April 28, 2024: The Mother’s Loathing of Balloons, A.E. Stallings
The Mother’s Loathing of Balloons A.E. Stallings I hate you, How the children plead At first sight—
I want, I need, I hate how nearly Always I
At first say no, And then comply. (Soon, soon
They will grow bored Clutching your Umbilical cord)—
Over the moon, Lighter-than-air, Should you come home,
They’d cease to care— Who tugs you through The front door
On a leash, won’t want you Anymore And will forget you
On the ceiling— Admittedly, A giddy feeling—
Later to find you, Puckered, small, Crouching low
Against the wall. O thin-of-skin And fit to burst,
You break for her Who wants you worst. Your forebear was
The sack of the winds, The boon that gives And then rescinds,
Containing nothing But the force That blows everyone
Off course. Once possessed, Your one chore done,
You float like happiness To the sun, Untethered afternoon,
Unkind, Marooning all You’ve left behind:
Their tinfoil tears, Their plastic cries, Their wheedling
And moot goodbyes, You shrug them off— You do not heed—
O loose bloom                With no root                                  No seed.

In February, a dermatologist in New York City contacted the state’s health department about two female patients, ages 28 and 47, who were not related but suffered from the same troubling problem. They had ringworm, a scaly, crusty, disfiguring rash covering large portions of their bodies. Ringworm sounds like a parasite, but it is caused by a fungus—and in both cases, the fungus was a species that had never been recorded in the US. It was also severely drug-resistant, requiring treatment with several types of antifungals for weeks. There was no indication where the patients might have acquired the infections; the older woman had visited Bangladesh the previous summer, but the younger one, who was pregnant and hadn’t traveled, must have picked it up in the city.
That seemed alarming—but in one of the largest and most mobile cities on the planet, weird medical things happen. The state reported the cases to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the New York doctors and some CDC staff wrote up an account for the CDC’s weekly journal.
Then, in March, some of those same CDC investigators reported that a fungus they had been tracking—Candida auris, an extremely drug-resistant yeast that invades health care facilities and kills two-thirds of the people infected with it—had risen to more than 10,000 cases since it was identified in the US in 2016, tripling in just two years. In April, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services rushed to investigate cases of a fungal infection called blastomycosis centered on a paper mill, an outbreak that would grow to 118 people, the largest ever recorded. And in May, US and Mexican health authorities jointly rang an alarm over cases of meningitis, caused by the fungus Fusarium solani, which seemed to have spread to more than 150 clinic patients via contaminated anesthesia products. By mid-August, 12 people had died.
All of those outbreaks are different: in size, in pathogen, in location, and the people they affected. But what links them is that they were all caused by fungi—and to the small cadre of researchers who keep track of such things, that is worrisome. The experts share a sense, supported by incomplete data but also backed by hunch, that serious fungal infections are occurring more frequently, affecting more people, and also are becoming harder to treat.
“We don’t have good surveillance for fungal infections,” admits Tom Chiller, an infectious disease physician and chief of the CDC’s mycotic diseases branch. “So it’s hard to give a fully data-driven answer. But the feeling is definitely that there is an increase.”
The question is: Why? There may be multiple answers. More people are living longer with chronic illnesses, and their impaired immune systems make them vulnerable. But the problem isn’t only that fungal illnesses are more frequent; it is also that new pathogens are emerging and existing ones are claiming new territory. When experts try to imagine what could exert such widespread influence, they land on the possibility that the problem is climate change.
Fungi live in the environment; they affect us when they encounter us, but for many, their original homes are vegetation, decaying plant matter, and dirt. “Speculative as it is, it's entirely possible that if you have an environmental organism with a very specific ecological niche, out there in the world, you only need a very small change in the surface temperature or the air temperature to alter its niche and allow it to proliferate,” says Neil Stone, a physician and fungal infections lead at University College London Hospitals. “And it's that plausibility, and the lack of any alternative explanation, which makes it believable as a hypothesis.”
