okay i know youngblood (song) is super popular and we love the shuffle beat and the bass line and all the other funky sounds they put in there but. can we talk about it lyrically for a second. 'i'm just a dead man walking tonight'/'i'm just a dead man crawling tonight' like. how exhausted (by this relationship, and everything i guess) you'd have to be to feel like this. the way it captures the process leading to that feeling in the verses. of this relationship, was it really ever that because it's sounding more like a concept you long for and idealise and keep coming back to to your own detriment like an addiction, dying and just being unable to accept its death. in fact the whole album is like that. and it feels like your life is ending or has ended that's how much you've attached yourself to it, when it's gone, walking around in a daze you might as well be dead yeah your body is going through the motions but you're not there. dissociated to who knows where. and then. there's another chance. crawling in desperation, dignity all gone, and you'd think you feel alive but no, you're still dead, too dead to realise this is bad for you your body is just crawling back to this person on its own accord. so much pushing and pulling away has left you so shaken there's nothing left that can see the bigger picture and decide more than one thing into the future. holding onto the hope of this failed relationship which isn't even a hope it's just an illusion, the connection you think you want but it's never going to be that. it's not capable of ever being what you need. this relationship is dead. and when you attach your whole self to it, so are you.

Okay, this may be the longest and craziest analysis I ever did, but under the cut, I will be going into heavy detail about how the complete mess mv has 5sos5 spoilers, easter eggs, whatever you wanna call them.
First I made this post before the album came out and I was focusing on the singles and a longer theory about how the album was gonna go, now I'm just gonna go crazy. I have been thinking about this since the album came out so I'm just gonna do it.
Second I just wanna point out the amount of spinning in the cinematography choices there is in the cm music video and how that alone could be something given the amount of spinning and going in circles imagery there is in the album: "we go around again", "and we're going around again in the emotional blender, "my life is just a carousel spinning around", "hope the world will spin slower", "everything I was spinnin' down the drain", so you know, spinning is something important oskaoskas.
Let's get into it then:
"Run to the east, gotta leave, I need a way out"
I have no geographical proof they were moving east (also I cut most of the clips with them walking around together cuz that was like 30 seconds of the mv sokasoikasok), but I will assume they are for the sake of being right oskaoskas, they are all moving around and they reach the giant mirror and they stop looking up, are they moving east looking for a way out? They could be.
"Take my hand, now and forever, where I stand, just as you're losing yourself again, look in the mirror"
I mean, come on, he's reaching for his reflection, I do not believe this is not on purpose.
I never added mm&i to the discussion before because it was too easy to just put any moment any of them were alone, but if I use the moment they split up and how they are shown walking alone, we have "I did not need your help, now it's just me, myself and I" and I think the way there's 2 mirrored Luke's makes even more sense.
At first, I thought about this as efyts "A darkness that holds me and loves when I bleed, need someone to show me what I couldn’t see" cuz it makes sense, buuuut I like this better thinking about it as emotions and tears. Michael is literally being dragged "fears pulling me down" and that bit also makes me think "violence in the darkness are you seeing what I’m seeing"
Ashton running in place "don’t mind me I’m just feeling kinda broken if you need me I’ll be here with my emotions" it adds up.
I do still like Calum pulling Ashton out for the "A darkness that holds me and loves when I bleed, need someone to show me what I couldn’t see" bit tho, cuz he is pulling Ashton out of the invisible force holding him, showing him another way.
I don't know why I think about this particular shot as much as I do, but it is very interesting to me that while we do see all of them jumping or on the ground, Calum is the only one we see falling.
It could be "Racehorse tripping on the dirt that you got on me" in a more symbolic way, but it could also be "I'm falling for the first time" cuz he's falling and it's the first and only fall of the video splasplapslas
"Lights will guide you, so run like hell"
I mean, they are not running, but the light is guiding them.
"Honey, I can see you when you're reaching out for more"
Ash, Mike and Calum are in the frame while Luke reaches out, COME ON.
I can also take any clip of them having fun at the end of the mv and just go "I got the best friends in this place and I'm holding on" and I like this particularly in the context of the music video because the video begins with them together but are either searching for something or they are very stiff, and in the end they are just vibing. I like that in the context of best friends and the "I see you searching for more but what we have is awesome" energy of the song.
This is what I said when blender came out but I stand by it. But we just can’t keep away when you know me like you do It’s supernatural, got me howling at the moon. Like I said in the beginning there's a lot of spinning in this video, but there's a bit that's just spinning continuously. The spinning bit is when they all get together, they can’t stay away, come on it could make sense, and if you allow me to reach a bit more, let’s focus on only Luke here for a bit. What is that behind him? That’s right, it’s the moon. These are the only shots you can see the moon in the night scenes in the mv, btw. He’s spinning toward the moon. He’s not howling, but that would’ve been weird without context oskaoskaoksoaks. Also, we talked about the colors in this video a lot and something that I can add here too is how the lighting is orange. Orange is what? Yellow and Red. Luke is yellow, Calum is red. Blender is a song that only Luke is singing that is based around the bass. *mic drop*
There also them experiencing the feeling of falling upwards cuz lets face it the name was between 5sos5 and the feeling of falling upwards and they named the ono like that as a compromise.

