Joel turns around. Martyn is standing there. His eyes are a burning red that gives Joel the heebie-jeebies. If anyone would know to be scared, it's Joel! He would! He'd recognize a mad dog if he saw one anywhere!

Anyway, all of that is to say that his high-pitched scream had been totally justified. "Oh my word Martyn what are you doing here?" he says, clutching his hand over his heart, several feet further back than he'd been thirty seconds ago.

Martyn snorts. "Is the sign not for me? Figured there was no one else it could be for."

"The what?"

"The sign."

Joel turns around. Outside his base, the other Mounders have hung a helpful banner: "SORRY EVERYONE YOU LOVE IS DEAD <3".

He'd told them it was kind of rude, hanging that up. Sort of made light of the whole thing, really. His wife and Mumbo and Jimmy had died, guys, don't be idiots about it. Bdubs had loudly told him that he was TRYING to be helpful, Joel, geez, why don't you appreciate his efforts? Pearl had shrugged and said they don't exactly make cards for this kind of thing. Joel's pretty sure they do, actually but...

Sorry everyone you love is dead. Hah.

"My wife is dead, Martyn," Joel says.

"Who, Lizzie or Jimmy?" Martyn says, weirdly dark. "Anyway, my husband's dead, so--"

"Your what?"

"Mumbo and I got married one time. Everyone forgets that for some reason."

Joel has to think about it a while. "Huh."

"Yeah. Anyway, you've still got the other Mounders, huh? Don't know what you're crying about. Thought the sign had to be for me. Thought I'd show up. Get cake. Kill some people. You know how it is."

"If there's a TNT minecart in my base, the first thing I do after I turn red is kill you," Joel says.

"That's not really how it works this time," Martyn says.

"Yeah, well, screw you," Joel says. "Also, they didn't make me any cake. I should ask them for that next. Hah. A cake."

"You know, maybe don't ask for that? Parties tend to go wrong in this game."

"And who's fault is that, huh?"

"Hey, don't look at me! Or, do. Since I'm going to kill everyone, on account of everyone I love being dead and all. Really convenient excuse for murder, that. I should use it more often, if it didn't involve the crippling grief," Martyn says.

"Oh, please. At least you tend to have people to love in the first place," Joel snaps.

"Oh, right, that is your curse, isn't it?" Martyn says. "Sorta broke it last time, but you do tend to get isolated and a bit crazy. Hey, I wonder if we're the ones who traded, actually what with the whole wolf thing."

Joel blinks. "What?"

"Oh, we're all cursed," Martyn says. "After all, They like it better that way. Hey, do you think Jimmy's curse transferred to Lizzie, got cancelled out by the fact Lizzie tends to die stupidly, or got broken? Personally, I'm thinking random fluke, when it comes to canary nonsense."

Joel stares at Martyn. His throat is dry. "What?"

Martyn stares back. "Hey, I'm the mad dog this time," Martyn says. "You probably shouldn't be the one growling."

"Well then, you should stop saying stupid shit," Joel says.

"Stupid? Please. It's obvious everyone is cursed. Nothing to be done about it but to play into the--"

"NO ONE IS BLUMIN' CURSED," Joel shouts, his vision suddenly red and blurry in a way it shouldn't be when he's still on yellow. "NO ONE IS BLUMIN' CURSED. THERE'S NO SUCH THING! YOU'RE JUST, JUST MAKIN' UP REASONS IT ISN'T ALL A TRAGEDY THAT EVERYONE I LOVE IS FUCKING DEAD, MAKING UP REASONS THAT IT--NO ONE IS CURSED! IT JUST HAPPENS! IT JUST HAPPENS! IT JUST FUCKING HAPPENS! AND WOULDN'T IT BE BLUMIN' NICE IF THERE WERE A HIGHER POWER BUT THERE ISN'T SO SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT CURSES!"

He's panting. Martyn is staring at him. He stares back, a snarl on his teeth, the echoes of wolves and of grief, grief, grief, grief playing at the back of his throat.

"Joel?" Martyn says, hesitant.

"My wife is fucking dead. My best friend is fucking dead. One of my new possible best friends is fucking dead. Sorry about your husband, I guess? Get out."

"Bold thing to say to the guy who can kill--"

"I SAID GET OUT!"

Martyn stares at Joel a moment longer, and Joel finds he's not scared of the madness in his eyes at all.

Martyn leaves.

Joel realizes he's crying. The tears turn into giant, ugly sobs. Sorry everyone you love is dead. Sorry everyone you love is dead. Sorry everyone you love is dead.

"I blumin' hate caring about people," he says to no one at all through choked breaths, and he kicks a rock at the banner for good measure. It pokes a little hole through it and bounces off the dick-shaped tower behind it.

"Someone really should have made both of us a blumin' cake, they should," he says next, and he sits down until Pearl runs over, having heard the shouting. His face is red and his vision is still swimming. She stares at him, gathers him in her arms, and cries with him, and for the life of him, he doesn't know if that's any better.

Life series!Grian a survivor not a traitor

Alternative title: I thought about Life series!Grian for too long again and because Tumblr doesn't have a character limit I'm putting my thoughts on the Internet.

I'm not normal in how while watching Cleo's secret life final episode there was a silent agreement that Grian was no loyal when they had that conversation with Scott when they were trying to convince Gem to be on their side.

"I mean, don't ask about Grian's loyalty"

And Scott response was "I have never seen a man drop a pair of sunglasses quicker in my life. As soon as Joel dropped, the bad boy glasses were off"

To which Grian responded "My boys died, what did you want from me?"

Like how is Grian seen has someone that betrays or isn't loyal to his teammates? HE IS LOYAL, HE IS JUST TOO COWARD. He has never betray a teammate first.

Look, for example to third life: He promised Scar his life, and altough he warns the rest of players at the beginning about the scams Scar was doing, he always do what Scar did, he helped him, he create traps and didn't thought on betraying him until Scar betray him first, until Scar did it, when he recovered he was so mad and just jump to them shouting out that Scar was a traitor. AND THEN when Scar apologies and offers Grian to have the win he refuses because he still considers Scar his ally, and then the cactus ring happens and he feels bad, he feels bad for killing Scar, I don't think a traitor would be that bad to the point of killing themselves

Then in last life, where he killed two of his four teammates and started his reputation as "allies killer". First of all, when he turned red he had the oppurtinity to just turn on them, sure, he went back to the nether and threat Mumbo, but it was mostly joking and I think the most messed up thing was how afraid he was of not having any teammates that he was willed his best friend but couldn't find the courage on himself. The next episode he has already a plan to go back with his team AND get Joel out of red, like- he planned a way to be back with his allies and get his new ally (that if I had to remember you, was the one that killed him, but Grian was perfectly with him because he understands it was for the red impulses) out of red. Once he gets his yellow life back and goes back to the southlanders for a happy teammate reunion and discovers Jimmy was exiled he doesn't hesitate in saying he doesn't want him back because he betrayed the southlands; they have the votation, he says 'no' inmediatly and is surprised that other people said yes but doesn't oppose to it.

