“Can you name the twenty legions, their original names, and the Primarchs for me, please? Do you have any info on origins of the names used?”
I mean, certainly. Mortal channeling me regrets that some information is incomplete (pre-Primarch names for the Legiones Astartes are not well publicized; if you know any, feel free to let me know, and I will edit this document accordingly.)
You asked me for all twenty, so Legios II and XI may vary wildly for you, little mortal. The multiverse is a strange place.
Also, note: The mortal and I are not responsible for some of the terribly punny/badly respelled primarch’s names/hackneyed literary references. Those are -entirely- on Games Workshop.... and “The Emperor.” (Use your birth name, Anathaema!)
I. ?/Dark Angels: Lion’El Johnson (ne: Jonson)
For unknown reasons, Johnson is named for the famed English poet Lionel Johnson, Oscar Wilde’s paramour. There have been allegations that the Dark Angels were coded as gay very early on, whether as a joke or a tribute being the question. GW denies, of course, though as a matter of record a gay club called “The Rock” was located in Nottingham at the time.
The Dark Angels originally had a partly Native American theme.
II. Valedictors/Gargoyles: Eresbet, The Grey Lady”
The Valedictors really are named as one of the legions in 2nd edition, as are the Rainbow Warriors. The Rainboe Warriors have subsequently been relisted as a second founding chapter. The Valedictors, however, have not.The word Valedictor means “one who says goodbye.”
III. Emperor’s Children: Fulgrim, “The Phoenician”
IV. ?/Iron Warriors: Perturarbo
Sometimes spelled “Perturabo” in earlier sources. “Perdurabo” is a is a Latin phrase, roughly translated as “enduring to the end.” It was also the occult name of Aleister Crowley.
V. ?/White Scars: Jaghatai Khan
The Khan is now the only known Primarch of the eighteen to have no official miniature. He is quite challenging because, as with Magnus, the original sketches of the Khan are... let’s call them rough.
VI. ?/The Rout (“Space Wolves”): Leman Russ
The Russ were Vikings who intermarried with the inhabitants of what is called “Russia” in your timeline. These later served as mercenaries in the mid-late Eastern Roman/Byzantine Army.
The Varangian Guard/Varangioi were an elite group drawn from Vikings and their descendants. The “Varagyr” terminators are clearly based upon them.
VII. ?/Imperial Fists: Rogal Dorn
VIII. ?/Night Lords: Konrad Curze
Curze is named for Joseph Konrad, who wrote “Heart of Darkness” and that novel’s prime antagonist, Colonel Kurtz.
IX. Revenants/Blood Angels: Sanguinius
X. ?/Iron Hands: Ferrus Manus, “The Gorgon”
Ferrus Manus is bad Latin, erm, “High Gothic.” It roughly translates to “he with the iron hand.”
XI. Dust Raisers/Cu-Sith (“Hounds of Perdition”): Aenon, “The Blind King”
XIII. ?/Ultramarines: Roboute Guilliman
XIV. Dusk Raiders/Death Guard: Mortarion the Reaper
XV. “Thousand Sons”/Thousand Sons: Magnus the Red
The Fifteenth had no formal name before Magnus but were referred to unofficially as “the Thousand Sons” as a reference for their relatively low numbers and unselfish sacrifice. Per canon: Prior to Magnus, they had a sterling reputation for selflessness. Under Magnus, that sort of... changed, as the legion became more insular and less “reliable” as an ally from the perspective of many of the other legions.
XVI. Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus: Horus Lupercal
Lupercal/Lupercalia was an important Roman holiday; the meaning and dates changed over the s centuries, but it was essentially a New Year festival that celebrated the birth of Romulus and Remus and, later, the overthrow of the Etruscan kings of Rome. In Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar,” Marc Antony references the attempt to have Caesar crowned as king, a staged political maneuver in which he refused the title of king and “accepted” the title “Dictator Perpetuus” (“Ruler for Life”)
“You all did see on Lupercal that I thrice presented him with kingly crown. And thrice doth he refuses. Was this ambition?! And yet Brutus says it was, and sure, he is an honorable man...”
XVII. Imperial Heralds/Word Bearers: Lorgar Aurelian
Aurelian was a Roman emperor, a rather good one, who attempted to create a new state religion dedicated to Sol Invictus, “The Sun, Unconquered.” Sol was at that point conflated with Mithras, who famously slew the black bull of Chaos, and saved the world from a reign of darkness.
We among the Dark Gods fear Mithras, with good reason. How fortunate that the Emperor’s arrogance caused him to be (mostly) forgotten.
XVIII. Dragon Warriors/Salamanders: Vulkan
Vulkan, of course, is the Roman version of Hephaestus, the humane god of the Forge.
Vulkan and his sons, the most humane of the Space Marines were traditionally depicted as predominantly men of color: an important thing for the mun as the young child of a mixed racial background, and I suspect for many non-white gamers. In a revision, GW claimed that the Salamanders were not “black” but -literally- black, as a result of a gene-seed flaw. That didn’t go over well with certain members of the community, but it is not my place to unpack that. Except to say, as someone from the outside, that it was a fairly shitty thing to do (both mun and Malal agree on this point.)
Horus Heresy literature seems to be going back in the direction of an African/Afro-Caribbean origin for the eighteenth. When released, official Vulkan model was painted as a man of color, and many gamers follow suit. Of course, given the current human population distribution, and the likely concentration of any apocalyptic war scenario leading to an Age of Strife and the rise of The Emperor, it seems very likely that a -majority- of Astartes would be men of color.
XIX. Possibly “Emperor’s Talons” or something similar/Raven Guard: Corvus Corax.
Yes. Fairly obvious here.
