Hiver 1916-1917 - Champs-les-Sims

Je suis bien loin d'être une spécialiste aussi informée que Constantin, mais il me semble que les autres bustes que nous possédons sont également de la XXème dynastie. Personnellement j'ai un attrait plus particulier pour l'art de la XVIIIème et XIXème, mais je trouve cela fascinant de voir que nous avons dans notre collection des reliques datant d'une lignée de princes de sang, qui se sont autrefois passés le pouvoir de mains en mains. Bien que l'on puisse reprocher aux pharaons de la XXème l'affaiblissement progressif de l'Egypte, il y a quelque chose d'émouvant dans tous ces portraits qui reprennent le nom et la forme d'un ancêtre prestigieux. Cela me rappelle ma petite Eugénie. Le jour où Madame Eugénie nous quittera, elle sera là pour se souvenir d'elle.

Nous possédons aussi une très belle collection de vases canopes que nous exposons dans le bureau, de même que mes photographies. J'espère pouvoir un jour vous les montrer et je sais que Constantin en serait également extrêmement fier.

Eugénie « Tu es bien gentil d’accompagner ta vieille grand-maman à sa promenade mon garçon. Et quelle élégance, tu me rappelles ton grand-père au même âge ! »

Marc-Antoine « Votre mari, André ? »

Eugénie « Oh grand Dieu non ! Tu n’as rien pris de lui le ciel soit loué ! Non, je parlais de Maximilien. Et tu lui ressembles presque trait pour trait. Chez lui, l’élégance n’était pas qu’une question d’allure mais aussi de physionomie. Et tu as la même prestance. »

Marc-Antoine « Merci Grand-Mère, c’est gentil. Allons nous monter jusqu’à l’étang ? »

Eugénie « Non, le froid fait mal à mes vieilles articulations. Nous allons rester dans le domaine pour aujourd’hui si tu le veux bien. Cela te ferait plaisir que nous montions à l’étang un jour ? »

Marc-Antoine « Oui beaucoup ! Il y a une très belle vue sur le village de là-haut. »

Eugénie « Alors dès que le temps le permettra nous irons. Aujourd’hui, j’ai envie de venir ici. Tu sais ce qu’est cet endroit ? »

Marc-Antoine « Oui, enfin un peu. Les filles n’aiment pas venir jouer ici car elles trouvent que c’est un peu glauque. Et vous dites que des fois, les fantômes des morts sortent. C’est terrifiant je trouve. »

Eugénie « Oh ils ne peuvent pas nous faire de mal. Pas plus qu’il n’en ont fait de leur vivant pour certains, en tous cas. »

Eugénie « Je voulais venir ici avec toi, spécifiquement toi. Tu sais qui repose ici j’imagine ? »

Marc-Antoine « Oui, nos ancêtres. »

Eugénie « Exactement. Tous les Le Bris qui sont nés qui sont nés sur cette terre de la Butte aux Chênes, depuis plus de cent ans. A quelques exceptions bien sur. Il y a ton grand-père, Maximilien, dont tu tiens tellement. Il y a son frère, Matthieu, et deux de ses sœurs, Lazarine et Daphné. Mes enfants enterrés bien trop tôt. Il y a aussi feu mon mari, qui malgré ses actions détestables a eu à coeur le bien être de notre famille. Il y a aussi ses parents, Jean-Pierre et Marianne, tes arrière-arrière grand-parents, ceux qui ont rebâti sur les cendres du domaine familial. »

Marc-Antoine « Et un jour... »

Eugénie « Oui, un jour il y aura tes parents, ton oncle Adelphe, puis toi, tes enfants, et les enfants de tes enfants. Et bien sur, d��ici quelques temps, vous m’y enterrerez également. »

Marc-Antoine « Vous ne mourrez jamais Grand-Mère. Oncle Adelphe dit que vous êtes une force de la nature inébranlable et bien trop têtue pour céder aux caprices du destin. »

Eugénie « C’est adorable. Mais vois-tu, j’ai déjà enterré trop d’enfants et de petits-enfants. Je suis trop usée, mon petit. Comme beaucoup de gens de mon âge, j’aspire au repos après tant d’années de bons et loyaux services. Chaque personne enterrée ici a fait son devoir au service de cette famille. »

Marc-Antoine « Quel devoir ? J’ai des devoirs envers qui ? »