For this argument, C. auris is the leading piece of evidence. The rogue yeast was first identified in 2009 in a single patient in Japan, but within just a few years, it bloomed on several continents. Genetic analyses showed the organism had not spread from one continent to others, but emerged simultaneously on each. It also behaved strikingly differently from most yeasts, gaining the abilities to pass from person to person and to thrive on cool inorganic surfaces such as plastic and metal—while collecting an array of resistance factors that protect it from almost all antifungal drugs.
Arturo Casadevall, a physician and chair of molecular microbiology and immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, proposed more than a decade ago that the rise of mammals over dinosaurs was propelled by an inherent protection: Internally, we’re too hot. Most fungi flourish at 30 degrees Celsius or less, while our body temperature hovers between 36 and 37 degrees Celsius. (That’s from 96.8 to the familiar 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit.) So when an asteroid smashed into the Earth 65 million years ago, throwing up a cloud of pulverized vegetation and soil and the fungi those would have contained, the Earth’s dominant reptiles were vulnerable, but early mammals were not.
But Casadevall warned of a corollary possibility: If fungi increased their thermotolerance, learning to live at higher temperatures as the climate warms, mammals could lose that built-in protection—and he proposed that the weird success of C. auris might indicate it is the first fungal pathogen whose adaptation to warmth allowed it to find a new niche.
In the 14 years since it was first spotted, C. auris has invaded health care in dozens of countries. But in that time, other fungal infections have also surged. At the height of the Covid pandemic, India experienced tens of thousands of cases of mucormycosis, commonly called “black fungus,” which ate away at the faces and airways of people made vulnerable by having diabetes or taking steroids. In California, diagnosis of coccidioidomycosis (also called Valley fever) rose 800 percent between 2000 and 2018. And new species are affecting humans for the first time. In 2018, a team of researchers from the US and Canada identified four people, two from each country, who had been infected by a newly identified genus, Emergomyces. Two of the four died. (The fungus got its name because it is “emerging” into the human world.) Subsequently, a multinational team identified five species in that newly-named genus that are causing infections all over the world, most severely in Africa.
Fungi are on the move. Last April, a research group from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis examined the expected geographic range in the US of what are usually called the “endemic fungi,” ones that flourish only within specific areas. Those are Valley fever in the dry Southwestern US; histoplasmosis in the damp Ohio River valley; and blastomycosis, with a range that stretched from the Great Lakes down the Mississippi to New Orleans, and as far east as the Virginia coast. Using Medicare data from more than 45 million seniors who sought health care between 2007 and 2016, the group discovered that the historically documented range of these fungi is wildly out of step with where they are actually causing infections now. Histoplasmosis, they found, had been diagnosed in at least one county in 94 percent of US states; blastomycosis, in 78 percent; and Valley fever in 69 percent.
That represents an extension of range so vast that it challenges the meaning of endemic—to the point that Patrick Mazi, an assistant professor of medicine and first author on the paper, urges clinicians to cease thinking of fungal infections as geographically determined, and focus on symptoms instead. “Let’s acknowledge that everything is dynamic and changing,” he says. “We should recognize that for the sake of our patients.”
Without taking detailed histories from those millions of patients, it can’t be proven where their infections originated. They could have been exposed within the fungi’s historic home ranges and then traveled; one analysis has correlated the occurrence of Valley fever in the upper Midwest with “snowbird” winter migration to the Southwest. But there is plenty of evidence for fungal pathogens moving to new areas, via animals and bats, and on winds and wildfire smoke as well.
However fungi are relocating, they appear to be adapting to their new homes, and changes in temperature and precipitation patterns may be part of that. Ten years ago, CDC and state investigators found people in eastern Washington state infected with Valley fever, and proved they had acquired it not while traveling, but locally—in a place long considered too cold and dry for that fungus to survive. A group based primarily at UC Berkeley has demonstrated that transmission of Valley fever in California is intimately linked to weather there—and that the growing pattern of extreme drought interrupted by erratic precipitation is increasing the disease’s spread. And other researchers have identified cases of a novel blastomycosis in Saskatchewan and Alberta, pushing the map of where that infection occurs further north and west.
