrary and subjective line on that spectrum. But it still sits strangely with me. Molly’s describes her as a simple farmer who likes tea. Franklin’s describes him as an administrator who “got caught up in Mathis’s deadly schemes”.
At first glance, these descriptions, the music stings, and the general vibes the game has seem incongruous with the information we’re given about these characters, but as I look further into it, it feels intentional. Because the main difference that we the player get between Mathis and Molly is their treatment of our character. The characters with in game descriptions that make them out to be evil and bad and that’s it are the ones we get a bad first impression of: Hobbs and Mathis. We get a good first impression of Molly, Methuselah, and Father Thomas, whose descriptions all have a more positive tone. Jeremiah and Franklin’s are pretty neutral, which makes sense, considering they’re rude and dismissive but technically helpful. I’m probably kinda dumb for not recognizing this, but the music swells at key moments (such as when Franklin is wheeled out on the stretcher), these descriptions, everything we get that isn’t canon as being within the world… they’re extensions of Astrid and Mackenzie. Of how they see the world. Molly is given depth because Astrid is looking for it. Mathis isn’t because Mackenzie isn’t looking for it. Which is pretty neat.
I am definitely still miffed about how “convict” ends up being synonymous with “evil” tho. Please episode 5 have one of them switch sides and be my buddy I know this won’t happen but plz. I think Mackenzie should be buddies with Vachon.

BAD BUDDY EPISODE 10 – JOKE’S ASIDE, AND PRAN STEPS BOLDLY FORWARD
Tumblr media
Pat’s public confession scene (Ep.10 [1I4] 9:47) hides meanings in many different layers, and with so much subtext touching on a diversity of ideas (more explanation here), I wasn’t expecting to find any more hidden messaging. But there is a tiny bit more. 😊 Hiding in plain sight are some small but significant details that elaborate on the story of Pran’s growth and how he finally breaks out of his shell to live his emotional life out in the open…
Tumblr media
Although it’s Pat doing most of the shouting, this scene (a wedding of sorts, explained in the link above) is important because it is the first time Pran boldly acknowledges their couplehood out loud in public, without any hesitation and perhaps even with a note of pride. His previous diffidence had less to do with the fact that theirs is a gay relationship (for Bad Buddy is set in a world without homophobia) and more to do with Pran’s almost pathological instinct for always wanting to keep his emotions battened down and out of sight.
But even as we watch the very public display of Pran stepping assertively into the limelight at Ep.10 [1I4] 12.17, coursing beneath the surface are undercurrents of subtext that link this scene with two others, one at the end of Ep.1 and the other at the start of Ep.5. When read together, they reveal details that help to explain the meaning behind Pat’s public password reveal and the role of Pran’s fifth-year peer mentor, Joke (whose appearance here is more than just a random clownish cameo 😉).
The Ep.1 [4/4] scene beginning at timestamp 7.04, with Pat and Pran wrangling on how best to be admitted into each other’s mobile phones, shows us that their devices are also a metaphor for their hearts and minds (explained here).

And when Pat asks for Pran’s password at Ep.5 [1I4] 5.22 (which is also a metaphor for intra-couple consent) the digital echoes of Ep.1 [4/4] tell us that Pran’s computer is another symbol for his inner world – the protection that Pran’s passwords provide for his computer also mirrors how Pran resorts to all sorts of defenses to protect his heart and his feelings from dangers outside.
One motif that we see in Bad Buddy up until Ep.10 is how Pran had always lived his life under the protection of some sort of gatekeeper or guardian. His mom was the very first, shielding Pran from the threat of Ming and his family (see Ep.1 [1I4] 14.22, Ep.2 [4/4] 7.23 and Ep.6 [1I4] 8.24 for some examples). But outside the family home and away from Dissaya’s protective influence, Pran relied on other defensive measures instead. At his student apartment, the giant smiley on the door (e.g., Ep.4 [3I4] 5.41) fulfilled much the same function, providing psychological comfort in the guise of a benevolent door-guarding talisman (explained here with a reference to one of Director Backaof’s earlier dramas).