When Mumbo and Jimmy turned red he didn't try to kill them until their few attempts of murder, he did not attack Mumbo when he tried to end cristal him, he didn't attack them, even when they had that terrible attempt of a trap for him and Martyn. He attacked them when Jimmy physically tries to punch him to the trap that he looses the little patient he had left and kills him and then Mumbo for trying to stop him. Then Martyn betrayed him because of the boogeyman curse and when Grian finds Impulse he sounds so wounded because of that but even then he doesn't try to go for him, he makes a plan with Impulse to put a Wither on the base of team B.E.A.S.T because they were one of the biggest threats. Once Impulse died he was back with Joel and he didn't betray or left him, even when he had the opportunity to join bigger alliances than him.

With that out of the way we arrive to the fatal Double Life, I feel that this is the catalyst of Grian's character misinterpretation, mostly because of the cheat situation but: 1, that him and Scar and soulmates doesn't mean they are allies (see the two pair of soulmates that were literally divorce) and 2, he really tried to protect Scar and be a good ally. He made a base, he warned Scar to not go to places he could die and he even trust him with the sugar cane, when he lost it he trust Scar the sand he isn't even that angry or dissapointed on him. It also applies to BigB, he was a great ally with him too! He gave him sugarcane, cookies, tnt, they didn't attack eachother and the only reason why he killed him was because he forgot BigB was soulmates with Ren in his red madness, he even had a funeral for him and apologise for killing him. That is not traitor behaviour if you ask me.

And then finally Limited Life (my excuse and the real season I wanted to talk because I haven't left that bread bridge), the season where Grian is in his most loyal teammate arc of all. He is a coward of course, he plays safe always, in every single season, and that is what ends up being one of the reasons why Joel ends up dead. The bad boys were too reckless and idiots (in an affectionate way, I love them) for him to not fear for their lives constantly, and yes they almost felt apart, but that was after Jimmy killed Grian. Grian left Jimmy get the kills, they were trying to save him, when Tango (the boogeyman) killed Jimmy he didn't took the two hours from him because that would had permakill him, at the end Jimmy didn't die because of him, he just slip from the platform. They had the funeral and all, he left diamonds at his grave as an offer.

With Joel it is a little different, Grian didn't betray him, he didn't kill him, but he wasn't there because he was afraid of dying, in the middle episode 7 Joel wants to murder the family because they wanted to kill Jimmy "It wasn't their fault he died" trying to persude him to not do that to which Joel answers "I'm gonna send Scar a message" and Grian almost begs "No Joel, you got to be careful or I'm gonna be alone. I'm gonna be a singular bad boy" but he doesn't follow him, he doesn't go to kill people with him because they don't have a plan and it's obvious they will die.

Grian is a survivor, when he notices things are getting ugly he looks for a way out. When Joel goes on his murderous rampage after they talk to BigB he reunite again with him and Pearl to offer himself as a ally, making a list of all the things he is useful for, selling himself because he knows he will be alone at the end of that episode and alone players are easy targets. At first he wants them to become bad boys, he doesn't want to leave the mark, but they refused, and a survivor has to do what they have to do. He isn't even hiding why he wants to be friends with them and they don't have a problem with that.

"I have already kind of accepted he's gonna die in a way" he says while making a trap for the nosy neighbours while watching how Joel died (again)

"I mean, you completely abandon him at this point" Pearl points out (and if I watched Pearl more I could talk about how Life Series Pearl seems to have really trust issues with people that is so confident in leaving allies behind because she keeps repeating how Grian is not with Joel, she is so 'I will die for you', and it was prove in the final of secret life, I love her so much).

And Grian doesn't deny it, he does try to excuse his behavior with a "Joel reaches a point where he just loses his mind completely and he was way past that a while ago. Jimmy's death has kind of got an adverse affect on him" just to be silent a second, finish placing the TNT cards and going "But I will have to go and see if he is okay in a minute"

He cares about his last truly ally even when he knows Joel will die, Grian can't just stand still and wait for it to happen "I'm gonna have to go and see if Joel is okay. He must be on less than an hour and if I don't say bye, I'm gonna regret it"

And once he is with Joel again he doesn't hide that he has allied with the nosy neighbours from him. It is the first thing he tells him actually "I've just been like making new friends because you have lost your mind". That is not betray behavior, that is not 'I'm gonna back stab you' or 'I'm leaving you now'. And Joel gets it, he gets that Grian is too coward to confront people directly, that he is not a pvper and accepts him like that. And then they have this conversation on Skynet while trying to get kills for Joel:

"Yeah, do you know what would be really funny? If I just knocked you off right now but I won't, I won't, I won't do that"

"I would do that for you. I would do that for you. Bad boys for life"

HOW IS THAT NOT LOYALTY? Grian, the one that is afraid of death, willing to die for his ally? Without hesitation answering that yes, he would do that for Joel. We have the hole "Kill me Joel. KILL ME" dialogue and scene after that even. Grian didn't wanted Joel to died, when he has five minutes Grian tries to tell him to kill him again before Joel denies. When they are going to see who Joel can kill is when he starts hesitating because he would lose two hole hours to get Joel back to just one hour, he is balancing saving his allies with keeping himself alive and at the end Joel's rampage ends up killing him and Grian is without his bad boy.

He enters in full survivor mode and downplays Joel's death in front of everybody but contradicting his discourse of 'It was getting expensive to keep him alive' once everyone is gone he tells Pearl and BigB they should have a funeral for Joel fully knowing they weren't his allies. He makes Joel a grave too, like they did with Jimmy and says some words for him. How could that not be loyalty? The last episode he uses the bad boy skin, all season he forgot to use it and had to be remember by the others to use it, and then he puts it even if he 'isn't a bad boy anymore' to honor his allies.

I think the most close he was to betray an ally was when at the end he enacted the sword and ally with Impulse and Etho whitouth talking it with Pearl and it ending with both Etho and Pearl killing eachother to be in peace. When they first met after Grian enactes the sword and Pearl goes to kill he tries to stop her, but he doesn't defend her (or Etho), he just tells them to stop. Grian character just... always leaves his allies do what they want? even if it is not the best for them, it is something he does with every one of his alliance really, he does his own and they do his own, Cleo actually points it out on their last episode while they are talking to the heart fundation and Grian gets bored and goes to do his plan to get Gem and Cleo is like 'yeah, he does his own things, don't pay attention to him'.

In Secret Life he was also truly loyal to the roomates, in part I think because he was afraid of loosing his only oportunitty to get some friends after three episodes of loneliness. Grian is always so desesperate to make allies every season, make people like him because it would mean someone would fight for him. The rommates is a very solid team and he reassures himself and they how he made the correct decision. They are not as attach as he was with his bad boys (that, talking about them, he had this weird no-alliance with Joel, changing hearts and not really attacking eachother until the very end) but it is stable.