The impact of climate change on complex phenomena is notoriously hard to prove—but researchers can now add some evidence to back up their intuition that fungi are adapting. In January, researchers at Duke University reported that when they raised the lab temperatures in which they were growing the pathogenic fungus Cryptococcus deneoformans—the cause of a quarter-million cases of meningitis each year—the fungus’s rate of mutation revved into overdrive. That activated mobile elements in the fungus’s genome, known as transposons, allowing them to move around within its DNA and affect how its genes are regulated. The rate of mutation was five times higher in fungi raised at human body temperature than at an incubator temperature of 30 degrees Celsius—and when the investigators infected mice with the transformed fungi, the rate of mutation sped up even more.
Researchers who are paying attention to rising fungal problems make a final point about them: We’re not seeing more cases because we’ve gotten better at finding them. Tests and devices to detect fungi, especially within patients, haven’t undergone a sudden improvement. In fact, achieving better diagnostics was top of a list published by the World Health Organization last fall when it drew up its first ranking of “priority fungal pathogens” in hopes of guiding research.
Multiple studies have shown that patients can wait two to seven weeks to get an accurate diagnosis, even when they are infected with fungi endemic to where they live, which ought to be familiar to local physicians. So understanding that fungi are changing their behavior is really an opportunity to identify how many more people might be in danger than previously thought—and to get out in front of that risk. “Patients are being diagnosed out of traditional areas, and we are missing them,” Mazi says. “All of these are opportunities to achieve better outcomes.”

Thelreads, MHA 279, Replies Part 1
“And the first trap is set, quicksan- I mean, quickmud to try to slow that mountain down. hopefully it will work.
hopefully.”- Ironically, despite Machia’s normal ability to ‘swim’ through land easily, this actually turns out to be the greatest trap against him, thanks to him having the additional handicap of needing to protect lives rather than destroy them for once, meaning he can’t submerge his back underground without risking the league and has to keep himself on a level surface with extra effort. Much as the League chip in to trip up his antagonisers, they’re a massive weakness for Machia at the moment that prevents him from fighting as freely as he otherwise could 2) “You know what that means… that was a high-oxygen flame source, or they are burning copper, chloride and butane. God knows what those maniacs are welding up there.”- If “High-Oxygen” means “full of hot air”, then I’d say that describes Dabi to a T, both literally and metaphorically. For all he’ll spout off long-winded monologues to buy enough time for a cooldown, the actual substance of what he’s saying is empty and meaningless if given proper scrutiny – it’s just there to tear at his opponent’s weaknesses and vulnerabilities, without actually being anything Dabi himself truly believes in. You can see his insincere double-standard with how he sounded upset at Twice’s death, but had that big- o’l grin on his face in actuality, putting up a performance that couldn’t really hide how he felt inside at witnessing Hawks’ mental anguish over what he’d had to do. 3) “Also, it is suspicious that I haven’t seen Hagakure getting ready to face Gigantomachia… I think she may be planning something, she probably is going to give away their position.”- She’s incredibly fluent in sign language, you know. She’ll probably signal to Machia through waving her arms at a distance. 4) “Only 30? for someone of his size and constitution? I want to see those calculations, because either you’re severely low-balling the amount, or this is a strong-as-fuck sedative, the sort that could’ve stopped a gorilla quickly and prevented May 28, 2016.”- (Looks at Momo dropping the backup explosives)….don’t make a joke about her dynamite chest, don’t make a joke about her dynamite chest, don’t make a- 5) “I mean, there’s also the fact his skin is likely harder than stone? That’s also a point to consider… but yeah, oral, I thought we would try nasal, but I don’t remember which kind acts faster, plus that a gas would expose the students as well and wouldn’t be as easy to give”-  Even if a prime All Might could make Machia stagger a bit with a punch, I’m uncertain if he could actually break his rocky exterior. He’s shake about his insides with the blunt force, but I think it would take multiple full-power hits to actually pierce through and make him bleed- and as far as we know, there’s no technology in the world fully capable of yet reaching the insane level of force OFA had granted All Might by his heyday. Certainly none available to the kids right now, even with Momo in their corner. 6) “okay jesus momo that is not an anesthetic then, that shit is pretty much poison”- (Looks at Machia bearing down on them)…I honestly doubt anybody would blame the kids for going overboard with the dosage and potentially lethally poisoning this guy in the line of duty. Frankly, I think it’d have to be that strong just to maybe affect him, and may possibly even need every kid to chuck their vials into his mouth all together, not just a single dose. 7) “walking mountain goes nyooon~