Tumblr media
Part of me also wonders if Pran depended on Wai as a protector of sorts when he was sent away to boarding school, since Wai’s bellicose nature also parallels Dissaya’s (and we know Dissaya adores Wai from Ep.5 [2/4] 13.37, suggesting a kindred connection in spirit between these two hot-heads of different generations). This would explain Pran’s unwavering loyalty to Wai in the present day (e.g., demonstrated at Ep.1 [1I4] 2.34, Ep.9 [1I4] 7.20 and Ep.9 [2/4] 6.08), even though he’s admittedly difficult to like or love.
And so, knowing that the metaphor for Pran’s inner world (his computer) was also protected by guardians (his passwords), we need to take a closer look to see who else was watching over Pran’s heart... 😉
When Pran tells Pat that his password is “Pransocool” at Ep.5 [1I4] 5.24, it looks at first like code spun from his user ID “Pranrakul” that we see on the screen, itself a moniker derived from his actual name “Pran Parakul”. But this is also where the subtitles lead us astray (for the second time in this scene – the other instance is at Ep.5 [1I4] 4.40, with significance for Ep.6, and explained here). Pat’s question regarding the password is translated as “Are you a fan of So Cool band?”, a bit of transformative license that is a step away from the actual Thai. For if you listen carefully to Pat’s question, what he actually says in place of “So Cool” is “Brajao Joke” – and he then proceeds to address Pran as “Brajao Pran” at Ep.5 [1I4] 5.54, chortling gleefully at this newly-bestowed title.
Tumblr media
The band reference is relevant, in that Brajao Joke (บร๊ะเจ้าโจ๊ก) was the vocalist and leader of the popular Thai rock band So Cool from the mid-noughties. (So Cool's song Farewell Party is also referenced directly at Ep.12 [4/4] 14.20 during PatPran's drinking game on Pat’s apartment terrace.)
Tumblr media
(above) A still from the music video (a touching mini-movie, really) for So Cool's song สิ่งมีชีวิตที่คิดได้และเจ็บเป็น, dating from their last album and showing the band in a later incarnation
Brajao Joke’s real name is Joke Kornpop Chancharoen (โจ๊ก กรภพ จันทร์เจริญ) and as his nickname of “Joke” suggests, his image is one of a lovable, unfiltered, rule-breaking rascal – like one of the boys from MTV’s Jackass perhaps, that granddaddy of all don’t-try-this-at-home pranksterhood reality shows (So Cool also dates from roughly the same era 😉).
The “Brajao” part of Brajao Joke’s name (“บร๊ะเจ้า”) is also interesting – it’s a made-up honorific coined by Joke Kornpop’s devoted fans that is surprisingly rich in semantic sleight. They took the word “พระเจ้า” (pronounced more like “Phrajao”, different from the “บร๊ะเจ้า” in Brajao Joke) that online dictionaries tell me means “God” (and is sometimes also used for royalty) and replaced the first bit with “บร๊ะ”, which is the Thai rendition of “Bro” or “Bruh”. The second bit “เจ้า” (“jao”, retained in the neologism) has many meanings related to venerated high station, including “prince; princess; ruler; esteemed person; lord; master; holy being” and “one who is very skilled or well-versed (in)” – see http://www.thai-language.com/id/133083 for more details. So the honorific “Brajao” carries some sense of “Bro with God-like status”, and “Brajao Joke” (“บร๊ะเจ้าโจ๊ก”) is variously translated as “Joke the God” or “The Jokester God”.
After the disbandment of So Cool, Brajao Joke stayed on in the public eye as a popular YouTuber and a proud dad, and also acts in dramas. He still maintains his image of the loud clown given to bouts of (harmless, if potent) jackassery (always looking a little under the influence, when he’s really – probably – just high on life).
Tumblr media
(top left) Brajao Joke from the early 2000s; (top right) Brajao Joke in April 2022 on his Facebook; (second row from top) one of Brajao Joke's signature pranks – closing his eyes to reveal some message or mantra on his eyelids; (second row from bottom) a still from Brajao Joke's cameo in the 2011 Thai movie “SuckSeed” – the words on his eyelids are a rude insult directed at the protagonists; (bottom) Brajao Joke goofing off in July 2021 on his Facebook
Google translates “บร๊ะเจ้า” (“Brajao”) as “Oh my god” and the suggestion of exclamatory horror is not wildly inappropriate given Brajao Joke’s hijinks when seen against the expected decorum of strait-laced Thai society. In Thailand, where the culture dictates different levels of formality in different social situations (and the Land of Smiles is mostly polite society) Brajao Joke stands out because he projects his irreverent, rough-hewn, authentic self all the time.
