Broadway Actors and the Shakespeare Characters I Want To See Them Play
Amber Gray and Patrick Page as Lord and Lady Macbeth
Instead of being a toxic couple who start to get better, I want to see them get worse.
Megan Hilty and Christian Borle as Beatrice and Benedick
The banter would be unmatched
Aura MacDonald as Queen Titania
I don’t have an explanation for this, it’s just correct.
Renee Rapp and Andrea Macasaet as Romeo and Juliet
I do it for the girls and the gays, that’s it.
Patti Lupone as King Lear
I am starting a new club dedicated to casting Patti Lupone in every iconic Shakespeare male lead and I think this is a good place to start.
Joshua Henry as Aaron from Titus Andromedus
I want to hear him say the “villain I have done thy mother” line so bad
Stephanie J Block as the Nurse from Romeo and Juliet.
This one is just vibes
Ali Stroker as Mercutio
It’s been a while since I read Romeo and Juliet but I think I remember enough about it to know that disabled Mercutio would slay
Aaron Tviet as Tybalt

OK, now that the Outlast Trials got a full release, I’m updating my list of “repeated themes in the series” to be my predictions for when Outlast 3 comes out:
Shawn Baichoo returns as the (a?) player character.
More recurring actors (i.e. Marcel Jeannin, Chimwemwe Miller, Andreas Apergis, Carlo Mestroni, Karl Graboshas, Edward Yankie).
This is something I noticed with a lot of the actors, but a huge chunk of them were also in the TV show Real Detective, and Andreas Apergis and Tyrone Benskin were also in the same season of Channel Zero. And Lucinda Davis was in the shitty anime spinoff of Supernatural. This kinda reminds me of the old joke about the BBC having like ten actors, five sets, and three props, except it’s Canada.
Based on the above, my first two guesses for new cast members are Tahmoh Penikett and Marina Stephenson Kerr.
One of the characters does a weirdly sexual licking of the player character’s face.
One of the characters does some gross sexual shit (whether it’s offscreen assault like Knoth and Loutermilch, whatever Val did to Blake during their first meeting on top of the lick, or weird surgeries like Gluskin).
Someone gets crucified.
If we’re returning to the old formula of using a video camera, that gets lost for a while.
Prequel comics.
At least one cult. IDK if it’d worship whatever the Walrider became after the events of the first set of comics, or if it’d be your usual religious cult like in Outlast 2 or what.
At least one fucked up elevator like the dumbwaiter that led to Trager or the one in the lobby of Mount Massive or the one that led to the mines. (Based on two of these, bonus points if the elevator leads to the endgame level.)
The player character gets dropped into a pile of dead bodies (or severed limbs).
The floor has to collapse under the player character.
One of three outcomes for the player character: Final Girl Syndrome like Waylon, Tragic Yet Kinda Ambiguous Death like Miles and maybe the Trials reagents, or Still in Murkoff’s Clutches like Blake.
Shitty weather in an outdoor courtyard fucks with the night vision like the exercise yards at Mount Massive or the school roof in the second game.
Traumatic hand injuries like Miles losing fingers or Blake getting crucified or the apple and Futterman jump scare in the Trials tutorial.
A pitch black area where you have to trudge through water like the one section of sewers in the first game or the part where you have to listen for Jessica before ending up in the school’s pool in the second game.
Hanging bodies in a gym (Gluskin’s victims in the gym in Whistleblower, a fuckton of Jessicas in Outlast 2, and the mannequins (and a couple snitches) in the police station trials).
Having to turn on a generator, turn off something electrical, or turn some big valve on or off. While being chased by enemies on the way. Preferably in a waterlogged area.
Someone’s naked.
Whatever it was JT Petty said in the one anniversary Q&A video on YouTube about including at least one genitalia mutilation in every game (i.e. a number of player character deaths - Marta in the second game and Coyle in Trials come to mind first, plus Gluskin’s whole thing in Whistleblower, plus the chapel bit in the orphanage trial).

Scene I have a few ideas of Super Mario Rebirth Show AU, I figured that I would make My own AU Series of Sonic the Hedgehog with also of few ideas, with redesigns of The Sonic Heroes and Villains.
Bio: Marine was born on Southern Island in the middle of nowhere on the sea, where she was kept company by the Coconut Crew from a young age. Growing up, Marine dreamt of going out and see the world as the captain of her own ship and have adventures, eventually becoming discontent over staying on her island like a prisoner. As such, she would spent her days gazing across the ocean, particular at the Plant Kingdom, while wondering about what lied beyond her home. By the time she was seven years old, Marine finally decided to set out, and took up sailing and shipbuilding, making numerous attempts to make her own ship with Materials.
In Sonic Rush Adventure arc, Marine found Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower when they washed up on Seagull Beach. Claiming to having "saved" them, introductions were made and Marine promptly invited them to stay with her until they found a way home. The next day, Marine took the SS Marine out on its maiden voyage while Sonic and Tails watched, but she failed to control it and crashed. Her loss left Marine devastated, but Tails offered to build her a new boat. While Marine was unsure about it due to several issues, Sonic and Tails made the Wave Cyclone with a book provided by Marine. Proclaiming herself the captain, Marine "lead" the group out on their journey to different islands, looking for Materials. While Marine got to see new places, often wandering off despite Sonic and Tails' warnings, the group was attacked by several robotic enemies on their journey which Marine suspected was jealous of her adventures. They also met the rogue racer Johnny, who Marine goaded into challenging her, only to pass it over to Sonic. When reaching Coral Cave, Marine unveiled the isle by poking at an altar. There, they met Captain Whisker, whom Marine antagonized, and his crew, who were the ones behind the robot attacks. They also met Sonic's old ally, Blaze the Cat, who helped fight off Whisker, though the pirates got away with the Jeweled Scepter, an artifact in Coral Cave which Blaze tried to protect. Hearing that Sonic and Tails were actually from another world, Marine had them explain it all, and they decided to help Blaze recover the scepter which posed a threat to both their worlds.
