USS Texas (BB-35): Operation Goalpost, part of Operation Torch
Tumblr media
"When France surrendered to Germany, in June 1940, an unoccupied area of southern France was allowed to have a collaborationist French government, in Vichy, France. The French authority in Algeria and Morocco at the time of the June surrender chose to follow the Vichy government."
A large portion of the French Navy, the Marine Nationale, and the French Army, the Armée de Terre, had been moved to the French colonies in North Africa. To neutralize the threat of these forces possibly being used against the Allies, the US and Britain sent out their militaries to capture or destroy any French assets and occupy the colonies. There were several ports invaded at the same time. Including the famous battle between the incomplete French Battleship Jean Bart and USS Massachusetts (BB-59) at Casablanca, French Morocco.
Tumblr media
USS Texas (BB-35) was the flagship of Task Force 34.8, which consisted of USS Savannah (CL-42), USS Chenango (CVE-28), USS Dallas (DD-199), USS Roe (DD-418), and several other transport ships. Their main objective was to support the US Army 9th Infantry Division, 60th Infantry Regiment's capture of Port Lyautey, as part of Operation Goalpost.
Tumblr media
The objectives of Operation Goalpost were:
Capture the village of Mehdia.
Capture Kashah Mahdiyya, a fortress at the mouth of the Sebou River
Secure an airfield.
Tumblr media
The TF arrived in Port Lyautey in the early morning of November 8, and Texas quickly maneuvered into position to bombard targets. However, the US Army was running under the pre-war tactics and prioritizing the element of surprise, rather than softening up targets beforehand. This tactic was discarded shortly after. The element of surprise had already been lost since the other landings were already ongoing.
All three of her Vought OS2U Kingfishers were launched to provide spotting and support the troops. Some of Texas' AA crews fired at friendly aircraft but luckily none were hit. The officer who wrote the action report, chalked this up to nervousness.

Action reports of November 8. USS Texas was assigned to the northern most landing.
After the troops landed, the Army radioed for Texas to bombard a munitions dump near Port Lyautey. Only turrets no. 2 and 4 were needed to destroy it, firing only 59 rounds. The pilot reported about 20% landed on target. When the Kingfishers returned that evening, one of the planes capsized due to a wing float ripped off when it landed. The pilot and radio operator were rescued unarmed. The pilot reported he had taken AA fire from French forces, likely causing the accident. This plane was not recovered and was instead deliberately sunk with gun fire.
Tumblr media
Action report of November 10.
On November 10, the Army called for fire support to disrupt enemy troop movements. Texas fired from the same two turrets as before, expending 214 rounds from 0843 to 1130, and making a road and the area impassable. The pilot reported the road was littered with wreckage and stalled vehicles. This road was later repaired after hostilities had ended.
During the fire support, one of the Kingfishers noticed a motorcycle with a sidecar leaving at a high speed. Thinking it was a high ranking official, the pilot broke away and strafed the vehicle with it's M1919 Browning machine guns. This caused it to crash in a ditch. The pilot then strafed other vehicles in the area, scattering troops.
Tumblr media
At 1435, the Army radioed requesting aerial support as French tanks and other troops were advancing on their position. The two Kingfishers from Texas were quickly dispatched, along with aircraft from USS Savannah. One of Texas's Kingfishers was armed with a depth charge, AN-MK41, with instantaneous fuses. By the time they got there, the enemy forces were under attack by Savannah's planes and USS Dallas.
Tumblr media
These pilots joined the affray and dropped a depth charge on a tank, making a direct hit. The pilot reported the explosion flipped two other tanks over and left a giant crater in the ground.
On November 11, the Army again called for fire support and Texas quickly made her way to the position. However, by the time she arrived, the French forces had surrendered. In the two days of battle, she fired 272 14" shells and 6 5" shells.
Tumblr media
"When the fighting ceased, a party from TEXAS went ashore to Port Lyautey to clear the harbor of ships the French had sunk to blockade its use. Though French resistance in the area had ceased, German submarines were still active and had sunk several ships. On November 12, submarine activity was reported in the area around Texas and the escort destroyers dropped depth charges. Texas relocated to another area and encountered submarine activity again. She sailed figure eight inside a submarine screen while more depth charges were dropped. On November 15, Texas and the rest of TF 34.8 departed the area and arrived back in Norfolk on the 26th."
Note: there are no surviving photos of Texas during the battle, if there were any. In 1942, the US Navy actively discouraged sailors from taking any kind of photographs.

