#10/10 best Slade Wilson to date
Text
being a Slade stan sucks because I can’t even really engage in any sort of discourse with those who despise his character as a whole. Deathstroke is such an over utilized character throughout all of DC media, that you can genuinely find over one hundred completely different canon interpretations of him, and most of them are extremely flat, one dimensional takes. As in, not only is he written as an absolute dirtbag, but he’s written as a BORING dirtbag. Because I can get behind a dirtbag character so long as they have interesting motives and a fleshed out philosophy, but Deathstroke is almost always used as a generic foil to a straightforward plot where the complexity of the villain isn’t even taken into account. So like, yeah. I get it when people think he’s an overhyped villain.
But like, the original Deathstroke? Like, the Slade Wilson from the 80s Titans and his first solo run in the 90s?? He was a good character. A good villain. He was a genuinely complicated individual whose morals withered away bit by bit and morphed him into this heinous, scumbag of a man for reasons that made sense? And I feel like when you say that, everyone automatically wants to go “that doesn’t make him sympathetic, blah blah blah” but that’s not what I’m saying? It made sense why he became what he is, you could see the trajectory. And for me that’s what makes a good villain and I kinda wish DC would stop using him as a stand in

Chapter Ten: Sick Day (Conner's POV)
I woke up sweating, draping an arm over my forehead. I saw Bart stumble out of bed from the corner of my eye, leaning forward with his face in his hands. I couldn’t speak to him even if I wanted to. I watched as he turned the fan up. I tossed my blankets aside, wiping the sweat from my brow. The room was pitch black, save for a glow-in-the-dark painting Bart hung on his side of the room. Someone knocked on the door, and I glanced at Bart. “I turned the fan on… You can get the door,” Bart mumbled. I flipped him off while leaving my bed and let Cassie in. She entered our room in a jacket and sweats.
“Who turned the AC on?” Cassie asked. “It’s freezing.”
“I feel like shit,” Bart muttered.
“Are you guys sick?” Cassie questioned. She pulled her shirt over her mouth and nose.
I got out of bed and passed Cassie to use the bathroom. I got dizzy and placed a steadying hand on the wall while I used the bathroom. “Conner, we gotta turn the AC off,” Cissie requested through the door.
“Okay. Hey, Cissie? Can you put two cups of ice in our room?”I asked.
“I can do that… What’s going on with you and Bart?” Cissie questioned. I flushed and washed my hands. I opened the door while I watched Cissie return with the ice.
“Something about our childhood came up… It’s not important—.”
“Hmm… It is, though. You’ve been at each other’s throats for weeks now. And you were so excited to share a room—.” I took the cups from her and headed to the bedroom.
“Don’t worry about it,” I interrupted. I gave Bart a cup and I lay in bed, chewing the ice before pouring my water into the cup. I took an Advil and went to bed. I woke up because I didn’t feel right in my chest. I opened my eyes.
Bart lay staring at me, trembling in the cold. “Can I come over there or was I stupid for asking?”I questioned.
“Please… I can’t get warm,” Bart whispered. I got out of bed and climbed over Bart, wrapping an arm around him. I moved his bangs from his forehead as he shook.
“Shhh… I got you. I got you,” I whispered as a single tear slid down my cheek.
“Conner? What’s wrong?” Bart asked. He didn’t have to look at me to know. I pulled him closer.
“My heart felt funny, but I’m okay,” I whispered.
Bart held onto my arm. “I’m sorry… Conner, I’m so sorry. Please don’t be mad at me anymore,” Bart whimpered.
I smiled, pressing my forehead to his neck. “Okay… But only because I miss my best friend,” I confessed. I could feel him smiling at that. “I’m not even—. I wanted you to believe me.”
“I’m willing to compromise. If you see him again, I’ll believe you. I know you won’t lie just to prove a point,” Bart suggested. I smiled against his neck and nodded. “How’s Reed?”
“He’s good,” I replied.
“Are you gonna take him to the homecoming thingie?” Bart asked.
“Oh—. No, we’re not—. We’re not dating, Bart. Reed and I are just—. We’re hooking up. It’s noncommittal. I’m not looking for anything serious right now,” I replied. Bart turned to me, and my breath caught.
“Why are you so scared of commitment?” Bart questioned. “Reed’s nice. I think he—. He cares about you.”
“I care about him, too… But Bart, I’m not sure we have anything going for us outside of the physical stuff. What about you? I thought you were seeing some girl from your hometown?” I asked. I needed to take the heat off of myself.
“Carol is—. I—. We haven’t talked since we slept together—.”
“You and Carol fucked?” I whispered loudly. Bart covered my mouth.
“Shut up. Shut up,” Bart whispered, “I blew it. I know I did. Carol said she’d be busy for a while, and we haven’t spoken since. It was terrible.”
“It was bad?” I questioned. “What do you mean? What happened?”
“Not much. I was in my head, and I—.” Bart shook his head and turned away from me.
“Hey… I’m not making fun of you. Did I ever tell you about the time I tried bondage with a girl in Smallville?”I asked. Bart sat up and looked at me. “She tied me to her headboard, but she couldn’t get me loose, so I’m laying there like—. Like this.” I held my hands together above my head. “And she tried to cut me loose with scissors, but she cut my hand on accident, and she had work, so she left me there and her friend had to come and cut me loose.
“But he was about thirty minutes out, so I had to sit there with my arms above my head watching X-Files wearing nothing but a blanket. So, he gets there halfway through the episode and he’s laughing while he’s sawing me loose with a knife. And I’m mortified because he had to practically straddle me—.” Bart giggled.
“Tell me you didn’t,” Bart whispered. I nodded before covering my face.
“He was cool about it, but I never spoke to either of them again after that,” I replied.
“I said someone else’s—.”
“Bart, no,” I whispered. Bart nodded. “But you’ve—. Never mind. Bart, which movie did you watch all four this week?”
“No. I watched Desert Hearts and Lilies,” Bart replied, “Did you watch all four?”
“Yeah. I wanna—. I wanna make something that feels like one of those movies… Like I think I’m gonna write about desire and self-denial,” I replied. Bart propped himself up on his elbow and smiled as I rambled. “I’m talking too much, huh?”
“Yeah,” Bart nodded. “But I wanna know one thing. What are you talking to my mom about?”
I ran a hand over my face and lay on my back. “I love your mom. She’s great. I like to throw ideas at her sometimes. Mel’s awesome. She called me yesterday to talk about her friend she met at the school,” I replied.
“Did she send you pictures of them hanging out in the breakroom?”Bart smiled.
“Yeah, your mom is so cute. I love that she’s just some adorable woman in her thirties and her seventy-year-old best friend. Also, why is she so good at taking pictures?” I asked.
“Oh, yeah. Thad is teaching her,” Bart replied. He covered his mouth and yawned.
“I can’t smell anything. My nose is stuffed,” I whispered.
“It’s rude,” Bart mumbled as he shut his eyes. “Thanks for cuddling up. And thanks for not taking our stuff out on my mom.”
I nodded, wrapping my arms around him as I shut my eyes. “I don’t care how mad I get, I’ll never turn down sleeping in your bed. You’ve got the softest blankets,” I whispered. Bart didn’t answer. His chest steadily rose and fell. I fell into a deep sleep immediately after. I woke up once to Cissie changing out our ice cups, but she didn’t see me. I wondered what she thought. It didn’t change anything because Bart hadn’t changed his mind, and I didn’t want to convince him. Still, it felt good having him close again.

rating jason todd ships like people rate random emojis
Jaytemis (Jason/Artemis)
Depending on who writes it, it is a god tier ship with unlimited possibilities or an awkward forced ship written by men who no one wants for good reasons. jason braids her hair and will read classics to her in like ancient greek or something. the absurdly hot punk couple that always look distinctly unimpressed. matching eyebrow raises and sighs. only soft with each other. biting comments softened with a slight smile and soft eyes. kisses on the forehead and arms wrapped around waists. 11/10
Jayrose (Jason/Rose Wilson)
Probably my favorite canon ship for Jason ngl. They commit crimes on dates nights, steal from the rich, spice up things with a little arson. Absolutely best friends. Jason would be Rose's trophy malewife. Has dinner ready when she comes home. its unknown whether bruce or slade hate this relationship more. damian loves her and thats so rare the rest of the siblings follow his lead and agree on the relationship 10/10
Jayroy (Jason/Roy Harper)
Top tier Jason ship. The best one out there. Idiots to lovers. Also has the appeal of in-laws hating each other. Canon parents. Instead of their fathers walking them down the aisle, their mothers did. helping each other heal. lazy mornings in bed. sharing soft smiles and laughter, loud rock music, fast car rides at nights on backroads. the knowledge of knowing youre loved unconditionally and you always will be 1000/10
Jaykara (Jason/Kara Zol-El)
Cute, sure. Bad boy meets good girl story cliche I used to read religiously on wattpad. Prefer them as friends as Kara is super gay for Lena. Kara's time as a Red Lantern would help her understand Jason and add more nuance to their relationship. bruce wholeheartedly supports this relationship. kisses on the cheek and coffee dates. cheesy pickup lines 7/10
Joyfire (Jason/Roy Harper/Koriand'r)
tfw when an exiled princess returns to her kingdom to become queen and name the hot men always at her side her royal consorts. kori 100% pegs both, taller than both, manhandles both. tangled feet, waking up with hair in your mouth and throwing a pillow at whoever is snoring. kori's big spoon. jason braids her hair as they watch alien telenovas together while roy tinkers. teaching jason the language of her home planet. spicy food that usually ends up slightly burnt as they dance around the kitchen. hooking your chin over one's shoulder. swapping vigilante costumes on a whim. burning sex trafficking operations to rumble and bones. the view of the stars following you as you make yourself a home after youve been rejected from everywhere else. taking a point off bc its icky how many writers i see that imply theyre only dating jason bc dick didnt work out. 9/10
Jaykyle (Jason/Kyle Rayner)
Don't know the most about this one, only from some truly spectacular fics out there. Enemies to lovers, 500k slowburn. kyle's gay awakening. donna is laughing at the both of them. kyle sketching jasons face absentmindedly. hundreds of sketches of jason littering his sketchbooks. jason reading as kyle draws. literature-art nerds unite. speaking spanish at home. brunch with kyles mom. 7/10
B*tc*st (Jason/Any Member of Batfam) or Jaytalia (Jason/Talia Al Ghul)