5sos5 track by track by me
my first listen was on the way home and before going to sleep. some thoughts i wrote down at night, some on the second and third listen. enjoy!
Complete mess: not my favorite song on the album, but the whole process of releasing it with the teasers and the changing titles made it fun, and i like the concept of having someone who kinda fits but freaking you out at the same time
easy for you to say: studio version sounds different than live (but not worse in any way), can't forget the pizza pizza mind tweet, feels kinda personal with trying to change but it's hard, gets better and better closer to the song ending
bad omens: the dark brown eyes lyric really stood out in the ono version and we freaked out a little, love the song and the melody, the instrumental in the middle is so beautiful (strings maybe?), love the part with "this i where we are"
me, myself and i: really simple lyrics being repeated over and over again like telling yourself this and trying to convince yourself, still sad that they released it after my show, feels personal because of being independent and caring for yourself but wanting someone to break through
take my hand: just such a beautiful song, the 23 lyric still hits hard cause i was 23 at my show and they played it there, this song will always make me remember the show, love “redefine what keeps you up at night” because the things that you think about can be good things and being happy can also make you stay up, this song is about friendship for me too, about having someone who is helping you through it and who you want to have next to you always, this version feels like being at joshua tree and luke is snging it to the others for the first time and you’re there in this special moment too
carousel: love the beat, it’s like a heartbeat and the metaphor of the carousel kinda makes me think of grey’s anatomy “the carousel never stops turning”, love that it’s not about love
older: such a sad song in a way, and luke’s introduction at ono made it even sadder, so sweet and beautiful with sierras voice on it
haze: still don’t understand some titles being written in capitals, love ash’s voice on this, are there some kind of trumpets or something?
you don't go to parties: there’s kinda a really specific picture in my brain for this song, like a mix of the couch from ash’s instaposts and the youngblood video couch with ash and cal singing “ashton my best friend”, love ash’s voice on this, “i should kick me out”, the five years lyric is intriguing
blender: must be really great live, stressed and depressed lyric describes me too good, not a majorly heartbroken song until the “i’d die for you” lyric hits, the end sounds as if the song is starting again which fits the round and round again theme so good
caramel: i always think there’s a phone ringing in the background, beautiful melody, love the instrumental even though i have no idea which instruments, sweet outro with the guitar, “color in all th lines now” --> there’s a parallel to some song but i can’t figure it out, love the “it used to be easy” harmonies of luke and ash, “i feel the comedown” --> parallel to luke’s comedown
best friends: love that it’s friendship, was kinda scared that it could be a love song, “calm before the storm” lyric, “i got the best friends in this place”, “i love to love you”, i love me a good friendship anthem, have a whole playlist for this theme
bleach: second song i hearted, beginning sounds so spacey, “if there’s bleach in the hallway i can start over”, brought a knife to gun fight” --> t-swift parallel !!!!!!, love the metaphor and the calm verses, kinda fits the often bleached hair of some band members
red line: Train noises in the end, the spotify storyline thingy told me the meaning with the train, still can’t figure out the aperol lyric, i think the song means like going home from the person with whom you’re no good but you keep going back
mood swings: love the swinging between the harmonies, fits the lyrics perfectly, for me it’s about feeling like you’re too messed up for someone to love you, “without you” is so beautiful, this song hurts
flatline: first song i hearted from this album (except for the singles), exciting beginning, was intrigued from the first couple of seconds, it’s so different in the best way, BANGER, couldn’t believe that the chorus is cal???, i mean how high can he sing?? for me it’s about falling in love and it’s just so much, it’s kicking you and almost killing you, it’s like “gorgeous” by t-swift, like the person’s too beautiful and you can’t take it, love the part about having changed a lot
emotions: MIKE, this song hits so hard, describes me a little too good, and it’s like not wanting to worry others but just feeling like shit, “kinda broken”, “i’ll be here with my emotions”, “i don’t wanna cry about it”, this song hurts too much, it makes me cry, “i’m doing my best and i guess that’s the best that i can do” for me is about relearning that your best sometimes is getting out of bed and howering and not being able to do more
bloodhound: completely different vibe than i thought, completely lost on the meaning, love the clapping (?) part, didn’t hear ash in the bridge at first, whichever voice you focus on in the chorus you hear the most
tears: i had such high expectations because of the “the ash girls are not ready”, wild song, you can hear ashs solo influence on it in my opinion, cals part fits perfectly, lyrics are hitting differently, was in fact not ready, “blacking out in my room”, “diamond tears” --> cut like diamonds from lukes song?