Hang in there Mt. Lady, your death is still coming, we still need a student to talk about you as well.”-  It’s honestly quite terrifying that, even with her best effort and Machia never having been saddled with this kind of obstacle before, it’s hard to tell if she’s even remotely succeeded in slowing his charge at all. 8) “I think if he loosens his grip even i tiny fraction you two are gonna be yanked the fuck out by the earth itself. Better not risk it Mt. lady.”- Well, he had to let go, otherwise they’d have both been drowned by the earth instead. 9) “Gigantomachia is Gigantamagone now suckers”-  Oh yes, gone….straight downwards that is, and for once, not of his own volition. 10) “HA HA! YOU FELL INTO THEIR TRAP, YOU FOOL! YOU BUFFOON!
Now open wide, here comes the airplane~ “- Machia’s due for his daily medicine, and the doctors are really insistent about him taking them regularly. 11) “Aw- look at that, he is so sad he sank into the mud ): “- Machia only wants to be helpful to others….shame it’s to a psychotic villain who wants to destroy the world, and Machia only wants to be helpful to him alone, otherwise it’d almost be admirable. 12) “Now Machia, be a good boy and say Aaahhhh~
wait what happened to Mt. Lady and kamui? Did they sank as well? Holy shit I wasn’t expecting them to die so gruesomely.”-  Mt Lady almost certainly spent a few seconds removing Kamui from the Quagmire they were both sucked into and making sure he was alive and breathing before trying to ride the Machia, hence why the kids have to try and deal with him solo for that brief window. 13) “Don’t be like that Machia, just eat this and you can get ice cream later, alright?”- “A spoonful of sugar makes the sedatives go down…” 14) “Your prospects are already slim ya dingus, if he manages to get up they stop approaching zero and actually reach it is what you mean.”- At this point, their odds are so low they it’s a matter of perspective whether they actually still exist or not, but if the kids think they’ve got a chance, then they’re going for it, the suicidal rascals. @thelreads

2013 • traumatizing breakup, bounce back after discovering Markiplier's content
2014 • diagnosed with ADHD, actively freelancing
2015 • pretty good year overall...
2016 • dad diagnosed with Leukemia (AML) in May & almost died from splenic rupture - are air lifted to another hospital & I stay with him until July, living in the cancer ICU waiting room
2017 • stopped freelancing, mental health gets bad - dad had stroke, seizures, partially blind, muscle atrophy, cancer is only briefly in remission
2018 • I get a part time job at grocery store, have daily panic attacks & develop POTS, become mostly bedridden - dad's cancer is deemed terminal
2019 • dad died on Dec 12, at 10:40~10:45pm, I was home alone when it happened. the memory is burned into my brain permanently. I have PTSD.
2020 • have panic attacks & break downs at work, pandemic is brewing in Jan, quit my job in Feb, had another very traumatic breakup, then realize I can't draw anymore... but am able to get out of bed more & spend the summer hiking A LOT...but get COVID-19 in Nov, was sick for 28 days (mom was sick for 2 mos)
2021 • start exposure therapy for my drawing problems, (negative conditioning by trauma while in hospital with dad,) not much hiking anymore, lose a friend, finally find a medication that relieves my chronic anxiety, but long-covid sets in
2022 • I've become pretty much a total sedentary shut-in with declining health. had to go on Medicaid. spent the entire year trying to get a new therapist. long-covid is making POTS worse. nightmares about my dad being sick. multiple mental health crises to the point of feeling suicidal. yet...gradually able to draw again, though literally every aspect of my recovery has been improving at a snails pace. still spending most of my time in bed... trying to figure out how to move on with my life...
that's not everything, but I don't feel like going into too much detail because like I said, I've literally got nightmares. so hey. twitters dying. I'm back. 🫥

Craig McCracken - further research
His Career and Work
In 1993, Craig was recruited by Hanna-Barbera Cartoons (now Cartoon Network Studios) to work as an art director on the series 2 Stupid Dogs, but as his first job in the animation industry, he was never really happy with how that show worked.