Years after this event were Marine counties to join her friends an there quest as well as sailing across the seas. She then learned the truth about Sonic use to be a Freedom Fighter in the past and She was thrilled whe he form the new Freedom Fighters as a leader. She still rushed into actions in the seas if she was needed unless she rushed without thinking.

Oscar Picks 2023, Part III: The Big 8
Despite a runaway expected winner for Best Picture, this promises to be an exciting Oscar year for most of the big categories. There are several hot two-horse races and some that are anyone’s game.
But just like in national elections, happenings in one place could be the sign of things to come elsewhere. Look for the Supporting Actress category early in the Ceremony to give us a sense of how things will play out for the night. A win for Jaime Lee Curtis could mean a sweep of the table for EEAAO. If Bassett or Condon wins, it may mean a more tempered night.
Tumblr media
Actor in a Leading Role
Nominees:
Austin Butler, Elvis
Colin Farrell, The Banshees of Inisherin
Brendan Fraser, The Whale
Paul Mescal, Aftersun
Bill Nighy, Living
This is supposed to be Brendan Fraser’s year. But polarizing reviews for The Whale may cost him his trophy. As much as this seems to be a two-man race, any of the other three performances are highly deserving, with all but Mescal winning some piece of major hardware. I still give the edge to Fraser, as he won the SAG award and actors make up the biggest chunk of the Academy.
Who will win: Brendan Fraser
But look out for: Austin Butler
Who I’d vote for: Colin Farrell
If I could add one more: Eden Dambrine (Close). There was no way the Academy was going to recognize a teenage lead in a foreign movie, but few performances by actors of any age are as deeply moving.
Tumblr media
Actress in a Leading Role
Nominees:
Cate Blanchett, Tár
Ana de Armas, Blonde
Andrea Riseborough, To Leslie
Michelle Williams, The Fabelmans
Michelle Yeoh, Everything Everywhere All at Once
Equally exciting as the Best Actor contest, this one appears to be a two-woman race between Blanchett and Yeoh. Even with their impressive résumés, both give career-best performances and have split the awards this season. I presume they’ll be the top two on most ballots. But Blanchett already has two Oscars. I think Academy voters will want to finally reward Yeoh for her exceptional career.
Who will win: Michelle Yeoh
But look out for: Cate Blanchett
Who I’d vote for: Cate Blanchett
If I could add one more: Danielle Deadwyler (Till). Where my Black women at?! Kudos to Riseborough for a strong performance and even stronger campaigning, but it did preclude the Academy from recognizing Deadwyler’s performance and the film as a whole.
Tumblr media
Actor in a Supporting Role
Nominees:
Brendan Gleeson, The Banshees of Inisherin
Brian Tyree Henry, Causeway
Judd Hirsch, The Fabelmans
Barry Keoghan, The Banshees of Inisherin
Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All at Once
This is one of the few sure bets of the evening. Ke Huy Quan has won almost every major award. But Keoghan’s recent victory at the BAFTAs and 3rd place ranking from the National Society of Film Critics may make an impact. Henry and Hirsch are long shots, but I wish Gleeson would have garnered more hardware for his excellent performance.
Who will win: Ke Huy Quan
But look out for: Barry Keoghan
Who I’d vote for: Brendan Gleeson
If I could add one more: Paul Dano (The Fabelmans). After so many exceptional performances in Oscar-nominated Best Pictures, what does Dano have to do to finally get a nod?
Tumblr media
Actress in a Supporting Role
Nominees:
Angela Bassett, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Hong Chau, The Whale
Kerry Condon, The Banshees of Inisherin
Jamie Lee Curtis, Everything Everywhere All at Once
Stephanie Hsu, Everything Everywhere All at Once
Angela Bassett seemed a surefire choice early in awards season, but Jamie Lee Curtis has been on a tear recently. Momentum for EEAAO may just propel her to victory. And while I think Hsu’s performance was actually the more engaging and moving of the film, Academy voters are more likely to pick the veteran favorite. Chau has garnered great praise for her role in The Whale, but she’s the only real long shot here. Condon is coming off a BAFTA win and was the pick of the National Society of Film Critics.
Who will win: Jamie Lee Curtis
But look out for: Angela Bassett
Who I’d vote for: Kerry Condon
If I could add one more: Dolly De Leon (Triangle of Sadness). In her role as toilet manager turned captain, De Leon commands the screen and stimulates the moral and ethical questions the film seeks to ask of its audience.
Tumblr media
Directing
Nominees:
Martin McDonagh, The Banshees of Inisherin
Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All at Once
Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans
Todd Field, Tár
Ruben Östlund, Triangle of Sadness
This award seems written in stone, which is sad considering the incredible depth in the category. Spielberg and Field both offer masterclasses in directing with their entries. McDonagh’s expertise as a playwright shows in his superlative storytelling. Östlund skillfully translates his political and social commentary to pictures. But the Daniels’ creativity, vision, and mastery at so many different styles makes them a shoe-in.
