It's practically Hogswatch so lets ramble about the Sto Helit family!!!

Despite how dormant my Discworld writing is atm Im always full of Thoughts, and much like with Moist von Lipwig, if I sit and think too long about the Sto Helits and Death family I just find myself emotionally compromised

They're so needlessly wacky and dysfunctional I swear!!

Anyways one of these days within the ♬ﾟThe Sto Helit Family ♪♪♪♪ [snap snap] series I'm going to write several 'little' fics exploring Ysabell and Lady Sybil's friendship - I'm convinced they were at least penpals (and that they met during Ysabell and Mort's wedding) And with that leads to so many IMPLICATIONS and juicy tidbits to discover

Like...were they at Sybil and Vimes's wedding? Were they there?!?! Was it them that suggested to Death to try and be more approachable (causing him to try doing knock knock jokes of all things??)

Textually we don't know, obviously, there is only one small throw away line in Men at Arms that hints to Lady Sybil's friendship with the Duke and Duchess of Sto Helit (when she's telling Sam she knows a nice young couple in search of a new captain of the guard)

But in my little sand box world we are taking that line and Firmly Grasping It haha

Also, because I think it would be absolutely uncomfortably hilarious, I would LOVE to find the time to write Dinner Party Fic - in which Ysabell and Mort attend a fancy dinner party (either hosted by them, or at the Ramkin estate) where there's a death at the party which turns into a very quirky Who Done It. Cue Vimes considering Mort as suspect number 1, much to Sybil's chagrin, and Death finding this very interesting indeed. Spoiler, it wasn't Mort lol I don't know still who the real perpetrator will be...tempted to make it natural causes hahaha

Anyways here's a little snippet:

Vimes observed this so called Duke, he had been to many of his wife’s dinner parties and felt that he Knew The Type - yet this Duke didn’t seem very, well, Duke-y. That is to say, the Duke of Sto Helit didn’t fill out the first imagined picture that would pop into his head when he thought Duke. Instead the picture was more ‘flying by the seat of my pants’-esque. Vimes grinned. This was interesting. Sure the Duke of Sto Helit occasionally looked around like he was searching for a handbook on how to be a nob, but ever so often he would give a Look. Not like the sort Assasins would give which was calculating how much it would cost to get you killed, but something all together different. The cost didn’t matter it was bound to happen eventually.

Also ALSO imagine after Ysabell and Mort's death, in which Sybil tries to reach out to Susan OOF I don't think that would be easy.

Yet through it all, I think it would be funny if Vimes doesn't fully Get that the Sto Helits have a literal connection to Death, like yeah there's rumors and a little blurb in Twerps Peerage we know textually exists due to Hogfather - but would Vimes even want to know? Or care?? Despite Vimes and Death's continuous 'near Vimes experiences'?? I haven't decided yet! We'll figure that out together I suppose haha

in OTHER news... here's a The Runaway's Gamble spoiler presented with little to no context!

Why do I act how I act. Just... why? Why did I freeze up whilst talking to him? Why did I run my stupid fucking mouth? Honestly, at this point, I don't think I should ever speak again. The more I think, the higher this weird-but-all-too-familiar, heavy feeling of shame bubbles up from the pit of my stomach, through my chest and up to my throat. It chokes me and crushes my lungs. It fucking hurts. And frankly, I'm struggling to fucking handle it.

*ping!*

The noise from my phone distatracts me from my thoughts ; I run a hand through my matted hair and pick it up to read the notification. It feels cold and small in my hand, and my room still feels as dull as ever even with light beaming from the screen. It stings my eyes a little, attempting to pull out some tears, but to no avail.

Kang Taehyun - Hey. You awake? I can't sleep.

Oh?

I can't help but to smile over the fact that it was me he chose to message. Like, sure, maybe he messaged Yeonjun or Kai too, but I'm secretly hoping he didn't. The thought of being someone's first choice for once makes my heart swell.

I think for a second about what to say, then I reply.