After making her screen debut in 1989, Sandra Oh has enjoyed a remarkable career in both film and television. Although the versatile talent and 12-time Emmy nominated actress is best known for her iconic roles as Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy and Eve Polastri on Killing Eve, Oh has also worked with some of the finest movie directors, including Alexander Payne, Steven Soderbergh, Mina Shum, John Cameron Mitchell, and more.
RELATED: Killing Eve – 10 Best Quotes From The Show
As fans continue to enjoy Oh’s new hit Netflix sitcom The Chair, it’s worth recollecting her best movie moments for those who want to see more of the talented actress on the big screen.
10 Defendor (2009): 6.8
Tumblr media
Peter Stebbings’ dark offbeat superhero comedy Defendor stars Oh as Dr. Ellen Park, a psychiatrist who gives hilarious facial and verbal reactions to the outlandish story relayed to her by Arthur Poppington (Woody Harrelson), an ordinary man moonlighting as a vigilante crime fighter.
Cut from the same genre-bucking, irreverent cloth as James Gunn’s Super, once Arthur confesses his secret life to Dr. Park, she convinces the judge to go easy on him and allow him to continue his heroic activity. When tragedy strikes, Oh shows how much heartfelt pathos she can portray by attending a touching ceremony for her patient.
9 Under The Tuscan Sun (2003): 6.8
Tumblr media
Written and directed by the late Audrey Wells, Under the Tuscan Sun is a delightfully uplifting rom-com about Frances (Diane Lane), a writer who ups and leaves her life in San Francisco to live in Tuscany after discovering her husband’s infidelity. Oh plays Patti, Frances’ best friend who encourages her to travel to Italy.
RELATED: Sandra Oh – 10 Best Roles, Ranked (According To Rotten Tomatoes)
In addition to the gorgeous locations, breezy tone, and rich cinematography, Oh adds complexity to the story as Patti, a lesbian expecting a child even after her lover Grace (Kate Walsh) has left her. It’s Patti’s visit to Tuscany when she’s nine months pregnant that helps Frances find the courage to pursue true love despite the painful past.
8 Double Happiness (1994): 7.0
Tumblr media
Oh made her feature film debut in Mina Shum’s must-see coming-of-age tale Double Happiness, in which she plays the lead role of Chinese-Canadian Jade Li. The intensely personal semiautobiographical drama shows how divided Jade is between her traditional Chinese upbringing and her modern Canadian lifestyle.
With a natural performance by Oh matched with the authentic, well-observed writing of Shum, the movie is a universally relatable tale of a person grappling with their own identity while trying to appease the expectations of loved ones. In her first film performance, Oh won the Genie Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, proving what a titanic talent she has been from the start.
7 Rabbit Hole (2010): 7.0
Tumblr media
John Cameron Mitchell’s Rabbit Hole is a bruising account of a family dealing with the death of a young child at the hands of a teenage driver. Nicole Kidman gives a memorable and towering performance as Becca, a mournful mother who begins to find solace by interacting with Jason (Miles Teller), the driver who accidentally took her son’s life.
Although she has a smaller supporting role, Oh plays Gabby, a fellow grieving parent who helps Howie (Aaron Eckhart) deal with his loss at the group therapy sessions he and Becca attend. With profound empathy for Howie, she becomes instrumental in his healing process.
6 Meditation Park (2017): 7.1
Tumblr media
Twenty-three years after working with Mina Shum for the first time, Oh reunited with the filmmaker for the sweet-natured drama Meditation Park in 2017. The story concerns Maria Wang (Pei-Pei Cheng), an aging woman in the throes of an existential crisis upon suspecting her husband’s infidelity. Oh plays Maria’s daughter Ava, a mother of two who encourages Maria to reconcile with her estranged brother ahead of his wedding and break free from her husband’s hold.
RELATED: Asian-American Movies to Watch If You Loved Crazy Rich Asians
As another trenchant glimpse at the immigrant experience and a statement about the importance of women finding their own voice, Shum’s film is tender, touching, and triumphant.
5 Hard Candy (2005): 7.1
Tumblr media
David Slade’s Hard Candy is a deeply unnerving glimpse at a predatory pedophile (Patrick Wilson) getting his just deserts when a teenager (Elliot Page) tricks, traps, and tortures him in his apartment. Oh plays the man’s neighbor, Judy Tokuda, admitting she only took the role due to her working relationship with Page, a fellow Canadian she worked with on Wilby Wonderful the year prior.
With most of the action set inside the inescapable apartment, the visceral terror of the violence that Hayley (Page) exacts on Jeff (Wilson) is met by the suffocating sense of claustrophobia, making for a really upsetting experience. However, the hugely satisfying conclusion helps atone for the squeamish and uncomfortable moments of carnage.
4 Last Night (1998): 7.2
Tumblr media
The most unheralded of Oh’s top films happens to be Last Night, a mordant pitch-black comedy about the impending apocalypse and the rag-tag band of Canadians with differing views on how to react. With the end of the world set to strike at midnight, Sandra (Oh) tries to make it out of her stranded position in Toronto and reunite with her husband, Duncan (David Cronenberg). One bad thing after another ensues.
Weird, wild, and ultimately winning, Last Night boasts writer/director Don McKellar’s signature brand of dark humor and anarchic energy. As such, the film has become an unforgettable cult classic among those who’ve seen it.
3 Raya And The Last Dragon (2021): 7.4
Tumblr media
With great respect and honor for the rich historical traditions of Southeast Asia, Raya and the Last Dragon is one of Disney’s most beloved recent animated movies. Sandra Oh lends her voice to the commanding role of Virana, the Fang chieftess and mother of Raya’s main rival, Namaari (Gemma Chan).
RELATED: Raya And The Last Dragon – What The Voice Actors Look Like In Real Life
With a moving story, spellbinding animation, and characters never before seen, Raya and the Last Dragon continue to soar in the hearts and minds of viewers.
2 Sideways (2004): 7.5
Tumblr media
Directed by her then-husband Alexander Payne, Oh demonstrated her hilarious comedic chops in the indie darling Sideways, a character study of a failing writer at an existential crossroads. The boozy road trip follows Miles (Paul Giamatti), an uptight novelist, and his lecherous pal Jack (Thomas Hayden Church), as they hit Santa Barbara wine country on a tasting tour.
Praised for its excellent performances and light tonal touch between comedy and drama, Oh gives a standout turn as Stephanie, a cool sommelier who has a steamy love affair with Jack (whom she does not know has a fiancee). When she finds out, she goes absolutely ballistic in one of the movie’s funniest moments. The story is so sharply penned that it won an Oscar for Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay.
1 The Red Violin (1998): 7.6
Tumblr media
Despite playing a bit role as Madame Ming in the fifth and final chapter of The Red Violin, the ambitious epic ranks among Sandra Oh’s most well-received movie to date. The film traces a famed 17th-century Violin from its creation in Italy to its auction in modern-day Montreal, and all that the instrument endured in creating some of the most beautiful music the world has ever heard.
Praised for its sumptuous set decorations and costume designs, Oscar-winning original music, intelligent story, and a throwback style of filmmaking that calls to mind the grand epics of the past, the resonance of The Red Violin is still felt today.