Brajao Joke is also known as “Joke So Cool” (see his MyDramaList page), and this explains why “Pransocool” makes Pat chuckle with such relish at Ep.5 [1I4] 5.44 and 5.54 – in Ep.1 [4/4] Pran had made fun of his chat ID “PatInwza55+” that contained a reference to Pat being god-like, and which is also seen as childish word-play (more information in the Ep.1 [4/4] mobile phone scene analysis mentioned above). In Ep.5 [1I4] Pran’s been caught out with a jokey god-like self-reference in his own computer password, and his embarrassment is obvious. Pat calling him “Brajao Pran” is also funny because the OTT image of Brajao Joke/Joke So Cool is quite the polar opposite of prim and proper Pran, who tries hard all the time not to breach social codes.
From the password referencing Joke So Cool that protects Pran’s computer, we know that in the non-virtual world the protector of Pran’s heart would have to be some version of avatar Brajao Joke’s real-life counterpart – and this is where the other individual in Pran’s life named Joke (his loud, brash, transgressively-tipsy and larger-than-life peer mentor) comes into play.
Tumblr media
Although the scene beginning Ep.10 [1I4] 9.57 is the only time that we actually witness senior Joke looking out for Pran, we can infer from Ink’s watchful, protective peer mentoring while Pa navigated the uncertainties of freshman year (even discounting any romantic intentions in the mix, e.g., at Ep.7 [1I4] 8.15 and Ep.7 [2/4] 0.52) that Pran would have been safely under Joke’s wing during his time as a newbie too. And from the robust, intrusive interrogation that Pat is subjected to, we can see that Joke continues to take his role as protector of Pran’s heart very seriously, so much so that he’s still a fearsome, volatile Papa Bear standing guard in front of his little cub here, despite the fact that Pran’s no longer a first-year.
The picture that emerges from this is more than just a little poignant, and my heart goes out a tiny bit to our sensitive Pran. We are being told how much he needed to bolster his psychological defenses with the protection of some (purportedly) higher being, everywhere and all the time. At home Pran looked to Dissaya as his protector; at boarding school Wai (probably) played that role; in his student apartment (his home away from home) he had his door guardian smiley; and at SouthTechnology University (or at least at the Architecture Faculty) Pran had Joke, his mentor from three years ahead, as a belligerent watchdog standing sentinel. And just as his computer password referenced a protective brother (the “บร๊ะ” part of “Brajao”), his chat ID “por.pran” revealed at Ep.1 [1I4] 7.55 makes me think that Pran may also have been invoking the protection of his dad for his mobile phone, since the Thai word for “father” (“พ่อ”) is pronounced something like “por” but with the r silent – Pran also references the need for Pat to obtain his dad’s permission at Ep.7 [1I4] 2.31, which in turn echoes mentor Joke’s goading of Pat at Ep.10 [1I4] 10.39. (I would also argue that for most other places Pran’s hobo bag, with its double P graphic that stood for Pat+Pran quietly broadcasting his love for Pat even while it masqueraded as a single P for Pran, also served as his emotional crutch – a grown-up security blanket – to help shield him psychologically from the world.)
Tumblr media
So no wonder protector Joke aggressively tells outsider Pat at Ep.10 [1I4] 10.39 “I don’t remember you asking my permission to love my dear brother.” And although Pat asks for this permission at Ep.10 [1I4] 10.46, significantly we don’t (ever) see Joke actually granting it. Instead, he challenges Pat to prove he really knows Pran, which Pat does by divulging his personal information. This, of course, leads to the password reveal at Ep.10 [1I4] 11.35, and Pat’s disclosure that “Pransocool” has changed to “Praninlove” marks a key shift – for Joke then appears to accept that Pat’s love exists, and challenges him to shout it out. And just as Brajao Joke (referenced by “Pransocool”) has been replaced as protector of Pran’s computer by “Praninlove”, we see that Pat’s love has replaced Pran’s reliance on outside guardians in real life, as Pran steps boldly forward while peer mentor Joke simultaneously moves off to the side and out of view (at Ep.10 [1I4] 12.20).