Me - hey :) i am awake yes, i usually don't sleep on a night unless I'm really tired. how come you can't sleep?

He responds right away, which I'm thankful for, because it doesn't give me any time to overthink the tone of my message.

Kang Taehyun - Great, now I know who I can message when I can't sleep lol. I don't know, just stressed, I guess.

I frown. I hope he's not going through anything too serious. Before I can type a response, he sends another message.

Kang Taehyun - Well if you're not tired, would you like to hang out? We can sit on the rooftop of the garage next to our accomodation site and watch the sunrise.

Simultaniously, my whole body relaxes and a huge knot forms in my stomach. I'm so surprised that he'd want to hang out with me alone. The only time we've been alone together is yesterday, and I acted like an absolute knob. However... the way Taehyun acted about it does reassure me - maybe he didn't judge me at all? Maybe nobody judges me as much as I think they do. Some people anyway. Not everyone has the wit and intuition of Kang Taehyun.

Kang Taehyun - Great. Meet you in 5?

Another quick response. The feeling settles a little bit ; it mellows out into more of a general pain, kind of sinking into my bones rather than stabbing at all of my vital organs. It feels better. Not by much, but it's something.

Me - sure :)

After pressing send, I lock my phone and set it down. I pick up my earlier-discarded black jeans from the floor and tug them on over my boxers, then pull on some random wool-blend check flannel over the t-shirt I'm already wearing. I ruffle my hair a bit, but don't look in the mirror. I don't need extra insecurity over the agonizing anxiety I'm already feeling.

My heart speeds up, and I rub my eyes to try and rid them of the gravelly rawness that's built up from my frequent all nighters. As always, it doesn't work, but at least I feel like I'm doing something.

As quiet as possible so I don't wake my sleeping housemate, I slip out of my bedroom door and close it gently behind me. I practically tiptoe through the house and out of the front door - kinda like a cartoon character.

Then, on I go, on my way to meet Kang Taehyun.

WIP fantasy AU i copypasted from the rp blog

( for some background, the flames of the earth are the magic-esque system used everywhere else in fantasy AU world. )

there is this one country with extreme weather.

when it was founded, the settlers were determined to stay there, but the weather was just inhospitable to human life.

fortunately for them, the Sky exists! a vague entity, everywhere and nowhere, comparable to a deity but without any concrete concept or shape or form. it's not something anyone really understands, but it exists and that's what matters.

unfortunately, those people who understood were more or less sacrificed into a role vaguely like a mix of deity and interpreter. like they have to translate whatever the Sky's will (?) is at any given time into language everyone else actually understands.

so this country was founded when the settlers and the Sky shook hands and the flames of the sky were made. the settlers could learn to deal with the extreme weather though those flames.

the Sky is a big ? and it's not going to really be able to communicate with these human settlers because it is not anything even remotely like people lmao. definitely doesn't use a language, thats for sure lol.

some people would be more... capable of understanding... than others, and that's who ultimately made the 🤝.

... but the method used is a little sad.

those were the deities/people who were there hovering over the (metaphorical) campfire while settlers were trying to figure out what the hell to do with the Sky's will and these deities and how to actually survive all the extreme weather.

the flames of the earth are a thing, so they were like "okay let's just do seven flame types like that."

thus, they figured out 7 deities to match having 7 types of sky flames, which are the AU versions of the canon arcobaleno.

guess who was the original sky arcobaleno!

♪ ♪ ♪

... unfortunately, he got demoted when sepira came along.

he's no longer an arcobaleno but had already been sacrificed? he still exists as a deity/interpreter but now is not an interpreter at all. still has exactly the same deific flame powers he had as an arcobaleno. but he just. doesn't. have anything to do with them... so.

