DISTRICT FOUR
it was, finally, the long awaited reaping ceremony. abby looked around. she saw her fellow friends, kids she went to school with, kids she met while shopping, kids with their whole lives ahead. kids with dreams. kids who did nothing wrong to deserve this— hell, they weren't even alive when the war which caused the games started! yet, they had to continue this tradition. and it was an honour for them.
most of the children were intimidating, strong, stronger than the adults from the poor districts. stronger than people from the district twelve, the district they laughed at, the district from which kids died first on the arena. tributes and future tributes from four weren't like that, they were better. of course, there were bad pieces, weaklings, or - abby's classmates favourite term - idiots. but their life wasn't colorful and little, scared, nine years old abby swore to herself she won't end up like them. she will be the strongest one amongst her friends, both girls and boys, or her life simply won't matter.
so when she gets reaped, they all clap, laugh, playfully nudge and push her, congratulate her. no one even thinks about volunteering for her - how could they steal abby's moment? they were all sure she'll win on the first day, kill everyone on the bloodbath with her bare hands. and that she will do it gladly.
none of them realised she hates the games and everyone who gets entertained by them. she hates her classmates, friends, the careers. and she will do everything to make this game memorable, in the worst way possible. she will win the game, escape the arena and survive but at the capitol's cost.
✧˖°
feel free to share your opinion with me in my inbox ! can you guess which district the reader will be from?? its pretty obvious eheheh

ꨄ Soul Evans x Shy! Fem! Reader ꨄ ~ Part 1 ~
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ᰔ Third Person POV ᰔ
“I-I’m not sure about this…” Said the H/c haired girl. She looked down at her shoes, biting her lip.
“Don’t worry, Y/n.” Said the girl’s weapon. The boy patted Y/n on the back as a small gesture of comfort. “Everything will be fine!” He added.
“You have me Y/n, I won’t let anyone harm you.” Asher said with a comforting smile. Y/n just looked up at him and looked back down. “I know that…but I don’t want to leave…” Y/n said quietly. Asher’s smile faltered a little bit at Y/n’s state.
“Yeah, I don’t wanna leave either.” Asher said, putting the hand that was originally on Y/n’s back to her shoulder. “But look on the bright side,” Asher said. “We’re enrolling into the DWMA! That’s amazing! it’s gonna be alright, trust me!” Asher said, shaking Y/n a little bit. Y/n slowly smiled a little, looking up at Asher. What Asher said was true, they are enrolling into the DWMA. It’s just that they have to leave their town..Y/n loves it here, this is where her home is and having to leave it is what pains her. All these memories that she held within this town still linger.
“I know it may be hard, but we’re gonna do this together, m’kay?” Asher said, looking Y/n in the eye. Y/n nodded at him. Asher brought Y/n into a small hug and Y/n hugged him back. Asher can also agree that he would miss their town here in America, but that he knew that sometimes you have to leave memories behind in order to progress. Y/n and Asher are so skilled in their skills and when they realized about it they got noticed for it, which was huge. “This is a huge opportunity, Y/n! We are in this together and will always will be.” Asher whispered into Y/n’s ear. She smiled up at Asher a little bit as she nodded her head in his neck.
“Let’s get our bags ready, eh?” Asher said.
“Yeah…”

Yandere Mentally Ill! xReader:
Another request from someone else in my second book of yandere stuff.
Yandere: Anderson.
Warning: In this section there are topics such as mental illness, substance use (medications), gore, kidnapping, delusions and hallucinations, as well as mental decline, mention of dead animals and a suicide. They were warned. And pictures are not mine.
Tumblr media
*Narrator PO.V*
Ah, life with mental illness is difficult, not to call it hell, right or not?
Some diseases are milder than others, and even share symptoms with each other, but containing their notable differences that characterize them. That was the disturbing case of a boy named Anderson, who was a victim of the terrifying mental illness called Schizophrenia, unlike his twin brother Axel, who was healthy compared to his brother.
Anderson constantly had visual and auditory hallucinations about things that weren't really there, causing him to see himself as "the crazy weirdo" in school and family. The only one who never told him that was Axel, since they got along very well with each other and Axel, thanks to his brother's Schizophrenia, became interested in the subject of mental illness until high school.
Anderson was going to mental health specialists from a very young age and in general his Schizophrenia was not cured but controlled due to the medications prescribed by the doctors.
Or at least until adulthood.
And why do I say it like that? Because when he finished his studies and got ready to work, still under his proper psychological care and medication, he met a girl, a new neighbor to be more specific.
--Hmm, hello, I guess… You are the new neighbor-- He walked over seeing how pretty she was as she finished loading the last cardboard box with her belongings.
--hmm? Oh yeah, it's me, and you're…?-- As soon as their eyes met, he felt a kind of small palpitation in his chest, but Anderson didn't know exactly what it was.
--I'm Anderson, nice to meet you, can I help you?-- The girl politely shook her head and introduced herself as (Y/n), to which Anderson said that he was welcome to her and if she needed anything she would let him know and he would help her.
Poor girl.
Tumblr media
Time passed and the girl adapted to her new neighborhood, which was quieter than her previous neighborhood. She came from a toxic family environment from which she has now completely disassociated herself. She dedicated herself to working as a nurse in a hospital near her new home, which was quite nice, although somewhat small, but since she would live alone, it did not hurt her at all.
However, she did not know that her tranquility would be affected again after meeting Anderson, whom she noticed as a bit strange, but she supposed that it would only be a passing feeling.
--Uff, finally-- She said somewhat tired after arranging the remaining things from her last box, which were the glasses and some other dishes that are now in their respective places in the kitchen, then she goes to her room and lies down on her bed to rest. It was already night anyway and tomorrow she has work, so she preferred to fall asleep.
Unaware that someone was harassing her from her window in another house.
Tumblr media
Two years have passed since that first meeting, it was already March 2020 and covid-19 was at its strongest, so (Y/n) spent most of his time in his respective hospital working from Monday to Friday from very early until very late, and on Saturdays from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM, without much noticing the danger that lurked in her path.
But Anderson had other things on his mind. He fell madly in love with her, to the point that he "forgot" to take his medications, which made him gradually have visual and auditory hallucinations of (Y/n) having a beautiful friendship with him, and what has Axel done before All this? When he found out that his brother had gradually stopped taking his medication, he threatened to send him to the asylum if he didn't listen, and Anderson distanced himself from him.
--Oh (Y/n), you're so cute-- Things got to a point where not only did the unbelievable harassment of poor (Y/n) increase, but she couldn't tell what was a hallucination or what was reality in general.
--Oh, thanks-- It was what "__" ended up answering.
