As someone with a history of sleep parylisis I think shadowy figures and terrifying Visages get Too Much Credit!!
No I think the worst part of sleep parylisis is the NOT Quite There portion. That moment when your cozy, and EXHAUSTED but theirs a soft mental block between your brain and real sleep.... Oh you'll dream. You WILL dream but you will be SO awake. It's like a static overtakes your brain and your being attacked by some sort of abstract geometric shapes and colors. And it's worse than any paryalized fear because you know your almost sleeping but it's not TRUE sleep... absolutely dastardly if I do say so myself!!