From this point onward it’s Pran confidently taking control of the situation. Instead of relying on Joke to steer the proceedings of his own wedding – and no longer needing him (or anyone else) to grant permission with regard to matters of his own heart – Pran is now the one issuing khan maak challenges to Pat, advancing down the stairs to meet him halfway, where he speaks for himself (accepting Pat’s proposal by saying “It’s a yes”) before they formalize their union with a fist bump. 😊💖
Tumblr media
Thus it all comes together on the steps of the Architecture Faculty – as “Praninlove” has replaced “Pransocool”, Brajao Joke (the pseudo-deity whose title is a corruption of the godly “พระเจ้า” or “Phrajao”) is retired from guard duty even as mentor Joke steps aside. And Pran (giving up his reliance on false gods and other guardians) strides forward as pilot and protector of his own heart, having finally unearthed the courage to be honest about his feelings, after finding his ultimate emotional refuge in the safe harbor and forever home of Pat’s love instead. 💖💖💖

King's Quest VI: Heir Today Gone Tomorrow | Part 3
Tumblr media
The Adventurer’s Log
King’s Quest VI: Heir Today Gone Tomorrow Part 3
Time for more Isle of Wonder! And another conversation with good ol' Jollo.
Tumblr media
There are a number of things to deal with on this screen: the baby plants-baby tears, the tomatoes, the snapdragons, the wallflowers up in the right corner there beside the gate, the hole in the wall beside them and on the left side of the gate, clinging vines.
After some general examination of things I went for the tomatoes first, specifically the grumpy tomato on the ground there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course I wasn't gonna let this ol' rotten tomato sit and rot alone. Into then inventory he went, where you can still talk to him.
Tumblr media
That's a healthy adventurer's inventory, sir! One more item and I'll have to scroll!
I then took a peek at the hole in the wall, or rather, through the hole in the wall.
Tumblr media
The land beyond the gate: a giant wavy chessboard.
I wasn't quite ready to go through the gate yet though. First I talked to the clinging vines. They just want to "LIKed" and "HUGged" and can't go anywhere because they're clinging vines, not exactly mobile. If you try to touch them... well, they cling.
Tumblr media
Clung to death...
Tumblr media
After reloading I attempted to pick up the hole in the wall, but it darts to a spot behind the wallflowers. The wallflowers are naturally shy and cluster together when you get close so you can't take the hole. And the snapdragons snap threateningly at you for bothering the wallflowers too.
So, for now, I moved on beyond the gate to Chessboard Land as informed by the guarding knights.
Tumblr media
Very quickly said queens arrive but they're in the midst of an argument over who shall get to have a lump of coal to gift to the vizier and the princess for their wedding present.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some important info here in regards to the singing stone as we've been told that the treasures of the Green Isles had been stolen, starting all the feuding between the islands. Well, that and arguing the virtues of coal versus a spoiled egg as presents for the vizier (and the princess, sorry Cassima?) has its own entertainment.
They try to get Alexander to decide but he avoids the whole thing with attempted diplomacy stating he's partial to both red AND white and is sorry, but afraid he can't solve their problem. One of them will have to be gracious and let the other have the coal.
They think that's a 'ridiculously stupid idea.' and hop back away down the road, though not before Red drops her scarf.
Of course the scarf can be taken and if you try to give it to the knights they inform you that the Red Queen is always dropping her scarfs and thinks it's fashionable, so just be honoured and keep it.
Sadly, you can never go further into Chessboard Land. I know there's only so much a game can have, but it's right there! So tantalizingly close.
There wasn't much more I could do on this island with what I had so I popped back to town. My main goal was the pawn shoppe to get the flute next, but I stopped first at the book shop because I remembered there was a book on the owner's counter I never tried to get.
Turns out it was good I stopped by because Jollo was back again too. Talking to him I learned that wedding proclamations have gone up. Jollo gives a little more info about the vizier--that Abdul Alhazred had first come around 15 years ago and wormed his way into the king's trust. Alexander is concerned for Cassima's safety and Jollo wasn't entirely reassuring in not knowing if she'd be safe or not though figured the vizier would rather keep her as wife. However, he's the sort who would use her to his best advantage.
As for the book:
Tumblr media
It's a book of spells. The shopkeeper wants another book in trade. So, I'll need to find something of interest to trade for it. Alexander's got another bout of incidental wizardry coming his way I suppose.
At the pawn shoppe I ran into the robed 'man'--clear by now who he really is after that scene with the vizier and Shamir--getting mad that the candy dish is empty. No more mint for him and he stomps out.