--Would you be my girlfriend?-- Yes, he had fallen very much in love with her, to the point of hallucinating that and hearing voices that told him things like "get rid of the competition", "Don't take those pills, your brother just wants to see you suffer separated from (Y/n) ", "KILL THE COMPETITION NOW" and a lot of other things. He believed that (Y/n) loved him back, but she wasn't really interested in Anderson in the slightest no matter how pretty she thought he looked.
She was constantly harassed by him, and this made her feel super grossed out and insecure on a very frequent basis, however, that wasn't the worst of it. Things got out of control when he broke into her house while she was sleeping and kidnapped her in the basement of his house, without telling Axel that Anderson had prepared the basement for her exclusively, since it was very spacious and thanks to his hallucinations, "(Y/n)" loved what he did to her.
--We're finally as close as we've always wanted to be, love-- He approached the terrified and confused girl, who had barely spoken to him in all the time she and he spoke.
--Hmmmmm? (But what are you talking about?)-- She tried to untie herself, but she couldn't.
Hell has begun.
Tumblr media
Time passed and everything got worse.
While Anderson believed through his hallucinations that he and "(Y/n)" had a perfect romantic life and that she loved him, the real (Y/n) actually suffered from the worst mistreatment by Anderson in that basement that he unconsciously gave her, since she believed in his mind that they just had "normal little couple arguments", this experience being MUCH worse than when she lived with her evil parents.
--(Y/N)! COME BACK HERE!-- Every time she tried to run away, he would drag her back to him. Not to mention another important fact, and that is that on every Valentine's Day, even before the kidnapping, Anderson gave him more and more macabre gifts such as organs from dead animals such as rodents, mainly hearts, since due to his hallucinations, he believed that he I was giving away nice things.
That only made her more terrified, especially the time she found a dead rabbit in a box. The poor little animal had a heart cooked on its chest, from which (Y/n), as a nurse, suspected that someone very disgusting and evil had already taken it out, and on the lid of the box it said "I love you very much". Maybe Anderson thought it was a stuffed animal because of his illness and that's why he didn't realize what he was actually doing to that poor animal.
--Ah, Sweetheart-- He hugged her from behind and then kissed her cheek while she was just paralyzed with fear.
--Why do you avoid me? Are you mad at me?-- She was crying, although Anderson didn't see that. The girl had quite a few bruises on her due to the mistreatment that Anderson unconsciously gave her, but for him they were just common couple arguments as always.
Was it mentioned that (Y/n) and Anderson had had sexual relations? Well, if they had done it, with (Y/n) giving in for fear of the worst abuse and mistreatment a few months ago, without getting pregnant since she was sterile, and therefore, could not have children and she had been aware of that for a long time, but Anderson "I saw" that it "pregnated" her and here began the real and hair-raising descent into madness.
--We will be the best parents-- He kissed her cheek as he caressed her non-existent swollen belly.
Tumblr media
Something happened.
Something a little… loud.
Anderson and she were "arguing" and (Y/n) was "in her last month of pregnancy", however, Anderson, in his hallucination, saw that "(Y/n)" began to bleed and give some screams of pain for a few seconds and fell sitting on the chair, so he thought she was giving birth and "helped" her.
Yes, he helped her on the sofa with the baby, however, the adrenaline did not allow him to think well about taking her to a hospital.
And speaking of hospitals…
Someone had been working in a mental hospital for quite some time, and that was none other than Axel, Anderson's healthy twin brother, with whom the latter had a big fight for not giving in to taking his medications. By now it was already January 2022, and Axel was beginning to consider the idea of trying to visit him to see how he was doing, or that he would try to invite him to his house, why? because she was beginning to suspect that he was not taking his medications.
--Hmm, what can I do?-- Now, Axel has a lot of sympathy for his brother, and it hurt him that Anderson distanced himself from him for not wanting to take his medication that time. But he said he'd take them again, but Axel isn't buying that, and even though he's tired of fighting, he adores his brother and doesn't want to see him broke or in the asylum.
She has even kept a diary about how she felt about this topic, the suspicions she had, and other medical issues she works on. In his spare time, while having a coffee after having followed up one of his many patients with schizophrenia during the day.
<Uff, to try this again, and if not, I will have to intern him> He sighed tiredly after thinking this and taking a sip of his cup of coffee while he walked a little around the room or office. He looked at his watch and realized that his shift is over, so he gathered his things, closed his office and got ready to go home in his car.
As he drove, he thought that he could get closer to Anderson and try to invite him to his house as something casual, invite him to eat and then take the opportunity to secretly give him his medications.
Yes, that would.
Meanwhile, Anderson, unaware of reality, always found a horrible smell, so "his girlfriend" told him to perfume the floor, and it worked, in fact. So he put his plan into action, right away.
Tumblr media
The days passed.
It was already February 14.
Axel had been inviting Anderson to make amends, which yes, for a large part he wanted that, but for another large part, he wanted to make sure he was okay, and today, February 14, would be no exception at all.
--You know? I finally got a pretty girl like no girlfriend, we even had a son-- While Axel looked at him confused, Anderson sounded passionate about his beloved and her baby. By this time, Anderson had already taken the medicine without realizing it, which Axel celebrated mentally so as not to raise suspicions, and everything was going smoothly until a call resounded in the room, so Axel went to answer it.
--------------------------------Call----------------------------------
--Yes? Hello? Who speaks?-- Axel asked waving.
--Good afternoon, are you a certain Axel Stevenson? Brother of Anderson Stevenson?-- Who was speaking was another man next to the phone, which confused Axel a bit, who was still unaware of the terrifying context.
--Yes, it's me, what's going on and who do I talk to?-- Axel replied confused.
--I am Police Officer William Mendez. Anderson Stevenson's neighbors contacted us because they detected a rotten smell in his house, is his brother here so we can talk to him directly?-- And if Axel was confused before, now alarmed and even worse. His suspicions that his brother was off his meds were becoming more and more certain, but what the hell had Anderson done to his house to make it smell that way to the point that the police had to be called?
--Um… yes, he is, let me call you for a moment-- He left the phone for a moment to signal to his brother that they were calling him, to which he came and Axel went to finish collecting some things, and while that, he hears his brother say something like:
--HOW IS SHE DEAD?! I-I'm going there-- Axel was more disturbed to hear his brother like that. So immediately after Anderson hung up the call, he dropped everything and got in his car to walk him home.
*End of Call*
Tumblr media
The twins had arrived and the police were outside, so Anderson hurriedly went inside while Axel stood outside talking to the guards. Anderson was walking down the corridor in which he ran into the dried blood, which formed a trail and upon reaching the room, he ran into the body of his beloved (Y/n) with stab marks, especially in the stomach from which his guts protruded and brains and in front of her was the stroller that Anderson bought for her son and when she got closer to see its state, she realized a harsh and terrifying reality.
