Request by anon: Can I please request Jennifer Jareau x reader. Reader is sent on an important undercover mission, so when her helicopter 'crashes' in the middle of nowhere and she is stranded on an island for months on end. Jj (her wife) and the team are going out of their way to find her. (Once reader returns from the island, she isn't the same as before she left. Little things scare her, etc.she also leaves the bau)
Summary: You're going on a solo mission with two SWAT members to save victims you don't know are alive in a country you've never been to before while the rest of the team searches for the unsub. JJ, your wife, eagerly waits for your arrival back home... but that never comes.

This is the biggest mission you’ve ever been on while at the BAU. The unsub is kidnapping young women in Florida and taking them to a remote location somewhere in Cuba. Your mission is to go to Cuba and rescue the victims (however many that may be) and bring them back home. You’ll be going with two SWAT members while the rest of the BAU works to hunt the unsub down before he snatches another girl.
Your team profiled that the unsub is in Florida right now based on the airport traffic. You’d given the sketch to all airports in Florida, and one of them stated that someone like that came through not that long ago. It’ll take you an hour to get to Havana where you believe the unsub is holding his victims, and you’re only going on a rescue mission so you don’t need other agents with you. Plus, you’d have two SWAT members with you, so you’ll be okay.
“Someone should go with you,” JJ says as you prepare for the flight.
“Baby, you know we need everyone on the ground here. This unsub is smart. The fewer agents we have trying to get him, he could get away. I’ll be fine.”
JJ bites her lower lip in concern, and you prepare to walk over to her. You reach up and remove her lip from between her teeth. She sighs heavily and looks you in the eyes.
“You know I worry.”
“JJ, my love, I will be okay. I’ll return home with however many hostages in no time. The flight is only an hour.” You pull your wife in for a kiss that will ease her concerns. She always feels better after one of your kisses. “Be strong. I will be okay.”
“Please be careful,” she whispers.
“I always am.”
She and Hotch escorts you to the plane that’s waiting for you where the pilot and the two SWAT members are.
“Remember, get the hostages and leave. We don’t know if this unsub has partners or not. We don’t know what’s happening over there.”
“Hotch, you’re gonna scare my wife,” you chuckle. “I will be fine. Just focus on getting the unsub. He’s here somewhere. I have faith in you.”
“Good luck,” Hotch nods and leaves you and JJ alone.
“Promise me we’re gonna take this weekend off and get a hotel or something.”
“I promise. You can pick whatever place you want. I gotta go. I love you.”
“I love you.”
You kiss her quickly and get on the plane. She waits until the door is closed before returning to Hotch who is in the car. As you said, the flight only takes an hour, and there is no issue with getting there. The Havana Police meet you at the airport and guide you to the location where they suspect the unsub has taken his victims. The run-down warehouse is located in a remote part of town where the only people that come here is to buy fish and make illegal deals for a multitude of things.
You’re the lead agent on this team so you’re responsible for what happens to every single person with you. The Havana Police wait outside while the two SWAT members go in first. They secure the room before allowing you inside, and you hold your gun out in front of you protectively. This place is big so you have to sweep it from left to right and not miss a single room.
There isn’t much artificial light that helps, so you have to rely on the natural light that seeps in through the high windows and cracks from the doors. This place is covered from head to toe with dust since this place hasn’t been used in a while. It used to be a booming warehouse that shipped and stocked high-grade fishing equipment for big ships, but ever since the company bought a bigger place closer to where the ports are, this place got shut down.
The first two rooms are used for storage that is too small to hold victims, and the next two are bone-dry with no furniture or anything inside. There are high shelves with equipment on them lining the middle of the big warehouse that you move through while keeping your ears on alert. Any little noise or movement will have you and the two SWAT members ready to attack.
You reach one of the back rooms that is locked which is weird since no one uses this warehouse anymore. The Havana Police say they’re in the process of emptying this place out but haven’t gotten time to remove everything yet.
“Can you get this open?” you whisper to the SWAT member who has a background in opening locks.
“Easy,” he whispers back.
You and the other SWAT member watch his back while he gets on his knees and works to unlock the door. It takes him only a minute which according to him, that’s his record. The same man grabs the doorknob and waits for your cue before opening it. You burst inside with your gun drawn just in case there is anyone inside that wants to attack you.
Instead of the unsub or a potential partner, there is a young woman in the middle of the room tied to a concrete pole. There are two other women lying on the ground but based on the smell they’re emitting, they’re dead and have been dead for a while. Still, you walk over to them and check for a pulse even though you know it’s pointless. Next, you move to the woman in the middle of the room and use your knife to cut her loose.
“Please help me,” she cries.
“My name is Agent Y/N with the FBI. You’re going to be okay. Your name is Elizabeth, right?”
“Yeah. He killed them,” she sobs. “He just let them die.”
“Okay, come on. Let’s get you home. Are you okay?” She nods, and you help her to her feet and bring her outside where the Havana Police are. “There are two more girls inside who are dead. I need to get her back to the States. My team will coordinate with you in bringing the other two back home so their families can claim them.”
“Of course,” the lead detective says.
To not disturb the plane’s navigation system, you wait until you’re in the air to call Hotch. The two SWAT members are relaxing, Elizabeth is trying to get some sleep, and you’re by yourself in the back. Everyone is waiting in the briefing room for you to call. They caught the unsub when he was trying to get to the harbor with another victim, so all they’re waiting for is for you to return.
“Go ahead, Y/N. You’re on speakerphone with everyone in the room,” Hotch says.
“I got the hostage, Elizabeth. The other two women were dead when I arrived. I told the detective that you’d coordinate with them to bring them home. I would have stayed, but Elizabeth needs a hospital.”
“I understand. We got the unsub. He’s in interrogation right now.”
“I got a hold of Elizabeth’s family. They should be on their way now,” JJ says. “By the time you get back, they’ll be here.”
“Yeah, I kind of figured. Don’t worry, JJ, I will make sure--”
Just like that, the line goes dead.
“Y/N? Are you there?” There is no answer. “What the hell happened?”
“Garcia, can you trace the call?”
Penelope gets on her laptop and tries to pinpoint your location but is unable to. It’s like the signal got lost in the middle of the ocean.
“Sir, I can’t find it.”
“What do you mean you can’t find it?” JJ panics.
“It means she’s in the middle of the ocean and there are no cell towers out there. I can’t pinpoint the location.”
“What the hell happened to her?”
What the hell did happen to you? You have to blink several times to get your vision to focus which is when you finally see the situation for what it is. Fire is all around you like an unwanted guest in your home. You look down and see both SWAT members dead on the ground, you try to look up and see the pilot is impaled on a branch sticking out of the base of the tree, and you look to your left to see Elizabeth still in her seat. However, her head is backward because her neck is broken.
“Oh, God,” you gasp.
Your plane went down. Something went wrong and it crashed into some island in the middle of nowhere. Why are you the only one that’s alive? How the hell are you gonna get home now? You look down and see a big metal shard from the plane stuck in your leg. The only way you’re going to survive is if you get out of this. It’s gonna hurt like hell but you have to do what you have to do.
You’re not that high above ground so you feel confident you can survive the fall to the ground. You unbuckle your seatbelt and fall to the ground on your ass. Pain erupts from the impact site but it’s nothing compared to the pain in your leg. The plane is broken up into dozens of pieces across a vast expanse of the jungle, and the first aid kit is located in one of those pieces.
If you remove the shard now, you can bleed out so you have to make sure you have the first aid kit with you before you do anything. You can’t put any pressure on your leg or else the shard will be forced out by the pressure, so you crawl over to the area where the first aid kit should be. Luck is on your side because you find it easily and you open it to see what you’re working with.
To prevent yourself from bleeding out, you remove one of your shoestrings so you can make a tourniquet. You tighten the shoestring so tight to cut off your blood supply to the area before yanking the shard out. You scream out in pain and reach into the first aid kit with shaky hands. There are needles and stitches since you thought it was a good idea to include those in first aid kits. You’re not the best when it comes to sewing but you try your best to close your wound.