Who will win: Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert
But look out for: Steven Spielberg
Who I’d vote for: Todd Field or Steven Spielberg
If I could add one more: Sarah Polley (Women Talking). Not merely for female representation, Polley deserves to be in this group because her film is one of the most unique, emotional, and engaging stories told on screen this year.
Tumblr media
Original Screenplay
Nominees:
The Banshees of Inisherin
Everything Everywhere All at Once
The Fabelmans
Tár
Triangle of Sadness
This may just be my favorite category of the 2023 Oscars. The five nominees could not be more different from each other, and yet (almost) equally deserving of praise. Banshees took home the Golden Globe, BAFTA, and National Board of Review award. EEAAO won the Writers Guild, Critics’ Choice, and NY Film Critics awards. Tár was the pick of the National Society of Film Critics and LA Film Critics. I think the signs are pointing to EEAAO, though the Academy may offer this as a consolation prize to the excellent Banshees.
Who will win: Everything Everywhere All at Once
But look out for: The Banshees of Inisherin
Who I’d vote for: The Banshees of Inisherin
If I could add one more: Aftersun. Charlotte Wells’ intimate account of a father-daughter relationship manages to say so much without hitting you over the head with anything.
Tumblr media
Adapted Screenplay
Nominees
All Quiet on the Western Front
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Living
Top Gun: Maverick
Women Talking
Sarah Polley’s Women Talking is only up for two awards this year – Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. While the performances and directing deserve praise, its script is its strongest asset. I think the Academy will choose to recognize it with this award. All Quiet on the Western Front may be a spoiler, though, having just won the BAFTA and being the pick of National Board of Review back in early January. With nine nominations, it could be up for a big night. I also wouldn’t rule out Living, which has got a lot of attention recently.
Who will win: Women Talking
But look out for: All Quiet on the Western Front
Who I’d vote for: Women Talking
If I could add one more: Aftersun. Charlotte Wells’ intimate account of a father-daughter relationship manages to say so much without hitting you over the head with anything.
Tumblr media
Best Picture
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front
Avatar: The Way of Water
The Banshees of Inisherin
Elvis
Everything Everywhere All at Once
The Fabelmans
Tár
Top Gun: Maverick
Triangle of Sadness
Women Talking
All signs point to EEAAO. It’s won the top prize at the awards for the Producers Guild, Directors Guild, Writers Guild, and Screen Actors Guild. But ranked choice voting in the Best Picture category can often create pathways you don’t suspect.
Top Gun: Maverick will be a popular choice among American Academy members. It’s likely to occupy that number 2 or 3 spot on a lot of ballots, which could matter if multiple rounds are needed to select a winner. The film was the top pick of the National Board of Review. But without a Best Director nod or any acting nods, the odds aren’t in its favor.
Banshees is also one that’s likely to do well on most ballots, even if it doesn’t occupy the top spot for most people. Sadly, its Best Comedy win at the Golden Globes hasn’t been followed up with any other top prizes.
All Quiet on the Western Front was the surprising BAFTA winner, but I think that has more to do with the subject matter and the importance of the First World War to British audiences. It’s a powerful film, but I think the Academy will reward it with International Feature.
Spielberg’s The Fabelmans had a great early push with a Golden Globe win for Best Drama, but support has fizzled as it’s made way for EEAAO in recent award shows.
Tár has been the favorite of most critics, it seems, topping the list for the National Society of Film Critics, NY Critics, and LA Critics (tied with EEAAO).
With 8 nominations, Elvis may have an outside chance, especially if Butler ends up winning Best Actor.
The other films in this category are all long shots for whom the nomination is the prize.
Who will win: Everything Everywhere All at Once
But look out for: Top Gun: Maverick
Who I’d vote for: Tár
If I could add one more: Close. Belgium’s entry for Best International Feature deserved much more recognition at the Oscars, including a Best Actor and Best Picture nomination.
---
That's it for this year's Oscar picks! Thanks for joining me. Enjoy the show!

How Jessica Chastain Found Calm At Oscars After Will Smith Slap
Amy LamareAugust 2, 2022
The 2022 Academy Awards will go down in history as one of the more bizarre events of the Academy’s 94 years of hosting the annual awards ceremony. The 94th Oscars even top the 2014 ceremony when John Travoltainfamously mangled Idina Menzel’s name. While Chris Rock was presenting the award for best documentary feature, he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair, comparing it to the buzz cut Demi Moore had in the 1997 film G.I. Jane.
RELATED: Will Smith’s New Apology Video and What Chris Rock Teaches Us About NOT Being a Victim
The next thing Rock saw was Will Smith’shand. The actor rushed the stage and slapped Chris Rock in front of their industry peers in the audience and the many millions of people viewing the broadcast. After he was slapped, Rock said, “Will Smith just smacked the s— out of me.” Smith replied vehemently, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f— mouth!” Rock still stunned said, “Wow, dude. It was a G.I. Jane joke.” Smith once again said, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f— mouth.”
This interaction immediately changed the vibe in the room. This was unfortunate for Jessica Chastain who won Best Actress for her performance in The Eyes of Tammy Faye. In her own words, “I walked into a very charged energy in that room, and I was trying to figure out how to just breathe and create a calmness,” she said in an interview with Net-A-Porter.
Jessica Chastain Reclaimed and Reset the Energy in the Room
Needless to say, after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock, the energy on the stage and at the Dolby Theatre was tense.  Jessica Chastain was nominated for Best Actress, the category immediately following the slap. Chastain said the night was a “weird night” overall and she was just trying to remain calm and restore order to the ceremony.
