HEY. HEY.
HEY @re-dracula WHAT GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO HAVE JONATHAN ACTUALLY READING THAT PASSAGE OUT LOUD BEHIND SEWARD DESCRIBING THE SCENE, HUH? WITH THE TEARS IN HIS VOICE AND THE PAUSING AND THE SHORT LITTLE INHALES AND THE VOICE CRACKS? WAS IT TRULY NECESSARY??? I WAS ALREADY CRYING. I DIDN'T NEED THIS TOO. WHAT THE FUCK.

Question for youuuuu
Hi! I have never actually listened to the mechanisms, but I’m a big tma fan and really like the very slight aus where it’s like the mechanisms were the archivists college band things, so I’ve read a lot of fanfic that basically references them with not a lot of context yk?
Also. Because I have watched some rusty quill stream vods on YouTube, I’m now getting like 9 second mechanisms clips recommended to me.
And. Last little thing. I am a big alt folk person, and last night I remembered this band I love that I basically totally forgot about and hadn’t been listening to for a bit, and went and just shuffled their songs and it was great. (Robert hallow and the holy men! If you were curious)
But. I was like scrolling through the similar artists, and the mechanisms showed up again.
So now partly because I just keep seeing them come up and partly because of curiosity. I’m tempted to actually check them out.
But I’m really bad with new music, just kind of in general I like my comfortable and familiar songs. And I know really nothing about them besides like. Some of their names and the whole like immortal space pirate thing. But like musically? I have like no info.
So basically uh.
What should I expect? What like. Kind of music would I be getting into? Is it worth it?
I’m asking mostly because I’m looking for someone to be enthusiastic so I have a reason to push my hesitancy against new things aside btw.
Sorry this is so long lmao, and thank you :)
OH MY GOD????? IM FUCKING HONORED THANK YOU
Okay so to start out with, they have 4 main albums. Once Upon A Time In Space, The Bifrost Incident, High Noon Over Camelot, and Ulysses Dies At Dawn. They tend to vary in terms of what their music sounds like, but they always have the same instruments, more or less. (Glockenspiel, flute, drums, sometimes Jonny on the harmonica, bass, guitar that I honestly cannot tell if it's electric or acoustic, viola, violin, Jessica Law's amazing vocals, and I think that's it but I'm probably forgetting something else). High Noon Over Camelot has a lot of Western influence, and is very folk-leaning-country, is the best way I can describe it?
You said you listen to TMA, so here's a couple people to know - Frank Voss and Jessica Law. Frank Voss plays Ashes O'Reilly, an arsonist who burned down their home planet and joined up with the Mechs. Here's the song with their backstory. It's very much like jazz, I think. In TMA, Frank Voss plays Basira Hussain. Jessica Law plays the Toy Soldier, a sentient wooden man (or, according to a tweet she made, a metal man that just looks wooden?) It essentially pretends to be alive, and will obey any order given to it. It pretended to be a rich lady's husband for a while, and then fell in love with an Angel - when it wasn't reciprocated, it ripped out the Angel's voice box. Not sure if it uses it as its own voice box, I forgot. No backstory song for TS sadly :(((. In TMA, Jessica Law plays Nikola Orsinov! And then there's Jonny Dville, first mate, killed his dad for money, killed the guy who paid him to kill his dad, burnt down the guy's casino, and joined up with the Mechs. Here's the song with his backstory. Not quite sure what genre that song falls under, sorry! Jonny D'ville is played by Jonny Sims, who is Jonathan Sims. Don't worry, it's really easy to remember /j.
Anyways, I'm gonna assume you're not very familiar with their whole shtick from what you said - basically, each of their albums tells a story, except for Tales To Be Told Vol 1 and 2. In those, all of the individual songs tell individual stories. There is Death To The Mechanisms, but I'd listen to that last. You can listen to the other albums in any order, though! There are some songs that are entirely narration, no singing. If that's not your thing, TheVoidSings on YouTube, who is an absolute SAINT, has a playlist of all the tracks that do NOT have that narration.
Now, the music type. WARNING FOR GUNSHOT NOISES IN ALMOST ALL THE ALBUMS. Not sure if that bothers you, but they do often have gunshot sound effects. If you like, I can compile a list of songs that have the gunshot effect so you can avoid it, if it would make it a no go for you. High Noon Over Camelot - Western. Heavy folk & country. Once Upon A Time In Space....not sure what to class it as. It's a mixture of things. It can be very loud and fast-paced, but sometimes slow? There's some songs that are like a waltz. Some are very fast and loud. The Bifrost Incident - the best thing I can class it as is "train". Very loud, fast-paced, but melodic in a way. Ulysses Dies At Dawn is heavy blues influence, kinda jazz? idk I don't really listen to jazz sorry :(. And while I am biased, it is ABSOLUTELY worth getting into. Like I said, if a whole album at once seems too intimidating, Tales To Be Told vols 1 and 2 have individual songs that each tell a story. Their music as a whole is always pretty loud and fast paced, so don't go into it expecting waltz, classical, slow and soft stuff.