hmm okay so I’m actually gonna give some random backstory that you didn’t really ask for first cause this might make my answer make more sense. SO one of my best online friends val (@firebrand-witch) was the one who got me into soc!! first she had told my sister to read it and then I was just an innocent bystander who was making lots of comments without any real context HOWEVER I had seen a photo of wylan once with googles and I thought he was adorable and I decided he was my favorite character but I didn’t know his name yet so I just referred to him as “the one with the googles” to everyone!! then I remembered that at one point my favorite mutual had put a photo of wylan as her pfp and that MAYBE that was part of the reason I loved him? like subconsciously I associated them with each other? idk but aside from all of those reasons I’m always big on the characters that are kinda overlooked or underestimated (like I don’t mean by the fandom but by the other characters in the story) and as someone with a Complicated relationship with a lot of family members, I just really like his story line!!

I'm a big 5SOS fan, listen to their music like, every day and it's like my drug lol
Yesterday, while shopping, I found like 3 albums of theirs, and I had to get them, so I did. I now have Youngblood, Calm abd 5SOS5 woo!
The first two looked like they were already used, but I don't really mind that. What I think is weird, is that Emotions and Bloodhound aren't on the tracklist of the newest one. I mean, weren't they released as part of the album?
Idk I just think it's sad, because Bloodhound is my fav out of this one, and not seeing it on there is kinda weird, and it annoys me for some reason??? It's missing :,)
But oh well, I'm just complaining about nothing here. What matters most to me, is that i have these Albums now, physically too.

hiiii team!!! absolutely not your fault but i missed u too <3 several times i have thought hmm i wonder how team is doing it’s been too long since i tortured her with pics of luke’s tattoo and other miscellaneous topics.
so the thing about the 5sos5 tracklist, as i’m sure you’re well aware, is that the song titles are delightfully odd and fairly impossible to do much guesswork about in terms of subject matter.
i still stand by what i said about the vibe of the cake song from in the in between being fairly uptempo and happy-sounding, and i’m eyeballing a couple of these songs curiously as the possible hypothetical cake song:
caramel, because they embrace cake as a ship name, and i could see them kind of winking at that - a nod to the c-named treats without being too on the nose.
emotions, because calum was dealing with many when he started writing the song, and it also feels very cake to put a song like this in bonus track territory - keep some for themselves a little bit, you know?
best friends also feels like it has potential, but there’s also a very real chance that’s a Just the Four of Us type song, so i kinda just want to let it be, even in the realm of hypothetical fic land.
also, just because i think it would be funny, i’m not mad at the idea of it being blender. on brand for ashton to hype the song about his bros being in love.

