Writing Accessibility PSA

Please avoid using long strings of characters as line breaks in your writing - these are not screen reader/TTS friendly!

Every ‘°’ will be read as ‘degree’ - can you imagine how long it takes to read out a string of 25? Let alone more complicated combinations of characters (eg. imagine listening to TTS read out ~*~ |°| ~*~ multiple times per line break)?

A good rule of thumb is to stick with short, 2-3 character line breaks (eg. I don’t find — or *** too egregious to listen to). Your readers can tell there’s been a scene change whether you use two or twenty em-dashes, but if you use twenty, some of us might have to listen for 30 seconds to read the next scene. If you’re more concerned about aesthetics, you can insert an image of your aesthetically pleasing line break with alt text simply reading ‘line break’ for accessibility.

Don’t feel bad if this is something you’ve never thought about before - now you know better and can make your writing more accessible moving forward!

I would like to invite any other screenreader users to add their own thoughts or preferences to this post. We’re not a monolith and there’s a variety to how different softwares interact with repeating character strings and images with alt text, so there’s bound to be some conflicting opinions on what I’ve suggested above. Let’s try to make the stories we share accessible for everyone :]

Left. Right. Left. Right. The pendant swung from one side to the other, and Whumpee couldn't take their eyes off it.

"Isn't it so nice?" Whumper cooed, and Whumpee couldn't even muster the strength to nod.

Left. Right. Left. Right. It was so easy to lose themself to it. So pleasant. So comfortable.

Suddenly, they snapped out of it, and for a moment they could see the leather straps binding them to the chair, and the wicked smile of their abductor. They almost screamed for help, but...

Left. Right. Left. Right. The pendant drew them back in, and they sagged against their restraints once more.

"There you go," Whumper murmured. "Just give yourself up entirely."

Wiping a tear away with the tip of a knife

"You look good."

"I got away. No thanks to you."

SENSORY WHUMP!!!

- Loud, unpredictable noises to keep whumpee awake and alert

- Strong smells. It doesn’t matter if it’s something that would typically be considered a nice smell. Under the right circumstances or amount of time, anything from the smell of a warm meal to a fancy perfume can invoke nausea.

- A nice bit of pavlov! Associating certain things, such as sounds or sensations, with certain behaviors.

- Just the feeling of a weapon pressed against skin. Not breaking it, not even causing any physical pain, just keeping someone in suspense.

- Sensory-enhancing drugs

- Keeping a whumpee bundled up even in hot weather. Yeah it’s 80 degrees but if you take off that winter coat you’re not getting anything when it hits 20.

- Beating up a blindfolded whumpee. They have no idea where they’re going to be hit next or when.

- Forcing a whumpee to touch an exposed innard or gut. Come face to face with your own mortality AND weird uncomfortable feeling.

- Headphones constantly blasting loud noises. (for work i sometimes have to take orders with headphones and god it is so so painful whenever someone just yells directly into my ears. i am projecting.)

Put your Tiny Whumpee in a glue trap.

i was watching the amazing world of gumball earlier and there was a character named Anton and it made me instantly think of your Anton and i just needed you to know that

REAL. i’ve said this before but tawog is literally where Anton’s name came from. i do this thing where whenever i see a name i like and might use for a character in the future, i write it down in my notes app to save for later and i must’ve done that during my very intense four month long tawog hyperfixation in 2022. so when i was looking for a name for Anton (during the same exact time), i saw that name in my notes app and just thought it suited him! Anton is technically named after a piece of toast from the amazing world of gumball and i think that’s really funny

i actually just rewatched the Anton episode after i got this ask and. GUYS LOOK AT THE FUCKING SYNOPSIS

“ANTON’S LITTLE TOASTY BODY DISINTEGRATES DURING A SWIM CLASS” I’M SOBBINGGGG THAT’S SO FUCKING FUNNY (in the context where i think of my Anton whenever i hear his name because he is the only thing i’ve been thinking about for the past 8 months straight ANYWAYY)

it’s funny too because that episode is all about CLONES of Anton. there’s just a bunch of Anton clones running around and dying over and over again and that honestly isn’t too far off from how things were like in tllr before Anton got Dew /hj
