some random 4400 theories after my latest rewatch
The future doesn't have tech that lets them predict what abilities people develop; they knew because all of the 4400 took promicin in the original timeline. That's why the disappearances only go back to 1946--they had to be people who were alive when promicin became available.
The reason the future originally didn't want Shawn even though his ability is so world-changing is because they wanted him to be one of the first people to take promicin and forever associate taking promicin with amazing healing powers.
Kyle's visions-of-what-needs-to-happen ability was a lynchpin of the future's plan and his coma required a lot of adjustment. (Including deciding to give Shawn his powers early so that there was someone to wake him up from the coma.)

I think a lot about cancelled shows that I loved that never got to really shine- Earth 2, VR5, Dead Like Me, The 4400, Firefly, People of Earth, Carnivàle, etc.) Do you have any pet shows you loved watching (aside from 4400, which I know you worked on) that never got the recognition they deserved because they were cancelled too soon?
I loved DEAD LIKE ME, too.
Recent shows that were cancelled too soon IMO include REBOOT, THE PUNISHER, DAREDEVIL (though that's sorta kinda coming back), and MISS SHERLOCK (and that one is particularly tragic).
Others that come to mind: VERONICA MARS, FREAKS AND GEEKS, JOAN OF ARCADIA, ROME, and TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES.

March 21, 2023
Ahead of the latest study’s measurement period, the cancellation of Batwoman, Charmed, DC’s Legend of Tomorrow, 4400, Legacies and Naomi (on just The CW alone), plus Killing Eve, Claws, Dickinson, Astrid and Lily Save the World, The Wilds, Genera+ion, Y: The Last Man, Dear White People, Gentefied and Saved by the Bell (to name but a few), had already made a dent in LGBTQ representation.
But as reflected in this year’s report, the ending or upcoming ending of 54 shows such as Queer as Folk (which was home to 11 LBGTQ characters), Warrior Nun, Star Trek: Picard, Westworld, New Amsterdam, Reboot, Nancy Drew and Riverdale will result in the loss of no fewer than 140 LGBTQ characters — or 24 percent of all LGBTQ characters on TV. An additional 35 LGBTQ characters counted in this year’s study (which monitors shows that premiered or are expected to return between June 1, 2022 and May 31, 2023) will not be returning due to a character leaving the series or a closed-ended anthology or miniseries format.
Bisexual representation is still sad. Asexual representation is still tragic.
* Of the 596 LGBTQ characters counted across all three platforms, 35% were gay men, 30% were lesbians, 25% were bisexual+, 4% were queer, 2% were straight trans characters, 2% had an undetermined sexual orientation, and 1% were asexual.
[...]
Que
*The percentage of bisexual+ characters on TV (25%) continues to land far below the actual population of bisexual+ people, which account for 58% the LGBTQ community (per Gallup).

hmmm, how aboooouuut....top 5 tv shows!!!
Hmm, changes all the time without rhyme or reason because I've never met those two in my life but currently I'd say...
The Midnight Club - dunno where it'll end up ranking in the long run but likely to stick around in my forever faves, I really adored it.
The 4400 - I'm cheating and talking about both the original and the reboot which are WILDLY different takes on the same premise but that's kinda the part I love, because its such a very specific premise and yet both versions of the show ran with it in extremely different directions just by shifting their focus.
Farscape - Look, these weird alien puppet characters and their acid trip space adventures were formative for me. There's no need to look too closely at that.
The Expanse - It was made for me, I was made for it.
On My Block - the characters dude, the chaaaaaaracters. I miss that funky little foursome of friends so damn much. Plus, y'know Jasmine. Because....Jasmine.
But because I am me and its not like I can just leave it at that, honorable mentions to Abbott Elementary, Ugly Betty, The Witcher, Dark Matter, Leverage, Killjoys, Arcane, Battlestar Galactica 2003 if we just....stop at the second season, that's it, that's the end, hello to Season One of How To Get Away With Murder and Season One only, the Lost In Space reboot if I squint really hard and convince myself the dad's not there, and oh yeah, some show about like, an adolescent lycanthrope I guess.