You scream out in pain when the needle makes contact with your skin.
“Garcia, did you find anything?” JJ asks.
Penelope has not stopped looking for you and Hotch is on the phone with the Coast Guard. They might be able to help if they’d seen a plane go crashing down--if that’s what happened.
“I’m trying to find something I can use that--Wait! I found something. Reports are flooding in from a cruise ship that claims it saw a plane go crashing down in flames.”
“Oh, my God,” JJ whispers and lets her tears fall.
“Okay, I’ll be in touch,” Hotch says and hangs up. “Find that plane, Garcia.”
It hurt like a bitch but you managed to sew your skin together to keep your wound closed. Your hands and leg are covered in your blood, but no new blood has seeped out of your wound. Before you wrap the wound in gauze, you need to clean the wound. There isn’t much when it comes to cleaning solutions but there is a small stream of water close to where the plane crashed.
If you couldn’t put weight on your leg before, you certainly can’t do it now. You scoot along the ground over to where the stream is with the gauze in hand. This is a fresh water stream so it doesn’t burn when you clean your leg and wound. Once done, you place the gauze around your leg to prevent bugs and dirt from getting into the wound and infecting it. If you don’t receive medical care soon, you’re scared you’re going to lose your leg.
Who knows when you’re going to get found or if the BAU even knows you’re gone? You were on the phone with them when the plane landed so they must know something happened to you. When are you going to get found? Are you going to get found? What will happen to your leg if you don’t get to a hospital?
The first thing you need to do is find shelter because you’ve already found water to drink, which you take some time to rehydrate. You don’t have the best survival skills when it comes to this kind of stuff, but you do know you need to shelter yourself from the hot sun and the cold nights. Parts of the plane will have to do since you’re not sure how you’re going to build something with a busted leg and have no knowledge of how to do this.
Fortunately, there is a section of the plane that is hollow enough for you to fit comfortably inside. The next thing you need to do is build a fire to keep you warm during the night. Your parents sent you to summer camps when you were younger that taught you how to survive in the wild if you ever needed to, but that was such a long time ago. You used to be an expert at making fires but you haven’t used this skill in such a long time.
You can either use your glasses to magnify the sun to start a fire, use two rocks to create a spark, or rub two pieces of wood together to create enough friction for a fire. Either way, you’re stuck trying to make the fire all day. As long as the sun is still up, you have hope that a fire can be started before nightfall.
The only supplies you have are three guns and a knife Derek gifted to you for Christmas last year. If you want to eat, you’ll have to kill for it before the animals kill you. Besides the fire crackling next to you and the sounds of animals, there are no sounds to give you comfort. There is no doubt that the animals smell your blood and the dead bodies. They will come for you sooner or later, and you pray it’s the latter.
Don’t fall asleep. You’re scared they’ll get you if you fall asleep.
Penelope comes into work extra early to try and find where the plane is. No one got any good sleep knowing you’re out there suffering and JJ refused to sleep without you next to her. She is exhausted when she comes to work but she won’t stop until you’re found.
“Pen, did you find anything?” she yawns and grabs some coffee.
“I might have.” Both she and JJ walk to the briefing room where everyone else is. “So, I found the general area where Y/N could have landed, but it’s not an exact location.”
“That’s good, right?” Spencer asks.
“No. The problem is that there are twenty islands within that vicinity, and I can’t narrow down the list. She’s in the Bahamas.”
For being in the Bahamas, this fucking sucks. You’re in some kind of jungle with no one around you for hundreds of miles. Whatever went wrong with the plane, you don’t think you were meant to be a survivor. It could have been a mechanical failure, the pilot could have done this on purpose, or someone could have shot you out of the sky. Without your team here, you’re not sure how you crash-landed.
Your leg isn’t doing any better because it’s throbbing, and even through the bandages you can see how infected it is. You’re trying to wash it out with water every so often to keep it clean but it’s hard, and the first aid kit isn’t helping much anymore. You’re starving since you haven't eaten anything since before you left Florida. You haven’t had the heart to kill anything because you hate killing live animals. JJ often makes fun of you for not being able to kill a fly so it’s heartbreaking knowing you’ll have to kill an animal for food.
How long will you be able to live like this before you succumb to the sweet relief of death?
The first two islands that the BAU searched were a bust. They started with the smallest ones in hopes you’ll be there but nothing came up. It took a couple of days per island to search and the longer you go unfound, the more JJ’s heart breaks.
Days turned to weeks that turned to months, and you’re not sure if you’re ever going to go home. You’re lying on the ground in silence except for the animals who have definitely gotten closer to you. They’re eating through the dead bodies and will eventually make their way to you. You don’t have enough bullets to protect yourself with, but maybe you can make it another week.
At least the stars look pretty.
It takes weeks to scour through the bigger islands with the hope of finding you alive getting smaller and smaller. Half of the team believes you’re dead while the other half are starting to think that. JJ flat-out refuses to believe you’re gone until she sees a body. The only reason they’re still looking for you and wasting resources is that you’d do the same for them if they were lost. You’re part of their family and they need to find you dead or alive at this point.
Eventually, they reach one of the biggest islands in that group of twenty. They only have a few more islands to go through so if they don’t find you within those, there’s no telling where you can be.
“Y/N!” JJ yells as she treks through the dense forest. The rest of the team is behind her looking and calling out for you as well. There is a helicopter above you to get some aerial views of the islands. They walk a mile further into the island when they see the first sign that you’re here: part of the plane. “Guys! Look! Y/N!!”
You’re lying on the ground in so much pain from your leg and from your stomach. You’ve eaten very little since the crash so you’ve lost a lot of weight which means you’re so tired. You don’t have any bullets anymore to protect yourself but what’s the point if you’re going to die here anyway? You close your eyes to get some sleep when you hear your name being faintly called.
Are you hallucinating? This isn’t the first time you thought you heard your wife calling for you. Maybe this has been a really bad dream and you’re at home in bed with JJ. Your leg isn’t as bad as you thought it was going to be but it’s very red and oozing pus even through the gauze.
“Y/N!”
“I’m here,” you mutter weakly. The team follows the plane parts to where the main crash is and where you are. JJ gasps and runs over to you to make sure you’re alive. “You found me.”
“I’m right here. Oh, my God! Guys! I found her!” JJ cries.
Derek and Emily join JJ’s side to help you while the rest checks on the others even though it’s pretty clear they’re dead.
“They’ve been dead for months,” you groan as they help you sit up. “I’m so happy to see you guys.”
Hotch takes out his phone to contact the people in the helicopters.
“We found her. We need a medic down here.”
“You don’t have to worry anymore. You’re gonna be okay,” JJ promises.
You’re taken to the States immediately with JJ and Hotch in the helicopter with you while the others stay behind to get the dead bodies back to their families and to figure out why the plane went down. You’re taken into surgery as soon as you get to the hospital which lasted more than twenty-four hours. They saved your leg but you’re going to have to endure physical therapy for months to get you back to how you were walking before, and you might not even get there.
Still, you’d take this over dying alone any day.
You’re severely malnourished so you’re hooked up to IVs to give you the nutrients you’ve lacked for months.
“JJ?” you whisper.
She is by the window just thinking when she hears your voice. She quickly turns and joins your side by the bed. She takes your hand and kisses the back of it.
“What is it, baby?”
“I’m sorry if I worried you.”
“Don’t. This is not your fault. You have nothing to be sorry for.”
“I tried for months to keep the animals off them, but I guess I wasn’t successful,” you cry. JJ wants to cry for you knowing what you must have gone through but she doesn’t let them fall. “I’m so hungry.”
“Do you want jello?”
“Yes, please,” you sniffle.
She leaves the room in search of some jello which gives you time to reflect on your future as a person and with the BAU. You’re not so sure you can continue this job because these last two months have changed you in ways you never thought you’d change, and you don’t think it’s for the better.