His son was actually a mass of meat and brains coming out of the guts of (Y/n), where the belly was supposed to be.
His precious son never existed.
It was all a cruel hallucination.
Then he remembered the time he had the hallucination in which his "pregnant girlfriend" was starting to bleed and "give birth" and that's when he understood everything.
She wasn't bleeding because she was giving birth, but because Anderson himself had killed her and unconsciously ripped out her guts, pretending that this was the son that never was.
In the end… as a Valentine's gift… he got that cruel news as the only gift of the day of love and friendship. A girlfriend he killed because of his illness and a son who never existed apart from a mental breakdown. Axel was also witnessing everything and to tell the truth he was shocked, disgusted, in denial phase and finally the most difficult one, acceptance.
Tumblr media
*Axel PO.V*
It's been a while since that tragic February 14, 2022. My brother was to blame for that tragic murder of that poor girl whom he may have hallucinated as his girlfriend, product of his schizophrenia and as much as it hurt me, I had to commit him to hospital. the city madhouse. And do not think that I have enjoyed this, on the contrary, it hurt me a lot in the soul but it is a sacrifice that I had to make.
No, he's not in the same mental hospital where I work. That would be a lot of emotional burden for me, and for him too, but I have a friend who is the one who evaluates him and says that now he is constantly medicated, sometimes by force, and that he spends his time in his room looking mostly at nothing when no one but him is there, or else, he spent his time scratching the name of that girl and her non-existent son on the walls.
It was also partly my fault for letting him distance himself from me. And you know what? That case, unfortunately for me, became public, and since I am similar to my brother, except for a few small details, sometimes people tell me not very nice comments, so I was forced to change my appearance.
--Why does this have to be like this?-- This situation sometimes makes me want to cry from the great sadness that it gave me to see how someone I loved very much during my childhood and adolescence despite our fights, has collapsed to such an extent.
Tumblr media
*Narrator PO.V*
Anderson was constantly medicated in that asylum where there were others like him. I was in a padded room and wearing a white straitjacket most of the time.
--Forgive me, (Y/n)-- It was what he constantly whispered while having that tragic memory over and over again, even in his nightmares for a long two years in which his brother Axel would visit him from time to time since the parents of the twins found out what their son Anderson did, they wanted nothing to do with him.
In the end… Anderson ended up committing suicide, overdosing on medication when he had the opportunity to steal it.
And all for a tragic Valentine's gift.
-The End.

6 characters: house, cuddy, wilson and the original ducklings
OH YEAH
Push off a cliff house but for pure fun, he would probably enjoy it. i just need to do it in a way that he never sees it coming so he doesn't insult me about being too obvious before falling
Kiss i’m putting wilson here and not in the marry one because that's not his strongest area
Marry chase because cameron did him dirty there. my poor boy just has loads of issues but can be loved.
Wrap a Blanket around LISA CUDDY DESERVES IT i just can’t add more than that tbh
Be Roommates with foreman i just NEED to experience that. we're very much alike (actually it freaks me out how similar i am to him. i’m more like a mix between him and todd anderson from dps) so i’m sure our shared apartment could either be hell or pure heaven
Set on Fire cameron out of pure ruling out. not my favorite character but definitely does not deserve to be set on fire. i’m sorry allison :(
please send me more i’m obsessed with these 6 characters game

I have the top part or we did and it was what we're saying that the guy has a lot of strength and a lot of people don't they just don't have that and they try to work out and they do okay there's nothing wrong with it but you guys when you do you try to jam it to people and it's ugly cuz people know you're not really that much stronger you're funny guy is half a strong he has a knife when you're done
Thor Freya
Yeah there's something going around we look ridiculous and sound it I find out we don't have all the stuff people are taking a lot of things and I took all the stuff already and it's still massively arrogant it's gross

Green's Party Guide to the 2024 Oscar Nominated Short Films
Anyone who knows me knows I am a longtime champion of the Short Film categories for Animation, Live Action and Documentary at the Academy Awards, mainly because I have made short films and I know how hard it can be to tell a story in a short amount of time. I am very excited to continue my annual tradition of showcasing the Oscar Nominated Short Films (read the  2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 guides).
Tumblr media
2024 movie poster
This year’s nominated short films are available from ShortsTV both in theaters and online. I’ve watched all of them and here are my thoughts and predictions:
Best Live Action Short Film:
This year's Live Action Short Film nominees is one of the strongest collection of nominees in years! The After (U.K.) was produced by Neon Films and distributed by Netflix. In this heavy drama, after a traumatic experience with his family Dayo (played by David Oyelowo) becomes a rideshare driver and one of his jobs helps him to confront the past. Oyelowo (who also produced this film) has been excellent in a number of films including Selma and The Butler, and this is truly a showcase for him! Red, White and Blue (U.S.) was produced by Samantha Bee. In this drama, a single mother (played by Brittany Snow, another notable actress) bring her young daughter with her as she crosses state lines to get an abortion. Without getting into spoilers, it goes from a sobering to even more sobering and has a lot to say about the need for reproductive rights in all states. Knight of Fortune (Denmark) is about a man who's at a morgue to say goodbye to his suddenly deceased wife and he forms an unlikely friendship with another widower. In a category filled with heavy dramas, this one is among the heaviest, but there's also a humanity to it in showing in a very fragile state how a total strange can lend a helping hand. Invincible (Canada) is based on a true story of the last 48 hours of a 14-year-old boy's life while he's in a juvenile center. While there are some powerful moments, it does feel like at times like it's a feature being squeezed into a short. Netflix's The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (U.S. / U.K.) is the most high-profile as it's from director Wes Anderson adapting from Roald Dahl and it was released on Netflix in September. Anderson had previously adapted Dahl's The Fantastic Mr. Fox and this time he's adapted a 37 min. film but with the same scale as a feature. The film explores a variety of stories narrated by Dahl (played by Ralph Fiennes), the main story being about Henry Sugar (Benedict Cumberbatch), who is able to predict the future and see through objects thanks to a book he stole. This one is easily the biggest budget, most star-studded and most visually impressive.
Will Win: The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is the clear frontrunner. Wes Anderson has been Oscar-nominated in a number of other categories (Screenwriting both Original and Adapted, Animated Feature director, Directing, and producing Best Picture) and yet he has never won even though he is one of the most critically acclaimed and innovative directors working today. In some ways it is kind of unfair that an A-list director makes a short film on the scale of a feature when so many Live Action Shorts are low budget and trying to make something impressive in a short amount of time and don't have nearly the resources Anderson does to be able to get this cast, the production design and to adapt Dahl. On the other hand there's no rule that says Live Action Shorts are meant for newcomers and directors early in their career...so survival of the fittest. But something that needs to be said about this year's crop of nominees is that there's a lot of heavy drama, and this one is charming and lighter in contrast, which could steal the thunder.