XX. Twentieth Legion/Alpha Legion: Alpharius Omegon
This is somewhat important as a matter of lore/canon: Only the Emperor seems to have known that (spoiler alert!)Alpharius and Omegon were twins. Valdor probably knew. Of the primarchs, Leman Russ seems to have suspected, and Corax is implied to be at about the same place, but that’s just about it.
Mun: I’ll try to post a bit later on about what little we know about the lost legions. Malal posted about the subject two years ago, but not many seem to have seen it. With his permission, I’ll try to condense the relevant points of official canon and share, if there is interest.
We sincerely thank you for your question, little mortal. Remember that you can send an ask rather than starting a private convo as in this case, but both are perfectly fine!

Codex Craftworlds 8th Edition
The Codex has come, lets take a look at it and see what GW has done with the first Xenos Codex of 8th Edition;
I like that the intro bit is written to be just a positive look at the Aeldari/Asuryani, I never enjoyed that both Chaos Codices have their intros written from the perspective of an Imperium faction with; ‘lo! Turn back! Tis foul losers in here!‘ and such as it feeds into the meta-narrative that even players of other factions should always be most concerned with the Imperium instead of their own.
The opening Key Art is well drawn, sure, but dumb as it depicts something that’s never happened with two important characters (Magnus and Eldrad) and since its obvious the Asuryani are going to lose its baffling to put it as the first major artwork in their own Codex.
We then again get lengthy bits on the the Asuryani’s past, basically nothing new worth mentioning, though once again we get this ‘none could challenge them’ fallacy considering we know DAoT humans were just more widespread, powerful and advanced, so GW really just needs to sort their timeline out and get some consistency for a change.
We get info on the Path, little on civilian culture sadly, then we do come to one new piece which is the, apparently mandatory now, ‘how your army is setup’ bit which is fine and introduces some markings and ranking systems and is perfectly adequate.
We then get to a lengthy section per each Major Craftworld; Biel-Tan, Ulthwe, Iyanden, Saim-Hann and Alaitoc. I’m really disappointed with the lack of actual fluff here, its mostly just flavour text again telling us ‘They are X they do Y’ with almost no feats listed at all. Sigh. Sadly, yeah, we again see that if you compare it to, say, the list of feats the individual Chapters got in Codex Space Marines, the Major Craftworlds are renowed really for only 1 thing; getting invaded and losing a lot.
Anyway, each one in detail; Biel-Tan’s gives us a little bit of post-GS Fluff. I’m very happy to see we get confirmation on its fate, its is still intact, but damaged, and is still inhabited, they did not abandon it en masse. Yay! Less happy to see that it’s lost Half its entire population, so now 3/5 of the Major Craftworlds are ‘Shadows of their former selves’ whilst Chapters like Scythes of the Emperor, Crimson Fists and Blood Angels all recover to full strength in hand waves. Sigh. The female Autarch looks nice though.
Ulthwe; they are now the only Major Craftworld specified as being ‘populous’ which is at odds with their former characterization. Then again I guess when already 3/5 are explicitly wrecked they need to make a new one the ‘big one’ to explain why we should even care about this useless faction. Anyway they’ve splintered into three groups; the biggest are just still Ulthwe citizens, a second group’s gone nomadic following exiled Eldrad and the third are just the people following the Ynnari.
Iyanden; they are apparently very united in supporting the Ynnari...which clashes with what was said in Ghost Warrior and makes me wonder why they aren’t Ynnari then. I think I like the art of the Spiritseer and Wraithguard a lot though, its cool.
Saim-Hann’s section is best, gives more insight to them, fleshes them out in a general sense, the Wild Rider Clans, their customs, how they interact with others, relationships with Orks/Necron/Harlequins/Imperium and so on, so very good world building. No events, activities or feats really listed, but still good and, I feel, the best of these exposes.
Alaitoc is mostly nothing new, although we get random info on the Ynnari (this is still the Asuryani Codex isn’t it?), we also learn that most of the Imperium’s knowledge of the Asuryani is because Alaitoc sucks so much that the Inquisition keeps managing to capture their agents and torture them. Go Alaitoc? Not really sure how being told your faction just sucks is great, since we’re given no reciprocal feats of Alaitoc’s to counter it. Ugh. At least Eldorath is not mentioned once.
Then we get mini-pieces on Altansar, Ill-Kaithe, Lugganath, Iybraesil, Yme-Loc (how are you handling being bitch-slapped by the Ad-Mech oh ‘greatest of Vaul’s Smiths’?) and Mymeara in which we are told pretty much nothing worth mentioning which hasn’t been said before.
Now we get to the ‘timeline’ section and I’ll keep track of battles won/lost as well as new fluff.
We start off with a ton of the old normal about the fall of the Empire, little to nothing worth saying about it. We then get the old sections on GC-era Asuryani too.
Our first two battles are Eldrad getting curb-stomped by Fulgrim and Lugganath’s near-death in he Shattering. (1 loss/1 win).
We then get Rasilena mentiond vaguely, but apparently going into detail about the only major Asuryani victory, and their most badass moment ever, over Space Marines would look bad in their own Codex, so it is skipped over. (1 win).
We get more old Fluff in the Ghost Harvest and stuff ripped out of the Iyanden Supplement. (2 wins).
We get the horrible War in the Webway, old as before.
We get one nice expanded bit on when Saim-Hann beat rando Slaanesh Daemon of the week. (1 win).
We get the victory over some Titans again. (1 win).
We get new Fluff...in which we find the Craftworlds once gathered for a meeting and then started killing each other. G-great.