Grian includes them in his plans, if they are not on board he respects it, but when he thinks it is something that can protect them he insists. He insists they should go to Joel's platform where he hide from the zombie apocalypse because it is the easiest to defend and they were chase by the people with more health on the server. When Etho died they took it seriously, when they are scaping he goes first through the portal that belongs to Gem, Impulse and Scott because "No point both of us dying" he could have left Cleo go first to be more safe but he didn't, he tries to make a trap to get Gem and the Scotts and he tells Cleo to back off because they would get hurt if they stay to close because he will manually activate it.

My conclusion? Grian is not a traitor, he has never betray his teammates until they cross the line first. He is a bad teammate? Oh, totally, not because he won't provide his allies with supplies or plans but because the moment it becomes dangerous, too risky for his constant safe plays he distants himself because he doesn't like risky plays, he is an expert in the 'long game' even if he won't win anything with it, he also has some kind of honor (if you want to put it that way) he won't attack the weakest unless he is corner to do it to keep himself alive, he always goes for the biggest alliance, the people with most hearts, the people with most potential of giving to bring them down with the rest.

Again, I write this mini kinda essays on the fly and don't check facts too much but Grian himself implying he is not loyal had me "are you sure about that?" and then this was write on my drafts. Liveblogging Grian's Session 3 Secret Life POV:

slkdjfsldkfjslkdjfslksdjf-

Grian, who is now soulbound to Joel, rushes over and pines for him in a needy way. Joel brushes him off because "One second, I'm bonding." Grian: "I might need you to un-bond. Joel..."

Joel really did take one look at Grian's task and immediately throw himself off a cliff so Grian took damage.

Grian adopts the role of Joel's bodyguard.

Joel runs to his wife who calls Grian creepy. Joel and Lizzie start fighting and Grian just stands there like "... Aren't you married?"

Scar asks Joel to undress in front of him and Grian screeches.

This all happens within 5 minutes.

Grian: "I'll be a good friend and just shut up."

Joel left Grian to his own devices and he immediately went home and burned down his staircase base.

Me, still playing the video while typing this liveblog: "Lol, I know this isn't the vibe, but you could spin this around and interpret it like he's lonely and wants to move in with Joel." Grian, immediately: "My house is on fire, Joel! Now I can move in with you! <3"

sldkfj the irony of Grian saying "I don't want to be friends with Tim; I did that last time" (Bad Boys in Limited Life) while hanging out with Joel, the other Bad Boy.

Joel: "I might just re-roll for a hard task. For one thing, if I fail and lose 10 hearts, then you lose them too-" Grian: "WHAAAAT???"

Joel chilling and watching Grian fight a zombie: "Protect me Grian."

Jimmy: "He seems to be following Joel around a lot." Grian, dying inside: "We're not that close."

sdkjflh Grian mocking Mumbo like "How can you be so into cars and not know how to drive a camel? It's only a few letters' difference!"

I love Grian and Mumbo crawling and Grian turns around and kicks Mumbo in the face like "Can you feel the Feather Falling IV on those babies?"

I've only seen Tango's and half of Grian's POVs so far, but I'm guessing Mumbo's task isn't necessarily to kill the camel, but to prevent Scar from riding the camel? That's hilarious. Can't argue with the logic that Scar cannot ride a dead camel.

Obsessed with Joel and Grian standing under the cherry tree as the blossoms fall around them and Grian's like "My best friend!" and Joel just leans in and says "I demand your heart."

Grian: "... Maybe we should go somewhere more private for that? Your wife is right there." sldkfj

I appreciate Joel towering up while Grian starts screaming that the Yellows are coming and he needs to keep going higher, all while Martyn is trying to scramble up to him. I presume the rule is that if you're calling someone out on their task, you have to do it face to face, so you can avoid this by running away? That's hilarious.

Joel looks so comfy in his hoodie skin. Good for him.

Grian, chasing endermen and trying to hit them with boats: "Not even this enderman wants to be my friend!!"

Grian: "I have an idea. If I want friends, I have to make my base friend-shaped."

Cracking up at everyone in the courthouse getting jumpscared by the dramatic music sting. Grian cackling and clapping down one hand like "I lay down the rules in this server!"

I feel like we can definitely run with Scar watching Mumbo face the Secretkeeper, which puffs out its little red dust clouds, and muttering to Grian: "I just had a vision of Mumbo's eyes turning red for a second." </3

sldkjf Scott's task being to get people to say "Love you" back to him. He starts listing off people who said it back, then says "Pearl didn't say it back." The divorce quartet drama continues.

Grian: "I've got Feather Falling IV! Watch this!" /takes fall damage.

Wheezing at Grian watching BigB run off like "I don't know game BigB's playing, but it's not Secret Life."

Lizzie: Joel likes to win. When he was 8, a little Club Scout friend of his bragged that they could sell the most cookies.

Lizzie: Damned if Joel didn't walk the neighborhood till he got blisters on his feet, and won by 10 boxes.

Lizzie: Best part is, Joel wasn't even a Club Scout.

BDubs: What's the straightest thing you've ever done?

Etho: *sighs*

Etho: I killed a man.

Doc: You either buckle down and do your work or you'll end up at McDonalds.

BDubs: We're going to McDonalds if I don't do my work?

Grian: Well we were driving and there was a deer in the road, so I said "Scar, deer!"

Doc: ...And what did Scar do?

Grian: ...He said "Yes, Honey?"

Teacher: Your child was in a fight.

Scar: Oh no, that's terrible!

Grian: Did they win?

Shelby: So, are you two friends?

Joey: Yes.

Katherine: No.

Jimmy: I'm in love with you.

Scott: We called off the prank war last night at midnight, dork.

Jimmy: I know.

Impulse, tearing up: Really...?

Scott: Yeah, being that pretty must be tiring.

Joey: Will you two shut up? Some of us are lonely.

Scar, to Mumbo: If BDubs doesn't say "I'm King of the world" within an hour on that boat, I will give you my next pay check.

BDubs, within 5 minutes of getting on the boat: I'M KING OF THE WORLD!!!

Lizzie: Joel annoyed me today so I told him that I can't wait to see what he has planned for our special day tomorrow.

Hi I just read all of traveling thieves and it was so so good! Perfect mix of angst and comfort, it hurts so well :) I'm so excited to see where it goes next

I love how pearl and gem are vibing assassinating people together, they really are just girlbossing their way around

Gem getting bloodthirsty over the missing payment and then the guy offers pearl and she's like fine. I could use a companion I guess. But I will remember this. And then said companion helps her Kill and she's having fun and they're having a good time scandalizing people about an avian acting like a normal person but they can't do anything about bc that's The Slayer, you can't just FIGHT her about it she's got a broadsword dripping with enchants that she wields like it's nothing, and suddenly, oh, when was the last time gem had a friendship like this?