( he's likely very bitter/salty toward sepira, luce, aria, uni and the country itself, but i digress. )

so he just packs up in the same mortal form he had before and wanders the world as a guy in his late teens... except he's stuck that way for as long as he lives.

as a result, showing off his sky flame powers... he really didn't look that special. his flames could be attributed to some kind of variant earth flame, though it wasn't exactly applicable. ( his relative haughtiness did not help. )

like, i'm sure there were some cultures who did take notice (hello gladiator-style games) but really, he was just one dude with some unconventional flames. wasn't taken seriously. wasn't put in any war fronts. (he might've been seen by a royal family to miraculously heal the ailing sole heir or something like that, though?)

but he was never 100% believed. he still wasn't exactly treated the way he was used to. miracle =/= god. no matter where he went, eventually someone started thinking he's delusional for saying something like that. even the few who initially did. even a few who got attached eventually were not there for long, whether they intended to or not. [ wip ]

at some point, he figured all of it out. probably too late to recover from. he's seen so much of the world now and yet, nowhere he went had truly kept him. there was always something.

eventually, he was like "Okay, I don't care about people, or humans, or the world, the sky, that country, anything." he's done with the whole thing. he's over it.

over time, the country's totally different flame system was understood in the rest of the world as a thing that exists, even if there are very few people who have/use them out there in the world. so it turns out that guy a while back was genuine? the real thing? all those miracles and unusual flames that were attributed to Other Things were actually legit?

but he'd left long before any of it was acknowledged, so now he's in a cool little temple-like area high on top of a mountain being a hermit. like this:

i bet he has a good enough time contemplating the nature of existence or something while being a... disney princess with the wildlife around. without an earth flame, he can't be one with nature so just gonna vibe and pet wild animals and grow plants or something.

( there's definitely more in the lil AU here but i just don't want to add to this post that much right now )

we already knew captain america civil war was a bad movie but god damn, the conflict here and the sheer… actual writing behind it -- did civil war even have a plot besides "tony stark can't forgive a guy who was being mind-controlled"? I do not remember. I think in the comics it was a whole thing about whether supers should be registered and tracked and stuff?

Firstly I'll write about my thoughts on the live

Seriously、it passed by in the blink of an eye！

I'm exhausted now、、、、！

I really feel like I did my absolute bestー。

It was fun！！！！！！

Kiki's dress、made her look really beautiful✨

Seeing her made me teary

I thought she'd wear a dress in her member colour so seeing such a grown-up Kiki surprised me

I guess we've both become adults😌

I used up all of my strength、and I have absolutely no regrets！！！

I had fun！！Thank you！

Congrats on your graduation ！

For these 9-ish years、well done for working so hard😌🤍

We've been friends since auditions、and at that time we were 13 and 14 years old、but before realising it we're now both in our 20s笑lol

Yesterday our audition group gathered together、and I was surprised by how much smaller our group has become

I'm the youngest out of us、and although I'm prepared to see my older sisters graduating before me、I can't believe that Kiki's graduation has come so soon、but then at the same time I've really realised how much of an adult she's becomeー。

So？Did Kiki have a wonderful idol life？？

For Saori

Kiki is both my rival and my friend、and seeing Kiki in the centre position makes me really happy、my I also feel internally frustrated

I think this is something that's similar about us both

But without either of us saying anything、we show it through our actions、although maybe it's only us that notice it？笑lol

So that's how we've become the SaoKiki we are now、and I have no regrets about how we've been working hard together！

I hope I've been a positive influence for Kiki too！

Kiki deciding herself on her 「Graduation」、is really cool。

She made the decision while thinking not just about herself、but also about the group as a whole、which is something about Kiki that I really love。

Kiki really is a founding part of Tsubaki、and recently I've realised how much courage she must have needed

Once I was aware of her graduation whenever we were together、fun things、nostalgic things、tough things、all sorts of memories flashed into my mind

But I still don't have any regrets、I'm so truly glad that we've been able to be together！！！！

[ WIP fantasy AU preview? ]

for some background, the flames of the earth are the magic-esque system used everywhere else in fantasy AU world.

and there is this one country with extreme weather.

when it was founded, the settlers were determined but the weather was just inhospitable to human life.

fortunately for them, the Sky exists! a vague entity, everywhere and nowhere, comparable to a deity but without any concrete Concept or shape or form. it's not something anyone really understands but it exists and that's what matters.

the country was founded when the settlers and the Sky (handshake) and the flames of the sky were made. the settlers could learn to deal with the extreme weather though those flames.