It kinda feels like they were so frustrated about the time in between the first single and CALM being released, that that’s why they’re going about it so differently this time. ~ Rema
With a new label in play and the pandemic having changed how we consume music, it's so hard to guess what the approach is. None of their albums have really been a one to one comparison, they've all been made under such different circumstances, with 5SOS5 and YB being the most similar to me since they're really the only two albums they were able to take their time to create.
CALM is such a complex case it needs to go under a cut lmao
They weren't as open about CALM's process as they had been with previous albums so we never had a distinct timeline of its development beyond the knowledge they started recording in January 2019 and by the time they were doing WDYL promo in March, Ashton was telling people the album was finished while being open about the fact that they were currently unsigned.
Once they signed to Interscope and released Easier in May, they started answering release date questions with vague "we'll see how this single does first" teases, which I always took to imply that if Easier (or later, Teeth) had been a smash hit the way YB was, whatever incarnation of the album that was ready at that point would've been released off the strength of the single. (Whether or not that would've been the same CALM that was ultimately released in 2020 or a different incarnation, we really don't know!)
And I know it's an unpopular opinion but I think this move was a smart strategy, though it's hard to see it that way since we know how things ended up. At that point they were not only trying to build a brand but they needed to get their single success to translate to album success, which is a tough thing to do in a case like theirs, when the songs are more known than the artist.
Early on they mentioned wanting to release multiple songs before the album but the output deadzone between Teeth's August 2019 release and No Shame's February 2020 release has always led me to believe that either contractually or logistically, the WWJ tour interfered with the plan and that's how we ended up with the crush of No Shame/Old Me/CALM all being released within 6 weeks of each other. (Wildflower was in there too but I think that got fast-tracked bc the beginnings of the pandemic was obviously pulling focus from even the most dedicated fans' minds.)
Like I mentioned, 5SOS5 is very reminiscent of YB both in the length of time it's taken to make it and the apparent trial and error process (it's been said they went thru multiple sounds before landing where they did and some of the songs on the album -WWYLM and WIJ- are actually from that earlier incarnation) but what sets this new album apart is how many evolutions it's appeared to go thru. (I hope they speak to this as the release approaches!) With CALM over three years old to them at this point, I can't imagine how ready they must be to focus on new material and I imagine if 2021 had gone a bit differently (going thru 2 management teams and having to find another new label) they could've rallied and released something last year.
Looking to YB for comparison, even with the measured approach to the album, the final stage was a whirlwind, with them releasing WYB in late February but still in the mixing process in March, amidst single promo and rehearsals/departure for the 5SOS3 tour (only for the album to not release until June). And while I do still think the idea of touring both CALM and 5SOS5 together makes the most sense (notice the shift in messaging from 'No Shame Tour' to '2022 Tour'), I'm not sure how realistic it is to expect them to promote a single, an album and rehearse for a tour in just over 2 months. YB shows it can be done, but would they want to? Or do they hold it until they can devote their full attention to promo? Which... wouldn't be until late summer, between tour legs 🤔👀

why hello anon would you like some tea? a cookie? this either will be done in like 2 seconds or i will ramble for an hour so i thought a nice snack might be good. (i was right this got long i'll be putting a readmore here)
okay so idk why you thought i have coherent thoughts, i do not. ever. so let's see
well i'm gonna assume this album will be much happier? since at least publically all the guys seem to be doing well so i wouldn't exactly expect lots of sad/gritty/angsty stuff even if i personally would love that
at the same time i'm gonna assume there's gonna be some sort of acknowledgement that covid can't have been a good time for them, especially regarding the fact that they haven't been home in like 2 years. and also looking at luke's album, since it came out later than superbloom and i assume thus is even more influenced by the pandemic, there's gotta be some issues that like came up for all of them and that they might've dealt with musically.
i personally don't think it's gonna be anything like 2011 tbh but i'd be very pleased to be proven wrong. that song to me just appears like a celebration of the past especially musically and thus it doesn't exactly feel like it'd be something they chose going forward? at the same time i did just remember they worked with feldy on this so. please prove me wrong and make this pop punk gimme blink vibes please 🙏
i'm also torn on the matter of vocals. bc with calm it seemed like they were all focusing on their individual instruments and idk how to put this but jobs in the band. like luke mainly singing since he is the lead singer. then again with 2011 and also superbloom i think it would be So Cool for all of them to have their moments on 5sos5 vocally kinda like on youngblood since they are all such talented singers.
i do think and hope this will be a great album. i mean they had tons of time for themselves before they started with this, they got some rest, and they seem to all be very comfortable with where they are as a band (as far as i can judge that obviously) and as it appears they have more control over what happens (michael producing and them changing their. was it their label? they changed sth). there's obviously been a lot of time since they last put out music and they had the chance to focus on the music entirely bc no distractions like touring so. all in all i'm guessing we'll get an album that they love and from previous stuff? that probably means the fandom will love it too 🤞