Her acceptance speech touched on discrimination, intolerance, and an exploration of what her purpose as an actress is. She didn’t have a fully prepared speech when she won Best Actress, and after the slapping incident, her emotions threatened to get the best of her. But she knew she had a global audience watching her and she had things she wanted to get across. She said, in part, “We’re faced with discriminatory and bigoted legislation that is sweeping our country, with the only goal of further dividing us.”

Chastain further channeled calmness in talking about Tammy Faye Baker’s “radical acts of love” and how inspired she is by her, saying, “we want to be accepted for who we are, accepted for who we love, and to live a life without the fear of violence or terror.”
Chastain admits she was “genuinely surprised” at her win. Not long after accepting her award, Will Smith won for Best Actor and gave a tearful acceptance speech with no trace of the animosity he displayed toward Rock just minutes earlier.
Other Celebrities Who Turned Oscar Mistakes Into Endearing Moments

Jessica Chastain’s poise and grace in the wake of the slap is inspiring and shows us that we don’t have to be part of the chaos. Take a deep breath to center yourself and move on from the moment with confidence. She isn’t the only person to have a weird moment at the Oscars, albeit she is the only one who had to deal with an issue that had nothing to do with her.
In 2013, Jennifer Lawrence won the Best Actress award for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook. As she stepped onto the stairs leading to the stage she tripped and nearly landed on her face. She recovered quickly and laughed it all off. When she got to the stage, the audience gave her a standing ovation. She said, “You’re only standing up because I fell on the stairs. I feel so embarrassed.”
RELATED: Jennifer Lawrence: Why Does Everybody Hate me?
Years later, she recalled the incident saying,  “They call my name and I’m elated and in shock. You kind of blackout…I can look back at it now that I’m a little bit older fondly…”
In 2014, John Travolta was on stage to present Tony-winner Idina Menzel’s performance of Frozen’s “Let It Go,” one of the Best Original Song nominees. But instead of saying her name, he introduced her as Adele Dazeem, and everyone was confused and worried for him. Two days after the incident, Travolta was making fun of his mistake, saying, I’ve been beating myself up all day. Then I thought … What would Idina Menzel say? She’d say, ‘Let it go, let it go…” For the record, Idina Menzel has no hard feelings over the mix-up.
In 2017, Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty announced the Best Picture winner. They read La La Land as the winner. Only that wasn’t the winning film, Moonlight was. Somehow, the accountants that hold the envelopes with the winning names inside gave the presenters the wrong envelope. While the producers of La La Land were on stage accepting their award, the accountants were rushing on stage to correct the mistake.
What We Can Learn From These Celebs’ Difficult Moments
Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, and John Travolta show us that even if you’re on the biggest stage in the world, mishaps and mistakes can happen. You can choose to fall apart or roll with the punches. Being able to easily assess a situation and adapt to the moment can save you from a lot of stress and angst.
RELATED: Watch 10 of the Most Inspiring Oscars Speeches of All Time
After all, we are all human and we all make mistakes, trip and fall, and occasionally have to present a calm face in a moment of chaos. If Chastain, Lawrence, and Travolta can do this on the Oscar stage in front of millions of people and not just survive but thrive, so can you.
Every single person can benefit from going a little easier on themselves.

Happy Birthday Thomas “Tom” Conti  born November 22nd 1941 in Paisley.
Tom began taking piano lessons at the tender age of four. According to “The London Observer”, by the time he was six he was “threatening to be a genuine prodigy.”
A student at Hamilton Park Catholic School (for boys), he initially trained for a musical career as a classical pianist but switched gears while attending the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Tom auditioned for the drama department and from that day forward he was hooked. Conti’s acting credits began with the Citizen’s Theatre’s 1959 production of “The Roving Boy” at age 18.
After years of success on the stage, Tom’s first film role was as Andrea, in Joseph Losey’s “Galileo”, 1975. He then landed a leading role in the movie “Flame”. Tom played the part of “slick, cynical promoter” for the music group “Slade”. According to the “Guardian”, Tom’s portrayal was “well-nigh perfect”.
It wasn’t stage or film that finally gave Mr. Conti true stardom. It was the 1976 television series The Glittering Prizes, where he played Adam Morris that helped launch his career. He was named Britain’s best T.V. actor in 1976 and soon earned more applause as Norman in the 1978 ITV mini-series The Norman Conquests.
Stage appearances and 3 movies soon followed his success on television. Eclipse, Full Circle aka The Haunting of Julia, with Mia Farrow, and the role of doctor in the film The Duellists. Perhaps the role that Mr. Conti is best known for was created by himself… that of Ken Harrison in Whose Life Is It Anyway?  Ken’s spinal cord is severed in a car accident. Being a former sculptor, Ken begs for the right to decide his own fate, not wanting to spend the rest of his life on life support.
This role was the most challenging of Tom’s career. He could only rely on facial expressions and his voice to portray the struggles and torment of Ken Harrison. After two runs in London to packed houses, Whose Life moved to Broadway where Conti was almost replaced by the Actor’s Equity Council. According to the Union, Tom was not an ‘international star’, and thus should be replaced with an American. His case was represented at a special arbitration meeting where the show’s producer, a film critic and a talent agent stepped up to the plate for Conti. The Conti team won, and opening night raves soon supported the Conti cause. After three months, critics were still amazed with his portrayal of the role. That year Conti received a Tony award for best actor!