RP Headcanons: DC Edition, pt 1
Batfam
Bruce cares, tries, and fails, but generally keeps trying for his kids.
Baby Terry McGinnis is the cutest thing ever and his dinosaur t-shirts reinforce this.
Slade Wilson - terrible person, great assassin, loving (if strict) parent.
Dick and Bruce fight constantly! Once Dick gets mad about something, everything makes him more angry until he and Bruce eventually resolve the first problem. It's sometimes big stuff... sometimes really petty shit.
Steph loves waffles. She will trade Tim for a 4-stack with chocolate chips.
Everybody wants to pair with Bruce on Gotham patrols. He gets the best fights and he brings snacks in the belt - it's a 50/50 if it's protein bars or trail mix, though.
Nobody wants to pair with Bruce on Gotham patrols. He won't let you make Social Media posts or stop for a hotdog at Rico's corner stand.
Jason and Dick actually fight a lot, still. Jason knows how to push Dick's buttons and he uses that as a self-defense tactic when he doesn't want to talk. ("Get Dick mad and he won't ask if I'm okay!")
Cass loved Steph before Steph loved Cass. Stephanie figured it out... eventually.
Lucius Fox only helps with the really weird shit because Bruce trades him Alfred's secret holiday recipes sometimes. Alfred's recipes are the true treasures of Earth.
Duke does his best not to get swept up in the weird, wild lives of his batsiblings tbh.
Tim doesn't babysit, he gets babysat.
Ace is the Good Boy™ but he will try and take Krypto down.
Titus is trained, we swear, but he's goofier than a ferret on drugs sometimes. 10/10 derp.
Sometimes Dami gives Batcow walks through the garden to help her relax.
Every Batfam member will stab the other for the last piece of Ma Kent's apple pie. Even Alfred.
Superfam
90s Kon and YJ Kon both deserve to exist. What better combo than the Insta-famous, outgoing showboat and the blunt, introverted buffbaby?
YJ Kon is way more of a "Conner" than 90s Kon. 90s Con is now "Carter."
Carter + Tim = Flashy Disaster Couple
Conner likes Wally's freckles.
Ma and Pa Kent accept any and all grandkids, time-travel or dimension-hopping be damned because "They're our boys, now, Clark, of course we want to see them!", and there are family trips to the farm.
Clark will bribe his friends and teammates with his mother's cooking. He can't bribe with his own, though, because he's terrible at it.
Jon would happily fly to Gotham for dinner before eating what his father burned made for them.
Krypto would probably go, too.
Clark doesn't know what to do with all of his sons but at least they aren't like his cousins.
"It's not about whether the boob window would look good or not, guys! It isn't happening!" is still something he's had to say before, though, and Clark's mildly ashamed of it.
With three superboys up to bat, the real issue is that none of them want to share the name. Jon had it first and that's fine with his brothers, really. Conner looks and feels like practically an adult, so he's meh about it. Carter wants something catchier to say. The result? Superboy, Kon and Rao.
Jor-El had a conniption when Carter named himself "Rao" as a hero. "You named yourself after OUR GOD?!? You disrespectful little-!"
Lex thought it was hilarious.
The boys are constantly in the background of Carter's posts and there's a few Insta vids of Lex trying and failing to hide that he's mildly amused by his son's shenanigans.
Flashfam
Barry is face-blind (has prosopagnosia). He can gradually memorize specific elements of a person's face ("Uh... Ollie's hair is like mine, right? So he's blond! And I know he has facial hair.") but has trouble associating them together unless he's had long periods of exposure to the person.
Wally is a nervous bundle of anxiety. All of the time.
Barry is practically incapable of looking on the dark side of things, and tends to believe the best of people - this extends to his villains.
Cisco is his bro, Caitlin is like the ditzy aunt, and Harrison is the exasperated father-figure that just wishes his kids didn't drink so much coffee.
Speaking of coffee - Barry doesn't drink it on the job. It makes him antsy.
Captain Boomerang - Digger, to his friends - is always on the edge of getting out of the game. Raising Owen ("Little Diggs") is a higher priority than his Rogues work. He waivers between retirement and always that "last" job that'll set him up to take care of his son.
Little Diggs is too pure for this world, and a fan of Flash even though he knows his father is a villain.
Wally isn't as forgiving with the Rogues as Barry is. This is especially true for Heatwave, Glider and Cold, since they've all double-crossed the Flash before.
Cold isn't fond of Kid Flash. Barry earns his respect and, in some ways, his admiration - this doesn't extend to Flash's smartassed sidekick.
Lisa and Mick are a surprisingly functional duo despite their dysfunctional dynamic. Lisa is generally in charge in their relationship, and Mick knows Len would ice him if he ever raised a hand to Lisa.
Len and Mick are best friends, despite the friction from their clashing personalities.
Lisa keeps pushing Len to either date or pick a favorite hooker - anything to get him laid and chilled out for once.
Len is practically addicted to puns. Not even just cold- or ice-related puns, either! He will make puns out of anything when given an opportunity, and genuinely is amused by them.
Arrowfam
Oliver is never in control of his daily life. He's barely in control of his personal choices most of the time.
Felicity runs it all - the team, the company, organizing his assignments from the League... everything other than doing the hard stuff herself.
Ollie really is a capable hero, but he doesn't believe it. He also doesn't particularly believe that the League needs or wants him there, but couldn't tell you why exactly they keep him, then, if questioned about it.
Roy has totally given up the flash and mystique of heroism tbh. Trucker hat? Check. Bow, arrows, and backup guns? Check. Flip-flops? All the better to chase people with. The slapslapslap of justice will strike terror in the hearts of muggers everywhere.
Oliver spoils Lian relentlessly.
Artemis is glad to avoid the weird shit that Roy and his clones get up to when Ollie isn't paying attention. She's never been more thankful that she isn't one of the adopted sidekicks.
Jim: Big, friendly, easily guilt-tripped, the pretty one.
Will: Mature, down-to-earth, does the guilt-tripping, the mom/dad friend.
Roy: Trash, amger!!!, can't be guilt-tripped but can be blackmailed, has no clue what he wants in life yet.
Lian will either murder you in your sleep or you are now a member of her family. There is no in-between.
No pets. Ever. They will get shot with an arrow by accident and nobody in the house is willing to deal with that emotional burden.
Oliver wants exactly 0 people in the "Arrowfam" but will kill you and/or himself over losing any member of his Arrowfam.

People are being killed with gold tipped knives with owl symbols on their hilts. Dismissing the claim, Bruce continues to fight Gotham’s crime while doing his best to keep Tim safe. Even the best intentions fail. After a wrist injury prompts Bruce to send Tim home early, Bruce is horrified to receive a call from Jack the next morning saying Tim is missing. Try as they might neither man can find Tim. 5 Title: Cats and Devil Bats Word Count: ~5,900 Genre: Romance, Supernatural, Action Fandom/Universe: Batman (comics) Characters/Pairings: Selina Kyle/Bruce Wayne Warnings: Noncon, graphic violence Rating: NC-17 Summary: Batman is a violent vigilante who stalks and kills criminals. When Catwoman finally runs into him, she fully expects to die. But she doesn’t. In fact, he seems to want something else entirely from her. Meanwhile, Selina Kyle meets the enigmatic and very wealthy Bruce Wayne and the two begin a relationship. What happens when their two lives finally cross? And what’s all this about a Bat demon anyway? Everything takes place in Gotham: on rooftops, Bruce Wayne’s penthouse, Selina Kyle’s apartment, Wayne Manor, and the caves beneath it. The noncon is Batman/Catwoman and occurs throughout. It’s not 100% handled well by either of them. Relatively graphic violence in the later chapters, but nothing permanent.

This story is set mostly in Gotham, with a few scenes in Nanda Parbat in the middle when Jason and Damian are with the League. No major warnings besides the Jason/Dick relationship if that bothers you. Some swearing and descriptions of Jason's death and resurrection, but it is not in explicit detail.

11 Title: When You Move, I Move Word Count: 9150 Genre: Fantasy, Action/Adventure Fandom/Universe: Batman, Nightwing, Red Hood and the Outlaws Characters/Pairings: Dick Grayson/Jason Todd, Dick Grayson/Catalina Flores, Dick Grayson & Damian Wayne, Jason Todd & Damian Wayne Warnings: Non-Con/Dub-Con (non-graphic) Rating: R Summary: Despite having been in love with one another since they were children, Crown Prince Richard and Dragon Slayer Jason are faced with the fact that they are bound by duty and law to never marry. King Bruce manages to come up with a plan that would allow the pair to remain close and for Richard to fulfill his duty as the future king. He proposes a marriage of convenience to a woman, Catalina of House Flores, who is on the brink of permanent maidenhood after having been passed over by too many men in the past. And though she was aware that the future king would never love her, Catalina grows bitter and jealous over the love between the two men and the love her and Richard’s son shares with that man. So she calls upon the help of a crone to curse both men to live this life and all future lives close to one another but never allowing them to be together. And though the crone grants the curse she places a contingency: if one of them were to die before their 18th birthday then the curse would be lifted and they would be reunited to share the love they have been denied. When Dick and Jason come into contact with the god Fate in their current life, the pair are made aware of what had been stolen from them decades in the past and shown that because of Jason’s untimely death at the age of 15, the curse has been lifted. And Jason is finally given the answer as to why he was awoken in his grave all those years prior. With the truth laid out before them, the pair must figure out what it means for them in this lifetime and all future ones.

12 Title: The Sorrows Of Healing Word Count: 18k of 20-22k written Genre: Slice Of Life, Drama, Hurt/Comfort, Character-centric Fandom/Universe: Batman - All Media Types, Batman (Comics), AU from Battle of the Cowl Characters/Pairings: Dick Grayson & Tim Drake, Dick Grayson & Damian Wayne, Dick Grayson & Alfred Pennyworth - Alfred Pennyworth, Dick Grayson, Damian Wayne, Tim Drake Warnings: Off-Screen Character Death, Depression, Suicidal Thoughts and Intentions, Racism, Past/Referenced Child Abuse, Hospitals and Therapy Rating: M Summary: It was Dick who had taken up the Cowl after Bruce had died. It was Dick who had become Batman, taking Damian, Tim, and Alfred with him to the penthouse for a fresh start. But things could never be that easy. All of them were haunted by sorrow: Tim not capable of believing that his second father was gone as well, Dick almost breaking under the pressure of standing tall in the face of a crisis, Damian uncomfortable and lost in these unfamiliar waters he was forced to navigate, and Alfred mourning yet another child. In a world in which Bruce actually died, becoming a family again is harder than some might think. In the midst of fights, the racist white Gotham High Society, and Tim, who fled the nest in a last attempt to resurrect something that no longer exists, it is hard to find hope, and yet all of them somehow manage to do so anyways. The story mostly takes place in their Gotham City penthouse, a ballroom, a Baghdad hospital room, and the graveyard. This is a story of healing - but also about the growing pains along the way - so be aware that Tim and Dick deal with depression (Tim with suicidal thoughts and intentions as well), that Damian and Dick face racism, that Damian's childhood will be referenced as the unpretty mess that is was, and that Bruce will not return. His children will have to learn how to fly on their own.

13 Title: since you’ve been gone (I can breathe for the first time) Word Count: 9,134 Genre: whump, hurt/comfort Fandom/Universe: Batfamily comics (mostly preboot canon with occasional elements of New 52 & Reboot canons) Characters/Pairings: Tim Drake, Batfamily, implied one-sided Tim Drake/Ra’s al-Ghul Warnings: Body horror, depression, child abuse, body modification (consensual and non-consensual), terminal illness, child death, substance abuse (harmful self-medication). Rating: Mature Summary: A study of Tim Drake and his experiences with Hanahaki (specifically, familial Hanahaki), mostly following comics canon with a few changes. Starts when Tim is a child (pre-Robin). He befriends the Gotham Sirens after seeking out Poison Ivy to obtain a growth stopper for his Hanahaki, and later befriends Jason-as-Robin. After Jason’s death and Tim’s parents find out about his Hanahaki, Tim seeks out Batman and becomes Robin. Eventually, after he starts spending time with Bruce, his Hanahaki fades. Years later, following the events of Red Robin and Tim’s distancing from the family, it returns with a vengeance. This story is primarily set in Gotham (at Wayne and Drake manors and the Batcave in particular), with scenes in Iceland (including a glacier) and other locations around the world. Being a Hanahaki fic, the story does contain quite a bit of body horror and terminal illness. The depression occurs throughout due to the Hanahaki & events of Red Robin, as does the body modification (in reference to forced surgery and growth-stopping drugs Tim takes (also the substance abuse tag).). Child abuse is neglect on the part of Tim’s parents, and correlates to the non-consensual body modification tag. Child death is Jason Todd’s canon death.

However, the mission goes wrong, forcing Speedy to risk his life, and face his fears, to save Aqualad. This story takes place primarily at night at a warehouse near the ocean. However actions scenes take place inside the warehouse with lots of crates that create a maze effect, and at the end of the story they’re all on fire.