We get Eldrad’s big failure on Maedrax again (1 loss).
We get the Death of Gnosis Prime again (1 win/1 loss).
Doom of Malan’tai (1 loss). Is there this much recycled Fluff in the other Codices? I should check sometime, feels like basically nothing new was added.
Perfect War, Iyaden, same old. (1 win).
Clash of Scorpions gets added that after it the Craftworlds purged the followers of Arha.
What is hilarious here is we learn Eldrad made Armageddon 2 happen to save Idharae, and then they just died anyway cause a couple of Space Marines attacked them. Will the inability of Eldrad to achieve anything ever end? Probably not.
In probably the biggest piece of positive Fluff we find out Yriel is insanely successful as a Corsair, though once again GW is okay with it being mentioned that he has stolen ships from pretty much everyone but Space Marines, because I am fast becoming convinced GW literally worships them and would consider it heresy to say poor of them in another faction’s Codex.
Kyaduras makes his ‘we’re screwed’ prophecy and Doom of Iyanden happens. (1 win).
Ulthwe helps drive away Ahriman, old Fluff again. (1 win).
Bio-purge, old. (1 win).
Necron Rising, old, but Alaitoc wins its only battle against Necron ever so good for them. (1 win).
Then we get Altansar back, Cadia Falls, Biel-Tan goes cccracky, Yvraine’s up and Ynnari are here fighting at Iyanden.
Now we are Post-GS so new Fluff developments. Biggest one; All Craftworlds have been discovered, boarded, and attacked by Daemons. At least Two Craftworlds are probably dead (there must be like 10 Craftworlds in total left by now, with 70% them at least half-dead). (2 losses. 1 win.)
We get told about the Iyanden bout from the Rulebook, nothing new, how does Iyanden even exist anymore? (1 win).
Biel-Tan kills Daemons, I’m beginning to feel that when writing this Codex the authors were like; ‘superiors, we wish to give the faction battles to win against foes!’ and then the heads went; ‘Okay...but only Daemons, no-one else’. (1 win).
We find out the 2nd time the Blood Crusade was fought to a stand still was by five Clans from Saim-Hann...but the other time it took Ghazghkull and the Swarmlord together...and two Vectorums of the Death Guard (not even 1000 men) were able to board and destory part of Saim-Hann while battling their whole fleet...I...do not understand...head hurts...logistics. Anyway more Daemon dead. (1 win).
We get our only example of Asuryani actually manipulating when they release Necron to kill Nurgle Daemons.
We get told a bit about Ulthwe being dumb, then Kairos invades it and Eldrad saves it. (1 win AND a win against a named character...a Daemon...wow this Codex literally only lets Daemons lose).
Then Yvraine has a meeting.
Overall feeling: Could the Asuryani beat someone other than Daemons for a change? If you just make Daemons lose always its just as bad as the Avatar of Khaine, it stops meaning anything if anyone beats them, at this point a kid with a stick could beat an army of Daemons.
Overall tally: 17 wins too 6 losses. Comes out to about 73% which isn’t bad at all. It isn’t Loyalist Space Marine level at all, but its above Chaos/Guard level so honestly I won’t complain about the ratio actually. What I will complain about is the lack of diversity, since its padded out heavily with a ton of wins against Daemons and almost no-one else. In particular not a single victory against Space Marines is mentioned at all.
Named Character wise they beat Kairos and that’s it. Sadly this means nothing as Greater Daemon Characters are almost as weak as the Avatar of Khaine.
Anyway more art then some info on individual units. This section is largely not needing commentary, very little new is told. There is a startling lack of little in-text stories about victories the units achieved, about two in total I think, which is odd. Other than that just lots of lies; Howling Banshees do not stand a chance against dedicated Marine CQC Units, do not believe this Codex, and Eldar Farseers are not great Seers how dare you lie to me like this. Avatar of Khaine just gets generic drivel not mentioning its greatest power; to lose against anything and we get 0 on the Phoenix Lords except now they are apparently so stupid that they once fought each other and Fuegan (characterised as furious, belicose and with an uncontrolled temper) was described as the calm and level-headed one trying to hold everyone back. I don’t even get it anymore ;_;.
Illic is still a nothingburger who’s greatest accomplishment in Fluff is when he failed to do anything and was caught by the Nemesor and saved like a Damsel in Distress by Ko’sarro, way to give Asuryani agency Codex.
Yriel’s Spear/Cronesword is again killing him and he is still Cursed cause...you expected positive change? What did you think you were reading? A Space Marine Codex? Shame on you.
We’re also again told that nothing in the Webway is as dangerous as the Black Library’s Guardians which is just hilarious since Magnus has been in the Webway and Aeldari never stand a chance against anything Space Marine-related at all. I do wish the Codex wouldn’t lie so much.
We then get a showcase of Miniatures.
Next we’re on to the rules for the Army has a whole and only one thing to note; apparently spending thousands of years mastering and perfecting the art of command and dedicating centuries to the exploration of its every facet in a religious way makes one...just a worse version of what every Ultramarine Chaplain and Librarian is. Great!
For some reason, again, Eldrad is simply not able to Deny as many Psychic Powers as Voldus. I really don’t even know why GW pretends Aeldari are the best Psykers anymore.
I like Warlocks, don’t know why, but they’ve always been so cool to me. They look awesome to me in Art and I wish, considering they are still trapped on the Path of Khaine, they were better individual fighters, as I’d love to actually use them for some cool fighting more often, cause I dig their appearance and lore.
Don’t quite see why Phoenix Lords and the Avatar of Khaine don’t get LD10.