Swamp Witch’s Guide to Pine Trees
For this post, I will be talking about lore of Pine across cultures, with a focus on my local species here in Florida, the Slash Pine (Pinus elliottii). I highly recommend researching the species native to your area, and forming a relationship with those trees.
Ecology:
Slash Pines are known to grow very tall and quickly, and thrive in the Scrub and Flatwoods. They have an avg. lifespan of about 150 years. They reach up and chase the Sun, and call down Lightning. This Lightning starts Fires that prevent Hardwood Hammock Species from moving in and dominating the scrub effectively protecting the biome. It is an evergreen and a conifer.
Pine as a Healer and Protector:
Pines are a common symbol of pushing through the winter, and its never fading needles remind us of the Sunny days to come. In my experience, Pine can have a very Solar nature when approached in matters of cleansing and healing is a very fiery cleansing energy, swords come to mind. Pine has been burned used in crosses and strung about the home to dispel melancholy it has also been used as medicine by Indigenous People in FL for centuries. This is where I draw my associations Avich healing from. This Solar energy can also cause it to come off a bit posh, but you just have to pay appropriately.
Slash Pine is known for its hard, dense wood. Also, as its role as protector through bringing fires to fend off the encroaching Oaks and Palms, clearly has the virtues of a Fighter and Protector. Once you have established a connection with a few dices, call on them to gaud you or to burn up any hexes with the next fire the call! Burning some needles or bark is also a great way to call the spirit into your space for workings and
communication.
Pine and the Otherworld
Pine being associated with the Otherworld is a mix of UPG and Tradition. In some places, Pines are considered Saturian and Connected to the Dead. Personally, I do consider Pine an Ancestral Ally as my family are Pineros from Isla de Pinos Cuba. I find Pine helps to be an intermediary between a practitioner and Spirits Ancestors and Others. The Seminole and Miccosukee tribes have belief regarding Pine as it relates to some of their Land Spirits. The type of spirit who live in the Pine are called 'Este Lopocke' and are 'little people' similar to the Fair Folk in the mischief and connection to the Plant world. This further shows its quality as an Otherworldly plant.
Offerings T have made to Pine Spirits:
-Tobacco, Loose or burned
-Alcohol, on an altar or sprinked on the plant
-Copper Coins
-Water from a Local River
-Prayer and Song
-Blood, your water
-Devoted and dedicated time
It can't go unsaid when talking about Florida Pines that many people, mainly poor black folks, unjustly lost their lives or became disabled from working in Turpentine plants in the 19th and 20th Centuries. This tragic history is intrinsically linked to the Tree now. You can read some of the recorded folklore from these Florida Turpentine Farms in the book ‘Of Mules and Men’ by Zora Neale Hurston. Pine is a great ally to have in your spiritual court and I love working with it as a protective, cleansing force.

What's your interpretation of Cuba's and America's relationship pre-missle crisis since they were probably on good terms after the Spanish America war
Oh they weren’t on good terms after the Spanish American War bahaha (or to put it another way, it’s complicated)
Carlos and Alfred were definitely aware of each other from a fairly early point in their history. Lots of illegal trade took place between the southern colonies then states and the Cubans, and many of the first advocates for Cuba leaving the Spanish Empire proposed American annexation as the alternative. This was somewhat reciprocated, as the American Founding Fathers frequently kicked around the idea of annexing the US and there were several attempts by the Americans to buy Cuba from Spain, though always turned down. However, there were also voices in the Cuba independence movement who were against US annexation and were heavily critical of any humanitarian reasons the us purported to have in annexing Cuba, most notably José Martí. Additionally, the Cuban exile community in the US played an outsized impact in both the struggle for Cuban independence and Cuban-American ties and many of them would go on to help organize rebellions.
I'm not entirely certain of their personal relationship at this time but I don't really think Carlos lived abroad in the US for an extended period of time. After the loss of the mainland South American colonies (esp Mexico), Cuba became the replacement treasure of the empire and thus, was all the more tightly controlled and ruled. Maybe Alfred and Carlos weren't friends (if anything, Carlos is probably more likely to have closer relationships with the southern United States, especially Florida), but they were probably on amicable terms.
Following the Spanish American war and the several on and off Cuban struggles for independence, Carlos had been put through the wringer after years and years of Spanish crushing of Cuban rebels, and the resulting scrutiny and burden that Cuban civilians had been placed under due to many of them providing support to the rebels. It would be undeniable that Carlos would react to Alfred helping to finally bring the conflict to the end with relief, but I also think he reacted to Alfred's entrance with some bittersweetness- the Cubans had spent three years fighting tooth and nail, and in three weeks, Alfred and the Rough Riders had finished the whole shebang and basically stolen the entire show. This was no longer about the Cubans' long struggle for freedom, this was about America's first step onto the world stage as a global power ⭐
The initial promise of the throwing off of Spanish power and America's rise Carlos saw was soon replaced with the more disappointing reality. The sentiment that only the name of the regime had changed was certainly something he felt, and there was an unmistakable racial lens to the relationship between Alfred, a white passing man, and Carlos, someone visibly not white, and how the former treated the latter. Most of the US regime's dealings were done through the Cuban exile community, US-educated white Cubans already familiar with US culture, and US rule effectively shut out Afro-Cubans from politics. For the black independence fighters who had fought for years for a racially equitable Cuba, this was disappointing, to put it lightly.
The disillusionment was not one sided, as Alfred was likely annoyed at how expensive Carlos was being and how not sufficiently grateful he was for liberating him from Spain. This was only further solidified when American rule was far more short-lived than he expected, as Cubans voted for the independence-minded parties in the subsequent elections. Then when Alfred proceeded to finagle and gaslight his way into justifying why actually, Cuba, still needed him and thus, the creation of the Platt Amendment and consequent strong arming Cuban legislators to adopt that into the constitution. Needless to say, neither were on good terms.

Agent Murphy: So Hinata, I'm going to ask you a few questions, is that okay with you? You could take some time a bit before you answer.
Uh... No that's fine! Really. Just tell me what you want to tell me.
Agent Murphy: You're an easy guy to talk to, I like that. But anyway, let's get to the point. Hinata..., looking back on your activities during the early 2010s and looking at yourself now, what would you tell your son about what you did then?
Flashback sequence

Well... Let's just say that it wasn't really easy. I don't really think anyone can claim the fact that they just ended an era of conflict that went on for a century.
I didn't really expect to be a hero or a legend in my home country. I was just a person who wanted to be special, to feel like I was someone, to have a talent in something. I'm sure many of us can relate to having that feeling. That's why I signed up for Hope's Peak, despite the issues going on.
But... I honestly let that judgment get to me a bit. I didn't know what I was getting into, what I was about to see, what I was about to face, I had no idea how exactly bad things were over there. I suppose that maybe... my son does have a right to know what his dad did during that time, so he can try to learn and not be like me, to live a good and special life that my younger self wished he had.
So I will tell you because this has to be told, to let those know that things like this can never happen again. I just hope that the rest of the world is more calmer now and more safe than it was back then. So buckle up, this is going to get wild. It all started a few months ago...

Runtime: 121 Minutes
Genre: Drama
What's it about?: Diana Nyad is a retired marathon swimmer who decides to go for her life's goal, swimming from Cuba to Florida, with her best friend Bonnie as her coach.
Did you think it was any good?: Yes. So this is a sports movie and it's a biopic, and it follows conventions and tropes from those genres. It's not reinventing the narrative wheel. But this one stands out frankly because it's about two lesbians who are in their 60s and they look and act like it. The relationship between Bonnie Stoll (Jodie Foster) and Diana Nyad (Annette Bening) is the best part of the film, the love and connection between them is palpable throughout the two hours. Jodie Foster really knocked it out of the park with her performance and the rest of the acting was good to okay, with some hammy bits here and there. The special effects were great, the editing and cinematography really shined during the swimming scenes. There's a lot of interspersed footage of real life news clips and interviews throughout; I thought it was fine and probably one of the better instances of that editing choice I've seen, but it can get grating at times. At the end of the day this film is an engaging two hours of lesbian friendship, stubbornness, and athleticism.

