So, this is going to be the first of my OOAK experiment. I have never done this before and I’ve never thought about it before now. I wavered throughout my life on my opinion of bjds (ball jointed dolls). Some pictures make them appealing as heck, some price tags make them ridiculous as heck, and sometimes my irrational fear of the Uncanny Valley can take the better of me. Regardless, I know a lot of things attribute to my current journey into OOAK (One Of A Kind).

Working at a toy company, I was tasked with overseeing a project which had close resemblance to a bjd. Of course I had to do some research in order to do my job efficiently. My research got me back into the allure of bjds, but as usual, the price was always a turnoff for someone of a tight budget.

I mentioned it to a friend of mine who shared the same feeling I did and we were stuck in that limbo for a while. It was just then that a YouTube channel that I’m subscribed to made a post. Couple years back I subscribed to Nicolle’s Dreams because I was texturing a 3d modeled head for a friend of mine and wanted to achieve that doll look. Since then, I paid little attention to the channel till now. She did repaints of Monster High dolls and made them look like bjds. I showed my friend who then directed me to Dollightful.

After some brief obsessing, I decided I was going to try. I plan to post my endeavors to help keep me motivated.

The first step in my process after obsessively watching any video I could on the topic was to locate some dolls. It was much simpler than I had anticipated since the friend who got hyped with me about it was quick to scan for prospects. Buying new was too much of an investment for an experiment so secondhand shop was our scope of search. It proved more daunting that we both expected since most second hand dolls were undesireably damaged. I ended up bidding on two lots from the same seller. What made the lot so appealing to me was the amount of pink dracula dolls were in the lot. In all of the bjd videos I watched, OOAKS made from her looked the most natural to human skin pigment. (This excludes cleo de nile who sometimes had body wrapping and clawdeen who I think sometimes had fur tufts on her body.)

I was excited when the package arrived. I couldn’t wait to start. Though, I had come to the realization that if I wanted to make my own custom clothes for them, I should have tried for a lot with clothes to begin with so I could reverse engineer their measurements without needing to think super had about drafting. All of my dolls were naked. Tried to bid for a second lot with clothes but was outbid. So I settled with what I got.

I got 18 dolls in total, one of which is missing an arm so she might just be a dress form. My turnout was less than 3 dollars a doll so I’m pretty pleased with that.

From there I obtained Mr.SuperClear as recommended by every OOAK out there and some colorè brand watercolor pencils. My hope is that I’m not copping myself by picking a cheaper brand but we shall see. As a previous art student, I had a stash of nu pastels that I figured could do the trick. I know nu pastels are technically hard pastels and not soft pastels but that’s why this is an experiment.

The only thing I was missing was cotton gloves.

I didn’t want to start without the gloves but was too excited to NOT touch the dolls that I immediately gave them a warm soapy bath, dried them, then gave them a wipe down with disinfectant since I wasn’t aware of their background as second hand dolls. Mind you, I then pondered if I was being too much of a germaphobe. I don’t know about now a days, but back in my day, kids put these things in their mouths!!!

I took one look at this canvas challenge and thought of two things. One being the painter that I adore so much and well, Sans. So I figured why not. I wanted to do a much cleaner job but my computer was recently updated to Windows 10 and it is giving me issues with my lines and lag. It didn’t have any issues before on my window 7. But basically, I didn’t have pressure sensitivity so couldn’t produce clean lineart. However, I didn’t feel like this should hinder me from doing the challenge to begin with. So I figured after watching a co-worker do some color work, I should work on my color blocking anyway and not rely so heavily on my lines for a change.

Hello once again! Beko here straight out of work. Currently waiting for my class to start and thought it would be nice to give an update on today’s progress.

I started off the day wanting to come into the office early to try and see if I could get a jump start on sorting the packing labels but being the scrub that I am, I accidentally punched in my security code wrong and set off the alarm. Not a great start to the day but I was still able to kick out those labels before anyone else came into the office. So, maybe good job? >w<;;

I wish I could give you guys an estimate of how much we did today but we did so much today that I don’t even know! Today’s pile was HUGE! To give you an idea, it was taller than ME! USPS had to send a backup truck since we filled an empty one up again but with only HALF the pile. OwO;

Still very much excited for everyone to get their birdies. As a reminder to everyone who has already received their birds and may have any sort of issues to make sure and send an email over to [email protected] so that we can take care of any matters that may arise.