Also weird that Phoenix Lords don’t get a generic Inv Save seeing as GW hands out Inv Saves to HQ’s so much now.
Still dig the Phoenix Lords though, super-cool, but I again must point to this as evidence to those people I meet who insist ‘Phoenix Lords=Primarchs’ because they do not. It is sad, I wish they did, but they just don’t. At best their Chapter Masters and even that’s iffy since most named Chapter Masters could probably easily defeat the Phoenix Lords. Its sad considering each Phoenix Lord has more experience than any Primarch even, but apparently Aeldari just suck that much compared to humans.
Apparently Spiritseers aren’t even as powerful Psykers as Librarians, they are just as good as normal human Psykers. Yeah not realling seeing this ‘we are the best Psykers’ everyone keeps saying.
Banshees are cool, I dig the Exarch’s ability. I also think Iyanden Wraithlords might be pretty cool.
Then we get Warlord Traits, Craftworld Attributes, Stratagems and a whole bunch of technical stuff which I don’t feel qualified to comment on so I’ll stop here.
So yeah that’s the Codex in a nutshell. Not sure how I feel right now, certainly I’ll admit I actually expected more, but not sure of my overall feelings. I’ll digest it a bit and compare it to the list I made before to see where I stand and make a decision on whether bothering to continue later.
One thing that is just a fact, and does honestly disappoint me, is it is becoming clear that GW simply isn’t very willing to let any major Space Marine force ever be defeated in another faction’s codex, but are willing to let Space Marines beat other major factions (just discussing Asuryani alone in the 8th Edition Codices; Alaitoc (twice), Ulthwe and Iyanden have all already been beaten in the Fluff).

Video games that should get a reboot or sequel
I have made posts about TV shows that should be either be rebooted or get a sequel series so I thought I do one on videogames. This post goes into detail on the games so beware of spoilers.
I’ll start with reboots first.
Jak and Daxter- A popular game series made by Naughty Dog about a teen and his otter/weasel creature friend saving the world from great evil. The series at first was like an average platformer game but later got more dark and grim, which was interesting. There hasn’t been a new Jak and Daxter game since 2005 and since reboots are popular maybe they do it for the Jak and Daxter series.
Crash Bandicoot- Another popular game series by Naughty Dog about a mutated bandicoot that goes on adventures to save the day from the villain Dr. Neo Cortex. Its been confirmed that a company is releasing a N Sane trilogy, featuring updated versions of the games. Because of this I feel like the game company should reboot the series since if they have the time to redo 3 of the game then maybe they will do an actual reboot.
Conker Bad Fur Day- A game made by Rare about a squirrel named Conker who after getting drunk gets lost in an odd forest and goes on an adventure to get out and get to his girlfriends place. The game was know for its funny mature content, even though it was labeled a E rated game at the time but made it mark as an interesting game, even getting a revision for the Xbox. There were attempts to get the game a sequel but they never worked out, but in this day an age where reboots seem to be popular maybe they should do it for Conker’s Bad Fur Game.
Bully- A game made by Rockstar Games, the company who makes the GTA games. The game, as the title states, is about a teenage bully named Jimmy who after being dropped off at his new school (which takes place in the GTA universe) decides to become the leader of the school by fighting all the clicks of the school and uniting them under his leadership. The game though dated was fun and had a lot of similar elements from the GTA franchise. There was a remastered edition released in 2008 but I think a reboot of the game would be interesting, plus it a good change then getting another GTA game or GTA DLC.
Earthworm Jim- A game about a worm that after getting a suit fights evil. It had 2 good games but its fame was over after its game for the Nintendo 64, I think a reboot would be interesting to see.
Dragon’s Lair- a popular arcade game in the 80s that changed gaming in general. The series was so popular that it got several sequels and has been remade for several consoles. The series is so popular that the creator of the game did a Kickstarter in 2016 with the goal of it to make the game into a movie and it reached it goal, and is planning on coming out in 2018. Because of this maybe a company should make a reboot of the game, with new gameplay, an alternate plot and challenges.
Half Life franchise- A popular game series by Valve, about a theoretical physicist named Gordon Freeman who worked for the Black Mesa company when one day a test they were running, causes a rift to another dimension to open. Creatures come out and start to kill everyone causing Gordon to fight the creatures off and close the portal to the other dimension. He succeeds but a mysterious man comes out and tells him he will be needed again in the future. In the next game he awakes some time later to find that another alien species has taken over the Earth and has enslaved the Human race. Its Gordon’s role, with the help of some friends to take down the alien force, which they do but, through the events of Half Life 2 episodes 1 and 2 they will face the full force of the alien race. The goal from then one was for Gordon and his lady friend to head to the location of the lost ship from Aperture Science, cause Half Life is in the same universe as Portal. Fans have been waiting for a new installment to come out but nothing has been announced since 2007. I bet if Valve reboots the series, all the unanswered questions from the franchise can finally be answered.
Now for sequels
Alien vs. Predator (2010)- This was a ok game that consist of 3 stories that intertwined with each other. The game takes place on an alien planet where humans, led by and evil scientist are breeding xenomorphs, of course one escapes and goes on a rampage on the planet trying to get to its queen. To contact this the Marine come in to stop them but are slowly killed off, only for a Rookie to fight off the alien forces, which he does while at the same time trying to get off the planet with the survivors. The 3rd story is about the Predators species, where one is there to prove his worth as a warrior only to go on a mission to stop the humans form defiling there temple. After finding some items from a legendary predator he decides to destroy the temple so the humans, specifically the evil scientist from discovering their tech. All the stories end with the 3 characters you play going to the Xenomorph homeworld. Since then the people who made the game have been trying to get a sequel off the ground but there is no word of it as of yet.