saying goodbye to my parents at the airport.
reassuring them that a category 2 wasn't the end of the world. it was holding up a shutter while my brother drilled in the next. buying just enough water, and cooking just enough food. arguing with him two days before landfall whether to stay or go, for a storm shifted to a monster.
taking down the first room i've gotten to decorate since losing our childhood home.
deciding what i needed to leave behind; "just in case".
making the judgement call to not evacuate.
what they don't tell you about that part is: many, many people had no choice.
our highways cornered us before we even knew what was overhead. later, we found out if we had fled, we would have been an eventual rescue in the middle of central florida, with no way home.
no one really prepares you for landfall.
i can't count on my fingers; the amount of times people would tell me we were overreacting. that this wouldn't be "the big one".
ian was going to bed on a tuesday, believing we would wake up to a cat 3 on wednesday.
we lost power on a wednesday morning, our cell towers went down shortly after. we had no idea what was coming. a phone call from my mom broke through. my parents don't cry, and i don't think they have ever sobbed harder. carrying their guilt of not being there with us. thinking they left us behind, almost felt worse than being told something we never anticipated—
—category 4, but you might as well call it a five; unless you’re an insurance company.
nervous laughter at waffle house closing; jim cantore right next door. i didn't think those stories were real. being a spectacle to the world is like being in the eye itself.
i don't wish that on anyone.
intensifying overnight, ian was destined to hit us at at exactly 2 pm, with not one eye wall, but two.
dropping the call meant sitting in the dark, which meant waiting, which meant playing a board game; distracting us from the inevitable.
"sorry" took on a whole new meaning.

the winds whistling into the 100s made us thankful for the shutter we agonized over. did you know that there’s a difference between a whistle versus the sound of a train? dead silence is the opposite of safety.
tornadoes have always scared me.
i found out purgatory is equivalent to 14 hours; 30, if you count the power outage and contaminated water. longer, if you count crying over friends who you didn’t know were safe, hurt, or dead.
i don't like calling us lucky.
it's an ugly truth, and an uncomfortable one.
there isn't any relief in saying we were lucky, because what about the people who got the direct hit?
in fort myers, where the beach no longer exists? in sanibel, where their only way out was severed in half? inland, where they thought they were out of the cone's way? those who fled from tampa to further south, where they were told they would be safer?
why are we forgetting cuba?
a last-minute shift doesn’t mean a last-minute celebration.
the very people in the midst of tragedy, who social media is condemning. there isn’t a joke that can be made to remove that bitter taste.
somehow, the whole country knows better.
what they would do in our position. how to leave. it’s easy, if you try hard enough. why would anyone want to live in the south? you knew this would happen. it's your fault for staying.
what they don't teach you is empathy. both in definition, and in practice. i wish i hadn't looked at my phone.
i'm glad i did.
my brother and i watched ian high-tail out of our area.
he was, and is, the anchor to my drifting ship. never would i have thought we would have to play out the act of putting eachother's lives in eachother’s hands.
i hope to do the same for others.
they don’t tell you about the survivor’s guilt. i guess that's something you learn on your own; but i’m not alone.
we will heal. we will cry. we will recover. we will make it.
that may be easier said than done.

2023 Bahama Cruise, Part 10, March 20.
Lee Stocking Island to Stocking Island.
We lounged around today waiting on the tide to bottom out at 1400. By picking the top or bottom of the tide, “the rage” becomes manageable. If the current opposes the wind and swell, then you have will have a “rage”. The waves stack up very steep. They will go out a 1/2 mile or so. Did we time it right? Stand by for the answer.
Winds today, and most of the time this week, have been “4 clothes pin winds”. Anything less and you are likely to lose your clothes off the life lines.
Called neighbors today, temperatures in the Florida Keys are 64 degrees. We are right at 250 miles East and South. Very comfortable here, water is still a bit chilly for the the first minute you jump in.
While we waited, we removed the dinghy engine then raised the dinghy on its davits. Shortly afterwards, 11 kayakers paddled by. Apparently they were on a 6 day outing around the Exumas from Georgetown or maybe Barretarre.
Our route took us south of Children’s Bay Cove, then between Rat Cay and Pigeon Cay. Then we take a hard left out Rat Cay Cut, between Rat Cay and Boysie Cay. Tide was still in ebb, Nancy helmed us out. You have to respect the current! It can rip at 3-5 kts. and can sweep you on to the rocks.
What name would you give this rock? It is called “Square Rock”, for some reason. Easily seen for miles from offshore.
Boysie Cay to our starboard as we exit Rat Cay Cut. Our timing was great, “no rage”. Honestly, there was no wind blowing in from the Sound. But you always have swells coming in and breaking on shore.
Lots of boat traffic to and from Georgetown town.
Nancy at the helm as we passed “Three Sisters Rocks”.
Sailing instructions listed on the chart have you head for the pink house on the hill. I hope it is listed on the deed to the house, that you can not change the color from pink. Otherwise you will be responsible for lost, grounded and shipwrecked sailors in the bay.
We followed in 4 catamarans, but still closely watched our track.
This is the winter hide out for northerners. The season is winding down, but still around 300 boats in the harbor. When the winds pick up, a couple of boats will start dragging anchor. At night it is a sea of anchor lights.
Winds have been out of the SW all week so 50 boats or so are on the west side of the harbor. Winds are due to shift tonight and then pick up Tuesday night. So all of the boats on the west side will move over today.
We are anchored over sand, in 20 ft. of water with 120 ft. of chain out. Which is deep for us. We usually anchor in 10 ft. of water. Currently it is 0330 and dead calm. Everyone swings on their anchors at different rates due to depth of hulls or windage on the topside. With this much scope out, I just walked the deck checking how close our neighbors are. Things look ok for now, about half way through the wind change.
Water is milky here. Not looking forward to diving the anchor. With all the boat and dinghy traffic here, I will have to take a float or dinghy with me.
This blob of weather is coming directly for us from Cuba.

First images released from NOAA-21 VIIRS instrument Bright blue water in the Caribbean Sea and smog in Northern India appear in the first global image produced with data from NOAA-21's VIIRS instrument. The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument on NOAA-21 began collecting Earth science data on Dec. 5 as the satellite passed over the East Coast of the United States. Data for the global image was collected over a period of 24 hours between Dec. 5 and 6. This came three weeks after NASA launched the NOAA-21 satellite from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on Nov. 10, 2022. The VIIRS instrument—which also flies on the NOAA-20 and the NASA/NOAA Suomi-NPP satellites—provides global measurements of the atmosphere, land, and oceans. It was built by Raytheon Intelligence & Space in El Segundo, California. "VIIRS serves so many disciplines, it's an absolutely critical set of measurements," said Dr. James Gleason, NASA project scientist for the JPSS Flight Project. "VIIRS provides many different data products that are used by scientists in unrelated fields, from agricultural economists trying to do crop forecasts, to air quality scientists forecasting where wildfire smoke will be, to disaster support teams who count night lights to understand the impact of a disaster." Over the oceans, VIIRS measures sea surface temperature, a metric that's important for monitoring hurricane formation. It also measures ocean color, which helps scientists monitor phytoplankton activity, a key indicator of ocean ecology and marine health. "The turquoise color that's visible around Cuba and the Bahamas in the bottom-left image above comes from sediment in the shallow waters around the continental shelf," said NOAA's Dr. Satya Kalluri, Joint Polar Satellite System program scientist. Over land, VIIRS can detect and measure wildfires, droughts and floods, and its data can be used to track the thickness and movement of wildfire smoke. The bottom-right image above shows haze and smog over Northern India that is likely due to agricultural burning. The snow-capped Himalayas and the Tibetan plateau are also visible to the north. One of the unique features of VIIRS is its Day-Night Band, which captures images of lights at night, including city lights, lightning, auroras and lights from ships and fires. And one of its most important uses is imagery over Alaska, Dr. Kalluri said. This is because these satellites, which orbit the Earth from the North pole to the South pole, fly directly over the Arctic several times a day. The instrument also generates critical environmental products on snow and ice cover, clouds, fog, aerosols and dust, and the health of the world's crops. This "first light" image comes two weeks after the first image from the satellite's Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) was released. The satellite, known as JPSS-2 during the build and launch, was officially renamed NOAA-21 after launch, following NOAA's naming conventions for polar orbiting satellites. "We had two VIIRS on orbit, and now we've got three," Dr. Gleason said. "We launch multiple weather satellites to make doubly and now triply sure we always have one going. Space is a dangerous environment. Stuff happens and you can lose an instrument or a satellite, but we cannot lose the data. It's too important, to too many people." Drought in the Great Plains and Midwest is getting more intense, federal report shows
(Yahoo News) A drought in the Great Plains and the Midwest has quickly grown in its size and severity in the last month, according to an update released Wednesday by the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS). Currently, 60% of the North Central U.S. is in “moderate to exceptional drought” with 30% in “severe drought or worse” according to NIDIS, a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The worst-hit areas include Kansas, where 30% of the state is in exceptional drought, and Nebraska, which is 12% in exceptional drought. Smaller parts of Colorado, Missouri and South Dakota are as badly affected. While the entire Midwest has been in a worsening drought for months, the western portions of the region—the Missouri River Basin and the Great Plains—have been hit the hardest. Water has dropped to “record low levels” on the Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio rivers, NIDIS reported, which has impeded boats and shipping.
Hawaii’s Big Island gets warning as huge volcano rumbles
(AP) Hawaii officials are warning residents of the Big Island that the world’s largest active volcano, Mauna Loa, is sending signals that it may erupt. Scientists say an eruption isn’t imminent, but they are on alert because of a recent spike in earthquakes at the volcano’s summit. Experts say it would take just a few hours for lava to reach homes closest to vents on the volcano, which last erupted in 1984. Hawaii’s civil defense agency is holding meetings across the island to educate residents about how to prepare for a possible emergency. They recommend having a ″go″ bag with food, identifying a place to stay once they leave home and making a plan for reuniting with family members. “Not to panic everybody, but they have to be aware of that you live on the slopes of Mauna Loa. There’s a potential for some kind of lava disaster,” said Talmadge Magno, the administrator for Hawaii County Civil Defense.