Got halfway through the OG 4400 and am unable to watch the remaining 26 episodes in two days because I have to work and eat and stuff, but the full series is $20 on Amazon so I might as well get it in the next day or two. Anyhoo, 18 hours in a week is a record fore in binging so here are my thoughts:
This series is a really odd mixture of somewhat mediocre mid 00s cable TV entertainment, sci fi ideas that are intriguing but executed inelegantly, and honest emotion. Is it art? No. Is there a lot of stuff that really gets to you despite the sometimes hamfisted execution? Yes.
I have vivid memories of watching this during the second season (streaming wasn't a thing back then, so I actually watched the first season on Netflix DVDs), reading Internet arguments about it, and really, really loving Tom and Alana and that he was given a wife in an AU episode, they came back together in the regular timeline and there was no angst or love triangles or courting, they were just happily married and that was it. Unfortunately, that only lasted a season and a half before she was mysteriously abducted back to the 1800s and Tom went on to date his government flunky boss and I quit watching the show in protest and haven't picked it up for 15 years. The AU episode is lovely and any time a sci-fi show needs to introduce a love interest of great importance I recommend they do it this way.
So Alana supposedly was written off because Karina Lombard was unhappy and I read an interview with the showrunner where he said Tom's new government flunky love interest was their first real attempt at romance and it hadn't worked so far and it was going to be the greatest romance that a summer show on the USA network had ever seen and um, EXCUSE ME. Alana was sexy, exotic, kind, and a decent stepmom. You think he can do better? Not even. That said, she didn't really get to do much after that AU episode this first season and they should have tried harder to keep her if that was the problem in the first place.
As someone whose peers are old enough to have teenagers and who has zero idea how to deal with all of that, Tom's desperation at trying to retrieve his son out of the sullen stranger he was when he came out of the coma and then futilely trying to lose him again to prison rely resonates for me in a way it didn't before.
Also resonating with me? Richard and Lily being simultaneously grateful for and terrified of their homicidal toddler. Kids, right? I remember little of the third season except that adult Isabelle wasn't as scary as she was when she was a baby.
Marshalala Ali is really in an acting master class way beyond anyone else here. Thing is I still think of him as "the guy from the 4400" and probably always will. Patrick Flueger and Billy Campbell probably come the closest to him but everyone else is just....amateur
I actually don't think the general public knew as muuch about Scientology when this was airing as we do now and it's really obvious what they were going for with Jordan Collier's "movement".
I found out while watching this that Summer Glau basically quit acting about eight years ago, ostensibly to raise her daughters. I know she was probably aging out of the characters she used to play but I remember when it used to seem that she was in everything.
I know the series was rebooted last year but I have zero interest in it and plan to keep it that way. But in the meantime, I think I'll always remember it fondly (despite them getting rid of Alana) and I found it held up on a revisit more strongly than I thought.

okay, I finished that 1 season of 4400 reboot and it's been not so long after that and I don't remember anything from this show already, the original show was much better.
so now I don;t have a show to dive in, so I decided to watch leverage, I have absolutely no idea what it is about and my entire curiosity is based on one tumblr post about a character from this show
lets go

So I was reading this WordPress post on LGBTQIA+ representation in media, and
Diversity and intersectionality must be taken into account in representation. Why is it that the thin white cisgender gay male is always on screen? Why is it that the rest of the community is never seen on screen, is sexualized or not taken seriously? We’ve seen too many cancellations of TV shows with queer female characters, such as First Kill, Teenage Bounty Hunters, Everything Sucks, One Day at A Time, I Am Not Okay With This, Gentefied, Trinkets, Atypical, GLOW, Dead to Me, Batwoman, Legend of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Legacies, Charmed, 4400, and Roswell, New Mexico and more.
I’m specifically talking about Charmed (2018) since it was namedropped in the article, but here’s the thing:
it was NOT a good show to begin with
Mel Vera was a poorly-written character, and her sexuality was sold as some big plot twist in early marketing
because Mel was a poorly written character who was also lesbian she was by default a poorly-written lesbian
the show pissed off the original series’ fandom from Day One and continued to have ratings decline as it went on
the Charmed reboot only reached four seasons because of The CW’s streaming deal with Netflix; the first season came in below the mark where, on any other network, it would have been cancelled after the mid-season finale (if not after the first season); it was not selling well internationally or doing well via streaming, so when The CW was sold, it was one of the shows to get axed
(spoiler: one of its lead characters being a Puerto Rican-American lesbian had nothing to do with it being cancelled)
Melanie Vera, the token lesbian of the new lead trio, was almost immediately sidelined in her own show when season 2 introduced white bisexual English demon-witch Abigael Jamieson-Caine. She also went through more love interests than both Macy and Maggie combined, and none of her love interests had much screen time (pretty much all of Mel’s romantic relationships developed offscreen, compared to Macy and Maggie getting multiple development–and sex!–scenes with their respective boyfriends)