15 Title: (Better Things to do than) Chasing White Rabbits Word Count: 4k of what will likely be 6k Genre: Romcom and action/adventure Fandom/Universe: DC, Pacific Rim Characters/Pairings: Slade Wilson/Dick Grayson Warnings: violence, swearing, slurs (Gipsy Danger is the canon name of a jaeger), overprotective parent Bruce Wayne, sexual innuendo, secret identities, Slade's canonical bad parenting (but at least he's trying to work on that), accidental relationship, family drama, frenemies to lovers Rating: Explicit just in case, though I don't think sex will happen until the next installment in the series Summary: Rumor has it that Dick Grayson can drift with anyone. Slade Wilson has the opposite problem, and kids. Killing kaiju may be easier than parenting, and that's with Grayson playing mediator when he inevitably messes up. Dick, meanwhile, is tired of Bruce overstepping boundaries, and Slade just offered him a chance to help a villain redeem himself while also rubbing B's nose in the fact that clinging so tightly is more likely to drive all his kids away than make anyone want to stay. Even Nightwing has a rep for cheerful spite. Stacker Pentecost is too tired for this; he's got a daughter pushing to join the program, said program to run, and the Becket brothers are enough of a headache. That said, if an internationally wanted mercenary is truly willing to join the program, he'll welcome Deathstroke. He just doesn't want to lose Grayson in the process, or the Wayne family funding for the program. Jason, meanwhile, wins Best Brother accolades, and not just for donning Nightwing while Dick pilots giant robots.

16 Title: in reverse, tragedy Word Count: ~12k Genre: Drama, Action Fandom/Universe: Batman, no specific canon Characters/Pairings: No Pairings, Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Talia al Ghul Warnings: Dehumanization of Talons, Canon-Typical Violence, Decapitation Rating: PG Summary: Around two years after Batman fires Robin and Jason Todd (AKA Batboy) returns from an interstellar mission to find his sort of little brother missing, Talia al Ghul's jet touches down in Gotham. Her objective? Take revenge on the Court of Owls, the secret society hidden under Gotham that ordered Ra's al Ghul's death at the hands of a Talon, one of their personal assassins. During her mission, Talia is once again confronted by the Talon she fought when defending her father. After an intense battle in the Court's underground labyrinth, Talia defeats the Talon. As she unmasks him, she realizes that this Talon is the key to answering a question that has plagued even the Batman: what happened to Dick Grayson? (Sort of a Reverse Robins story, but more accurately a Mix-'Em-Up Robins story.)

17 Title: bury the dead where they're found Word Count: 8K-ish Genre: Action Fandom/Universe: Batman (Comics) Characters/Pairings: Dick/Koriand'r, Jason Todd, Bruce Wayne, Slade Wilson, Gotham Rogues Warnings: Graphic Depictions of Violence, Murder Rating: PG-13 Summary: After returning to Earth and discovering his little brother is dead, Dick Grayson finds himself questioning how heroic Batman's "No Kill" rule truly is. Faced with Bruce's temper and the disrespectful ways Bruce has chosen to honor Jason, Dick decides it's time to take matters into his own hands, and makes a plan to remove the threat of the Gotham Rogues once and for all. Jason Todd, freshly back from the dead, doesn't understand what happened when he looks at the news in Gotham and sees that the Joker is dead. Determined to figure it out, he leaves Talia and makes his way back to the city that led to his death, only to learn from a strange source the truth of what went on while he was away. This story takes place in various locations, including the batcave, an apartment, Arkham Asylum, and the streets of Gotham.

18 Title: Coffee Shop Love Word Count: 7,494 Genre: Fluff, Romance, Crossover, Alternate Canon Fandom/Universe: DC Comics/MCU Characters/Pairings: Dick Grayson/Tim Drake/James "Bucky" Barnes, Owens/Pru/Z, Conner, Cassie, Bruce/Diana, Bart, Cassie/Cass, Jason/Roy/Kory Warnings: None Rating: PG-13 Summary: Five years ago, Tim Drake saved Bruce and walked away from his so-called family and with Owens, Z, Pru and Bucky Barnes the Winter Solider and started up a small coffee shop with only Conner, Cass, Bart, Cassie and Alfred knowing where he is. Tim was happy until the day the Bats and the Avengers found him. Dick has never forgiven himself for driving away Tim, he longs to make things right with him, even if they never become anything but brothers but those plans are derailed when it comes clear to him that James "Bucky" Barnes has more than friendly feelings for Tim. Soon it becomes Dick vs. Bucky for Tim's heart. Tim just wishes that they would have asked him first.

19 Title: Against His Heart Word Count: 6,566 Genre: Angst, PWP, rape recovery, happy/hopeful ending Fandom/Universe: DCU, no particular canon Characters/Pairings: Dick Grayson/Roy Harper Warnings: Past rape/noncon, slut-shaming, consensual nonconsent Rating: NC-17 Summary: The morning after Dick Grayson learns that Tarantula has died in prison, he gets on a train. Somehow he ends up at Roy's place. Nobody knows about everything that happened with Tarantula; even Dick forgets parts of it. He wishes he could erase everyone who'd ever touched him, even if that would erase Roy, so that Roy could touch him anew. They decide to pretend, and play out a situation where Dick is a virgin. A few awkward hiccups and a whole lot of feelings come out. It makes Dick realize something he wants--something he needs, maybe. He wants to pretend to struggle and say no and for Roy to keep going. They pick a safeword, Dick promises to use it, and so he does. Most of the scenes will take place in Roy's apartment which is somewhere in south New Jersey. It's not an AU (i.e. they are superheros), but they're out of uniform for the story. This is definitely a PWP, with a focus on sexual trauma, beginning to heal from trauma, and hints of a burgeoning DickRoy romance. There are no flashbacks to rape, but there are mentions of it throughout, including Dick's feelings towards his own body and his thoughts during sex with Roy. For a majority of the fic, Roy believes that Dick's relationship with Tarantula was fully consensual, before Dick ends up telling him that it wasn't. Dick is a trans man, and Roy is a cis man.

20 Title: Stay Awake With Me Word Count: 10,738 of 40k Genre: Mystery, Case-fic Fandom/Universe: Court of Owls (comics) Characters/Pairings: Clark Kent/Bruce Wayne Warnings: Major Character Death, Violence Rating: NC-17 Summary: When Dick goes missing, the family works together to try and find him. When Bruce goes missing, the mystery only begins to show itself. In an investigation which will span decades, Clark must work together with the remaining members of the Batfamily to unravel the secrets of Gotham's underbelly, and not only stop the Court of Owls in their bid for power, but to also catch Talon!Bruce and Talon!Dick. The fic will explore two timelines: the 'present' timeline which deals with the court of owls plot and a 'past' timeline that explores Clark's role in the batfamily.

21 Title: The Maiden in the Tower Word Count: 6k complete so far, looking to be around 10-11k total. Genre: Urban Fantasy, Romantic Comedy, light Drama Fandom/Universe: primarily the pre-Flashpoint DC canon, though that’s more of a guideline than a hard rule. Characters/Pairings: Everyone Loves Tim Drake, ultimately Dick/Tim; Klarion the Witch Boy, Bruce, Barbara, Cass, Cassie, Kon and Bart all have prominent roles. Featuring cameos from as much of the DCU as I can fit in before the deadline, primarily Titans and Young Justice. Warnings: Low-key canon-typical violence and a ‘happily ever after’ kiss for two (full-grown) adopted brothers. Swearing. A few people get made the butt of jokes but it’s nothing too mean-spirited. Rating: PG-13 (technically R for swearing but content-wise it’s strictly PG-13) Summary: Klarion’s idea of the perfect birthday present is to trap Tim in the highest room (Bruce’s office) of the tallest tower in Gotham (Wayne Enterprises) and flood the rest of the building with a mix of living vines and fairy tale obstacles that can only be overcome by Tim’s true love. Shenanigans ensue as half the superhero community competes for the hand of the fair maid Red Robin. Pay-off is Dick/Tim but the lion's share of the page time is spent watching people fight fairytale tropes while Tim and Klarion snark with popcorn. Light-hearted comedy in which some characters get made to look the fool, ultimately gets no sexier than a True Love’s Ending Kiss. Set entirely within a vine-infested, magically-warped Wayne Tower with everyone from the Bats to the Titans to Tim’s civilian friends dealing with fairytale nonsense: glass mountains, living office supplies, pixies swarms, catching the cat who has the key to the next floor, etc. Meanwhile Tim hangs out in the penthouse with Klarion and a pint of ice cream watching the event like a reality show and getting dunked on for being an archetypal Disney Princess. Fun times for all with a light sprinkling of angst for flavor.

22 Title: The Antecedents to Reunion Word Count: 13,500 (out of approx. 20k) Genre: Steampunk AU, slice of life, case fic Fandom/Universe: Batman comics, drawing heavily from the Court of Owls storyline and Cass's Batgirl run Characters/Pairings: Cassandra Cain/Stephanie Brown (preslash), Tim Drake, Jason Todd, Damian Wayne, Dick Grayson Warnings: non-canonical limb loss, temporary character death, fake character death, grief/mourning, implied brainwashing, past child abuse, drug use in an interrogation by a minor character Rating: PG-13/Teen Summary: In a verison of Gotham that never existed, a version of Gotham where clockwork and steam bring the city through the night, Dick Grayson is believed to be dead, and Cassandra Wayne has just returned from Hong Kong. But as Cass settles back into the city, she quickly discovers that something-- or someone-- is trying to get her attention, and that the clock is ticking on how much time she has to figure it out. This is very much a "slice-of-life" fic, except it's set in a Steampunk AU. This story is set mostly in Gotham, with there being one flashback scene to Cass’s apartment in Hong Kong. In Gotham, characters go to the manor, a gala, an ice cream parlor, and the Iceberg Lounge. There is also a fight scene in Robinson Park against Poison Ivy, in a villain’s apartment against droids, and a brief chase scene across rooftops. The plot with the Court of Owls is fairly in the background of this fic, as the real focus is Cass, her relationships with the other bats, and the intricacies of mourning. This story has a hopeful ending, in that it ends with Cass discovering that Dick is alive, but the actual reunion is left to the reader’s imagination.