(Washington Post) For more than a century, millions have flocked to Florida with similar visions to live out their golden years on the beach. The Florida dream exerts a powerful pull: The state consistently ranks among the fastest-growing in the nation. It is forever under construction, with new houses and condos and apartment buildings rising in already-crowded cities. Everyone, it seems, wants a piece of paradise. But Ian, one of the strongest hurricanes ever to hit the United States, upended the idyllic lives so many had planned for themselves in this stretch of the Sunshine State, often pouring in their life’s savings. As Floridians surveyed the damage from the near-Category 5 storm, which killed at least 114 people, some wrestled with painful questions: Should they stay and rebuild? Could they? Florida was already in the throes of a housing crisis; the storm made it worse. Damage estimates reach into the tens of billions, and rebuilding won’t come cheap. Even before Ian, Floridians scrambled to find coverage in the state’s fragile insurance market. Moreover, as climate change makes extreme weather far more common, some question the wisdom of rebuilding on barrier islands and in other delicate coastal areas.

(Washington Post) This Thanksgiving turkey is poised to be a bit more expensive, and for once it’s not due to the supply chain. This one is because of the pandemic, and no, not that one. There’s an avian flu that’s been tearing through the U.S. poultry business, with some 44.6 million birds dying from the virus or being depopulated due to exposure this year. Of those, 6 million were turkeys. The avian flu is on track to be more significant than the 2015 bird flu that claimed 50.5 million birds in the worst animal health event in the history of the U.S.

(AP) When Hurricane Ian tore through western Cuba in late September, causing an island-wide blackout, it left the government grappling with a deepening energy crisis and simmering discontent among Cubans. It also once again thrust the Caribbean island into the middle of an escalating tug-of-war between its seaside neighbor, the United States, and ally, Russia. At a time when Cuba is urging the Biden administration to ease U.S. sanctions that it says stifle hurricane recovery efforts, Russian oil has flooded into the island, providing relief to debilitating blackouts. Russia has shipped an estimated $352 million in oil to Cuba since the start of the Ukraine war, the biggest inflow from Russia this century and enough to cover about 40% of the shortfall in the island’s supplies, according to independent estimates. The sales also potentially alleviated the weight of international sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. “(It leaves them) between a rock and a hard place,” said William LeoGrande, a professor at American University who has tracked Cuba for years. “Cuba can’t afford to alienate either side in what is shaping up to be a new Cold War.”
In Britain’s inflation crisis, healthy diets are a casualty
(Reuters) Fresh vegetables and fish are falling off the menu. Packaged pizzas and processed meat are the dishes of the day. Many British households are turning away from healthier foods as rampant inflation pushes them towards cheaper processed meals, according to consumer data and experts who are worried about the nation taking a nutritional nosedive. Joanne Farrer used to regularly serve her three children roast beef dinners or stews packed with fresh vegetables. Now she’s more likely to give them chicken nuggets and fries or sausages and mashed potatoes, which are “cheaper and filling”. Her monthly welfare payment’s mostly swallowed by rent and the rising cost of gas and electricity. “It doesn’t seem like there’s light at the end of the tunnel,” said the 44-year-old, who does voluntary work for a charity in the city of Portsmouth on England’s south coast. “You think, when’s it going to end? Putin demands U.S. respect ‘multipolar’ world
(Washington Post) In a keynote foreign policy speech, Russian President Vladimir Putin portrayed Russia as a champion of rising nations in a new multipolar world, which he demanded that the United States and other Western powers begin to respect as equals. Seeking common ground with the right-wing in the West, he described Russia as a defender of traditional Christian values as society has lost its way. Despite making the rivalry with the West a cornerstone of his foreign policy and his every day talking points, Putin insisted that Russia does not fundamentally see itself as the enemy of the West but instead opposes the West’s attempts to instill “strange” and “neoliberal” values in other societies in the world. “There are at the very least two Wests,” Putin said. One is the West of “traditional, primarily Christian, values, freedom, patriotism, the richest culture” that Russia is close to. “But there is another West—aggressive, cosmopolitan, neocolonial, the one acting as a tool of the neoliberal elites,” he continued. “And Russia, of course, will never put up with precisely the dictate of this West.”
Russia warns West: We can target your commercial satellites
(Reuters) A senior Russian foreign ministry official said that commercial satellites from the United States and its allies could become legitimate targets for Russia if they were involved in the war in Ukraine. Russia, which in 1957 launched Sputnik 1, the first manmade satellite, into space and in 1961 put the first man in outer space, has a significant offensive space capability—as do the United States and China. In 2021, Russia launched an anti-satellite missile to destroy one of its own satellites. Konstantin Vorontsov, deputy director of the Russian foreign ministry’s department for non-proliferation and arms control, told the United Nations that the United States and its allies were trying to use space to enforce Western dominance. Vorontsov, reading from notes, said the use of Western satellites to aid the Ukrainian war effort was “an extremely dangerous trend”. “Quasi-civilian infrastructure may be a legitimate target for a retaliatory strike,” Vorontsov told the United Nations First Committee, adding that the West’s use of such satellites to support Ukraine was “provocative”.
At least 42 die as storm triggers floods, landslides in Philippines
(AP) Flash floods and landslides set off by torrential rains swamped a southern Philippine province, killing at least 42 people, leaving 16 others missing and trapping some residents on their roofs, officials said Friday. Most of the victims were swept away by rampaging floodwaters and drowned or were hit by debris-filled mudslides in three towns in hard-hit Maguindanao province, said Naguib Sinarimbo, the interior minister for a five-province Muslim autonomous region run by former guerrillas. The unusually intense rains were triggered by Tropical Storm Nalgae, which was expected to slam into the country’s eastern coast from the Pacific Ocean on Saturday, forecasters said.

(WSJ) Egypt and the International Monetary Fund have agreed to an initial deal for a $3 billion loan, officials announced on Thursday. Once approved, it would be the fourth time that Cairo is receiving this type of loan since 2016. Authorities estimate that one-third of Egyptians are currently living in poverty.