I'm sorry this took me so long to answer 😭😭😭 I hope this is OK please let me know if you have any more questions!!!!!!

magnus fic roundup
as tma comes to a close, i thought i'd post some of my favorite fics to come out of this fandom. most of these are classics, listed in no particular order.
A Weather In The Flesh by @cuttoothed | 3K | S1-S4 | Jon/Martin | Complete
"There is a span of years where Jon doesn’t touch anyone other than the occasional hand shake. It’s not so bad. He’s never been someone who’s needed physical affection."
Jon has never been any good at making people want to stick around.
↳ this is such a well-done exploration of jon’s character and his relationship with touch, and i’ve re-read it at least five times. sweet and sad and phenomenally well-written.
in the chillest land and on the strangest sea by imperfectcircle, singlecrow | 20K | Safehouse, S1-S4 | Jon & Daisy, Jon/Martin | Complete
Jon remembers a statement he read years ago given by a Jesuit priest, who said that the shortest prayer he knew was, just, fuck it, as in fuck it; it's in God's hands. He takes Daisy's hand and trails on after her.
or; hope is a thing with feathers.
↳ hey, you wanna fuckin..... feel things? read this.
The Magnus Institute vs the 21st Century: a series of emails and IMs by shinyopals | 26K | Series | S3 | Pre-Jon/Martin | Complete
The Magnus Institute hires a Data Protection Officer. He sets about diligently booking in meetings, writing policy documents, and training all the staff in the importance of confidentiality. Now if only he could get hold of the Head Archivist, who seems to have vanished again...
(Jon is only trying to save the world, but apparently some people think he should still be doing his day job.)
↳ i’d be surprised to find people who haven’t read this series, but it’s the definition of “the magnus archives is a workplace comedy”. also, alasdair stuart has actually read some clips of this on Twitch, so that’s a fun bonus.
Bell, Book, and Candle by yellow_caballero | 102K | Series | S3 into S4 | Jon/Martin | Complete
In accordance with the Ride or Die Pact of 2009, Jonathan Sims can call upon Georgie Barker at any time for aid with no strings attached. Despite their rocky history, their childhood friendship, and Jon’s barely recovered alcoholism, this pact is sacred and must be upheld.
Georgie Barker may regret this. She may regret it when she discovers that the world is full of monsters and eldritch gods and dickhead managers. She may regret it when a punk rocker who should be dead collapses on their doorstep, a teenager again who needs their help. She may regret it when her stupid ex-boyfriend starts selling his soul for knowledge and the ability to keep his new family safe.
But she probably won’t. Georgie isn’t scared of anything - not a Clown’s apocalypse, not the apocalypse that Jon is destined to begin, and not Jon’s own loss of humanity.
Maybe she should be.
↳ if you’re looking for an everyone-lives-no-one-dies-happy-ending fic that also happens to be massively chaotic, look no further.
The Reverb in These Holy Halls by @wolftraps | 98K | AU, S1-S4 | Jon/Martin | Complete
Undoing the apocalypse would have been enough for Jon, if all his people survived. Without them, Jon's only recourse is making it so it never happened in the first place. He's going to do better this time.
↳ quintessential time travel AUs. plot-wise, i feel like these can be difficult to write, but op does a fantastic job of tying things together in a way that makes sense. plus, it’s just fun to read.
jon sims v the nhs by @thoughtsbubble | 12K | Series | S3 | Complete
Joan Bright has a new patient. He's carrying an old tape recorder and is covered head to toe in scars. Jonathan Sims looks dangerous, but Dr Bright has dealt with all sorts of atypical individuals. She has no reason to be nervous.
Right?
↳ if you’ve ever thought “hey, jon should probably go to therapy”, then 1) you’re absolutely right and 2) this is... probably what would’ve happened. prior knowledge of The Bright Sessions is not required. also, apparently, this fic is written by the showrunner of The Underwood Collection? wild.
Family, Found by Dribbledscribbles | 9K | S4 | Complete
It’s Basira who catches onto it.
The collective shift that seems to come over them when heading in or out of the Institute. Not just the oppressive sensation of being observed, their every move catalogued for the voyeuristic cravings of some unseen Eye(s). That feeling remained with them even when they left the Institute these days, but it was always stronger inside its walls. That wasn’t the change. Nor was it the point.
The point was: making life worse for Jonathan Sims.