While McCracken was working at Hanna-Barbera, studio president Fred Seibert started a brand new project: an animation incubator with 48 brand new cartoons that are each about seven minutes long. What a Cartoon!, as it was known, inspired McCracken to continue working on his Whoopass Girls! idea from his work at CalArts. He recalled that the network could not market a show with the word "ass" in it, so two of his friends came up with name ‘The Powerpuff Girls’ as a substitute for the original title.
As a backstory note how it all started, in June 1991, McCracken was in his first year in the character animation program of CalArts and drew three girls with large eyes, visually inspired by the paintings of Margaret Keane on a small sheet of orange construction paper as a birthday card design for his brother.
His new work with a refined plot, "The Powerpuff Girls in: Meat Fuzzy Lumkins", premiered on February 20, 1995, on Cartoon Network's World Premiere Toons, along with its follow-up, "Crime 101", which aired on January 28, 1996. The first short to be picked up by the network was Tartakovsky's Dexter's Laboratory, which McCracken contributed to in the early seasons.
The fourth cartoon to greenlit a full series was McCracken's Powerpuff Girls. It premiered as a short in 1995 and debuted on November 18, 1998 as full half-hour episodes that was aired until its final episode on March 25, 2005. The Powerpuff Girls aired on Cartoon Network for six seasons, three specials, and a feature film, with the final episode airing on March 25, 2005. A total of 78 episodes were aired in addition to two shorts, a Christmas special, the film, a tenth anniversary special, and a special episode using CGI technology. Various spin-off media include an anime, three CD soundtracks, a home video collection, comic books, a series of video games, a 2016 reboot series, and an upcoming second reboot, as well as various licensed merchandise.
The series has been nominated for six Emmy Awards, nine Annie Awards, and a Kids' Choice Award during its run.
In 2002, McCracken also directed The Powerpuff Girls Movie, a prequel to his series. Although the film received generally positive reviews, unfortunately it was a box office failure.
Leaving The Powerpuff Girls after four seasons, McCracken focused on his next project; Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. He created this series with his wife Lauren Faust and Mike Moon and it premiered on Cartoon Network with the 90-minute television special "House of Bloo's" on August 13, 2004. The show also won Emmy and Annie awards and ran for six seasons, all directed by McCracken, ending on May 3, 2009.
He became the executive producer of The Cartoonstitute; a brand-new Cartoon Network showcase project, in April 2008. He left Cartoon Network in 2009 after 17 years of employment when the network began to emphasize on live-action and reality shows. In August 2013, he created Wander Over Yonder for Disney Television Animation and Disney Channel. Following the cancellation of Wander Over Yonder, McCracken pitched Disney a new show based on his 2009 comic strip The Kid from Planet Earth. The concept was later dismissed by Disney, and in 2017 he finally departed the company. After presenting his idea to Netflix, Kid Cosmic was selected as the working title. On February 2, 2021, the show made its debut, and it aired till February 3, 2022.
It marks McCracken's return to the superhero genre after The Powerpuff Girls and the first of his original works to include a serialized style. He pitched Netflix with 10 proposals in August 2021, however due to Netflix Animation's huge layoffs, he eventually left in April 2022.
On July 18, 2022, it was revealed that McCracken will make two reboots at Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe of the Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.
McCracken was also awarded the Winsor McCay Award in 2023 for his "unparalleled achievement and exceptional contributions to animation" at the Annie Awards ceremony.

Daredevil Timeline Thoughts
Assuming that Matt and Foggy weren't exaggerating all that much when they told Karen they had been lawyers for a couple of hours, I submit the following two timelines for how this might have happened.