(NYT) Following the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the behest of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, President Biden promised to treat the Saudi head of state as a “pariah.” However, the president’s aides saw opportunity in reforging the U.S.’s relationship with Saudi Arabia. They began planning a fun trip to the Middle East. The stops? Israel and Saudi Arabia, where they hoped to get a Saudi guarantee to convince OPEC to increase oil production. Before the trip, Biden’s advisors met with Prince Mohammed, securing a two-part deal with the suspected journalist-killer. First, the Saudis would push a 400,000 barrel per day increase in OPEC oil production, moving up the production bump from the planned September date to July. Next, the Saudis would advocate expanding production by 200,000 barrels per day each month from September to December of 2022. When the oil kingdom met the first part of the deal, Biden announced his trip. After first stopping by Israel, the president headed to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on July 15 to meet Prince Mohammed in person. The two fist-bumped for the cameras and talked behind closed doors, leading U.S. diplomats to believe that the relationship was on the mend. By August, it became clear that this was not the case. Instead of the expected 200,000 barrel per day bump, OPEC only announced a production increase of 100,000 barrels. In September, U.S. officials began hearing rumors that Saudi leaders might push OPEC to actually cut production for October. Despite Prince Mohammed’s assurance that no such cut was coming, on October 5, OPEC announced a decrease of two million barrels per day. Now it looks like the U.S. and the Saudi kingdom are back to square one. The U.S. is now scrambling to deal with the effects on inflation and prices at the pump.
Bees play
(Guardian) Hardworking bumblebees like to play just as much as the rest of us, according to a new study in the Animal Behaviour journal. Researchers found that the fuzzy insects are inclined to spin around on tiny balls, even without first receiving instruction or having other incentives. “There are lots of animals who play just for the purposes of enjoyment, but most examples come from young mammals and birds,” Lars Chittka, a professor at Queen Mary University of London, told the Guardian. “This research provides a strong indication that insect minds are far more sophisticated than we might imagine.”

Screaming from neighbors was a common occurrence for many people but when your neighbors are relatives it gets everyone curious, if not worried. But all three occupants are happy, loving, and healthy. When asked Marco would always dismiss it or blame himself for the arguments.
The entire family was gathered for a dinner under a clear night sky. Marco, Olivia and baby Isabel were there with the rest of the family for once.
Olivia was from Maine and only heard about Cuba in history class before she met Marco on a trip to Florida, she loved explaining what she knew of Cuba’s history to the family, like they didn’t know their own history despite the older generations actually living through the events.
“Oh, Marco, mijo, Cómo estás?” Mrs. McClain asked with worry etched on her face like carved stone. Grabbing Marco’s arms and face to check him over.
“lo estoy haciendo bien, ma” Marco said fondly, taking his arms from her hands. Olivia hadn’t liked that giving a hard glare.
“Maria why are you fussing over my husband like I abuse him?” Olivia asked with a pointed look. Mumbles of “oh brother” “here we go again” and the occasional “can we have one family meal without this?”
“It’s not like women can even abuse men, and if he ever tried I would come at him with my frying pan.” Ending her statement with a smirk, with that she walked away.
“Esa demonio mujer” muttered Luis, his wife Lisa gave him a half-assed glare for that. Little Isabel waddled Over to her papa and made grabby hands trying to say “arriba” and those around her coo’d, the tension forgotten.
Dinner proceeded as normal, the kids taking to long to sit down and being threatened with cold food, prayer being interrupted for many reasons, to finally passing food around the giant table. Lance was sat between Rachel and Marco who had baby Isabel on Marcos other side. Halfway through the meal Marco stopped eating. That wasn’t normal.
Lance looked around to see if anyone was listening or looking in his general direction, no one was. Lance was trying to figure out how to say what he wanted to say without sounding like a lunatic. I can’t just say the buzzing in my hand when I hug you isn’t like the buzzing it was when I hugged you two days from yesterday! Lance was really confused on how to approach this topic with his brother.
Marco realized Lance wanted to ask him something, but it was funny to just watch his facial expressions as he tried to ask.
“What’s up little man? You seem worried.” Marco asked in a quiet voice, he noticed how Lance looked around before trying to ask so he kept quiet. Lances royal blue eyes shot up to meet his own Carmel brown.
“Your not okay and I don’t know how to show I know, because what I want to say is loco. I think you should got to the hop- hosp- gah el, los enfermos sitio. ” Lance’s voice wavered at the end, but he got his point across.
“Well, I don’t think you are crazy, but I know you know things without a reason so can you explain?” Marco silenced Lance’s worries and asked what he was dying to know.

“Um well, when I hug people, or touch people it’s like a buzzing under my skin. Not in a weird way! Like when mama plays music so loud you feel it? Yah that feeling, people have a color around them to like glowing… but not at the same time?” Lance took a deep breath, more people were paying attention now. “Like the color is on your skin but hovering? Anyway when I hugged you, you nom-normally have a really strong buzz like Veronica, Luis, and others, but you buzz was smaller like grandma E. before she went to the doctor and got better!” That revelation had people gasping and looking at each other in worry, grandma E. was in the hospital after a stroke.
“But instead of no color around your head like grandma, you have no color around your belly. Oh your color is like a purple blue, it’s nice to look at.” Lance ended his little speech with a smile.
Rachel, Lances older twin, whipped her head around and gave Lance a hard look, moved her head to look at her mother and said.
“Do people really not have that every day? No feeling other people’s feelings when you hug or seeing their colors fade when ignored ?” The expression on her face said it all, what she saw as a basic part of her everyday life was somehow odd or magical.
The table burst out in whispers, some of them were shouts, “Of course, both twins have complimentary gifts!” Many nodded their heads in agreement. Luis looked around the table and stood up, gesturing for his older brother to join him.
“I’m going to drive Marco to the hospital, we will tell you the results as soon as possible, cmon.”
“you all believe that bullshit!” Olivia broke out from her stunned silence.
“I know you are going to lose custody and go back to America after the divorce.” Lance said with a righteous attitude, and a smug smile.
“What divorce?“ Asked Marco, concern painting his face. Olivia was red as a tomato from embarrassment, or anger, it was hard to tell.
“I only thought about that a few months ago! I never told anyone, how do you know that?“ all poise had left her body as she went on a rampage of incoherent screams.
“My dreams.” Was the only answer given from Lance as he started playing with baby Isabel with his twin.
Later they found out that Olivia had been hitting Marco in the stomach with a frying pan, and as a result had caused hematoma in the liver. Sadly, when the divorce papers and restraining order were served, baby Isabel was with Olivia meaning no one could get to her until after the custody agreement was made.

Lances first thought after seeing the broken panel was a long list of cuss words on repeat that would have his grandmother rolling in her grave.
The room was getting smaller as his breathing got heavier, his thoughts passed through his head mile a minute, breath! BREATH! Nothing worked. The real panic set in, no food, no way of communicating to the castle, no way to know where he was headed. Lances chest moved in a poor mimicry of breathing, he wasn’t dry heaving but his body was going through the motions. How did he get here, where is here, he has no water, No way to communicate his family- the team. Lance’s breathing stopped, his thoughts slowed from a rampaging waterfall to a trickling stream.
Lance rose from his place on the floor to his knees. when did I get on the floor? He took a deep breath, which was oddly easy given what happened.

Looking around the pod Lance realized it was actually pretty spacious. It was big enough for a loft that was probably for storage. He had been on the floor when he woke up and there wasn’t a bed. As he was in the front of the ship. He was farthest from the airlock door, and in front of the control panel was what looked like glass, but the gold shine hinted otherwise. On the right wall had a door under the loft, and closer to him was a screen the size of an average flat screen T.V. and to the left of him was a wall of cabinets, a shelf and under that more cabinets.
Lance knew standing up would be problem, the nausea from just being on his knees was a lot already. He decided to just shuffle over to the mystery door, inside was a toilet and sanitizer. If I’m going to throw up I might as well do it in the toilet. Resigned to his fate he stood up.
Grabbing the counter Lance pulled himself up. The effect was immediate. Tremors wracked his body, gagging on nothing till something came up.

Lance stayed in the bathroom for a while after in case it would happen again. It didn’t. Sighing he stood up without the excessive need to puke thankfully. Moving back to the main room he shuffled to the wall of cabinets and proceeded to open each and every one of them.

