saw some tags on a reblog i did but yes, iroquois is a derogatory term. it's a french bastardization of (i believe) the algonquin word for "snake." the term is used to describe member tribes of the haudenosaunee (approximate pronunciation ho-di-no-SHO-ni) confederacy in the capital region of the us and up into canada, which include:
Mohawk / Kanienʼkehá꞉ka (approximate pronunciation "gah-nyen-geh-hah-ga") - “People of the Flint."
Also referred to as the “Keepers of the Eastern Door” because they are the nation furthest to the east in the Confederacy. (alix note: mohawk communities are predominantly in canada but there are bands in northern new york as well.)
Oneida / Onyota’a:ká (approximate pronunciation "oh-nyo-DA-aw-GA") - “People of the Standing Stone” (there are two Oneida nations in the US, one in NY, one in Wisconsin, because of,,,y'know. displacement.)
Onondaga / Onöñda’gegá’ (approximately pronounced "ohnen-DA-geh-GA") - “People of the Hills.”
Also referred to as the “Keepers of the Central Fire” because they were the center and capital of the Confederacy
Cayuga / Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫ' (approximately pronounced "guy-yo-KO-no") - “People of the Great Swamp”
Seneca / Onöndawá'ga (approximately pronounced "Oh-nown-da-WA-gah") - “People of the Great Hill.”

all nations in the confederacy are still extant and all (to the best of my knowledge) have programs to keep their languages alive; i've linked to the govt websites for each nation.
just like...as a general rule of thumb if something sounds french (or european, tbh) and it's being applied to indigenous peoples of the americas it's safe to assume it's probably not the right word to use. (exceptions exist: the st croix band of ojibwe, etc.) rule of thumb is double check and you can do this very easily by searching "[name of nation] tribal government website" to see what names and terms are acceptable.
(i keep forgetting to put this on posts but yeah, i'm white. i grew up in haudenosaunee territory, i work in indian law [canadians don't fight me, that's the legal term in the us, i don't like it either], and this is basic 101 stuff that every settler in the us needs to fuckin know.)
eta: this should also be obvious but if a mohawk, tuscarora, seneca, cayuga, onondaga, or oneida person self-describes as iroqouis, leave them the fuck alone. same rule of thumb as a lesbian self-describing as dyke. as a lesbian, i get to reclaim that word. as a white person, i do not get to reclaim iroquois. it's that simple.

Round 4 - Cannabis
Most ancient cultures grew cannabis as a herbal medicine; the plant originally evolved in Central Asia before it was introduced into Africa, Europe and eventually the Americas. The history of cannabis cultivation in America dates back to the early colonists, who grew hemp for textiles and rope. The fiber was also used to make clothing, paper, and sails, and its seeds were used as food.

These are UPDATED versions of my previous crop fields - If you have the old fields in your game, they will still work as they are separate plants, but please consider that the new fields are much lower in poly (game weight/size) than the old fields, and reworked to look better over large areas as they are fuller and circular in shape rather than an odd triangle. Please consider replacing them in your games.
These are giant fields. They are meant to fill empty space in CAW/Edit town - you can use them on lots, but as stated they are quite large so if you decide to use them as lot decoration hold onto your hat because they're gonna take up a chunk of ground.
I will be making smaller/single plants to match the fields, but it takes time so please be patient.
These are speedtree plants, so they'll "follow you" when you move around. However consider that any recolors of these plants will become a default replacement unless you make the package unique. So if you would like to recolor them to suit your current world, feel free to, but please make it it's own package so they don't override the original.
These are fairly large but have low polycount - coming in at 330 polys each. That means you can have several of these in one area without weighing down your game too much. That's a win for everyone.

