Paul Greets the Corinthians
(1 Corinthians 1:1-3)
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in the whole of Achaia:
2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
The God of All Comfort
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforteth us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort them that are in any affliction, through the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. 5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound unto us, even so our comfort also aboundeth through Christ. 6 But whether we be afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; or whether we be comforted, it is for your comfort, which worketh in the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: 7 and our hope for you is stedfast; knowing that, as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so also are ye of the comfort.
8 For we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning our affliction which befell us in Asia, that we were weighed down exceedingly, beyond our power, insomuch that we despaired even of life: 9 yea, we ourselves have had the answer of death within ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: 10 who delivered us out of so great a death, and will deliver: on whom we have set our hope that he will also still deliver us; 11 ye also helping together on our behalf by your supplication; that, for the gift bestowed upon us by means of many, thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf.
Paul's Change of Plans
12 For our glorying is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and sincerity of God, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God, we behaved ourselves in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward. 13 For we write none other things unto you, than what ye read or even acknowledge, and I hope ye will acknowledge unto the end: 14 as also ye did acknowledge us in part, that we are your glorying, even as ye also are ours, in the day of our Lord Jesus.
15 And in this confidence I was minded to come before unto you, that ye might have a second benefit; 16 and by you to pass into Macedonia, and again from Macedonia to come unto you, and of you to be set forward on my journey unto Judaea. 17 When I therefore was thus minded, did I shew fickleness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be the yea yea and the nay nay? 18 But as God is faithful, our word toward you is not yea and nay. 19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timothy, was not yea and nay, but in him is yea. 20 For how many soever be the promises of God, in him is the yea: wherefore also through him is the Amen, unto the glory of God through us. 21 Now he that stablisheth us with you in Christ, and anointed us, is God; 22 who also sealed us, and gave us the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

8 Οὐ γὰρ θέλομεν ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν, ἀδελφοί, ὑπὲρ τῆς θλίψεως ἡμῶν τῆς γενομένης ἐν τῇ Ἀσίᾳ, ὅτι καθʼ ὑπερβολὴν ὑπὲρ δύναμιν ἐβαρήθημεν ὥστε ἐξαπορηθῆναι ἡμᾶς καὶ τοῦ ζῆν· 9 ἀλλʼ αὐτοὶ ἐν ἑαυτοῖς τὸ ἀπόκριμα τοῦ θανάτου ἐσχήκαμεν, ἵνα μὴ πεποιθότες ὦμεν ἐφʼ ἑαυτοῖς ἀλλʼ ἐπὶ τῷ θεῷ τῷ ἐγείροντι τοὺς νεκρούς· 
My translation: 
8 For we do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning our pressure having happened in Asia, that according to excess we were weighed down beyond strength, so that we despaired even of living; 9 but in us ourselves we have had the verdict of death, in order that we might not be trusting in ourselves but in God, the one raising the dead ones;

The negated present οὐ θέλομεν (from θέλω) is complemented by the present infinitive ἀγνοεῖν (from ἀγνοέω “I am ignorant, unaware”). ὑμᾶς is the accusative subject of the infinitive (“we do not want you to be unaware”, NASB, ESV, HCSB, NET; NIV: “... uniformed”). 
ἀδελφοί is vocative. 
The preposition ὑπὲρ with τῆς θλίψεως (“affliction”; cf v. 4) means, “about, concerning”. ἡμῶν is an objective genitive. The aorist participle τῆς γενομένης (from γίνομαι) is attributive with τῆς θλίψεως (“our afflictions which took place/happened”). The participle is modified by the locative prepositional phrase ἐν τῇ Ἀσίᾳ, referring to Asia minor. 
ὅτι can be seen as epexegetical of τῆς θλίψεως, or introducing content after ἀγνοέω. 
ἡ ὑπερβολή (8x, 5 of which in 2 Cor.) is, “excess, extraordinary quality/character” (BDAG), from ὑπερβάλλω (5x) “I surpass, exceed”. The prepositional phrase καθʼ ὑπερβολὴν, literally “according to excess”, modifies the verb βαρέω below; NASB, NET: “excessively”. 
The preposition ὑπὲρ with δύναμιν is spatial (“above/beyond our strength”), and also modifies βαρέω below. Alternatively, it is possible that καθʼ ὑπερβολὴν above modifies ὑπὲρ δύναμιν here (“exceedingly above our strength”, CGT). 