↳ i think being part of the avengers fandom circa 2012 has given me permanent found-family-trope brainrot, but you know what. jonathan sims can have a little happiness, as a treat.
Road to Damascus by @titanfalling | 107K | Series | S4 | Jon & Tim | Complete
n. an important moment of insight, typically one that leads to a dramatic transformation of attitude or belief
Or, in which Tim becomes an avatar for the end of all things.
↳ tim dies and then he doesn’t. there is catharsis and world building. just....read it.
Come, Change Your Ring With Me by @backofthebookshelf | 29K | S3 | Peter/Jon, Jon/Martin, Peter/Elias | Complete
The Lukases demand the Archivist marry into the family, and the Institute relies on them too much to say no. Peter is smug. Elias is fuming. Martin is suffering. Jon thinks this might be tolerable if only Peter would hurry up and leave him alone already.
OR, the soap opera we call an Archives revolves around Peter Lukas this time.
↳ superb evil-bastards-in-love content, feat. martin pining, tim being obnoxious, and jon being... well, tired, mostly. i will literally never get tired of how op writes peter.
creatures that i briefly move along by @dotsayers | 16K | Series | AU, Post-S4 | background Jon/Martin
Mr Sims was so weird, was the thing. Miss Grant always said calling people weird was rude, and Anna sort of agreed, but she didn’t know what other word to use to describe Mr Sims.
He’d only been in with the class for a few days, really, and half of that he just sat at the back listening, but that didn’t stop her from making a swift judgement. 5BG had had student teachers before, back when they were 3ST, and they’d been uniformly normal.
Mr Sims was… actually, Anna had a better adjective. He was interesting.
↳ i just.... love teacher!jon fics. this series delivers.
Once Bitten by @apatheticbutterflies | 1K | S4 | Jon & Daisy | Complete
Jon Sims has always been a jumpy kind of guy. Nervous. Twitchy. Daisy used to think it meant he was guilty. Turns out he was. Just not of what she’d thought.
Daisy learns how to peel an orange.
↳ daisy and jon’s relationship is an example of an instance where i’m happy to say “fuck what you wrote mr. jonny ‘chocolate torte of tragedy’ sims, i want them to be friends”.
pins and needles by mutterandmumble | 13K | S1-S4 | Complete
He’s got a reputation to uphold anyways; an uptight, rigid reputation that dictates the way that he interacts and functions and is such an integral part of him that he can’t let go of it anytime soon. He likes his safety nets. He likes his contingencies. He likes his privacy, and everything around this place right down to the walls seems to have ears, so he’ll stay tight-lipped up to and beyond the threat of death.
He’s good at that.
In which Jon takes up embroidery and bumbles through life the best that he can.
↳ out of all the introspective jon pieces i’ve read (and there are many), this one stands out. maybe it’s the symbolism or the characterisation, or maybe it’s the fact that i have an embroidery kit lurking in the back of my closet along with a hundred other half-pursued hyperfixations. whatever. this is excellent.
sleeping in by @ivelostmyspectacles | 5K | S2 | Jon/Tim | Complete
“Who are you trying to convince?”
Jon gives up, letting his head sag against Tim’s shoulder. “I don’t know.”
aka Elias gets tired of Jon and Tim's bickering, sends them away for a "team-building" weekend trip, and is sure to book them a room with only one bed
↳ this has everything you’d need from a “oh no there’s only one bed” fic. someone please get these men therapy.
if you try, sometimes (you get what you knead) by @ajcrawly | 3.5K | S1-S4 | Jon/Martin, Tim/Sasha | Complete
It starts with an abundance of boeuf bourguignon and ends up as a team tradition.
Food and love in uncertain times.
↳ more found family fic, this time with a diverse og!archival staff and food as a metaphor for love. hurt in all the right ways. made me hungry in the process.

The Magnus Archives ‘Children of the Night’ (S02E16) Analysis
A continuation of Trevor the Vampire Hunter’s statement!  Revelations about another potential monster!  And a confrontation a long time coming that was AMAZING AND PERFECT AND EVERYTHING I EVER WANTED.  This is going to be a short and rather informal analysis, but … yay.  There is just so much yay in this one.
So apparently somehow Trevor didn’t die in the Archives as the first statement (and Martin) claimed, although since those pages are missing, we don’t know what actually happened. I get the feeling that perhaps whatever happened to Trevor in the archives is more complicated than Sims knows, and directly involves Gertrude.  Could they have worked together and faked Trevor’s death?  Could Trevor have died, but somehow was brought back? So many questions!