Switched Alliances - Part 2 (Leila Ouahabi x Reader)
It had been just over a week since you had been and watched the Spanish girls play their opening game and much to your disappointment you hadn’t made the second game. After watching the game on tv though, the disappointment you felt quickly turned into a small bit of relief because you weren’t sure you could see their sad faces in person. You had a soft spot for the girls before you had been introduced to them so now you felt a more personal connection, seeing their down faces would not have sat well with you.
Leila had found out who your sister was after she had seen the photo of you in her shirt on one of the stories the girl posted. Leila had made a point to follow all her new teammates at Manchester City so when Lauren Hemps story showed you in the match worn jersey, Leila clearly seen spread across your back, with the caption ‘She has a new favourite City player already 🙄’ she couldn’t help but message the girl asking for a way to contact you.
Lauren had shown you the request and of course you had told her to pass on your own Instagram. You weren’t tagged in Lauren’s for privacy, you weren’t famous you were just a normal human so having your socials followed by loads of people you didn’t know was just not something you were wanting. You were however wanting the Spanish woman’s follow one that came very quickly along with the message asking if you would come to her next game.
That lead you to now. You were sat in the family section of a Spain match once again and you were more nervous than you thought possible. Leila had set you up with these tickets, much to your own shock at being placed amongst the rest of the players families. You were here as her guest and the game was more than important. It was must win to secure, without any doubt, the chance to go through to the knock out stages.
You didn’t really think too much about what would come after this game, in the back of your mind you knew that if Spain won they would most likely face your sister and home country in the next round. Well the country you call home. For now you were sat in a match worn Spain shirt surrounded by other players families, watching a woman you were hoping could be something to you and you were going to enjoy just that.
When the teams came out for warm ups your eyes zeroed in on the dark haired woman who’s name was printed across your back. Leila looked straight in your direction with a slightly apprehensive look that changed into a wide grin the moment she locked eyes with you. She was obviously slightly worried you wouldn’t show up so in a hope to put the woman’s worries more at bay you gave her a small wave and a subtle wink. When she had asked you to come a couple nights ago she had put so many ‘don’t worry if you can’t’ and ‘you probably have better plans’ that you were kind of expecting the apprehension. Apprehension you were hoping to squish out with showing up and being around as much as the woman wanted because you were sure you wanted to be here.
You saw Mapi come up behind her with a smirk on her lips which meant the two of you’s silent interaction had been spotted by the blonde haired defender. You watched on as Leila spin around and chased the defender for whatever she said. If you were closer you would have heard the “Dios mío get married already!” And seen the shade of pink Leila cheeks were even before that remark. Instead you laughed as the two friends messed around in the most care free way for a few minutes before the game mask slipped on and they started warming up.
The game was tense from the start. You could feel the nervous energy coming from both teams playing, which you were not surprised about being as it was a winner takes all match. Spain had the extra breathing room of just needing the draw but you knew they would not be happy with going through like that. Especially as that also relied on Germany winning their game, they wouldn’t want to go through because of that.
Spain had dominated the possession and ball over the first 30 minutes when Leila got pushed off the pitch as she was tracking back. You watched as she picked up the ball and turned towards the referee who was signalling a throw in to Denmark. You could see the annoyance on the older woman’s face and you wouldn’t admit it out loud but when she slammed the ball onto the turf in a display of pure frustration, you were a little too hot for it to just be the outside temperatures cause.
What you weren’t expecting was for the woman to look over at you as she turned to reset herself ready for the throw. When she did and your eyes locked you mouthed ‘Calma’ and gave her the most encouraging smile you could. That seemed to do the trick because the scowl on her face smoothed out and the determined look passed back into her features.
That booking was about the best part of the first half and as the women made there way to the tunnel you were pleasantly surprised to see Leila's eyes seeking you out once again as she walked past. With a soft smile and a nod she happily followed the rest of her teammates down into the changing rooms. God you hoped they scored in the second half, you really wanted to see the silly side of the woman after the game.