βαρέω (6x) is, “I weigh down, burden” (BDAG), from βαρύς (6x) “heavy, weighty” (cf. τό βάρος, 6x, “weight, burden”; βαρέως, 2x, “heavily”; English barometric pressure). ἐβαρήθημεν is an aorist passive (“we were burdened”, NASB, NET; NIV: “We were under great pressure”; NRSV: “we were ... crushed”). 
ἐξαπορέω (2x, both in 2 Cor.) is, “I despair” (most translations), an intensified form of ἀπορέω (6x) “I am at a loss, uncertain”; the verb literally refers to the total unavailability of an exit (NIGTC). The verb is only passive/deponent in our literature (BDAG). The conjunction ὥστε with the aorist passive infinitive ἐξαπορηθῆναι indicates result. ἡμᾶς is the accusative subject of the infinitive. καὶ is ascentive (“even”). After the verb ���ξαπορέω, the genitive indicates ‘that in respect to which this occurs’ (BDAG), here the articular present infinitive τοῦ ζῆν (from ζάω), equivalent to an English gerund (“we despaired even of living”, NET; NRSV, NIV: “... life itself”).

EGGNT says that ἀλλά here is ‘rhetorically ascentive’ (“indeed”, most translations), although it could be taken to indicate the contrast with ἀγνοέω above (“We do not want you to be ignorant; rather, here’s what happened ...”). 
The pronoun αὐτοὶ here intensifies the phrase ἐν ἑαυτοῖς, a classical construction that is rare in the NT (EGGNT); however, the emphatic phrase is difficult to render in English (HCSB does the best with: “we personally had a death sentence within ourselves”), and most translations actually makes it less emphatic, often omitting the phrase entirely. The phrase modifies the main verb ἔχω below, and probably is meant to indicate that τό ἀπόκριμα below is non-literal. 
τό ἀπόκριμα is a hapax legomenon (occurring only once in the NT); its meaning here is an ongoing debate by commentators. It is cognate to ἀποκρίνομαι (“I answer”), and so it could simply mean “an answer” (presumably from God), although most translations take it with a judicial sense of “a sentence, verdict”. τὸ ἀπόκριμα is modified by genitive τοῦ θανάτου which is epexegetic (“the sentence — death”). τὸ ἀπόκριμα is the direct object of the perfect ἐσχήκαμεν (from ἔχω). The perfect-tense is vivid, indicating a past event with present effect, although some commentators take the perfect here as aoristic. 
ἵνα + subjunctive indicates purpose.  The negated perfect participle μὴ πεποιθότες (from πείθω, here “I trust”; NRSV, NIV: “rely”) forms a periphrastic construction with the present subjunctive ὦμεν (from εἰμί); ‘The perfect tense of the transitive verb πείθω is intransitive and has a present meaning: “I trust in, put my confidence in”’ (NIGTC). The dative prepositional phrases ἐφʼ ἑαυτοῖς and ἐπὶ τῷ θεῷ indicates the basis of the trust. The present participle τῷ ἐγείροντι (from ἐγείρω) is attributive with τῷ θεῷ; the present-tense is gnomic (“God who raises the dead”, most translations). The substantival adjective τοὺς νεκρούς (lit. “the dead ones) is the direct object of ἐγείρω.

Seriously, we tend to assume only a non-believer has this problem—as it seems how can the SPIRIT #indwell a person who is also #possessed..

Been a while since i've written for this au! But here's a drabble going off of this post for Corinthian Bros.
“Please don’t cry”
The plea sat heavy on the Corinthian's tounges, sliding down his throat and catching, like a clot congealing blood he couldn't dislodge. The memory of the last time he'd begged--that long ago night in Berlin-- rose up and added to the sour taste of despair curdling within him. He wanted to wash it out with the sharp sweet tang of fury and defiance.
But that defiance was precisely what had gotten them both here in the first place.
“I’m sor-sorry,”  The Kid choked out, wiping furiously at the red tracts streaking down his face, the bloody smears making his shaking form look even more undone.
“ Don’t be sorry either” The Corinthian said, sliding through the nothingness they'd been placed in over to where the Kid sat, curling into himself as though that would keep his sobs locked down, unable to escape.
Just like them. 
The Corinthian reached his arms around the Kid's shoulders and pulled him close, tucking the blonde head under his chin, feeling the tremors of his younger counterpart rattleing his smaller frame, and squeezing him tight as if the embrace might help settle them.