23 Title: With Blood and Rage of Crimson Red Word Count: 6,968 Genre: Angst, Action/Adventure Fandom/Universe: DCU, Batfam, Lantern Corps Characters/Pairings: Jason Todd, Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardener, John Stewart, Bleez, Rankorr, no pairings (however, I might include hints of Batlantern (HalxBruce) later) Warnings: Canon-Typical Violence, mentions of past underage attempted rape, mentions of past drug use, mentions of past child abuse Rating: PG-13 Summary: Jason was only 11 when his life was irreversibly changed. Now the newest member of the Red Lantern Corps, he is immediately thrust into a dangerous game where losing could mean death. With practically half the villains in the universe after him and the rest of the Lantern Corps, Jason must watch his step at every corner. To overcome this threat and find a way to save himself and the people he cares for, Jason must first overcome his own inner demons and learn to trust himself and the people around him. This story is set on multiple planets throughout the DC Universe. On Earth, we see Gotham City, the Batcave, and the Watchtower, in space, they travel to Ysmault and other planets that I made up for the purpose fo the fic (so you will have mostly free reign with the design of those planets if you choose to draw scenes involving them). This story involves canon-typical violence throughout. At the start, there are mentions of child abuse, and there is camera footage shown of attempted rape of a minor, but nothing explicit. At the start of the story, Catherine Todd is found by Jason post-OD and that is mentioned a few times throughout the story. The abuse and attempted rape are mentioned a little throughout the story, but not much, as it is not the focus, rather a back story for Jason. Other than that, there is no smut, or even pairings (unless I decide to do the Batlantern, but that will be a minor background pairing). There might be some language, but it is kept to a minimum.

24 Title: You Have Their Eyes (But You'll Never Have Their Smile) Word Count: 6,679 Genre: Action/Adventure, Mystery, Angst Fandom/Universe: DCU, Justice League Characters/Pairings: Jason Todd, Kyle Rayner, Donna Troy, Chris Kent, Lorena Marquez, Connor Hawke, possibly Jaykyle Warnings: Canon Typical Violence, Mentions of Past Character Death, might have some minor language Rating: PG-13 Summary: Eight years ago, the Justice League vanished into thin air. Since then, their proteges have been left behind to pick up the pieces of a broken world. Struggling to fill shoes that don't quite fit, the next generation of the Justice League is faced with their pasts as an old case makes a reappearance, eight years after the original Justice League closed it. This is set on Earth, in various locations like Wayne Enterprises, the Watchtower, the Whitehouse, Los Angeles, Malaysia, and Atlantis. As stated before, violence is a part of this fic, but nothing more than you would normally see in canon. Past character deaths are mentioned, including Jason's temporary death, and the supposed deaths of the original Justice League. There is cussing, but only like two or three words in the entire fic. There are also mentions of a court stripping away Donna's parental rights to Terry.

25 Title: Heavy the Head Word Count: 4k~ Genre: Greek Gods AU Fandom/Universe: No specific canon Characters/Pairings: Dick Grayson/Slade Wilson, assorted batfamily characters Warnings: No real warnings; there's some smut at one point in the fic Rating: NC-17 (overall it's rather tame, but some smut) Summary: Slade is an old nature god, one rather bored with the politics of Olympus. He is, however, rather fascinated by the reserved god of the dead Richard, remembering how different the boy was back when he truly was just a boy. He's always like oddities and figuring out puzzles, and Richard certainly is one at that. Dick would really prefer that everyone leave him alone to do the job he was assigned a millenia ago. Visiting Olympus brings him no peace, not when he knows he'll have to leave again soon, not to see his family for another century or so. Of course, there's always Slade, who's happy to give more than Dick is usually comfortable accepting. Not that that ends up being a bad thing. This story takes place in Mount Olympus, at a waterfall, and in the Underworld.

26 Title: Hearts Beating Side by Side Word Count: 3,600 Genre: Romance, Drama Fandom/Universe: Young Justice Verse Characters/Pairings: Garth - Tempest/Kaldur'ahm/Dick Grayson Warnings: Threesome, misunderstanding, pining, dirty talk Rating: Summary: On the precipice of changes in their lives, Garth and Kaldur find a momentary reunion and the repressed childhood love that they have both harbored for the other is reignited. And even though he's playing the part of full-time playboy, Garth can see the spark that Dick lights within Kaldur. And it's not a one-sided feeling. A weekend of diplomacy is consumed by Garth and Dick's competing jealousy; each believing Kaldur has eyes for the other. When Kaldur catches them, there's guilt, and confessions and polyamorous negotiations.

27 Title: hold onto the fire even if you have to burn Word Count: ~7k Genre: Angst with a happy ending Fandom/Universe: DCU (specifically Batfam) and post-Underworld Unleashed Characters: Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Zatanna Zatara, John Constantine, Donna Troy Pairings: Dick Grayson/Jason Todd (endgame), Dick Grayson/John Constantine/Zatanna (temporary) Warnings: Threesome, rape/non-con mentioned, self-harm (through magic), depression, lack of self-worth, explicit content, graphic violence, temporary major character deaths. Rating: NC-17 Summary: Dick Grayson is no Batman. After Bruce Wayne refuses to resurrect the late Jason Todd, Dick takes matters into his own hands. Armed with the knowledge of a deal that didn't go through, Dick allies himself with Zatanna and Constantine in a bid to right the wrong that Bruce ignores -- even though souls come at a cost. Dick knows he's strong enough to take the pain to save Jason. But can he stop at Jason? Can he let his fallen friends and family stay dead? Dick is determined to save everyone he can, even if it means losing his soul. The story takes place in multiple locations, primarily in Gotham and Neron's throne room in Hell, with occasional switches to Bludhaven. Rape/non-con refers to past instances (Dick/Mirage, Dick/Catalina) that are discussed at length. Threesome takes place as part of a magic ritual. Self-harm is heavily implied through self-sacrificial actions and reckless behavior (as well as the literal deals with a devil). Graphic violence will be canon-typical. Deaths are canonical deaths and happen offscreen (with the exception of Donna Troy and Damian Wayne who die in front of Dick and are described vividly). There's an alternative ending that includes Dick Grayson dying, but that's only one of two endings that will both be written.

28 Title: The Deepest Secret Nobody Knows Word Count: ~6500 written (~15000 total) Genre: Romance Fandom/Universe: General DCU, Batman, Green Lantern Characters/Pairings: Bruce Wayne/Hal Jordan Warnings: Unintentional Exhibitionalism, characters/relationship being outed without their consent Rating: Explicit/NC-17 Summary: Hal and Bruce have been fucking for a full year, but have only been in an acknowledged relationship for six months. A jealous co-worker, who will stop at nothing to destroy Bruce Wayne, has a private romantic encounter between Bruce and Hal taped, then releases photos of the encounter to the press. Hal now finds himself thrust into a part of Bruce's life that he'd only had a vague impression of previously. While he believes that his and Bruce's relationship is solid, he's still left wondering if this will prove to be too much trouble to bother with, for himself, for Bruce, and for Bruce's family. Takes place primarily in Gotham (WEI offices, the Batcave, and the manor), with minor placement on the Watchtower, in Hal's apartment in Coast City, and varying Bruce boltholes around Earth. No serious warnings, other than semi-graphic/graphic sex.

29 Title: In the Shadow of the Empire Word Count: About 12 or 13k, just under 9k written Genre: SciFi, Action/Adventure Fandom/Universe: Batman (though no particular canon), Star Wars AU Characters/Pairings: JayDick, JayTim, implied DickTim, pre-DickTimJay, Cass, Steph Warnings: Graphic descriptions of violence, dub con Rating: NC-17 Summary: For most of the galaxy, life under the Empire's thumb was difficult, stressful, and painfully short. Dick and Jason knew this all too well, trying to keep their rustbucket of a ship in one piece while living job to job on the fringes of the Empire's control. It was a hard life, but as an ex-Jedi and a so-called 'troublemaker' wanted in multiple Empire systems, they didn't have much choice. But when a job goes wrong, they and their crew find themselves on the run from the Hand of the Emperor; a masked dark side user who is as feared as his origins are mysterious... and who is much more involved in Dick and Jason's past than either of them could guess. This story exists within a Star Wars setting, roughly around the time of the Original Trilogy. Scenes take place aboard Jason's ship, on a derelict Republic cruiser (i.e. no lights and without atmosphere or gravity), and on a small, heavily forested moon where the showdown happens between the ship's crew (Dick, Jason, Cass, and Steph) and Dark Side!Tim. The graphic violence is to the tune of blaster and lightsaber wounds. The dub-con occurs when Jason drunkenly sleeps with a stranger at a bar, who later is implied to be Dark Side!Tim undercover. This counts as dub-con because Tim is actively concealing his identity to get information out of Jason and because Jason would likely not have slept with him if he knew who he was and what he was doing.

30 Title: There Be Dragons Word Count: 6425 words Genre: Urban Fantasy, Dragons Fandom/Universe: Batman Characters/Pairings: JayDick Warnings: Descriptions of burning buildings, violence, some gore Rating: M Summary: In Gotham, there be dragons. A pureblood dragon, Bruce revolved his vigilante persona around his ancestry, to become, Dragonman. Dick’s dragonhood was a direct result of Bruce’s ingenious DNA bonding–a gift he now refuses to use. For a moment in his life, however, he tolerated it, for Jason. Then Jason died. For six months, as far as Dick and Bludhaven was concerned, there were no goddamn dragons. Then one night, fire licked the sky. No matter how fast Dick ran, swung and flew, it was too damn late. A casino was razed to the ground. Human bodies stacked in piles. The shadow of a red dragon’s wings flapped in a distance. There was no question, however impossible, who did it. Dick couldn’t believe it. Dick wouldn’t believe it. This dragon flew around in Dick’s city on a raging warpath, knowing more than he was letting on. Dick intended to find it, and stop it.