When they all came out for the second half you were disappointed to see Leila in the tracksuit not in her kit. You knew the game needed a change up but you thought she was playing really well. And you might be a little biased because you were here to watch her.
You watched the second half go by a lot slower. You weren’t ashamed to admit you felt a little less enthusiastic watching now that the woman you wanted to see wasn’t tearing up the field. Never the less, you still jumped for joy and celebrated when Cordona netted the winner in the 90th minute. You chanced a look at the bench only to be met with those brown eyes staring right back, something that was becoming quite the habit. She gave you a wink before she sat back down and within 3 minutes the game was done.
You stood and clapped with the rest of the family members around you and waited for the team to walk round and sign things for fans. You had looked down to reply to a text from none other than Alexia when you heard your name being called.
“What’s more important than greeting your favourite spaniard y/n?” Leila was leaning over the railing just in front of you, a small teasing smile of her face.
Deciding two could play at this game you shrugged your shoulders and waved your phone around in her face whilst saying “How did you know Alexia just text me? You haven’t got your phone yet so she couldn’t have texted you about texting me.” You exaggerated your joke by placing you finger and thumb under your chin. Pretending you were really thinking about how she could know when all you were actually doing was winding the woman up.
“We all know who’s name is on your back babe. You can’t deny that you have a favourite and it just so happens to be me.” You couldn’t deny the sweet smile gracing the woman’s lips so you instead ducked your head to hide the growing blush on your face. She was so right and you knew she knew it too.
“You played well. I think watching you live might be my new favourite thing.” You we’re trying to take away from your embarrassment but actually ended up only making it worse for yourself. Or so you thought.
Leila's hand grabbed yours and tugged you towards the barrier separating you. Once you were face to face she pulled you in by the shoulders and berried her head in your neck. “I was really trying to impress you. I’m sorry I didn’t get to play for you the whole game. I hope what I did do was enough for you to come back.”
To say you were shocked would be an understatement. The normally confident oozing woman was currently hidden in your neck whispering words so shyly you almost didn’t know if it was your Leila you were hugging. “You were perfect. I loved all the time I got to watch and I want nothing more than to see more games of you doing what you love. If you’ll have me that is?” You weren’t sure what you were fully asking but you did know it was a round about way of asking if you would see the woman again.
“Of course. There’s not many people in this world I want here watching my games more than you.” As she said this Leila pulled away and you both caught each others eyes. “God you are beautiful.” This caused your slightly cooler cheeks to heat straight back up again.
“You aren’t so bad yourself. And if we weren’t in a stadium full of people right now I’d let this conversation continue to see where it leads but we are. You have a team to go celebrate with and cameras to avoid personal interactions from. But for the record, where this was possibly going I would let it if we were alone.” With a wink at the gobsmacked woman you blew her a kiss as you made your way up to the exit of your section.
It was only after you were out of sight that Leila fully snapped out of the haze you had her in. She was in trouble with you and she knew it. Maybe the move to Manchester next season would prove to be the best move she could make for more than just her professional career. Leila really hoped beyond hope that it was, you were special she just felt it.
“She’s got you already hasn’t she amiga?” Leila didn’t bother answering Patri, she turned and walked past her with one thing on her mind. What she wouldn’t give right now to be alone with you and take that conversation exactly where she wanted it to go. With the thoughts of your shy smile and dreams of how soft your lips could be, Leila showered and changed thinking about how and when she could next possibly see you.
There was only one thought other than kissing Leila Ouahabi swirling round your head right as you were walking out the stadium, Spain were through and that only meant one thing. England vs Spain quarter final. Now you really needed to work out where your loyalties lie. Maybe you could just support both and deal with whatever happens after the final whistle.
Internal debate in full swing, you headed for the train station. Maybe Lauren could help you work thorough this, she was the only person in the world that knew you as well as you knew yourself.