Should Win: I'm going to have to say a tie. Henry Sugar is highly impressive, but Red, White and Blue stayed with me and had a twist that was devastating.
Best Animated Short Film:
This is also a great year for animated short nominees: Our Uniform (Iran) is about an Iranian girl unleashing her memories of school as she looks at her old uniform. The animation style and aesthetic is very unique. Letter to a Pig (Israel / France) is about a Holocaust survivor speaking to a classroom about how a pig saved his life and a student goes into a dream about it. This is very heavy and intense. But I do feel like animation purists are going to have an issue with the fact that is also used some live action footage interspersed with the animation. But either way, this is a very innovative approach to the subject matter. Pachyderme (France) looks at a young girl visiting her grandparents in the Summer countryside. A young female protagonist and/or a woman looking back at her younger self is a common theme in this year's nominees, but this one has some gothic and horror elements to it. Ninety-Five Senses (U.S.) is directed by Jared Hess (yes the director of Napoleon Dynamite is an Oscar-nominee) and his wife Jerusha Hess (writer with Jared on several films and Austenland). An old cowboy (played by actor/director Tim Blake Nelson) reflects on the body's five senses in his lifetime as he's about to run out of time. Let me just say I was not into Napoleon Dynamite at all, but what got my attention more than the directors was Tim Blake Nelson, an underrated actor who shines in everything he's in. I kind of liked how the animation changes within each sense Coy describes and also how it has a sense of nostalgia about the pre-digital era. WAR IS OVER! Inspired by the Music of John and Yoko (U.S.) got my attention immediately as I am a lifelong Beatle / John Lennon fanatic. It was co-written by Sean Ono Lennon, who also co-produced with his mom Yoko Ono. Director Dave Mullins was previously nominated in this category for Pixar's 2017 short Lou. Set during a World War I front, a pigeon carries messages between two soldiers playing chess, unaware they are on opposite sides. There is no dialogue and the music score of Pixar veteran Thomas Newman enhances the powerful anti-war message of this colorful visual feat!
In addition to the official nominees, ShortsTV is including two additional films in the Best Animated Short Film program, both of which were on the short list but did not get nominated. Wild Summon (U.K.) is narrated by Marianne Faithfull and it was produced by Oscar-winner Adam McKay. It looks at the lifecycle of the wild salmon as it looks in human form. While it is a bit long, there is a strong environmental message to it. I'm Hip (U.S.) was directed by animation veteran John Musker, who was nominated for two Oscars for Animated Feature for The Princess and the Frog and Moana. This is about a hip cat who sings a song about how hip he is to the world around him...who don't agree.
Should Win: WAR IS OVER! is the best of this year's strong crop. With the state of the world what it is right now, an anti-war message anchored by a John and Yoko's "Happy Xmas" made a very strong statement. I'm a huge fan of Sean Lennon and it'd be awesome to see him accept!
Will Win: WAR IS OVER! Not only is there the name recognition of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, but the World War I setting completely driven by visuals and no dialogue will go a long way.
Best Documentary Short Film:
This is a great year for Short Docs: Nai Nai & Wài Pó (U.S. with Mandarin subtitles) was a festival hit acquired by Disney+. Director Sean Wang makes a touching and personal profile of his grandmothers who live together and dance, exercise and joke together. There is a sadness about mortality, but there's also a sense of humor to this that makes the subjects seem funnier than it would in another director's hands. The Barber of Little Rock (U.S.) is produced by Liz Garbus (a two-time Oscar nominee for Best Documentary Feature) and the New Yorker. In Little Rock, AR a local barber Arlo Washington has founded People Trust, a non-profit community bank fostering economic progress for underserved and underbanked residents. This doc looks at a number of people who have collaborated with People Trust (each of whom could easily be the subject of their own doc), but the through line is very much Arlo who is fighting the good fight to provide opportunities a lot of banks are not and to help the community as a whole. Island in Between  (Taiwan) is produced by the New York Times. The doc's director S. Leo Chiang reflects on his own relationship with Taiwan, United States and China from the islands of Kinmen, just off of mainland China. The cinematography is breathtaking to say the least! The ABCs of Book Banning (U.S.) was produced by MTV Documentary Films. It was co-directed by Sheila Nevins (a big doc producer and executive who is just now directing) and was co-directed by Trish Adams (a previous Oscar nominee for Best Doc Feature for GasLand) and Nazenet Habtezghi (a producer on American Experience). This looks at the topical issue of banned books from school districts in recent years. Instead of just documenting the battles and the politicians who campaigned for book banning, this doc talks with children and in some cases the authors of some of the banned books. This is very thought-provoking and lends itself to a longer conversation after the film is over. The act of saying a book cannot be read in a school district raises bigger issues and concerns about intent and prejudice. By the end of the film, I truly wished we could force Desantis and his staff to watch this! The Last Repair Shop  (U.S.) was produced by L.A. Times and distributed by Disney+ and it was co-directed by Kris Bowers and Ben Proudfoot, who are veterans in this category having been nominated A Concerto is a Conversation at the 2021 Oscars and Ben won for last year's The Queen of Basketball. Here Proudfoot and Bowers (an accomplished music composer for numerous films) look at Los Angeles, one of the few cities that offer to repair music instruments for the public school students at no cost. The doc looks at the repair shop, but more specifically the four craftspeople who specialize in these instruments as well as the students who play them. This is very much a doc that pulls at the heartstrings. But what I loved about this is that it is really an analogy about how music can be something that brings people of all walks of life together to make something beautiful.
Should Win: Some highly impressive docs in this category this year, but The ABC's of Book Banning made the strongest statement. But do not discount The Last Repair Shop, also about the need for art in our society.
Will Win: This could go any number of ways, but the fact that The Last Repair Shop is now on Disney+ and was broadcast on ABC-TV, definitely raises its profile significantly. The fact that it was a bigger budget doc with a sweet message is going to go a long way too!
This year's Oscar Nominated Short Films can be seen online from ShortsTV as well as select movie theaters including programs at Coolidge Corner Theatre and Landmark Kendall Square Cinema.

Getting into Hellsing proper as an adult is really funny. All my friends read it in middle school, and I kinda didn't understand the hype cus the art style gave me "hentai artist turned serious writer" vibes, which very rarely turns out well narratively, and all I knew about it was that Alucard was depressed and horny and all my female friends had a crush on him, which was not something I cared about as a 13 year old boy. I find Alucard a lot more interesting as an adult (and goddamn if his role as the male Trump Card of this ruthless vampire hunting organization and his contrast with his more...submissive and vulnerable side around Integra isn't the coolest shit ever), but I still stand by the belief that he's not even the most interesting character, he's absurdly powerful, charismatic, and fun to watch in random settings cus you always know he's gonna turn someone into a cherry smoothie by the end of the interaction, but not my favorite character by a longshot.
