In 1954 Philips—a Dutch electronics company—started releasing classical works as 10 inch albums with laminated cardboard covers in the Favourites-Series. This series is different from the 12 inch series launched in 1956 featuring the cover photography by Paul Huf.

[..] Perhaps the most discussed driver behind vinyl’s rise in music biz circles, though, is the so-called “superfan”.
In a 2020 interview with The Times of London, Rob Crutchley of the UK music trade industry group BPI [167 articles]">BPI said “superfans” were powering a “buy-to-own rather than buy-to-listen” trend.
“A proportion of people are buying vinyl because they’re a superfan, so even if they don’t actually have a turntable they’re still keen to support the artist and have the artifact itself,” he said.
“Sometimes it can be because they’re catalog titles that are being re-pressed in a new edition — maybe a run on a different colored vinyl — other times it might be a new title that has a limited press on a certain format.
”In its 2023 report, Luminate defines superfans as “music listeners who spend above average (median) time AND money on music, actively discover new music, participate in music-related activities on social media, and plan on attending a live music event in the next 12 months.
”Three core behaviors set these ‘superfans’ apart from others, Luminate found:
First, they engage in social signaling (i.e., they want people around them to know about their passion for a particular genre or artist);
Secondly, they view music as an expression of their identity;
Thirdly, they engage in a community centered around music.
All of which suggests that the music industry could make serious money off of superfans’ love for vinyl in the coming years – regardless of whether or not they end up playing the format on a turntable.

#wild..#not sure how i feel about this tbh#it's interesting yes#but also the leadtime on vinyl pressing rn is insane#and while big artists with economic leverage and huge fanbases are making bank#they are also clogging up capacity at the very limited no. of vinyl supplies#making it super difficult for smaller and/or independent artists to get production slots which aren't 6-8-10 months out#making the writing/recording - album release - touring cycle that much longer and in effect less profitable#like i get it.. a 12 inch record is like a little piece of art#but knowing that some many records never get to see a turntable makes me sad#yet another thing that makes succeeding that much more difficult for smaller acts#music business#vinyl#fan culture#music business worldwide#25.04.23#link#m

Beck - Loser
1993
"Loser" is a single by American musician Beck. It was written by Beck and record producer Carl Stephenson, who both produced the song with Tom Rothrock. "Loser" was initially released as Beck's second single by independent record label Bong Load Custom Records on 12-inch vinyl format with catalog number BL5 on March 8, 1993.
When it was first released independently, "Loser" began receiving airplay on various modern rock stations, and the song's popularity eventually led to a major-label record deal with Geffen Records-subsidiary DGC Records. After the song's re-release under DGC, the song peaked at number 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in April 1994, becoming Beck's first single to hit a major chart. Internationally, the song reached number one in Norway and entered the top 10 in Australia, Austria, Canada, Iceland, New Zealand, and Sweden. The song was subsequently released on the 1994 album Mellow Gold.
"Loser" received a total of 73,3% yes votes!