Description: Fresh out of West Point, John Howard arrived for his first tour in Vietnam in 1965, the first full year of escalation when U.S. troop levels increased to 184,000 from 23,000 the year before. When he returned for a second tour in 1972, troop strength stood at 24,000 and would dwindle to a mere 50 the following year. He thus participated in the very early and very late stages of American military involvement in the Vietnam War. His two tours—one as a platoon commander and member of an elite counterguerrilla force, the second as a senior advisor to the South Vietnamese—provide a fascinating lens through which to view not only one soldier’s experience in Vietnam, but also the country’s. **
Review:   Let me first say that I did enjoy this book - to a degree. That's why it gets 4 stars. But it's important to know that this is not a great book, which with the authors experiences, it really could have been. One of the biggest deficiencies is that he spends more time telling than showing. Good books of this genre give you a first hand view of what happened and what someone experienced. This book is very light on that, especially during his 1965 tour. It gets better with his Korean and Advisor experiences later on, but only just. Instead you get a lot of history of Vietnam, a lot of history of what happened, who went where, what they did. It's all very strategic and 1000 foot level when what this book is supposed to be is very in the weeds at the 1 foot personal experience level. This is a man who participated in a lot of intense operations, worked with incredible people like Foley and Hackworth, and was both a part of ABU and Tiger Recon with the 101st. But you never really get a feel for what it was like to be a member of either. You never get to experience a recon mission, though he was a part of many. You just know that x unit moved to y place, and then this is what happened / this was the outcome.
You get a good overview of the battles, the war, and even a few of the people, but very little else from his time with the 101st.
His time in Korea is a bit better and gives you a good understanding of what happened and some incidents and the people. Also his time as an Advisor is also more personal as well. So maybe it's just a memory thing and things from 72 are easily recalled vs 65.
One thing you'll notice is a lot of ring knocking and naming of generals... so many generals. So just... be prepared for that.
Overall though, a decent book... he needs to work on the tell vs show more than anything. Up next, going to read Foley's Special Men. I always loved Foley's fictional writing, so I have high hopes for his book about his time with Tiger Recon and other units. I have a feeling it's going to be a good compliment to this book.

Léon Choubrac - Advertisement for the serialization of "Germinal" by Emile Zola in the magazine "Gil Blas" on 25 November 1884.
Émile Édouard Charles Antoine Zola (; 2 April 1840 – 29 September 1902) was a French novelist, journalist, playwright, political activist, the best-known practitioner of the literary school of naturalism, and an important contributor to the development of theatrical naturalism. He was a major figure in the political liberalization of France and in the exoneration of the falsely accused and convicted army officer Alfred Dreyfus, which is encapsulated in his renowned newspaper opinion headlined J'Accuse…!  Zola was nominated for the first and second Nobel Prize in Literature in 1901 and 1902.
Germinal is the thirteenth novel in Émile Zola's twenty-volume series Les Rougon-Macquart. Often considered Zola's masterpiece and one of the most significant novels in the French tradition, the novel – an uncompromisingly harsh and realistic story of a coalminers' strike in northern France in the 1860s – has been published and translated in over one hundred countries. It has also inspired five film adaptations and two television productions.
Germinal was written between April 1884 and January 1885. It was first serialized between November 1884 and February 1885 in the periodical Gil Blas, then in March 1885 published as a book.
The title refers to the name of a month of the French Republican Calendar, a spring month. Germen is a Latin word which means "seed"; the novel describes the hope for a better future that seeds amongst the miners. As the final lines of the novel read:
Des hommes poussaient, une armée noire, vengeresse, qui germait lentement dans les sillons, grandissant pour les récoltes du siècle futur, et dont la germination allait faire bientôt éclater la terre. Men were springing forth, a black avenging army, germinating slowly in the furrows, growing towards the harvests of the next century, and their germination would soon overturn the earth. — 1885 translation[
Gil Blas (or Le Gil Blas) was a Parisian literary periodical named for Alain-René Lesage's novel Gil Blas. It was founded by the sculptor Augustin-Alexandre Dumont in November 1879.
Gil Blas serialized novels, such as Émile Zola's Germinal (1884) and L'Œuvre (1885), before they appeared in book form. Numerous Guy de Maupassant short stories debuted in Gil Blas. The journal was also known for its opinionated arts and theatre criticism. Contributors included René Blum, Alexandru Bogdan-Pitești, and Abel Hermant. Théophile Steinlen and Albert Guillaume provided illustrations.
Gil Blas was published regularly until 1914, when there was a short hiatus due to the outbreak of World War I. Afterwards, it was published intermittently until 1938.
In addition to Germinal, Gil Blas serialized the Zola novels L'Argent, Au Bonheur des Dames, and La Joie de vivre.
Gil Blas critic Louis Vauxcelles's phrase "Donatello chez les fauves" ("Donatello among the wild beasts") brought notoriety and attention to the works of Henri Matisse and Les Fauves exhibited at the Salon d'Automne of 1905. Vauxcelles' comment was printed on 17 October 1905[4] and passed into popular usage.