31 Title: When the Winds are Howling Strong Word Count: 3040 Genre: Found family, omegaverse, no capes AU Fandom/Universe: Batfam, Red Hood and the Outlaws Characters/Pairings: Jason Todd, Dick Grayson Warnings: Implied non graphic rape, intersex omegas, severe misogyny against omegas. Dick is a cop but he’s on leave through 90% of the fic Rating: PG-13/Teen. Nothing is graphic, but the topics are heavy Summary: Dick signed up to be a foster alpha, but never expected that he would actually be given an omega. Then Gorden’s men find an gang’s omega in heat and in bad shape. Since most foster alphas are searching for a mate, Dick is given custody over the omega. Jason was pulled off the streets by Joker’s gang when he was fifteen and life’s only gotten worse from there. As a gang omega, Jason served mostly as a form of recreation for the other gang members. After four years in hell, Jason’s given up all hope of escape. He’s got a new alpha who seems decent, but past experience has taught him those are the worst ones. Found family is the core of this fic. Dick helps Jason with his reintroduction into society/introduction to Gotham’s high society and both are forced to confront their internalized prejudices against other castes. It’s set in Gotham and explores both the slums and the glitzier districts. Jason and other male omegas will be depicted as wearing more feminine styles, including dresses and skirts. Key scenes: Dick taking custody of Jason, Dick and Jason growing used to each other, Tim and Damian meeting Jason by accident, Jason dumping out all of Dick’s liquor cabinet, Dick taking Jason shopping, Jason meeting Bruce and Alfred, Dick takes Jason to a gala and they work through a meltdown, Jason shows Dick where he used to live before Penguin and Joker, Dick and Jason fight after finding out everything Jason did in the gangs, Sheila makes an appearance, Jason is induced into an artificial heat, Dick and Bruce find Jason who is already making progress to rescue himself, End by Jason cutting the ribbon to an omega shelter.

32 Title: Midnight Rendezvous Word Count: 4000+ Genre: PWP, Drama Fandom/Universe: Batman, Nightwing/Grayson Characters/Pairings: Midnighter/Dick Grayson, Bruce/Dick Grayson Warnings: Explicit sex, References to violence, Maybe unsafe sex Rating: NC-17 Summary: Dick is tired of the Golden Boy act. Tired of waiting for Bruce’s approval. And he’s beyond tired of not being noticed... So tonight, he’s going to find someone one who will.

33 Title: crowns of violets and roses Word Count: 3009 Genre: Romance, Alternate Universe - Greek Mythology Fandom/Universe: Batman - All Media Types Characters/Pairings: Bruce Wayne/Jason Todd Warnings: Attempted non con, swearing, descriptions of violence Rating: Explicit (NC-17) Summary: Modern Hades & Persephone AU. After Bruce Wayne’s parents die, he becomes lord of the underworld, leaving the seasons and harvest unattended. Replacing him are the two Robins, Dick and Jason, spirits of spring and growth, but neither is able to fully step into the Waynes’ empty mantle. Things are further complicated when Dick wants to move on to a new role and Jason’s propositioned by another god. Bruce pulls Jason into the underworld, offering him sanctuary from the threats above. In the shadows, Jason finds both his strength and love. But without the work of both Robins, the land crumbles, threatening the lives of mortals and the power of the gods. The only solution is for Jason to return, unless Bruce is able to out think their enemies. The setting for this story is largely modern with stylized elements from different periods (gothic, art deco). The Underworld, which is the primary setting, is heavily influenced by Wayne Manor and the Cave from comics and the animated series. Other places can have a more Gotham art deco influence.

34 Title: Bruce Wayne, the Court of… Word Count: 4035 Genre: AU, humor, fluff, angst Fandom/Universe: Batman comics, Nightwing comics, Red Hood and the Outlaws comics, Batman: Under the Red Hood Characters/Pairings: Dick Grayson/Jason Todd, Bruce Wayne Warnings: rape, death, beating, abuse, violence, spoilers for: Forever Evil arc, Court of Owls arc, recent Nightwing comic arc, recent Batman comic arc, Red Hood and the Outlaws #25, Batman and Red Hood #20 Rating: T/Teen And Up Audiences /PG14+ Summary: Bruce had made many mistakes in his life. The most horrifying and disastrous were the ones involving his family. The way he treated them, deceived, hurt and used finally blew in his face and he had to face the consequences. There was no forgiveness for him now, not from any of them. But maybe there was a way to avoid it all. This story is meant as a fix-it to all the mess the canon turned into. While the story focuses on talking about canonical events there are a lot of headcanon/fanon/tropes put into it as well ie. romantic relationship between adopted brothers. And although the topics discussed are serious matters the fic itself is slightly crackish. The story takes place in Gotham during the Batman: Under the Red Hood events. At first the action is placed all over the city: rooftops, docks, parking lot, train station; for it to narrow down to an abandoned hotel room.

35 Title: Do You Love The Summer Like I Do? Word Count: 6116 words Genre: Romance, Action Fandom/Universe: Batman, Red Hood and the Outlaws Characters/Pairings: JayRoy Warnings: Descriptions of physical trauma, healing from injuries, violence, some gore Rating: M Summary: Those hazy nights spent blinking in and out of consciousness, events of Bruce cracking his hood open like an egg replaying like a neverending nightmare. Waking up to a stuffy bed, IV drips and the simmering heat. Roy’s dumb, handsome face hovering worriedly beside him. For those months of grueling physical therapy, Jason could depend on one thing to keep him going--Roy’ love. Jason would have put any grand plans of his to a screeching halt, if Roy asked him to stay on that island forever. But he had therapy to go to. Jason could respect that. Then, Roy died. And Jason missed the funeral. But unlike every other piece of shit who dared to call themselves Roy’s friends, Jason wasn’t about to let him lie. And he had a way of bringing him back.

For @countthelions fic rec bingo card. I got bingo on the first line and ran out of steam by the third, so here is an only partially completed Rec List dug from my hoard of Ao3 bookmarks. GFFA how do you manage to do what you do  i have so much respect for it.
Anyways, this list is not intended to be Obikin specific, but due to being me, it’s still mostly Obikin.
1. A fic you love without knowing the source material: The Eagle and the Wolf by @fireflyfish
I’ve never seen the film this AU is built off of, but gosh darn it do I love some tragic lovers separated by fate. In this concept, Anakin and Obi-Wan are lovers, cursed to alternately transform into an animal form as the sun rises or sets. In the day, Anakin cares for a beautiful eagle, and at night Obi-Wan is stalked by the form of a great wolf.
2. A fic with a premise that shouldn’t work, but does: Wake Up, Sleeper by penpenhooray
Breaking free from my typical Obikin recs, this is a Kylo/Hux story based around the concept that Hux is a sleeper agent for the Rebellion and the sole Jedi survivor of Luke Skywalker’s Jedi school. I admit I haven’t kept up with its sequels just due to time constraints, but By God do I love this particular work
3. A fic you’ve reread several times: A Robin Redbreast (In a Cage) by onawingandaswear
This is a Hannibal Lector/Will Graham fic exploring an alternative universe that combines elements of both NBC’s Hannibal, and the show’s source material Red Dragon. In this fic, Will returns to the Baltimore State Hospital seeking treatment the traumas inflicted upon him by Hannibal’s manipulations, but Chilton has other plans for Will’s mind, and he finds himself housed next to the man he both loves and despises in equal measure.
4. A fic you still remember many years later: The World Undone by @writegowrite
Can you all believe that it’s been nearly four years since Lily published this piece? Because I, my friends, had to do a double-take when I looked at the dates. Lily’s work has always been an inspiration, and The World Undone will probably always have a place in my heart as one of the best Sith Obi-Wan fics out there.
5. A comfort fic: Wicked Thing by Imaginarykat I don’t think I need to explain this one. If you’re here, you already know.
7. A fic you’d print out and put on your bookshelf: Occam’s Razor by BlairRabbit
This is THE Newton Geiszler/Hermann Gottlieb fic, if you’re a fan of Pacific Rim and this pairing. It’s a post-film exploration of Herman and Newt’s drift compatibility in an unstable new world, and how their connection to the remaining Kaiju will shake that world to its foundations. This fic is a gut-wrenching and beautiful exploration of love and family and loyalty in the face of hate and terror. I can say this is one of my top 5 favorite fics ever. Not that there’s really a list.
8. A fic you associate with a song: Untouchable by Blu3sc0rpion
Song: Limi - Mona Lisa. Untouchable is my guilty pleasure fic and I love it so much. It does deal with some very dark content, but I like that kind of thing so.
9. A fic that inspires you: Reap What You Sow by mz_valkyrie
I’ve been estranged from the Arrow fandom for many years now, but I can say without hesitation that Reap What You Sow was the series that first inspired a love of the A/B/O trope that I carry to this day. RWYS is an Oliver Queen/Slade Wilson alternative universe where an ill-timed heat brings a ghost and feelings long believed forgotten back into the life of Oliver Queen. There is a sequel that publishes sporadically, but I haven’t been actively involved in the Arrow fandom for some time, and am not up to date on it.
12. A fic that led you to making friends with the author: Pursuit by @icsek
I honestly can’t remember if Icse and I were friends before or after she started Pursuit, but I do recall that discussion of this AU came up due to our mutual affliction of being Horse People. I still love this fic, and Anakin’s hopeless pining.
13, Free space: Conceal Me What I Am by @himboskywalker
A wonderful ABO fic exploring an arranged political marriage between Beta Senator Obi-Wan Kenobi and Alpha Jedi General Anakin Skywalker. However, neither man is what they seem, and must navigate their strange new relationship while hiding the truth of their gender from one another.
14. A fic you’ve gushed about IRL: Equinox by @writegowrite
Listen, I love all of Lily’s AUs and could probably fill an entire rec list with just she and Fishy’s works. However, Tikkun and I did talk about this one recently so it gets this spot. Equinox had me in suspense the entire time, and I waited for each chapter with baited breath.
15. A fic that reminds you of a place: The Princess, the Smuggler, and the Sith Lord’s Son by Sassophrass
This OT era fic explores an AU where Luke had come to be raised by Darth Vader as the heir to the Imperial Throne. I can tell you that this fic absolutely destroyed me emotionally. It’s an amazing piece, and I still have vivid memories of actively sobbing in my kitchen at a certain point in the story. 10/10 would recommend it.