By the end of my watch, my favorite characters were hands down, Anderson, Integra, Maxwell, and Walter. Their backstories and positions in the drawn out war were the most interesting to me, and I especially thought the Iscariot branch of the church was the most fascinating organization in the show. Anderson sacrificing his humanity for one more chance at taking down a vampire, just cus his faith in god and purpose were that intense, watching the guy get really solemn and emotional after basically having to put down his own son for rising to fascism (imagine raising a little boy who's clearly very ambitious and power hungry from the jump and just having to sit there stony faced while he gets eaten alive by ghouls yelling out "ANDERSON PLEASE HELP ME I DON'T DESERVE THIS", like holy fucking shit. It's like watching the parent of a school shooter sit there while their kid has to pay for his crimes against humanity) gently carrassing his head in his lap and shutting his eyes and murmuring about how stupid he was to try to carry out a fuckin. 1500s esque Catholic crusade in 1999, dropping an "I wish I'd been born a force of nature so I never had to feel anything like this." Like fuck. The whole time you think the guy is just your standard raving Catholic old guy with cool weapons and cool hair and a badass coat, then you realize he's kinda spent the last 30 years raising these people he's fighting alongside as if they were his own children, and then sending them off to war. I'd be fucking crazy and bloodthirsty too, after all that.
Then you have Integra, whose position as the only female with a knight title in an organization full of old white dudes is pretty much the entire core of her character. But she carries herself with such confidence and toughness that you wouldn't guess it bothered her at all. She kicks a lot of ass and barks orders with no hesitation and takes very good care of her men while else holding them to realistic standards and not tolerating any slack or backtalk, and deals with most problems that would make even the biggest strongest dudes shit their pants with total apathy and control. It's so cool and incredibly attractive inspiring. I guess there's little else to be expected from a lady who lost her dad and almost got killed by her uncle within a 24 hour span when she was like, 9 or 10, an experience like that will definitely put hair on your chest. And the twist at the end with Walter brought me from "oh, cool old guy" to "INSANELY cool old guy". The whole time the guy was just as crazy-- if not more crazy by virtue of betraying queen and country and holding all of that fury in for as long as he did-- as anyone else who worked for that organization, he was just way better at hiding it. And it's not like his motives were unjustified; I mean, everyone is scared of being old and useless and forgotten a little bit, everyone always feels like they have something to prove, he just actually had the balls to act on it. Hellsing takes a lot of questions and aspects of humanity's biggest flaws and the human condition and kinda just. Leaves you to your own devices to decipher what it all means. It's so dope.

'Anatomy of a Fall' wins Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival
CANNES
Justine Triet's “Anatomy of a Fall” won the Palme d'Or at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in a ceremony Saturday that handed the festival's prestigious top prize to a twisty French Alps courtroom drama.
“Anatomy of a Fall,” which stars Sandra Hüller as a writer trying to prove her innocence in her husband’s death, is only the third film directed by a woman to win the Palme d'Or. One of the two previous winners, Julia Ducournau, was on this year's jury.
Cannes' Grand Prix, its second prize, went to Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” a chilling Martin Amis adaptation about a German family living next door to Auschwitz.
The awards were decided by a jury presided over by two-time Palme winner Ruben Östlund, the Swedish director who won the prize last year for “Triangle of Sadness.” The ceremony preceded the festival's closing night film, the Pixar animation “Elemental.”
The jury prize went to Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki’s “Fallen Leaves," a deadpan love story about a romance that blooms in a loveless workaday world where dispatches from the war in Ukraine regularly play on the radio.
Best actor went to veteran Japanese star Koji Yakusho, who plays a reflective, middle-aged Tokyo man who cleans toilets in Wim Wenders' “Perfect Days.” Wenders' film is a gentle, quotidian character study.
The Turkish actor Merve Dizdar took best actress for the Nuri Bilge Ceylan's “About Dry Grasses.” Ceylan's expansive tale is set in snowy eastern Anatolia about a teacher, Samet (Deniz Celiloğlu), accused of misconduct by a young female student. Dizdar plays as a friend both attracted and repelled by Samet.
“The character I portray in the film is someone who is fighting for her life and she's overcome a lot of difficulties. Under normal circumstances, I would have had to work hard on this character,” said Dizdar.
“I understand what it's like to be a woman in this area of the country,” she continued. “I would like to dedicate this prize to all the women who are fighting to exist and overcome difficulties in this world and to retrain hope.”
Tumblr media
Vietnamese-French director Tràn Anh Hùng took best director for “Pot-au-Feu," a lush, foodie love story starring Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel and set in a 19th century French gourmet château.
Best screenplay was won by Yuji Sakamoto for “Monster.” Sakamoto penned Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda's nuanced drama, with shifting perspectives, about two boys struggling for acceptance in their school at home. “Monster” also won the Queer Palm, an honor bestowed by journalists for the festival's strongest LGBTQ-themed film.
Quentin Tarantino, who won Cannes' top award for “Pulp Fiction," attended the ceremony to present a tribute to filmmaker Roger Corman. Tarantino praised Corman for filling him and countless moviegoers with “unadulterated cinema pleasure.”
“My cinema is uninhibited, full of excess and fun,” said Corman, the independent film maverick. “I feel like this what Cannes is about.”
The festival's Un Certain Regard section handed out its awards on Friday, giving the top prize to Molly Manning Walker's debut feature, “How to Have Sex.”
Saturday’s ceremony drew to close a Cannes edition that hasn't lacked spectacle, stars or controversy.
The biggest wattage premieres came out of competition. Martin Scorsese debuted his Osage murders epic “Killers of the Flower Moon,” a sprawling vision of American exploitation with Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone. “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” Harrison Ford’s Indy farewell, launched with a tribute to Ford. Wes Anderson premiered “Asteroid City.”
The festival opened on a note of controversy. “Jeanne du Barry,” a period drama co-starring Johnny Depp as Louis XV, played as the opening night film. The premiere marked Depp's highest profile appearance since the conclusion of his explosive trial last year with ex-wife Amber Heard.
The selection of “Jeanne du Barry” added to criticisms of Cannes for being too hospitable to men accused of abusive behavior.

REVIEW | "Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko" | B3 - Boston Bastard Brigade
Tumblr media
It’s often the kindest people that are the most gullible. Yet even when fate deals them a bad hand, those folks will still bet it all in hopes that the table’s bluffing. Win or lose, the best revenge to enact on rough patches of life is to keep on living well. That is the big lesson in the forefront of Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko, the latest film from director Ayumu Watanabe (After the Rain) and Studio 4ºC (MFKZ).