And tango and zed! Tango my beloved, poor guy he's doing his best, zed is also doing his best, and zed just running up to him and interviewing him excitedly and tango just being like 'uh. this is happening I guess' as their first meeting? Love it

Also zed flexing his master-smith seal to get them places and also just going 'i do what I want, YOU depend on ME' when he confronts heath about the water incident? 10/10

I'm also excited to see how Scott and Jimmy are doing, maybe he wants to be a free bird!!! I also love the narrative of Scott gets captured, he's in this new place and he immediately goes up to sit next to the only guy in the yard sitting alone, and he tries to escape and his new friend with the gold wings helps and then tries to tell him not to do that bc it'll just make it worse on him and Scott goes fine. I'll do it myself. and he DOES it and Jimmy goes well hell. Alright I'm going with him

Like at the beginning, grians still new to this whole situation with people being Nice to him, mumbo and scar are animatedly discussing a plan and grians in the corner just. Stressing. And now he's gotten more used to this and he's laughing (with bird noises!) and flying and quipping and committing petty revenge on mumbo lol and then something happens and he's Stressing again bc it's only been A Month

I was SO SURE I connected some dots bc of the 'between two books, right where he always left it' plus mumbo putting stuff back after grian hits the bookshelf plus how attached grian is to it (I am Looking at how he's described as treating it like glass Twice) that the going flying paper was going to go missing but apparently I have not connected the dots lol

I also love how grians tiny and then scar and mumbo are So Much Taller than him lol

In conclusion: I think I went a bit feral writing this but I really enjoyed the fic 👍 :)

I cannot tell you how happy receiving something like this makes me! All the details and thoughts! I love seeing someones thoughts about my AU like this for all the different groups going around! I'm glad the angst and comfort balance out for you, I know it's a dark fantasy AU but I also want it to have that sort of warm fuzzy edge to it, like everyone is being taken care of now, even if things were bad in the past.

Zed is 100% the BEST he knows what he is WORTH my boy look at him go I love him. Tiny tiny birb Grian! He's so sweet and traumatized poor lil guy 😭

Pearl and Gem are MENANCES they are TERRORS and I love them! Yes, yes, Pearl has had a bit more time to get more comfortable with Gem, and her experience navigating the system has also left her less shattered than Jimmy or Grian, for reasons that have been mentioned and will also later be explored in more detail.

ok i did this last season and did! poorly! but that’s ok let’s see if i can predict the placings for everybody this season, since it looks like next session might be the last. in the event we get session 9, i’ll be changing the list to reflect that. i KNOW scar is still yellow but he’s only got like a row of hearts left AND half the server wants to kill him AND he has no friends. frankly it’ll be a miracle if he makes it to 12th. i’m honestly banking on skizz getting killed in a fight with him.

11. Martyn

i hope martyn gets another kill in before he goes (though if he does that might give him a better shot than i think he has) but it’s really his complete lack of allies that’s going to screw him, i think. like, yes, half the server is red like him now, but how many of them are going to be his friend after he’s spent like four sessions harassing and trying to kill them? not many!

10. Joel

bdubs and joel are truly interchangeable on this list, i REALLY can’t decide which of them will go first. they’re both red, they’re both bloodthirsty, they’ve both got the same allies, and they’ve both got a TON of hearts left. ultimately i think joel will go first because he’s always going to be more reckless in his attempts for revenge but it’s really a toss up.

i hope bdubs kills etho before he dies i think it would be great. that’s not related but i think the joel blurb explains my thoughts.

8. Grian

grian wants to win So Bad and it is NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. he WILL die doing something stupid and i WILL get to mark off a square on my bingo card.

7. Bigb

i’ll be so honest i WANT bigb to be higher, and i think he and gem COULD swap spots. the real problem is how hesitant bigb usually is to kill people. he’s definitely gotten less hesitant as the seasons have gone on, but he is definitely not on gem’s level yet, and that’s what you need to play this game. i really hope i’m wrong about this placement though.

6. Gem

when gem went yellow so early i really thought she was screwing herself but session 7 proved to me that while she might not win this season, by god she’s going to take everyone down with her. and i think that’s beautiful.

5. Scott

this is the one i really really hope i’m wrong about. please i can’t keep seeing scott smajor in the top five. joel please destroy him.

4. Pearl

pearl doesn’t want to win again, we know this, but she is simply VERY GOOD AT THIS GAME! ultimately i think once the rest of the mounders (particularly bdubs) are gone she’s gonna go off the rails even more than she already has and i think that’s beautiful.

and just like last time, i’m doing a cop out answer for top three, which i think will be Impulse, Cleo, and Etho. i think Cleo or Etho is more likely of the three to win, particularly if this is our top three (just like liml, Impulse is stuck with two other people who everyone knows, including himself, will kill Impulse long before they kill each other) but i, as always, have a terrible blind hope for Impulse. please god.

jimmy really didn't understand that, why if they have more than 3 lives they won't give it to their yellow friends? he's not selfish! he was also thinking about grian! just one death and he had to leave. jimmy didn't want that for him! but... they wasn't going to give it to him. and when he decided to take it, martyn tricked him. of course he would, he knows that jimmy trust him. exiled, huh? he will surely do better alone! or maybe not alone...

scar still thinks about 3rd life. it was a good season and he had a friend next to him. but this season? he's alone. scar knows it and no matter how much he tried, there's no one next to him. it's all futile.

one day scar just was coming back home and... what is that? whos building this house here? scar just come in. empty, of course, but... he's so exited!! is it means that someone will live here? on the creaper killing fields?? it's really cool!

and who you think could live here? of course it was jimmy! the guy had nowhere to go! he wanted to feel safe and.... the boogieman curse is here too. but he just went to scar. he just wanted a life, but still he's here.

both was too happy to see each other!

"what happened in the south?

"well, we were passing around lives, creating bounds, creating friendships and i decided: hey! my time's to run now! and um... martyn caught up to me, i was very gullible, i traded it back and he left ib the wilderness, so- :("

"he left you in the wilderness?" "yeah.. and they- there no way back :c"

"im not the only one who's been left in the wilderness by some of those fools!" "mhm" "i was making friends with mumbo, we're gonna have some great times" "yeah" "and he left for five fish." "yea- wait. whoa.. whoa....." "yeah"

i really love to think that what would happen if jimmy and scar was allies on last life. they are both know that's feel of loneliness, when no one need you. i can see them hugging, making the strong bound, scar teaching jimmy how to sell stuff, they have the best time ever c:

So far three smps have had exile arcs and not once have i liked it LOL. I think i just really despise when a character is all alone,i dont fare well with it so i can totally support this

I don’t normally post original stuff here but part of me just really wants to put my ideas out in the world, so that they exist even if I never end up turning them into a full story.

Anyways, here’s a Life Series pirate au!!