Russia’s Fifth Column – Time: https://time.com/3616934/russias-fifth-column/
Donald Trump says he would encourage Russia to attack Nato allies who pay too little:- The Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/feb/11/donald-trump-says-he-would-encourage-russia-to-attack-nato-countries-who-dont-pay-bills

A French ERC 90 Sagaie during exercises in Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, 1996.
The ERC 90 is one of the French Army's wheeled reconnaissance vehicles, equipped with a GIAT Industries 90mm CN 90 F4 cannon. This is a smoothbore gun able to fire a variety of ammunition, and has been notable for being installed on light platforms. The vehicle's nickname, Sagaie, is a French word for the African Assegai, a type of spear. In keeping with the weapon nickname tradition, an anti-aircraft variant of the vehicle, the ERC 20 Kriss, is named after the French word for a type of Indonesian dagger.

name: Daniel Louis Raphaél Duvernay-Dumond
age: 20
occupation: Prince of South France
sexuality: straight
status: single
current location: Toulouse, France
shipping status: open
Daniel is the youngest of the Legume - Duvernay-Dumond family. He's one minute younger than his twin sister Aurelíe. Daniel grew up to be a very shy but kind boy, he never did anything without his sister. His family considered him a mummy's boy and he never enjoyed the rough education his father wanted to teach them. Hunting, slaughter, wilderness. He hated it all of it. Daniel is a very intelligent young man, the smartest one of the family and he's very charming. Comapred to his brothers, Daniel is the softest one of them. And he never really had a problem with that. While his father had went through a change too while being with his mother, he still had a lot of Gaston inside him. and having a weak son had never been one of his likings.
Without further notice, Gaston decided to send his son off to the Armée de terre where he went through the rough training of a soldat. To his own and his father’s surprise, he became really good, very skilled and one of the best combats they ever had. That not only brought honour to the army but also the royal family. Daniel is very proud of his achievements, though he would’ve chosen a more quiet life for himself.
After serving for years, he returns home to finally study at a university, something that really interests him. French literature.

You play as the loyal dog Spot who you must fight the evil forces inadvertently awakened by your master. Use bones (as a melee weapon or as projectiles) to battle an army of skeletal-looking cats, bunnies, and fish. Dig your way to Lily but don't forget to pick up precious treasures hiding under the ground (it could be useful)!

🇫🇷 An example of a French SGTIA Cavalerie (Cavalry Company Team) that was deployed to Estonia as part of the NATO Battle Group. SGTIAs are combined arms, task organized company-sized units in the French Army formed from different types of units. This example is a textbook example, including a Command & Logistics Platoon, 2 Tank Platoons, 1 Infantry Platoon, 1 Reconnaissance Platoon, 1 Engineer Platoon and an artillery observation element.
Tumblr media
Normally, these elements are pulled from different single-arm regiments from within a brigade. But in this case, the company team was formed from one of France's only combined arms regiments, 5e Régiment de Dragons or 5th Dragoon Regiment.
SGTIAs, or Sous-groupement tactique interarmes, are France's basic deployable unit. They can be grouped with other SGTIAs to form battalion-sized GTIAs, but not always. SGTIAs can form ad hoc combined arms platoons called Détachements interarmes on a temporary basis.