Based on the novel by Kanako Nishi, Forutne Favors Lady Nikuko focuses on its titular character (Shinobu Otake), a single mother to daughter Kikuko (Cocomi). She’s a big woman, whose loud personality makes her the talk of the small fisherman’s town. Yet her gentleness and kind heart has no bounds, a trait that Kikuko knows can be both her strongest and weakest point. The two take things day-by-day, as friendship conflicts, the discovery of boys, and a mysterious aspect of Nikuko’s past take the two through life’s strange-yet-relatable motions.
Tumblr media
One thing this film does right is the presentation of Nikuko herself. At first, it would appear that her weight and personality are some sort of comic relief, which they do have their funny moments. But Nikuko is not a character meant to be laughed at, but rather with, as she tackles hardships with a big smile and plenty of food ready to consume. In a way, she’s very reminiscent of the late Louie Anderson’s performance of the endearing mother Christine in Baskets, one that looks to be funny at first before transforming into one of the best & brightest characters around.
Kikuko, on the other hand, brings a realistic portrayal of a girl on the verge of womanhood. She embraces her tomboyish ways, with hopes of never getting her period and having her body stays the same. But a new glimmer of life comes into her life when she gets closer to classmate Ninomiya (Natsuki Hanae), who brings forth some of the funniest and expressive facial expressions not seen since 2018’s Asobi Asobase. Nikuko’s daughter also deals with conflict with her friend Maria (Izumi Ishii), as the two middle schoolers deal with finding their place in school in ways that counter one another.

Johan Anderson man... This guy is the heart of Season 3 and really showed just how much Judai was falling.
He exposes Judai's flaws, his fears and inspires him.
In the dual with Cobra, Johan saw Judai was afraid and that Cobra's words were getting to him.. So he made a joke and told Judai that hey its okay.
He's not dumb, he knew this wasn't the time for jokes but knew that's what Judai needed. He needed to be strong for Judai.
He also showed himself to be a leader, a responsibility Judai himself is happy to pass onto him. He's the one who gets the students to chill and sorts the plan out when the whole zombie shit goes down.
Johan defends himself when that guy tried to steal his deck and is so worried that Judai... Already exhausted and hurt comes to save him. Because Judai shouldn't have to save him, shouldn't drop his own wellbeing for him.
Because Judai's so used to being on a pedestal by others as the hero who saves them all he can't cope... He doesn't know what to do.
Johan repeatedly asks if Judai's okay before Judai can even say anything, he just knows.
He's one of the most strongest dualists in his generation, said by Pegasus himself.
Personally I believe Judai's downfall started in Season 2 when he lost the ability to see his cards that's the lowest I've ever seen him.
(Could be wrong could be earlier if I check)
And Johan doesn't let him hide it and talks to him. And Judai thinks the world of him, sees him as not just an equal but someone he can aspire to be.
Heck Judai gets upset that his reason for dualing isn't as noble or great at Johan's and he's the one who supports him with that.
Johan has so much faith in Judai.
He became his literal rock. And when he dissappeared Jaden was back where he started but couldn't cope.
He was erratic and desperate. Now Judai would've been desperate if it was any of his friends yes but I definitely don't think it'd have had the same effect.
Johan kept him grounded, let him feel vulnerable and allowed Judai to put his faith in others and not bare everything alone.
That's why Yubel possessed Johan because "the love Judai had for them was given to Johan instead"
And they wanted him to suffer and who else would make Judai that desperate.
Johan is a great character because of how he fits in the narrative but Judai himself, he's the version of Judai, that Judai wishes he could be.
And Johan admires Judai, his spirit his heart and who is as a person. That smile he shared with him during the whole Syrus almost drowned thing was nothing short of fondness.
And when it comes to their ship I can absolutely see Judai feeling he isn't enough for Johan because he's caused him so much pain and Judai's changed both physically and mentally and how can you...
And Johan would accept him like he always has.
In conclusion: Crystal boi is a good boi and deserves everything and he's so awesome and badass and just yes. His number one fan is Judai.

The Strongest Bond
Tumblr media
Warnings: Mention of Blood, Foyet, marriage, pregnancy, uhhh. I think that’s it? Let me know if I missed something.
Also, I said, PE (that’s my major… but if you hate that class, no hard feelings, just read it as your fav class). Used the last name of Montgomery because I’m not creative and put a little TGibby into this as I mention Hotch golfs.
(NOT MY GIF)
WC: 2308
You were 10 when your Dad moved to Quantico with you and your mom. He had been offered the Unit Chief position for the FBI’s BAU. A prestigious and elite unit. You didn’t want to leave your friends but your dad promised that you and him would always be best friends. You and him were always close, you never wanted your mom, you always wanted him. You had to call him everynight when he was away on cases. The first case he spent working in another state; that was the worst thing for both of you. However, he’d read to you every night so you’d go to bed. And shortly being the Unit Chief for a year, Jack was born. He still promised that no matter where he was at, you two would still have the strongest bond.
While a couple years passed and you graduated middle school, your parents had gotten divorced and every second you could, you always stayed with your Dad. You hated your mom for divorcing him. And then Foyet happened. You saw your dad in the hospital bed and refused to leave his side. You kept telling your Dad, “what about our strongest bond! We can’t have the strongest bond when I have to go into protective custody.” You fought with your mom about going into protective custody and when your Dad knew he wasn’t going to win the battle with you leaving him, then he made rules for you to follow. When he was away on cases, you’d stay with the neighbor, not going out on Saturday nights. He knew you were only a freshman in high school, but he was a high schooler once.
Then the day happened, it was a Friday and you were hanging out with a couple friends. Then Spencer called, saying Foyet had your mom and Jack in your old house. When Anderson picked you up from your friend's house, he drove to your childhood home, and you saw Jack with JJ outside. You hugged your little brother and by the looks of it, deep down, you knew what was inside wasn’t good. You were afraid you’d see your Dad dead. You tried running inside and Spencer and Rossi grabbed you, but you just told them to let go of you. You ran to wear you heard Morgan and heard someone sobbing. And it broke your heart because you knew it was your dad’s cries. You ran into the bedroom that your mom and dad once shared. And there she was, laying there, covered in blood. Your dad was crying over her body.
You just said, “Mom.” Your dad looked up at you, stood up, and grabbed your falling body as you broke down.
After losing your mom, you didn’t want to start high school, you didn’t want to do anything. You wanted to leave Virginia. This place was not good, yes it was the birthplace of your little brother, who you loved, but you didn’t want to be here. Not anymore, not when the memories were starting to be bad.