Returning to London in 1979, Conti was successful in a handful of directorial debuts, most notably in Beyond Therapy. After a successful run as co-star of They’re Playing Our Song, Tom won an Oscar nomination for best actor of the year for his portrayal of Gowan McgLand in Reuban, Reuban.
I think at home Tom is arguably most famous for playing Costas Dimitriades, the owner of a Greek tavern and the famous lines “Boat is boat, fuck is fuck.” My favourite role of Tom’s however is Col. John Lawrence in the brilliant film Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence.
Conti participated in a genetic-mapping project conducted by the company ScotlandsDNA (now called BritainsDNA). In 2012, Conti and the company announced that Conti shares a genetic marker with Napoléon Bonaparte. Conti has said that he "burst out laughing" when told he was directly related to Napoléon on his father's side.
Never one to stay quiet about his opinions Tom made the papers last year after labelling the Cop26 conference  “a waste of time and money.” going on he also branded  eco-saint Greta Thunberg the ‘high priestess’ of hysteria, saying: 'Greta is a silly girl. Her heart is in the right place, but her head is not.’ Showing how much of a dinosaur he really is he ended with  'There is no climate emergency. The world is not going to come to an end and CO2 is a wonderful gas — without it nothing will grow.’
As old age bites Tom  shows no signs of slowing down, he is set to feature in the credits of the Christopher Nolan film Oppenheimer as Albert Einstein in 2023. He also recently featured in a short-film called Censure this year. Although he admitted he is not “terrifically fit”, the star has out-lived his parents significantly. His father, who reportedly smoked 60 cigarettes a day, died of a heart attack aged 63, while his mother died in her 70s from a brain tumour. Unlike his father, Conti has few bad habits and has been open about his efforts to cut down on sugar. He also admitted he’s on a diet of magnesium, anti-inflammatories, and statins to manage his health.
He says he also still moves around a lot, despite having “never been terrifically fit”.

My Peak TV Journey *Only Murders in the Building*
I had a hard time getting started writing about the third season of Only Murders in the Building. I liked it. I definitely intend to watch the upcoming fourth season. I love the show’s love of theater and in someways that made it a better season than the previous two which focused on podcasting and co-op politics. It’s also greatcoat they found a way for Tina Fey’s character Cinda Canning to cause tension about the future without any flash forwards the way the first season did. Keep the regular jumping around in time to flashbacks while new information is revealed is for the best.
The second season ended with flash forward to a supposed murder of a character never seen before in the midst of the opening performance of a Broadway play. The play is directed by lead character Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), who had been unemployed for years, and it co-stars another lead character Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), who it turns out, does not to get along with costar, a movie star trying out the stage named Ben Glenroy, played by Paul Rudd. They go on stage to begin the play, only for Ben to fall down, presumably dead, with blood coming out of his mouth.
For the time between the second season finale and the third season premiere seemed that for once, Oliver, Charles and Mabel (Selena Gomez) would be investigating a murder in a different building. The third season premiere did something of a double fake out. First they reveal that Ben survived his mysterious collapse. For a few minutes we wonder if this season will be investigating an attempted murder. There are other tensions going on including how Charles is already pretty miserable in the production, Mabel wants to get back to podcasting but does not have as subject, and Oliver is romantically interested in Loretta, one of the other cast members played by Meryl Streep. While the characters wonder about how Ben’s near death almost put them on different paths, there is the second fake out, where Ben’s actual dead body is discovered in a scene reminiscent of Claude Chabrol’s Le Boucher, though more violent and less disturbing than in that film.
The show’s creators said that Mabel would have the most changed storyline, but I didn’t really see it. She had similar plot points to previous seasons, complete with new love interest with an ambiguous connection to the case. She’s still worried about being directionless, and this is heightened by the fact that she must leave the apartment she’s been living in. It was owned by her aunt, she was staying in it to renovate it, and now it’s sold. Mabel doesn’t even have any of the paperwork needed to be approved for a lease, which is kind of relatable. The most surprising aspect of Mabel’s plot was that she got the role of the stand in for people who actually liked Ben Glenroy, his fans. It kind of puts her at odds with Oliver and Charles, leading them to an even later start than usual at making the podcast from which the tv series takes its. (This also meant that the podcasts fans are not part of this season. While I like the actors who play they fans, I didn’t miss the characters.)
More than the second season, the third one seems haunted by Charles’s season one love interest Jan also being the season’s killer. Both Charles’s romance with Joy (Andrea Martin) and Oliver’s with Loretta have shadows over them because of that, leading to some understandable self sabotage. How can any of them trust their romantic instincts after what seemed like a good thing between Charles and Jan? I also really wish we got to see Charles and Joy together more, because I really like Andrea Martin, and I think I like her character here better than the one on Evil. Oliver and Loretta are pretty appealing, making one forget what an odd pairing Martin Short and Meryl Streep would be anywhere else.
Generally speaking, there were fewer appearances from the reoccurring characters in the building this season. Last season’s sub plot about the new co-op board president’s plans for the building didn’t come up at all, and I wanted an update. However, this season finally an episode from Uma’s point of view. As someone who always enjoys seeing the great Jackie Hoffman I appreciated it, especially the reveal of her kleptomania,  Also enjoyed her in the audience for the opening night of Death Rattle Dazzle, the now musical version of Oliver’s directorial efforts.
