I feel like reader has gotten to a place where she's not so much abandoned her humanity but she's so accustomed to this life now that she's just used to it? Like the whole 'frog in boiling water' thing, and I think now she has Sam she understands why Michael violently protects her, she knows she has to be this way to protect her family
I'm so glad you liked Mikey and Jason! I had such fun writing it, contrasting their personalities, I'll definitely be writing more in the future
