favorite callbacks/foreshadowing payoff in A Power Unbound that made yell "oh goddammit" at my book
Tumblr media
MY MOST SATISFYING "OH GODDAMMIT" MOMENT. FULL ON HAD ME PACING UP AND DOWN MY APARTMENT GOING "OH MY GOD THEY ACTUALLY DID IT, THE CRAZY SON OF A BITCH, THEY DID IT"
it wins #1 because this line always made me SO suspicious, but I also thought it was such a longshot. between the suspiciously specific phrasing of "blow up" and alan calling the lockroom easy to misuse in the same scene, my prediction was actually that the bad guys were going to do some fuckshit with the lockroom, because ART introduced us to the concept of "using hair to channel magic" and having a room full of everybody's hair seemed... uh, bad.
so I was just wrong enough to be delightfully shocked and just right enough to feel so satisfyingly smug. 10/10 felt terrific.
Tumblr media
"adelaide tapping her ring" is SUCH a sneaky little detail. because she's tapping her ring all throughout a marvelleous light, and then sURPRISE it was the contract piece all along, beautiful bit of same-book foreshadowing, well done everyone go home
so when it showed up again in a power unbound, I was like "aw cute. I like that she's still got that little habit, even though it's not a Plot Relevant Foreshadowing Moment anymore, what a nice detail"
and then adelaide pseudo-flipped me off with her ring finger and went SURPRISE, GOT YOU TWICE, WHAT WAS THAT ABOUT MY PLOT RELEVANT RING?
Tumblr media
this one didn't take me by surprise, but it's exactly what I love about reading a careful and deliberate writer.
this is in the same scene where we find out about jack's secretbind. so when I read it, I thought "okay well, we just found out he has A Mouth Thing. but he subconsciously touches his leg as well as his mouth, so probably he has A Leg Thing too." and then did a quick "probably from the war, right? seems most likely" and felt confident I knew that Jack had some kind of leg injury long before A Power Unbound even came out
and it's just SO FUN, because when you have a really good writer like this, you get the absolute joy as a reader of reading One Single Sentence and going "I see you, I know that means something." it's delightful, it's my favorite kind of puzzle, it's so rewarding
Tumblr media
the way robin gets super uncomfortable with the penhallick crowd gossiping about what happened to jack and then changes the subject to magical people born into unmagical families who never discover their magic
the way jack and alan are linked together through this one worldbuilding-during-dinner conversation from two books ago. beautiful. profound.
and finally. my grand final of moments that made me go OH!! FUCK!!—
Tumblr media
that's the first mention of jack by name, ever, at all, in the entire series.
that is the very first detail we ever learn about him.
AND THEN HE DID IT AGAIN, AFTER ALL THOSE YEARS OF NO MAGIC, AND I WAS SO PROUD, AND I LOVE HIM SO MUCH, AND ALSO I HUCKED MY BOOK ACROSS MY BED.
HIS FIRST MENTION AND HIS FIRST ACT OF MAGIC AFTER OVER A DECADE, crying, crying forever, we have come full circle

thinking about edwin courcey who grew up convinced that he was worthless, believing that there must be something wrong with him, for him to be such a target. who grew up angry and prickly and unpleasant because of it and who can’t comprehend for so long that he’s someone who people can like and miss and want to be around. who’s first instinct was always to hide away or snap because for too long any teasing meant real pain, real intent, real hatred. thinking about edwin courcey who’s learning that he’s worth something and that not every tease has to be met with claws and that people do want him around for who he really is, even if it’s still hard and people still make it unbelievable sometimes (I’m talking about myself)

Thoughts on A Power Unbound, in no particular order and with an effort made to avoid major spoilers:
-Why does anyone in this story bother with magic when both of the Blyths are there to do actual violence?
-I have to reread A Marvelous Light because I'd forgotten how much I love Adelaide
-Extremely uneven power dynamics are toxic and destructive but can also be fun and kinky
-Every protagonist in this trilogy says 'be gay do crimes'
-Edwin Courcey my beloved overachiever
-Alan Ross is awarded Brother of the Century award (Walter Courcey is awarded whatever the opposite of that is)
-Lady Cheetham and Lady Dufay are both magnificent and I assume they live happily ever after together doing magnificent magical Lady things
-"Alan, we're in a house so full of inverts that Wilde could write a play about it"
-"It's alarming that forgery is your first instinct, but I admire it."

When the misunderstanding is mutual but they’re both so sweet about it (coffee shop au edition)

thank you for bringing this GALAXY brain take to my attention 😂 this guy comes in, all cagey about his past and his scars, always wearing baggy clothes but complaining about compression clothes (being on the run does a number on your joints and muscles), picking out a name for himself??? OBVIOUSLY he’s trans right
They somehow manage to have like three separate conversations about it without realizing they’re talking about two very different scenarios. Andrew only was so wrong for so long because scars on their own (and even being a criminal lbr) are such non-issues that it didn’t even occur to him that Neil could be talking about anything less important than being trans lol
Andrew had his little crisis about it and landed pretty solid on yeah he’s still into Neil regardless, and yeah he’s still super gay. He’ll figure out the rest from there. The only thing he didn't prepare for was Neil being uh. Cis

Idk just thought I'd drop this ramble here, can't help but thinking of jean nervously asking Jeremy to shave the back of his head for him bc he cant see and the patches of hair he was missing bothered gim, but Jeremy does it all for him, and he's so gentle , and jean feels safe, and he is beginning to know what friends are.

I hate Riko as much as any aftg fan, and none of what I'm about to say changes that, but how much more difficult would he have been to hate if we knew what his childhood was like? we make fun of Neil's rant at the winter banquet because he verbally destroyed Riko, but do you ever stop and wonder how much of it rang true? Neil doesn't just insult people, he picks them apart because he can see exactly where the fractures are. 'always a commodity, never a human being'? that shit must have hurt so badly because it's true, isn't it? Riko is praised, has been since he was a child, but not for who he is. the love he's always received, the admiration and the fame, it's all conditional. and I'm sure that despite being the Raven King, the Nest wasn't easy on him either. we just didn't see that because Neil is an unreliable narrator. does that excuse what he did? the torture, and asking others to rape Jean, and breaking Kevin's hands? no, it doesn't. but it does make me wonder if he, too, was broken as a child. was he always this psychopathic or was it caused by trauma? was there once a child begging for someone to save him where Riko now stands?

andrew mocks and berates neil for his abysmal sense of self-preservation as if he hadn't decided he could take on an entire mafia all by himself despite being five feet tall and all of twenty years old, and I find it hilarious