- technically based in 3rd life, but follows other dynamics from later seasons

- scar and ren are rival pirate captains. ren is a seasoned pirate, he’s been doing it far longer and is far more feared. scar is new to the trade but very quickly made enemies and a reputation for being impossible to kill

- scar’s first mate is grian, of course. they’re best friends and it’s undecided whether or not scar begged grian to become a pirate with him, or grian lost a bet of some kind and being a pirate is his punishment

- also on scar’s crew: cleo and bdubs, his mom and brother; tango and impulse, mutual friends of cleo; scott and jimmy, allies of scar’s

- affiliates to scar’s crew include mumbo, who is an engineer friend of scar and grian’s who is terrified of the open sea. they keep trying to convince him to join their crew, with dubious success. also gem, who is either a bounty hunter/assassin/guard for hire who has her own beastly reputation and whom scar constantly tries to scam (unsuccessfully)

- ren’s ship is called the scarlet hound and his crew is generally referred to as the hounds (but meant like “hound’s” bc ren is a werewolf and they’re all “his”)

- martyn is his first mate, is one of if not the only member of ren’s crew who has been around since the beginning of ren’s pirate career. their crew has changed many times due to deaths in the field

- other members of ren’s crew include: skizz, etho, and bigb (of course); pearl, who was an outlaw in a similar vein to gem before she became allies with ren and martyn; Joel and lizzie (Joel was an enemy of ren’s but lizzie and ren got along and became allies, which forced Joel to put his opinions aside so he could follow lizzie)

- hybrids/fae exist! ren is a werewolf; lizzie is a pixie/fairy; scott, grian and Jimmy are avians; cleo is a zombie (she was revived from the dead by a necromancer); tango and impulse are both different species of dragon/netherborn

- there’s a little bit of empires crossover in that Rivendell is a real place with a lot of influence in this world; xornoth isn’t evil (yet) and is the current ruler. the cod empire either does not exist or is not affiliated with jimmy. other empires may exist but aren’t relevant to the story

- after xornoth rose to power, he and scott had a falling out and scott ran from Rivendell to pursue his own life, and either met jimmy afterwards or brought him along (this would make Jimmy a Rivendell citizen)

- Scott and Jimmy then met scar and grian, who invited them to join their pirate crew. they accepted for the thrill

- cleo and Etho are exes, in the same vein of limited life where scar and bdubs are their kids and Cleo took them in the divorce. no idea if they’re biological kids or not, don’t think it really matters. a large amount of the beef between the two crews is bc of this

- another point of contention is impulse, who was childhood friends with skizz. they went down different life paths for a while and met again after skizz had joined ren’s crew; impulse joined as well, only to betray them months later and steal valuable information from ren’s office on the way out

- impulse had joined scar’s crew during their time apart and they’d already planned on getting impulse into ren’s crew to steal, they just hadn’t planned on impulse being friends with one of ren’s crewmates

And that’s about all I have so far!! I have some vague plot ideas for a maaaaaybe 2 part fic someday, but who knows if it’ll ever exist for real. Feel free to comment any opinions or ideas for this au <3

hello trafficblr! today i want to talk about red lives between 3rd life and last life - specifically through the lens of friendships and alliances. last life session 6 spoilers ahead!

the difference between the two series is fairly clear - from the very start of last life, it was made clear that all ties with red lives were to be cut, all alliances with them were cancelled. but let's look at this in a bit more detail.

3rd life saw its red lives remain in their preexisting alliances. from scar throwing flowers at grian and asking if they can still be friends, to bdubs intentionally going red to become cleo's weapon. ren turning red and proving his own loyalty to martyn, to dogwarts. jimmy becoming scott's completely nonthreatening bodyguard. skizz remaining dogwarts' most loyal knight. the list goes on, we all know about our red/green duos. in 3rd life, friendship was something that the red lives believed they had to earn with their green friends. they had to prove that they wouldn't hurt them, that they'd be useful to them, and the two of them worked together as equals. none of these reds even contemplated betraying their friends. sticking with a green was the best chance that they had at survival - and honestly? none of them particularly wanted to jump straight into murder. for out-of-universe reasons, yes, but we can interpret this as the bloodlust wasn't quite as strong in 3rd life. they could resist killing their allies.

in last life, however? whilst friendships are intended to be entirely cancelled, what's really happened is that the entire concept of friendship has been weaponised. in comparison to 3rd life, very little war between factions has occurred: it's essentially become the reds versus everyone else. the greens and yellows are simply fighting to survive, and they'll tolerate anyone who helps them with that. it's simple.

not so much for the reds.

as it turns out, turning red doesn't simply eliminate all of a person's feelings towards their former allies. but especially in conjunction with their allies having to exile them, what it does do is twist those feelings of friendships. red lives no longer feel like they have to earn their friendships, they don't feel like winning anyone's trust not to kill them. and they are desperately, desperately lonely. and the bloodlust relishes in it. tells them how easy it would be - just a tap and they could have their friend back! it'd be great! being red doesn't mean you have to be alone, why can't they see that? they can still be friends!

multiple red lives on the server have threatened to kill somebody to make a new friend. and friendships between red lives are not as easily formed as one might expect.

firstly, joel:

"oops. shot an arrow. now i have a friend!" - in chat, after killing grian. "grian, do you wanna be friends?" - the first thing he says to grian when they meet again.

grian:

"we can still be friends, mumbo!" - i... don't need to elaborate on this one, do i? it speaks for itself. but also that whole creepy bit where he runs around spawn singing "friendship is here, where are you? :)"

cleo.

"you could be my friend! you could have a friend, if you wanted to be red! and red's so much fun! [...] you should join me!" - to jimmy. at first she's not going to kill him, she thinks it'd be kind of pathetic, but then she realises the potential. they can be friends! have fun together! of course, cleo doesn't miss her past allies. they betrayed her. but that doesn't mean she wants to be alone.

bdubs.

"you're gonna join me as a red life. [...] today you join me! yes! you will. we can do this right now, where you could jump off the wall tw- very simple! [...] die twice, be red, we're together! [...] if you don't do that, i will take the two lives!" - trying to convince etho to go red so that they can still be friends. "all you have to do is just stumble off a cliff, right off the side, and boom! we're back, baby! and it's way funner on this side, trust me." - trying to do the same to skizz.

mumbo.

"you wouldn't hurt me. i'm just a fellow southerner, i've got my spyglass..." - as he's tormenting the southerners after trying to kill them. "that's the second time! he's just got it out for me!" - grian, during that same conversation. mumbo spends practically the entire episode - especially the part when he's alone as a red life - trying to kill the southlanders, especially grian, who's dangerously close to going red again.

jimmy and lizzie both find one another relatively quickly, and team up for the rest of the session. neither of them have much of an opportunity to be lonely - however, both of them do express how much they miss their former alliances (with jimmy even begging martyn for a life). interestingly, with these two, their desperation for friendship is used against them: grian's psychological warfare against the reds plays into it. he tells both factions of reds that the other doesn't want to ally with them and is planning to kill them. for reds who have no one (and have nothing too in jimmy's case), this is unbearable.

the only exception is scar. who never had any friends to win back in the first place. who very possibly went red deliberately (the first time at least. but threatened to go red beforehand both times) and immediately turns fully malicious against practically the whole server. he is also the only one to immediately go after an enemy with nothing but killing intent in mind - even grian had the ulterior motive of getting a life from scar.

and even scar joins in with mumbo chanting "friend! friend!" when they meet again as reds. he's lonely. he wants friends. but unlike the others he just doesn't have anyone in mind to lament losing.