I bet if they fixed the game mechanics a bit, the game can be better.
PlayStation All Star Battle Royale- This was the PlayStation’s version of Super Smash bros. where you play as popular PlayStation icons. The game got good ratings and there is rumor of a sequel coming in the future, which I hope does. If it does I can see it featuring a new villain and let you play as not only the characters from the previous games, but also new characters that weren’t in it.
Deadpool- A game made by High Moon studios about the popular superhero Deadpool going on a wacky adventure. In the game there is a hint that the game will get a sequel and with the popularity Deadpool has, it might/should happen in the near future.
Transformers franchise by High Moon Studios- Another game made by High Moon. I did a post that talks about why they should do another game, here is the link to see it: http://commentron.tumblr.com/post/147021053578/should-there-be-a-sequel-to-high-moons-studios
Dante’s Inferno- This game was made by the people who have made the Dead Space franchise. It was an alternate version of the poem of the same name where instead of Dante “touring” hell, he fights his way through it to save is beloved from Lucifer. Spoiler alert, he does and ends up in Purgatory but ends with a snake forming out of the weird cloth Dante had on his chest the whole time, hinting at a sequel. There had been rumors of a sequel but there is no word on if its true or not.
If they ever do make a sequel I have this idea that it features Dante gong up the mountain but as he gets farther up he notices that Purgatory is becoming a lot more like hell, which not only give the snake a role in the game but also spice up purgatory, cause the poem, though full of kinds of torture like in Inferno, aren’t as bad. Plus it states at the beginning of the actual poem that a snake is present only to be driven off by angels, so maybe the in the game the snake instead of being chased off possess one of the angel, leading Lucifer the opportunity to corrupt purgatory in order to get into Paradise.
Dead Space franchise- Dead Space is an action horror game that takes places in the distant future. You play as Isaac Clarke an engineer who after finding and destroying a Marker, a device that mutates anything near it into a multi limbed zombie like creatures, becomes a key target to a religious group who worship the Markers and those who sent them. Turns out the religious group made the Marker he destroyed and brainwash him to make them another one only to later destroy it. In the last game Dead Space 3, Isaac teams up with another guy and goes to a planet to discover that the Markers were sent by living moons, one is which above the planet there on. After a religious leader turned off the machine that kept the moon from attacking, Isaac and the other guy destroy it, only to discover that it sent a message to its brothers to attack Earth. The stories continues in a DLC that ended with the 2, after fighting about if they should return to Earth, head to Earth only to be on a collision with one of them. I believe Dead Space 4 should come out cause not only did Dead Space 3 make good sales but we also deserve a good ending for the franchise.
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed franchise- A game about Darth Vader’s secret apprentice who slowly turns to the light side of the force and throughout the 2 games uses his powers of both the light and dark side to fight the Empire. The 2nd game (at least its light ending) ended on a cliffhanger hinting to another sequel but sadly never came to be. I think with the release of the new Star Wars trilogy by Disney, the people who make the games should make a Force Unleashed III.
Sly 4- Sly 4 was a long awaited game for fans of the Sly Cooper Franchise, as it came out 8 years after Sly 3, though it was made by a different gaming company. For those who don’t know the series is about a Raccoon named Sly Cooper who along with his friends Bentley and Murray pulling off cappers together. In Sly 4, Sly and his gang had to travel through time to save Sly’s ancestors, which is a part of the games history, from a great evil. I won’t give away the entire ending but it did give a hint that there was/is going to be a Sly 5 in the future. So far there is no confirmation of a Sly 5 but the original makers have given their approval to the idea. I believe Sly 5 should be made so they can finally wrap up the series.
Lego Star Wars III: Clone Wars- Traveller’s Tales, or Tt has been making lego games of classic franchises for years, and will probably still do this for many years to come, though I am surprise that they never made a sequel game to the Lego Star War: Clone Wars game. The game was based on the 2008 Star Wars: Clone Wars show, as each level was based on an episode from the show, where you play through it as the characters from that episode. I’ve compared the ratings of this game to other games and it looks like it sold just as well as any other Lego game from Tt so I find it weird that they never made a sequel, especially when more then enough season to make a sequel. Maybe they’ll consider doing one after they make games of the other star wars movies that will come out, or maybe one that has episodes from Star Wars: Rebels in it.
Is there a game on this list that you agree with ? What games do you think should get a reboot or sequel ?

Dark Imperium
So I finally gave in. I jumped on the Warhammer 40k 8th edition bandwagon. It was faster and easier than I thought though. I still have some mixed feelings about it but overall I’m glad that I did it.
Games Workshop products are known for two things: 1) they probably are the best sculptures around with the finest details 2) they are insanely expensive. Notice I did not say overpriced 'cause you get what you pay for but still, they cost you an arm and a leg. This is the main reason that was holding me back from diving directly in. This and the fluff which I am not really sure I will ever be able to fully embrace. I mean, a fascist Roman empire in the far future? Duh...!
Anyway... how did I end up starting collecting Warhammer 40k do you ask? I was drinking a beer in Kobe Chinatown with my good board gamer friend when he described me a "Dark Imperium" unboxing he saw and how cool those miniatures looked. As a long-time tabletop wargamer, I knew what he was talking about and that’s probably why I was instantly sold. Also, why I should not decide to buy stuff when semi-drunk: the last thing I know is that I went back with a sense of urgency to scan the whole eBay for the cheapest Dark Imperium deal available. I found a pretty solid deal so I asked my friend how was he feeling about that and I got a weird and certainly unexpected answer: I’m going to London next week, I’ll take care of it. And he sure did. He came back to Japan with a big bag full of presents:
Dark Imperium starter box
1 extra rulebook
2 measuring tapes (GW original)
All for half the price you can get for just the starter box in this overpriced country. I have to admit, this was a great Christmas present.