While that remains a mystery, we did get details about his accidental murder of Alard DuPont (human drug dealer), and how by that point Trevor was addicted to both heroin and the hunt.  It’s interesting to get the perspective of someone who is a completely ordinary human, unconnected to the families and politics of the supernatural, but one who has become embroiled in it willingly, to the point he seeks it out to fight it. We’ve had so many paranormal researchers in this show, that to have a paranormal hunter, particularly one who seems successful, is interesting.
Even more interesting is Trevor’s confrontation with something that wasn’t at all a vampire. Although never specified, I’m fairly certain the spider woman was another Flesh Hive, though perhaps of a different ilk than Jane.  Could this have led Trevor to his hunt at the Ivy Meadows Nursing Home in ‘Taken Ill’? After his initial confrontation with the Hive, did he actively pursue its other avatars, including John Amhurst?
And equally importantly, if Trevor didn’t die in the archive, is he still around?  Can we hope one day for a Trevor Ex Machina to rescue our heroes from certain doom?  And what about the young woman he was at Ivy Meadows with?  Is this evidence of a larger, and potentially more connected network of hunters?  It makes sense that Trevor wouldn’t be the only one, that there would be some people who, when confronted with the paranormal, would take up arms against it.  Who would seek it out and try to protect people from it. Could we, through Trevor and possibly this young woman, get a glimpse into that new aspect of the supernatural ecosystem?
So, yes, Trevor’s story has several fun and interesting tidbits to unpack, but the one that ended up being the most important was that simple lie Martin told: that Trevor Herbert died in the archive.  Because that one lie—a lie, as it turns out, of omission, as he heard some people talking about Trevor, thought they said he died, and probably told Sims that he had died in some effort to be useful—finally ended up bringing about that confrontation we’ve all been waiting for.
Martin Blackwood
We’ve known since early in the season that Martin is lying about something.  We know that he’s overly helpful, pushy, and surprisingly capable.  We know he’s really good at being prepared for difficult circumstances, and adjusted to living in the archives with aplomb.  We know he cares a silly amount about what Sims thinks of him, and fusses over Sims all the time.
And the great thing is that all those traits make perfect sense now that we’ve got his backstory. Because Martin’s lie?  Well …
I GOT IT FUCKING RIGHT!!!!!!!  Ahem. Sorry.  I may have punched the air when Martin admitted to never having gotten a degree.  Because, holy shit, I made that post and that speculation weeks ago, purely based on trying to square Martin’s behavior with the fact that he seems fairly young, and the fact that his timeline seemed funky, and my friend’s extremely strong reaction to the idea that anyone could be working in an academic institution without at least a college degree.  It just seemed like a cool idea that Martin hadn’t been to college, and was lying in the face of academic snobbery (and okay, yes, he apparently falsified his qualifications, which is a far more serious lie).
So here’s what we now know about Martin Blackwood: he’s 29 (he may have been lying about his age to make him old enough to plausibly have a Master’s when he applied for the job). He dropped out of school at 17—the fact that he specifically says ‘dropped out’ makes me wonder if he even has a secondary school degree—to support his mom when she was going through some unspecified problems (my quiet belief that she’s a member of the Lukas family has still not been entirely Jossed).  However, a 17-year-old kid with no degree will have a hell of a time finding a job that could support both him and his mother, so Martin faked his CV to claim he had a Master’s degree in Parapsychology (I’m guessing he was hired by the Institute, then, at 17 or 18, claiming to be around 24 or 25, so he would probably be pretending to be anywhere between six to eight years older than he really is).
And it makes so much sense. Because of course Martin would tell Sims Trevor was dead even if he’d just heard a rumor to that effect, because Martin needs to feel useful, both to further the lie that he’s qualified for a position he really isn’t, and because Martin needs to help.  He basically screwed his own future over to help his mom, and his hovering care of Sims makes it clear that he wants to help his boss as well.
It also explains why he’s so prepared all the time, despite his inability to do well as a researcher (he has no actual training in the area, so the fact that he’s simply come off as incompetent and slightly stupid, rather than an obvious liar indicates that actually Martin’s managed to keep the façade up pretty well).  Martin had to take care of his mother, so practicality would have been critical.  I would imagine he’s got excellent common sense, only overridden by his desires to help or to seem at least a little competent at his job.
Jonathan Sims
Special kudos to Jonny Sims for his performance during the confrontation, which was everything I was hoping for.  The slow realization that Martin’s lies were academic in nature, that Martin’s mother-henning and concern were all genuine, that Sims has an ally and a friend in Martin Blackwood came across so clearly and so beautifully that I may have made a sort of wibbly noise in my throat. Now I want him to tell Martin everything, and get him in on the Gertrude investigation.  And I want him to relax a little.  Because here it is, the proof Sims needed that he’s not as alone as he thought.
I am reduced to a puddle of joy.
Conclusions
Yaaaay!
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!