Martyn LLSMP Lore Explanation VOD Notes

Woke up seeing that @inthelittlewood had a request for any tumblr lists about what he’d committed to canon for his Last Life story. I didn’t have one posted, but I had a bunch of notes I took on his lore explaining vod a few months ago. In the interest of full disclosure, I made these notes for a fanfic, so I’ve done my best to edit out all of my additional notes of interpretation to just leave the canon things, lol. A lot of this is just summarized exactly how Martyn said it. Believe it or not, I actually edited this down by at least 600 words. Notes under the cut since it's long!

Martyn planned to sprinkle alliances throughout all the factions in last life, so that the shadow was throughout and he could have an elite group from all areas of the server. He only intended to ally with Ren and Lizzie (not Cleo and BigB) and would’ve eventually tried to get an in with Team BEST too. Voice carried over from S1-S2

The Watchers are the shadow, and associated with the moon. The Shadow Alliance were just tools for the shadows to use. Something about wanting to engulf the server in shadow and extinguish the light. They can only appear in the world as pumpkins.

The voice wanted Martyn to kill Grian as the Boogeyman and then he would be the last Southerner remaining on yellow. It was the only task the Watchers gave him, and he failed.

Getting Grian out of the Southlands wasn’t enough, the Shadow wanted him out of the series. There is a resentment for Grian from the Shadow, he is not in good standing with them.

Watchers are pissed off at Scott because he refuses to play ball and give in to the boogeyman curse. He’s the only one all series who refused to participate. Scott and Martyn running opposite narratives: Scott full light, Martyn going full dark.

Martyn wakes up after dying out of breath, lightheaded, and in total darkness. The Watchers are angry that he failed to kill Scott. And Scott won? Oooh, they’re mad. Martyn doesn’t recognize the voice at the end, since it manifests differently for everyone. It manifests to whatever that person finds most welcoming. So Martyn had been hearing it as a comforting voice? When they appeared to Martyn as pumpkins, he heard Jimmy and Mumbo’s voices because at that moment he wanted and needed them, but the Watchers were actually mocking him.

The Shadow is pissed that he didn’t succeed in either season. Calls him feeble. He failed the Shadow so they won’t accept him, so now he needs to make his way into the light.

They told him that his friends would survive the end. They said that Jimmy, Mumbo, him, and Impulse would survive to the end. Grian apparently not included.

Canonically something happened between episode one and two where Martyn had a conversation with the Shadow/was spoken to by them and was told that he and his allies would see the end, though we don’t see this.

From Martyn’s perspective, he assumed that they would join the Shadow, go to the end, and live eternally. He was told there would be a place for them. They reallyb meant the end of days. One last stand. Death game. Running out of food. His friends were never going to "see the end" in the way he'd assumed.

The whole thing is a torment on Martyn, and that is the moment that Martyn realizes he’s been toyed with and the Shadow was never on his side.

Initially the Shadows thought they wanted to consume the souls or energy of the players when they were in war torn times, but it wasn’t enough. They fed on the energy and souls of players as each one fell from their last life. The taste of betrayal is sweeter. That’s why they implemented the Boogeyman curse in Last Life, so that it would invoke sheer confusion and panic.

Scott’s will to live was too strong and his flame too bright. He was the only one to refuse the Boogeyman. Everyone felt like you had to comply with the Boogeyman curse, but you didn’t have too. Scott is a testament to it. Everyone could have lived harmoniously on red together if they let themselves lose their lives. They could have, but they felt they had to kill.

At the end of Evo, they went to fight the dragon. Martyn describes it as they were all teleported to different realities or instances to fight. Grian was taken, converted into a Watcher, and was gone. He said there was a tonal shift and they all learned the Watchers weren’t quite what they had thought they were. Then the Listeners came into play, who tried to get them away from the Watchers and start fresh. He says there was a bit of time travel, and that they went to new spawn in order to be free of the Watchers

When the Listeners ripped them from the Watchers’ hands, then some people were able to go on to their home realities and were safe and well, but some were caught in the watchers’ world still. They were pulled into a cycle and repeating pattern of the multiplayer world (more sinister). They were being experimented on and presented challenges to see what happened. It’s a cycle and the Watchers were feeding on their negative energy and souls from each time they perished.

So since Evo has happened, Grian is a Watcher. Grian doesn’t like this. The Watchers weren’t what they thought they were before. Grian decides he doesn’t want to be watching it unfold, because he would rather be playing the game. He’s not trying to break it from the inside, but Martyn suggests he was trying to free his allies one by one to end their misery quicker. He also said a more sadistic bit of Grian wanted to participate in the games they were running, but that a bit of him also wanted to free people and maybe free himself from being a Watcher/the cycle and go back to normal. The Watchers were annoyed with Grian. He wasn’t meant to be there, which is why they wanted him out of the Southlands.

The line about Martyn being “more of a Listener” is saying he’s one of the ones who chose to flee with the Listeners and he’s now being punished for it. **Martyn confirms on tumblr that neither him or any of the characters are meant to actually be Listeners, just associated with them.

They have some memories of what happened previously, but not the emotions behind it. They remember Third Life, but don’t have the emotions of it so they feel no resentment for it. Maybe the Watchers took away those negative emotions when they fed on their souls.

They’re caught in a loop infinitely. Is there a way to break out? Who knows. Martyn is still falling through the void in between each state of being. Last time he was unconscious and unknowing, but this time he had direct communication with the Watchers.

Martyn was only ever trying to ensure that his closest circle could see the end. He never intended to truly betray the Southlands. He was doing bad in the hope of doing good. The Watchers communed with him, manipulated him, mocked him, berated him, put on the voices of his dead friends, and promised him the world without actually giving him anything.

Things Martyn suggests but does not fully say whether they are/aren’t canon: Other SMPs (Hermitcraft, Empires) might be dreams the players are having between loops, and not actually canon. People who die may temporarily become a Watcher themselves to spectate the game. He does not clarify if Grian or anyone else manages to break the cycle. The moon may be the source of energy to commune with the Watchers, and it was a full moon in 3L session 8 and Last Life session 4.

The Watchers stand entirely in the dark and the Listeners stand entirely in the light. There is a lot of light/dark imagery between them, such as Watchers using a darker block palette in their builds.

The Shadow liked Ren because he was so willing. He would just go ahead, no questions asked. The Watchers also realized that trying to get Martyn to betray Ren in Third Life was the wrong call, and that they were stronger together than apart. Martyn retained his memories from last season, but not their emotional bonds. It’s like a vague memory.