Eugénie « La famille, mon petit. Nous sommes chacun ici un individu, une pièce d’un immense ensemble que nous appelons la famille Le Bris, et durant notre vie, nous ajoutons notre pierre à l’édifice. De tous ceux qui reposent ici, je crois que c’est ton grand-père Maximilien qui le comprenait le mieux. »

Accidentally Getting Caught

After his eventful "date" with Angelo, Luis attempted to sneak back home quietly, but his parents were waiting for him outside. His mother, furious with him sneaking out, yelled at him for doing so and she became even angrier when she had smelled weed on him. As his father looked at him disappointed, she yelled at Luis to go to his room. What Luis didn't think of, was how guilty he would feel about disappointing his parents like this.

After the death of her child Magdalena became despondent. She barely left her room and would often cry herself to sleep. Francisco was worried for his wife, but he let her be, hoping she would come out of it naturally. However, it became clear that this was not happening anytime soon.

Francisco too grieved his lost son, but he couldn't afford to crumble as they still had another son to care for. Little Andrés didn't understand why his mom was always so sad and would often cry out for his mamá. Andrea, Sebastián, and Ángela helped care for him and Francisco was grateful for them.

Bonus pictures of Consuelo with Helen and Andrés that I managed to capture just before Andrés' death. I like to think that despite grieving his son's death in combat, Andrés was able to live somewhat peaceful final months, since retired from crime and living with his platonic soulmate and her girlfriend, and that he found comfort in that.

A dire vrai, la bonne humeur de Grand-Mère est antérieure à notre retour. Alors que nous étions en Egypte, elle s'est un jour agacé de s'ennuyer à l'hôtel. Elle s'est alors rendue dans un souk non loin de là où vont parfois s'encanailler les voyageurs européens en mal de fantaisies orientales. Elle y a payé une consultation chez une voyante, même si je ne sais dans quel but. Sans doute cela a-t-il à voir avec l'avenir matrimoniale de Cousine Blandine ou des enfants de votre soeur Jeanne.

Transcription :

Rhabba : Bien le bonjour bonne Madame, qu'est-ce que Rhabba peut faire pour vous ?

Eugénie : Vous parlez bien le français pour une égyptienne.

Rhabba : Mon père est algérien, je le parle depuis ma plus tendre enfance.

Eugénie : Fort bien. Je m'adresse donc à la bonne personne.

Rhabba : Il n'y a pas mieux que Rhabba dans toute la ville du Caire Madame. Que désirez vous ? Je lis les cartes de tarot et dans les boules de cristal. Je pratique également l'oniromancie et l'astrologie. Sous peu, votre avenir n'aura plus de secrets pour vous.

Eugénie : Je suis une vieille femme, mon avenir ne m'intéresse pas.

Rhabba : Celui de vos proches alors. Ne désirez-vous pas savoir si vos petites-filles feront de bons mariages ?

Eugénie : Vous pourriez me dire cela ?

Rhabba : Bien entendu. Je pourrai même vous révéler combien d'enfants elles auront et combien d'entre eux seront des fils.

Eugénie : Et bien, tout cela est très tentant, mais je ne suis pas venue pour cela.

Rhabba : Intéressant. La plupart de mes clients veulent connaître leur avenir.

Eugénie : Je ne suis pas n'importe quelle cliente. Je vous paierai bien si vous pouvez entrer en contact avec les morts. Il y a une chose dont je veux avoir le coeur net.

Rhabba : Bien sûr Madame. Rhabba peut invoquer l'esprit des morts, et cela dans le moindre danger. A qui voulez-vous parler ? Votre père ? Votre mère peut-être ?

Eugénie : Mon mari en réalité. Il nous a quitté il y a fort longtemps.

Rhabba : Bien évidemment. Il vous faudra juste répondre à quelques questions si voulez que je vous convoque votre époux.

Eugénie : Fort bien. Je vous écoute.

Rhabba : Votre mari était-il un homme ambitieux ?

Eugénie : Pour sûr, il ne souhaitait rien tant que devenir un homme riche et important.

Rhabba : Vous avez fait un mariage d'amour n'est-ce pas ?

Eugénie : Oh ! Comment le savez vous?

Rhabba : Etait-il un homme aux traits avenants et aux cheveux clairs ?

Eugénie : Exact ! Vous êtes douée Madame !

Rhabba : A-t-il connu une fin tragique ?