... but the method of that (handshake) is a little sad.

the Sky is a big ? and it's not going to really be able to communicate with these human settlers because it is not anything even remotely like people lmao.

definitely doesn't use a language, thats for sure lol. some people would be more... capable of understanding... than others. that's who ultimately made the (handshake) people who initially understood it exists.

the flames of the earth are a thing, so they were like "okay let's just do seven flame types like that."

thus, they figured out 7 deities to match having 7 types of sky flames, which are the AU versions of the canon arcobaleno.

guess who was the original sky arcobaleno!

... unfortunately, he got demoted when sepira came along.

( he's likely very bitter/salty toward luce and the country itself, but i digress. )

so he just packs up in the same mortal form he had before and wanders the world as a guy in his late teens... except he's stuck that way for as long as he lives.

at some point, he figured all of it out. probably too late to recover from. he's seen so much of the world now and yet, nowhere he went had truly kept him. there was always something.

eventually, he was like "Okay, I don't care about people, or humans, or the world, the sky, that country, anything." he's done with the whole thing. he's over it.

eventually the country's totally different flame system was understood in the rest of the world as a thing that exists, even if there are very few people who have/use them out there in the world. so it turns out that guy a while back was genuine? the real thing? all those miracles and unusual flames that were attributed to Other Things were actually legit?

but that he'd left long before any of it was acknowledged, so now he's in a cool little temple-like area high on top of a mountain being a hermit. like this:

Not only that, but, as your relationship progresses, he tells you that he could lay beside you for hours, and not speak one word, but as long as you held his hand — he would feel loved. Even when you don’t see him for weeks on end, he lets you know that when you see each other he will be truly present and loving.

From walking in the park to waiting in a doctor’s office, holding hands is something Spencer likes to do almost anywhere. With the passing of time, you two get in the habit of giving hugs and small kisses before leaving home or when returning after several hours away. Whenever he has a tough case, you hold him close until his worries melt away. Using your fingers, you gently comb the curls away from his face while also gently stroking his scalp. You notice all the loving glances he casts your way every time you put your hand on his arms while he’s talking, letting him know you are listening. He even takes one of your slept-in T-shirts with him when he’s away on cases, so he can still enjoy your scent while he’s away.

You enjoy giving him presents. It doesn’t mean you drop large amounts of money on extravagant, luxury gifts for Spencer. Rather, it means giving him things you know for sure he’ll enjoy — a new edition of one of his favorite books, a funny pair of socks, a sewing kit for him to take care of his satchel bag and many other things you buy just because they remind you of him — and it goes a long way, every time you give him something in wrapping paper, you see how fulfilled he looks.

He smiles, shaking his head when you buy him the watch he was looking at, stating “it’s unnecessary” but you know how he treasures your gifts, wearing the socks until they have holes in them, reading the book over and over again, keeping parts of you close at all times.

The way you think and feel is different, the way you communicate is different. He tends to be more intellectual and direct and you’re more emotional, your thoughts can be all over the place. But now, you’ve hit this amazing place of understanding and are so much in sync. He’s the one that wipes the tears dry when you’re upset. He is the one who keeps you steady when all you want to do is collapse. He puts a lot of effort not let your relationship tumble down the priority list after spending so long together.

After only a few months together, he invited you over for dinner with his mother, because he wanted you to spend quality time together. Because he believes that you’re going to be around for a long time and that you should start getting to know your future in-law as soon as possible.

When you meet Diana Reid, your first impression of her is that you can see how the little things like her sense of humor or the way she smiles turned Spencer into who he is. It’s kind of amazing to meet the parents of someone you love and then see their qualities reflected in their parents.

You sit through his mother showing you probably every baby picture that had ever been taken of him. See all the awkward school year photos and the university years. His relationship with his mother is a big part of his life, and will go on whether you’re in the picture or not, so you know having you and her meet is something very important to him.