Ok as someone who has put many things in my mouth that I should not have have, and if I scale it by say x 3 if we take Alfred strength (the average human bite force is 180 psi, so I'll make Alfred's 500 at the minimum) here is what he can most likely bite through
I've bitten through leather with some difficulty (dont ask) so I'll assume he can do that with like 2 good chomps.
I've also bitten clean through a plank of wood once, it took a while, but it is possible, so Alfred bites through it slightly faster than a beaver.
General cloth like linen or cotton isnt hard to break so with the right angle, and mind you this is with human shaped teeth so tearing isnt very good, he could probably bite it out in one go, or grind it and fray it very easily.
Hemp rope and burlap is significantly harder and much itchier, and considering how tightly everything is woven, it's kind of as hard to do as leather straight up, and the fibre makes it even slightly harder.
As for sheet metal Ive managed to dent it but never cut through it, I think because if how flat sheet metal is, hed be able to do this as we do with aluminium.
Most plastics are easy for people so hed have no trouble
I've managed to bite through a feldspar and flourite, but nothing harder, so I'll bet he could probably bite through quartz and maybe topaz if we're pushing it.
I may return with further findings.

the human mouth is so lamely shaped for biting inopportune things because we have cheeks. big cheeks for holding food. biting stuff like rocks would be so much simpler if we could reach our flat, grinding molars with more ease. and while incisors are meant for tearing, you're right that human incisors are not meant for wood or metal, but rather for vegetal material (frugivory, folivory).
but also consider that human teeth can still very much break skin. the most dangerous part of a human bite, though, is the bacteria in our mouths rather than the puncture wound itself per se,,,
also was it you that put in the tags "mohs hardness scale but it's if alfred can bite through them"? because i loved this tag so much sldkfjhgsads i stan this new mohs hardness scale. also i am SO sorry to tag you again but @if-you-like-pina-colada-s made a very very wonderful addition to my ramblings regarding bite force. you postulate 500 psi at least (fun fact - that's 100 more psi than the grip strength of an average adult bald eagle, bc i'm silly and think about grip strength, too). piña got a number for the stronger nations at ~3,000 psi, which approaches a crocodile's bite force, and if you've seen what a croc can do with their sheer amount of closing power,,,, ough. i find this to be a wide range full of fun to play with.
also i think i went insane one night when i had to remember that in canon we see a probably 3-year-old alfred lift and swing a bison. if we assume your average three-year-old male weighs about 31.8 lbs (CDC) while a male american bison (Bison bison) can weigh up to 2,200 lbs. if we are to believe these shenanigans, that's 69.18x alfred's body weight if the bison is at its heaviest. even a female, which tops at 1200 lbs, is still 37.74x. he's the real ant-man fr!! because i'm telling you someone reminded me of that bit and i was sitting like bro what the hell,,,
this whole conversation is just making me want to compare alfred's skull and jaw to a robust australopithecine. like okay paranthropus robustus boy. gonna start calling him a gorilla fr. 1300 psi? 1500 like a jaguar? fuck this dude do NOT put your mouth anywhere near me. please fuck off immediately.

#1894 - Phormium tenax - New Zealand Flax
@purrdence is in New Zealand for a month, so of course I asked her to photograph every species she sees, or at least those distinctive enough that I think I can ID them.
The one with the four-meter tall flower spikes and strap-like leaves in the middle distance there, at Sandfly Bay, is one of the most iconic plants from Aoteoroa, and is variously known as harakeke in Māori; and New Zealand hemp.

Taxonomically, you might find it listed in the Phormiaceae, Asphodelaceae, Xanthorrhoeaceae, or currently, the Hemerocallidoideae subfamily of the Asphodels. Plant systematics is a headache at the best of times. I’ve posted related species from Australia before, but I’m going to have to check exactly which genera those are first thanks to the revisions - my tags are probably no longer accurate.
As you might have guessed from ‘flax’ and ‘hemp’, it’s a important textile crop to the indigenous peoples of the island, and Europeans found plenty of uses as well after they showed up. Indeed, the hara in the Māori name is a remnant of the Austronesian root *paŋudaN (via Proto-Oceanic *padran) referring to Pandanus plants with similar leaves used for weaving. Pandanus and some other Oceanian textile crops don’t grow well or at all that far south, so the Māori invented all kinds of uses and ways to prepare this one. Captain Cook wrote in “Of the leaves of these plants, with very little preparation, they (the Māori) make all their common apparel; and of these they make also their strings, lines and cordage.”. Also baskets, mats and fishing nets (up to a kilometer long!) from undressed flax.
Joseph Jenner Merrett,1846 - Hone Heke, Harriet (Heke's wife), and Kawiti. Harriet (Hariata) is on the left in a European skirt, a Māori cloak worn as a stole around her upper body and tied at the waist, leaning on Heke's shoulder. Heke stands centrally, holding a rifle and wearing a short checked flax and feather cloak and flax skirt. His uncle Kawiti is on the right in a flax cloak, holding a taiaha.
The Māori also used (EDIT: And still use) various parts of the plant for medical purposes, and thickly woven or plaited flax as armour during the Musket Wars and later New Zealand Wars.
Phormium tenax is Native to NZ and Norfolk Island, but is now grown as a ornamental in many parts of the world, and as an ecological problem on St Helena where they ran a textile industry based on the stuff from the late 1800s to 1966. In its home range the flowers are an important food plant for nectar-feeding birds, and as coastal vegetation forms breeding habitat for the Yellow-eyed Penguin.
The blades of the plant contain cucurbitacins, better known from the pumpkin family, which make the foliage terribly bitter to herbivores.