Tumblr media
The miniatures
I am pretty sure you all know about the Dark Imperium contents but the other day when I was trying to get a full list of the miniatures in the box I wasn’t able to find one in the first Google search page so I’ll make one. Let’s see what you get in the Dark Imperium box.
Primaris Space Marines
1 Captain
2 Lieutenants
1 Ancient
10 Intercessors
3 Interceptors
5 Hellblasters
Death Guard
1 Lord of Contagion
1 Noxious Blightbringer
1 Malignant Plaguecaster
7 Plague Marins
1 Foetid Bloat-drone
20 Poxwalkers
You get a total of 53 miniatures which is probably a lot even if I feel like the rulebook covers a big portion of the cost. As usual with GW starter sets you also get unique characters and they probably add a lot of value to the box anyway.
All the miniatures you get are provided in the new GW scale which means they are 32 mm. Roughly. Of course, according to GW’s official take on the matter, the new Primaris marines were bred to be bigger and stronger than ever but this doesn’t explain why the dudes in the Death Guard grew accordingly. Maybe the power of Nurgle? Or the power of the new GW board members trying to drive new blood in the game? I don’t care: the new sculpts are exceptionally good. Like good good good... they look easy to paint with abundant but still fairly large details and with some reasonable color scheme suggestion that can make painting them a breeze, even for beginners. In twenty years I’ve seen miniatures from all the possible sources, old GW, Reaper, Fantasy Flight games, Megacon Games, etc. etc. and the level these new minis reached is amazing. I can imagine that painting them will be a lot of fun. Not to mention that this box contains a figure that is probably one of the best GW miniatures ever: the Lord of Contagion.
The factions
As you can see in the previous section, the two factions that come in the box are the Primaris Space Marines and the Death Guard. Splitting between two friends we had to decide which faction to go with but we both agreed it could be better for him to stick to the marines: first, he likes the looks best and second, they’re easier to paint for a beginner. So I got to pick up the Death guard because models are more complex and you may agree with me that they may represent a fair challenge even for an experienced painter.
Wandering around the internet to see the whole army points you get, I found this thread on Reddit where they did some calculations: like all GW starter sets, the good guys are slightly overpowered, with the Space Marines scoring around 100 points of overhead in respect to the Death Guard. I don’t mind losing games so I don’t care that much but I saw the very same thing in the Age of Sigmar starter set where the Stormcast are way more powerful than the Korne dudes. In addition to this issue, the total points seem to be pretty low (don’t even know on which base I am saying this but bear with me) so we both decided to add some extra units to pump up the fun a little bit: you don’t get a super-powerful army from a starter set. As far as I know, my friend bought some Reavers, a Librarian and a bunch of the Space Marine Heroes (Japan limited edition) so he now has something like 4 or 5 HQs to choose from together with some ranks. I will describe my additions in the details below.
The rulebook
The last time I had a full (physical) rulebook from Games Workshop was back in the days of Warhammer Fantasy Battles 4th edition. I also had two army books (one for my Lizardmen and one for my Dark Elves armies). All the books were that kind of softcover with the glue binding on the side. I’m not a librarian so I don’t know the appropriate term to describe them. On the contrary, the new 40k 8th edition rulebook is hardcover and packed full of gorgeous imagery and fluff. It reminds me the special edition of the Mercs 2.0 rulebook. As per new GW policy, they tend not to show you drawings or renderings but more dioramas with full armies on display: case in point, the AoS books with lots of army photography but almost no drawings. I guess this way the result turns out cheaper for them. The WH40k 8th edition book, however, is packed of full-page (kickass) drawings up to the level that it feels very much the same as the old-school GW manuals but with a more high-quality look and feel. In a couple words? Fucking awesome. It’s so good that I went through it a few times and I still have to get a glimpse at the rules. Enough said.
Death Guard reinforcements
As my friend started buying a lot of additional figures I had to do the same. I did it my way, though. As usual, the first addition I did was some crap I found on the eBay (almost) for free. The auction was for 5 old Plague Marines and 5 old Chaos Space Marines (all painted). The price was more than fair as they turned out around 1$ per unit. I wanted them as test models anyway. I also got 10 Tyranid gargoyles for the same price, so good deal overall.
Tumblr media
With such an ugly paint job, the idea was to strip them and make a tutorial out of the process, unfortunately, they were painted with some sort of metallic enamel and the paint did not fall off completely even after immersion in pure ethanol. I just primed on top of the old crappy colors and used them as test models. I had the insane idea to use pre-heresy Death Guard colors, a scheme that unfortunately involves a lot of white in the process and you all know how difficult is to paint a smooth white if you are not using an airbrush. So, God knows I needed some testing before hitting the road with the bigger new models. Talking about bigger models: the eBay dudes are 2nd edition figures so take a look what happens if you place them side by side with the new ones! I’m gonna call them my “baby plague marines” ‘cause they’re tiny!
Tumblr media
The big boy in the pic is another of the reinforcements I got (together with some Poxwalkers), just a normal “push fit” easy to build plague marine. Despite being of different size, they will probably work well together on the battlefield as my friend is not terribly WYSIWYG but the style is still quite different. I was however surprised to see how the new sculpts are a straight evolution from the old ones: they have very similar features and you effectively feel like you are painting the same faction. Even after twenty years. I guess that showcasing the same colors and being slightly loose on the weapons etc. will do it. You can see the color scheme I chose in the picture below.