(And while I can’t give anything away. I do want to say that some interesting conversations did occur today about future projects. That’s a hint to keep tabs on ESC-TOYS.)

Hey guys!

Beko here for another update.

Would you guys believe that the post truck was completely empty prior to arriving at the office? ^w^

Another 500 birdies went out today so we really are plowing through all the boxes. It took me longer than expected to validate and organize the shipping labels to backers requests.

This brings me to my next topic that I’d like to go over which are some inquiries about the postage speed. So once these little birdies leave our warehouse, the process is completely out of our hands. The biggest things that will hold them up are Customs and VAT(Value-Added Tax). I was informed that if a birdie is put under VAT, a notice will be sent out to the recipient to pay the VAT. The birdie will be put on hold until the VAT is cleared by the recipient. Putting aside customs and VAT, the quoted time estimate for Japan is roughly 2 to 3 weeks whereas delivery to UK would be shorter than that. Keeping in mind that this is if there aren’t any hiccups experienced along the way.

I hope that answered any questions backers might have had about post times. I’d like to keep everyone up to date as much as I can.

So I needed to double check if it was OK for me to post this stuff but as many of you may know, we have started with fulfillment on the Hatoful Boyfriend Kickstarter! Everything is moving full swing at the office and we’ve been doing the expected running about printing all the labels in the world to send these little guys. It’s really exciting to see these little birdies finally fly home. I know everyone has been freaking out about when theirs will come. It is a process. For whatever reason, they keep sending us the tiny USPS neighborhood truck to do our pick ups and we CRAM as much as we can in them.

So for everyone who are still waiting, worry not! We literally are trying our best to ship them out as fast as our little wings can go.

HOWEVER, today we were able to pack OVER 600 birdies for shipment that our postman had to come back to us with a LARGER empty truck. We ran through all our resources and actually even ran out of shipping bags. Once we get more in tomorrow, expect another big haul of birds to go out Wednesday or Thursday!

If anyone experiences any issues with their birdie package, please make sure to address them directly to [email protected] so that we are able to handle each issue accordingly.

So an update to what’s been going on, I haven’t really been active at all lately but I’ve had a pretty hectic schedule this quarter balancing between work, school, portfolio prep, and internship all in one go.

The very internship being at ESC TOY which is well known for their involvement producing merchandise for multiple widely popular game titles. That being said and after completing more than the required 99 hours of internship, they were happy enough to want me to be a part of their company as Jr. Brand Manager. This is an amazing event for me and I’m looking forward to going with them. Keep on the lookout for new activity from them because things are looking to be quite busy soon.

After this quarter I will have more time on my hands and I’m aware that there are some asks that need some attending to. I plan to get to them soon enough.

Creating a new logo. With the help of @meloettesketches

We had talked about different designs to make it stand out but I couldn't shy away from my color palette. I also had button designs in mind because I think it would be super cute to get this in sticker or button form. But I couldn’t decide whether I liked with or without the lines. I’ll use both, I just thought without looked cool too.

Still have a lot to figure out with this program and may still default to PS due to familiarity but I did like some features that MS had but I wasnt accustomed to using it.

Project for concept club. Had to pick a theme and create something based on that. I picked ALL the themes and this is what popped out of the head.

Been going through a rough slum the past two days and finally coming out of it and I think it’s partly because of this. Seeing this come together has given me more confidence in my ability to perform the work that I want to do so hope I can move forward from here.

Uh, if I have to explain the concept, the Victorian is obviously the dress style. The apocalypse was ideally going to be the surroundings of broken buildings and or zombies. So you could say she is a fantasy zombie killer of sorts. Sports is the armor piece she is wearing based on football chest padding. Stylize yourself, well, its me. Or rather, I gave her pigtails since I usually like to wear them and the blue stockings are reference to my Minecraft skin. Nature are the flowers that I put into her hair. and valentine is the archery arm guards that I gave her much like cupid flails about with his bow and arrows.

Oh and a tidbit, the graphic is made from the letters of my nickname. So it’s a fancy pancy mirrored version of BEKO.