POSSIBLE TIMELINE 1
Late December 2013 – Early January 2014*: Apply to take Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE).
Late March 2014: Takes the MPRE.
April 1, 2014 – April 30, 2014: Apply to take the New York Bar Exam (NYBE).
Late April 2014 or Early May 2014**: Get results from MPRE.
May 5, 2014 – May 16, 2014: Take end of year exams.
May 22, 2014: Attend graduation ceremony from Columbia Law School.
May 22, 2014 – July 28, 2014: Study for NYBE.
July 29, 2014 – July 30, 2014: Take NYBE***
October 28, 2014: Get results from NYBE.
October 31, 2014: Receive Notice of Certification from the Appellate Division, submits application for admission to New York Bar.
November 2014: Has fitness and character interview, mandatory orientation program, and admission ceremony where the oath of office is administrated in open court.
November 2014 – July 2015: Try to convince a bank to give two baby attorneys with no trial experience a business loan to start their own law firm while doing some kind of work in order to pay for things like rent and food.
July 2015****: Events of Daredevil Season 1 begin.
*I could not find exact dates for MPRE except for this year (2023) so I'm guessing based on those dates.
**MPRE typically gives the results about six weeks after taking the exam.
***Consisting of the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), Multistate Performance Test (MPT), and New York law oriented exam consisting of 5 essays questions and 50 multiple choice questions. New York doesn't start using the Universal Bar Exam (UBE) in combination with the NYLC (New York Law Course) and NYLE (New York Law Exam) until 2016.
****MCU and MCU-related stuff are presumed to take place in the same year they aired unless specifically stated otherwise so Daredevil Season 1 took place sometime during 2015. Judging by the weather we see in the first season, I using the month they began filming in New York City which was July.
POSSIBLE TIMELINE 2
April 2014: Apply to participate in the Pro-Bono Scholars Program*
Late July 2014 – Mid-September 2014: Apply to take Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE).
October – November 2014: Accepted into the Program.
November 1, 2014 – November 30, 2014: Applies for New York Bar Exam (NYBE).
Early November 2014: Takes the MPRE.
Mid-December 2014: Gets results from MPRE.
January 2015 – February 23, 2015: Study for bar exam
February 24, 2015 – February 25, 2015: Takes NYBE.
March 1, 2015: Begin Program of combination of pro-bono legal work under supervision of attorney + classwork under supervising Columbia faculty member.
April 27, 2015: Gets results from NYBE.
ca. May 22, 2015**: Complete Program.
June 2015: Receive J.D from Columbia.
June 2015: Receive Notice of Certification from the Appellate Division, submits application for admission to New York Bar.
June 2015: Has fitness and character interview, mandatory orientation program, and admission ceremony where the oath of office is administrated in open court.
July 2015: Get their business loan for Nelson & Murdock.
July 2015: Events of Daredevil Season I begin.
*New program announced in February 2014 by then Chief Justice of New York Jonathan Lippman.
**Program is 12 weeks long, estimate is based on current year estimated dates on Columbia's website.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
Matt would be encouraged to apply for his exams as soon as possible since he has to apply for disability accommodations and that requires some additional forms and documentation.
Doing the Pro-Bono Scholar Programs satisfies the requirement for 50 hours of pro-bono work for admission to the New York Bar that came into effect in January 2015.

FURTHER THOUGHTS
Alternately, Matt and Foggy passed the bar a couple years prior to series and worked for a couple of years at a law firm or as a judge's clerk while they built up a fund / prepared a business plan to convince a bank to give them a business loan*. AND actually learn how to be trial attorneys since law school doesn't teach you that.
*Given that they reference being in debt and how expensive Columbia is, any money Jack left Matt was long gone so they would need a loan to cover their start-up costs.
IN CONCLUSION
Any thoughts?
Probably to be continued since this isn't the only timeline related thing that snares the part of my brain prone to overthinking.

General DeWitt Shy Spain Airport - Memphis, Tennessee
2787 North 2nd Street
Taken directly from Wikipedia with only slight modifications.