Lance was fucked, if he had three meals a day the food would only last a two days and a breakfast, having two meals a day would last 3 1/2 days. So Lance resolved to only eat one packet a day.
At least I won’t get cold with all the blankets.
After putting everything back into the cabinets, Lance moved to the other side of the room and taped the screen. It lit up, half in a partial map of the general direction the ship was moving and the other half was a keyboard! Upon closer inspection, the keyboard was in Altean.
Looking back to the map the trip would take 12 quintants or 14 days as 12quintants x 28 hours =336 hours and 336hours/24hours = 14 days. It was always kind of funny how people always thought Lance was dumb, as if he didn’t pass the garrison admission tests like everyone else. This was going to be a pain in the ass to deal with. On top of everything his original plan of one food packet a day had to be halved!
Lance decided to orient his circadian rhythm to the destination time and grabbed all four blankets and head up to sleep in the loft, using one blanket as a pillow, another as a cushion between the metal and his skin, with the last two to use as regular blankets.
Day 1 2 - Lance managed to sleep for a whopping 20 hours meaning he woke up really hungry, after doing the calculations, he could technically eat a whole food packet as he didn’t eat one when he divided his portions. The food packets tasted a little better that the food good at the castle, it was probably some spice that was used as a preservative. For the rest of the 12 hour “day” period Lance wandered around the ship familiarizing herself everything he could.
Day 3 - after eating and going to the bathroom, Lance mainly stared out at the void sometimes getting up to stretch. Lance did learn that if he swiped at the it would disappear and show a radar. It soon became part of his hourly routine.
Day 4 - similar to day three his morning started out the same but instead of just sitting around all day he did a basic exercise routine from his early garrison days. The only difference was instead of trying to do everything as fast as possible Lance did parts of it every hour after checking the radar.
Day 5
Lance woke up to blaring alarms and a shaking ship. What type of fucked up turbulence is this? With a deep sigh he left the safety of the loft. Now able to stand he turned to the wall computer to look at the radar.
“Well that’s just plain rude.” Lance’s voice was scratchy from lack of use. There was a big Galra ship that was shooting at him. It’s not like I can do anything until they get on the ship. Lance decided to just wait until they either explode or board his ship.
It was another hour before they started to board. Lance decided hie wanted to have the element of surprise and got on the loft. When the first sentry came in Lance jumped it. The sentry thankfully had a gun and after a disappointing fight where he was easily overpowered, Lance found himself in an cell.
Nursing a gunshot to the leg, he had to rip his pant leg to make a bandage. The cells next to him had to or three beings in each of them, and four cells down was an alien that was screaming and shaking the bars was causing a big ruckus.
Stick it to the man. Eventually a big galra came and went bringing food to the others. And when he came to lances cell two more guards walked in. Big guy number 1 opened the cell door as big guys number 2 and 3 when to grab Lance. Unable to properly fight half starved and bleeding, Lance willingly went with them.
The others haven’t even come to rescue me. To Lance nothing showed up on the radar and it had been probably over six days sense he woke up in the pod. They really abandoned me, if they were looking they would have found me by now. Lance didn’t even care to map out where the guards were taking him.
Oh shit, Lance started struggling when he saw the room they brought him into. A god damn torture room. A Druid stood in the back of the room preparing something. Lance was able to twist out of one of the guards grip, and became more aggressive to the other guard. Lance forgot about the third guard. Lance felt a hand on the back of his neck and was throw on the floor. The next thing lance registered was that he was tied to the table and all three guards where walking out of the room.
The Druid walked into Lances peripheral al with a knife and a syringe. With skill the Druid moved the knife to Lances neck, barely touching but still a threat. And stabbed Lance with the syringe and started chanting.
The only thing Lance could register was blinding white hot pain. Thrashing violently until his arms and legs were tingling and twitching. The scream he had let out had the ship shaking, equipment fell to the floor and a cabinet fell. Lance could here the Druid curse in some foreign language. After Lance stoped screaming the Druid grabbed a golden liquid ad threw it on Lance yelling “DIE”
Lance didn’t die, in fact he did the opposite, he healed. The burning sensation faded into a simmer and then to nothing.
“What the fuck was that!” Lance screeched. The Druid proceeded to bolt to the other side of the room type on a computer and join some form of demented group call for haggar and her magic friend group. The Druid proceeded to shout something in the same foreign language as before and everyone shut up, haggar said something and the Druid grabbed another vile of the gold stuff and poured it out onto him.
“WHY do you keep doing THAT!” Shocked screeching came from the call.
The empty voice of haggar broke the chaos. “ I will be there soon, give him food.” And hung up.

Havana, Cuba - As I sat on the sea wall at the Malecon, the sea breeze brought the waves from the Florida Straits, I'm reminded of just how connected this island nation is to the wider world. The colonial buildings lining the streets with their distinctive Spanish architecture are one obvious link to Cuba's historical ties to Europe. But look closer and you'll find influences from around the globe woven into the fabric of Cuban culture.

On my first night in Havana's Vedado neighbourhood, I wandered into a lively casa de la música drawn in by the infectious Afro-Cuban rhythms spilling out onto the street. As I nursed a mojito, I watched locals and visitors alike become enraptured by the fast-paced rumba dancing. The vibrant moves were clearly influenced by the Bantu cultures of west and central Africa, brought over by enslaved people during the colonial era.
This blending of cultures isn't unique to dance and music. You can trace these global connections through Cuba's diverse cuisine too. Of course, these influences go both ways across the Florida Straits. In Miami's Little Havana, you can sip an authentic Cuban coffee while surrounded by Americana like Chevrolet car sculptures - reminders of the lasting Cuban impact on the United States too.
As travellers, we're taught to search for the "authentic" version of places and cultures. But the more I experience, the more I realize authenticity is a nebulous concept. What I find more rewarding is leaning into the specificity of how people and places intermingle in complex ways over time.
So hey, I'm all about inviting you to see travel like this wherever you go. Let's ditch this idea of hard lines between cultures. Instead, let's celebrate the long story of folks mingling and swapping stuff that really jazzes up our world.

"Captain Vought" was rumored to be among troops to oversee the unification, unconfirmed. the berlin blockade begins; the crisis started on june 24, 1948, when soviet forces blockaded rail, road, and water access to allied-controlled areas of berlin. the united states and united kingdom responded by airlifting food and fuel to berlin from allied airbases in western germany, "Captain Vought" was seen helping unload supplies.

"Captain Vought" is sent to berline once more, berlin crisis of 1961, on october 27, 1961, the provocative games took a serious turn as another probe prompted the soviets to deploy 10 tanks on the eastern side of checkpoint charlie. the us had been using tanks to support their escorts of vehicles into East Berlin, and now was met by equal force. the soviet and american tanks stood a mere 100 yards apart from each other, and both sides readied for battle. the showdown of tanks at the wall became a visual emblem of the dangerous situation these world powers were locked into. "Captain Vought" was in berlin to aid if it escalated into a battle. they mutually agreed to pull back from the standoff, and the confrontation eased. "Captain Vought" returns to the united states shortly after.
1962 --- thomas godolkin, an understudy of frederick vought had proposed a subsidiary of vought and godolkin "university" is established. "Captain Vought" escorts an elderly frederick vought to the red ribbon opening. october, 1962, cuban missile crisis, "Captain Vought" infilitrated cuba and 'persuades' vasily aleksandrovich arkhipov to dismantle the nuclear missiles, unconfirmed, potential vought involvement.
1963 --- assassination of john f. kennedy in dallas.
late 1963 --- frederick vought dies of a heartattack, he's found in his office in vought tower by leon who proceeded to do cpr but it was far too late. he attends his funeral procession carrying his coffin.
1963-onward --- leon mourns fredrick vought. 1964 --- "Captain Vought" was aboard the uss maddox when they came under attack of vietnamese torpedoes, since the passing of frederick he sought to be away from vought for a while.
1965 --- president johnson escalates the united states military involvement in the vietnam war. "Captain Vought" only served in the battle of ia drang valley, until vought pulled him out, seeing a lost cause in the war efforts.
1963-1970 --- leon marshall "Captain Vought" has his reawakening and spirals with extended drug use.
1968 --- the U.S. signs nuclear non-proliferation treaty to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and to further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament and general and complete disarmament. vought puts stakes in united states and secretly russia. "Captain Vought" attends the medal award ceremony by president johnson to honor soldiers from vietnam.
1970 --- vought leans into the media-based superheroes farther. kenneth baker is brought in, as a stand-in for "Captain Vought" when leon refused or wasn't present. leon immediately hates him on principle but he's also relieved. stan edgar is brought in on contract.
1971 --- payback tryouts are held. "Captain Vought" leon attends the event with coercion that he's gets to pick his team. kenneth baker, plain clothing, and stan edgar also attend.
1972-1979/1984 --- leon spends majority of his time away from vought as he can, its not always successful and this is when legend really ramps up his distaste for leon, at his refusal to cooperate with a lot of vought events and filming. leon proposes retirement for himself. retire "Captain Vought" and his suit. his contract would've ended in 1980, they somehow convince him to renew it for another five years, with their scheming plans.
1980 --- jonah vogelbaum, a member of voughts science team brings leon "Captain Vought" in to collect 'semen specimen(s)' "Captain Vought" takes one look at the cup, throws it to the ground, laughing as he walked out of his office. he refused, but it's taken against his will anyways. he's drugged by novichok and they extract it by force.
1981 --- april of 1981 homelander is born, in a vought lab, to a redacted mother who dies during child-birth. they begin their attempt at grooming him to be their perfect little hero. we all know how that one plays out.
1984 --- the events of this year are tentative, depending on how I branch off for the different verses. "mission in nicaragua" --- disguised as an effort to develop more relations between the military and vought, was a mission but its primary goal was to secure the asset "captain vought" the entirety of payback is in on it save for captain vought. he's secured by russian forces as part of voughts ever present pact with russia. his new contract from 1980 would've ended two months after this "trip".