Okay, so @forceofneature asked me to say more on this, and you know me, I always have more thoughts psaksokaoskas (today is the day i get canceled and thrown out of the fam sksoksoskso)
Okay, something I've been thinking about since we started getting 5sos5 songs, in this context I will count 2011 as a 5sos5 song and I will not include easy for you to say, is that they work together without sounding alike. 2011 gives you a different vibe from complete mess that gives you a different vibe from take my hand that gives you a different vibe from me myself & i that gives you a different vibe from blender. BUT, you can link them all to their past sound. Please keep in mind I'm ignoring lyrics here lol.
Like Michael says live, 2011 is their return to the pop-punk sound, and 2011 is a song that I can picture 2014 cutout t-shirts, skinny jeans, flannels and instruments hanging way too low sos playing, and the song has this simple 4 chords structure (it's actually 3 but you're playing G twice and that's a different conversation) that builds and builds, until you get to the outro where they slow down and them come back with full force, and I think that's a really 5sos way of structuring a song and like you can group that with slsp, castaway like they are doing live, but if you ignore the genre and focus on the way the sound is being delivered to us you can put that song with like good girls, kiss me kiss me, 18, tomorrow never dies, greenlight, over and out, permanent vacation, fly away, safety pin, catch 22, want you back, moving along, if wall could talk, babylon, more, no shame, easier, and sure some make more sense together than others, like 5sos please put over and out in the 15 minutes of pop punk please, but want you back came on after 2011 and I was like 🤔🤔🤔🤔 (Spotify playlist with the songs cuz I'm extra)
Complete Mess is the wildcard in the new songs for me, but when you think about the structure, again, it makes sense cuz you have a song that's more chill, one of them singing one verse, someone else singing the other one, a bridge that someone else is singing that actually repeats another bit of the song and drop going back to the chorus with all of them, the first song that comes to mind is close as strangers, but like, beside you, catch fire, san francisco, story of another us, why wont you love me, heartache on the big screen, wherever you are, gotta get out, the only reason, broken pieces. Luke is the only one singing in calm but i kinda wanna say lonely heart too. (playlist)
Take my hand its a song that builds, builds, builds and dropkicks you in the face when it drops you at brigdeland. My first thought is never be, but like, everything i didn't say, long way home, jet black heart, the girl who cried wolf, (this one even more with the joshua tree version, sorry it got leaked kings) broken home. Its hard for me to group it with newer songs aka yb and calm, but like i kinda wanna say ghost of you and not in the same way. (Playlist)
Me myself & I. Fascinating song really, read this for more cuz @kindahoping4forever explained the way this song is structured really well. I know A LOT of people got confused as to why Ashton said this song was sgfg, but like, this song is very sgfg meets traditional pop. Its 4 chords, a simple strumming, a cool beat, it makes me think vapor, airplanes, waste the night, catch 22 again, better man, disconnected, old me. (playlist)
For me blender is the easiest to place around other songs, for many different reason, but probably because this is the 5sos side i gravitate towards regularly. Gotta love 5sos ability to build a song around the bass. If your first thought after listening to this song wasn't talk fast i don't trust you /j soskapsksoak but come on, it's talk fast big sister for sure, it also gives not in the same way, kill my time, english love affair, thin white lies, hey everybody (sorry to everyone that hates this song but the bass on it alone makes it worth it ksoajsosksoak), valentine, moving along, girls talk boys, teeth. Honestly, I am HYPED for 5sos5 cuz it's been a ride and it does look like it's gonna be sounding really 5sos if you know what I mean.

I still can’t believe they went with 5SOS5. Like I don’t hate it. It’s just disappointing. Even though CALM is self titled as well it is a beatiful title imo. 5SOS5 sounds like not a real title.
Okay, now that things have settled in my brain a bit, I think we set ourselves up for disappointment with the analysis and symbolisms here. And look I don't hate 5sos5, I made this last year when we got that little video of them back in the studio.
And I also made this one after the Zack Sang interview.
But like since them with complete mess and all the talk about the creative process and all that we kinda ended up expecting too much. It's the expected name. It's their 5th album. You don't really get that chance many times as artist. They rebranded to go by 5 seconds of summer after a long time with a logo that said just 5sos. 5sos is who they are and they were probably discussing this for way longer than any of can imagine to a point where they felt like it was the right call. Michael did said he wished they hadn't self titled yet to self title this one.
I get the disappointment cuz I too wanted something more. What? I don't know. I'd love to see some of the other names they were considering. But like it's okay.