General DeWitt Spain Airport began as an idea in 1928 when the Memphis Chamber of Commerce Engineering Committee suggested turning Mud Island into Memphis' Airport. They decided against that location for a main airport and moved Memphis International Airport to its current location in South Memphis. However, the idea apparently did not fade.
In 1959, Memphis Downtown Airport was put into service about where Mud Island Park is today to service the general aviation community. It had the slogan: "You're strictly uptown when you land downtown." A ferry boat took travelers from the Island to the cobblestones, and then it was just a short walk to the offices of Memphis' city center. Private pilots who worked downtown and business travelers had the perfect arrangement. By 1961, 30 planes were landing per day, according to newspaper reports.
*I think this sounds like a lovely way to travel. Memphis International Airport is a sprawling 1960's design monstrosity. I personally would not cry if they tore it down and started over. *
By the mid-1960s, Interstate 40 was scheduled to cross the Island. Airport owners fought the I-40 Bridge, but in August, 1970, the last plane departed the island airport. *I-40 runs from East to West coast across America. The only leg not completed is in Memphis. The planners wanted to run the interstate through the Memphis Zoo, located in Overton Park. The city sued and after a long court battle finally won. As it turns out the I-40 bridge only obstructs a small portion of Mud Island but it would have interfered with airplane traffic*. Quickly the airport authority purchased available land just to the north of the island so downtown commuters could once again have their landing strip back. The following May, Memphis Downtown Airport was replaced by General DeWitt Spain Airport, honoring local war hero General DeWitt Spain who died in 1969. It has been and still is an active general aviation airport.
*This is a cute epilog, the only crash at the airport was a drone.*
On April 11, 2016, General Dewitt Spain Airport suffered its first accident of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle after a Phantom Quadcopter impacted the side of a hangar. No fatalities were reported. The Quadcopter was unregistered and unable to be traced to the operator.
*I found this information on General Spain from his obituary. I've lived in West Tennessee all my life and had no idea who he was. He died in 1969 in Maryland; I was almost 8 so it wouldn't have made my young self's radar. He sounds like quite a guy.*
Dewitt Shy Spain
BIRTH 24 Apr 1919
DEATH 28 Apr 1969 (aged 50) BURIAL Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington County, Virginia
Evening Star, April 29, 1969 Page 20
Brig. Gen. DeWitt S. Spain, 50, deputy chief of staff for plans at the Tactical Air Command Headquarters, Langley Air Force Base, died of cancer yesterday at the Andrews Air Force Base hospital. He was born in Memphis, Tenn., and attended Southwestern University there (now known as Rhodes College) and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
In 1940 he became an aviation cadet and was commissioned a second lieutenant in May of 1941. For four years during World War II he was active in the Asiatic-Pacific theater, finishing as commander of the 15th fighter group.
After the war he was discharged from active duty and returned to Memphis, where he participated in the air National Guard and air reserve programs. Returning to active duty in 1950, he became director of combat operations of the 26th Air Defense Division in New York. *Memphis is a large distribution hub, being situated on the Mississippi River in a middle of the country location. The military also found the city to be a good location for the Naval Air Station in Millington and a large Air National base where the Memphis Belle airplane was on display for many decades.*
Upon graduation in 1961 from the Industrial College of Armed Forces at Fort McNair, Gen. Spain was assigned for a year to the Pentagon's deputy chief of the Air Defense Division, followed by two years on the Pentagon's national Security Council. Assigned in 1963 the USAF headquarters in Wiesbaden, Germany, he served as director of operations and training, until 1966, when he assumed his Langley post, he was attached to the 10th tactical reconnaissance wing of the Royal Air Force at Alcan Barry England.
His decorations include the Legion of Merit with Oak leaf cluster, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart, and a commendation ribbon.
He leaves his wife Joan of Hampton Virginia and a daughter Mrs. James Romanchk of Chanute Air Force Base, Illinois. Services will be held at 3 PM Thursday at Fort Myer Chapel followed by burial with full military honors in Arlington Cemetery. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of donations the American Cancer Society.

