Alfred Burke puts on his best policing face as Parisian detective Inspector Maron, in Overseas Press Club - Exclusive!: The Billion Franc Mystery (1.6, ABPC, 1957)
#fave spotting#alfred burke#overseas press club exclusive!#the billion franc mystery#1957#classic tv#public eye#abpc#an obscure series‚ even by the standards of pre 1960s telly. OSPC was a coproduction between Ardleigh Films and Associated British Pathé#(they of the famous news reels‚ and themselves a subsidiary of Associated British Picture Corporation). a year or two later and this#would probably have been made in house by ABC themselves‚ but the franchise was only a year old at this point and still finding its feet#the concept is simple but promising: each week‚ a member of the Overseas Press Club of America (a real and still extant organisation) tells#a tale from their careers‚ an unusual instance or shocking event that makes for good tv. these tales are true! says the narrator in the#show's opening moments‚ and these ppl exist! frankly that's something i take with a large grain of salt; whilst some stories certainly have#direct factual origins (there's an episode about a catholic priest going undercover with a gang of street toughs which ends with footage of#the actual figure that inspired the ep) but others are highly questionable (the first‚ about a Norwegian resistance fighter who has plastic#surgery and takes the place of a relatively high ranking nazi officer; i feel like that's something that would be better known‚ yknow??)#this ep is about a nazi plot to destabilise the French franc just prior to ww2; quite believable and certainly the nazis did dabble in#producing counterfeit money‚ tho the examples i found online all relate to pound sterling or latterly the us dollar‚ not the franc)#our journalist of the week is played by Lee Patterson‚ a minor film star in british b movies at this point‚ with swooningly handsome Anton#Diffring (who had fled nazi persecution himself) as the villain. Alfie's part is pretty small‚ he's just the french cop keeping every one#in sight and letting events play out (cue some wonderful Alfie cheshire cat grins). Patterson (and maybe Diffring) got to fly out to actual#real Paris to film some location work and establishing shots (a benefit of making a series about the OSPC was that they arranged flights#for cast and crew). poor Alf didn't get a holiday tho; his scenes are conspicuously studio based‚ even when he's meant to be on the banks#of the Seine...#so yes‚ a fun little series‚ even if (so far) the wide scope of potential stories does seem to favour ww2 stuff. good luck finding a copy#tho; it took me months of trawling to find a reasonably priced 2nd hand copy (Amazon currently have a copy for £79.99 which.. for 2 discs#is kind of insane). a victim of the price gouging which seems to have affected some of the lesser known network titles since their#dissolution. sad times for the fan of painfully obscure old tv.. if I ever learn how to make things be on a computer‚ tho‚ I'll happily#share

Chapters 172.1 and 172.2
172.1; 172.2.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Weirdly, the apartment where the bounty hunters live is an older, western style townhouse, even though everyone lives in a giant tree and there's no historical/cultural reason for their houses to look like that. For some reason, Ooima chose clearly dated architecture instead of something imagined for a future setting. Even the TV is an older model. Maybe it has something to do with the hunters having less stars? Does the technology go further back in time the lower you go?
Tumblr media
Adey = the knife guy. I still have no clue why he's searching for the doll while everyone else is only looking for the immortals, but I guess that's just part of the mystery.
Tumblr media
This bit freaked me the hell out. For the first time, we see Anton's new body in detail—up until this point, only his silhouette has loomed in the doorway—and it's a distorted ideal of what a human body should be. It's reminiscent of the way Mimori's knocker added muscles to Mimori's arms for greater force. Anton's head—the only part of him that's stayed the same—is cut off because he's so large he can't fit through the door. Only the outline of his features is visible through the glass. It's like he's just a body, if that makes sense? Like, the door separates the part of him that's "him" from the part that's just meat. Creeps me the fuck out.
I thought the bounty hunters were one-off characters but apparently not. I don't really see the point in dragging them along if they're not going to be given depth and/or development (otherwise why do we have to stick with these guys specifically), so fingers crossed we'll get some of that. The power dynamics with Anton alone should be interesting enough to work with.

At last we have an explanation for what the establishing shot of the wish era is supposed to be. Trees. Maybe that was obvious to some people, but it was not to me. And can I just say, this is fucking crazy. I really badly need to know how things ended up like this. I can't imagine Fushi creating huge trees for humanity to live inside unless something went really wrong. Kanitarou didn't touch on it, but there were broken buildings underneath the trees. Also the hole in the middle of each layer where things get passed down lower seems to be where the doll was cast down before it woke up, possibly from Kaibara itself.
Tumblr media
In very abstract terms, the knockers have been trying to bring Paradise to earth. They succeeded, as both Paradise and Kaibara Cybernetics are described as the place where "all of your wishes come true." But Kaibara is more like Christian heaven than Paradise, in that you can get thrown out. The diagram even depicts five and three star humans as winged, and two or lower star humans having their wings taken away, like fallen angels.

Please enjoy this semi-cursed "Valentine" from one-episode wonder Anton Lebrun from Law and Order: Criminal Intent "Lost Children of the Blood," because the idea latched onto my brain and refused to leave:
Tumblr media
(Canon line was "I could make you my next meal," BTW. His first line in the episode and to the character he was speaking to, which bafflingly worked for him.)

i was watching the amazing world of gumball earlier and there was a character named Anton and it made me instantly think of your Anton and i just needed you to know that
REAL. i’ve said this before but tawog is literally where Anton’s name came from. i do this thing where whenever i see a name i like and might use for a character in the future, i write it down in my notes app to save for later and i must’ve done that during my very intense four month long tawog hyperfixation in 2022. so when i was looking for a name for Anton (during the same exact time), i saw that name in my notes app and just thought it suited him! Anton is technically named after a piece of toast from the amazing world of gumball and i think that’s really funny
i actually just rewatched the Anton episode after i got this ask and. GUYS LOOK AT THE FUCKING SYNOPSIS
Tumblr media
“ANTON’S LITTLE TOASTY BODY DISINTEGRATES DURING A SWIM CLASS” I’M SOBBINGGGG THAT’S SO FUCKING FUNNY (in the context where i think of my Anton whenever i hear his name because he is the only thing i’ve been thinking about for the past 8 months straight ANYWAYY)
it’s funny too because that episode is all about CLONES of Anton. there’s just a bunch of Anton clones running around and dying over and over again and that honestly isn’t too far off from how things were like in tllr before Anton got Dew /hj
anyway i am watching tawog again rn look what you’ve done. i will be watching this all night. it’s literally my favorite series in all of existence (lie. tma) Rob and mr small are gonna make me go insane again i’m gonna write another 70k word tawog fanfiction again because of you (/lh /j) anyway i love tawog very much i’m happy my followers have taste

any time i walk in the woods these days i'm liable to have outwardly random bursts of mirth. smiles, giggles, full on chuckling alone in the middle of a forest. i'll move on and a bit later the same will happen again, until eventually i will have to stop and lean on my knees to have a proper laugh. all because of a branch i've seen out of the corner of my eye reminded me of a covert werewolf park ranger and his very reasonably presented concern about eye-level sticks