wip wednesday 🌸
i was tagged by our beloved pals @squidyyy23 and @ardent-fox in one of my favorite activities! and i actually have something to share this time, because i just started working on something new. i've got a chapter written of something that will be formatted a bit like cinematic in that I'll be posting a chapter a day once it's finished, but it's thematically different. i have no idea when it will be done because, again, i only have one chapter (mostly) completed. but hopefully soon! who knows. anyway, here's the beginning of said chapter in which our boys indulge in some uhhhh shibari. because i've lost my mind maybe. not really nsfw below the cut, but under a cut anyway just in case. this is subject to heavy editing, of course. 🔥
Ian went fucking hard when Mickey expressed interest in rope.
It was a casual comment to start, really, just wanting to tell Ian about something he’d seen in porn. But as the conversation deepened, when Ian really wanted to know how Mickey felt about it, he conveyed that although he’d never been tied up like that, he was starting to think he’d like to try it.
Ian enthusiastically dove in head first, and actual play didn’t come until over a month after the first time Mickey brought it up.
He signed up for four expensive weeks of introductory workshops, something Mickey didn’t even know existed. He resisted attending with Ian, and to his relief Ian didn’t try to make him, understanding that he’d feel a little out of his depth exploring all of this in a studio full of strangers.
There were also the online tutorials which Ian studied with all the seriousness of a freshman honor student. He purchased lengths of the highest quality hemp rope he could find, and he spent solo afternoons experimenting with self-ties in the bedroom mirror, sat on the floor in his underwear with his chest bound in simple harnesses, legs wrapped intricately.
Their sex life persisted all the while, obviously. But tying Mickey was off the table until Ian felt confident enough in his ability to do it safely and well. He wanted to do it right. He wanted Mickey to feel good.
And now Mickey is finally reaping the rewards of his husband’s studying and solo practice, sitting naked in the middle of their bed as Ian moves around him and weaves him in, harness taking shape.
He's no stranger to being restrained, but this is different. He immediately understands why people like this. It feels good, the way his husband has to pay attention to and work with his body, has to touch him in a way he never has. Bind him in a way he never has. Around his ribs. Beneath and over his pecs, between them, framing them. Over his shoulders. Woven and knotted in the back. Tail of the rope pulled, tightening all of it snug against him. He releases a sigh when Ian finishes, and his hands come up to pet at the rope crossing his chest. He likes how it presses into his skin. He likes that he feels encased, even though it’s a relatively small amount of rope compared to other ties he’s seen. He likes that it's Ian that put him in this. He feels hot.
Ian pets over his shoulders, leans forward and kisses the back of his neck.
“Feelin’ alright so far?” he asks.
“Yeah,” Mickey mumbles. “You’re good at this.”

All That's Left (v: Far Cry New Dawn)
Following the Collapse/the world’s destruction in 2018 and her lottery selection to go on a French resource-searching convoy to North America in 2028 (at the age of 48), Brianne’s life is reduced to the contents of one canvas backpack. This is what she, the convoy's and later, the Highwaymen's horticulturalist, carries and keeps until she dies (shot and killed while gardening one crisp fall morning during an attack on the Chapter's home base).
A Swiss Army knife with multiple tools including a nail file, scissors, and tweezer.
A Burberry Check Cashmere scarf and fingerless leather gloves to work the garden.
Her second pair of clothes.
A flip mirror and brush.
Amber glass jars of homemade cream for the face and hands that smell of lavender, a healing balm, and a vial of hemp oil.
Two black cover moleskin journals: one contains notes for the Highwaymen Chapter’s garden management. The other is personal; on occasion, she writes thoughts that need expressing but with no one to express them to. It is just shy of two pages full when she dies.
Three well-used pencils and a broken sharpener (she uses her the Swiss Army knife instead).
A soft leather-bound, 4x6 photo flip book with plastic sleeves and button closure filled with pictures of her family and loved ones. Among them is one of her sister and her on Victoria Peak in Hong Kong, with her mother and other Guyots (material side) at a seaside restaurant in Cannes, a picture of her garden in full bloom in Hampstead, one of her father and her and her sister when they were children, selfies of her and Santiago on Rook, another she snuck when he was cooking dinner, one of his beachside shack as well.
On the back of every photograph are notes written in pencil: who, when, and where the picture was taken, and of thoughts and memories of that person (death dates are kept here as well). There are also sorrows penciled in later: “I miss you, wherever you are.”
This hand-size album is thick because in between the photos she’s tucked little saved mementos. Behind a picture of her mother is a vintage Chanel heart pendant she kept after she died (of cancer) in their bunker. Inside a piece of folded paper is an island flower from Rook given to her by Santiago, which she pressed in a book long ago (as she did with all the flowers he gave her). Some sleeves contain favorite pages ripped from broken books she used to own. More random is a tea tag from the very last cup of bagged black tea she drank.
A horribly worn, spine-broken paperback copy of Pride and Prejudice.
A small, beach wood flower carved and gifted to her for Christmas by Santiago almost two decades prior. Its edges are worn and its grooves are smooth from being handled often.
Not in her bag but usually always on her person is a platinum whistle on a long chain, a wide-brim hat, and a gauze scarf appropriate for warmer weather. She takes care to protect herself from the sun.