Jimmy died first each time and worked for the Listeners. It’s kind of like the Watchers having their will.

Pearl, Mumbo, Lizzie--just got pulled into it. Did they do something in another reality, or space and time that upset the Watchers to get them pulled in? Did they even do anything wrong? Did the Watchers pluck them up and bring them in because of their association with the others, who had upset the Watchers?

Martyn kept going back to the Southlands because it was home, and because of guilt from what he was doing. Even though he was doing bad things, it was with the intention to save everyone. Even though it’s all broken and shattered, it’s all he’s ever known.

The Watchers are not omnipresent in all mc worlds. They can watch a concentrated area, but not everything everywhere. So they can watch every participant in Last Life at once, but not other servers at the same time. They aren’t that powerful, and Martyn wanted to leave it so that they could maybe be defeated at some point. They cannot server-hop.

and that's all I have!! this is just notes from the lore explaining vod/finale, though, and does not encompass anything specifically from Third Life or earlier episodes of Last Life other than what Martyn already spoke about in his VOD.

also the fact that mumbo is jsut going on a killing spree and like- his intentions are so cruel and evil but like- you talk to him and hes like "oh! pardon me!" or "ah sorry im not very good at pvp haha" and also forgets that he has red life power and then is super awkward about intimidating people. i just think its so charming and cute i love it sm

and scar... doesnt know how water elevators work... bless him. i mean to be fair he did kinda want to be red anyway so like- i dont think its any difference to him- his business is BOOMING. there was like a whole section if his video that was just deals my goodness

also the B.E.S.T.'s like banana split thing where they make a tnt canon in like record time is INSANE like that is racecar track pit stop type beat- thats amazing. like someone could look outside their base and see them- look away- look back and be greeted with tnt in their face

and jimmy and lizzie dying to the same trap by the other person is hilarious i love it

all in all an amazing session and the fact that there were SIX BOOGIES is insane i love that

And for the last few i havent seen what cleos up to, i feel bad for lizzie but i was so excited when jimmys trap worked, i did not think it would work because i didnt think anyone would come to his exile shack, and i mean, they wouldnt have if he hadnt died, but i guess its a win?

DDADDS SPOILERS

I found the cult ending thing in the game files but it was all jubled and in the wrong order so i did my best to transcribe it (also i accidentally deleted half of this post the first time I wrote this and i am d y i n g)

Yaaaaaaaaaaaawn. What time is it? Must have been asleep for ages. I wonder what will happen now that Mary is gone? What about Josephs kids? And how will Amanda feel about all this? ...Well, we all have each other. That's what matters. I guess time will tell, right? Better get up and greet the day. Wait. I...am I tied up?! What the hell?! How did I get here? What's going on?! Joseph? Anybody? Don't panic. You're probably just dreaming. Why would there be a... ...a dungeon. An evil dungeon. Why would there be an evil dungeon here? This can't be real. Maybe I had too much Twilight Rouge. I'm...dreaming, or something.

‘’Oh I can guarantee this is real’’

I can see someone at the end of the hall. It's just a shape, I can barely make out any features. ‘’Who's there? Can you untie me?’’

(first name), there are powers at work so far beyond your understanding that the very idea that I would sink to some half-baked sex game is a little insulting. ‘’Just kidding! You don't get to choose. I know you're used to being in control here. But now it's my turn. and don't worry yourself about Amanda.’’ ‘’If you touch her-’’ ‘’Please, (first name), give me some credit. Look at my pedigree. If I do my job, I won't even have to. Now you'll excuse me, there's some other buisness I need to attend to. Your dear friend Robert has been awfully worried about you. I think it's about time that miserable drunk gets one last visit from the Dover Ghost.’’ This is a nightmare. ‘’A beautiful nightmare, wouldn't you agree? All along you've been living a dream, Daddy. Now it's time to wake up.’’ Oh man. This is bad. This is very bad. How long was I out? When is he coming back? How do I get out of here? A hand slips over my mouth. ‘’Don't say anything. Hell, don't even think anything. It's okay, (first name). It's me. Mary I'm gonna get you out of here.’’ She kneels down and starts working on the ropes around my ankles. ‘’I gotta be honest, I didn't like you at first.’’ ‘’I guess I did try to break up your marr-’’ ‘’Shh! Shut up for once. Look, truth is I feel sorry for you. I feel sorry for the both of us. I don't think you're a bad person, despite what you might think of me. I don't want it to end like this. Not again.’’ I raise my eyebrows at her. ‘’Come on. Who do you think lived in that house before you?’’ I- ‘’Don't think about it. Not right now. He's coming. Run kid.’’ Mary finishes untying me and disappears. I have to get out of here. I get out of the chair and run as fast as I can down the hallway outside of my holding cell. Eventually I run out of breath. I can't keep sprinting. Not with these Dad knees. I check myself. All I have are the clothes on my back and-this thing in my pocket. The pocket knife that Robert gave me. If I have to defend myself, this is all I have. Looking ahead of me, I can't see the end of the hallway. It bends further up there. I look back and can't even see where I started. I guess the only thing I can do is keep going and hope there's a way out on the other end. If there is an other end. The hallway bends and twists. Sometimes it gets smaller, to the point where I have to crawl on my hands and knees to get through. sometimes it expands into a great cavern where I can't even see the ceiling. I see no way out other that to keep moving forward. I don't know how long I've been walking, but my body aches with soreness. I'm long past dehydration. My head is pounding. My vision is blurred. I lean up against the walls of the hallway for support. I'm not sure how I'm still going. And yet still here I am. I've been walking for what I think must be days. It could be weeks-months. The exhaustion has sunk into my bones. I drift in and out of consciousness. I think I've slept, if you can call it sleep. My dreams are plagues with nightmares of being chased down this hallway. I see Josephs kids. They hide in the shadows. They're coming to drag me back to Joseph. Oh god, Joseph. I can see his face so clearly in those dreams. I don't know why I keep moving, why I keep placing foot in front of the other. My clothes are tattered and my shoes have worn through. My hell is inescapable. Until... It's-a door. A door at the end of the hallway. I place my hand on the know, seeing for the first time my gnarled fingernails and stretched, papery skin. I open the door and walk through. ...I'm in my house?! How did that-? Amanda rushes into the room, wrapping her arms around me in a ferocious bear hug. ‘’Where have you been!? Are you okay? I tried calling you like thirty times!’’ ‘’A...Amanda?’’ ‘’What happened? Did the boat break down or something?’’ ‘’Oh-I-um-’’ ‘’You know what? I'm just glad you're home.’’ I look down at myself and my clothes. They're-there. My shoes are on. My fingernails aren't gnarled. I feel fine. I hug Amanda again. Nothing has ever felt as good in my entire life. I have to choke back tears of relief. ‘’Amanda-I'm-so glad to see you. You have no idea.’’ ‘’Wow, one night at sea.’’ ‘’You didn't see a whale, did you? You poor thing.’’ No whale could keep me from my daughter. ‘’You're damn right. ‘’You know what? You need breakfast. A very greasy breakfast.’’ ‘’That sounds amazing.’’ Amanda skips out of the room. This is all so confusing-was it a dream? ‘’By the way, is it okay if Emma P. comes over tonight?’’ ‘’Emma P.?’’ ‘’You know, my best friend?’’ ‘’Oh, sure. Wait-I thought-isn't Emma R. your best friend? She has red hair? You do art together? You pooped in her bed doring that sleepover one time?’’ ‘’Oh right, my mistake. Teenager brain, you know?’’ I sit down on the couch, suddenly very exhausted. All I want is to have a big plate of hashbrowns with my daughter by my side while I quietly work on my word jumbles. I reach over to the coffee table and grab my trusty book of jumbles. This is-this is a crossword puzzle. I stare at it for too long. ‘’Hey Amanda?’’ Amanda pops her head in from the kitchen. ‘’Working hard on these eggs, Dadtron. If you want the perfect over-medium I gotta be in the zone.’’ ‘’When's your birthday?’’ ‘’Why, did you get me something?’’ ‘’No, seriously. When's your birthday.’’ ‘’My birthday? Dad, really? Do I have to answer this?’’ ‘’I have seen a lot of weird stuff today, Amanda. Humor me.’’ ‘’My birthday is- It's- Nothing get's past you, huh? You know, I almost had you going there for a sec. Was it the crossword puzzle that gave it away? You know, I try so hard to nail the details. Like, cooking you breakfast? Over-medium eggs with hash browns? Come on. That's so you.’’ ‘’....’’ ‘’And my Amanda impression? I really think I stuck the landing on her irreverent yet wholesome tone. The whole ''manic pixie dream daughter'' thing? I should've been on Broadway with these chops. I feel like you're not appreciating how much work I've put in here.’’ Amanda turns ash black, her clothes, har and bracelets collapsing into concentric rings of pitch-dark smoke. Cracks begin to form along the walls around me. I look down and see the floor collapsing in tiles. As the walls crumble, I see where I truly am. ‘’Almost got away, huh?’’ ‘’Dunno how you got out of those ropes. You're a crafty one, aren't you?’’ ‘’Mary.’’ ‘’Oh right! Mary! She's rocking the tag team with you, isn't she? Funny, here I was thinking marriage was about trust. You know I thought I was gonna take care of Robert, and then here you were trying to make your escape and honestly (first name) you're just killing my whole timeline here.’’ Wait-Robert. As quickly as I can, I pull his folding knife out of my pocket, and lunge for Joseph, throwing all my force into him. Joseph knocks the knife out of my hand. It skitters across the room. Aw, man. ‘’(first name), I thought we were cool. I thought we had a thing here. What happened to Margarita Zone? Welp, sorry bud, but I guess I'm gonna have to do ya dirty. Doing dirty means I have to kill you.’’ Joseph wraps his hands around my neck, smiling as he tightens his grip. ‘’What's wrong? You were to into this last night.’’ I have no strength left to fight him. This is it. Isn't it? The world goes quiet around me. All I can think about is Amanda. I miss her so much. I'm sorry Amanda. I love you more than anything. Please be good.