KOKIA in flashback - 2019
KOKIA continues her 20th anniversary celebrations in 2019. The DVD release Journey to Me compliments last year's retrospective Bird Watching in that it only covers her performances from the year before, so the anniversary that Bird Watching was leading up to. Her March concerts are fittingly called Graduation, as she graduated from the 20 years before, and looks towards the future.
On April 29, her 21th anniversary and thus the end of her 20th anniversary year, KOKIA releases  ALIVE - The live history -, her first live best-of album, with the limited first edition in an LP-sized jacket (it still has CDs in it, not an LP). For the first time, KOKIA holds a live stream today: her LINE Live, in which she performs and chats about the album ánd her first book, Happii ryoku ('happy power'). It's about child rearing, which KOKIA now has experience with as Leo is turning 3 years old this year. The theme kind of carries over as she also releases her first ever picture book, Mama no daijisan (My life with my precious), with text in both English and Japanese. Finally, she releases her second jazz album, Watching from Above vol. 2, once again featuring Leo on the cover.
KOKIA also brings back her 2016 concert LAYERS, although this time, she brings it over to Shanghai!

By Grace Through Faith
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
One in Christ
11 Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands— 12 remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility 15 by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, 16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. 17 And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. — Ephesians 2 | English Standard Version (ESV) The Holy Bible, English Standard Version. Gorilla Kala Wrestling With A Sheet Gorilla Kala has always been a bit on the "wild side". In this video, she is wrestling her sheet. Afia watched her, she managed to get her hand on a piece of sheet sitting n the steps. When Afia gets up, she flings the sheet in the air but leaves it behind to go inside. I got asked a week ago or so about making an introduction video with the Bristol gorillas. It's still on my mind and I will do that as soon as I got the time. I haven't forgotten! :-) The first Gorilla arrived at Bristol zoo in 8th September 1930 named Alfred. The Zoo itself opened in July 11th 1836! The first gorilla birth was on March 6th 1971. Currently, there are 8 gorillas at the Bristol Zoo. Starting off with Jock the Silverback, he was born on May 31st 1983 at Zoo La Palmyre. He got moved to the Bristol Zoo on the 25.June 2003. His offspring are: Namoki, Komale, Kukena, Afia, Ayana, Hasani and Juni. Kera was born on August 26th 2004 at the Parc Zoológic de Barcelona. She moved to the Bristol zoo on the 08.September.2008. Her offspring is Afia. Afia was born by emergency cesarean section at Bristol Zoo on the 12th of February 2016 after her mother, Kera, showed symptoms of potentially life-threatening pre-eclampsia. She had to be hand-raised. Gorilla Romina took an interest in Afia when the keepers walked past her with Afia on their arms. So Afia was slowly introduced to Romina and in October started bonding with her surrogate mother. Kera did recover after being ill for a while but didn't recognize Afia as her daughter. Romina took over to raise her, but sadly they had to put her to sleep in Aug 2018 because she had an advanced large cancerous mass in her abdomen. Afia by then was part of the group and dad Jock and the other females looked after her. Touni was born on the 12th of December 2007 at the La Vallée des Singes and moved to the Bristol Zoo on the 28.September 2015. Her daughter is Ayana who was born on the 22nd of April 2017. On 22 December 2020, Toni gave birth to the second baby gorilla for Bristol zoo that year during covid lockdown and he was named a combination of his Mother’s and Father's name, Juni. Kala was born on the 11th of December 2010 in Hannover. She's the newest member of the group as she joined on the 16.October 2018. She was pregnant in Sep 2019, but sadly lost the baby. The cause of death is unknown. On August 19th 2020 Kala gave birth to baby Hasani. Unfortunately she couldn’t feed him properly and is being hand-raised by Bristol Zoo staff members. In May 2021 Kera showed interest in Hasani and became the new surrogate mother of the little boy. By the end of 2022 the inner city Bristol zoo is closing and relocating some of their animals like the gorillas to the Wildlife project place which is just outside of Bristol not too far away.
