My sister, the one in Missouri, woke up to an ice storm this morning. She had to drive to work on roads so iced over that The Weather Channel was there this morning broadcasting live. Me? I'm driving around with the air conditioning on in my car.

Meet Benjamin.

He is my weeping fig.

We bought him at Lowe’s and he was planted with some Hypoestes and was just gorgeous.

I put him in front of an East facing window in my plant nook and he loved it. Sprouting new leaves every single day and you could tell he was very happy! I was nervous to move him because I read weeping figs are given that name because they are very “temperamental” and will lose many leaves when disturbed.

Well one evening after Eva went to bed, Julian and I were misting the plants and checking on them and I notice millipedes crawling all in Benjamin’s pot 🤢🤢🤢🤢

I immediately freaked out and researched and tons of people said “it’s the soil! But it’s fine they eat decaying matter and aerate the soil!” But still i don’t want creepy crawlers in my house!!! So I had no choice but to move him outside and plan to repot him.

Sooo, he went from inside at 76degrees to outside in 118 degree daytime weather- 90ish degree evening weather for 24 hours, was washed completely of his soil and given a new pot and soil.

I thought FOR SURE he would drop leaves and freak out. But he didn’t. He remained strong through all of that. Until a week later.

Now here we are and he has lost soooo many of his leaves. It’s pretty sad. The trauma of the change in temps and environment and repot finally took hold. But you know what, I already see spots of new growth. Tiny bright green leaves starting to grow.

It’s amazing really. How resilient he is. How during the “trauma” he didn’t react but it still affected him so much that finally he let go and dropped leaves. But then, new life. He will look different than he did when I first got him but I am sure he will find happiness again in his new pot, new soil, and slightly new spot (I moved him about 18 inches over inside the house 😂).

I see now why God intended for us to take care of His creation. Through that we see so much of His glory and grace reflected on that. I see it with my kids of course but I see it with my plants. I saw it with Benjamin. There I am taking care of a simple tree and I see my own postpartum journey. Birth is hard that is no secret, babies are hard and some days I tough it up and make it through but I’m losing leaves guys I’m losing them LOL but I know there’s new growth happening. A new beginning. I know I’m not done yet. I’m still becoming. I am resilient.
