ハクション大魔王の壺型ライターとダルマみくじ（青森産）

壺型ライターは、１０年ほど前に購入。ダルマは、裏に円筒形の穴があって、そこにみくじが（大吉でした）

Not a name but a really outstanding sign for an acupuncture and massage therapy place. It reads ツボ押します [つぼ おします], which means "(We) push pressure points." Straight to the point!

While the katakana ツボ is usually used in an acupuncture context, the kanji is 壺 (on-yomi: コ). It also means pot/jar/vase, depression or divot, dice cup, basin (of a waterfall), key point/essence, position on a fingerboard (for shamisen or koto), or target (when aiming an arrow). There’s a thematic similarity here, no?

押 also has a lot of thematically related meanings, mostly centered around the verb お.す, meaning push or press. It can also mean seal, attach, weight, subdue, stop, seize, or do in spite of. It's read お.す, お.し-, お.っ-, お.さえる, おさ.える, or オウ.

絶対秘密の壺(2023) 個展「春色」より

今回の個展では着物を着た人をモチーフにした絵を中心に展示しました。 ランダムに選んだ気にになる浮世絵をベースに描いた作品です。 なにやらおいしそうな密がたっぷり入っている壺にこっそり集まる女たち “The Absolute Secret Pot” (2023) From the solo exhibition “Spring Colors"In this solo exhibition, I mainly exhibited paintings featuring people wearing kimonos. The works are based on ukiyoe that I randomly selected and liked. The girls are gathered at a pot full of some delicious-looking honey-like liquid.

Seiko and I took a trip to Kirishima to dine at the incomparable Sakamoto Kurozu @tsubobatake Overlooking the bubbling volcanic Sakurajima, this unique Kagoshima spot is both a restaurant and a factory, complete with a "field" of earthenware Tsubo pots filled with aging "black vinegar". This Kurozu vinegar has been made here for more then 200 years using only steamed rice, koji yeast, and water. I went for the "Premium Lunch", which came with a very tasty apple cider vinegar drink paired with vinegar-soaked jellyfish, roasted ham, and sesame chicken. The main dish was a sweet and sour Subuta Kagoshima pork and a salad with black vinegar dressing. There is also black vinegar sitting on the table if you'd like to add it to any of these Chinese-style dishes. After we ate, we went to the factory gift shop and tried all the different vinegars. It is interesting how they mellow out as the years go by.