Spencer adores his mom, sends her flowers on Mother’s Day and never forgets her birthday. He does much of the same when it comes to you. You’re dealing with a guy who was raised to love women, and knows how to show it.

The day you meet Diana is also the day you figure out that what you feel for Spencer is not just infatuation, is not just passion, it is full-fledged, warts and all, love. And that this is the man you want beside you for the rest of time.

With his mother's full approval and a few questions regarding when you two would be giving her grandchildren, he decided to take you to meet the team. The only people that he spends more time with than you is his coworkers, and he thinks that you deserve to meet each other, since you’re always hearing so many stories about each other.

With all his attention to detail, you weren't surprised when he asked you to marry him with the most beautiful vintage diamond ring. As you accepted, tears rolling down your cheeks, you couldn't believe how happy you were. You still can't.

You tell Spencer he’ll be a father on the dance floor of your wedding. You’re not sure how you managed to hide it for so long, your dress had to be altered at least four times before the ceremony, but somehow he didn’t notice. You want to tell him but neither of would want to make a scene at your first dance, so you decide to save this little moment just for the two of you. So when he holds you tightly and cries happily into your neck as you dance, everyone else just assume it’s because he’s emotional at finally being married.

You two are so entranced in your own little bubble, telling each other that you’re the happiest you’ve ever been, that you almost don’t notice the camera capturing the moment. You look into the lens with a wide grin and see happy tears rolling down your husband’s face as he holds you by your waist. You’re glad that this moment will be captured forever in a photograph. You’re sure one day you’ll show it to your children.

You spend the rest of the evening like that, dancing next to each other, not wanting to let go.

You always knew he was someone who did everything with conviction and enthusiasm, but he took it to another level as you told him you were pregnant.

It is just as important for dads as it is for moms to be emotionally ready when having a baby. Nine months gives time for dads to read about babies and what to expect, but Spencer takes it, as usually, to another level. He takes parenting classes, reads child psychology books, baby proofs your house, asks his friends for all the tips, organizes your appointments, goes shopping with you to choose items for your baby. Spencer starts keep a journal about how he's feeling and take lots of pictures of you throughout the pregnancy as well. He asks you about all the important things. Are both of you all-in on breastfeeding? Do you want the baby to sleep in a crib in their own room as soon as you get home? Will both of you be working? What are your plans for child care?

While his work schedules could prevent him from attending every appointment, the two of you make sure to create a schedule that allows him to be there as much as possible.

Your pregnancy is a time of many changes, both physically and emotionally. It is a time of learning to embrace your body in a way you never thought would be possible.

One of the immediate challenges of going from two to three in a family is that your child is going to get the majority the attention for the foreseeable future. When people seem to only want to talk about your baby, you notice that Spencer seems content to take a back seat for once. He smiles every time he says "my family"or when people ask him if he has children.

Another challenge is the morning sickness, when a simple smell can make you throw up your morning breakfast, meaning that you can't be useful to yourself, let alone someone else. Spencer always steps up to take care of you without getting grossed out or complaining. You notice that when one of those days he tells you to sit in the tub while he scrubs you and washes you hair, not caring if his clothes get wet.

It is a seemingly ordinary moment. One in the thousands of moments you've shared together, but it's a quiet glimpse into the depths of your husband's character. Depths that reveal themselves to you layer by layer, one shining trait at a time.

You're so thankful Spencer is your co-parent because his excitement and commitment inspire you too. Parenthood has allowed you to see him clearly and fully. And you plan on doing that for the moments still to come, the big and the ordinary. Every day, the man you married gives you more and more reasons to fall deeply in love.

Now, all that's missing from the equation is your child. The one you created together. The one you will raise together. The one that made you both cry together when you heard their heartbeat for the first time. That is an undeniable pull on the heartstrings to love the one you’re with even more than you did before your tiny human comes along. And, whatever happens, you know Spencer will be there by your side.
