Cassette Crash Course
Hey, I made something for you Stranger Things fic writers who have never seen an audiocassette in person before.
It's mostly unscripted (I've got some notes for the second one but the first one is kind of rambly) and totally unedited (I was deliberately going for low-effort because to be maybe a little too honest I was tired and depressed in both of these but it was still something I wanted to do so I worked through it) but...
I made you guys a couple of videos where I talk about audiocassettes (and touch on a few things like VHS tapes and video rental places and just...stuff that really helps to know if you're writing fanfiction (or even original fiction) set in the '80s.
If you want to write without doing research, like if you're just here to have low-effort fun without thinking too hard, I'm definitely not going to judge you for that. Look how low-effort these videos are. The important thing is that you're having fun.
But if you're like me and you WANT to do research for these things but have trouble finding information? This is for you guys. I even brought out my cassette collection as a visual aid.
Also, there's no rule that you have to ship the same shit I do to get something out of this. For instance, I ship Steddie. You ship Hellcheer? This is for you, too. I ship Byler, but I'm not gatekeeping Mileven writers from using this. I'm not even gatekeeping other fandoms. You wanna write Reddie from It? Rymin from Infinity Train? Original fiction? This might help you, too. While it's catered to Stranger Things, that only really comes up a few times. Most of it is just general tape info spoken into a low-quality laptop microphone while my heater goes off every five minutes in the background.
Also, I'm open to answering questions or, like, taking clearer pictures of things if you need them. I know the laptop webcam isn't exactly high definition.
Hope this helps at least someone. Happy writing.