Tumblr media
You have way more possibilities to get out some kickass effects on new models but the overall look-and-feel should be close to this one. It makes me feel good to see that even in this test stage it looks way better than the green metallic dude so I just cannot wait to paint my first new-era plague marine.
The last piece I bought is, again, another somewhat strange addition: Typhus. One of the named characters in the army. If you head to the GW page or Google for him, you can find many pictures and that’s exactly what I did. The only problem here is that the new sculpt looks super cartoonish and it’s simply not credible as a man-killing soulless machine. I do think the new sculpture is gorgeous, don’t take me wrong, but it doesn’t match the whole Death Guard look: I mean, he has smoke coming out with big mosquitoes and a Nurgling hugging him! Naah... I’ll pass on this sculpt. What do you guys think about him?
I still had to do something to add this dude to my army so I just headed to the Forgeworld page and grabbed the Horus Heresy special edition Character.
Tumblr media
Oooh, yeah! Now we’re talking. This is what I call “Death Guard” look! Even for WYSIWYG purposes, he counts exactly as his future-self but with that badass factor that blows my mind. They also cost exactly the same amount of money so this one was a no-brainer: I pulled the trigger in the fraction of a second and the model is now flying over Russia, eastbound. Cannot wait to put my hands on him!
Ok, I wrote enough words on this. It’s time to get some paint flowing and see what I can do with a new model and my pre-heresy color scheme. I can already see a step-by-step tutorial coming in the future on how to paint Death Guard in these colors. You guys let me know what you think and stay tuned for the updates!
... game on!

2nd Friday Issue #2 2017
Food, Glorious Food! There are two new things I’ve tried over the past few weeks, and I can’t believe I’ve gone this long without doing them sooner. Both of these require a little prep and then a “set it and forget it” method.
First up, making my own beef jerky. We’ve had a food dehydrator for some time. And have used it for making banana chips, apple chips, ‘sun’ dried tomatoes, and drying herbs from our garden.
What I hadn’t done until this past weekend was make my own jerky. Turns out this is extremely easy to do. Basically you can take a cut a meat, trim off fat (reduces spoilage), slice it thin and then marinate it before placing it onto the dehydrator for a few hours (for me 5 hours did the trick).
For me I started basically with a simple Worchester and Soy marinade, keeping it simple to start before going for more creative flavors. It came out great — and I didn’t worry about a great cut of meat.
The other method I discovered is for making caramelized onions. We use them for all kinds of dishes that we make. I’ve made them on the stove top with my cast iron. Whether small or large batch, to do it right just takes time to get there. I’ve found a great new way to cheat. It takes longer time overall, but requires gobs less work on your part.
They key is using your slow cooker (in my case it’s a combo slow cooker, pressure cooker, but I use the slow cooker low setting). Slice the onions, season and oil the same way you normally would. Instead of putting them on the stove, put them in the slow cooker and let them go on low for a few hours. The recipes I had seen online talked about having to do it for 10 hours. For me, it took only 5 hours to do get them to a state I liked. If you want, towards the end, the last hour or so remove the lid to help reduce some of the liquid.
I’ll need to do this again to dialed in on the time. For me, my slow/pressure cooker has a ‘brown’ function which I used (accidentally) when prepping this the first time. And it likely gave my onions a bit of a head start. Overall, you just put them in and walk away, checking on them every few hours.
This is the way I’m going to do onions for the rest of my life. Two methods I just can’t believe I haven’t tried already! OneNote vs. Evernote For business use, I’ve been a OneNote user for years. It is my go-to note taking for use in my business life. For personal electronic note taking, I’ve used various solutions over the years — starting with Lotus Notes Organizer, a great personal organizer for its time! I have even played with early incarnations of tablets an e-ink, such as the NEC Windows Tablet. The NEC device was a good idea, but was just ahead of what technology could deliver at the time in terms of experience.
Part of my issue with pen devices for notetaking is that my handwriting is just downright atrocious. Whether electronic or on paper, having to take notes by hand — and being readable by me or anyone else in the future — is a challenge. The keyboard is very much my friend! [And as always, credit to my mother for having me take a keyboarding class in high school so I can type with some speed and efficiency.]
Note: While there may be many non-Microsoft centric organizations in the world, for me Windows as the corporate desktop device — tablet or laptop — has always been the case and will be that way for the foreseeable future. That being the case, there really isn’t any other tool for my corporate use besides OneNote for note taking electronically. So the focus here is personal use and not meant to be an exhaustive review of electronic notebook tools in the market place.
Personally I’ve been using Evernote for a few years now. That product has been the right price (free!) with the right level of convenience (web clipper to grab articles and available on all my devices). And it has been pretty solid for my personal use. There are features I like about both tools, and features in both which annoy me.
With my use of my Windows Surface, I opted to get an Office 365 subscription last year. Mainly for the storage, but also for access to Office features, Groove and other features, in party tying into Xbox also. Recently I figured I would give OneNote more of a try for personal use (the main driver was I finally got my Surface fixed and was back to using that full-time).
Rather than start from scratch, I used the import tool from Microsoft which allowed me to import my years of notes from Evernote right into OneNote. That worked really well and pulled in all the data seamlessly. You even have a few options on how to import.
After the import, one thing became apparent. In Evernote I was more ‘notebook’ organized and had way more notebooks. In OneNote I tend to be more ‘section’ than notebook focused, so having so many notebooks is a bit different — and I don’t know that I like that.