Josephs eyes go wide. He releases his grip on me and I gasp in air. He turns around. It's over, Joseph. ‘’Honey, sweetie, you-you stabbed me.’’ ‘’You stole so much of my life from me.’’ Joseph backs away from Mary, clutching the wound on his shoulder. ‘’Sweetheart-we can work this out.’’ ‘’I'm done with you.’’ ‘’Father?’’ Chris peeks into the doorway behind Mary. He looks different. Behind him are Christian, Christie, and Crish, who all creep into the room. ‘’Father-we're so hungry. Won't you feed us father?’’ Mary turns to me and holds out a hand. ‘’Hey, sailor. It's time to go.’’ The children corner Joseph as I crawl to Mary, who pulls me into the hallway. I look back into the room at the horror I had escaped. I-it's- The more I look at it, the more it seems to break my mind. I turn away, my head pounding. ‘’This body is but a conduit, Mary! I'll see you in your nightmares!’’ What the hell? My eyes open and I shoot up in bed, gasping for air. ‘’Dad!’’ Amanda leaps off of the chair in my room and attacks me with a hug. ‘’Amanda!’’ This is the best hug of my life. ‘’I was so worried about you!’’ ‘’I'm so happy to see her again!’’ Wait. ‘’Amanda-whens your birthday?’’ ‘’Dad, did you forget again? It's March 22nd. You got me a record player and we ate ice cream cale at the beach? But then I dropped the ice cream cake and got sand all over it?Remember?’’

I-I remember that. ‘’Panda I missed you so much. What-what happened?’’ ‘’You don't remember? The yacht sank. The rescue crews had to pull you out of the water. That was a few days ago.’’ ‘’Where's Joseph?’’ ‘’They found something in the Yacht wreckage. Some documents that showed he was embezzling funds from the church. Nobody's seen him since. There's a detective here who's been waiting to talk to you. He's nice but he's drinking all of our coffee. Lemme go grab him.’’ ‘’Wait-’’ ‘’Yeah?’’ ‘’Amanda, I love you so much.’’ ‘’I love you too, Dad.’’ Amanda skips out of the room, and in a moment Mary enters with- ...the guy I saw in the hallway. ‘’Rise and shine, bucko.’’ ‘’Mary-are you okay?’’ ‘’You know it was a real shame what happened to Joseph. I had no idea he was doing what he was doing to the church. And I can't believe he ran once the feds showed up, leaving me to take care of our four beautiful children on my own. But don't worry, they're staying with my parents out in the midwest til this all blows over.’’ Mary stares at me, waiting for me to say something. ‘’Good answer.’’ ‘’Glad to see you've both got your story straight.’’ ‘’I'm happy you're okay. I was worried about you.’’ ‘’Thanks, Mary.’’ Mary cracks a smile before turning and leaving my room. ‘’Take it sleazy, fellas.’’ ‘’Once the door closes, the man pulls up a chair and sits next to my bed. You don't know me, but I know a lot about you, (first name). Been keeping tabs on you for a while.’’ ‘’Who are you?’’ ‘’Graves. Detective Saul Graves. There's strange and mysterious forces at work here in Maple Bay. What you saw down there-what we both saw down there-I don't know if I'll ever be able to forget it. And I get the feeling that you wont be able to, either. But it's my job to get to the bottom of this.’’ ‘’So what does that mean for me?’’ ‘’It means to live your life like none of this ever happened. Go be happy. Go raise your daughter. Go fall in love. Be well, (first name).’’ Saul walks to the door of my bedroom, but stops. He turns to me. ‘’And- I know it's hard to raise a kid as a single parent. Even I lost my wife under mysterious circumstances. Little Barry and I have been on our own for a while now, and if there's one thing I've learned through all of this, it's that us Dads have to help each other out. Get some rest. But if you're not doing anything later-maybe you give me a call.’’