However, being the best Dad there was, he made you excited. You started school the next week and when you walked into your PE class, that’s when you met him. You met the guy you swore you’d marry one day. You two quickly became friends. Then one night, he asked you on a date. You knew that if you told your dad, he’d have Garcia do a full background check on him and his family.
After a couple weeks of just hanging out during lunch and working out together, you learned many things about Brad and his family. You were falling for him harder everytime, and little did you know, so was he.
One night, you were up late, texting Brad, and your Dad walked into your room to tell you to head to bed, but when he saw your face light up at the screen, he knew a boy was texting you. When he asked you who it was, you told him it was your best friend, but your Dad was the best profiler in the FBI (well, at least that’s what you thought, he’d been your hero ever since you were born). When you had said goodnight to him, he closed your door, and walked to his room. Laying on his bed, your dad knew it was only a matter of time before you wouldn’t want to spend time with him and Jack anymore, and you’d be worried about falling in love.
Telling your dad was the hardest and easiest thing to do. You and Brad had been dating for a month before you decided to tell your Dad. Walking into his room at 10:30 at night, he shot up out of bed when you asked to talk to him. He called you over to his bed and you sat across from him. All you had to do was break the news, you weren’t a profiler and weren’t interested in being a profiler but sometimes you could read your dad.
“Dad, there’s this boy, who’s super sweet, and his name is Brad, and he’s the best thing that’s happened to me ever since Mom’s death.”
He looked at you and slowly exhaled. He knew that the time had come for his baby girl to tell him there was a boy.
“Y/N/N, I’m happy you were able to tell me, I’m upset you couldn’t come to me sooner, but I understand you needed your space and figured out how you felt.”
“I know it’s gotta be hard seeing me fall in love after you lost mom, but I promise you, what we have, nothing will ever change that. We have the strongest bond, remember?”
He just pulled you into a hug and said in your ear, “Garcia’s doing a full background check on him tomorrow, I need his full name, and I want to meet him before you go on your next date.”
You pulled away and just smiled, telling him goodnight. And while you walked out the door, you said, “Brad Montgomery”.
The next 7 years flew by quickly, Brad had been in the FBI academy, and you finished your degree in Physical Education, and Jack and your Dad had absolutely adored Brad. Jack and Brad had developed a bond that you always wished for. Your dad and Brad would go golfing when your Dad had free time, forcing him to actually leave work and not worry about it. But while they were golfing, the question that your dad feared the most was finally asked. You and Brad had planned a trip to Florida for your 8 year anniversary. Your dad and Brad stopped golfing that minute and started looking for the perfect ring for you, and when Jack found out he’d be the co-best man, he was so excited, and knew he had to keep it a surprise.
Being on the beach, you were just taking a late night, moonlight stroll. Walking and being with Brad just made your heart flutter, especially with him being in the Academy and wanting to transfer into the BAU (which wasn’t something you or your dad agreed with, but Brad wasn’t going to be a Hotchner, YOU were going to be a montgomery).
Then, a little while further into your walk, you saw it, you saw the candles and the light up letters that said, “Marry Me”. You immediately started crying before Brad could even get you to the main spot. When he finally got on one night, he pulled out the ring and said, “(Y/N Hotchner, we’ve been together for 8 years, and every single day of the past 8 years, I’ve fallen in love with you even more. I want to wake up with you every single day, kiss your face goodnight, kiss you every single day, I know 8 years ago you lost your mom, but you walking into P.E. that day, it made my heart stop like I was automatically drawn to you. I’d like to think it was your mom’s way of telling you to fall in love, try something new, but I don’t know. However, I love you, and I asked Jack and your Dad for help picking out the ring, they helped me plan everything out.” You covered your mouth. Knowing Brad asked your Dad and little brother, your two most favorite people in the world - next to Brad - it made your heart hurt knowing that this was the man you were going to marry, you just had to give your answer if you could stop crying. He said, “Now, Y/N Hotchner, I’m asking you the most important question you may have to answer until we have babies. Will you marry me?”
You immediately said, “Yes” and Brad slipped the ring on your finger and kissed you. Others who were on the beach and watching from their hotel condos all started cheering and clapping.
You just smiled and said, “Wow, we’re going to get married.” Brad kissed your head and then you cut him off and said, “I have to call my Dad! I have to call my Dad.”
The photographer told you and Brad to go and we ran to our condo. Walking inside, there were rose petals covering the bed.
Knowing your Dad, you knew he’d be up and most likely still at the office. He answered the facetime call and said, “Hi Honey, what’s going on?”
You slowly lifted up your left hand and with tears in your eyes, you saw your dad’s eyes go glassy right away. You just whispered, “I’m engaged Dad, I’m going to get married!”
He wiped his cheek before you could see the tear drop from his eyes and he smiled while saying, “Y/N/N, that’s great. I’m so happy for you. He’s a good man.”
You could tell your Dad was upset, realizing that his baby girl was growing up, you told him, “The strongest bond, remember?” He just nodded and whispered, “The Strongest Bond.”
Now that you were engaged, he knew it was only a matter of time before you started talking about building a house, all the details that go into a wedding, and then settling down and having kids. Especially with Haley gone, he had to take over, Jack was only 11, he couldn’t help with planning.
A few months later, you were getting dressed for your wedding. You knew everything would be perfect: Rossi’s backyard, going to be surrounded by your closest family and friends. JJ helped get your wedding dress on and you said, “JJ, can you get my Dad please. And tell everyone we’re ready.” She nodded and whispered, “You look gorgeous.”
You were standing and your Dad knocked. You told him to come in and he opened the door.
As soon as he took one look at you, he started smiling and was getting teary eyed. He whispered, “You look so beautiful, Brad’s one lucky guy.” He kissed your forehead and wiped your tears.
He whispered, “You ready to get married?” You slowly nodded and you wrapped your arm into his. Your Dad had walked you down the aisle and as the wedding proceeded, you, your Dad, and Brad were all emotional.
When it was time for the daddy/daughter dance, you knew that your dad would tear up. Being a profiler, you knew he always had a poker face, but with his two children, he had a soft spot for you and your brother.
Growing up, your favorite Disney movie was Beauty and the Beast. You always insisted your Dad and you danced to Beauty and the Beast, so of course, you promised yourself you’d surprise him and dance with him to the song at the wedding.
Now, here you were getting announced by Rossi for the Daddy/Daughter dance, and when your song started playing, you two started slow dancing. He, of course, was a little teary eyed, whispereing how proud he was of you. You told him that even though you’re now married, you two would still have the strongest father/daughter bond anyone else could have, and with that, the song ended and he kissed your cheek.
Your wedding day couldn’t have been any better, amazing food, awesome music, and amazing people to celebrate with.
After a few more months, you walked into the BAU and the team said, “Y/N! Brad’s getting dinner for everyone.”