(If anyone had told him a year ago he'd be trying to comfort his replacement while they both faced almost certain Unmaking--well that person would have ended up like all the rest of his victims he supposed. Only much faster and with a lot less "messing around" beforehand.) 
“Nothin’ to be sorry for, I was the one who got us into this mess”
But the Kid shook his head at this, pushing away slightly to look up at the Corinthian, eyes still red and shiny with bloody tears barely held at bay. 
"I was the one who messed up, if I had just been better at—”
“It’s not your fault Kid, alright?" He said sharply, regretting the bite in his tone as he saw the Kid flinch. He pulled the young nightmare close again and went on, softer now, but determined to make him understand.
"It’s mine. I should’ve known better than to provoke his high and mightyness by trying to cut and run again, especially after he laid out pretty explicitly what would happen if I did. ”
Not that he'd ever had any idea of actually obeying Dream's instructions to stay out of the Waking World. He'd just hadn't planned on his escape attempt being made so soon, or having it hinge on trying to keep the Kid clear of the results of Dream's displeasure.
Of course his efforts had thrown them both right into the thick of that. 
Maybe he really was poorly made. He'd screwed things up for both of them. Both by getting caught and by…by not teaching the Kid well enough to take his place. 
"I will admit the new Corinthian has not filled his role as I'd wished. Some adjustments may need to be made as such…"
He'd know what that meant, and he wasn't about to let the Kid get unmade, not if he could help it. He'd made a b-line to the Waking as soon as he'd overheard Dream expressing his disappointment. 
( Maybe there was just something wrong with the whole design of him, The Corinthian, that had poisoned the chances of the Kid before he'd even tried.  Maybe they'd both been doomed from the start.) 
“What’s gonna happen now?”
The Kid's whispered question pulled him from his despairing reverie. He hoped she was getting her money's worth at least. 
“ I dunno” He admitted.
Another stifled sob. Another quick squeeze of the shoulders.
“ I’m gonna make sure nothin’ happens to you though, you're gonna be ok" 
It felt like an empty promise, in this empty place between existence and annihilation. But he'd do his best to keep it. He owed the Kid that much. 
"But he was so angry," The Kid choked out, shuddering at the memory of the Lord of Nightmare's fury when he found them trying to flee. Well, when he'd found the Corinthian trying to pull an-- even then-- still reluctant to disobey Kid after him. 
"Once more you seek to undermine me Corinthian?! After against my better judgment, I granted you mercy, a chance to keep your place in existence, and yet you still seek to set yourself against my will?" 
Dream had held both their fates literally in the palm of his hand, and when the Corinthian had tried to stab that hand once again--never mind how well it had or hadn't worked last time--Dream had simply cupped his other great hand over them, like trapping a pair of insects, and they'd found themselves here, in limbo, awaiting their lord's decision. 
"He's angry at me, not you"  The Corinthian said, praying it was true. 
"But you were trying to help me! "  The Kid cried, piercing directly into the heart of the argument with all the skill his function invoked.
 "I've lost you your second chance! I took your place and I wasn't even good at it and I-I've ruined your life--"
The Corinthian seized the Kid's shoulders, hauling him up so that they were staring face to face, eye-teeth to eye-teeth. 
"You're the best thing that ever happened to my life!"  
The Corinthian's voice was a rumbling growl, echoing around the emptiness as he pushed every ounce of conviction he had into that admittance. 
"And no matter what happens next, I don't regret a minute of having you in it, ok?" 
He gave the Kid a small shake, trying to push the understanding of just how much he meant his words into him. "Ok?" 
" E-even when I accidentally stabbed you during practice?"  The Kid rasped half a laugh escaping from him despite his efforts to hold it down.
It was a pale reflection of the Kid's usual deflecting snark, but it was more like him than he'd been in the hours, days, since they'd been sent here, and the Corinthian couldn't help but grin back. 
"That was an accident?" He said, feigning disappointment, "And here I was thinking you'd actually managed to get one up on me" 
The Kid gave him an indignant smack on the arm, the Corinthian faked returning a cuff to the ear, and then the Kid was in his arms again. Not crying anymore, but holding onto him like a lifeline, face pressed into his chest, fingers gripping his jacket till the knuckles went white. The Corinthian held him back just as tightly. 
"No matter what happens kiddo, we'll be together, I promise" 
Then the sky split open.
Light flooded into the darkness, blinding them both with its intensity. When their sight returned, they were kneeling at the bottom of the stairs, in the throne room of the palace, and Dream himself was standing above them.