Everything about Death Rattle, a supposedly old fashioned, but obtuse murder mystery becoming the musical was absurd Death Rattle Dazzle. No one with any experience in theater would believe it. But that’s part of what makes it a comedy. Anyway, they didn’t want strong parallels between the play and the series, in a way that a less non-sensical play might invite. I haven’t been a theater person as an adult, so I am not sure if the series created the concept of the White Room, or it is a real thing amongst theater people. I loved the White Room, and not just for the chance to see Steve Martin make ridiculous, blissed out faces. I liked it for the sense of the one’s mental safe space is also what prevents one from growing. After the season aired I found articles in both Vulture and The Ringer about how the show is kind of nightmarish under the humor. Neither article mentioned the White Room, but I think the feel its existence, and how it scares people who see someone else in it, is an encapsulation of the uneasy tone that the writers of these articles are discussing.

Tyrant in a Housecoat
Review of Julius Caesar – Passion Play Theater, Oberammergau
Can democracy be saved through regicide? It's been over 400 years since William Shakespeare posed this question. Christian Stückl applies it to current world events and transforms the old drama into a contemporary political thriller: complete with deafening gunshots, a hardcore SWAT team, and a cast of 250.
Tumblr media
"Julius Caesar" directed by Christian Stueckl at the Passion Play Theater Oberammergau
July 2, 2023. (#01077) Towards the end, it's going to get quite loud, warns director Christian Stückl in a pre-show announcement. What was once a dialogue-heavy play about a conspiracy against the dictator Julius Caesar turns into an action-packed spectacle with plenty of pyrotechnics. Special effects are one of the means through which Stückl infuses life into the story of political strategies and intrigues.
Another means is modernization. Props and costumes are set in contemporary times. Politicians wear suits, while Caesar's fans don T-shirts and baseball caps with their idol's logo (Set and Costume Design: Stefan Hageneier). Shakespeare's story raises the question of when the assassination of a tyrant is justified and whether it can save democracy. "Julius Caesar" resonates with current world events. In an interview with the Munich «Abendzeitung», Stückl specifically mentions Trump, Putin, or Erdogan. Onstage, he remains abstract. Although the absurdly long table and the uniforms of the palace guards bear a striking resemblance to Kremlin productions.
Red Table, Red Tie
The vibrant red on stage—walls, pillars, chair legs, and rotary-dial telephone on the red table—is associated with Caesar. The military leader, who accumulates more and more political power, dons a red tie and a red housecoat. His supporters wear red, as does his wife Calpurnia (Barbara Schuster). She and Brutus's wife, Portia (Eva Norz), are the only two female speaking roles. They each have one scene in which they plead in vain to be involved in their husbands' decisions.
Caesar is the titular character but by no means the main focus of the play. He's already dead before the intermission. We learn about his achievements and misdeeds through the reports of other characters. First-hand, we experience him only as a stereotype. Andreas Richter, a veteran in leading roles in Oberammergau, including in the Passion Play, portrays Caesar as a smooth charismatic figure who has mastered the techniques and gestures of a populist. His adversaries, Cassius (Yannick Schaap) and Brutus (Martin Schuster), plan and justify the attack on Caesar in lengthy dialogues. Cassius is the man of action, a power-conscious networker in a white hoodie and leather jacket; Brutus is the thinker in a jacket over a black turtleneck. As an idealist without personal ambitions, he serves as the perfect face of the conspiracy.
Thrilling Suspense
The Oberammergau version blurs the two characters. The tragedy of Brutus, who stands alone as a selfless democrat, is lost. Partly due to the text cuts, but also because Brutus and Cassius dilate and blur in the crowd scenes. Even when the conspirators are alone, there are still ten actors on stage; when Brutus and Cassius address the Roman people, there are more than fifty performers.
With the orchestra and choir in the pit, the production boasts a total of 250 participants. Markus Zwink's music initially builds suspense with drum rolls, cymbals, and strings, later unleashing the violence of civil war with full orchestration and choir. At some points, the music and acting are poorly synchronized: actors declaim over the choir or they appear, only to wait idly for the music to finish.
Cengiz Görür, playing Antony, is someone who confidently asserts himself on stage. He vividly portrays the third party, who incites the fickle masses against Brutus with cunning rhetoric. He doesn't overly emphasize the irony in Antony's funeral oration for Caesar. With his strategically placed intense emotions, Görür turns his Antony into a convincing manipulator of the masses.
Gradually, the red disappears from the stage with Caesar. This happens subtly. As the evening progresses, daylight fades from the mix. The stage lighting becomes colder. Faces appear greenish, and the stage loses its most conspicuous attribute without any changes. Caesar's influence has faded. But what follows in his wake?
Bang Boom Bang
Chaos. Antony confronts Cassius and Brutus in the field. The power struggle for Rome becomes confusing. The characters are all armed to the teeth with pistols, rifles, and hand grenades. Antony's soldiers look like a modern SWAT team. Christian Stückl hasn't promised too much: there are gunshots, explosions, deafening noise, and the smell of smoke. In the final scene, during a requiem, the people mourn and carry framed portraits of the slain statesmen in front of them. Fires still flicker on the ground as we leave the theater.
Symbolically, but also quite explicitly, "Julius Caesar" in Oberammergau shows that the removal of a despot doesn't automatically lead to freedom and stability, but rather chaos and more violence. Text and plot aren't always easy to grasp in Stückl's production. However, the brisk pace and the young ensemble create a powerful theatrical evening that makes us ponder and sometimes shudder.
Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare Directed by: Christian Stückl, Set and Costume Design: Stefan Hageneier, Music: Markus Zwink. With: Andreas Richter, Barbara Schuster, Martin Schuster, Eva Norz, Yannick Schaap, Cengiz Görür, David Bender, Ferdinand Dörfler, Florian Maderspacher, Maximilian Bender, Sidney Schwind, Nanno Hensold, Peter Mangold, Frederik Mayet, Walter Rutz, Benedikt Fischer, Emil Twitchell. Premiere on July 1, 2023 Duration: 2 hours 10 minutes, one intermission passionstheater.de
Review Roundup
Christian Stückl's decision to bring "Caesar" into the present day and incorporate current political references is "visually pleasant after the very long Passion Play summer of 2022 filled with sandals and flowing robes," writes Christiane Lutz in the Süddeutsche Zeitung (July 2, 2023). The much-debated question of whether regicide can save democracy is resolved quickly, "because it becomes clear that there can be no winners if there are no ideas for the 'afterward'," argues the critic. In fact, this "frustration" is the strength of this "surprisingly focused production"; it's not easy to define the "right side."
In Oberammergau, "there is an audience far from discourses in the capital city bubbles that must be convinced that it's worth it — the theater trip to Oberammergau," according to Hannes Hintermeier in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (July 17, 2023). The "references to current figures of contemporary history" are "overly obvious: the excessively long red table that brings to mind Putin's distancing furniture, the dictator's guard wears imaginative uniforms, somewhere between Italian fascism and French cops." That director Christian Stückl chose this "demanding" play is nevertheless a courageous decision.

ABOUT MY FATHER (2023)
Starring Sebastian Maniscalco, Robert De Niro, Leslie Bibb, Anders Holm, David Rasche, Kim Cattrall, Brett Dier, Deborah Tucker, Jessie Camacho, Laura Ault, André Wilkerson, Andrea Garnett, Adan James Carrillo            , Katie Walker, Carla Christina Contreras, Griffin Hood, Bruce Cooper       , Arielle Prepetit, Marisa Cornett, Ana Navarro and Chris Hayes.
Screenplay by Austen Earl and Sebastian Maniscalco.
Directed by Laura Terruso.
Distributed by Lionsgate Films. 121 minutes. Not Rated.
In what must be a record, Robert De Niro – who was once considered the greatest actor in films during the ‘70s, ‘80s and even a bit of the ‘90s – has now essentially been playing the same broad character (caricature?) in most of the multitudes of movies that he’s done for about the last three decades.
Even though we haven’t really met Salvo – the Father in this film’s title – we’ve seen these moves from De Niro many times. It was the same in the questionable likes of Meet the Parents, Bad Grandpa, Everybody’s Fine, Last Vegas, Meet the Fockers, The War With Grandpa, Amsterdam, Little Fockers and even Silver Linings Playbook. You know the type; grumpy, scowling, impatient, judgmental, apparently humorless, slightly goofy, eventually ending up having a heart of gold.
Actually, we have met the character of Salvo, sort of, in the stand-up comedy of Sebastian Maniscalco. About My Father is the comedian’s coming out party on film – he is the star and co-writer – and it is somewhat loosely based upon his comic routines. (Maniscalco had previously done a bit of acting on the side, taking on supporting roles in Green Book and The Irishman.)
This is obviously a deeply personal story to Maniscalco – his character has his own given name and his father’s name is also the real deal. The character based on his wife, on the other hand, has been changed to the extremely WASPy name Ellie Collins, from the more ethnic real-life moniker Lana Gomez. However, actress Leslie Bibb does look quite a bit like his real wife.
About My Father has some very funny parts, but I’m not sure that this film is the announcement of a new, exciting comic voice on the movie scene. Particularly because I’m not quite sure that Maniscalco the screenwriter did many favors to Maniscalco the leading man.
Strangely, to a certain extent Maniscalco has made himself the straight man in his own film, playing it rather sane and close to the vest while surrounded (and slightly dwarfed) by the eccentric talents of De Niro, Bibb, David Rasche and Kim Cattrall. Which, I suppose, is somewhat generous, giving the flashiest moments (for better or worse) to your co-stars.
Sadly, it leaves the star with not all that much to do. The fictional “Sebastian Maniscalco” is sentimental, loving, a tiny bit naïve and not nearly cynical enough to really make an impression. Therefore, it’s up to the audience to decide whether or not they really care about his first-world conflict, and honestly, I’m not sure many people will.
In theory, I guess, About My Father is about class struggles. Sebastian is the son of a Chicago hairdresser who is smart and beloved in his community. Sebastian himself has grown to be a successful manager in one of Chicago’s most exclusive hotels. Irony alert: he’s in love with the daughter of a billionaire competing hotel magnate and his US senator wife (played by David Rasche and Kim Cattrall).
When his girlfriend Ellie (Leslie Bibb) wants Sebastian to spend the Fourth of July weekend at her parents’ massive compound, Sebastian feels guilty about leaving dad for the holiday. Therefore Ellie suggests that Salvo come stay as well.
The problem is, the rich people, while certainly spoiled, eccentric and more than willing to exploit their riches, turn out to be basically good, caring people. They may sometimes do the wrong things, but they mostly do them for the right reasons.
And honestly, Sebastian’s dad can be kind of a judgmental dick.
This leads to a whole series of fish out of water gags in which Sebastian tries desperately to play peacemaker between the two worlds. Some of those gags work, but just as often they go spectacularly awry. For example, there is one extended joke about a peacock which is far, far, over the line of taste. No. Just no.
I’m not sure that is the class struggle statement that Maniscalco meant to impart, but honestly by the end of the film, the viewer feels more empathy for the out-of-touch rich folk than the down-to-earth “normal guy.”