Pan Am R&D
Pan Am was founded by Juan Trippe on March 14, 1927 and played an important role in shaping the global airline industry into what we have today. Pan Am was originally founded as a small air mail and passenger service that operated between Key West, Florida and Havana Cuba, but quickly expanded its routes to the other parts of the Caribbean and South America. In 1939 Pan Am became the first airline to routinely fly passengers across the Atlantic Ocean, flying from New York to Marseilles, France. In 1958, Pan Am was one of the first airlines to introduce jet travel with the Boeing 707, which made international travel faster and even more comfortable. This move sparked the Jet Age in commercial aviation. Pan Am would continue to be a juggernaut in worldwide travel, and would even dabble in the Space Age by partnering with NASA, playing a role in the early stages of the Apollo moon missions, including the development of the Lunar Module. In the early 1990s Pan Am experienced a mix of financial, operational, and competitive issues leading to its bankruptcy and liquidation in the early 1990s.
On October 30th, 1977 Pan Am flight 50 was a historic flight held to celebrate the airline’s 50th anniversary. This flight was the first commercial airline flight to fly over both the North and South Poles. The flight started in San Francisco, flew over the North Pole, stopped in London, flew over South Africa, flew over the South Pole, stopped in New Zealand, and then returned to San Francisco. The flight took a total of 54 hours and 7 minutes to complete. During the flight, passengers were treated to special meals, fine wines and Gucci fashion shows as they headed towards the North Pole. Unlike previous polar flights, which were primarily for the wealthy, this flight was accessible to a wider range of passengers allowing many more people to see the beauty of the poles. (Project Assumption) On March 14, 2027, Panam will return to the Airline scene with Pan Am 100 to celebrate its 100th anniversary, creating a unique flight experience with unique branding to kick off the return of Pan Am in the 21st century.
The marketing objective of Pan Am 100 is to create an exciting “kick off” event for the return of the airline, raising awareness and generating excitement for the return of the airline. Pan Am’s goal will be to return to the top international airline. Success will be measured in the short term by the number of customers who buy tickets to fly in Pan Am 100, and going forward it will be measured by the number of countries passengers can travel to amenity quality, availability of non stop flights, and the speed of flights. Competition includes: Singapore Airlines (Singapore Airlines Official Website | Book International Flight Tickets), Qatar Airways (Book Flights with a World-class Airline | Qatar Airways), Eva Air (Homepage - EVA Air | North America (English)), and Emirates (Book a flight | Emirates United States). The target audience for the event and the airline is commercial, we want the highest number of people to ride and have it be accessible. It is very important to provide safe and convenient international travel. Pan Am 100 will generate excitement for the return of the Pan Am airline as a whole by showcasing the airline's mastery in international travel and on flight experience. We will present an experience to the customer that is something that they do not want to miss, with an excited yet refined tone.

Why did Florida keep switching back and forth between being part of the Confederacy or staying loyal to The United States during the Civil War?
COMMENTARY:
As usual, Karl Burkhalter leaves some stuff out.
The most successful blockade runners trolled between the pirate basis of Cuba and the Atlantic south of the Dismal Swamp in Florida. Jimmy Buffet’s Island Girl theme began with the Rhett Butlers of Havana and gun running and boot legging routes into ports with Federal forts occupied by January 6 long liners.
Jefferson Davis was headed for Florida when he was captured. The northern propaganda was that he was dressed as a woman trying to sneak away from Justice. The Federal forts occupied by American patriots who had been led astray by politicians exactly like Tommy Tuberville and Moscow Mitch and the whole Republican Study Caucus, which disseminates disinformation from the cluster of Conservative think tanks committed to the continued domination of the Ivy League Socialism of the John Birch Society in the Party of Lincoln and are currently the January 6 Republicans committed to reversing the 2020 election and continuing to obstruct Stage 3 of Eisenhower’s transformation process to transform the Military Industrial Complex to what is referred to popularly as The Green New Deal.
Jefferson Davis was held for two years at Fortress Monroe which is one of the Federal forts that were built from the lessons assholes like Tommy Tuberville learned from the ability of the British to burn Washington with one hand tied behind their backs and a little pay backs for the Boston Tea Party. Tommy Tuberville understands the military with the same command of the subject that the French politicians who thought like Tommy Tuberville and and the neo-cons who stampeded America into Iraq and then fucked up Afghanistan when Trump unilaterally surrendered to the Taliban.
The fact that alleged Patriots and rational military observer like Karl Burkhalter hasn’t raised holy hell about Trump’s unilateral surrender to the Taliban except that Karl Burkhalter shares John Bolton’s Ivy League Socialism agenda to withdraw from NATO and go full hegemony as a feature of the Free Market conceits of the Fresh Water Economics of Jefferson Davis and Tommy Tuberville. Jefferson Davis was hoping to get passage from one of those ports with a Federal fort controlled by Tommy Tuberville to Mexico and start over as a slave owner in another republic. Jefferson Davis ended up in a Federal fort built as a result of the lessons learned by Fresh Water politicians like Tommy Tuberville and Dan Sickles about the interior line from the British fleet anchored at Tangiers Island. The politicians like Tommy Tuberville between the Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars had concentrated on business, and, like the French politicians who were too cheap and stupid to complete the Maginot Line to the sea, which was a materially superior technology to what actually won the war. The 1st Minnesota is what Yaweh, Queen of Battle, is all about, what the narrative is from Jimi Hendrix’s cover of the Star Spangled Banner as Woodstock. Both sides at Gettysburg is hat Yaweh, Queen of Battle is all about. It’s what Lincoln meant by both sides prayed to the same God. Both sides followed Yaweh, Queen of Battle, into Bloody Angle. When Jefferson said that the Tree of Liberty needed to be refreshed by the blood of Patriots, that’s what it looks like. It doesn’t look like white supremacists climbing the walls of the US Capitol of January 6. That’s what Jefferson Davis was guilty of and why Trump will go to jail.
Ft Monroe was the reason why the South couldn’t win the war. Robert E. Lee was the Army engineer tasked with completing The Gibraltar of the Chesapeake. In the military theory that emerged from the effects of Newton , Hegel and Napoleon, Jomini posited a battle space composed of two opposing walls of opponents, a third wall of combat for control of the 4th side. Fort Monroe was the 4th wall of the War of Rebellion and Lincoln held the deed. And Robert E. Lee knew it when he accepted the commission of the Confederate Congress. It was like Tom Landry signing a contract with Jimmy Jones. Only Jimmy Jones is Tommy Orville and Tommy Orville believes Ft Sumter trumps Fort Monroe.
Which is why Karl Burkhalter, as a Lost Causer, hasn’t commented on the fact that Trump surrendered unilaterally surrendered to the Taliban and betrayed the women of Afghanistan in much the same way Sam Alito betrayed the women of America. Kurt Burkhalter understands military subjects with the same Fresh Water perspective as Tommy Tuberville. As a Lost Causer, he gets the undefeated nature of Florida’s role in the War of the Rebellion while leaving out the fact that Ron DeSantis is running on the legacy of Jefferson Davis, whose sole ambition from April 1961 until Lincoln was assassinated was to storm the US Capitol and hang Abraham Lincoln on the steps of the Capitol.