"Let us begin"

21 ὁ δὲ βεβαιῶν ἡμᾶς σὺν ὑμῖν εἰς Χριστὸν καὶ χρίσας ἡμᾶς θεός, 22 ὁ καὶ σφραγισάμενος ἡμᾶς καὶ δοὺς τὸν ἀρραβῶνα τοῦ πνεύματος ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ἡμῶν. 
My translation: 
21 And the one making us firm with you unto the Anointed and having anointed us is God, 22 the one having also sealed us and given us the pledge of the Breath in our hearts. 
Notes:
1:21 
βεβαιόω (8x) is literally, “I make firm”; figuratively, “I establish, strengthen” (BDAG); cf. βέβαιος “firm” in verse 7. NIGTC suggests the use of the term here may reflect its legal usage, denoting ‘legally guaranteed security’, i.e., ‘God is constantly engaged in strengthening or confirming believers in their relationship to Christ’. The direct object of the substantival present participle ὁ βεβαιῶν is ἡμᾶς. The participle is modified by the associative prepositional phrase σὺν ὑμῖν; the phrase seems to imply a reciprocal relationship in the strengthening (so NET: “establishes us together with you”), which is not brought out in most translations (e.g., NRSV, NASB: “establishes us with you”). EGGNT classifies the prepositional phrase εἰς Χριστὸν as referential (“with respect/reference to”). Most translations simply take the phrase as equivalent to ἐν Χριστῷ, “in Christ”; NIGTC notes, however, that ‘although εἰς and ἐν share some common territory in Hellenistic Greek, Paul is not prone to confuse them.’ The present-tense of the participle suggests an ongoing strengthening by God. 
χρίω (5x) is, “I anoint [with oil]”, although in the NT the term is only used figuratively of anointing with the Holy Spirit and/or ‘consecration to divine service’ (NIGTC); cf. ὁ Χριστός “the anointed one”. Given the reference to the Spirit in the next verse, anointing with the Spirit may be implicit here. The article ὁ above also governs the aorist participle χρίσας (“He who strengthens us ... and anointed us”). The aorist-tense of χρίσας probably refers to the individual moment of salvation or baptism. ἡμᾶς is the direct object of the participle; most commentators take the pronoun here to be inclusive of Paul and his readers, as it is in the entirety of verses 21–22. 
θεός is the predicate of an implied ἐστιν, of which ὁ βεβαιῶν ... καὶ χρίσας is the subject. 
1:22 
καὶ introduces a second pair of substantival participles which modifies θεός (v. 21) in the third attributive position. 
σφραγίζω (15x) is, “I seal” (BDAG), from ἡ σφραγίς (16x) “seal”. The verb is used here figuratively to indicate ‘divine ownership and protection’ (ICC); ‘ownership ... authentication ... and security’ (NIGTC). NASB, HCSB, NET: “sealed us”; NIV: “set his seal of ownership on us”. The direct object of the substantival aorist middle participle ὁ σφραγισάμενος is ἡμᾶς. Only here and Romans 15:28 is this verb middle; the meaning appears to be similar, and so here the middle-voice may emphasize God’s self-interest. Ephesians 1:13 mentions being sealed “by the Spirit”; given the reference to the Spirit in the second participial phrase below, that idea may be implicit here. 
The article ὁ above also governs the aorist participle δοὺς (from δίδωμι; “He who sealed us ... and gave us”). The aorist-tense of both participles indicates antecedent action. The unexpressed direct object of the participle is ἡμᾶς. 
ὁ ἀρραβών (3x, 2 of which in 2 Cor.) is, “deposit, down payment, pledge” (BDAG). It is a Hebrew loan-word, from עֲרָבוֹן; ESV: “guarantee”; NIV: “a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come”. τὸν ἀρραβῶνα is the direct object of δίδωμι above. The genitive τοῦ πνεύματος could be appositional (“the down-payment, namely, the Spirit”), in which case the Spirit is either the foretaste or the guarantee of the blessings of the next age, or it could be partitive (“the first part of the Spirit”), in which case the Spirit given to us now is only a small portion of the Spirit we will have in the next age. Most translations take it as appositional, as shown by the fact that most reverse the order of the nouns so that “Spirit” is the direct object of the verb (“gave us the Spirit as a pledge” rather than “gave us the pledge of the Spirit”). The locative prepositional phrase ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις indicates the destination of the given Spirit; ἐν is effectively equivalent to εἰς. ἡμῶν is a possessive genitive.