They hugged you and you asked, “I’m assuming my dad is in his office?” While they all nodded, you made your way into his office.
He looked up and said, “Hey! What are you doing here?”
He got up from his desk and came and hugged me. You gave him a gift and he said, “What’s this for?” You looked at him and told him to open it.
He opened it and his eyes went wide. He pulled out a little onesie that said, “Junior Agent Mongomery.” He whispered, “You’re pregnant?” You nodded and started crying. He stood up and came to hug me and kissed your forehead. He whispered, “Congratulations.”
You said, “Congratulations to you Papa.”
He looked at me and he said, “Wow, a grandbaby. Can I have a picture of the ultrasound, I want to carry it in my wallet.”
You dug into your bag and gave him the ultrasound photo. He started looking and he whispered, “There’s not one baby in there, honey.” You looked at him and smiled.
Then when your twin sons were born, you couldn’t wait for your Dad to meet them. When your Dad and Jack walked into the hospital room, your Dad immediately got teary eyed while holding them. Little did you know, your children would have the strongest bond with your Dad, just as strong as you had.

Blake Shelton was worried about the headline.
Following the first 10 songs of his final "Friends & Heroes" tour stop at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee Saturday, Shelton stepped offstage, and country music veteran John Anderson emerged from below it. There was an instant surge of energy from the near-capacity crowd, as Anderson, with Shelton's seven-piece backing band, crooned through a soft "Seminole Wind," followed by a boisterous "Money in the Bank" and the boot-scootin' "Swingin'," all huge country hits in the '80s and '90s.
And Shelton, half-jokingly, was just a touch jealous.
"Why do you all act so different for John Anderson?" Shelton asked. "I've been out here for 40 minutes, and all of a sudden John Anderson comes out here and the whole damn crowd … is line-dancing and (expletive). How do you line-dance in your seats?"
"The last thing I need is to wake up tomorrow morning and read the Wisconsin Post or whatever you have here, and the headline says something like 'John Anderson steals the show,'" Shelton continued.
Here at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, we don't take headline suggestions from people we're writing about. But that wouldn't have been an appropriate headline anyway — because Anderson wasn't the only one to steal the spotlight from Shelton.
And that's the beauty of the concept of Shelton's "Friends & Heroes" tour, which has been around for a few years but stopped in Milwaukee for the first time Saturday.
It gives Shelton a chance to share his sharp band and packed houses with veteran country stars who prove they've still got the goods, and are still beloved.
On Saturday, that included Martina McBride, who with her sparkling voice, brightened the night with the self-assuring gems "My Baby Loves Me" and "This One's for the Girls," before closing out with the shattering, and soaring, "A Broken Wing."
And the show also included Tracy Byrd, who actually got the strongest reaction of the three "Friends & Heroes" Saturday. He took full advantage of the runway, tipping his black cowboy hat and high-fiving any fans he could reach, hyping up the crowd with his magnetic stage presence and '90s and early-aughts party-starters "Ten Rounds With Jose Cuervo," "I'm From the Country" and "Watermelon Crawl."
"Over and over again tonight, I have had my ass handed to me by these other singers coming," Shelton said near the show's end.
Shelton was, of course, selling himself short.
While the three guests were indisputable highlights Saturday, they performed for only 10 minutes each. Shelton, on the other hand, was on stage for the show's remaining two hours and 30 minutes, striving to fulfill an early evening promise to play "the longest country concert." (Eric Church routinely does three-hour sets, but this was an impressive marathon nonetheless.)
With the charm and charisma that's made him such a winning personality on NBC's "The Voice" for 21 seasons, Shelton handily slipped into various personas Saturday night, for the raucous "Boys 'Round Here," the moon-eyed duet "Nobody But You" (which he sang facing footage of his new wife Gwen Stefani singing back to him), or the outlaw-flavored "God's Country" and the George Jones classic "Ol' Red."
There were plenty of fun interactions with the crowd, too. Locking eyes with a guy in the front row for the love ballad "Sure Be Cool If You Did," Shelton chuckled mid-song, telling him, "Sing to her, not to me," gesturing to the man's date. And for "Hillbilly Bone," Shelton let himself get upstaged yet again, this time for a fiery duel between guitarist Beau Tackett and fiddle player Jenee Fleenor, the first woman to win the CMA Award for musician of the year.
Shelton was happy to share the spotlight, but after the performance, he feigned a bruised ego, and for the night's greatest moment, invited Anderson, Byrd and McBride to join him for a songwriter's circle session to see which of them had the greatest country song. (He also suggested George Strait, Garth Brooks, Luke Bryan and Luke Combs were going to be the judges … although they were going to stay backstage.)
"How many of y'all think if this was the 'Who talks the most (expletive) of the Friends & Heroes' tour competition, we'd already have our winner?" Byrd said, gesturing to Shelton, another case of the headliner being upstaged Saturday, for funniest line of the night.
Shelton did his rendition of "Who Are You When I'm Not Looking" solo on acoustic guitar, suggesting the lines "When you undress, do you leave a path/Then sink to your nose in a bubble bath" were about Anderson.
After the performance, Shelton did a little moonwalk victory dance, then playfully suggested they end the competition. But Byrd wouldn't have it, sparking a big singalong for a beaming "The Keeper of the Stars," followed by Anderson performing "Straight Tequila Night" (both with support from Shelton's band members). But it was clear, from fans and musicians alike, that McBride won this little competition with "Independence Day."
As they all left the stage, Shelton put an end to the jealousy act, saying some kind words about how much those three musicians inspired Shelton as he made his own ascent in the country music world.
"Those are Hall of Famers … you're never going to see something like that ever again," Shelton said. "My heroes, man, your heroes, man. Those are country music icons, all of them."
And Saturday's show suggested there was one headline Shelton will wake up to one day: "Blake Shelton inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame

My great-cousin Vanessa was recently diagnosed with an extremely rare form of uterine cancer. It’s unfortunately already at stage 4 and oncologists told her that the cancer is so rare they still don’t know much about it, so they’re going to put her through multiple intense rounds of the strongest chemo drugs that exist. MD Anderson in Houston has accepted her so she will be having treatments there, but Houston is 5 hours away from where she lives, so travel and lodgings will be frequent and costly.
She is a single mother of 2 boys and will likely not be able to work during these treatments due to being so ill from the chemo. She’s an incredibly kind soul but has been devastated over this diagnosis. She was still recovering from the emotional toll of taking care of and losing her mother to pancreatic cancer recently, too. She’s already been through so much and it just pains me to think of what she’s going through. Please share this. If you want to donate, please do, but if you can’t we understand completely. Please keep her in your prayers if you are a person of prayer also. Thank you so much❤️