I traded the mechanical nightingale back for the flute--not before attempting to trade the rotten tomato only to get a message that it wouldn't appreciate being traded at a pawn shop. I tried some of my other items as well for various denials from the shop keeper.
Outside, I found one of the wedding proclamations:
Tumblr media
Wedding and coronation oh my. Not looking so good for Alexander's crush here, or poor Cassima.
I went back to the Isle of Wonder because it's time to get that hole in the wall, not that I have any purpose for the hole in the wall right now, but when you see a thing to be gotten you get that thing! It'll be needed later.
I put the flute to use!
With the wallflowers busy in their dance I was able to pick up the hole.
Tumblr media
I then realized I'd miss a route from the beach where the horrible gnomes were and that took me to this place.
Tumblr media
Books, books, books! But first I checked out that web with the big spider.
Tumblr media
A very uh, flirtatious spider, but also there's parchment in that web. If you try to touch anything though she comes over and bites you and Alexander racks up another death. A widow after all...
I wasn't quite sure what to do here just yet, so let things be for now.
Instead I tried poking at all those book only to draw the ire of their owner, the book worm.
Tumblr media
We need a rare book to trade for the spell book at the book shop, and this certainly seems to be the place to get one. Despite what the book worm says here, he is willing to trade for something interesting enough. Such as
Tumblr media
or an idiosyncrasy among other things I didn't have. Alexander could only refuse each of them while two others fellows popped up to to chime in, but we are assured not to pay them any mind.
Tumblr media
Did I mention I love the Isle of Wonders? I love the Isle of Wonders. So much silliness like this here.
There wasn't much more I could do here for the moment but I realized that while I saw the lettuce in the screen with all the flowers, but forgot to pick any up. It's icy cold lettuce, iceberg lettuce perhaps.
And there's that boiling pool at the Isle of the Beast. Yeah I went back, tossed the lettuce in and it became cool enough to get though, although still hot enough to be uncomfortable. Alexander was doing the hot hot hot jumpy walk through it. But on the other side I found both an old hunter's lamp and this fellow.
Tumblr media
He didn't trust me at first but once I gave him that string of words he was ready to talk. And, indeed, he is a dangling participle who flew from home and got lost. He let me pick him and I went a little further down the path to here.
Tumblr media
And a not at all suspicious gardener who's certainly not a genie trying to lure Alexander to another untimely demise. That would and has never happened already. Drowning, what drowning? Those statues are totally safe.
Tumblr media
Yeah, of course I went for it and got killed. I got rewarded with a groaner.
Anyway, if you leave instead he gets mad and disappears in a poof of smoke. Yep, nothing weird there at all.
I went back to the book worm who was very happy to see the dangling participle returned and gave me a rare book of riddles. One page was torn that had Alexander very fascinated by what the question and answer were. But, we need that spell book so I went back and traded it in at the bookshop. The spell book has three spells all requiring various ingredients, much like the third game, but all things I don't have yet. The spells are Make Rain, Magic Paint Spell and Charm the Creatures of the Night.
I still had that black widow to deal with so I tried one more time and found there was a thread of web to pull that unravels some of her web causing her to go over to the hole. Unfortunately, I took too long to grab the parchment while she was distracting and got poisoned and killed by her again. I think that was my first accidental death in this game.
I was successful the second time and the scrap looked like it was from the riddle book, but only had the answer: Love. Then it was blown away but Alexander committed it to memory--given his current lovesick situation, an easy thing to do.
With the Isle of Wonders tied up for now (more to come in future!) I'll end it here. I'll probably go further into the Isle of the Beast next time, since I already went part way.

Crash Course in Romance episode 1 recap: The love-hate relationships are back!
Tumblr media
Love-hate relationships are captivating. Add a past connection, a little misunderstanding, and a short-lived crush, and we are in for a ride. Our fine-as-hell maths instructor, whose life has only been about work so far, is about to get sucked into a sweet romance with our former athlete, who happens to be the only one who can make food to his liking.