Arrow Season 1 Highlights
As part of my countdown to the season 7 premiere, here are my picks for the best and most memorable parts of season 1.
Top 5 Episodes
Pilot 1x01 - Few shows have such an exemplary first episode but the pilot remains one of Arrow’s greatest episodes. The action is great, it sets the tone, we get to see the dual sides of Oliver, and there’s emotional moments between him and practically every main character. It also sets up a few great mysteries.
Damaged 1x05- This episode shows off Oliver intelligence with his grand scheme and the way he manipulates everyone involved. But it also involves a lot of emotional vulnerability- from the flashbacks during his lie detector test, to showing Laurel his scars, to him being tortured for the first time in the flashbacks. It does a lot to establish who Oliver is, even if you can’t completely trust any of it.
Vertigo 1x12- We get Oliver in peril, Bratva connections, Seth Gabel as the Count, brother/sister moments, Oliver losing control and attacking Diggle... And the ending with Oliver injecting the Count with Vertigo while Quentin tries to stop him, is one of the most morally dubious things Oliver does in season 1. Overall, just a really solid episode.
The Odyssey 1x14- Slade and Oliver take the forefront and go on their first adventure together. Oliver begins to learn to fight and begins to step up and become a hero in flashbacks.  Felicity joins the team and gets some great heart-to-heart scenes with Diggle, not to mention the iconic moment of her finding Oliver in her car. Plus, once more we have Oliver in peril.
Sacrifice/Year’s End 1x23/1x09 (I couldn’t pick between the two, especially because I like them for the same reasons)- Great character moments, great action. Tommy’s death is in there. Oliver and Thea bonding while Oliver’s in the hospital. Thea’s weird anti-texting and driving PSA to Roy. Big important fight scenes with Malcolm. Really solid arc episodes, both of them.
Top 5 Fight Scenes
Oliver v the Kidnappers 1x01- Our introduction to Oliver as a fighter, it shows off his skill, his parkour, and most importantly, his ruthlessness. With no weapons, Oliver kills 5(?) armed men with little trouble, and no hesitation and it clearly establishes just what kind of man we’re dealing with.
The Hood v the Dark Archer 1x09- Oliver has been essentially unmatched so far. Some opponents are more of a challenge than others, but mostly he’s been able to beat everyone he comes across. And he so. thoroughly. loses. A big, grand defeat. It’s also a very dynamic fight, through the different parts of the abandoned building.
Slade Wilson vs. Billy Wintergreen 1x14- Not only is it a great fight (it involves Slade, of course it is) It’s one of the first sword fights on the show, and it is important foreshadowing-- Slade kills a former friend because he’s been betrayed. And someone loses an eye.
Oliver v Mr. Blank 1x20- This one is fun primarily because it’s in Queen Mansion and Oliver is in plain clothes. Its always fun to see the two sides of Oliver mix, and watching Mr. Blank react to that is also interesting. Plus, dramatic lightning, and Oliver improvising weapons, fighting up and down the stairs. It’s a good scene.
The Hood v Malcolm Merlyn 1x23- Oliver’s final (haha not really) confrontation with his nemesis, who has already beaten him twice before. A nice dramatic rooftop setting. And Oliver winning by stabbing an arrow through his own shoulder to kill Malcolm, is fantastic.
10 (+ a few) Great Scenes/Moments
Not a top 10 because I’m sure I’ve forgotten some. But 10 that I really like. Plus honorable mentions.
Nightmare 1x01- Having just returned home, Oliver is sleeping on the floor in front of an open window, dreaming of the Gambit sinking; when Moira tries to wake him, he instinctively flips her to the ground and puts a hand on her throat. This scene sets the stage for just how broken (and how dangerous Oliver has become). It’s dramatic and emotional, and very well portrayed.
“My coffee shop is in a bad neighborhood”  1x03- The iconic first meeting of Oliver and Felicity. It’s funny, and charming, and so sweet when looking back at how far they’ve come. And without this scene we wouldn’t have Felicity who is such an essential part of the show.
“I killed your daughter” 1x05- The lie detector test that Oliver takes for Quentin. First of all, Oliver is easily able to beat a lie detector, and that’s cool. Secondly, you get to see the unexpected toll that Quentin’s questions have on Oliver, as they trigger ptsd flashbacks and an admission of the guilt he feels over Sara’s death. It’s emotional and vulnerable and well done.
“I just want it to be quick like yours”  1x06- In flashbacks, Oliver is trapped in a cave and dreams/hallucinates a confrontation with his father. It’s a really pivotal scene because it ends with Oliver trying to kill himself (which doesn’t work because the gun is also a dream/hallucination). It’s heart-wrenching to see Oliver brought so low so early on and it sets the stage for years of self-destructive and at times suicidal behavior to come.
“I don’t need the bow” 1x12- Diggle cautions Oliver not to go out against the Count’s men because he’s still feeling the effects of Vertigo. When Oliver can’t reliably aim an arrow, Diggle thinks it’s settled until Oliver delivers this iconic line, and then proceeds to go out and beat up all the counts men with his bare hands. A testament to Oliver’s Awesomeness.
“You might have some fight in you after all” 1x13- Slade and Oliver meet for the first time, beginning one of the most important relationships of the series. A pivotal moment, that establishes Slade’s character well, and a key point in defining Oliver’s will to survive, as he (breaks his hand? dislocates something? its not clear) to escape.
Oliver and McKenna’s first date 1x15- Oliver and McKenna go on their first date. She starts questioning him about the island, triggering ptsd flashbacks and leading to him becoming irritable and offending her. It’s a nice little slice of life moment with an underrated character (I love McKenna) and one of the clearest demonstrations of Oliver’s ptsd.
“Because you always have” 1x16- Oliver is forced to reveal his secret identity to Tommy in order to save his father. High stakes, emotional, and a great moment in the relationship of these two
“You sentenced me to that island” 1x23- Oliver and Malcolm get a face-to-face confrontation at last and for the first time, Oliver has someone to blame for all that he’s been through up to that point. We get to see Oliver’s anger and betrayal, are introduces to the personal side of this nemesis relationship, and hear Malcolm’s justifications
Oliver kills Fyers 1x23- This is the first time that Oliver actually makes the choice to kill someone. He’s killed before accidentally, and he fired the missiles that destroyed the camp, but didn’t seem fully aware that Shado had reprogrammed them in that way. But this time is a very deliberate choice in order to save Shado and it marks a turning point in Oliver’s life. It’s also his first kill with a bow and arrow.
Oliver and Moira go to Big Belly Burger (I don’t know what episode)/ Diggle takes Tommy and Oliver to Big Belly Burger 1x03- Season 1 has some great human bonding moments in Big Belly Burger and I miss those.
Felicity and Diggle talk in the foundry for the first time 1x14- Its a really fascinating look at their beliefs about Oliver’s crusade, and such a different introduction to the mission simply because Oliver is not a part of the conversation.
“I looked in his eyes. He’s a killer.” 1x04 - Oliver loses control in Iron Heights and Laurel turns against the hood as a result. A side of Oliver that rarely comes through, that part of him that’s fueled by rage and not quite in control.
Every time Oliver ditches Diggle (and Rob) 1x01-1x04

I found an old Doc with a Marching Band AU so take it
Jericho / Joseph Wilson (Flute)
‘That one gay friend who has a better fashion sense than me’
Don’t pronounce his last name as ‘willis’ like the principal or he will f you up
And by that he means he’ll get his scary brass boyfriend to f you up
Probably the sassiest person in Band
He is an angry human espresso and if you look at Kyd Wykkyd for too long he’ll break your leg
Very protective of his batnerd
Kole is also a flute n they are very good buds
Vows to one day burn the school’s band uniforms so they have to buy new ones
Calls everyone ‘fam’
If it’s possible to be that one controversial archetype he will be it
He is also the school’s biggest male feminist
Bumblebee is the biggest female feminist
Also he likes penciling in weed symbols (despite the fact he has never touched a drug in his life) all over the school campus
Mainly only joined Band because the Wilson bunch were sitting at a family dinner once and somebody (he doesn’t even remember anymore like maybe ROse?? Maybe Father????) said that the only instrument he could play was his twangy guitar and ofc he took that as a cHALLENGE
Raven / Raven Roth (Clarinet)
Very dark humour
Only real friend is Jericho bc they like to complain about Grayson together
Also Jericho is the only person who laughs at her jokes
Has more power over people than she lets on
Dating the head cheerleader helps too (angel)
Pretty chill
Not v good at physical fighting but just her all around dry personality will intimidate you
The woodwind section is filled with very violent human gnomes it seems
she has a tumblr indeed but trust me yOU DONT WANT IT
its filled with actual witch spells and v v gory things
Joined Band for the extra credit, stayed for the time away from home
Her home consists of her usually absent mother and emotionally abusive father (my way of inserting Trigon in here somewhere) and Joey is really the only person that knows and she can just vent to
They’ve had well over a few crying sessions
 SeeMore / Seymour Johnson (Saxophone)
Joined band bc he’s a broke idiot in need of a scholarship
Joined saxophone because mEMES
Plays ‘we are number one’ every f-ing time Kyd so much as looks at him

i saw your tweet so uhm yeah: top 10 characters who could raw you?
oh geeze 🙈 i guess i gotta now. nsfw text ahead:
rick grimes, the sweaty homeless trash man with the stinky dick could raw me any day of the week (a compulsory rawing as all the condoms out of date by now). all i ask is he dab away most of the zombie gore from his person so i dont turn as we bone. also he must have a beard this is a major requirement.
bruce wayne, 40+ in age (not batfleck). it must be bruce wayne not batman, bruce sex would be fun and breezy and he’s probs do stuff to u for ages bc he has major issues and needs to prove himself. plus he’d probs never ring u again after bc he cannot stay in a stable relationship 👌. sex w/ batman would be awful and aggressive and he’d probs cry after. then maybe a villain would also kidnap you afterwards. i dont need that
slade wilson. u know he fucks good bc he’s hella old but stays looking young so he’s had major practise. he’s fucking in nearly every issue he’s in. problem is he’s got 100 kids so u know that seed potent so after said rawing, i’m popping some plan b pills to sort that shit out.
dccu arthur curry. i don’t know anything about this character yet apart from he looks like jason momoa and is aquaman. that’s all u need to know. plus a rawing under water would probably sort itself out idk i’m not a sex ed teacher.
thor odinson. i dont even need to explain this one. sex w/ thor would be the best damn sex in the galaxy. (loki might kill me after, worth it tho)
whatever character jdm plays in the good wife. i haven’t caught up with that season yet but he looks hot af but also kind of trashy. peak rawing material. (he must wear his glasses)
netflix’s frank castle/punisher. some good sex would cheer him up i think he deserves that. he’d 100% cry afterwards and probably try to kill me but, again, it’d be worth it.