Eugénie : D'une certaine façon c'est le cas.

Rhabba : Je crois que j'ai ce qu'il me faut. Pour invoquer l'esprit de votre mari, je pense qu'il est judicieux de commencer par la boule de cristal. Elle fournit une résonnance idéale pour les brumes spirituelles produites par les manes des défunts. De plus, chacun sait que le verre est un matériau sacré, à même de convoquer les âmes du Paradis.

Eugénie : Et celles de l'Enfer ?

Rhabba : Bien entendu. Il me faut à présent commencer mes incantations.

Household Bio:

Life for Andrés and Natalia, who had been high school sweethearts, changed abruptly when Natalia found out she was pregnant. In order to support his family, Andrés made the decision to join the military. Natalia had also made the decision to attend college in the hopes of obtaining a nursing degree. Their little family were doing great and 5 years later they welcomed their second child Luis. Now Andrés has retired from the military and he supports his family through his handyman business, and Natalia is employed as a home health care nurse. Janelly now lives close by to her parents in her own home with her boyfriend Michael, their two dogs, Rex and Angel. Luis, who is still unclear of his career path, continues to live with his parents, but Andrés is beginning to grow impatient because Luis doesn't appear to be looking for work either

When you get publicly slapped by 4 surrealist poets because you insulted a guy's historical crush

Gallantly Defending Robespierre’s Honour

In the conservative daily paper, Le Gaulois, on March 3, 1923, the journalist and man of letters, Wieland Mayr, expressed his pleasure: there would not be, he wrote, a "vile apotheosis" for "that holy scoundrel" Robespierre. On the other hand, Mathiez had the Surrealists with him. Following the article in Le Gaulois, Robert Desnos (1), accompanied by Paul Éluard (2), Max Ernst (3), and André Breton (4), summoned Mayr in a café and publicly slapped him for insulting the memory of "the Incorruptible."

Why did Mayr get Slapped?

In short: studying history in the 1920s was a messy business, especially when it came to the French Revolution….

To explain why Mayr ended up getting slapped, please allow me to briefly dive into the French Revolution's historiography during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Keep in mind, that this is a grossly oversimplified version.

Before 1848, it was pretty standard for French republicans to proudly see themselves as inheritors of Robespierre’s legacy. (If you’ve ever wondered why in Les Misérables, Enjolras’ character is very much channeling Robespierre and Saint-Just, here’s your answer!) However, things start to change with the Second Republic.

In 1847, Jules Michelet brought back the negative portrayal of Robespierre as a tyrannical "priest" and leader of a new cult. This narrative helped fuel an increasing dislike for Robespierre, with radicals like Auguste Blanqui arguing that the real revolutionaries were the atheistic Hébertists, not the Robespierrists.

Jump to the Third Republic, and the negative sentiment towards Robespierre was only getting stronger, driven by voices like Hippolyte Taine, who painted Robespierre as a mediocre figure, overwhelmed by his role. This trend was politically motivated, aiming to reshape the Revolution's legacy to align with the Third Republic's secular values. Obviously, Robespierre, the "fanatic pontiff" of the Supreme Being, didn’t quite fit this revised narrative and was made out to be the villain. Alphonse Aulard (a historian willing to stretch the truth to make his point) continued pushing Danton as the face of secular republicanism. Albert Mathiez, one of Aulard’s students, was not having any of it and strongly disagreed with his mentor’s approach.

The general disdain for Robespierre began to shift after World War I. One reason was that people could better appreciate the actions of the Revolutionary Government after experiencing the repression during the war themselves. Albert Mathiez and his colleagues were actively working to change Robespierre's tarnished image. With tensions high, it's no wonder Mayr ended up being publicly slapped by a bunch of poets who were defending the Incorruptible's honour!

Robert Desnos (1900-1945) was a French poet deeply associated with the Surrealist movement, known for his revolutionary contributions to both poetry and resistance during World War II.

Paul Éluard (1895-1952) was a French poet and one of the founding members of the Surrealist movement, celebrated for his lyrical and passionate writings on love and liberty.

Max Ernst (1891-1976) was a German painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and poet, a pioneering figure in the Dada and Surrealist movements known for his inventive use of collage and exploration of the unconscious.

André Breton (1896-1966) was a French writer, poet, and anti-fascist, best known as the principal founder and leading theorist of Surrealism, promoting the liberation of the human mind.