Crash Course in Romance episode 1: Meeting our hero
Our hero, Choi Chi-yeol, is a top maths instructor with looks to die for, over-the-top confidence, and a unique kick signature pose. Needless to say, loads of parents line up in front of the academy to ensure they enrol their children's names in his class. Chi-yeol's nickname is trillion won star since it is the sum of money he earns yearly. Unfortunately, however much Chi-yeol earns, he seems to enjoy his life less since all he does is work without breaks. Claiming to prefer a natural approach, Chi-yeol refuses to go on blind dates. His so-called natural approach means that he would instead not meet anyone since, according to him, anything but work seems a waste of time. To make matters worse, Chi-yeol can't even sleep well (because of being plagued by a nightmare about an accident we have yet to learn about) and suffers from an eating disorder, where he gets nauseous as soon as he takes a single bite. Being the equivalent BTS of the private education means having a lot of fan girls. But when an adamant fangirl barges into Chi-yeol's home with cookies, and they get photographed, when Chi-yeol calls a cab for her while she keeps forcing a hug on him, the situation turns into a scandal with lots of rumours. And people are now divided between trusting Chi-yeol and badmouthing him. Things are even worse after the student posts a picture of them during class, claiming they are dating. ALSO READ: 12 Korean Drama OSTs That Every Kdrama Enthusiasts Know By Heart (2023)
Crash Course in Romance episode 1: A hilarious coincidence
For probably the first time in his life, Chi-yeol cancels his class, not because of the scandal, but because he is sick, which should be kept a secret from students and their parents. At the hospital, he runs into our heroine, Nan Haeng-soon, in the most hilarious way ever. Haeng-soon is a former athlete who opened a side dishes store after quitting handball. Haeng-soon's family includes her high school daughter, Nam Hae-yi, her autistic brother, Nam Jae-woo, and her long-time best friend, Kim Young-Joo, who also works with her in the side dishes store. We learn that Jae-woo has a congenital medical condition, which makes even having a fever fatal to him, so as soon as Jae-woo's temperature rises, Haeng-soon accompanies him to the hospital and stays by his side all night. Jae-woo happens to take a unique interest in predators, especially tigers, so when he spots a tiger figure on the back of Chi-yeol's jacket, Jae-woo can't help but take a picture of the tiger. Mistaking the situation for Jae-woo taking a picture of him, Chi-yeol starts yelling at Jae-woo to delete the photos and tries to snatch the phone, which gets Jae-woo scared. Worried about her brother, Haeng-soon meddles in, telling Chi-yeol to stop and return the phone. Soon after, they both engage in a hilarious chase that ends with Haeng-soon barging into the men's room before getting kicked out by the security guard. Having spotted the tiger's picture, the misunderstanding is cleared for Chi-yeol. But instead of apologizing, he throws the phone for Haeng-soon to catch. The phone's screen gets broken, and Haeng-soon is now bent on teaching the mobile thief a lesson. ALSO READ: 6 best inspirational K-Dramas to keep us motivated in 2023
Crash Course in Romance episode 1: A dive into our heroine's life
The phone isn't Haeng-soon's only current worry since Hae-Yi is acting out of character out of the blue. To the point, she starts yelling at Haeng-soon for not acting like other mothers. Be it giving her rides when it is raining, helping her with her assignments, and having the same information about her education other mothers have. To my utter shock, Hae-yi calls Haeng-soon aunt, not mother, before she storms out. Is Hae-yi her niece and not daughter, as we are led to believe? Hae-yi has her reasons for being on edge. She has hit her limits, studying independently without taking any private classes, but she can't handle it anymore. Especially with maths, she needs to take after-school classes with a particular instructor, Chi-yeol, to raise her grades. Hae-yi is reluctant to bring up the topic in front of the hard-working Haeng-soon since she is tough taking care of Hae-yi and Jae-woo. But how can Haeng-soon know about the situation if Hae-yi doesn't tell her? Luckily, the fight isn't dragged out. Haeng-soon seeks Hae-yi out, and they have a heart-to-heart where Hae-yi tells Haeng-soon the truth about finding it hard to keep up with her maths studies and wanting to enrol in the private academy. Haeng-soon listens with patience and understanding, promising to enrol Hae-yi in the next class of Chi-yeol, who, unbeknownst to them, is currently enjoying the side dishes his righthand man, Ji Dong-hee, buys him from Haeng-soon's store. All in all, I enjoyed the premiere. The drama got off on the right foot, introducing us to the main characters and setting the groundwork for what is yet to come. Jung Kyoung-Ho is slaying it as Chi-yeol. I had a crush on him since Hospital Playlist, but it is getting even worse that I am seriously considering joining his class like Hae-Yi.