Commentator’s notes
Andrew Cotter: “There’s no doubt that this is the most eagerly-anticipated Test of England’s series – even more so when you consider that they haven’t played the All Blacks in four years.
“Perhaps fittingly Chris Ashton – who hasn’t made a start for England in the same period – is one of the minor tweaks made by Eddie Jones.
“The All Blacks are in fine form – when are they not? – having won the Rugby Championship again and scored four or more tries in their last 12 Tests.
“But there have also been curious signs of defensive weakness, most notably in two Tests against the Springboks.
“But really it’s England’s defence, drilled by former All Blacks coach John Mitchell, which will have to be at its very best to give England any chance of victory.
England 38-21 New Zealand highlights
View from both camps
England head coach Eddie Jones: “Against New Zealand the 80 minutes are important. Jack Nowell has got an incredible work rate so we feel he’ll be enormously valuable for us in the last 20 minutes.
“But Chris can sniff a try from anywhere. To beat New Zealand you have got to score tries. He’s in good form and has looked sharp, so we’ve given him the nod to start.”
New Zealand head coach Steve Hansen compared Saturday’s match with last year’s series against the British and Irish Lions: “I think the England match is even bigger actually. I think the Lions tour has made it bigger because we weren’t successful.
“In only drawing the series, that wasn’t successful to us. That’s made this week have a sharper edge to it, which is good.
“You’d have to be on holiday, I reckon, if you didn’t work out that this is going to be big. And we haven’t got anybody on holiday this week.”

3. The updated top 10 classes
(If that’s not loading for you, the full rankings are here.)
4. Does all this even matter all that much?
Oh, absolutely. At this point, there’s little doubt that recruiting rankings are worthwhile at the big-picture level, despite those (wonderful!) success stories that always spring to mind about two-stars overcoming the odds and getting drafted in the first round.
They matter at the player level. Blue chips are almost 1,000 percent more likely to be drafted in the first round. You can see the star ratings drop throughout the NFL draft. And five-stars are about 33 times as likely to be All-Americans as two-stars are.
They matter at the team level. Matt Hinton broke the country into five tiers of recruiting might, finding the higher-recruiting schools to consistently beat their lessers virtually across the board.
They matter at the championship level. Every national champion of the ratings era has passed a specific recruiting benchmark, as Bud Elliott’s Blue-Chip Ratio annually demonstrates.
There are major exceptions, duh, like CMU’s Eric Fisher, who went from being a 240-pound two-star to a 306-pound No. 1 pick — hard to expect national rankings to predict a player to gain 66 quality pounds in college. Bill Connelly, who's way smarter than me, still finds them highly valuable, despite obvious flaws.
Perfection shouldn't be the standard, though. Especially since the four big services get better during the course of a year and more accurate from year to year. Just Rate The Bama Croots Highly has been a winning strategy, for one.
At the anecdotal level, let's take a look at how all of college football would've changed if one recruit, five-star Tim Tebow, had chosen differently. See how much one commit mattered?

Google pleasing publishers by ending 'first click free' policy
Even Google knows when it's pressing publishers too far, and after enough complaints about internet advertising revenues drying up for most news publishers, the big G is letting them make money through subscriptions. Most can agree that even those that used to make a good amount with Google ads have seen those diminish drastically in the past few years and sponsored content has been the main source of income to keep your writers paid. Google is ending a decade-old policy that required publishers to provide some free stories to Google users —though it’s not clear how many readers will even notice, at least for the moment. Publishers had been required to provide at least three free stories a day under the search engine’s previous policy, called “first click free.” Now they have the power to choose how many free articles they want to offer readers via Google before charging a fee, Richard Gingras, vice president of news at Google Inc., wrote Monday in a company blog post. The goal is to help publishers build up digital subscriptions, an imperative for many media outlets that pay large sums for news production but are starved for advertising revenue. Google’s previous approach had let readers skirt paywall policies by typing a headline into Google and getting access to a story without having it count against a monthly free article limit, said Kinsey Wilson, an adviser to New York Times Co. CEO Mark Thompson. IMPACT ON READERS Many online readers may not notice a change overnight unless they visit a particular site several times a month without subscribing. And not every publication blocks users from reading stories with a paywall. Newer digital-only outfits tend not to. Newspaper companies that do cut off readers tend to do so after a certain monthly allotment of free stories. The Times offers 10 free articles, for example; the Boston Globe, two. Newspaper companies are trying to cope with steep declines in print-ad revenues as advertising has moved online. Google and social media companies like Facebook and Twitter are powerful drivers of traffic for publishers. But mandated freebie articles can complicate publishers’ attempts to bolster their paid-subscriber base. News Corp.’s Wall Street Journal had turned off “first click free” for its four main sections in January. It then lost half its Google traffic to articles, said spokesman Steve Severinghaus. Google would demote a publisher’s content if they didn’t use first click free, but now says that won’t happen anymore. Jason Kint, the head of the Digital Content Next media trade group, said he expects Google’s change will lead to news sites enabling more subscription models, making it harder down the road for web users to gorge themselves on stories from a particular outlet without paying for it. TURNING TO SUBSCRIPTIONS Subscription revenue is increasingly important for newspaper publishers. Print-ad revenue continues to shrink, and Facebook and Google are gobbling up most digital ad revenue. Research firm eMarketer says the two companies will take in 63 percent of U.S. digital ad dollars this year. Facebook, too, is working on a way for news articles to charge readers for articles they share and read on the social network. News outlets have become more aggressive at challenging the Silicon Valley giants. In July, news outlets sought permission from Congress for the right to negotiate jointly with Google and Facebook, given the duo’s dominance in online advertising and online news traffic. In a statement Monday, News Corp. CEO Robert Thomson said Google’s change would be good for journalism if “properly introduced.” In months of testing with Google, reducing those free clicks from three to zero “generally improved” subscription rates, the New York Times’ Wilson said. But he added the Times continues to assess whether to actually reduce the number of free clicks now that it can. He said it was “not simply a mechanical decision” because the Times’ mission was in part to make sure its news was available to a wide audience and to set the news agenda. Google says it made the changes after feedback from and experiments with publishers. The company also says it wants to make subscribing to publications a more streamlined process and says it is working on ways to use its artificial intelligence capabilities to help publishers find new subscribers. Google Driving Future Of Digital Subscriptions Journalism provides accurate and timely information when it matters most, shaping our understanding of important issues and pushing us to learn more in search of the truth. People come to Google looking for high-quality content, and our job is to help them find it. However, sometimes that content is behind a paywall. While research has shown that people are becoming more accustomed to paying for news, the sometimes painful process of signing up for a subscription can be a turn-off. That’s not great for users or for news publishers who see subscriptions as an increasingly important source of revenue. To address these problems we’ve been talking to news publishers about how to support their subscription businesses with a focus on the following: First, Flexible Sampling will replace First Click Free. Publishers are in the best position to determine what level of free sampling works best for them. So as of this week, we are ending the First Click Free policy, which required publishers to provide a minimum of three free articles per day via Google Search and Google News before people were shown a paywall. Longer term, we are building a suite of products and services to help news publishers reach new audiences, drive subscriptions and grow revenue. We are also looking at how we can simplify the purchase process and make it easy for Google users to get the full value of their subscriptions across Google’s platforms. Our goal is to make subscriptions work seamlessly everywhere, for everyone. First Click Free We will end our First Click Free policy in favor of a Flexible Sampling model where publishers will decide how many, if any, free articles they want to provide to potential subscribers based on their own business strategies. This move is informed by our own research, publisher feedback, and months-long experiments with the New York Times and the Financial Times, both of which operate successful subscription services. "Google's decision to let publishers determine how much content readers can sample from search is a positive development,” said Kinsey Wilson, an adviser to New York Times CEO Mark Thompson. "We're encouraged as well by Google's willingness to consider other ways of supporting subscription business models, and we are looking forward to continuing to work with them to craft smart solutions." Publishers generally recognize that giving people access to some free content is the way to persuade people to buy their product. The typical approach to sampling is a model called metering, which lets people see a pre-determined number of free stories before a paywall kicks in. We recommend the following approach: Monthly, rather than daily, metering allows publishers more flexibility to experiment with the number of free stories to offer people and to target those more likely to subscribe. For most publishers, 10 articles per month is a good starting point. Please see our Webmaster blog and our guide on Flexible Sampling for more detail on these approaches. “Try before you buy” underlines what many publishers already know—they need to provide some form of free sampling to be successful on the internet. If it’s too little, then fewer users will click on links to that content or share it, which could have an effect on brand discovery and subsequently may affect traffic over time. Subscription support Subscribing to great content should not be as hard as it is today. Registering on a site, creating and remembering multiple passwords, and entering credit card information—these are all hassles we hope to solve. As a first step we’re taking advantage of our existing identity and payment technologies to help people subscribe on a publication’s website with a single click, and then seamlessly access that content anywhere— whether it’s on that publisher site or mobile app, or on Google Newsstand, Google Search or Google News. And since news products and subscription models vary widely, we’re collaborating with publishers around the world on how to build a subscription mechanism that can meet the needs of a diverse array of approaches—to the benefit of the news industry and consumers alike. We’re also exploring how Google’s machine learning capabilities can help publishers recognize potential subscribers and present the right offer to the right audience at the right time. “It's extremely clear that advertising alone can no longer pay for the production and distribution of high-quality journalism—and at the same time the societal need for sustainable independent journalism has never been greater.  Reader-based revenue, aka paid-content, or subscription services, are therefore not just a nice-to-have, but an essential component of a publisher's revenue composition,” said Jon Slade, FT Chief Commercial Officer. “The Financial Times is welcoming of Google's input and actions to help this critical sector of the media industry, and we've worked very closely with Google to aid understanding of the needs that publishers have and how Google can help. That mutual understanding includes the ability to set controls over the amount of free content given to readers, a level playing field for content discovery, optimised promotion and payment processes. It is important that we now build and accelerate on the discussions and actions to date.”   We are just getting started and want to get as much input from publishers—large, small, national, local, international—to make sure we build solutions together that work for everyone.