With the number of notebooks in OneNote to get them on your machine you have to open each one, until you do it is not there and not synced. Whereas in Evernote they are all there and available. I’ve also seen some instability in OneNote, I think might be due to the number of notebooks. I’ll have to do more testing with the application to confirm.
From a formatting perspective, OneNote has always done a bit better than Evernote with straight copy and paste from a web page. Though with the WebClipper add-in for Evernote, it helps to really overcome that issue. Formatting in Evernote has always been one item that has bugged me. I don’t do a lot of formatting, since this is for notes and not published documents. But Evernote is overall weaker, especially in its table controls.
Evernote has better control or use of additional metadata, like #tags and the ability to see and edit metadata like modified date and time, or source URL. OneNote does not really make use of tags at all (other than on import as a provision for a way to import your data). And getting to that data is OneNote is a lot harder.
One area which Evernote handles better is sorting of notes by modified and created date. While I like how it keeps notes at the top based on edit date, I have had to do some work when wanting to have notes put in chronological order by created date. It would be nice if Evernote supported the ability to pick either created or modified and not just assume modified. Mainly for notebooks — like a journal — which are typically handled chronologically. But in OneNote, it’s a bit harder to manage and order notes that way (especially if you wanted to go and put pages in that are older).
Overall I think I’ll probably stay moving forward with OneNote and may ditch Evernote, but it will take some more time and burn in to see where I stand. I haven’t had a chance to test the web clipping actions for OneNote and I think any tool like this take some time to really kick the tires.
OneDrive and Dropbox make it easier to manage data organization which is shared, but Google Drive doesn’t. I work on our local PTA organization and they leverage Google Drive for document sharing. Overall, hot mess would be an understatement for collaboration on that data.
While moving to bundle more services into file storage there needs to be an improvement in controls provided by these services around shared or collaborative information.
Two key areas these services should improve are improved data control and integration across services. For improved data control, there needs to be more granular controls and notification on when data is changed and what people can change. Overall for collaboration you need versioning and also the ability to limit who can delete data. This is especially important when you have people who are not very technical that are leveraging a service which is backed by corporate enterprise support services.
The other area of improvement is in integration across these services. Dropbox, Box, Google, Microsoft, Amazon has my data strewn throughout them in different ways. There is no way for me to manage my data centrally to know where and how this is all stored. Even if I settled on one service for all my data, I still need to interact with groups who may chose to use different services for collaboration.
I am technical, and I find it hard to manage and get to my data across services. Those who aren’t as technical struggle even more — and are more apt to make mistakes like deleting a lot of data, not realizing the impact of their actions. If these providers plan to grow their consumer, company based business they need to move forward more quickly to the level of service corporate enterprises have had for some time. A wishl ist feature for me would be to have a client on my computer which provides access to these online file services as more of a “mapped drive” so that I could see and interact with the data like a file system, but not actually replicate it down to my computer, unless I want to have that data offline. I have access to more data through these services then I have space for on my computer. But they all function in the same way, replicate the data down to your computer. Converged Services One of things which brought me back to trying OneNote for personal use was changes to a number of different cloud based services. Evernote has dialed back its free services considerably, limiting the number of devices you have use at any one time. Dropbox and other services have slowly folded features into its premium services away from its free tiers. Bigger companies like Google, Amazon and Microsoft have followed suit. And they have to, no one can sustain a ‘free’ business model.
The technology landscape is littered with companies that have good or great ideas but an unsustainable business plan.
It may be a way to start and build a base and demand for your idea, but you eventually have to move into some form of charging for your services. I’ve been using various file services for a while (mainly Dropbox, somewhat with Google drive, and more recently OneDrive). I pay for all three services, in varying degrees. I also leverage note taking (Evernote and OneNote), online ‘office’ components — word, excel, etc… (via Google and Microsoft) and time management (Cozi). The main drivers for me is not so much collaboration, but more for making sure my key data is backed up. At least until recently. With some of the collaboration I do is on our EAC (Environmental Advisory Committee) and that has been via email and Dropbox. Its been in place for a number of years, having taken the data provided by the previous chair and moving it there so that everyone on the committee could have access and add to the data. It has worked well, but relied on the assumption of people not doing dumb things. Which has worked well for several years. But these are people who are not technical in nature (at least not with computers). So I’ve had problems a few times where someone deleted something and I had to go in and undelete the files and put them back.
Dropbox keeps deleted data for 30 days. Which seems like a reasonable period of time. But if your organization decides to take off the months of December and January from meeting, you can easily go 30 days without looking at what is stored out there. And Dropbox failed to notify me that data was changed — deleted in this case — wholesale from the shared EAC folder. We’ve now lost several years’ worth of article history. I can get some of the data back through emails and such, but it’s a painful process.
While my data is backed up to a degree, it is also dispersed across multiple services with varying levels of protection and controls. Onetastic — OneNote Add-In As part of my foray into using OneNote for personal use again, I stumbled across this add-in for OneNote. This add-in is likely going to be the thing which pushes me over the edge into full-blown OneNote use personally. I’ve been using it for work and personal use. It works on OneNote 2010 and higher versions. It basically offers macro based ability to add features into OneNote to take all kinds of actions. I don’t know how long this has been available, but so far I am finding it friggin’ awesome.
There are hundreds of macros already built that you can pull down. Or you can write your own. It is easy to inspect any macro to see what it does, so you can take an existing one and build from that and not just from scratch. I’ve used a few such as page sorting, calendar creation, table of contents. One of the other great functions with the add-in is the calendar view. It allows you to pull up a calendar and lists out all the notes based on when they are created. So if you need to look for something from a specific day, it gives you a very easy way to do that.