This is a very famous photo, which has been featured online in many lists of "handsome samurai" and has also been used in advertising. It was taken in 1880 (Meiji period) and shows 20-year-old Oda Nobuyoshi, who was a dentist, having just finished his studies in Edo.
There's a lesser known photo of Nobuyoshi in the collection of his great-grandson, Oda Hidemasa, who carries on the family business of dentistry at Oda Dental Clinic in Kochi City, which was founded in 1925 and is still going strong with a new building next to the original one.
Nobuyoshi certainly knew how to pose for a picture. 😅

Speaking of photos, there are a disproportionately large number of known photos of Dr. Matsumoto Ryojun still in existence. Here are a few I've been able to find, with descriptions where available.
Dr. Matsumoto, sitting front left, with Dr. Johannes Pompe van Meerdervoort, seated front right, and fellow doctors in Nagasaki.
Matsumoto went to Nagasaki in summer of 1857 as a student of Western studies at the Nagasaki Naval Training Center, where, among other things, he studied medicine under Pompe, a Dutch army surgeon.
While at first a group of 12 medical students met at the home of Takashima Shuan for lectures on biology, chemistry, anatomy, and pathology, by November of that year Pompe established a separate school of Western medicine.
Although the Nagasaki Naval Training Center closed in 1860 and the Dutch staff left, Pompe remained and opened Japan's first western-style hospital, Nagasaki Yojosho, in 1861. (The location is now Nagasaki University's medical school.)

A little “Today I Learned” write-up of notes regarding textiles in the Edo period:
+ The Kansai region, which is the area surrounding the imperial capital of Kyoto and the port of Osaka, was important in both the silk textile industry (mostly around Kyoto) and, after the 16th Century, the cotton industry (mostly around Osaka).
+ Cotton was introduced to Japan from Korea in the 1400s.
+ By the beginning of the Edo period (the early 1600s), cotton had become the primary material used in commoners’ clothing in most of Japan, replacing materials made from other types of plant fibers.
That’s not to say things weren’t still commonly made from asa (hemp or ramie) or from other plant fibers such as mulberry or wisteria - they were, especially in rural areas - but the more expensive cotton quickly became the most common choice.
On a side note: in some translations, you might see the English word linen as a translation for asa, which isn’t technically correct as linen is made from flax, which was not cultivated in Edo period Japan. The first flax in Japan is grown in Hokkaido in 1871.
+ Aside from the large amounts of cotton planted for the cotton textile trade, it was often grown in small quantities sufficient just for household consumption.
+ The Edo period and its bureaucracies placed a great deal of emphasis on laws and regulations that reinforced class structure, such as Aizu’s rules specifying which color haori-himo could be worn by which class of samurai, or Tosa’s rules forbidding low-ranking samurai from wearing certain footwear.
One sumptuary law passed by the Tokugawa shogunate limited purple outer garments to nobility and high-ranking samurai. Another banned the wearing of red outer garments, which were dyed with expensive saffron dye.
However, because those restrictions didn’t apply to inner linings or undergarments, wealthy commoners and low-ranking samurai families still found creative ways to incorporate these colors into their clothing.
On a side note: This is a good article on how silly sumptuary regulations got during the Edo period. Things like roof beam length, gold leaf decoration on household goods, and clothing materials could get you arrested.
+ On the other end of the spectrum, garments dyed blue using indigo were always a safe choice for the masses, from the lower ranks of samurai to the very bottom rungs of Edo society.
Indigo was inexpensive and could be used to produce a large variety of blue shades which, combined with the right materials and patterns, decorations, or embroideries could make up garments from the cheapest everyday kimono of a farmer to the fine silks of a wealthy merchant’s wife.
But, your choice of textiles could also easily oust you as a country bumpkin in the big city. Reportedly, even Edo’s teahouse girls laughed at samurai whose haori were lined in the cheap blue fabrics. (If I find the source again, there was an insult along the line of “blue sleeves”, but I don’t want to misquote it.)
+ There are no powered looms to produce textiles until after the Meiji restoration. The first powered looms are introduced to Japan in the 1870s but do not come into widespread use until the 1910s.
+ There is no domestic wool production during the Edo period: wool fabrics had to be imported, which made them expensive and rarely used. However, there is some wool use during the Edo period, specifically in samurai’s fire costumes (火事装束, kaji shozuku), obviously for practical reasons since wool is not as flammable as cotton or silk, and in travel cloaks. Wool becomes more common with the Meiji restoration, first to make Western-style uniforms and later to produce general Western-style clothing for those who could afford it.