We’re never totally sure why Sebastian is willing to be so overprotective about his father, but then again, he feels like an awkward fit with Ellie, too. Bibb, who is always a likable presence on film, seems to be bouncing off the walls in this film. I can only assume that was how she was directed to play the role, but it makes her character oddly cartoonish, just like dad.
Maybe the real revelation of About My Father is that Sebastian Maniscalco has strange tastes in who he decides to love.

Noir Watch: Dial 1119 (1950)
Tumblr media
Watched:  05/24/2023
Format:  TCM
Viewing:  First
Director:  Gerald Mayer
I went into this film with low expectations and finished it absolutely knocked over by the script, direction and actors - not to mention the camera work, attention to costume, etc...  It's a dynamite package of a movie, and one I'd recommend for folks thinking of character detail done economically.
The movie takes place in near real-time as an escaped psychiatric patient steals a gun on a charter bus and then winds up taking a bar and its patrons hostage while things escalate outside.  It's part of the noir subgenre of hostage-dramas that probably started before The Petrified Forest, but found footing there and worked it's way into a thousand scenarios (check our Key Largo if you haven't prior).
The cast is mostly folks who were not mainstream stars in 1950, though some became household names.  In it's way, it's an ensemble picture, and feels influenced by theater of the first half of the 20th century, not least of which is the Pulitzer prize winning Time of Your Life.  Only interrupted by a psychotic gunman.
But the pieces are there.  We catch snippets of who each character is just enough so we wonder how they'll react to a gunman sure to kill them.  The young man waiting on word that his wife delivered their baby.  The lush in search of a man for the night.  The reporter who just quit.  The cranky bartender who doesn't think much of humanity.  The aging virgin and the man who is throwing sweet nothings at her, surely with motives both in the bedroom and out, but nothing to do with her.  Then there's the psychologist who wants to save the world and the cop looking to minimize the disaster.  And, of course, the menace of television (this being 1950).
William Conrad plays the bartender, Signal Watch favorite Sam Levene the psychologist, Leon Ames the Letch, and Barbara Billingsley's distinct voice and face will knock you out of your seat when she shows up in a bit part as an office admin for a newspaper editor.
Also expect character actor Argentina Brunetti and Dick Simmons as a roving TV reporter.
In true Hollywood fashion, the two leading women are both too attractive for what I think they're supposed to be, but both sell their roles like crazy.  Andrea King as the late-20's virgin trying to pass for 23 nails her part, and Virginia Field's lush is the movie's primary secret weapon.  Matched closely by the powder-keg-waiting-to-blow Marshall Thompson as the gunman.
SPOILERS
Bumping off Conrad as the turn to the second act was wild stuff and removed any sense of certainty to the film.  But Virginia Field's lush stole the show for me, maybe as crazy and erratic as the gunman in her own way, and more violently ready to live.  Her moment taking down the gunman was unexpected and perfect.  And, of course, Thompson's shocked and childish reaction to being gunned down - just the perfect character note to wrap his arc.
This movie would have made a great stage play, but then you'd miss out on the street scenes, the chaos below, the @#$%-up at the paper that almost gets them killed...  So, yeah, this works for me as a movie.  It would probably now be a mid-season TV cliffhanger somewhere, but I like that it's so self-contained and has only the info we need to care about the hostages and turns the knife for the returning GI's and what they went through at abroad and at home - and some should never have been given a gun.
Anyway, a great, tight film that I'll certainly re-watch.

Actress: The Race to Watch
Tumblr media
The nominees are:
Annette Bening — Nyad
Lily Gladstone — Killers of the Flower Moon
Sandra Hüller — Anatomy of a Fall
Carey Mulligan — Maestro
Emma Stone — Poor Things
This year’s best Actress race is the most hotly contested major award. It’s extremely exciting that the lead acting categories have turned out to be such exciting races in the last few years.
This year mirrors so much of what happened last year. The lead contenders split the Golden Globes, with one winning at BAFTA and Critics’ Choice (Stone), the other at SAG (Gladstone). One is a frequent nominee who’s already won an Oscar (Stone), the other a first-time nominee whose win would represent an historic moment for an underrepresented community (Gladstone).
But last year, Michelle Yeoh was the lead actress with more than 95 minutes of screen time (68% of the movie) in the most awarded film of the year. Lily Gladstone’s in 56 minutes (27%) of a movie that hasn’t picked up anything this season other than her awards.
She’s still the frontrunner, but only by a very slim margin as far as I’m concerned. I’m probably at 50.1 for Gladstone, 49.9 for Stone.
While the Academy loves to pat itself on the back for breaking barriers and honoring performers of color, it often falls short, as its largely white voting base often defaults to established white actresses. Think Meryl Streep and Frances McDormand both beating Viola Davis when she was favored to become only the second Black person to win Best Actress. Think Andrea Riseborough’s nomination over Danielle Deadwyler for last year’s Till.
There’s perhaps an outside chance that Gladstone and Stone could split votes, leaving a pathway for my personal choice — Sandra Hüller, who, despite being selected by the National Society of Film Critics over both Gladstone and Stone, hasn’t collected any other major hardware.
And while I admired the performances of Bening and Mulligan, they’re likely to extend their Oscar losing streaks to five and three, respectively.
Who will win: Lily Gladstone — Killers of the Flower Moon
But look out for: Emma Stone — Poor Things
Who I’d vote for: Sandra Hüller — Anatomy of a Fall
If I could add one more: Greta Lee — Past Lives
